Starting point is 00:00:00 Bill O'Reilly here. You are listening to the weekend edition of the O'Reilly update. Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater. Thanks, Bill. Here's what's happening this week in America. GDP is up. Jerry Springer passed away. No bail for the leaker, and a 16-year-old got into college.
Starting point is 00:00:21 A lot. A lot of colleges. That's all coming up, and then your message of the day. But first, the GDP has increased in the first quarter of this year by 1.1%. The economy's so weird now that good news is bad news and bad news is good news. The Federal Reserve wants to slow the economy down to keep inflation down. That's why they've been raising rates.
Starting point is 00:00:43 So normally a 1.1% GDP increase is terrible, but from the Fed's perspective, it's good. But people kept spending money, an annual increase of 3.7%. But is that spending increased just because of inflation? And is that spending increasing people's debt? The New York Times says that this is a strong economy Or is it just hanging on before a collapse? Jerry Springer has passed away at the age of 79. The host of the Jerry Springer show for 27 years.
Starting point is 00:01:12 He was elected to Cincinnati, Ohio's city council and then resigned because he paid for a prostitute. This was 1974. But then in 1975, he ran for his seat back and won. And then the council in 1977 named him the mayor. Then he went on to TV news and then to host his own TV show. which started out as a serious show. His episodes would be about how to solve crime,
Starting point is 00:01:34 and he'd talk about homelessness and Second Amendment issues. That was 1991, and then ratings went down. And in 1994, he went with, I married a horse, and I'm an adult baby. Then people started throwing chairs, and ratings went up. At the height of his success, he went on Dave Letterman's show, and he was asked, what effect does your show have on the world today? And he said, no, nothing. My show is plain stupid.
Starting point is 00:01:59 Remember the leaked Pentagon documents a couple weeks ago. A Massachusetts Air National Guardsman Jack Tashara is accused of accessing hundreds of highly classified intelligence documents for over a year before he was arrested. Prosecutors say he's a flight risk and should not be let out on bail. They say he has an arsenal of weapons and recently has used government computers to search the terms Ruby Ridge, Las Vegas shooting, Mandalay Bay shooting, Buffalo Top Shooting, and Uvalde. So they say he shouldn't be let out of jail. He's facing 25 years in prison. A senior at a Louisiana high school has been accepted to college. 170 of them.
Starting point is 00:02:38 He's been offered $9 million in scholarships. The record is $9.4 million. He says he wants to get to $10 million. He's only 16. He has a 4.98 GPA and is fluent in Spanish. His advice, I'm a God-fearing young man. I keep God first. If you keep God in the mix,
Starting point is 00:02:55 then you're definitely going to be successful no matter what you do. Bill O'Reilly with your message of the day. Next. Power, politics and the people behind the headlines. I'm Miranda Devine, New York Post columnist and the host of the brand new podcast, Podforce One. Every week I'll sit down for candid conversations with Washington's most powerful disruptors, lawmakers, newsmakers, and even the president of the United States. Starting point is 00:03:41 You don't want to miss an episode. Time now for the O'Reilly Update, Message of the Day. Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, made his first appearance on the no-spin news last week. And I asked him about the border situation, which gets more dead. dangerous by the day. The question was simple. Why is President Biden not enforcing immigration law and allowing what is now 6.6 million migrants into the United States? The speaker said he did not have an answer to that question. And I believe he really does not know why Biden has destroyed the southern border. We can all speculate, but that's useless. The far left certainly wants
Starting point is 00:04:26 open borders and does not care about the flood of narcotics that engenders. President Biden is an absolute prisoner of far-left ideology on every issue, including unfettered abortion for which he will have to answer if there is a judgment day. To me, Joe Biden is impaired and absolutely incapable of running this country. Of course, I could be wrong about the impairment, but vast evidence is on my side. To those Americans who still support the president, I say that you are partially responsible for hundreds of thousands of drug deaths and the immense suffering of millions of migrants lured to the U.S. open border. That might be a harsh judgment, but it's true. If Biden did not have a modicum of support, he could not destroy the border. I'm Bill O'Reilly. I approve the message by

Listen and subscribe on Amazon Music, Apple Podcast, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Now the O'Reilly Update brings you something you might, right? Not no. 162 years ago, President Abraham Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus. For the first time in history, American soldiers could arrest and detain U.S. citizens without due
Starting point is 00:08:33 process. Here is the story. The concept of habeas corpus states back to the 12th century. In Latin, it means, show me the body. The law demands any person charged with a crime must appear before a court within a reasonable period of time. Article 1, Section 9 of the Constitution states, quote, the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended unless in cases of rebellion. Well, the Civil War was certainly a rebellion, and two weeks after it started, many in Washington feared other states would leave the Union. So on April 27, 1861, President Lincoln suspended the doctrine. Under his order, Union soldiers could detain individuals considered a threat to the military or to civilians. Those arrested were held without indictment
Starting point is 00:09:34 or arraignment. The decision was immediately challenged. The Supreme Court ruled a commander-in-chief did not have the authority to hold Americans indefinitely even rebels. Lincoln, however, remained defiant. In a speech to Congress on July 4th, Abe said, quote, it is my duty to suspend the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus, or, in other words, to arrest and detain without resort to the ordinary processes and forms of law, unquote. Now, constitutional scholars debate the issue to this day. Even Lincoln himself was unsure about the legality of his action. and here's something else you might not know.
Starting point is 00:10:22 Abraham Lincoln was not the only president to suspend habeas corpus. Other examples include Ulysses Grant and is cracked down on the Ku Klux Klan. Franklin Roosevelt's forced internment of Japanese Americans during the Second World War and George W. Bush's detention of al-Qaeda suspects after the September 11th attempt. tax in Guantanamo Bay.
