Starting point is 00:00:00 Bill O'Reilly here. You are listening to the weekend edition of the O'Reilly update. Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater. Thank you, Bill. Here's what's happening this week in America. Donald Trump surrenders in Georgia. House Republicans investigate the Atlanta District Attorney. Young Americans prefer pets to children
Starting point is 00:00:22 and a record number of Americans plan on traveling this Labor Day. That's all coming up. And then I will be here with your message of the day. but first Donald Trump taken into custody in Atlanta last night, the former president charged along with 18 co-defendants for allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 election results. If I may, sidebar here. Of all the groups of indictments,
Starting point is 00:00:47 I think this one's the most ridiculous, but also the one that's most likely to actually have him end up in jail because it's the easiest to find someone guilty of, RICO charges. And there's no pardon. The president and the governor can't pardon. There's like a five-person panel in Georgia that issues the pardons. The DA there filing paperwork to start the trial no later than it's October. In total, Trump has been charged with 91 federal and state charges in four separate cases.
Starting point is 00:01:17 And if convicted, he faces a maximum prison sentence of 717 years. Also the death penalty. They're not talking about that, but one of the charges in D.C., Conspiracy against rights, if someone dies in the commission of that crime, then they're eligible for the death penalty. The House Judiciary Committee is probing Fulton County District Attorney Fannie Willis regarding her motivations for prosecuting Donald Trump. Jim Jordan said in a letter, quote, it is noteworthy that just four days before the indictment you launched a new campaign fundraising website that highlighted your investigation into President Trump. Additionally, the four woman on the special grand jury bragged about her excitement at the prospect of getting to swear him in. That woman, she was Sutton Special.
Starting point is 00:02:01 She was so giddy about it. Ooh, I thought that would be so cool. A survey from Consumer Affairs finds 50% of young folks would rather have pets than their own children. Two-thirds refused to take part in daily activities without their pets. Millennials spend more on the family pet than any other generation. On average, young owners burn $250 a month on pets, on cats and dogs. That's $3,000 a year on toys and toys. Treats. Labor Day travel. Up 44% compared to last year. A survey from AAA finds a record number
Starting point is 00:02:35 of Americans will hit the road for the holiday weekend. On average, the typical family spends eight hours in the car. The top road trips for 2023, Key West Florida, the Grand Canyon, Orchard Beach, Maine, Montauk, Long Island, and the number one destination this September, Yosemite National Park. Message of the day. Next. power, politics and the people behind the headlines. I'm Miranda Devine, New York Post columnist and the host of the brand new podcast, Podforce One. Hey, I'm Mike Slater, filling in for Bill O'Reilly. Now it's time for the O'Reilly Update message of the day. David Brooks recently asked the question, why are Americans so sad and why are Americans so mean? Rates of depression and deaths of despair at all-time highs. People who say they have no close friends. the number of people 25 to 54 who are unmarried. More than half of all Americans say that no one knows them well. 44% of high schoolers, high schoolers, report persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness.
Starting point is 00:04:13 And then when it comes to people being mean or rude, nurses are quitting their jobs because patients have become so abusive. Teachers can't take teaching anymore because students have become violent towards them. Also, Americans are less generous. In 2000, two-thirds of Americans gave to charity today, it's less than half. So what's going on? A couple potential reasons. First, we're obsessed with technology.
Starting point is 00:04:37 We all know that. It's changed our brains, changed how we interact with people, how we see the world. Also, we're more isolated than ever before. Less connected to our neighbors and community than we've ever been. Another reason we're more diverse than ever before. And we're told that diversity is our strength, but no one ever says why exactly. Japan doesn't think so. China, Denmark, Kenya,
Starting point is 00:04:57 they don't think diversity is their strength. Diversity's fine if you all believe the same things about what a society should look like. But David Brooks says the best answer as to why we're more sad and rude than ever before is because we no longer train people in moral formation. The biggest dividing line between progressives and conservatives is this. Progressives believe that people are born good,
Starting point is 00:05:23 and conservatives believed that people are born sinful. We became the greatest country in the world because our founding fathers knew that we were born sinful and therefore needed to work very hard and purposefully at becoming virtuous. Ben Franklin wrote to a friend in 1782. He said, men, I find to be a sort of beings very badly constructed. They are generally more easily provoked than reconciled,
Starting point is 00:05:50 more disposed of to do mischief to each other than to make reparation and more easily deceived than undeceived. So our founders were obsessed with moral formation. Noah Webster said the virtues of men are of more consequence of society than their abilities. And for this reason, the heart should be cultivated with more focus than the head. All the way up till the 50s in 1951, the National Education Association said that the unremitting concern for moral and spiritual values continues to be the top priority for education. It's not true today.
Starting point is 00:06:22 You know, today the top priority is racial equity and transgender kids and all this nonsense. So we stopped focusing on moral formation. And what has resulted? Well, we have no longer agreed upon shared universal truths. No objective right and wrong can be agreed upon. It's not about right and wrong. It's about personal taste and who are you to say what's right? And oh, don't judge me.
Starting point is 00:06:45 Morality today is whatever feels good to me in the moment. Whatever feels good to me in the moment. the result, of course, is going to be kids who feel lost, confused, and angry, and hopeless, and selfish, and therefore sad and mean. Hurt people, hurt people. This is all very depressing, but the good news is we know how to turn this around. We need to all recognize that we are sinners who need to focus on moral formation and building the virtues back up.
Starting point is 00:07:22 And we don't need to reinvent the wheel. It's been done before. We know the virtues that made America the greatest country in the world. We just have to get back to doing it again. I'm Mike Slater, Biller for Bill O'Reilly. Something you might not know. Next. Hey, it's Sean Spicer from the Sean Spicer Show podcast.

Now it's time for something you might not know. 850 people are still missing in Maui because of the white.
Starting point is 00:08:20 wildfire, 850. How can that be? Before we get to that, Biden went out to Maui, and I don't know how it could have been a worse visit. He went in front of a big group of people, and he did the whole I feel your pain routine. So he said, not to compare tragedies, but should have stopped there. And then he goes on to tell a story about how one time at his lakehouse, there was a small kitchen fire, and he almost lost his corvette. Wow. he really knows what it's like to lose your entire livelihood but it's very on brand Biden does not have a thing that we humans call compassion passion means to suffer come means with so to come compassion means to suffer alongside someone
Starting point is 00:09:09 Biden has never been good at this there was a gold star mom who recently told her story her son died in the Afghanistan withdrawal and she met Joe Biden in the Oval Office for an event for Gold Star families. She said, Joe Biden came up to her and said, I can understand if you're angry. She started to weep and said, it should never have happened this way. And she says, he stood there stoically, nothing out of his mouth except, well, would you like to get a photo with me? She said, I'll only take a photo with you if you're standing next to my son's tombstone
Starting point is 00:09:44 at Arlington National Cemetery. And she says Biden answered, I can't do that because the Secret Service won't let me. I feel like a president could do that if he wanted to. Back to Maui for Joe, it also looks like he fell asleep while at another event. Here's the deal with Maui. 850 people are labeled still missing. It's been two weeks, and we're still saying they're missing? Why are they not saying the obvious?
Starting point is 00:10:09 Why are they delaying this? And when someone asked the mayor of Maui, to his face, how many children are missing, he refused to answer. Why? What are they waiting for? I mean that genuinely. What are they waiting for? It's getting to the point where you have to start asking, what are they trying to hide?
Starting point is 00:10:30 An illegal immigrant family gets separated at the border and it's all over every magazine cover and newspaper in the country. But we don't know how many children died in a wildfire in our country. And the government and the media is not telling us the truth. What's going on there? Why are they waiting?
