Bill O'Reilly here. You are listening to the O'Reilly Update. Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater.
Thank you, Bill. It is Tuesday, August 26th, 2025. Here's what's happening today in America.
Donald Trump establishes a special unit in the National Guard. Cracker barrel backs off sort of their woke rebrand.
Belief in a higher power falls to a record low, and most young Americans think that college,
a massive waste of money. And then I will be here with your message of the day about the
19 states that are deploying their own National Guard to crack down on crime and illegal
immigration. But first, the president signed an executive order establishing a new unit
within the National Guard. The troops will be tasked with fighting crime and establishing
order in our cities. Supporters say the move is necessary to combat lawlessness in places
like Chicago, Los Angeles, Baltimore, and New York. Critics claim the order is a violence
of state's rights to enforce local laws.
Again, more on this in our message of the day coming up.
National Flu Chain Cracker Barrel admitted that their recent efforts to modernize the
company's image has failed with customers.
The old-timey themed restaurant wrote the following statement, quote,
we could have done a better job sharing who we are and who we always will be.
Or you could have just changed nothing at all.
We will do a message of the day about Cracker Barrel and what this represents.
And who are these people that would take over a beloved brand like this and destroy it?
We'll cover it sometime this week.
A survey from Gallup finds that 80% of the public believes in a higher power.
It's down from 98% back in 1969.
Younger liberal Americans are the least likely to profess faith in God.
32% of people under the age of 29 identify as agnostic or atheist.
The most religious group in the country, conservative baby boomers,
94% of them say religion plays a major role in their day-to-day lives.
A survey by TD Bank finds that half of young Americans consider college unnecessary.
Millions of teenagers across America are now considering alternatives to a standard four-year degree.
The biggest factor for the decline in higher learning?
The cost.
The typical student graduates from college with $30,000 in loans.
I've heard way more than that.
There's some schools now that are $90,000.
a year.
75% of Americans under the age of 30 want the federal government to cancel student debt.
Well, of course they do.
First they do.
But what really needs to happen, because I do have sympathy for the kids who are hoodwinked
into taking these massive loans, what really needs to happen is the universities need to pay
the debt.
They're the ones who benefited the most up front and burdened their own students with
this debt.
Coming up, the message of the day about the National Guard, and then something you might
not know about the burning of the American flag.
Let's face it, the U.S. economy is underststststruct.

Mike Slater, filling for Bill O'Reilly.
Now it's time for the O'Reilly update.
Message of the day.
1,700 National Guard troops are being mobilized across 19 red states.
Now, the left is claiming that this is Trump's military takeover of America and Trump's
police state is not.
This is the Republican governors of these 19 states, calling their own National Guard.
Now, it certainly echoes what Trump has done in D.C. to crack down on crime.
But this is all done to assist local and federal law enforcement in deporting illegal aliens and cracking down on crime.
To make our city safe, all done legally under the control of the state governors.
Now, Wes Moore, he's the governor of Maryland.
He was asked why he's against deploying the National Guard in his state to help the people of Baltimore.
And his first response was the cost. It's too expensive. A million dollars a day. I don't know where that number came from, but let's just go with it. Here's my response. What's the cost of not stopping crime? How much is it costing the people of your state to live in these disgusting, filthy, crime-ridden cesspools every day? What's the cost of people getting murdered? What's the cost of people living in fear?
What's the cost of a kid not riding a bicycle because it keeps getting stolen?
What's the cost of a kid not being able to walk to school because they have to walk through
too many gang-infested corners or sleeping in fear because a bullet might go through your wall
and kill you in a drive-by shooting?
What's the cost already of doing nothing?
Pretty sure if you calculated that, it would make a million dollars a day seem pretty measly.
But then the governor of Maryland went on to say that it's deeply disdively.
disrespectful to the members of the National Guard.
He said, quote, as someone who actually deployed overseas and served my country in combat
to ask these men and women to do a job that they're not trained for is just deeply disrespectful.
Now, worth noting that West Moore has some stolen valor issues.
In 2006, he said he earned the Bronze Star.
He did not.
Honest mistake, he said.
And listen, who hasn't said that they've earned a Bronze Star when they didn't?
Simple honest mistake, right?
But putting that honest mistake aside, he's wrong.
He said the National Guard doesn't train?
They're not trained for this?
On my radio show, we opened up the phone to National Guardsmen to call in
and say if that's true or not.
And every single guardsman who called in said we are 100% absolutely entirely trained
to go and serve with local and federal law enforcement in a support role.
That's the job.
We had guardsmen call in saying they've been deployed.
during disasters, where they would have police who normally would have two police in a
patrol car, but now it's one police officer and a guardsman. So the guard is there to help
and support the local police, a force multiplier. This is what they do. And they're absolutely
ready to do it. And I asked these guardsmen who called in, I said, if your governor told you
to go and protect the people of the city nearest you, what would you say? And every single one
of them said, let's go. I'd love to. It would be an honor. So the governor of Maryland said
it's disrespectful to ask the National Guard to do this, when in reality, it would be an honor.
In fact, it's why they joined the Guard in the first place to guard the nation.
From illegal alien invaders, in other words, enemies domestic, and from criminals who are
terrorizing their communities.
Governor Moore saying that the Guard, they're not capable, they're not trained, they're
not good enough to handle this.
You may remember Tim Walls, Governor of Minnesota, said during the George Floyd riots
that the National Guard is just a bunch of 19-year-old cooks.
Democrats have been
disrespect to the National Guard
for a long time.
Just know the real reason
why these Democrats
don't want to deploy the Guard
to keep their city safe.
As one Guard's been told me,
because mission, success
from the National Guard
would lead to these governors
own demise.

Mike Slater, filling it for Bill O'Reilly.
Now it's time for something you might not know.
We talked in the morning edition about this flag burning executive order.
that the president signed.
He said, among other things,
that his administration will prosecute
anyone who incites violence
or otherwise violates our laws
while desecrating this symbol of our country.
I want to push back here
on this automatic libertarian response
that has become the go-to conservative response
for a lot of people.
And that is burning the flag,
as much as I hate it,
is someone's First Amendment right.
Where did that come from?
1984, there was a communist.
He was a member of the revolutionary
communist youth brigade. He burned the American flag outside of the 1984 Republican Convention in
Dallas. He stole it and then burned it. He was fined $2,000 and a year in jail based on Texas law.
And it worked his way up to the Supreme Court because at the time, 48 states had a law that said
you cannot burn the American flag. Forty-eight states. So that's fact number one. When people say
this is wrong of President Trump to do this, know that in 1989, 488 states had this law in the
books. So the Supreme Court ruled and they said five to four that that law is unconstitutional.
It's a very close decision. Five to four. It wasn't a nine nothing slam dunk.
Congress in response passed a bill making it a federal crime to burn the American flag.
That bill passed overwhelmingly 380 to 38 in the House and in the Senate 91 to 9.
Then the Supreme Court ruled again that a federal law is unconstitutional as well. Again, a five to four decision.
this was 1990.
So what I want to push back on is this idea.
Again, a lot of conservatives still hold this as a libertarian kind of view that, oh, yeah, like obviously burning the flag is someone's First Amendment right.
No, not obviously.
And this was almost never believed to be the case.
For most of our history is unfathomable that anyone would ever burn the flag.
But then for another giant part of our history, it was illegal to burn the flag.
It was only in 1990 and just barely.
a five to four decision that this was deemed someone's First Amendment right.
Also worth noting that today in America, if you deface the rainbow crosswalk in any one of our
cities or heaven forbid tear down a pride flag, you'll be arrested for all sorts of crimes.
Just a month ago, the New York Times wrote about four teenagers arrested when they tore down some
pride flags in Atlanta. They were charged with obstruction, criminal damage to property,
conspiracy, and prowling. So offensive that the 16-year-old's
Dad was charged with failing to supervise his son.
It is time we reprioritize our national symbols.
