Starting point is 00:04:04 The definition of a mass shooting is the act of killing four or more people, not not including the perpetrator, typically at a single location. The first major mass shooting in modern America was at the University of Texas in August, 1966. 17 people were killed, 30 injured. President Lyndon Johnson issued a statement saying Congress must act to, quote, prevent the wrong person from obtaining a firearm. Of course, that rhetoric meant nothing. Since 1992, mass shootings in America have ramped up.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Under President Clinton, there were eight mass shootings in eight years. Worse was Columbine High School, April 20th, 1999. Shooters Dylan Clybold, Eric Harris, killed 13 of their fellow students and faculty, injured 24. Total during the Clinton presidency, 62 dead, 78 injured in mass shooting. George W. Bush, eight mass shootings. Worse was Virginia Tech, April 16, 2007, 32 dead, 17 injured. Total during Bush the Younger's presidency, 75 Americans dead, 62 injured. Starting point is 00:05:40 Florida, June 12, 2016, shooter Omar Mateen, who authorities say was ISIS-inspired, killed 49 people and injured 58 others in that club. Total during the Obama presidency, 236 dead, 257 injured in mass shootings. Donald Trump so far, six mass shootings, worse, the music festival gunned down in Las Vegas, October 1st, 2017, shooter Stephen Paddock killed 58 people, more than 500 injured. Total during Trump presidency to date, 102 dead, 535 hurt. So, since 1992, 92, 495 people have been killed more than 1,000 injured in mass shootings. Today, President Trump indicated he is open. He is open. to signing new gone laws. It is a lock that universal background checks will be in force very soon.
Starting point is 00:06:49 Most likely, high-caliber weaponry will also be constrained. Of course, the shootings this weekend were immediately politicized by people like Beto O'Rourke who blamed it on President Trump. The newspaper Newsday on Long Island editorialized, quote, nationalism is fueling domestic terrorism. Well, if that's true, what happened during the Obama years? Wasn't any nationalism then? The truth is that maniacs are encouraged on the internet to commit violence. We are never going to stop that, but politicians owe it to the public to be as vigilant as possible in trying to stop these mass killings.
