Starting point is 00:00:00 Bill O'Reilly here Friday, December 20th, 2019. You are listening to The O'Reilly Update is what's happening today in America. Christmas, the most celebrated holiday in the world, a day of family and gifts, to remember the birth of Jesus. The United States is home to 200 million of the planet's 2.1 billion Christians. And we Americans are famous for our festive spirit. According to Pew Research, more than 90% of the entire U.S. population celebrates Christmas. Even members of other religions do.
Starting point is 00:00:38 10% of non-Christian homes incorporate the holiday in some way. About 115 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles to visit friends and family, up double digits in the last decade, travel agent cite cheap fuel in a growing economy for the increase in travel. But beware, flying home the day after Christmas is going to cost you. Ticket prices to major American cities double on December 26th. If you think travel is expensive, Americans spend even more on gifts. Researchers say most shoppers spend about $1,000 on presents between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. Financial planners urge Americans not to use credit cards exclusively. Studies show more than then 20% of us incur major debt during the Christmas season, and 22% blame their negative credit score on Christmas gifts. From the department store to the dinner table, health experts say adults consume more than 5,000 calories on Christmas Day. Most popular dishes, turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing. The most popular Christmas beverage, eggnog. I'm sorry, not for me, but
Starting point is 00:01:56 But the drink was invented by monks in the 13th century, consisting of raw egg yolk, milk, and wine back then. But now the drink is mostly food coloring and sweetener. A typical glass of eggnog contains 48 grams of sugar. Unfortunately, the holidays do not please everyone. When asked what part of Christmas they disliked, 23% of people say they hate dealing with crowds. 20% complain about traffic, 19% say the worst part is not having enough money to spend on presents. But all in all, I think most of us would agree Christmas is the most magical holiday, especially for children.
Starting point is 00:02:44 Up next, a message of the day, impeachment polling. Right back with it. Millions of Americans have been diagnosed with cancer or a serious. illness. If you are one of them, and money is a problem, you're not alone. It's simple. If you own a life insurance policy of $100,000 or more, then life guide partners can evaluate your coverage for free to see if you qualify for cash now when you need it the most. Be ready to take down this number. If you own a life insurance policy of $100,000 or more, and you are living with a serious illness, then life guide partners can evaluate your coverage free to see if you qualify for cash now.
Starting point is 00:03:30 So write this number down. 1-888-guide-50. Totally free to call. Get rid of those insurance premiums. Stop paying them. Consider turning that life policy into cash. The number again, 1-888-Gide-50. 1-888-484-8-38-3-3-5-0-18-8-8-Gide-50. Call now.
Starting point is 00:03:59 Time now for the O'Reilly Update. Message of the day, how are Americans reacting to the impeachment situation? Let's take a look at some of the polls, but beware, polling is not always accurate. The Gallup poll, which is a very well-regarded study, asked this question a few days ago. Based on what you know at this point, do you think that Donald Trump should or should not be impeached and removed from office? Forty-six percent say, get them out of there. But 51 percent of the American public do not want the president removed. Rasmussen poll, same day, asked, do you favor or oppose the House impeachment of President Donald Trump? Now, remember, Rasmussen was the only national poll to predict Donald Trump's victory in 2016.
Starting point is 00:05:02 According to Rasmussen, it's a tie. 48% like impeachment, 46% don't but with the margin of error, that it is a draw. Emerson College in Boston took a poll. Do you support or oppose impeaching President Trump? 45% favor it? Forty-five percent don't favor it. Quinnipeak College. Do you think that President Trump should be impeached and removed from office? 45% should be impeached. 51%, the same number as Gallup should not be impeached and removed. Now, no one knows how the impeachment deal will affect the presidential election of 2020. More than 100 million Americans are expected to go to the polls next November.
Starting point is 00:05:55 But impeachment by then will be long in the rear view mirror. Today, the president, Donald Trump, told me face-to-face that he thinks impeachment will help him. Mr. Trump basing his assessment on record-breaking Republican fundraising, the Trump campaign will have more than $1 billion to spend trying to get the president reelected. That is far in a way the most money any presidential campaign has ever raised. Now, the Democrats think the opposite, of course. They think that Donald Trump's reputation is so damaged that independent Americans will join Democrats and get him out of office. The problem here is who is going to run against Donald Trump?
Starting point is 00:06:50 At this point, I think a fair assessment is none of the Democratic presidential contenders has caught the imagination of the American public. There is no Barack Obama in the field, no Bill Clinton. The campaigners are all flawed. and the socialists, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, are certainly not going to be elected by the American people, at least at this point in history. Now, the press, which will be a factor in the election, despises Donald Trump, generally speaking, so they'll do everything they can to promote impeachment.
Starting point is 00:07:28 They'll never forget about it. They'll always mention it. But the press's reputation in America has been badly damaged by their bias reporting against the president. So I don't think there'll be much of a factor there. But again, nobody knows for sure. I'm Bill O'Reilly and I approve that message by actually writing it. Now the O'Reilly Update brings me something you might not know. Tide information. Christmas is celebrated on every continent on Earth, even Antarctica. The annual celebration boasts some pretty iconic characters and traditions, Santa Claus, Eggnog, Rudolph, the reindeer. But here's something you might not know. Outside of Europe and North America, many different cultures celebrate the birth of Jesus in unique ways. In Caracas, Venezuela, for example, some of the faithful flock to Christmas Catholic Mass on roller skates.
Starting point is 00:09:38 The tradition is so well established that officials shut down major roads between 8 a.m. and noon to accommodate the Holy Rollers, so to speak. When you think of Christmas food, roast turkey, or baked ham typically come to mind. Not the case in South Africa, where a traditional feast includes fried caterpillars. pine tree emperor moth, better known as Christmas caterpillars by the locals, are eaten by the dozen. The bugs have picked for their festive red and green hues. Sounds delicious. In China, home to 54 million Christians, they use traditional secular ways to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Many hang decorative lanterns on windowsills, some even exchange secret Christian
Starting point is 00:10:31 messages using cards designed to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Of course, the government in China, not big fans of Christmas. While Santa may start his global flight from the North Pole, the South Pole is also home to some interesting celebrations. Across that continent, scientists from a dozen different countries marked the holiday with traditional meal, songs, and international gift exchanges. And here's something you might not know. Antarctica is the only place on Earth to witness Christmas with 24 hours of daylight. Also, a pretty good chance of enjoying a white Christmas, even though it's now summer down there.
Starting point is 00:11:18 All in all, the O'Reilly Update wants everybody to have a nice Christmas, even if you don't celebrate, enjoy the season, and appreciate this slogan, peace on Earth.
