Bill O'Reilly here.
You are listening to the O'Reilly Update.
Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater.
Thank you, Bill.
It is Friday, December 29th, 2023, the last weekend of the year.
You're listening to the O'Reilly update.
Here's what's happening today in America.
Nikki Haley clarifies her comment about the Civil War.
The White House floats a new name for the border crisis.
A survey reveals the most stressed out states in the country
and a nationwide poll gives new meaning to the term
man's best friend that's all coming up.
And then I'll be here with the message of the day
about the six stages of a country's rise and fall
and you can decide what stage we're in now.
And then, of course, we'll talk about how to not get to stage six.
You don't want to be in stage six ever.
We don't have to be.
That's all coming up.
But first, Nikki Haley facing criticism
over her comments at a town hall event in New Hampshire.
She stepped in it.
the Republican candidate was asked to specifically name the cause of the American Civil War.
She said, quote, I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run.
She later clarified the remark telling a radio host, of course the Civil War was about slavery.
That's the easy part of it.
The Biden administration floating a new name for the border crisis, all the left's good at controlling the language.
They'll let them get away with it.
Even the word migrant.
That's not birds migrate.
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken recently called the 8,000 person caravan making its way towards the United States, an example of irregular migration.
Since Joe Biden's inauguration on January 2021, at least 9 million illegal aliens have entered this country, obviously illegally.
Many people believe that figures closer to 15 million will never know.
A new report from Wallet Hub ranking the states with the highest rates of anxiety, places are judged by,
by personal finances, work, satisfaction, family relationships, and mental health.
The most stressful states in 2023 are Mississippi, West Virginia, New Mexico, Nevada, and number one, Louisiana.
People are most relaxed in Hawaii, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Utah.
A national survey from one poll finds that seven in ten dog owners consider their pet to be their best friend.
Half take the dog on daily errands, 40% bring them to restaurants.
35% on airplanes, 35%.
48 million American households have at least one dog.
The average owner spends $5,000 each year on the family dog,
mostly food toys, and trips to the vet,
which are getting more and more obscenely expensive themselves.
I'm Mike Slater, the six stages of the rise and fall of a country
and what we can do to prevent us from getting to stage six.
Next.
Let's face it, the U.S. economy is under stress.
National debt rising, trade war,
the markets, and meanwhile China is dumping the dollar and stockpiling gold.

Hey, I'm Mike Slater, filling up for Bill O'Reilly.
Now it's time for the O'Reilly Update.
Message of the Day.
In 1961, there was a historian, Lewis Mumford.
He wrote a book called The Culture of Cities.
And he made the argument that the rise and fall of a people, of a country, has six stages.
So let's go over them quickly and you can decide which stage we're in right now.
We've got a fun game here.
Which stage of our rise and or fall are we currently living in?
Stage one is the rise of the village community.
So we're growing food.
We're domesticating animals, building houses.
It's very basic.
All right.
Check done.
Pilgrims did that.
We're very thankful for them.
Stage two, the polis.
So things are coming together.
So now we got common meeting places, common defense, development of trades and crafts.
We're growing extra food.
So now there's time for more nurturing of the family and education and sciences.
And now we can build a theater and a cathedral and a stadium and stuff like that.
Stage three, the metropolis.
So one city in this country is growing.
growing bigger than the rest, but so big it can't sustain itself.
So it relies on other cities and towns to bring it food and supplies.
Think New York City.
New York City can't grow their own food.
But they also have to bring in things from other countries,
which means they're importing foreign people and traders and students into this city.
And with them, they bring new habits and ideas and they challenge the old ways of doing things.
Stage four, the Megalopolis.
this is the beginning of the decline
for this historian
Louis Mumford. Now it's
all about getting bigger.
Nothing else matters.
I would say we saw that and
still see it in this country with the obsession
that our elites have about GDP.
We got to bring in more
illegal immigrants because that means
there's more people for us to sell things to
which means we can grow our GDP.
Nothing else matters. We need more, more,
more, more. As Mumford
puts it, the owners of the instruments
of production and distribution, subordinate every other fact in life to the achievement of riches
and the display of wealth. And in this phase, the threat of widespread barbarism arises.
Stage five, the Tyrannapolis, as in tyranny. In this stage, you have the politicians where it's all
about, what can I get for my people at the expense of everyone else? The historian says,
widespread moral apathy, failure of civic responsibility to find this stage.
Each group, each individual takes where it can get away with.
Multiplication of the Lumpin proletariat.
Oh, that's a great word from Karl Marx.
It means basically useful idiot.
The Lumpin proletariat demanding its share of bread and circuses.
Uncertainty hangs over every prospect of the future.
We just yesterday talked about how 64% of Americans don't,
think the American dream exists anymore. There's no such thing as the American dream.
Decline in the rate of population increase. Our population in America is going down if it weren't for
immigration and general loss of nerve. At stage six, the final stage, war and famine and disease
rack both city and countryside. The physical towns become mere shells. We're losing our
small towns in this country. There's no question. The monuments and books no longer convey
meaning, tearing down statues of our founding fathers, for instance. And eventually,
the civilization is gone. Babylon, Nineveh, Rome. So we'd like to avoid that stage. I fear we're
getting pretty close. I'd say we're in the beginning of stage five. But the goodness is we don't
have to move on to stage six. There can be a revival. And we can get back to the purpose and the
joy of that second and third stage. I'll give you a real life example of that revival that we
can be inspired by. Next.
Power, politics and the people behind the headlines.

the world. Listen to Podforce One with me, Miranda Devine, every week on Apple Podcasts, Spotify,

O'Reilly. Now it's time for something you might not know. How can a city or a culture or a country
experience a revival and not fall into that despair and ultimate destruction like so many other
cities and cultures and history that we were talking about in the last segment.
And before I give an example of a revival, maybe think of a little said it.
What do you mean?
What countries or cultures have like don't exist anymore?
Well, let's just look at reserve currencies.
Back in the 1200s, the reserve currency was the Florin from Florence.
That was the currency of the world.
And surely the people of Florence thought they would be the reserve currency forever.
And then the Venetians came around.
They became the reserve currency.
And then the Portuguese.
And then the Spanish.
the Netherlands, the Dutch, and then the French were the reserve currency,
and then the British were the reserve currency. And now we are the reserve currency.
But here we are. We think we'll be the reserve currency forever.
What makes us think that? All these other countries thought they would be the reserve
currency of the world forever, too? They weren't. Why do we think we are somehow guaranteed
to be the reserve currency forever? So if we want to stay on top, we need a revival.
Let's look to Dresden. Dresden is an 800-year-old city in Germany that the British bombed
pretty much to smithereens in World War II.
25,000 people were killed.
When the main cathedral in Dresden was bombed,
they let it sit there, broken, destroyed,
for about 50 years as a sort of memorial.
And finally, the people decided to bring it back to life.
So starting in 1993,
the people of Dresden sorted the bricks,
literally sorted the bricks
and put it back together as best they could,
this huge, massive cathedral.
Google Dresden Cathedral.
cathedral rebuilt and it'll pop right up. It took 11 years. And also all the buildings around it,
they had to be rebuilt too. Everything there is new. But they rebuilt it in the same architectural style
where if you saw it, you'd say, well, first of all, it's a really old building. And clearly that's in
Germany. The architecture is regional. It's specific. It's objectively beautiful. And it's
soul nourishing. And I love this story because it's possible to physically rebuild cities and it's
possible to rebuild the soul of a city and a country as well. There just has to be a revival of
principles. We can't rebuild if we don't know what the building looked like. And we can't
rebuild our country if we don't know who we are. We need to be the people who build again,
build beautiful things. We can do it. It's been done before if we want to. I'm Mike Slater,
