Starting point is 00:00:00 Bill O'Reilly here. You are listening to the weekend edition of the O'Reilly update. Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater. Thank you, Bill. Here's what's happening this week in America. Nikki Haley clarifies her comment about the Civil War. The White House floats a new name for the border crisis. A survey reveals the most stressed out states in the country.
Starting point is 00:00:26 And a nationwide poll gives new meaning to the term, man's best friend that's all coming up and then i'll be back with the message of the day wall street journal asked a poll do you believe the american dream still holds true and you'll be amazed uh discouraged by how many people think it does not that's all coming up but first niki haley facing criticism over her comments at a town hall event in new hampshire she stepped in it the republican candidate was asked to specifically name the cause of the american civil war she said quote i think the cause of the civil war was basically how good government was going to run.
Starting point is 00:01:01 She later clarified the remark, telling a radio host, of course the Civil War was about slavery. That's the easy part of it. The Biden administration floating a new name for the border crisis. All the left's good at controlling the language. Don't let them get away with it. Even the word migrant. That's not birds migrate. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken recently called the 8,000 person caravan making its way towards
Starting point is 00:01:27 the United States. an example of irregular migration. Since Joe Biden's inauguration on January 2021, at least 9 million illegal aliens have entered this country, obviously illegally. Many people believe that figures closer to 15 million will never know. A new report from Wallet Hub ranking the states with the highest rates of anxiety, places are judged by personal finances, work satisfaction, family relationships, and mental health, the most stressful states,
Starting point is 00:01:57 2023 or Mississippi, West Virginia, New Mexico, Nevada, and number one, Louisiana. People are most relaxed in Hawaii, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Utah. A national survey from one poll finds that seven in ten dog owners consider their pet to be their best friend. Half take the dog on daily errands, 40% bring them to restaurants, 35% on Airplanes, 35%. 48 million American households have at least one dog. The average owner spends $5,000 each year
Starting point is 00:02:32 on the family dog, mostly food toys, and trips to the vet, which are getting more and more obscenely expensive themselves. Philan it for Bill O'Reilly on today's message of the day. The Wall Street Journal asked the poll question, do you believe that the American dream still holds true? Only 36% said it held true. 18% said it never held true.
Starting point is 00:04:13 And 45% say it once held true, but doesn't anymore. So it's 63% of Americans say, no, there is no American dream. That's bad. But it also requires us to ask the question, well, what is the American dream? The Wall Street Journal defines it as, if you work hard, you'll get ahead. And I think that's a fine definition. I think most people would define it's something like that. But I would like to move the American dream past a purely materialistic definition.
Starting point is 00:04:46 If you work hard, you'll make more money. Or if you work hard, you'll own a house. Well, what if you don't make more money? are you you're not living the American dream what if you never own a house you can't live the American dream what if the Fed raises interest rates and you can't get a house now you're cut off from the American dream I don't like that the American dream has to be more than just material things even the guy who coined the term his name was James Truslow Adams in 1981 this is the quote that always gets quoted he said life should be better and richer and
Starting point is 00:05:16 fuller for everyone with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement regardless of social class or circumstance of birth. So that's where people get the materialistic definition. The next line, but no one ever quotes this one. He said it is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order virtue in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable and be recognized by others for what they are,
Starting point is 00:05:49 regardless of the fortuitous circumstance of birth or position. So he defined the American dream, the guy who coined the term, as living a life of virtue. One of my all-time favorite stories, and I hate to share it here so briefly, but please read the book Road to Dawn. It's the story of Josiah Henson, a slave.
Starting point is 00:06:07 41 years of torture and betrayal. He finally escaped, and he hiked 600 miles at night to the border of Canada, to Lake Erie, carrying his two children on his back. back 600 miles and he gets to the lake and there's a ferry captain that he has to ask to get across and who knows if this guy is pro-slavery and this could have been the moment where he gets sent back to slavery forever but he had to take the chance and sure enough the man agreed to
Starting point is 00:06:36 give him a ride across so this man sails him across and josiah and his wife and two kids they walk off the boat and as they're walking away the captain says be a good fellow won't you and Josiah responded, yes, I will. I will use my freedom well. A lot of people will say that the American dream is freedom. But freedom's not the end of the story. Because freedom to do what? You could, the freedom to do very bad things. Freedom is the beginning of the story. Josiah knew it. It's using your freedom well. So if I may humbly request that we try to move away from an outcome-based, materialistic American dream, and instead have an American dream based off of using your freedom to live a life of virtue, or as Thomas Jefferson put it in the Declaration of Independence,
Starting point is 00:07:29 the freedom to pursue happiness. Thomas Jefferson knew that true happiness can only be achieved by living a life of virtue, and that dream can always be lived, no matter how bad the economy might be. So does the American dream still hold true? In the end, that's really Up to you. Something you might not know. Next. Now it's time for something you might not know. Have you ever heard of safe mobility offices? Safe mobility offices. Don't worry. No one has. Here's a deal. For a long time, conservatives would say, hey, we got to shut down the border because the coyotes, the drug cartels, they're smuggling people in and they're forcing women to pay with their bodies and it's super dangerous and awful and how are we allowing this to happen? And we thought the left would say, oh, wow, great argument.
Starting point is 00:08:57 We should shut down the border. You're right. And instead they said, well, why don't we just smuggle in people ourselves? So they created safe mobility offices. There are 100 of them south of our border, in other countries south of our border. They're illegal immigrant processing centers that We set up in the other countries so that they don't even have to take the dangerous journey through Mexico to get here. So what are these places? No one knows. But don't think it's to prevent people from coming to America.
Starting point is 00:09:30 That's not it. Here is Majorcas, the head of Homeland Security. He says, these are places where we feel a humanitarian as well as the security imperative to meet people where they are, to cut the smugglers out, meaning we just do it ourselves. and to provide them with a safe and orderly way to arrive to the United States if they qualify for relief. So now we're the smugglers.
Starting point is 00:09:54 But here's the thing. You catch what he said at the end. If they qualify for relief, none of these people qualify for relief. None of them. There are five reasons why you would be granted asylum in front of a judge. There's five.
Starting point is 00:10:06 If you're persecuted in your home country because of your race, religion, nationality, social group, or political opinion. None of these people seeking asylum qualify for asylum. None of them do. Crime is not a reason to get asylum. Poverty is not a reason.
Starting point is 00:10:22 Wanting a better life for you and your kids or a better job. None of those, that's not asylum. There are five reasons. There's not a single judge in this country that will give someone asylum for the reason of poverty. But they get here and then we give them an asylum hearing and we can't touch them until then. These safe mobility offices are going to fly people into America in the name of asylum. And then they stay here until they have a hearing with a judge. But do you know when these hearings are?
Starting point is 00:10:49 There's one woman from Venezuela, who is an American now? She has an asylum hearing in New York City on January 12th. 2031. We are not a country if we don't have borders.
