Bill O'Reilly here. You are listening to the O'Reilly update. Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater.
Thank you, Bill. It is Friday, February 17th, 2023. Here's what's happening today in America. Would you drink the water? The Great Exodus continues. How long will Fetterman even be Senator? And a good Samaritan saves the day that's all coming up. And then Bill will be here with a message of the day. But first, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance went to a creek near that train.
derailment in Ohio. He took a video of him dragging a stick along the bottom of the creek.
And when he does, a bunch of chemicals rise to the surface. The governor says test revealed no
detection of contaminants in raw water from the five wells that feed into East Palestine's municipal
water system. But J.D. Vance says, I think that if the EPA administrator wants to stand here
and tell people that the tap water is safe, by all means, they should be willing to drink it.
Would you drink it? The great California Exodus continued.
From April 2020 to July 22, the difference between the number of people moving into California versus moving out, 700,000 people moved out.
New York was in second place, a loss of 556,000 people.
But the governor of California, Gavin Newsom, who I believe will run for president, what's his message to the country going to be when people can't wait to get out of his state?
More people are leaving than anywhere else.
What's his pitch going to be to bring the California way to America?
Newsom ran a TV ad in Florida last 4th of July,
and he said, I urge all of you to join you in Florida to join us in California
where we still believe in freedom.
And no one listened, the state that gained the most population, Florida, 797,000 people.
Pennsylvania Senator John Federman has checked himself into Walter Reed Hospital to receive
treatment for clinical depression.
The exploitation of this man for political gain was a sick display.
But when he resigns, the Democrat governor of Pennsylvania,
we'll just name another Democrat to take his place for the rest of the six-year term.
Great story out of Long Island.
So grandmother got out of her SUV and walked into a store.
And then just a minute or so later, she ran out screaming frantically
because someone stole her car and was driving away.
That's a problem enough.
But the bigger problem was her 14-month-old grandchild was
in the backseat sleeping.
That's when Bill Gorga, who happened to just be right there, said, get in.
And he followed the carjacker and kidnapper in his Ford Ranger truck.
He told Grandma, don't worry, we're getting this guy.
He was able to catch up and drove in front of the guy and braked fast.
Grandma got out of the car to try to get the baby out, but then the guy drove away now
with Grandma in the car.
So now the guy had to take after them again with both of them in the car.
He was able to drive the guy off the road.
Police arrested him.
Well done, Bill.
grandma and baby are safe.
I'm Mike Slater.

Time now for the O'Reilly Update, message of the day.
On this Friday, as you may know, three young people are dead after yet another mass shooting.
This one at Michigan State University. As usual, a left-wing politician's want to crack down on guns,
but not on the criminals who shoot them.
Far left, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is demanding more gun control, even as she knows the killer who committed suicide, was allowed to walk free by a progressive prosecutor whom Whitmer supported.
Here is the situation.
In the year 2019, Anthony McCray was arrested for illegally carrying a handgun.
Instead of being charged with a felony, soft-on-crime D.A. Carol Seaman, a favorite of George Soros, dismissed the felony charge, which carries a five-year prison term and accepted a misdemeanor plea from McCray.
Well, the criminal walked, receiving 12 months probation. If Seaman had done her elected job, McRae would say,
still be in prison, and the three young people would be alive today. Despite that, the
progressive left continues to push soft on crime policies as the body count mounts. This brutal
situation has been going on far too long. Reasonable gun restrictions, okay, but violent crime
will never improve unless the criminals themselves are held to account. But the progress
of left fights that. I'm Bill O'Reilly. I approve the message by writing it. You can reach me.

Let's go to the mail, Robert Baker, Toronto, Ohio. Bill, I live about 40 miles south of the
train derailment in East Palestine and would like your take about what truly happened and about
the air and water quality in our area. I'd love to give you my take, but I don't know, Robert.
I mean, and I watched the speculation and I watched the foolishness of these commentators.
I don't know.
No, it's up to your state, Ohio, to brief you and tell you.
If it were me, 40 miles, that's pretty far.
But if I was in 20 miles of East Palestine, I get out.
Now, the state is going to cover your expenses, I understand.
The state of Ohio will cover you moving out for a while and finding other.
lodgings. I hope they do.
FEMA, where's FEMA? Where's
Biden? Nowhere, of course.
Where's Buttigieg? Come on.
This is how incompetent the federal government is,
but it's a state thing.
I don't know about the water. I wouldn't be drinking it.
All right? I mean,
but I can't give you any solid
information yet. It just doesn't
exist.
Pete Mulaveld, Salem,
Oregon, capital of the state.
Most learned pundits, such as yourself,
O'Reilly, seem to agree that Trump should not
ridicule, likely opponents, but do you think he has to do that to shore up his base?
No.
Base likes him, knows what he did in the presidency.
Why do you have to attack DeSantis?
And when he ran in 16, yeah, that was a good strategy.
Now, I don't think that's going to help him.
Rick, socialism is a philosophy of failure, creed of ignorance, gospel of envy.
That's a quote from Winston Churchill.
Thank you for their quote.
Melly, socialist is this.
If you are born, you're entitled.
If you are, I don't know about everybody entitled.
I'm not going to say any more than that.
In a moment, something you might not know.
Power, politics, and the people behind the headlines.
I'm Miranda Devine, New York Post columnist,

Now the O'Reilly update brings you something you might not know.
On this day in 1801, the country's fourth presidential election was decided by the House of Representatives.
The lawmakers selected Thomas Jefferson to lead the nation following a tie in the Electoral College.
Jefferson's victory ended one of the nastiest presidential campaigns in history.
It also resolved a major constitutional crisis.
Here is the story.
At the time, each member of the Electoral College cast two votes.
Ballots for President and Vice President, however, were received identically.
There wasn't a delineation.
And whoever got the most electoral votes was President, second Vice President.
In 1800, Thomas Jefferson, and his
running mate, Aaron Burr each received 73 electoral votes. Under Article 2, Section 1 of the
Constitution, a contest was then sent to the House. Each of the 16 states at the time would cast
one vote to pick the next commander-in-chief. On February 11, 1801, Jefferson and Burr lobbied
lawmakers with promises of cabinet appointments and other lucrative positions. On February 17th,
lawmakers selected Thomas Jefferson to lead the Young Republic.
Alexander Hamilton of New York, a former Treasury Secretary,
played a key role in breaking the deadlock.
The final tally, 10 states for Jefferson,
four for Aaron Burr, two refuse to vote.
The 12th Amendment quickly followed that electoral crisis.
Going forward, the college would cast separate votes for president and vice president.
And here's something else you might.
might not know. Hamilton's role in handing the election to Thomas Jefferson would eventually
lead to his death. Aaron Burr was furious at the New York politician, often claiming the election
was stolen by Alexander Hamilton. A few years later, Hamilton fiercely campaigned against
Burr, who was then running for governor of New York. The two men agreed to a duel to settle
the rivalry. On July 11th, 1804, Aaron Burr shot and killed Alexander Hamilton in northern New Jersey.
Thomas Jefferson was re-elected five months later. Back after this.
