Bill O'Reilly here. You are listening to the O'Reilly update.
Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater.
Thank you, Bill. It is Thursday, February 9th, 2023. Here's what's happening today in America.
Record low ratings for the State of the Union. Record high number of Americans say they're worse off.
Disney losses and Microsoft wins all coming up. And then, of course, Bill will be here with the message of the day.
But first, did you watch the State of the Union?
Only 23 million people did.
That is the lowest watched State of the Union ever.
Trump, for comparison's sake, got 47 million viewers.
Barack Obama's first State of the Union in 2009 got 52 million
and the highest ratings ever were Bill Clinton in 1993.
It was also one of the longest.
Clinton had 65 million viewers in 93.
A Gallup poll that they've been asking since 1976,
would you say that you are financially better off now than you were a year ago?
50% of Americans say they are worse off.
That is the highest since 2008 during the recession then,
where 55% of people said they were worse off.
But other than those two times,
it's never been 50% saying they're worse off.
Yet oddly, perhaps, 60% of Americans think they'll be better off a year from now.
And I appreciate the optimism, but why?
What do you think is going to happen a year from now
with the same people in office?
Are you better off financially than a year ago?
And did Biden State of the Union change your perception of what's going to happen the next two years?
Disney Plus lost 2.4 million subscribers in the last three months of 2022.
That's their first decline in subscribers since launching in 2020.
Now, as much as I'd like to blame it on Disney going woke these last few years,
they're blaming it on Disney Plus in India losing their rights to the Indian Premier League cricket matches.
Well, maybe the country with the most Disney Plus subscribers is India.
They have 52 million subscribers.
That's more than our 42 million.
And we're way ahead.
The third highest is Brazil with 8 million subscribers.
The new CEO of Disney, who's the old CEO, announced that they're cutting 7,000 jobs.
Microsoft has announced that their search engine, Bing, will now be powered by artificial intelligence, much like the chat GPT that you may have heard about.
So the deal is when you ask Bing a question, it will give you an answer.
answer with not just a list of websites, but with more natural language. Microsoft is planning to
invest $10 billion in the company behind chat, GPD, 10 billion. Does this mean people will start
to use Bing? They've been around since 2009, and of all the searches on the internet,
only 2.4% are on Bing. I'm Mike Slater. Bill O'Reilly with your message of the day. Next.

Time now for the O'Reilly Update, Message of the Day.
The real State of the Union.
President Biden had good energy Tuesday night, but he didn't say very much, although there were many, many words.
One hour and 12 minutes worth of words.
The State of the Union address was standard-issued Democratic Party, lots of giveaway proposals, corporations are evil.
As usual, there were deceptions from the President.
The biggest one is that he cut the deficit by 1.4.4.4.5.5.
trillion. Ahem. In his first year, Biden ran up a record-breaking $2.8 trillion deficit. Second year,
the deficit declined to a still colossal $1.4 trillion. So he's a deficit cutter? Come on.
The hits were rolled out in the usual fashion. Pay your fair share, ban assault rifles,
comprehensive immigration reform, which means amnesty,
More abortion, please.
If you like all that, you like the speech.
Now, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders did not like the speech.
In her Republican rebuttal, she called Mr. Biden a weak president and a captive of the far-left crazies.
The governor's speech was crisp, whether you agree or not.
And she is definitely a future presidential candidate herself.
I'm Bill O'Reilly. I approve the message by writing it.

All right. Let's go to the mail. Matt Riemann, Landenburg, Pennsylvania.
We'd all like to blame Biden for inflation, but doesn't Trump take some responsibility
because he signed the 2.3 trillion COVID-releash package?
It's true.
to. And that package wasn't enough to ignite inflation. All right. Remember, when he left,
it was 1.4. That package was signed before, well before. So I wouldn't be blaming Trump there.
Michael Viadro, O'Snyside, New York, the United States doesn't have to inform and demand an explanation
for a Chinese government regarding the balloon. Violating prohibited airspace,
establish for national security may result in military intervention.
Okay, but do you really want to ignite?
You know, you ask them for an explanation.
You've got to be sane here.
I wouldn't let China push the USA around if I were president, but I would do it very deliberately.
Charles Lloyd, Omaha, Nebraska, I disagree with your assertion, O'Reilly, whether it was
an intelligent gathering excursion or a possible nefarious delivery system, it was a danger.
it also displayed to the world how vulnerable and slow to respond our government has become.
Well, I won't argue with that.
The response was slow and they tried to cover it up.
The Biden administration, no doubt.
But again, when you confront a nuclear-armed country,
it's got to be deliberate.
Sally Harrington, also Omaha and Nebraska, a big audience we have there.
Bill just wondering why there was no talk about Canadians shooting down the balloon.
Little Justin Trudeau is not going to shoot down any balloons,
unless they're at a party for his children.
I mean, Canada does not have that kind of grit.
Joanne Covington, Richmond, Kentucky.
Trump needs the independence to win.
That's not going to happen.
As a 73-year-old, I can overlook his personality.
My friends cannot.
They will not vote for him.
That's his deficit.
Trump ran a country well,
but his deficit is his personality, no doubt about it.
In a moment, something you might not know.
Power, politics and the people behind the headlines.

Now the O'Reilly Update brings you something you might not know. On this day in 1996, lawmakers in Washington
passed a new law that would limit the free speech of billions of Americans. For the first time,
the developing Internet would be subject to the same regulations as the rest of the traditional
media. Here is the story of the Communications Decency Act. Its intent was to prevent minors
from gaining access to sexually explicit material on the net. At the time, online message boards
were used for human trafficking, drug smuggling, prostitution, murder for hire,
child porn, and neo-Nazi stuff.
The penalty for violating the law included fines, imprisonment, and both.
Immediately after President Clinton signed the statute into law,
the American Civil Liberties Union and other organizations challenged its constitutionality.
The American Library Association filed a separate suit attacking the act.
Both lawsuits targeted the provisions criminalized,
indecent and patently offensive online communications, but not the provision criminalizing
obscene online expression. In 1997, the Supreme Court ruled the Communications Decency Act
to be unconstitutional because it suppressed a significant amount of protected adult speech
in order to prevent minors from accessing harmful messages. One part of the original bill that
remains to this day is section 230. The provision provides legal immunity to net platforms who
publish information from a third party. That also applies to social media. The law states,
quote, no provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher
or speaker of any information provided by another information content.
provider. Section 230 gained national attention in the 2020 election when Donald Trump claimed social
media platforms were intentionally censoring his campaign, but were completely immune to lawsuits
for doing that. Back after this.
