Starting point is 00:00:33 Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater. Thank you, Bill. It is Friday, January 10th, 2025. Here's what's happening today in America. Karen Bass feeling the heat. Insurance companies leaving TikTok ban and Trump meeting with Republican governors. It's all coming up.
Starting point is 00:00:47 Then Bill's going to be here with your message of the day. The fires are still burning. Many zero percent contained. Firefighters still trying to fight. it from the ground and the air, people still evacuating, a incorrect evacuation order was issued via text message yesterday. What a horrific mistake that was. This will go down as the most expensive disaster in California history.
Starting point is 00:01:07 The mayor of Los Angeles back from her trip to Ghana left knowing there was a wildfire risk. On January 2nd, the National Weather Service warned L.A. about extreme fire conditions. On the fourth, the Los Angeles National Weather Service issued a high wind watch and fire alert. She left to Ghana on that day. On the sixth, Newsom began emergency preparedness. She stayed in Ghana. The fire started on the seventh. She stayed in Ghana. She finally arrived the next day on the eighth to a burned out city. Only to then hold a press conference where reading a piece of paper, she said, all the information I just spoke about can be found at URL. That's literally what she said. Like Ron Burgundy, she just said URL. Insurance is going to be a
Starting point is 00:01:52 problem in California. Between 2020 and 2022, insurance companies did not renew or denied the renewal of 2.8 million homeowners policies. 531 in L.A. State Farm recently denied 1,600 homeowners insurance in Pacific Palisades. The reason why is because California is so expensive, any insurance claim costs a ton of money. So the state then put a cap on how much insurance companies can increase their rates. So the insurance companies just said, well, we're out. We can't do business here. My insurance was canceled last year when I lived in San Diego. So people are left with only the state insurance option, which is super expensive too. Rates increased 120% since 2020 on the state option. And that's paid for by the few insurance companies that are left.
Starting point is 00:02:35 And state officials recently said that a catastrophic event would make that go insolvent as well. And if they run out of money, all the insurance companies add a surcharge to everyone else's policy to make up the difference. In short, it's about to get even more expensive. to live in California. The Supreme Court hearing the TikTok case today, TikTok has until the 19th to sell their app or it is not allowed to be downloaded in the United States. 34% of adults use the app, 63% of people under 17. Trump met with Republican governors yesterday. Him and Stephen Miller previewed plans for 100 executive orders. I talked to the former acting Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security in the last administration. He said nothing is going to stop
Starting point is 00:03:16 Trump from securing this border, including using the military, to show. it down. I'm Mike Slater. Bill O'Reilly with your message of the day. Next. On this Friday, it's good for the world to see our politicians honor the life of Jimmy Carter. The perception of America in some quarters is a spiteful country full of partisan rancor. It's true, the media pushes that image, but for the regular folks, its character and performance that should matter most in bestowing power, not ideology. President Carter tried hard to be an effective leader, but simply lacked the experience to run the most powerful country on Earth. He was an
Starting point is 00:05:10 honest man who strongly believed in Judeo-Christian tradition, but that is not enough. A president must be a tough problem solver in the dangerous world in which we all live. Now, I dealt with Jimmy Carter on helping severely wounded veterans. He was not a fan of mine, and that strained our interactions a bit. But in the end, he did the right thing, and with all five living presidents supporting the high-tech track wheelchair program, we raised more than $30 million. every vet who needed the machine received one. As the nation pays its respect to the man from planes, it is constructive to understand our patriotic duty. You may not like a specific president,
Starting point is 00:05:58 but you should always respect the office of the presidency. It is the most important part of our republic. Rest in peace, Jimmy Carter. I'm Bill O'Reilly. I approve the message by writing it. You can reach me. Bill at bill o'Reilly.com. com bill at bill o'reilly dot com name in town if you wish to opine let's go to the mail don concierish member and don you want something checked out you got your email right to me uh i have forgotten much about greenland but in any case this would be a great deal if donald trump could get it the danes make a bunch of dough america gets greater security more resources i agree i think that deal benefits denmark and the united states
Starting point is 00:06:44 and I don't know if Don Jr. is the right emissary there, but Trump world isn't boring. Enrick, Bill, has there been any mention of what role Vice President Vance will play in President Trump's administration? Not specifically. Looks to me like he's going to be a troubleshooter. You remember that Mike Pence didn't have a specific role in his first term, but he did dine, have lunch with Trump, twice a week, Pence, and Trump relied on him for advice. Lloyd, I would have preferred passing the Lake and Riley Act in a couple of weeks because President Biden will veto it. Look, the Senate isn't going to vote on it until Trump's in, okay?
Starting point is 00:07:32 Senate's controlled by Republicans. Thune, the senator from South Dakota, is in charge now. McConnell isn't anymore. It's not going to put it up for a vote until Trump's there. Rosanne Gorni, Corpus Christi, Texas. You know, I have the key to the city of Corpus Christi that was mayor down there years ago gave it to me. Very nice.
Starting point is 00:07:55 You didn't miss anything, Bill. President Trump was not angry in his press conference. If anything, he was gracious to answer all those questions. That was one of the most stunning thing, Roseanne, and that's why I wanted your input. I mean, I know the guy for 35 years. I know when he's angry. It wasn't even close to being angry in that press conference. CNN is so angry.

If confirmed by the Senate, the former Fox News host will lead the biggest corporation in the world. Here are some facts about the Pentagon.
Starting point is 00:09:14 There are six branches of the U.S. military, each with their own mission. The Army, one million soldiers, handled ground combat. The Marines, 200,000 troops provide sea, land, and air support for all other branches of the military. They also guard America's embassies worldwide. The Navy, half a million sailors operate a fleet of 500 warships and 3,000 planes. The Air Force, 300,000. Americans fly a strike force of 10,000 aircraft and an undisclosed number of drones. They also manage the country's intercontinental missiles.
Starting point is 00:09:56 The Coast Guard, 75,000 Americans defend our shores from foreign invasion and drugs. In recent years, the Guard is focused on smuggling human trafficking and terror threats at U.S. ports. The newest branch of the Pentagon, the Space Force. The agency now employs 9,000 workers who manage 80 spaceships and satellites. In total, the U.S. military has 2 million active duty personnel with an annual budget of $780 billion. Wow. Right now, the armed forces are 85% male, 15% female, 50% are white, 22% black, 20% Hispanic, 7% Asian. The highest rates of recruitment
Starting point is 00:10:52 take place in Texas, California, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. Starting salary for soldiers, just $20,000 a year. The highest paid positions are Air Force generals. They can earn $200,000 per annum. And here's something else you might not know. America's closest military competitor is China.
