You are listening to the O'Reilly Update. Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater. Thank you, Bill. It is Thursday, January 2nd, 2025. Still got to get used to saying that, of course. You're listening to the O'Reilly Update here as it's happening today in America. Terror in New Orleans. Explosion in Las Vegas. 40% of people in L.A. don't feel safe. A new service.
Starting point is 00:01:00 Ravei ranks the best places to live in the United States. It's all coming up, and then my message of the day. But first, terror strikes the city of New Orleans, a Texas-born man, drove his truck into a crowd on New Year's Eve on Bourbon Street, killing at least 10 people, entering another 30. Police found an ISIS flag on the vehicle after the attack. The perpetrator was shot and killed by police. There's a video of maybe a dozen police officers a couple blocks away when this happened.
Starting point is 00:01:29 they're just standing there, and they heard the attack, and they all just started sprinting, not even knowing what they were sprinting to, but police ended up killing him. Then a cyber truck, that's Tesla's truck SUV thing. Someone lit a bomb inside of that, outside, right outside the front of Donald Trump's hotel in Las Vegas. I'm sure you see the symbolism here, not only Donald Trump's hotel in Las Vegas, but the explosion was inside of Elon Musk's Tesla truck. There's video of the back of the truck after firefighters put out the flames, and you can see gas canisters and explosives.
Starting point is 00:02:08 Elon Musk wrote on Twitter, the evil knuckleheads picked the wrong vehicle for a terrorist attack. Cybertruck actually contained the explosion and directed the blast upwards. Not even the glass doors of the lobby were broken. Four and ten Americans in L.A. say the homeless problem makes them feel unsafe. This poll from the hill finds a growing number of residents concerned with human waste, used nests. needles and people suffering with major mental health problems. 75,000 people live in the streets of L.A., the most of any city in the United States. That's up 20% in just the last five years.
Starting point is 00:02:39 U.S. News and World Report ranking the most livable towns in America, cities judged by income, pollution, access to health care, and life expectancy, the top five in 2025, San Jose, California, Boulder, Colorado, Green Bay, Wisconsin, Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Number one, Huntsville, Alabama. The least desirable town in the U.S., Detroit, Michigan. 45% of people in the motor city live below the poverty line. The message of the day about this terrorist attack in New Orleans coming up next, followed by something you might not know about what John Adams wanted the seal of America to be. It's next. Let's face it, the U.S. economy is under stress. National debt rising, trade war, shaking the markets. And meanwhile, China is dumping the

Mike Slater, filling in for Bill O'Reilly. Now it's time for the O'Reilly update message of the day. Terrorist attack in New Orleans. This terrorist drove on to Bourbon Street around a parked police car, drove up on the sidewalk to get around this blockade.
Starting point is 00:04:42 And this is, it's unbelievable. It's like the security lapses that all came together when Donald Trump got shot in the head at that rally in Pennsylvania. but the security bollards that are there to stop cars from driving onto Bourbon Street, they weren't there because they're getting replaced to prepare for the Super Bowl next month. So while the new ones were being installed, they were using these parked police cars. And it didn't work in this case. The police chief said we did indeed have a plan, but the terrorist defeated it.
Starting point is 00:05:19 There's been multiple attacks like this, with terrorists driving. a car through crowds of people just a couple days ago. In Germany, a terrorist drove through a Christmas market, killed five people, injured 200. The FBI back in 2010 wrote a memo entitled Terrorist Use of Vehicle Ramming Tactics. They said vehicle ramming offers terrorists with limited access to explosives or weapons, an opportunity to conduct a homeland attack with minimal prior training or experience. Al-Qaeda, they had like this magazine, this online magazine in 2010, where they encouraged their followers to use vehicles to mow down the enemies of Allah.
Starting point is 00:06:03 2017, an ISIS guy drove his pickup in New York City, killed eight, injured 11 more. Nice, France, 80 were killed when a terrorist drove a 19-ton truck into a crowd. So this is the question at the moment. Is this one isolated lunatic murderer? or is this the part of something much bigger to come? I talk every week on my radio show with Dr. Sebastian Gorka, who in just a few days now will be the senior director for counterterrorism. He starts on January 20th at noon,
Starting point is 00:06:40 the second after Donald Trump takes the oath of office, Dr. Gorka will be the head of counterterrorism in America. And the day after he was named to have this position, he told me that, let's just say Slater, that Biden's led in 10 million illegal aliens. If 0.01% of them are terrorists, that's a thousand terrorists in America right now, let alone if it's 0.1%. That's 10,000. How coordinated are these bad actors here in America? I'm haunted of something Trump said the other day.
Starting point is 00:07:21 This was just before the Christmas break. And Trump was talking about all the things that we're going to do in America and all the things we're going to get done and how amazing it's going to be, how incredible. He said the golden age of America has begun. But then he said this too. So it's the golden age of America and that's what it's going to be. And we hope we don't have any intervening problems because things happen like out of nowhere came the China virus out of nowhere came other things we don't want to have who knows what can still
Starting point is 00:07:52 happen that could try to derail all that we have planned in these next few years here I don't know of any administration that has ever had to do so much so fast at one time and still managed to keep the American people's focus on what's most important are you ready we have a lot to do to make this America's golden era and we can't let anything get in our way we can't let anything derail us we have a lot of problems to solve but this is the time
Starting point is 00:08:23 this is the time to make America great again something you might not know next Amazon Pharmacy presents painful thoughts 20 more minutes to kill in the pharmacy before my prescription is ready maybe I'll grab some deeply
Starting point is 00:08:40 discounted out of season Halloween candy I never had a chocolate pumpkin with raisins before Those were raisins right Next time use Amazon Pharmacy We deliver and no those were not raisins Amazon Pharmacy Healthcare just got less painful
Starting point is 00:08:59 Mike Slater filling up for Bill O'Reilly Now it's time for something you might not know Do you know what John Adams wanted the seal of America to be He was talking to a friend the other day about virtue And he said human nature takes the easiest path. It's hard to call someone or even yourself to something higher when you don't really need to. It's hard to convince someone that a real woman is better than fake women online or building
Starting point is 00:09:26 something with your hands as better than video games or working out is better than sleeping in. Human nature defaults to what's easiest. Turns out John Adams wrote about this to Samuel Adams, his second cousin in a letter in 1790. He was quoting Samuel, who said, the love of liberty, you say, is interwoven in the soul of man. Adams disagreed. Adams talked about the fable of the wolf, who prefers to run in the forest lean and hungry over the plump and round domesticated dog.
Starting point is 00:09:59 Adam said that the wolf had more love of liberty than most men. Adam said, the men in all ages preferred ease, slumber, and good cheer over liberty. We must not, then, depend alone upon the love of liberty and the soul of man for its preservation. Some political institutions must be prepared to assist this love against its enemies. His point is that people don't really love liberty, because liberty is difficult, and human nature is to take the easy path. And then the tyrant comes in and says, support me, I'll make your life even easier, as he always then takes away more of your liberty and then more of our virtue, which makes us easier to domesticate, like that point. plump and round dog. But we need to love liberty and we need to love the work that comes with it because the result is virtue and that is the point of it all. If we want to make America great
Starting point is 00:10:50 again, we have to lead a movement of knowing that the right path is almost always the hard path. But John Adams knew this. John Adams wanted the seal of America to be Hercules. There was a moment in Hercules life when he was confronted by two women. One was the goddess of pleasure and the other was the goddess of virtue. And the goddess of pleasure offered Hercules, a life where all of his dreams would come true. And the goddess of virtue pointed to a tall mountain and said, if you take this path, it'll be difficult. But it will lead to true joy, wisdom, and greatness. That's what John Adams wanted the seal of America to be. Hercules choosing the difficult path. And that's what we need to do today. Because we need to do more than just win an election if we really want.
