Bill O'Reilly here. Tuesday, July 30th, 2019. You are listening to the O'Reilly Update. Here is what
is happening across our nation. Democrats taking the stage for the second presidential debate in
Detroit tonight. Kamala Harris revising her Medicare for All proposal. The federal government
said to borrow more than $1 trillion this year to pay its debt. An NFL star plans to
continue his anthem protest into this season. A British teenager wins a million bucks at a popular
video game contest in New York City. Also coming up my message of the day, what is behind the racial
feuding? But first, 20 Democratic presidential hopefuls will take the stage in Detroit this week
with Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders facing off for the first time this evening.
night one may be a battle between those two who are vying for the same votes.
Former Vice President Joe Biden, the frontrunner, will appear on the second night alongside
Kamala Harris. Senator Harris walking back her previous pledge to ban private health insurance
across the USA. Now, she says that Americans should be allowed to keep their previous health
plans if they want to. Bernie Sanders' campaign mocking that proposal saying,
call it whatever you want, but you can't call it Medicare for all. Borrowing by the federal government
set to break the $1 trillion mark this financial year. Treasury Department confirming the feds
expect to borrow $814 billion just for the second half of the fiscal calendar. Believe it or not,
that's actually down from 2018. Soon the federal debt will erupt into a major story for this
nation. Carolina Panthers star Eric Reid telling reporters he'll continue to kneel during the
national anthem in the upcoming NFL season. He says he'll stop the protests when racial justice
issues in America have been addressed. Also, Beto O'Rourke has invited three high school football
players who knelt to attend the debate tonight. British teenager winning big bucks at a video
game contest in Queens, New York, earning more than a million dollars after taking second place
at the popular fortnight world championship event.
Fifteen-year-old Jaden Ashman telling reporters he plans to buy his mom a house
and a pair of Gucci shoes with his winnings.
Sounds like a good kid.
Up next, the real story behind all the racial feuding.
We'll be right back with it.

behind the feud between President Trump and Congressman Elijah Cummings and other racial
feuds. President Trump knows that Mr. Cummings and other Democrats are trying to destroy his
presidency. There is no question they are trying to do that in a variety of ways. The Russian
inclusion, investigation, impeachment, and smearing the president at every turn.
Now, I spoke with Mr. Trump about the attacks on him while putting together my upcoming
book, The United States of Trump, which will be out in September.
The president's point of view is that he is not going to be a pinata.
He is not going to allow people to criticize him without coming back at them.
I pointed out that a factual rebuttal might help the president more.
He almost laughed at me.
He said, nobody would listen to that.
You have to go after the people personally to get the public's attention.
Thus, when criticized and when threatened, President Trump does exactly that.
Elijah Cummings' point of view is that Mr. Trump is the worst president in history.
he does not deserve to be in the office, and the congressman is going to do everything he can
to besmirch Mr. Trump and try to get him out of office, or at least to lose the upcoming election.
So the battle lines are drawn. Elijah Cummings goes down to the border,
criticizes Donald Trump saying that he actually wants the migrants to suffer,
and that Americans should be outraged.
Donald Trump replies that in Mr. Cummings' district in Baltimore, you have abject poverty,
you have people who are addicted to narcotics, you have unbelievable violence, and the congressman
has done nothing for 24 years about it. That's the feud. But it really isn't, because behind this
is the Democrats and far left basically demonizing anyone, anyone who,
who criticizes a person of color or a woman. That is an inhibitor on free speech. For his part,
President Trump is not going to moderate his personal attacks. He's not going to do it.
You can appeal to him on a variety of levels, but he believes he was elected by devastating his
Republican opposition in very personal ways. So, there isn't going to be
any change, the racial feuding will continue until the election. Now, this is not good for the American
people. President Trump and Congressman Cummings should not be going after each other in personal
ways. Should not be using the race card. And that's mostly, to be honest, on Mr. Cummings' side.
President Trump did not mention Elijah Cummings' race or anything about it. He just went after him
as an ineffective congressman.
But the other side is clearly calling
a president of the United States a racist,
comparing him to Andrew Johnson,
trying to send a signal
to people of color
that Donald Trump hates them.
That is absolutely
bad for the USA.
They may think that's true,
but when you read my book,
you'll see a whole different side
to the way Mr. Trump approaches
the minority precincts.

Now the O'Reilly Update brings you something you might not know. Public trust in the mainstream media
at an all-time low, according to recent polling, and with good reason. It's becoming obvious to most
Americans that the news media, at least most of it, no longer interested in finding the truth,
choosing instead to push a political agenda. For many outlets, the shift from facts to ideology
has had a profound effect on their bottom line. Pew Research Center reports on the state of
the mainstream news media. Their findings spell bad news for American newsrooms. In 2018,
the biggest losers by far were newspapers. According to Pew, total circulation
for daily weekday papers dropped 8%. Circulation now at the lowest level since 1940,
the first year the data is available. As a result of the fall in circulation,
newspapers are also selling fewer ads. According to an analysis of security and exchange
commission filings, ad revenue dropped by 13% in 2018. That includes both print and digital
platforms. For cable news, the situation is different. Driven by constant coverage,
of President Trump, the three news agencies, are indeed losing viewers but not add revenue.
CNN has lost the most eyeballs, MSNBC down as well, Fox News losing younger Americans.
Of course, ratings were buoyed by breathless coverage of the Russian collusion story.
Donald Trump has said once he leaves the political stage, cable news will simply collapse.
Local TV news is in a steady decline.
According to the Pew Report, the average audience fell dramatically in key time slots last year,
morning news down 10%, evening and late night news dropping 14%.
Despite the fall in viewership, ad revenue for local news did increase, but just a little.
It remains to be seen if the cash flow will be enough to save local news,
which has been in a ratings free fall, since 2007.
due in large part to the abundance of competition on the net. With the decline in trust of the mainstream
media, Americans are clearly turning to alternative outlets to get their news. Unless the news media
dramatically alters their current strategy, which is not likely, consumers may simply abandon
the industry altogether. All in all, the media in America, not a growth industry. In fact,
it's in serious trouble. We'll be right back.
