Starting point is 00:00:00 Bill O'Reilly here. You are listening to the O'Reilly update. Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater. Thank you, Bill. It is Tuesday, July 8th, 2025. Here's what's happening today in America. Border Patrol ambush, ICE in L.A., terrorists tomorrow, and TPS no longer. It's all coming up, and Bill's going to be here with your message today. The suspect has been killed who tried to kill Border Patrol agents in McAllen, Texas. Two Border Patrol employees were injured, including one officer who was shot in the knee. The 27-year-old has a Michigan address and arrived in a car
Starting point is 00:00:35 with Michigan tags. His car had additional weapons and ammunition inside. Worth noting that just yesterday, Axios reported with their headline, Democrats told to, quote, get shot for the anti-Trump resistance. The grassroots want more. Some of them have suggested what we really need to do is be willing to get shot when visiting ICE facilities or federal agencies, a House Democrat told Axios. Our own base is telling us that what we're doing is not good enough, that there needs to be blood to grab the attention of the press and the public. There was a large ice operation in MacArthur Park in Los Angeles yesterday. The Department of Defense said that 90 armed military personnel were on the ground to protect the federal ICE agents. Defense officials
Starting point is 00:01:18 had said the troops were deployed to set up a security perimeter to protect federal law enforcement officials against potentially hostile crowds. All of the troops involved in the operation were activated members of the California National Guard. The operation included 17 Humvees, four military cargo trucks, and two military ambulances. The armed troops were told in advance of the raid that they could defend themselves and federal employees if needed. If a person was a threat, the troops could detain the individual briefly before handing them to law enforcement. Earlier this summer, Trump deployed 4,700 troops to California under a law known as Title 10, which allows the use of military forces to protect federal
Starting point is 00:01:55 personnel and federal property. The president has announced new tariffs up to 40% on a bunch of countries. These reciprocal tariffs were expected to go into effect Wednesday. The Prime Minister of Japan and President of South Korea were the first recipients of Trump's letters announcing the new tariffs, 25% for both those countries. About two hours later, Trump released a letter sent to Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Myanmar, and Laos informing their leaders of new tariffs as high as 40%. Later in the day, letters to Tunisia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Serbia, Cambodia, and Thailand.
Starting point is 00:02:30 Time is running out for countries to make a deal. Department of Homeland Security has ended the temporary protected status quasi-amnesty program for more than 75,000 people from Honduras and Nicaragua. TPS was first granted to people from Nicaragua after a hurricane in 1999 and from Honduras after hurricane in 1998. Noam said it's clear that the government of Honduras has taken all the necessary steps to overcome the impacts of Hurricane Mitch almost 27 years ago. I'm Mike Slater.

On this Tuesday, welcome to the American Party. Elon Musk is backing a third political organization in the USA, and he has a cash to do it. The new party is decidedly all about money, cutting back the massive spending coming out of Washington. Musk is correct when he says politicians use tax dollars to amass power. Just look at Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, who voted for the big bill only because the Republicans earmarked big cash for her constituents. That stuff happens all the time. They call it back room deals.
Starting point is 00:04:21 Elon Musk hates that and believes he can reform the decades-old system by energizing a new political movement. The trouble is he will not succeed. The reason is easy. Most voters want and many actually need financial help from the feds. Some of that's fair. Taxpayers funds Social Security and Medicare, so it's only right, the contract remains in place. Medicaid, however, is essentially a charity, but most voters are okay with the
Starting point is 00:04:56 safety net. So where exactly is Elon going? Yes, optional spending should be a reform target, but almost every Democrat opposes that. Republicans generally support more responsible spending, but as we see with Red State Alaska, they'll take the money. It is very expensive to live in America. Taxes are everywhere on everything. Many citizens reach retirement facing acute budget problems. Most don't want to lose what financial protection they have. And Elon Musk is not going to change that. I'm Bill O'Reilly. I approve the message by writing it.

Starting point is 00:06:09 bill a pass today to defund NPR PBS no Trump did that by himself executive order and Congress will probably challenge it but he'll lose and that money is done. Good. Good. Under Biden, $2 billion in four years more than that went to NPR, PBS for propaganda. I like the antique show. I like the four tops. But once they get into the public service, progressive all the way. Sharon Goodberry, Tucson, Arizona. I wish you would
Starting point is 00:06:48 explain why tax on tips and overtime is a good thing. Because it helps people that don't have a lot of money sharing service people. My son is a waiter this summer. Okay, you know how much more money he's going to take when he sorts grad school in September? Because they're not tax and tips. You have any idea how this helps him? Now, I'm picking up the tab for the school, but he's got to pay day to days. This is a big windfall for students or people trying to work, you know, work themselves up economically, beginning people in the workplace. Come on. Let's be smart about it. William, here's an idea of politicians that only receive donations from people in their own constituencies. Supreme Court never permitted. It comes under the First Amendment. They already
Starting point is 00:07:39 rule that. In a moment, something you might not know. Hey, I'm Caitlin Becker, the host of the New York Postcast, and I've got exactly what you need to start your weekdays. Starting point is 00:08:21 30 years ago today, when America's favorite rock groups perform for the last time. One month later, its founding member, Jerry Garcia, died from a heart attack. Here is the story of the Grateful Dead. Born in 1942, San Francisco, Garcia began his musical career as a street performer. He then formed the dead in 1965. From the beginning, the band became a defining part of America's counterculture. They went on to play the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, Woodstock, 1969. Throughout the 70s and 80s, Jerry Garcia and his crew gained fame for their grueling schedule.
Starting point is 00:09:05 Each year, the Dead performed 200 live shows across the country. Their fans, known as Deadheads, attended the sold-out concerts with colorful shirts, torn jeans, copious amounts of pot. On July 8, 1995, the Grateful Dead played before a packed crowd at Chicago Soldier Field. No one knew it would be their final performance. From the land of the midnight sun by the ice-blue rose and gold. Long those roads of gold and silver stone. Howling wide a morning load, so many roads I know. So many roads ease my soul.
Starting point is 00:10:03 Exactly one month later, Jerry Garcia died while seeking treatment at a drug rehab center in California. Doctor said the cause of death was a heart attack from diabetes and high blood pressure. Garcia was just 53 years old. And here's something else you might not know. Garcia's band settled on his current name after rejecting Jerry's first choice. The singer came up with the group's initial title after Innsia. ingesting LSD. What we know today as a Grateful Dead, we're almost called the mythical, ethical, icicle, tricycle.
