Starting point is 00:00:00 Bill O'Reilly here. You are listening to the O'Reilly Update. Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater. Thank you, Bill. It is Monday, March 27th, 2023. Here's what's happening today in America. Trump in Waco, Hurricanes in the South, a Biden nominee withdraws, and paying with the wave of your hand. That's all coming up. And then Bill will be here with the message today. First, Trump gave his first official 2024 rally in Waco, Texas on Saturday. He said the New York City DA Bragg, quote, is investigating me for
Starting point is 00:00:35 something that is not a crime, not a misdemeanor, not an affair. This is really prosecutorial misconduct. The innocence of people makes no difference to these radical left maniacs. And people see it's bullshit and they go and they say it's unfair.
Starting point is 00:00:54 Bill Maher said this weekend, I would just like to go on the record saying I think this is a colossal mistake if they'd bring these charges, it's not going to work. It's going to be rocket fuel for his 2024 campaign. That terrible tornado in the south, particularly in Mississippi, an EF4, top wind gusts, up to 200 miles per hour, killed at least 25 people, injured dozens,
Starting point is 00:01:17 more destroyed entire blocks. The damage was so bad that storm chasers stopped their filming, stopped their chasing, and were begging anyone who was nearby to help. And they started driving people to the hospital, but the hospital itself was damaged by the tornado. A firefighter touring the damage said it looked like a bomb went off. Joe Biden nominated Phil Washington to head the Federal Aviation Administration,
Starting point is 00:01:44 but he withdrew his name after Republicans and a few Democrats, had concerns that he had no experience with aviation safety ever. He was the CEO of the Denver International Airports. He was like, okay, and the former CEO of the L.A. Metro Transit Authority. But couldn't get his vote out of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. Ted Cruz says we don't need someone with on-the-job training. The White House came back and said, unfortunately, an onslaught, an onslaught of unfounded Republican attacks on Mr. Washington's service and experience irresponsibly delayed this process. Panera Bread is now the biggest company to integrate Amazon 1 into their stores.
Starting point is 00:02:26 What is Amazon 1, you ask? It is biometric palm scanning to pay. So you order your food, and instead of the laborious process of taking out your credit card or double-clicking the side of your phone, it takes forever. Now you just wave your hand and the machine reads your palm. Would you do this? Do you ever see yourself paying for food with your palm? I'm Mike Slater of Bill O'Reilly with your message of the day.

Starting point is 00:03:38 Have you ever thought about this? So first, let me define the situation. Everybody living in the USA is subject to criticism. That comes under freedom of speech. So people can be critical and say things to you that, you don't really want to hear. However, some of the things under the criticism banner are true, and we can improve if we think about it. Ridicule is another matter. When someone ridicules you, they are attacking your entire personage. That's what shock jocks do, and they make a lot of
Starting point is 00:04:22 money doing it. Ridiculing someone is pretty much the end of the relationship. because the someone getting ridiculed is not going to forget that you did it. Yes, you could apologize, you make friends, all of that, but say you're in a marriage and you're ridiculing your spouse, believe me when I tell you, that is not going away. So constructive criticism, okay, it's necessary sometimes. But if you ridicule someone, you are going. going to turn that person against you. Stay on the issue. Do not attack people where they live.
Starting point is 00:05:10 Do not ridicule. It will destroy the relationship. Believe me. I'm Bill O'Reilly. I approve the message by writing it. You can reach me. Bill at Bill O'Reilly.com, Bill at Bill O'Reilly.com, name in town if you wish to opine. Now let's go to the mail. Donna, I would like our next president to be strong, intelligent, non-polarizing,
Starting point is 00:05:38 and have the personality to bring the country together. I don't know if Jesus is coming back to run. You know? I don't know if we have anybody could bring the country back together. Jesus could do it. Carol, what horrifies me most about Joe Biden is not solving America's problems is they
Starting point is 00:05:59 hasn't had the cabinet meeting in months. He may hold these meetings and we don't know. So that's possible. But certainly the guys, as I've documented, if you read the message of the day, I mean, it's on billowrilly.com, it just says, tells you all you need to know about Joe Biden and his efficiency. David Langston, Paducah, Kentucky. Mr. O'Reilly, you stated that if Donald Trump is indicted that the Republicans will come after Joe Biden. I would hope that if James Comer had solid evidence against Biden for corruption, he would bring it no matter what. But that's not what I said. I said it's on steroids now. Yeah, they were always investigating the Biden family, always. As soon as the Republicans got in, they started that in January. But now they're
Starting point is 00:06:44 starting with a vengeance and the leaks are going to, you watch. That was the point. Donald Callahan, Traverse City, Michigan. Whatever happened to John Durham. Hey, he's still making money off us? He's still making money off us, Donald. Still there? I don't know what he's doing. What a disappointment, huh? If you don't have anything, resign.
Starting point is 00:07:07 Okay, John, Durham, don't keep taking my money. Live in large for, what, five years now? All expenses paid, you get a nice salary? For what? If you don't have it, say you don't. have it. In a moment, something you might not know. Now, the O'Reilly Update brings you something you might not know. 157 years ago today, President Andrew Johnson vetoed a civil rights bill that would have granted equal protection to freed slaves. The act would eventually be enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Here is the story.
Starting point is 00:08:22 the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Johnson ascended to the presidency. Lincoln had selected the governor of Tennessee as vice president because his present might appease the South. Once in office, Johnson fought constantly with the Republican majority over the federal government's role in promoting equality for former slaves. Johnson did not want that. In 1816, In 66, the House and Senate passed the Civil Rights Act. The bill stated, quote, all persons within the jurisdiction of the United States shall have the same right in every state and territory as is enjoyed by white citizens. On March 27, Johnson refused to sign that legislation.
Starting point is 00:09:12 The President argued the federal government had no right to guarantee freedom within the southern states. passed the bill a second time. Again, Johnson vetoed, but a two-thirds majority in the House and Senate overrode his decision. The language of the Civil Rights Act was soon enshrined in the 14th Amendment. Now, the remainder of Johnson's presidency was a total disaster. He was despied by Northern Republicans for his racist views and by some Southern Democrats for his his affiliation with Abe Lincoln. He was also, Johnson was, a notorious alcoholic. He was impeached by Congress in 1868 for high crimes and misdemeanors for illegally removing members of his own
Starting point is 00:10:04 cabinet, but he was acquitted by one vote in the Senate. And here's something else you might not know. Johnson's drinking was so bad. He delivered the keynote speech at Lincoln's second inaugural while stone cold drunk. Things got so bad, bystanders had to remove Andrew Johnson after he nearly collapsed while swearing in new senators. Wrote one member of Congress, quote, The inauguration went very well, except the vice president-elect was too drunk to perform his duties, unquote. Right back. power, politics and the people behind the headlines. I'm Miranda Devine, New York Post columnist and the host of the brand new podcast, Podforce One.
