Time now for the O'Reilly Update message of the day, a personal look at the pandemic.
The vicious contagion presents perhaps the most significant opportunity for change in our
lifetimes.
That's because the bustle has broken down, the pursuit of money, sex, power, and other magnets,
all on hold.
We are now apart from the daily machine that can grind us into unthinking callous.
people, at least most of us are apart. So how about some introspection, some inward evaluation,
an honest appraisal of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? Maybe we start with the
country, and then we'll get to what's really important, our own selves, as the country
singers might say. An essential question for me is, how did America get so hateful?
If you're following the contagion news, you know the blame game is kicked in. It's
the Trump virus, according to a writer in the New York Times. Also in that liberal journal,
another writer says the bug is enabled by ultra-religious Christians who, quote, deny science.
Of course, he ties it into climate change. On the right, some loons have accused China of
weaponizing the contagion without a shred of evidence to back that up. Yes, China is responsible
for faulty reporting of the Wuhan virus. But they did not weaponize it. With so much craziness
available on the net, often disseminated by corporate media, the divisive atmosphere is fueled
a unique kind of American loathing. Many of us actively despise those with whom we disagree.
Thus, in our newfound downtime, we might think about whether we are a part of the loathing movement
and if we are, whether that is enhancing our lives.
And then there is the what your country can do for you philosophy.
President Kennedy rejected that, but sentiment today says that millions of Americans
firmly believe in the Bernie Sanders doctrine that the government should provide.
No need for self-reliance.
fools. A vast central power structure will dictate what Americans cannot have. We the people will
not be the deciders. Bernie and his comrades will be. It is simply incredible to me, a son of
the Cold War, that socialism is on the rise in America. Perhaps during the contagion we can think
hard about our individual freedoms which are under assault from the virus. Do you like being told
how to live and where you can go? How about you, Democratic Party? Are you embracing the restrictions
we are facing? They are obviously necessary, but they're also a vivid message. This is what can happen
all the time when big government rules. Finally, what about your life? Do you fear the virus? Why? Are you
afraid to die? Are you afraid of giving the contagion to people you love? Are strangers, part of?
of that equation? Do you feel for the suffering and dying? Do you pray for them? Do you pray at all?
People who see themselves as victims and who lament the temporary loss of individual pursuits
will stay in place. But others who think about life and how to live it will prosper in the
aftermath of the contagion. I'm Bill O'Reilly and I approve that message by actually writing it
for the absolute best coverage of the contagion. Please visit Bill O'Reilly.com.

The CDC recently issued new travel advisories for New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut,
an attempt to slow the spread of the virus. The proposal might sound a bit harsh, but communities throughout
America have the right to institute policies to protect the locals. So here's what's going
on. Rhode Island issued a statewide warning on the dangers of New Yorkers. Police and National
Guard actually stopped vehicles with New York plates demanding those travelers turn around and get
out. If you are a New Yorker or a New Jerseyite in Rhode Island, you're quarantined for 14.
days. But that order was so controversial, it was rescinded after New York Governor Cuomo bitterly
complained publicly. Some towns down in Mississippi are banning gatherings of more than five people,
even families. Police can disband groups, including birthday parties, graduations, even funerals,
to protect public health. Folks in San Francisco still under a quote, shelter and place order
from the mayor there. Those living in the Bay Area can only leave their homes for food and medical
supplies. Officials say taking a walk for exercise is okay, but only once a day. Very little
enforcement, however, going on there. Authorities in the Florida, keys put up checkpoints
at roads to keep the tourists out, also at the docks and the airport. Officials in Monroe County say folks
fleeing the contagion will only accelerate the illness so no one other than residents is allowed
into the Florida Keys. And here's something you might not know. All these public safety measures
may be helpful in stopping the disease, but the policies could be considered unconstitutional.
The First Amendment says, quote, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion
or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or bridging the freedom of speech or of the press,
or the right of the people peaceably to assemble.
The assemble thing?
Very interesting.
But public health legally trumps legal orders.
We'll be right back.
