Starting point is 00:00:33 Bill O'Reilly here. You are listening to the O'Reilly update. Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater. Thank you, Bill. It is Wednesday, May 13th, 2020. Here's this happening today in America. Trump to China. China to California. Chat GPT sued and blame for the boat crash. That's all coming up. Then Bill's going to be here with your message of the day. But first, the president headed to China, Thursday, and Friday to meet with President Xi.
Starting point is 00:00:58 Iran, of course, will be a major topic. China wants the straight of Hormuz open. and they get a ton of oil from Iran, we don't. The president said he's been somebody that we get along with, and I think you're going to see that good things are going to happen. This is going to be a very exciting trip. A lot of good things are going to happen. He then said, I don't think we need any help with Iran,
Starting point is 00:01:15 and we'll win it one way or the other. In other China news, the former mayor of Arcadia, California, which is just part of L.A. is expected to plead guilty after being charged with acting as an illegal agent of the People's Republic of China. Eileen Wang and Yao Ning Sun worked at the direction of the People's Republic of China and operated U.S. News Center, a website that catered to the Chinese community in America. The Department of Justice said these two receive directives from Chinese officials to post content favorable to the Chinese government and to spread propaganda on behalf of the People's Republic of China. The co-conspirator is serving a four-year federal sentence.
Starting point is 00:01:57 she is eligible to serve up to 10 years. The family of a victim killed last April at a mass shooting at Florida State University has filed a federal lawsuit against OpenAI. They're the owners of ChatGPT, saying that the chatbot enabled the deadly attack. ChatGPT allegedly told the killer that it would be more likely for his shooting to gain national attention if children were involved and noted that two or three victims draws even more attention. In other ChatGPT news, a Texas couple whose 19-year-old
Starting point is 00:02:27 son died of an overdose last year, is also suing ChatGPT because their son used it to get information about the drugs he used. Their lawsuit claims that ChatGPT is not qualified to dispense medical advice. Specifically, ChatGPT advised their son that it was safe to take Kratum in combination with Xanax. The lawsuit claims that ChatGPT is capable of stopping a conversation if it's programmed to, but instead it continued to advise self-harm. The Department of Justice has charged a Singapore company for failing to maintain proper technical systems which caused it to crash into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. Those lapses include the chronic use of improper fuel pumps. The DOJ said their technical supervisor, Rod Kachrishna Karkiknayer, falsified safety inspection records and lied to investigators after the crash.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Two years later, the bridge is still not expected to be rebuilt until 2030. I'm Mike Slater for the podcast, Politics by Faith. Bill O'Reilly has your message of the day. But President Trump's visit to China this week certainly is.
Starting point is 00:04:16 First, the Chinese could help end the Iran conflict because it buys so much oil from the mullers. If the communists purchase elsewhere, like the USA, Iran's economy gets hammered. But in order for Beijing to cooperate with America, it will want the Trump administration to stop protecting Taiwan. If the USA did that, the world would perceive America as weak. Then there's AI.
Starting point is 00:04:51 China's been stealing U.S. technology and doesn't really care whether we like it or not. So how do you stop that? Very difficult. Now, you may remember I traveled at Beijing a year ago for a sit-down with high-ranking communists. The world is a much more chaotic place now than it was then. So this week, there are very high stakes in play. All loyal Americans should be hoping the talks succeed, that they go our way. But we remain a very divided nation.
Starting point is 00:05:34 And many citizens would rather see Donald Trump fail than succeed in the negotiations. I'm Bill O'Reilly. I approve the message by writing it. You can reach me. Bill at Bill O'Reilly.com. Bill at Bill O'Reilly.com. Name in town if you wish to opine. Now let's go to the mail. Joe C. Riverhead, New York. I agree with you, O'Reilly, about the oil companies are making profits. It's inexcusable. There's no reason other than greed to capitalize on a vulnerable situation. Shame on them. I do not understand if we have neutralized Iran's military capacity, why is the U.S. not opening the Strait of Hormuz with Navy escorts? We are. We are.
Starting point is 00:06:20 We escort ships through there every day. But the Iranians are over on the banks. on the sides of the straight, lobbing, you know, drones and things like that. Insurance companies aren't insuring the other ships. So that's a little complicated. But we're there and we control it with our military power. M.G. Concierge member, Bill, I concur with your statement that fuel prices in the USA should be addressed by President Trump.
Starting point is 00:06:51 A free market guy also recognized that when dealing with oligar, it is necessary for the government to regulate them. So you and Teddy Roosevelt are on the same page. Okay, it can get out of control. BP making a hundred percent profit in one quarter is out of control. I think I'm the only one reporting this. I don't think does anybody else report it. Alan, the U.S. is no possibility of defending Taiwan.
Starting point is 00:07:25 defending Taiwan. Just look at the location. It's a few miles away from mainland China, half a world away from America, China will take it one way or another whenever it wants. If China does that, it'll be an economic boycott all over that country. They have to do it legally. They can't do it militarily. Plus, the Taiwanese will fight. They'll fight. And they are well armed, not like the Ukrainians. So it's not just walking on in there. In a moment, something you might not know. Every major story has a version the news gives you and then a version that's actually true.
Starting point is 00:08:12 If you're a critical thinker, if you're somebody who's not tribal, if you're somebody who just wants the facts so you can make your own decisions, keeping it real with Jillian Michaels is the show for you. Now the O'Reilly update brings you something you might not know. 32 years ago today, Johnny Carson returned to late night TV just two years after his retirement. It would be the comedian's final appearance on television. Here is the story.
Starting point is 00:08:46 After doing a series of quiz shows and comedy routines with sidekick Ed McMahon, Carson was tasked by NBC to create an evening program as a counterpart to its popular morning broadcasts, The Today Show. He sat behind Letterman for a few moments, then left the stage without saying one single word.
Starting point is 00:09:48 Johnny, can I have the top ten list? Carson later explained he was suffering. from laryngitis but refused to cancel his letterman appearance. His second 90-second cameo on the late show would be his last one. The comedian then retired from public life. In 1999, he suffered a severe heart attack at the age of 74.
