Starting point is 00:00:00 Bill O'Reilly here. It is Thursday, May 16th, 2019. You are listening to the O'Reilly update, and here's what's happening today in America. The Attorney General meets Nancy Pelosi at the U.S. Capitol. Alabama's strict abortion law likely heading to the Supreme Court. Lindsay Graham, introducing new immigration legislation. California's governor pardons foreign national felons to show. shield them from deportation. Federal spending sets a new record for the first seven months of fiscal 2019. Also coming up my message of the day on your money. But first, politics. Attorney General Barr met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi face-to-face Wednesday during an event at the U.S. Capitol,
Starting point is 00:00:49 perhaps asking the Speaker of the House if she, quote, brought her handcuffs. Now, Pelosi accused Barr of committing a major crime just days ago when he refused to meet with Democrats to further discuss Robert Mueller's final report. I say perhaps because, as usual, the report about Barr and Pelosi is based on anonymous sources. Always be careful. Alabama Governor K. I.V. signing her state's latest anti-abortion legislation into law Wednesday night. The new bill bans nearly all abortions, including cases of rape and incest, only allowing the operation if the mother's life is in serious jeopardy. The bill will likely make its way to the Supreme Court the biggest challenge to Roe v. Wade in decades. To the border, as Senator Lindsey Graham unveils new legislation
Starting point is 00:01:40 that would stop all asylum applications at the U.S. Mexican border, requiring refugees to apply at U.S. Councilists throughout Central America. One item notably absent from the bill, President Trump's border wall. California's far-left governor taking a totally different approach to the region's immigration crisis. Gavin Newsom now pardoning felons to shield them from deportation. Newsom pardoned at least two asylum seekers this week, one with a prior arrest for conspiring to commit murder back in 2000.
Starting point is 00:02:18 The federal government set another financial record in recent weeks, spending more than $2.5 trillion in the first seven months of fiscal 2019. The new stats show the U.S. budget deficit increasing by 38% since the start of the fiscal year last October. Is America heading for a financial crisis? Coming up by message of the day on your money. But first, if you watch 60 Minutes and you own a home, you just got very nervous. The FBI's former head of cybercrimes has warned home owners that foreign and domestic thieves can steal your home and do it all online. That's because home titles and mortgages are kept
Starting point is 00:03:06 in databases that can be hacked. If you have equity in your home, here's how they get you. They simply forge your name onto your home's title, use your home as collateral to borrow cash, you with the payments, and no bank or identity theft program protects you. So you need home title lock, America's leading title and mortgage guardian. For pennies a day, home title lock puts a barrier around your home's title and mortgage. If cyber thieves tamper with it, we mobilize to help shut it down. You may already be a victim. Here's how to find out. Starting point is 00:04:00 Now to the O'Reilly Update message of the day, a variety of economic statistics pinpoint the following. 78% of all Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. That term paycheck to paycheck means that missing just one payment from your employer means you will be unable to pay housing and or food costs. Women are impacted more than men 81% to 75%. And it's not just America's poor. 10% of Americans earning more than $100,000 per year are also living. paycheck to paycheck. More than 50% of Americans say they save less than $100 a month. 70% are also in debt, and 44% of households say they cannot afford to pay a $400 emergency bill if they had to. Now, why is this happening? One huge reason. Money makes you.
Starting point is 00:05:07 and keeping it is a discipline. It is not taught in school. American children do not learn the basics of finance and money. That is an amazing dereliction of education. Therefore, people think that money is something to spend rather than something to be acquired for your protection. That's what money is. The more money you have, the more you can be protected from the horrors of life. If you have money to buy a nice house with a big security system, you're more protected. If you don't have any money and you have to live in a questionable neighborhood where there's a high crime rate and people are doing things that might hurt you while you're in jeopardy. Also, greed is not good. Discipline is good. So buying whatever you want whenever you want
Starting point is 00:06:15 is foolish. The other thing not good when it comes to money is emotion. Do not buy things emotionally. If there's something you want to purchase, think about it. Research it. You might be able to get it at a far lower price. Do not snap that wallet or purse open, slap the money down on the counter without thought. Also, every American can improve your economic circumstance. Now, that takes, again, discipline and hard work. You may have to go back to school. It's never too late to take classes at night, to take them on the net, to improve your circumstance, to further hone a skill. If there's something that you can do well, you can make money from it. And that brings me to my last point. It used to be Americans bartered things. So I will fix your
Starting point is 00:07:15 faucet if you do something for me. The barter economy is very effective. And if you can do something that other people need done, you can parlay that into some economic advantage. So again, most Americans don't have any money. They're not saving any money, and that will put you in peril. More commentary on Bill O'Reilly.com. You'll like it. I hope you check it out. In a moment, something you might not know. Many financial experts believe we are in a hidden recession. And make no mistake, they're worried. Some of these experts work for the largest banks in the country, names you'd surely recognize. It's important to think about ways to protect your family and your finances from what could be another financial crisis.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Many Americans are turning to physical gold and silver to protect their retirement accounts and life savings, and a relatively new law allows you to own physical gold and silver as part of your IRA. Now, to get you started, the Hartford Gold Group is giving a free silver coin to all of my radio listeners. With all the talk lately about a constitutional crisis, it's easy to forget that our nation
Starting point is 00:09:10 has faced turbulent times throughout its history. Obviously examples include the Civil War, the Great Depression, World War II. But one of the greatest challenges to the American way of life came on this day, May 16th, 1918, when the United States Sedition Act went into effect. The bill was passed by both houses of Congress in response to the Great War sweeping Europe. The law actually made it illegal for citizens to criticize their government in certain ways. Now, the legislation banned the use of disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abuse of law. language about the United States, the American flag, the military, or anything related to U.S. institutions. Those caught violating sedition would face five to 20 years in prison just
Starting point is 00:10:04 for speaking out against their leaders. The law went so far as to allow the U.S. Postmaster General to search letters exchange between Americans to determine if the correspondence contained punishable speech. In practice, the bill was used to crack down on socialists and labor unions across the USA. The Supreme Court would go on to uphold the Sedition Act in 1919 before Congress moved to repeal the law after the end of World War I. Historians debate whether the Sedition Act was a clear violation of the People's First Amendment rights. This historian says, it absolutely was. There is an important lesson to me learned from all this. When you turn on the television or social media and see breathless coverage predicting the end of our democracy,
Starting point is 00:11:03 the rise of fascism in America, or worse? Remember, the USA has stared down many challenges throughout our history, including an act of Congress that actually outlawed criticism of the government. With everything going on, these days, in the media, there certainly isn't any shortage of that. Back after this.
