Thank you, Bill.
It's Friday, May 17, 2024.
Here's what's happening today in America.
executive privilege sergeant pardoned teacher vindicated and hotel closed that's all coming up then bill's
going to be here with your message of the day of the first remember a couple months ago the justice
department robert her said we're not going to charge biden with any crimes related to his mishandling
of classified documents because he would quote present himself to a jury as a sympathetic well-meaning
elderly man with a poor memory what in the world did biden say in that interview and how did he say it that
led the Justice Department to come to such a conclusion while House Republicans demanded the
video and the Justice Department said no, we're not going to hand it over because of executive
privilege. The House Judiciary Committee voted 18 to 15 to approve a report recommending that
Merrick Garland head of the Department of Justice be held in contempt of Congress. The governor of
Texas pardoned Daniel Perry, 35 year old U.S. Army Sergeant, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison
for murder. He was convicted of killing a Black Lives Matter protester who approached his car,
armed with an AK-47. Perry said that he acted in self-defense and immediately called 911 to turn himself
into law enforcement. Abbott says Texas has one of the strongest stand-your-ground laws of self-defense
that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive district attorney. The lead detective of the case
said that the DA, who was backed by George Soros, acted with, quote, criminal behavior. A teacher
in Riverside County, Southern California was fired last year for refusing to call a transgender student
by their proper pronouns.
She was the gym teacher
and claimed that her firing
violated her freedom of speech
and religious rights.
She refused to use the students' pronouns
to allow them to use the other locker room
and refuse to withhold information
from parents about the child's gender identity.
Well, the school district says,
fine, we will not admit to wrongdoing,
but here's $285,000
and we'll pay $75,000 of your attorney's fees.
Love it. Way to fight back.
The Mirage in Las Vegas is closing.
It's been open for 34 years since 1988.
It's been the home of Sigfried and Roy's White Tiger Show
and the Beatles Cirque to Salee show.
It's going to be replaced with the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino
and Guitar Hotel Las Vegas.
It's a 700-foot guitar-shaped hotel.
The Tropicana shut down last April as well,
almost 67 years.
That's going to be replaced by a $1.5 billion baseball stadium
for the Oakland days.
I'm Mike Slater.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Time now for the O'Reilly Update, message of the day. On this Friday, remember the name Jody Powell?
At 33, he was appointed President Jimmy Carter's press secretary. Mr. Powell died young at 65 from a heart attack,
and his White House employment certainly was not a physiological boost to him.
Obviously, the late 1970s were a much different time than now,
but the economic problems President Biden has are very similar to Jimmy Carter.
Simply put, working class Americans are getting hammered with the high cost of just about everything.
Biden's press secretary is Corinne Jean-Pierre, who, like Jody Powell, has no explanation other than the Republican
Americans did it. A tarot card reader could give you a better analysis than that. Here is the
grim truth. Under President Biden, grocery store prices are up 25% on average, a disaster.
Gas prices, 50% higher than inauguration day, 2021. Cost of a home, up 47%. You want to insure that
expensive house? It'll cost you 64% more than that.
under Donald Trump. Car insurance up 52%. Now, these price hikes are endless, and Ms. Jean-Pierre is shell-shocked.
Even the pro-Biden press is having a very hard time spinning this. It's like saying a root canal
will improve your day. It won't. And the Republicans didn't do it. I'm Bill O'Reilly. I approve the message
by writing it, you can reach me. Bill at Bill O'Reilly.com, Bill at Bill O'Reilly.com, name in town,
if you wish to opine. Okay, let's go to the mail. We got Joseph Gerbino, Middle Village,
New York, and Queens. I agree, O'Reilly, with your idea about two-segment debate with
a 30-minute fact check. However, contains one flaw, and that's called CNN. I have a little doubt
they will do all they can to nail Trump and pick minor errors from Biden. We'll see. CNN is
in dire trouble. Dyer trouble. Any shenanigans going to hurt him, big time. David McGuire,
McCluth, Kansas. I absolutely believe your solution to the debate is the only possible way
to see the truth between two individuals. It's probably without any doubt at all, the closest
anyone could run a debate between these two. Your suggestion is brilliant. Well, I appreciate
that, David. I think about these things a lot.
And what I presented to you with the 30-minute fact check at the end would be so valuable for the American people.
That's why I won't have it.
Joe Severino, Tampa, Florida. Hey, Bill, do you think another reason for Biden doing the debate in June is because Democrat National Committee is in August?
They know if he can't make it through the debate, they might have another candidate.
it. No. This was a decision solely made by the Biden White House, not by any Democratic committee.
Greg, I think Biden was referring to Donald Trump, not showing up at the Republican debates
when he said that Trump was avoiding debates. Possible, Greg. But remember, the context of the
announcement Biden made was debating him, the president. That was a context. It wasn't the
Republican primary. So you're giving Biden the benefit of the doubt. Possible. But again, if that
were Biden's intent, he just muddled it and blew it. It's his fault. In a moment, something you
might not know. Power, politics, and the people behind the headlines. I'm Miranda Devine,

Now the O'Reilly Update brings you something you might, not know.
124 years ago today, an unknown author published a new children's book.
The novel featured a cowardly lion, Tin Man, Scarecrow, and a Wicked Witch.
Here is the story behind The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Creator L. Frank Baum based the characters on experiences from his childhood.
In his 20s, the author's niece, Dorothy, became gravely ill and died from congestion of the brain.
Bound then compiled his personal history into a story.
He settled on the name Oz as a reference to the newly formed nation of Australia.
The book was published on May 17, 1900.
The story was an instant success.
The original run consisted of 10,000 copies by the 1930s.
30s, 5 million Wizard of Oz books had been sold in the USA alone.
It was soon translated into French, Spanish, and German.
Executives at the MGM studio in Hollywood bought the rights to Oz in 1937, after watching
Walt Disney's Snow White become a fabulous success.
The film starred Judy Garland as Dorothy, and it premiered two years later.
Disregarded as one of the finest movies ever made.
It even has its own permanent exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum of American History.
As for the author, L. Frank Baum, well, he wrote a few more books, produced a handful of musicals, and designed crystal chandeliers.
He suffered a stroke and died in 1919 at the age of 62.
And here's something else you might not.
No. The Wizard of Oz went woke long before it was hip to do that. The movie renamed The Wiz
was released in 1978. It had an all-black cast, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and the film swapped
Kansas for Harlem, New York. It was a commercial and critical disaster. The WIS costs $35 million to make,
earned just $5 million at the box office. Back after this.
