By San Pellegrino Chau now.
Bill O'Reilly here.
you are listening to the O'Reilly update.
Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater.
Thank you, Bill.
It is Friday, May 9th, 2025.
Here's what's happening today in America.
The new American Pope, the first nation to sign,
a new nominee and an FAA remaking.
It's all coming up.
Then Bill's going to be here with your message of the day.
But first, the new Pope is an American.
He's now Pope Leo the 14th, born in Chicago.
He's probably the first Pope to be a White Sox fan.
Graduate of Villanova University, that's a famous alum for you.
I imagine but pretty happy over Villanova.
He has voted in Republican primaries.
He's a registered Republican.
But his social media account by way of retweets has been critical of J.D. Vance and Donald Trump.
Alas, our president said it's such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope.
What excitement and what a great honor for our country.
country. I like forward to meeting Pope Leo the 14th. It will be a very meaningful moment.
Big trade announcement yesterday was a new deal with the United Kingdom. The White House said
that this deal will open up $5 billion in new markets for Americans. This is the first nation
to sign a new formal trade agreement after the tariff announcement. The 10% baseline that
Liberation Day tariff remains in effect, which the White House estimates will generate $6 billion
in external revenue. Howard Lutnik, our Commerce Secretary, said they sell Rolls-Royce
engines to Boeing, made in England, we've agreed to let Rolls-Royce engines and those kinds of
plane parts to come over tariff-free. And what you're going to hear today is there's going to be a
big announcement in the UK that they're buying $10 billion worth of Boeing planes later today.
Disappointing news, Ed Martin will not be the U.S. attorney for D.C., a few Republicans
bailed on him. So Donald Trump named Fox News host Judge Janine Piro as the interim U.S.
attorney. If those Republicans had a problem with Ed Martin, I imagine they're going to have
same qualms with Piero. Tom Tillis in North Carolina was the main Republican against Ed Martin.
He's up for re-election coming up in 2026. There's talk of possibly Laura Trump, a North
Carolina native, running against him. Donald Trump said he'll name Ed Martin to be the new director
of the weaponization working group at the Department of Justice, as well as associate deputy attorney
general. The FAA has pledged to fix all the problems at Newark Airport. Trump spoke at an event
with Secretary Duffy, our transportation secretary, and Trump said a complete modernization is
going to be taking place soon. We are beginning the process of fully replacing the technology
at more than 4,600 air traffic control sites and building six new state-of-the-art air traffic
control coordination centers. This is clearly what we need, a massive revolutionary change.
Trump said it's long overdue for a remaking from the ancient infrastructure that we're still using
today. Bill O'Reilly has your message of the day. Next.

Time now for the O'Reilly Update, message of the day.
On this Friday, Pope Leo the 14th, if you can read Roman numerals, that's kind of a dying thing,
isn't it? I can read them. New Pope, my non-Catholic friends are going, so what, we don't
care, that kind of thing. The pagans actually deride the institution of the Catholic Church
and the Pope and all the pomp and circumstance in Rome.
But to me, the Pope is a very worthy person on this planet.
There have been some bad ones, but many more good ones than bad.
And basically they put forth a message derived from Jesus the Nazarene,
who is the most famous person in the world,
and there is nobody even close to being second.
And there's a reason for that.
And I wrote a book on it called Killing Jesus, a history.
You might want to check that out.
Anyway, getting back to Pope Leo the 14th, he's an American, and that shocked a lot of people.
But he hasn't been in the United States actively for about 10 years.
He was a top cleric in Peru.
Then he went over to Rome, a scholar.
Looks like a gentleman, not a whiff of corruption.
I think he'll be a little more traditional in his beliefs than Pope Francis, but I don't know that.
So anyway, congratulations to the new Pope, and I hope he helps the world.
I'm Bill O'Reilly. I approve the message by writing it. You can reach me.

Now let's go to the mail.
We got Susan Underwood, Delaware, Oklahoma.
Bill, you mentioned all the deaths caused by Hitler and Mussolini.
How do you feel about all the deaths caused by Joe Biden's leadership?
I'm going to stop you right there, Susan.
You can't make those comparisons.
That's like comparing Trump to Hitler or all.
You just can't.
Hitler and Mussolini, you're not going to have millions of people, all right?
And once you do that, then you lose all credibility.
Now I'm saying it's to look out for you.
Got to make the comparison valid.
Evan Ortega, Westwood, Los Angeles.
Countries including Israel, UK, France, and Germany allow trans people to serve in the military.
This disgraceful decision by Secretary Hegstaff is obviously driven by politics rather than military readiness.
Okay, I respect your opinion on that, Evan.
But in all the countries, and there are 30 of them that allow trans people to serve in the military, there are limitations.
Can't be on drugs.
Can't be on hormone blockers and things like that.
I don't think any of them pay for surgeries except the USA.
That is the problem.
But we want to be fair on it.
Janet Elaine Lippet, Sullivan, Indiana.
We quit watching Network News.
We no longer watch it because most of it's not true.
Very good.
We got tired of the Trump bashing, so that's why we watch the no-spin news.
We care, Bill, but we don't know how to change the media.
There's nothing you can do but not watch it.
But my point is, are you interested in hearing about it?
DeWitt, how much due process is enough?
Didn't Mr. Garcia have a day in court when he was ordered to be deported?
He did not.
He was deported on a roundup of criminal aliens in Maryland.
He was under a judge's order for a claim of asylum.
Okay?
And DeWitt goes on to say, how is it allowed to request asylum?
I thought you only had to do that outside the country.
No, you can request asylum here, but there are ways to do it.
And the immigration lawyers know the ways.
In a moment, something you might not know.

Now the O'Reilly Update breaches something you might. Not know.
A hundred eleven years ago today, President Woodrow Wilson cleared a new national holiday.
Henceforth, the second Sunday of May would be dedicated towards the...
the matriarchs of America.
Here is the story behind Mother's Day.
The festivities date back to ancient Greece.
In early spring, folks in Athens would make offerings to the goddess Rhea, a symbol of female
fertility and motherhood.
The earliest mention of Mother's Day in America took place in 1872 when the residents of Boston
held a parade to promote motherhood and world peace.
On May 10, 1914, President Wilson turned the event into a national holiday, quote,
The people of the United States should display the flag at their homes or other suitable places
on the second Sunday in May as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of
our country, unquote. Today, the holiday translates into big business. Each year, Americans
spend more than $34 billion on gifts.
and meals for mom. Most popular presents this year, jewelry, chocolate, flowers. Despite its
Western origins, Mother's Day is also celebrated around a world. Though the exact dates
change, most nations mark the event in May. Mexicans honor their moms with
mariachi bands. The Japanese serve tea. Thailand exchange white flowers.
Ethiopians roast cows, and here's something else you might not know.
The most recent country to adopt Mother's Day, North Korea, dictator Kim Jong-un,
acknowledged the holiday in 2015, said the communist, quote,
Today we honor the glorious day of women and the education of our Marxist children
and the devotion they have for upholding our shining star of a socialist society, unquote.
But be careful.
Praising Kim is encouraged throughout Mother's Day.
However, exchanging presents can carry a prison sentence.
