Starting point is 00:00:00 Bill O'Reilly here Thursday, October 17, 2019. You are listening to the O'Reilly update. Here's what's happening today in America. High-level meetings on Syria between President Trump and top Democrats break down. San Diego officials say sections of the new border wall are reducing illegal immigration. The federal debt this year, $1.2 trillion. The end may be near for the print edition of an Ikewarm. iconic American newspaper. Powerful Democratic Congressman Elijah Cummings dies at the age of 68. Also had the message the real story about poverty in the USA. But first, high-level talks on Syria descending into chaos in the White House. President Trump, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, not agreeing on much. Ms. Pelosi then accusing President Trump of having a, quote,
Starting point is 00:00:59 serious meltdown toward the end of their 45-minute session. Mr. Trump calling Speaker Pelosi a, quote, third-rate politician during the exchange, our federal government at work. Officials in San Diego, California confirming new sections of border wall between the U.S. and Mexico are having a significant impact on illegal immigration. Approximately 14 miles of new fencing have been erected since last year's migrant caravans from Central America. Border agents now say apprehensions, down 50% because of the wall. Federal debt rising to $1.2 trillion for the 2019 fiscal year alone. That's more than $9,400 for every single household in the USA. Connors blame the increase on tax cuts, rising costs for Medicare and Medicaid, also tariffs on goods from China. The total national debt now stands at
Starting point is 00:02:02 $22 trillion, most of it racked up in the last 15 years. The newspaper USA Today confirming it will likely phase out its print edition. The entire newspaper industry continues to fall as the internet dominates. Baltimore congressman and civil rights leader Elijah Cummings has died. The Maryland politician passed away early Thursday morning from longstanding health issues. Throughout his career, Mr. Cummings fought for the rights of minorities, inner city residents, and those with AIDS. Elijah Cummings was 68. In a moment, the message of the day, the real story about American poverty. Right back with that. A young lady was looking to buy her first home in Texas. The market at her price point is very hot, so she went to real estate agents,
Starting point is 00:02:58 itrust.com, for help. To ensure her offer was accepted, her agent suggested the following steps. One, get pre-qualified with a mortgage company that her agent had a history using to satisfy the seller's agent. Two, find a home that was priced to sell so they knew the owner was ready to move. Three, Find a home well located and priced correctly so it could be leased if an emergency occurred. Four, anticipating multiple offers offer more than asking, but still less than what the house would be appraised for. And five, offered a help with some of the closing costs. The house the lady wanted had 10 offers in three days, but she got the house because she had an agent who knew how to get the job done. That's why I love real estate.
Starting point is 00:03:48 agents, I trust.com. No pinheads, just great agents. Get moving with real estate agents. I trust.com. That's real estate agents. I trust.com. Time now for the O'Reilly update. Message of the day being poor in America, the truth. According to U.S. census, approximately 30 million Americans are now living in poverty. That's about 9% of us. The common metric is a family of four earning below $25,000. According to the Heritage Foundation, the vast majority of those living in poverty in America actually enjoy a fairly decent standard of living. For example, poor U.S. households have televisions at a rate of 98%. Microwaves, 81%, air conditioning, 78%. DVD or Blu-ray players, 65%. Cable or satellite TV, 63%. And the typical poor American
Starting point is 00:04:56 has more living space than the average middle class, European. This is not to diminish poverty. It is a terrible circumstance because if you don't have any money, any assets, you are powerless. You cannot write wrongs. Sometimes you can't pay your bills. And if anything unexpected happens, you're powerless. So poverty is a situation that must be dealt with, but it has to be dealt with in a truthful way. The Democrats running for president would have us believe that the American poor have no chance. This week in a debate, Beto O'Rour. told the story of a woman in Las Vegas, who Mr. O'Rourke said, has four jobs and lives in her car with her daughter. I tweeted, I don't believe the story. You don't have four jobs and live in your
Starting point is 00:05:59 car in a place like Las Vegas. Well, for that, I was attacked personally, vehemently, in every way by the left. CBS even tracked the woman down. And what I said is absolutely true. She does not have four jobs. She does work, one hour a day here, cleans a friend's house there, but she has no organized job. However, the lady has an automobile, and Las Vegas needs drivers. She has a driver's license. If she got into a taxi cab, she could make $60,000 a year. This is what I'm talking about. There are ways for disadvantaged Americans, many of them, not all, to make it. They don't all have to be supported by other Americans. Now, I also looked up Beto O'Rourke's financial situation, and it's interesting. So Mr. Compassion made $370,000 in 2017. You want to know how much he gave
Starting point is 00:07:09 to charity? Beto O'Rourke and his wife gave $1,166 to charity in 2017, 0.3% of their income. And Beto O'Rourke's wife's father is worth $500 million, according to Forbes magazine. So Beto, you're a phony. You don't tell the truth. but I do. Poverty is terrible. All Americans should help the poor. I do through my foundation. But don't be laying this trip on us that the poor have no chance. They do. Right back with something you might not know. Now the O'Reilly update brings you something you might not know. It's been a rough few years for the National Football League since former quarterback Colin Kaepernick
Starting point is 00:09:08 began protesting the U.S. National Anthem back in 2016. Television viewership is down, about 10%. Stadium attendance, 5% down. Despite the problems, the NFL will celebrate its 100th season this year and it's still a gigantic money-making machine. In all, the National Football League generates $15 billion in revenue annually. The most valuable team in the USA, that would be the Dallas Cowboys, worth more than $5.5 billion. That's a 10% increase from last season. Not surprisingly, all the money trickles down a player salaries,
Starting point is 00:09:44 quarterbacks being the highest paid position. Seattle Seahawks, Russell Wilson, signed the largest deal in NFL history last April four years, $140 million, including a record $65 million signing bonus. Steelers quarterback Ben Rothlisberger signed a two-year extension worth $68 million, including a $37 million bonus and $30 million in injury guarantees, which he needs because he's out for the season. Now, these big salaries come with big risks. For NFL athletes, a career-ending injury is always one play away.
Starting point is 00:10:20 The most common injuries impact the knee and the brain, more than 200 concussions last year alone. Offensive and defensive linemen experienced the most injuries, while running backs tend to have the highest injury rate. Sadly, new reports show an increasing number of retired NFL players over the age of 50 are displaying signs of major cognitive issues. So if you're interested in helping retired football players and their families. Remember, a lot of them didn't make money way back. Consider making a donation to the Joe Namath Foundation. The Joe Namath Neurological Research Center at Jupiter Medical Center is investigating new ways to reverse brain injuries and improve long-term recovery. You can visit joanameth.org for more information. And that is something you might not know.
