Starting point is 00:00:00 Bill O'Reilly here. You are listening to the O'Reilly update. Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater. Thank you, Bill. It is Wednesday, October 4th, 2023. Here's what's happening today in America. McCarthy, out. Michael Jordan, up, stock market down, and electrons all over the place. It's all coming up. Then Bill will be here with your message today. But first, for the first time in American history, The Speaker of the House has been kicked out, led by Matt Gates from Florida, seven other Republicans, eight total, kicked Speaker McCarthy out of the seat, along with all the other Democrats voting as well. And no one has any idea what comes next.
Starting point is 00:00:47 One congressman proposed that Donald J. Trump become the new Speaker of the House, and they will have a vote on it. You don't have to be a sitting member of Congress to be Speaker of the House. Former House Speaker New Gingrich said that House Republicans should expel Matt Gates. He says House Republicans have far more important things to do
Starting point is 00:01:06 than entertain one member's ego. Michael Jordan is now worth $3 billion. He is the first professional athlete to enter the Forbes richest 400 people. That's surprising. Wouldn't you have thought
Starting point is 00:01:20 that there would have been many pro athletes in that list already? Michael Jordan was the majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets NBA team for 13 years. He bought it for 200, $175 million, just sold it for $3 billion, that's a pretty good return on investment. Now, for the rest of us, the Dow fell more than 500 points, U.S. Treasury yields, highest levels
Starting point is 00:01:40 over a decade. The Fed said that they're likely to hike rates again one more time this year. The Labor Department released August job numbers. Job openings are up, which the Fed interprets as, I mean, the economy is doing too good. It's running too hot, which means they're going to raise rates. Many experts worry that the next domino to fall is the housing market, which would trigger a recession. CNN has a fear and greed index, and we are in extreme fear. It's one to 100.
Starting point is 00:02:10 It's 16. It's the lowest level since last October. Three scientists have won the Nobel Prize in physics for being able to measure how fast electrons move in an atom. Scientists can now measure one quintillionth of a second. It's an addos second. How fast is that? Well, take a second, cut it into a thousand pieces six times. There are as many add-o-seconds in one second as there have been seconds that have passed in 14 billion years.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Now we can measure one of those. I hope this can lead to better electronics and disease diagnoses. I'm Mike Slater. The great Bill O'Reilly with your message of the day. Next. Let's face it, the U.S. economy is under. stress. National debt rising, trade war, shaking the markets. And meanwhile, China is dumping the dollar and stockpiling gold. That's why I protected my savings with physical gold and

On this Wednesday quick quiz, what do governors Newsom, Hockel, and Pritzker of Illinois all have in
Starting point is 00:04:11 comment? Answer, their progressive, politically correct, virtue signalers. Newsom and Hockel are also sanctuary city people, while old J.B. never met a leftist cause he didn't like. But now the governors who are welcoming and woke are also desperate. Thousands of foreign nationals are showing up in their states and many have to be fed and housed. J.B. says Illinois has spent 330 million on the situation and is begging President Biden to reimburse. The president will not. Remember, Barack Obama's pastor, Reverend Wright, saying, the chickens have come home to roost? Well, past assault,
Starting point is 00:05:00 more chicken is on the table. The woke left thought it was swell to thumb its collective nose at U.S. immigration law. It wasn't inclusive or welcoming, so we the progressives will ignore it. And that's what they did. Now, chaos is here, courtesy of President Biden, who has absolutely no idea what he is doing from day to day. In the process, hardworking Americans have to pay the bills for this colossal mismanagement of the border and immigration. It is just 13 months before the next election, and the chickens are waiting. I'm Bill O'Reilly. I approve the message by writing it. You can reach me. Bill at Bill O'Reilly.com, bill at bill o'Reilly.com, name in town, if you wish to opine. Now let's go to the mail.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Gary, Matt Gates is trying to hold McCarthy to the promises he made to become speaker, which he's not doing. You know, you've got to give all of these leadership positions a little time, in my opinion. I think McCarthy wants to do what's best for the country, but you've got to be realistic about things. Gates isn't, in my opinion. He's a bomb thrower. Lisa, Mr. O, I hardly contribute to the economy for the above reasons. I cook pretty much every night, pack leftovers for lunch. Our grocery bill is outrageous.
Starting point is 00:06:40 You know, look, I want a consumer revolt, Lisa. I don't want you to be in a hardship, and I want you to be smart about, you know, what you buy and what you don't buy. but I told everybody yesterday, when I walk into a deli and order chicken with rice soup and a guy says it's $14,000, I walk out of the deli. I'm not a sap, SAP. Anna, concierge, remember, I totally agree. Prices for clothing and shoes are already extremely high. It's mostly junk. I never go to the coffee places.
Starting point is 00:07:13 I make my own coffee. I'm telling you, you're on my wavelength, Anna, the $6 coffees. why don't you just set your money on fire okay i i just i sit there i'm just amazed and in my area these these gourmet coffee plate packed packed uh kim too many parents are having to quietly tell their children and put things back because they can't afford more than a basis four nice sized apples can easily set you back 12 bucks i'm sorry about that but you know if you shop or around, you can find what you want for a reasonable amount of money. But you have to do the research. You have to look. In a moment, something you might not know.

Starting point is 00:08:33 Now the O'Reilly Update brings you something you might not know. 66 years ago today, one of America's most beloved sitcoms debuted on CBS. For the next six years, millions tuned in each week to see Ward, June, Wally and the Beeve. Here is the story of Leave It to Beaver. The show is built around the Cleaver family and their life in the fictional suburban town of Mayfield. The pilot aired October 4, 1957, but few Americans watched. CBS dropped the Beaver show after one season.
Starting point is 00:09:15 ABC, though, picked it up where it ran for another five years. Leavid de Beaver is considered the quintessential 1950s sitcom featuring a nuclear family struggling with issues like bullying, bad grades, and childhood angst. The parents even slept in separate twin beds. Today the show is ranked as one of the most influential television series of all time. Said Lever to Beaver actor Jerry Mathers, quote, I think the main thing that made us a classic is that the episodes were all from real life. I think it's one of the few really truthful, honest shows that represents the late 1950s and early 60s,
Starting point is 00:10:03 and it also represents everything that's good about the American family, unquote. And here's something else you might not know. The debut episode of Levy to Beaver was supposed to appear late in the season, but CBS refused to air the pilot because it contained a scene with a toilet. At that time, showing the inside of bathrooms was considered taboo. The plot featured Beaver and Wally keeping a pet alligator in the bowl. To compromise, the crew reshot the scene to only show the tank. Hollywood censors finally approved the episode.
Starting point is 00:10:49 It was the first time Americans had ever seen a WC water closet on television. Some Leave It to Beaver trivia back after this.
