Starting point is 00:00:00 Bill O'Reilly here. You are listening to the O'Reilly update. Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater. Thank you, Bill. It is Thursday, October 5th, 2023. Here's this happening today in America. A real government shutdown. Largest strike of its kind in history.
Starting point is 00:00:21 Watch out for Paris. And Disney has never been more gay. It's all coming up. Then Bill will be here with your message today. But first, this is a real government shutdown. Not the phony bologna government shutdowns where it's like, oh no, we have to shut down the national parks. This is a real government shutdown.
Starting point is 00:00:38 There's no speaker of the house, so nothing can happen. Two Republicans have officially put their name in the running, Jim Jordan from Ohio and Steve Scalise from Louisiana. But Steve Scalise is cancer. So you'd think it'd be hard to travel and raise money during cancer treatments. Hopefully, whenever the vote takes place, it's fewer than the 15 it took to get Kevin McCarthy in his seat. Speaking of shutdown, the largest healthcare strike in U.S. history is going on right now.
Starting point is 00:01:03 75,000 unionized employees of Kaiser Permanente walked off the job, California, Colorado, Washington, Virginia, Oregon, and D.C. It's 40% of the staff overall, basically everyone except for the doctors and the nurses. Non-emergency and elective surgeries, the hospital recommends to reschedule, but the ERs will remain open. Watch out for the bedbugs in Paris. Only 10 months before the 2024 Summer Olympics, Paris is crawling with bedbugs. And they're not just in beds, by the way. The reason they're called bedbugs is because they tend to come out at night to feed on human blood.
Starting point is 00:01:38 Doctors suggest doing an inspection of your hotel room under mattresses and curtains looking for them. They say if traveling you should keep your luggage in the bathroom because the bedbugs don't like the tile floors. They also recommend spraying isopropyl alcohol on fabrics. because the bedbugs will come out of their hiding places. They don't like the rubbing alcohol. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, Glad, released its annual Studio Responsibility Index. It tracks how much LGBTQ content different movie studios are pumping out each year. And number one at the top of the list, Disney.
Starting point is 00:02:15 Disney Studios included LGBTQ characters in all five of the Disney theatrical releases. and Glad celebrated that LGBTQ representation was groundbreaking in kids and family spaces. Disney released 59 films last year, 24 of them were LGBTQ inclusive. So 2% of the population and 41% of your children's movies. That's why some call it grooming. I'm Mike Slater, the author of Killing the Witches, Bill O'Reilly, with your message of the day. Next. Let's face it, the U.S. economy is under stress.
Starting point is 00:02:52 national debt rising, trade war, shaking the markets, and meanwhile, China is dumping the dollar and stockpiling gold. Starting point is 00:03:57 Time now for the O'Reilly Update, message of the day. On this Thursday, Democrats in the House showed the nation once again that they are far more cohesive than their Republican peers. Not one dem, not one, voted for Speaker McCarthy to retain his job. And so, for the first time in American history, as you have heard, a Speaker of the House is dismissed. Eight Republicans cast ballots to Ouse McCarthy, led by Congressman Matt Gates, who believes a former Speaker, is not tough enough on liberal policies and high government spending.
Starting point is 00:04:31 So Gates won, but his party lost. With the presidential election 13 months away, the grand old party has shown weakness to the nation. Kevin McCarthy is a consensus seeker, and in this polarized country, that did not play well among some on the far right. In theory, limiting government spending is vitally important, but at this point, the Matt Gates Brigade does not have the votes to stop the fiscal madness that Democrats and President Biden have unleashed. So it is farewell to Mr. McCarthy, as Speaker of the House. Hey, Kevin, we hardly knew you.
Starting point is 00:05:18 It was unfair. He did not deserve this. And the reason is, the core reason that McCarthy was booted is that there is no leader at this point in the Republican Party. Donald Trump is not really a Republican. He's a populist. No leadership leads to chaos. Riley, I approve the message by writing it. You can reach me. Bill at Bill O'Reilly.com. Bill at
Starting point is 00:05:49 Bill O'Reilly.com. Name in town if you wish to opine. Now let's go to the mail. Donna. Matt Gett stood up and faced all of those congressmen down. We went toe to toe with them. One every single time. He had quick and intelligent responses to each of them. All right. So Donna's a Matt Gates fan. This is another Donna. Okay, we have one Donna who likes gets another Donna, a concierge member, direct access to me. I'm very weary of Republicans who can't get their acts together.
Starting point is 00:06:24 Why can't Republicans take a page to the Democrats' playbook, go behind closed doors, parked their overheated egos at the door, close rank, do what is right for the country and the American people? I don't know what. Perhaps because they have no leader. Maybe that's what. Patricia, timing is everything. truly there is no room for personal vendetta within a party that wants to win the hearts and votes
Starting point is 00:06:47 of the people. Ask Liz Cheney how that one worked out. I think bad guess is going to regret what he did, but that's just a guess. Ray Epfell, Los Angeles, California. I thought for changes to be brought, there had to be standing on behalf of claimant. I'm not aware of any lender's insurers complaining about Donald Trump in New York City. Isaac's case going forward because the attorney general says New York State is complaining. The people of New York State, Trump somehow offended them or hurt them. That's why this is a witch hunt. Did I tell you the story yesterday if I didn't know? I'm sorry to be repetitive. So I said to a Trump guy, can every time Donald Trump says the words
Starting point is 00:07:36 witch hunt, can he hold up killing the witches please? My book. That would be. really good publicity because it's the same thing. It's what we're getting into in a book. San Francisco number 10, 20 million tourists every year, but that number is cratering because of public disorder in the streets of San Francisco. What would Carl Malden say? Next, boss.
Starting point is 00:09:11 Austin, Great Town, Miami, Denver, then Las Vegas. Sin City is home to 20 of the world's largest hotels. It's also the brightest place on the planet. Visitors to the International Space Station can see the strip while orbiting Earth. Number five, most visited city, Seattle, then Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York. The Big Apple is a hot spot for, global visitors. 30% of tourists visiting NYC come from Europe or Asia. The top city in America for tourists, Orlando, Florida. All this travel generates major dollars, of course. the average household spends between $5,000 and $9,000 on a family vacation.
