Here's what's happening this week in America.
Starting point is 00:00:30 Strike delayed, unlikely helpers back in Butler and DNA test gone wrong. That's all coming up. Then Bill's going to be here with your message of the day. But first, the longshore men have thrown Kamala a bone, paused their strike until January 15th. They're extending their expired contract until that day. A strike, of course, would have hurt our supply chain, been bad for anyone, bad politically, for Kamala. A tentative agreement was reached to increase wages by $7. 62% over the next six years. So hourly wages will ultimately be $63 an hour. But the union
Starting point is 00:01:06 and the employer has yet to come to terms on automation, which the union doesn't want. Hurricane Helene death toll now approaching 200. There are still hundreds missing in the remote mountain areas of North Carolina. Regular people volunteering are leading the rescue effort in many of these places. Small regional airports have turned into local donation and delivery zones. A volunteer in what's called Redneck Marines said because of people's generosity our community is saving lives we were able to get supplies
Starting point is 00:01:34 to a remote area today for at least 100 people who had no contact with anyone until yesterday. The storm was a week ago. Even on the ground, mules from the mountain mule packer ranch were able to pass through
Starting point is 00:01:49 otherwise unpassable roads to deliver medicine and other supplies to people. Mules! We're using mules. Donald Trump will be hosting a rally this weekend. not a very newsworthy event more 31 days to the election of course they're going to have rallies what's newsworthy about this rally is it is in butler pennsylvania the site where back on july 13th Donald trump was shot in the head the feds this time have said basically we got it we got it
Starting point is 00:02:16 this time we're not going to make the same mistakes a butler county commissioner said we have the benefit from learning from the prior event yeah i would say so like how about you put someone on the closest roof to the president that happens to have a direct line of sight Have we learned that lesson? Trump wrote on Twitter, I'm coming back to Butler, with a picture of him raising his fist in the air, yelling fight, fight, fight. And Elon Musk retweeted and said,
Starting point is 00:02:38 I will be there to support. A father and daughter in Las Vegas took an ancestry DNA test just to check their genealogy. Turns out they're not related. The father's now suing the now defunct fertility clinic. Turns out his sperm was not inserted into his wife's egg. I'm Mike Slater from the podcast, Politics by Faith. The great Bill O'Reilly,
Starting point is 00:02:58 your message of the day. Next. Let's face it, the U.S. economy is under stress. National debt rising, trade war, shaking the markets. There are reports that Donald Trump is refusing to do a 60-minute interview. The scenario was that CBS News would give Kamala Harris a half an hour and Mr. Trump a half an hour run it on Monday.
Starting point is 00:04:26 and Mr. Trump is balking. Now, that could change, but the former president says, look, last time I did an interview with 60 Minutes, Leslie Stahl said that the Hunter Biden dossier, the laptop, was not real. And Ms. Stahl did make it a point to go out of her way to say, this hasn't been verified, and on and on and on. So Donald Trump says,
Starting point is 00:04:55 look, I'm not going to do the interview with 60 Minutes until they apologize for Ms. Stahl's deception. Now, at the time, I don't think Leslie Stahl knew one way or the other, whether Hunter Biden's laptop was legitimate, but it doesn't matter. She did go out of her way to cast aspersions at Donald Trump's contention that Hunter's laptop was damning and real, in which it was. So 60 minutes does owe Trump, an apology, which they will never do. So unless Trump changes his mind, there's not going to be any 60 minutes interview. But the real reason the foreign president isn't doing it is because the Trump team, based on internal polling, believes it will win the election in November. So why take any chances? I'm Bill O'Reilly. I approve the message
Starting point is 00:05:51 by writing it. You can reach me. Bill at Bill O'Reilly. dot com, bill at bill o'Reilly.com, name in town if you wish to opine. Now let's go to the mail. Alan Smith, Palm City, Florida. Vance had a good debate, but missed a chance to explain the Democrats' faulty border bill. It's true. And they spent far too much time in the weeds, and I'll get to that in a moment. But the bill that Kamala and walls are blaming for the border chaos, number one, that's false. Number two, the bill is horrible. as we went over here. Brian Pierce, West Boylston, Massachusetts,
Starting point is 00:06:29 I'm disgusted by both presidential candidates and their VP choices. I don't see any one of them who really cares about the American people. They're all self-absorbed. I can't make that determination, but I can say most politicians fit that category, Brian. Michael, concierge member, Michael gets direct access to me
Starting point is 00:06:48 through email. Anyone noticed that all the commercials on CBS were bashing Trump? They showed their budget. bias in spades while trying to look fair. Trump people could have bought commercials on CBS. They just shows not to. That's not a fair criticism.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Carl Riley, Smithfield, Illinois. I watched a debate between Vance and Walves. One question. I wish Vance would have asked. You said the rich should pay their fair share. What's the fair share? They never answered that. I asked Barack Obama that in one of my famous interviews with him.
Starting point is 00:07:22 What's my fair share? What do you want? 50, 60, 70? They want every penny they can get the Democrat progressives. That's what they want. Adori Trumbo. O'Coma, South Dakota. I watched the debate. Followed your tweets, O'Reilly. I think both candidates did well, but definitely think Vance out-debated Walsh. You always say candidates should stick to the issues, but Walsh did not. While Vance did, you said it was tedious. I said it was tedious when they get in the weeds of health care legislation that's never going to get passed. That's what congressional committees are for, to hash all that out. Don't do that on the debate stage. It's a broader
Starting point is 00:08:06 philosophical discussion. In a moment, something you might not know. Sports fans often debate the greatest baseball. player of all time. Names on that list include Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Barry Bonds. But a foreign-born major league baseball player may turn out to be the best of all time. Here is the story of Shohei Otani. Born in 1994, Japan, player gained national fame in high school, started playing professional baseball in 2012 when he was 18 years old. During his time in Japan, Shohei became a superstar.
Starting point is 00:09:32 In 2017, he made the leap to Major League Baseball, signing with the Los Angeles Angels for tens of millions of dollars. Famous for both hitting and pitching, Shohei won the American League rookie of the year in 2018 and has continued to smash record since then. Last week, for example, 30-year-old Otani accomplished a feat no player has ever done. He's now the first athlete to enter the so-called 50-50 club. That's hitting 50 home runs and stealing 50 bases in a single season. Nobody has ever done that before. The previous record belonged to Alice Rodriguez in 1998.
Starting point is 00:10:21 he had 42 homers, 42 steals. Today, the man from Japan enjoys one of the most lucrative contracts in baseball, 10-year deal, $700 million. And I can't translate that into yen for you, but it's a lot, as Donald Trump might say. Shoai Otani is now a sports icon all over the world. His global popularity is only rivaled by soccer legends, Lionel Messi and David Beckham. And here's something else you might not know.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Otani is also known for charity giving. Baseball store donates his money on both sides of the Pacific. His biggest project is financing relief efforts for natural disasters in Japan, most recently the 2011 tsunami. Mr. Otani maintains a permanent resident in L.A. and Tokyo. Also, he is building a lavish home in Hawaii. Back in a moment. Hey, I'm Caitlin Becker, the host of the New York Postcast,
