Starting point is 00:00:00 Bill O'Reilly here. You are listening to the O'Reilly Update, sponsored by Tax Network USA. America's number one choice for tax resolution. Please go to TNUSA.com slash bill or call 800-245-6-0-0. Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater. Thank you, Bill. It is Monday, September 2nd, 2024. It is Labor Day.
Starting point is 00:00:29 If you are working today, thank you very much. Here's what's happening today in America. The post-convention bounce, six hostages executed. American raid against ISIS and 49ers rookie shot in the chest. It's all coming up. Then Bill's going to be here with your message of the day. But first, Kamala Harris got no convention bounce. That's from an ABC news poll.
Starting point is 00:00:51 Ouch. Now, the spin is that all of the post-convention bounce occurred the week before the convention with the whirlwind of her just getting the nomination and picking walls as her vice president. That took all the energy out of the convention balloon. I don't know. Internal polling probably doesn't look good, which caused Kamala to make a big deal about Trump
Starting point is 00:01:12 going to Arlington National Cemetery the other day at the invite of Gold Star families from the Afghanistan withdrawal. Kamala released a long statement and then eight of the families posted videos telling Kamala basically to get lost. Trump's statement, the leaders of that disaster should be fired immediately.
Starting point is 00:01:29 We have fools in the White House, and now they're going to try to solve the hostage crisis in Israel. Guess how that's going to turn out. What was he referring to there? Well, six hostages held by Hamas and Gaza were executed, one of them, an American. How much does Hamas fear us knowing that they can just kill an American, and we'll do nothing in response? There were massive protests in Israel, of course blaming Hamas for the murders, but also upset at the Israeli government for not getting these hostages home safely. U.S. and Iraqi forces conducted a raid in Western Iraq, killed 15 ISIS members. Seven Americans were injured.
Starting point is 00:02:07 Pentagon said among the dead were important leaders of the first rank. This operation took two months to plan. Air strikes were followed by airborne units. A San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver shot in the chest in broad daylight in Union Square, downtown San Francisco. This is a nice part of the city. It's all relative, but the Ritz Carlton is there. Two blocks from the Children's Museum.
Starting point is 00:02:32 It used to be nice anyway. He was shot in the chest in an attempted robbery. The bullet went through his chest, out his back. 17-year-old was also shot. He was the would-be burglar. He's in custody. Pearsall's mom wrote on Facebook, I want to thank God for protecting my baby boy.
Starting point is 00:02:48 God shielded him. I'm Mike Slater from the podcast, Politics by Faith, and I will be here with your message of the day about freedom of speech. Next. Let's face it, the U.S. economy is under stress. National debt rising, trade war, shaking the markets. And meanwhile, China is dumping the dollar and stockpiling gold. That's why I protected my savings with physical gold and silver.

Starting point is 00:03:53 Again, that's 866, 326-5576, or text Bill to 998899. I'm Mike Slater, filling in it for Bill O'Reilly. Now it's time for your message of the day. Benjamin Franklin said, in those wretched countries where a man cannot call his tongue his own, he can scarce call anything his own. Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freedom of speech. That freedom of speech, a terrible thing to public traitors. There are a lot of things to be concerned about in a Kamala Walls administration near the top of the list is Tim Walz's
Starting point is 00:04:36 view on freedom of speech. There's no guarantee to free speech on misinformation or hate speech and especially around our democracy. Ooh, there is nothing that matters as much as your freedom of speech, except maybe the Second Amendment, which protects your freedom of speech. couple things to know about this right. First of all, it's not natural. The first thing to know about the importance of freedom of speech is it's not natural for a country and a people to have it. That's all we've ever known in America, so we think it is the natural and normal way to live, but it's not. We are the outlier. So if we don't defend it, it will go away. Have you seen what's going on in England right now? Our European friends do not have freedom of speech and people
Starting point is 00:05:17 are getting arrested for things they post on Facebook. This is the director of public prosecutions in England and Wales. The offence of incitement to racial hatred involves publishing or distributing material, which is insulting or abusive, which is intended to or likely to start racial hatred. So if you say something, you write something on Facebook or whatever, that might incite racial hatred, that's enough for the police to knock on your door,
Starting point is 00:05:47 like what happened to this guy. I'm arresting you on suspicion of improper use, of the electronic communications network. What? Anything you do say maybe given evidence? Do you understand that? So I'm actually being arrested? You're going to be arrested, okay?
Starting point is 00:06:02 Right. So you got to the police station. Right. Okay, this is in relation to some comments that you've made on a Facebook page. Oh, really? Oh, she's a Facebook crime, is it? Okay.
Starting point is 00:06:13 Right. So what kind of speech will get you arrested in England? Well, earlier this year, a guy printed stickers that a judge said, expressed views of a nationalist nature with the intent to stir up racial hatred. The stickers had phrases like, it's okay to be white and reject white guilt. Another said they seek conquest, not asylum. The judge said the publication of this kind of material is corrosive to our society. Two years in prison.
Starting point is 00:06:40 The standard of free speech in America is you can say anything up to inciting imminent, lawless action. That's the line that can't be crossed. You can look at two Supreme Court cases on that dating. back to 1969, Brandon Brin v. Ohio, and Hess v. Indiana, if you want to know more about those cases. But misinformation can't be against the law, Tim Walls, because who defines what misinformation is? And hate speech can't be against the law because who defines what is hateful or not? If we accept that argument, then your freedom of speech is gone. I don't know if we'll ever
Starting point is 00:07:12 have our freedom of speech taken away in America. I'm more concerned about people just giving it away, giving up the support of it, people silencing themselves in the name of being nice. We used to live in a culture where the highest ideal was truth. And freedom of speech was a part of that effort. But today, the highest moral order is to be nice. And freedom of speech isn't always nice. Sometimes it can be offensive. Sometimes it must be offensive.
Starting point is 00:07:37 As Thomas Jefferson said, reason and free inquiry are the only effectual agents against error. But again, that assumes that your goal is truth. And for many people in our country today, it's not. You'll also hear a lot of people say, well, you can't yell fire in a a crowd of theater. You can't if the theater's on fire. And there's a lot of fires in our country right now that people need to speak out about. Don't stay silent. Something you might not know. Next. Power, politics, and the people behind the headlines. I'm Miranda Devine, New York Post columnist,
Starting point is 00:08:13 and the host of the brand new podcast, Podforce One. Every week I'll sit down for candid conversations with Washington's most powerful disruptors, lawmakers, newsmakers, and even the president of the United States. These are the leaders shaping the future of America and the world. Listen to Podforce One with me, Miranda Devine, every week on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcast. You don't want to miss an episode. Hey, I'm Mike Slater feeling for Bill O'Reilly. Now it's time for something. you might not know. On my radio show, every Monday at 6 o'clock Eastern, we start off the week with a segment on gratitude. Because if we want to save our country, we can't just win with
Starting point is 00:08:59 politics. That's important, of course. But we also need to save this country with virtue. And Cicero said that gratitude is the parent of all virtues. So if we want to save our country, we need to be grateful and build our gratitude muscle. So we always open the phones every Monday at 6 and ask, what are you grateful for? And the calls have been amazing this last year or so. We've been doing it. It's a great way to start off the week. luckily said to fail to experience gratitude is to fail to recognize how much we've received from the great wellsprings of human talent that have come before us. We need a rebirth of gratitude for those who have cared for us, living and mostly dead. The high moments of our life
Starting point is 00:09:37 are their gifts to us. We must remember them in our thoughts and in our prayers and in our deeds. That's what I want to focus on here in our deeds. Someone called into my show the other day and said later. How do I start these conversations about the election coming up here and someone else called in and said, I'll tell you what I do. I just put the ball in play. I'm standing in line somewhere at the grocery store or whatever and I just say, all right, who do you got? Kamala or Trump. I just put the ball in play. That's a deed. That's getting in the game. And it made me think, you know, we've heard this line our whole eyes. What are the two things you're not supposed to talk about in polite company? Whatever you do, don't talk about what? Politics or religion. And we wonder why
Starting point is 00:10:16 those are two of the most screwed up things in our country right now. But why are you not supposed to talk politics or religion? Why not? Oh, because it's awkward. This is who? Or more important, to whom is it awkward? It's really only awkward to that other guy. But why is it awkward to them? It's because they haven't thought through their position. They're not able to defend their positions. Therefore, it's awkward for them. Well, maybe they need to do better at defending their position. Maybe there's no better way to make that happen for them than to talk about it. We've been told for how many decades now that you should not talk about politics and religion because other people feel awkward about it. And that's worked for a long time. For a long time,
Starting point is 00:10:57 a lot of good people who have things that are important to be said have not said them because other people feel awkward about it. No more, no more. That ship has long sailed. So for the next 63 days, show your gratitude for this country in your deeds by putting the ball in play. And don't worry about it being awkward. Maybe those people who don't know what they think need to be confronted with why they feel awkward about it. But we can't be bothered by that. We got a country to save. More coming up.
