Coming up next, the news with Mike Slater.
Thank you, Bill.
It is Monday, September 23rd, 2024.
Here's what's happening today in America.
strike coming, a hit in Birmingham. Sheriff kills the judge and a chocolate bar for auction.
That's all coming up. Then Bill's going to be here with your message today. But first,
there's a threat of a strike from the International Longshoremen's Association, 45,000 dock workers
at 36 U.S. ports from Maine to Texas. They handle half of the country's imports. The deadline for
the new contract is October 1st. If there is a strike, the price of almost everything will go up.
The union wants higher wages and a total ban on the automation of cranes, gates, and container movements.
Four people were murdered, 18 injured.
In Birmingham, Alabama, there was a shooting in the party district part of town.
Detectives believed the shooting was not random.
And it was in the midst of a group of people outside on the sidewalk area.
Police believe they used a Glock switch, which is a little device that turns a semi-automatic Glock into an automatic firing weapon.
No description of the suspects yet.
This is the 133rd homicide in Birmingham this year.
Whitesburg, Kentucky, population 1,711, the county sheriff walked into the courthouse and shot a district judge.
He was the only judge in town, the only judge in the county.
And the sheriff is now behind bars.
No motive at the moment.
The town is shocked.
One woman who knew the sheriff said, if she saw the sheriff 10 times a day, there was always a hug.
He would always say, do you need anything?
If you need anything, call me.
Literally, no matter how many times I saw him in a day, it was always a hug.
hug. It was always those specific words that he would say. The closest that anyone has right now
to a motive is that a couple days before he murdered the judge, he was deposed in an ongoing
lawsuit about a former deputy who raped a woman in 2021. And the allegation is that the sheriff
did not appropriately investigate the accusations. But that's all anyone has at the moment for
any sort of motive. And the two actually ate lunch with each other hours before the sheriff killed
him. A bar of chocolate is going up for auction tomorrow. Why? What's old? 124 years old. The tin of chocolate
was sent by Private Charles Platts and the military in England to his wife. It was made by
Roundtree chocolate, which was bought by Nestle in 1988. Chocolate's expected to go for $1,000.
Which raises an interesting question, how old does food need to be before it's worth money?
Just got to hang on to that chocolate bar for 124 years. I'm Mike Slater from the
podcast, Politics by Faith. Bill O'Reilly has your message of the day. Next.

Time now for the O'Reilly Update, message of the day.
On this Monday, a bunch of letters came in asking whether Donald Trump has been helped
in the presidential race by the two.
attempted assassinations. I will say this. It's impossible to ascertain whether Trump has
been hurt or helped by this. You know that any kind of incident like this damages a person
inside. So I guess you can safely say that's true. Politically, here's what the reality is.
anyone running for higher office is not a person once they get into a race.
They are a caricature.
That means that voters, dissenters, supporters don't look at them as real people.
They're objects.
But once a person almost gets killed and then there's another heinous incident, that person becomes human, at least for
a little while. And that's what happened in Donald Trump. Now, you saw him at the Republican
Convention when he came out in the beginning of his speech. He was measured. He understood
the emotional impact, both on himself and on the country. This latest Florida thing is a little
bit more distant. Mr. Trump did not experience direct trauma. But I will tell you that many people
have taken a second look at the former president. And for him, that's a good thing. I'm Bill O'Reilly.
I approve the message by writing it. You can reach me. Bill at Bill o'Reilly.com,
Bill at Bill O'Reilly.com. Name in town, if you wish to opine. Now let's go to the mail.
John Messerschmith, Milkelville Hill, Quebec. All right. No.
This is Queensland. I can't even read here. Queensland, Australia.
There's with John. Mate. He's down in Queensland, Australia.
Refreshing to hear CNN political correspondent Scott Jennings,
disparaged Democrats on his own network by debunking the hate-Trump rhetoric.
Bill, I think your message to the corrupt media is making inroads.
I'm not sure it is. We've seen a little bit of a modification,
but it's still nasty as hell up here, John.
I don't know how it is in Australia, but I think you get a little raucous down there as well.
We have Brian Lewis, who's in Trinidad, Tobago.
I have never been.
I want to go because it's great diving in Trinidad, Tobago.
Here's John.
Democrats win in 24.
I predict overseas investors will withdraw billions of dollars.
Not a bad prediction because certainly overseas investors aren't going to want to pay an
enormous amount of tax on their investments here. But not a bad prediction. We have Greg, and I'm
going to scold Greg, so I'm not going to give the last name in Connecticut. I feel that Donald
Trump is the greater evil in our country. As a Catholic, I see him as more dangerous for our future
than a pro-abortion candidate. Okay, Greg, but it's not about you, is it? Is it? If you're a Catholic,
it's about the unborn. And trust me, they don't see, if they could see, Donald Trump is a
danger because they get born, many, many more of them under him than under Harris. Think about
that. I mean, that's a huge thing. Americans say, oh, abortion, yay, yay, yeah, reproductive rights,
just think of what it does. Think about it. In a moment, something you might not know.
Power, politics and the people behind the headlines.

world. Listen to Podforce One with me, Miranda Devine, every week on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or

you something you might not know. Donald Trump says he will not take part in another debate with
Kamala Harris after their exposition on ABC News earlier this month. Is this strategy wise? Maybe.
In my opinion, no one won the first debate. Both candidates look shaky at times, and it's hard
to predict how voters will process the display, even though the polls say that the vice president
did win the debate. As for Mr. Trump, he might consider Ronald Reagan's 1984 campaign
against Walter Mondale, which we chronicle in my new book confronting the president's.
Mr. Mondale waxed Reagan in the first debate.
The 73-year-old Republican appeared tired and confused.
Some journalists accused him of, quote, sleepwalking on live television.
Well, the appearance caused a new interest in the incumbents, mental acuity, and fitness for office.
Remember, Reagan had been shot shortly after he was inaugurated in 1981.
want. Now for the second debate, Ronald Reagan was prepared. He diffused questions about his health
with humor. I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit
for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience. If I still have time, I might add,
Mr. Truitt, I might add that it was Seneca or it was Cicero, I don't know which, that
said, if it was not for the elders correcting the mistakes of the young, there would be no
state. Reagan's performance in the second debate solidified his polling advantage. Two weeks after,
the Republican won the greatest electoral victory in American history, 525 to 13, Mondale
carrying only Minnesota and the District of Columbia. And here's something else. You might not know.
Despite his impressive performance, Ronald Reagan was beginning to,
suffer from mental decline during the 84 campaign. On November 5th, 1994, exactly 10 years after
his victory over Mondale, Reagan released a letter to the public, confirming his diagnosis
of Alzheimer's disease. Back after this.
