Discussion (0)
Starting point is 00:00:00 And we are going to be discussing all things, chills, thrills, and kills. Kate and I are going to be talking about our favorite books, TV shows, and movies that are in the thriller or crime fiction genre, as well as some reading habits and other items related to how we met on Bookstagram that will fit in with this podcast. So thank you so much for joining us. And we hope that you have fun and get totally terrified. Did you know that's what I'm wearing? Oh my gosh. I just saw the text. Oh my gosh. Okay. So for the listeners, not the viewers, he's wearing a killing the T sweatshirt that I sent him last.
Starting point is 00:00:44 So it was like around Christmas. But what's trippy is I was just looking at some of our older like reels for like to see which ones I hadn't posted on like TikTok. Yeah. And one of the ones that I looked at like the most recently was one of the one of the ones. where I was wearing the pink one that I have like that. So I was just like, oh my gosh, I'm so excited for it to be cold enough to wear that again. And now you're wearing it. I know. It's like actually cold here. Like, and I'm loving it. But I'm like, oh my God. Like I cannot wait to wear this. Yeah. It's such a, those are really good. So it's called giant hoodies. Anyone who like us loves really comfy clothing. What I like about them is it's kind of like just like it's between. a shirt and a sweat shirt, like in terms of weight. Yeah. And that's like a big win for me. But there's also just like huge. So thus the name giant hoodies. So this winter I would just like cuddle up and one and read all the time. Oh my God. I love this thing. I love this thing so much. They're great.
Starting point is 00:01:52 I was like, well, you know what my problem is? Is like I have this rule in my closet. like anything very special. Like not just like, oh, I love this, but like something very, very special to me. I will not fold and put in my closet. It has to be hung up. Yeah. So that was the problem is this was hung up. And I was like, oh my God, I saw it today.
Starting point is 00:02:17 And I was like imagining like this with like a denim jacket over it and black joggers. Yes. Because I'm all about like an all black outfit with like a jean jacket. Yes. It's my jam With you. I'm blocked out today. But yeah, I know it's called giant hoodies.
Starting point is 00:02:36 Do they make crunecks as well? They don't because I would have gotten a crew neck if it was possible. I'm a sucker for a cronick. Yeah, I prefer it. I just love the material. I know. I like how it's like it's just so thin but not totally T-shirt thin. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:57 I will say, though, for somebody who does, does prefer crew neck over hoodie. Yes. Like I get like super soft things from like Abercrombie and like other companies. And I feel like the hood is always very heavy. But this is very light. Like I don't even know it back there. It's like a mullet.
Starting point is 00:03:14 Like you don't know it's back there. Yes. Because that's what I was about to say is like sometimes hoodies, the hoods feel like turtlenecks and get restrictive. And that's why I don't like them. And I agree. That one just kind of long for the ride. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:28 Yeah. I mean like I could literally like if I was outside and Augusta wind came up it would just be like flowing like my personal ponytail. Yeah. Like a veil. I have the books that you sent me. So we actually both have. I got them yesterday.
Starting point is 00:03:43 We both have gifts technically from each other in this podcast. But now I can't remember where I put them, but they're back there. And Tyler brought the mail in and he was like, you guys have the same handwriting. And he was like, I thought you sent yourself something. And I was like, why did Kate? send herself something. Oh my God. And I think yours is actually like prettier than mine.
Starting point is 00:04:05 So I just took it as a compliment. But apparently we kind of have the same handwriting. Okay. That means actually our handwriting is more similar than you think because my handwriting is only prettier because I have gone to mail things out before. And they're like, we can't read this address. So like I write a lot like nicer when I mail things out. But like my everyday handwriting is a little bit.
Starting point is 00:04:28 messier. That makes sense. And I just, I'm the same way because I hardly write, like, I'm on the computer so much that like, I don't even write that often. And I have run into that where I'm like, okay, I'm going to write very clearly right now. Yeah, yeah. I'm like so old school that like I still write myself post-it notes, like, oh, nice. Whether I'm working or like whatever it is. But I also write in a planner, like, oh, yeah. For everything in my life. Otherwise, I'll be like, what the fuck am I doing? Well, see, that all of this tracks because you also like real books and real paper. And I'm just a digital girly over here.
Starting point is 00:05:09 Becky, Becky. Yeah, and I'm techie Becky. Yeah. I can't remember if we've told the listeners that or if that's new for them, but that's my new nickname. I'm just the old school homo. Old school and homo together is like, like, I never expected to hear. So you have an icebreaker and I do too. I do. We both too.
Starting point is 00:05:36 I'm excited. I want to hear yours. So last week I talked about TV shows and basically I really had been watching TV much at all. I'd really only been reading. But as you and I have discussed, one, I'm trying to be a little pickier about which books I request. Yes. So that I can read books. that I like really, really enjoy. But I was also like, I mean, it's kind of nice to watch TV sometimes.
Starting point is 00:06:04 So kind of in the last couple of months, I think I've watched some more TV. And then I just remembered a show that I still didn't go back and watch. And I was wondering if you have a show that you're like, this is what I'm dying to watch next when I like have the time. I legit am concerned with how much you're in my head. Oh my gosh. Like, okay. Icebreaker. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:31 Well, no. It's not my icebreaker, but like, it's one of the, okay, so yesterday I was reading, I was thinking about who I wanted to cast in a book. And there is a man. Yes, as I do. There's a man in the show Only Murders in the Building, who I think is very, very, very, very, very, very attractive. And I'm trying to find his name right now. But basically, Oh, his name is Ryan Broussard. He's in Only Murders in the Building. But he is in, I looked him up yesterday, and he is in another show called Alert on Fox. And it's like, it seems like it's going to be like a SVU kind of thing where basically it's about two detectives who work in a missing persons unit. and each episode they investigate a different missing persons,
Starting point is 00:07:33 but the whole season, they're also trying to find their missing son. Whoa. So I was like, how have I not heard of this show? What's going on? Like, I read that, like, the first season's done.
Starting point is 00:07:46 They renewed it for a second season. And I, like, saw Mr. Hoddy, sexy hottie man in it. And I was like, all of these things point to the fact that I need to watch it. So, like, that was my goal. Like, when we get done tonight, recording, I'm going to start that show. Oh, that's so exciting. So that's why I'm like, why are you in my head?
Starting point is 00:08:06 That's been happening a lot again in the last week or two. Yeah. Yeah. Insane. That's fun. I'm excited for you. He is definitely hot. He is so fucking hot.
Starting point is 00:08:17 He's very attractive. He's so hot. I'm like obsessed. Every time he comes on the screen and like only murders in the building, I'm like, God I love him. Hello again. Hello, you. But yeah, that's my show.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Is there one for you? Yes. So what I just remember, I remembered earlier today that I still haven't watched Yellowjacket season two. That was the other thing kind of on my like. Yeah. And we talked about that kind of when I was like watching hijack and something else. I was like, I have a bunch of shows to watch. And then I thought I was done with them.
Starting point is 00:08:55 But I do have Yellow Jacket season two. and the bear season two now that I think about it. I have the bear season one in season two. It's, I'm trying to think, I'm just blanking. I can't tell if you'll love the first season or not, is what I'm saying. And I've heard a lot of people, like, I generally enjoyed it, but I don't know what I would tell you you would love about it. So I won't say this on the podcast, but that's why I blinked. Honestly, even if the show were only Jeremy Allen White, like cooking with his biceps out, I would watch it.
Starting point is 00:09:39 It is. That's most of it. So you're right. I'm good. I'm good. And I also have that one. And they are in like 30 minute episodes. So. Yeah. I also, well, I loved shameless. Like, I loved shameless. I never finished it. But I loved what I watched. I loved it. But I also really need to watch. I should probably make a lot. list. I really want to watch the one with Tom Holland that the crowded room. Because Emmy Rossum is that what made you think of it? Oh, is she in it? Yeah, Amy Rossum is Tom Holland's mom. Okay, I love that. Well, Amanda Safereads in it, right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So I definitely want to watch that. It's really, really good. You are going to love how emotionally bleak it is. That's what you're going to just eat.
Starting point is 00:10:29 up about it. He's still my heart. Yeah. He's still my heart. I love that. Yeah. It was really good. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:43 I feel like there's definitely a lot I want to watch. But then I just sometimes I find myself like when I've had like a really long day. I just find myself like so like kind of like literally like brain dead like full of brain fog. I can't really put a lot of, like, thinking into what I'm watching. So I could have watched all of these shows in the time that I've spent watching old episodes of Catfish. That's your priority right now. It's okay. I love, I mean, obviously, I love, like, true crime stuff, but some of it, like, you said, gets really bleak when you know that it happened, like, it really happened to someone.
Starting point is 00:11:29 Yeah. So, but the thing is, is I find people investigating internet crimes so interesting. So you like Taiki Beckys. Yeah. Like, I just think it's like so, like that, um, that documentary, like, don't, don't fuck with cat people. Yes, don't fuck with cats. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Like literally I was like, holy shit, this is crazy, but it was very weak. So I feel like catfish is like, because there was one documentary about a girl who like, had met a boy her age online, so she thought. And she was abducted by this man who was like much, much older than her. And like there was a murder suicide situation. And like you found out that like at one point, like her and her friend were having a sleepover. And they heard a noise and they like thought that they were being like silly, scared teenage girls. But like really it was he was in the house.
Starting point is 00:12:29 and had left instead of abducting her that night. So they get very bleak. Yeah. You know, like, and I can't listen to something like that again. So, yeah. Catfish is like, there's always, you know, a twist or a reveal. Like, is it the person or is it not? So it's like got the mystery and it's people like investigating like internet crimes,
Starting point is 00:12:53 but it's like nobody is murdered. Yeah. Yeah. So I'm just like, cat. like catfish is like my drug of choice. That's a really, really good point about why it works for you. Yeah. I like that.
Starting point is 00:13:06 Yeah. And I only watch the gay one. There you go. Even more reason that it works for you. I just like literally only watch the one where it's like. I mean, you just thinking what you want to watch. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:26 But, but yeah, that's that. TV shows and obviously I'm going to be watching a ton of scary movies because it's like officially spooky season. But this feels like an old school killing the tea episode. It does. Because we're going to be talking about the TV shows we want to watch that we hopefully fingers crossed love. And now we're going to dive into some books. Yeah. And I'll say.
Starting point is 00:13:58 I'm going to do... Okay. You're going to... Whatever we came up for the name of. Mine at the end. Because mine's like related to books, so I feel like it'll flow. And once we get going, I can't wait to hear your answer because I've been thinking about this for four days now. Oh my gosh.
Starting point is 00:14:19 Like, I was like, I think this would be a really fun icebreaker. But I've been thinking about how... I've been thinking about your answer, but I also... also like one of my favorite things about you in the extremely long list of things that I love about you is how passionate you get about certain things that you enjoy talking about. Yes. So that's why like I'm like toward the end, it would be perfect. Oh my gosh.
Starting point is 00:14:47 I'm so excited for the ice closer. The ice closer. Yeah. Yeah. The ice pick. Yes. That's more on brand. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:01 But yeah. So in typical, like, old school killing the tea fashion, we're going to do a little segment about books. And we're just going to do like no topic really other than like our last current and next reads. So instead of being like here's, you know, a bunch of stuff that we have already read, we're going to be talking about things that are currently happening in our. bookish lives. Yes.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Because we recently had an unofficial. Buddy read. Buddy read. I will send book club, but it was a book club too. I mean, you know, we can call it whatever we want. It's only two people to vote. Right.
Starting point is 00:15:49 But yeah, we had an unofficial buddy read, and I think it was pretty fun. It was so crazy. I started, I can't even remember exactly how it happened, but like I had been busy. I hadn't been like talking to you about like, oh, I just finished this and I'm starting something next. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:06 And so I started something. I started R.J. Jacobs's book, this is how we end things one morning. And then we were texting about something else. And I was like, I just started this. And you're like, oh, my God, I'm about to start it. So we just linked up without even talking about it. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:24 And the funny thing is, too, is I remember it was. like, I know it was a Sunday evening when you had texted me that like you had just started. And I was like, I'm literally just starting this now. And the weird thing is, is that like Murphy recently got neutered. Yes. So he was a lot last week. And like I, over the weekend, he was just really like needy. And there was a lot of attention I had to give to him. And so I was like, the funny thing is, is we literally would have started it at the same time if Murphy wasn't so needy because I planned on starting it Sunday morning.
Starting point is 00:17:03 Oh, wow. So I was like, this is so fucking synced and like scary. Like it's just scary. But it was so good. I really, really enjoyed it. So fun. Fast paced.
Starting point is 00:17:16 Storm. Dark academia. Yes. The pacing is amazing. And well, and I guess some people have not read the description, but it's about five grad students who are working with like, you know, the typical enigmatic psychology professor who wants to do a study on deceitfulness and
Starting point is 00:17:40 like how people lie and what causes them to lie. And then one of their experiments goes a little weird. And then one of them ends up dead. And as Gere mentioned, there's a huge blizzard coming in to campus. And basically the whole time, everyone's trying to figure out who did it and who's next if anyone is next. Yeah. So good. Yeah. So good.
Starting point is 00:18:14 The pacing is just it like just keeps going. And it also specifically reminded me of Jamie Lynn Hendricks. It could be anyone. the way there are like lots of points of POVs and like just the way that everything keeps moving. It really reminded me of reading that book. Yeah. I think if you took like Janie Lynn Hendrix's latest and you took like one of the 90s like teen slasher's. Yeah. It would be because I mean, okay, I listen, I love the book. But like let's be honest, like if it was really happening, what are the chances that like
Starting point is 00:18:55 murder hits rate as a storm's coming in So it's kind of like one of those things where there's like a lot of like things going on that like make it a very enjoyable read but like there's a storm coming there's like a big cast multiple POV like one of those things where like you wonder if someone else is going to be next if so who is it and yeah
Starting point is 00:19:17 everything's kind of happening at once but like yeah if you took that like pacing of Jamie Lynn Hendricks and you combined it with like a 90s teen slasher like urban legends or something. Yes. That's what, yeah, yeah. But it's perfect for fall. It's so good. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:36 There were so many references to people being cold. I loved it. I love like, especially well now that I work from home, but like I love the whole like anticipating a storm. Mm-hmm. and like last minute errands and like making sure you have like snacks and food, you know, and all that good stuff. And then just like waiting for it to come. And that's kind of what I felt like. Yeah. There were like a lot of things of like people being in their homes, cozy, warm and like a fucking disastrous blizzard outside is like.
Starting point is 00:20:17 It's good for the soul. Yes. Yes. Yes. So before that, what was the last thing that you read or in between? Yes. So before that, I read Like a Sister by Kelly Garrett, which is one that you recommended to me a really long time ago.
Starting point is 00:20:39 And then I just finally got to it. And I really, really, really enjoyed it. I love the voice of the whole book. Like, it was just. super fun. I'm pulling up the synopsis because I don't want to spoil anything here as I discuss what happens in it. But a reality TV star is found dead. And her half sister who hasn't talked to her for years, I can't remember how many years, just doesn't believe that the way that she died was an overdose. That's not a spoiler.
Starting point is 00:21:20 She doesn't think he was an overdose and she feels like someone murdered her. So basically it is our main character, Lena, is who. Lena is trying to figure all of that out. And it amidst like the reality world, amidst their shared dad who's a hip-hop mogul. his new wife, all kinds of shady stuff. And she's trying to figure out what really happened to her half-sister that she hasn't talked to him forever.
Starting point is 00:22:00 But it's so snarky and pretty fast-paced and just it was very fun. I still need to read it. I thought you had read it. I didn't say anything to you about it, right? No. Okay, I didn't think I did. I probably like told you like, oh my God, this sounds so great. I can't wait to read it.
Starting point is 00:22:19 But one of the things is, is I would have read it already. I can't find it. I know I have it because I would have read it already. But when I went to order a copy, I'm obsessed with the paperback cover. So I had to wait for it to be out in paperback. And then I bought it. Oh, nice. Which one is that?
Starting point is 00:22:41 It's like a lot more. I think the hard cover is like black and red. Yes. Okay. And then. Yeah, the pink. one. Yes. I love that one. That's what my Kindle version was. Yeah. So I was like, ooh, I need to wait for this. I need to wait for this. But I do like that. I really, really,
Starting point is 00:23:00 really am looking forward to it. It's just one of those things where like when I have a moment to read something that's a backlist. Yeah. That's what kind of happened for me. Yeah. Which might happen for me this month, actually. I think that I might have figured things out that I could read it this month. So then we'll have more to talk. about. Oh my gosh. I know. Always. Oh my God. I just can't wait because I heard amazing things about it. And she's so nice. I had shared something on Instagram where I bought a copy of her book. And like she was like, thank you so much for like, you know, picking up a copy. She's like, I really, really hope that you like it. But like, you know, if you don't, please don't let me know, like something to that effect.
Starting point is 00:23:42 And I was like, oh my God, little angel. Like I just hate that people. have to be like, listen, I hope you love my book. But like, if you don't, like, please be, like, sensitive of my feelings. I know. I just think it's so messed up that people, like, actively tell somebody they don't like their book. I know. I agree. Ugh.
Starting point is 00:24:01 My God. But. Yeah. It sounds really good. I just don't feel the need to. I just talk about things I like. Same. Same.
Starting point is 00:24:09 It's more fun. There are so many books out there that did not work for me that, like, other people will love. So I don't want to ever be that person that's influencing. and that's influencing somebody to not pick up something. Right. I agree. Same. But my last one, oh, my God, was a fucking banger.
Starting point is 00:24:32 Both of us. Yeah. The taken ones by Jess Lowry. Oh, my God. So it's like. We haven't talked about it since you finished it. So I'm excited. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:24:43 So good. So, so, so good. There was so much going on. I love... Did I request it? I love that there's... I love that there's... How do I say this?
Starting point is 00:24:57 I love that you can tell it's the beginning of a series because there's something that's like referenced throughout the book that like... Yes. ...isn't necessarily like
Starting point is 00:25:05 tied up with a bow that like I'm sure will be featured in the next one. Yeah. Yep, I know what you mean. But this one is basically like in the summer of 1980 three girls go into
Starting point is 00:25:19 the woods and only one comes out. And she like, no memory. They don't know what happened to the other two girls like nothing. So then summer 2020, there is a cold case detective named Van Reed and a forensic scientist named Harry Steinbeck that are assigned to a homicide in which a woman is buried alive. And when they get her body out of there, they find one of those halves of a
Starting point is 00:25:53 friendship necklace that one of the girls owned who had went missing in the woods in 1980. I love that setup. Oh my God. So creepy. So they're trying to like
Starting point is 00:26:05 kind of solve this woman's case and also see like how it could be connected to like what happened in the 80s and like, you know, go from there. But it's like, the setting is just so creepy because you have these woods and there's like, I don't think
Starting point is 00:26:24 this is a spoiler. But there's obviously like every town that has a fucking forest in it, there's mention of like urban legends and like creepy shit that happens and folklore and, you know, like there's like police procedural and like a current homicide with. a cold case and everything that makes a thriller or something that like you just don't want to put down his feature in this book.
Starting point is 00:26:50 Yeah, that's what it sounds like. The writing is fantastic. Yeah. I still haven't read any of her books. Oh my God. I think you would absolutely fucking devour all of time. I know. I want to read some more of them this fall. I love this one. Unspeakable Fangs is so good.
Starting point is 00:27:08 It's so good. It's got like a little bit of like a stranger things vibe without being supernatural. Nice. You will scream at the top of your lungs when you read the Quarry Girls. I even have that one
Starting point is 00:27:24 because I think I got it for Kindle like an early read or whatever. Yeah. I think that'll be your favorite of hers because it deals with things that you like to scream about. Well, I need to push that to the top of my list too then.
Starting point is 00:27:42 Yeah, yeah. And I'll read Kelly Garrett. Yeah. Oh my gosh. It was so good. So fun. Yeah. So that is... Those are our last reads. Yeah. So what are you currently reading? So right now I am reading a... It's not really an arc. But it's a book that comes out January of 2024 by Audra McLeigh. And it is on Good. reads so you can go save it, even though it's that far out. I don't know why I said all of that, but for some reason, it felt like relevant information. We love to give people things to
Starting point is 00:28:22 anticipate. Right. But it is so good. I also beta read another book she wrote a couple, like a month ago or so. And she is just one of my all-time faves. So this is me saying that like she's solidified into my favorites with this third one that I've read. One little word is her first one that is out that people can read. But if you see me is about a woman named Leighton Marks who is taken at a festival right in front of her loved ones. And the police are pretty convinced that it's a trafficker that took her is where like where they're like leads seem to be taking them. Right. But her husband and her kind of on and off again, best friend, Marnie, are both like, I don't think that's what happened.
Starting point is 00:29:18 So then Marnie meets a girl named Sarah who says she saw something at the festival, but what she says doesn't quite add up. And so Marnie kind of tries to get more out of Sarah but can't. And so Marnie continues to try to figure out what's happening. and the more that she investigates, she starts receiving, like, escalating threats. So worse and worse stuff keeps being threatened and worse and worse stuff is happening to her. And so now Marnie is like, I really love my friend, but someone is trying to ruin my life for trying to find her. And that is the gist of it. And what I will say is I just got to like 65% and she just blew my mind.
Starting point is 00:30:08 So I was like paying very close attention to that synopsis because this is one of those books where like that is the setup. But then so many things happen after the fact. So I was like I can't say anything. Oh, fuck. That sounds incredible. It is so good. She is like a master of suspense. Like her books are so suspenseful.
Starting point is 00:30:30 And I feel like her character. I was trying to explain it to you earlier. Like I just feel like her characters feel so real that that's why. why I feel like so immediately immersed in everything I read from her. So definitely add that to everybody's list for... I am being inspired. Okay. Nice.
Starting point is 00:30:49 Her book, one little word, is on Pango right now. Oh, nice. So I'm going to order it. You will really, really enjoy it, I believe. I think this would be your favorite of hers, but you're going to enjoy that one a lot. I'm going to get this one, and then I'm going to order the paper. paperback of what's it called? If you see me.
Starting point is 00:31:12 If you see me. Mm-hmm. January 2nd, 2004. Yeah, January 2nd. Done. Done and done. Yeah, it sounds incredible. But I just, we love to support.
Starting point is 00:31:28 Yeah. Because I debated talking about it this early, but I'm like, she's going to want people to know about it. And if it's not, I think that's why I said the Goodreads part. If it's on Goodreads, like people can go. Yeah. add it to their two reads. So I was like, fuck it. I did. I did. I definitely did. I just added it to mine good reads. And you know something is good when I actually pick up my phone while
Starting point is 00:31:51 we're recording because usually I'm like, it's like face down. But like you were talking like you were like saying it and like in the time you've talked about her, I already ordered her first book and added her second one to my like, you know. I love that. But yeah, if you're looking for twisty, but you want something a little spicy, spicy. I'm reading say my name by Ashley James.
Starting point is 00:32:21 Okay, so this is just, the synopsis on Goodreads is not like, it doesn't really tell you what it's about. So I'm just going to give you like the gist of what it's about to the effect of like, if there are minor spoilers in this, it would only be in
Starting point is 00:32:40 like the first like 50 pages. Yeah, I get that. Say My Name is a very fucking spicy male male romance in which a man named Travis has a very tumultuous relationship with
Starting point is 00:32:58 his boyfriend. Like the toxicity of their relationship throughout college and in their early 20s has like filtered into their adult lives. And Travis comes home one day and finds his boyfriend getting like banged the fuck out in their bed by another dude. And he's like, what the fuck?
Starting point is 00:33:21 You've got to be kidding me. So needless to say, Travis dumps his boyfriend and moves into a new apartment. And when he arrives at his new apartment to move in, his neighbor is none other than the man that was banging his boyfriend. Mateo. Yeah. Like, I did not read. So I love Ashley James.
Starting point is 00:33:47 Her, like, trilogy that she wrote about, oh my God, the Hidden Affairs trilogy is, like, one of my favorite, like, series of male-male romances. But so, like, this, like, I was like, she has a new book coming out. I'm going to order it and read it and just buy it. I had no idea what it was about when I was about. I started reading it.
Starting point is 00:34:07 So I am just, it's so good and I cannot put it down. And it's like, we're both like addicted to our books right now. Oh my God. I just like don't even like, like, it's funny because we were just talking about like all the TV shows that we want to watch and like, I'm like,
Starting point is 00:34:28 fuck yeah. Like I want to like start this new show. Yeah. When we're done tonight. And then I'm like, maybe I'll start it tomorrow. like I kind of want to read tonight now but yeah it's just so good it's very
Starting point is 00:34:40 steamy it's a little angsty Mateo might be like my huge like your new book boyfriend book boyfriend oh my god an emphasis on huge that's all I'll say
Starting point is 00:34:55 oh my god what a dream you're like You're just going to be, you're going to get stuck in a comfort rereading of this book is what you're saying. I could see it. Yeah. Yeah. I could see it.
Starting point is 00:35:14 There's like so many male male romances I want to read right now. But like there are like a few where I'm like, I want to read that again. And I think this is going to be one of them. I think this is going to be one of them. That's awesome. She has like a trilogy that she wrote a while back, not like that long, but I have a have read it yet. So like once I have once I finish this one like her next book comes out October 27th. Nice. And I'm like, you know, I'll read that trilogy in between. But actually James is a fucking
Starting point is 00:35:50 force to be reckoned with when it comes to like having a pacing that's like a thriller and like a romance and all that good stuff. She's amazing. That's perfect. Yeah. So. I love it. Go, Ashley. Go, Ashley. So, with the weekend coming up, what is next on the agenda?
Starting point is 00:36:17 Well, this one is a little bit out of left field, but I saw on TikTok that the other black girl, the TV show, just started airing. Obviously, why can't I think of it? Adaptation. So I kind of think I'm going to read the book So then I can watch the TV show and have an opinion on it
Starting point is 00:36:41 Oh my God, she's such a good storyteller Have you read? Did you read this one? Nice. Okay, that's, I'm really happy to hear that. It reads like, did you read that? Is it called when no one is watching? I don't think I did. No, I didn't.
Starting point is 00:37:02 You should read that. I think you would like that too. But basically they have this way of telling a story that like reminds me of like Jordan Peel movies. Like it's just like this very unsettling vibe. Oh my God. Even when like things aren't happening, they just have like this way of making you feel extremely like on edge. Just like knowing that something's happened. And I can't even like put into work.
Starting point is 00:37:32 Like, it's like magic. Jordan Peel movie. That's awesome. It's just like the way that she writes the other black girl is like nothing like I've ever read. Oh my gosh. I'm even more excited to read it now. Like it's very cinematic when you're reading it. So I'm excited to watch the show.
Starting point is 00:37:52 Yeah. And it also is like, you know how like a Jordan Peel movie is? Like it's just like you feel like on edge and you feel kind of like anxious even when people People are just, like, eating a hot dog. And, like, you don't know why you feel so uncomfortable. But, like, that's how her writing is. So, like, the way that she's able to, like, find her way in your head and be like, I'm going to make you feel like anxious as fuck.
Starting point is 00:38:18 Right up my alley. Good. So good. Well, if people don't know what it's about, I'm probably just going to read the synopsis since I haven't read it. Yeah. But 26-year-old editorial assistant, Nella, Rogers is tired of being the only black employee at Wagner Books.
Starting point is 00:38:36 Fed up with the isolation and microaggressions, she's thrilled when Harlem-born and bred Hazel starts working in the cubicle beside hers. They've only just started comparing natural hair care regimens, though, when a string of uncomfortable events elevates Hazel to office, darling, and Nella is left in the dust. Then the notes begin to appear on Nella's desk. Leave Wagner now. It's hard to believe Hazel is behind the hostile mess. messages, but as Nella starts to spiral and obsess over the sinister forces at play, she soon
Starting point is 00:39:09 realizes that there's a lot more at stake than just her career. That does sound anxiety producing. That is beautiful. The, what is that? It's one of my favorite book covers. Yeah. But yeah, that's so good. Oh my gosh. I will never give up that book. I'm even more pumped to read this now. Yeah. I think you'll really like it. And I think. that you'll really like when no one is watching by Alyssa Cole. Yes, I need to add that one. I don't want to say what it's about because I don't want to spoil anything, but... Yeah. But it's all my want to read. Oh yeah, so you already know about it.
Starting point is 00:39:51 Nice. I do remember seeing this cover. It's a cool cover. Yeah, they're both their covers are amazing. And I guess I have a segue now. I love it So for what Zakiah Delilah Harris does with Jordan Peel I am hoping my next read does with
Starting point is 00:40:15 Scream and Halloween because shout out to my friend Shelley who was like you need to read this we need to read this I just hear I just heard Murphy
Starting point is 00:40:30 whining outside my door he's developing separation anxiety so he like winds outside of our doors if like nobody's home which oh my god he's so cute you're like somebody is home I'm like I'll be out on a sucker so it says this for fans of Halloween
Starting point is 00:40:48 and scream and it's the first in a series the book is called Bleed by Emerald O'Brien um uh... in the quiet town of Auburn Hills, a man in a skull mask forces a father to watch as his daughter is murdered,
Starting point is 00:41:12 only to be granted the twisted reprieve of his own death when a witness calls for help. The sadistic killer escapes and the grief-stricken father gives his statement before admitting himself to a mental hospital. One month later, Fox Deliner is eager to celebrate, her Halloween traditions with her cousin, but after a disturbing experience
Starting point is 00:41:34 at work, she can't shake the eerie feeling of being watched. On edge, she hopes for safety in numbers as she and her cousin attend a Halloween party with a group of their misfit friends. However, all bets are off when the inconsolable father is spotted leaving the hospital and the witness is reported missing.
Starting point is 00:41:50 As the night progresses, unsettling event pushes Fox's paranoia to the limits. I mean, I'd be paranoid as fuck. me too. It sounds so fucking good. I'm like so pumped. Yeah. So pumped. Because it kind of like one of my favorite
Starting point is 00:42:08 like scary movies that's been out in like a while is called Hellfest. And it has one of the most like not like gory disturbing, but like one of the most psychologically disturbing endings I've ever seen to any movie. And it's about a group of friends who go to this like Halloween like. like six flags, horror fest kind of thing. And there is a man in there who is actually like a murderer. So they're in this like huge theme park. And like you know how like the Halloween style theme parks are where like there's a girl running and then there's like an actor that's chasing her and like.
Starting point is 00:42:48 So they see like that kind of thing. And they're like, yeah, like get her, get her. And like they don't know. Like get her. Like it's really like a killer. Yeah. Or like some of the dead bodies hanging up that you think are like dummies are not dummies. No shit.
Starting point is 00:43:06 It's such a good fucking movie. The main actress is Amy Forsyth, I believe her name is. And like she will definitely make everybody who is attracted to men feel their bisexual side. Like I was like, she is amazing. That's a glowing endorsement. She is such a good actress. She is such a good actress. I was like, oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:43:33 Yeah. So that hopefully bleed kind of gives off. Like, it sounds like it's going to be very similar to Hellfest, but. Yeah. Wow. That is what I'm going to read this again. Oh, Hellfest, the other. Is that a second?
Starting point is 00:43:46 Is there a second one? Or am I looking at the wrong thing? I might be looking at the wrong thing. Healthest is the movie. It says there's a second one, but I think I'm looking at the wrong thing. I think, I don't know. Let me look. it pulled up something called Hellfest the Other.
Starting point is 00:44:09 If there's a sequel to this movie, I will lose my shit. No, I don't know what the other is. Oh, so the movie, the movie Hellfest. Yeah, I just found that. Hell. Oh, yeah, she's beautiful. Amy Forsyth, oh my God, wait until you see her acting. There is one part in the movie that I'm like,
Starting point is 00:44:31 that is like some of the best acting I have ever seen in my entire fucking life. Wow. Yeah. You've seen a lot of acting. I am obsessed with the scene as scary and creepy as it is I will find myself rewinding it just because her performance is brilliant
Starting point is 00:44:47 Wow Yeah yeah I think she's fucking incredibly talented I love her Love her love her And it's like spooky season I'll probably watch the movie tonight I'm gonna do so many things tonight I'm gonna do so many things
Starting point is 00:45:03 I'm gonna do so many things But yeah So yeah, that's what is coming up for us. It's on our radar. You ready for your ice pick? I am. So. I'm ready for an ice pick.
Starting point is 00:45:17 This can be in any genre as well of books. But have you noticed a trend lately that you hope never leaves whatever genre you love? Okay, that's a good one. Like, I feel like after a gone girl. it was like the missing life. Yeah, I know. You know what I mean? But like, is there like one right now that you like is like kind of like a trope or a plot device that you just hope never like leaves?
Starting point is 00:45:48 I do think I have noticed. I like the like what is this call? It's called like anti-establishment type story. So where like your outsider is going in to break up, whether it's like a. cult or a family that acts like a cult or like I do I like the like underdog going in and breaking up something powerful. I love that. I thought you were going to say Hollywood glam in storyline.
Starting point is 00:46:28 I know. I was torn between those two. That's what I was like thinking about for like the past like four days. I was like I remember she was going to get like super. passionate about like Evelyn Hugo and Kitty Carr and like the Hurricane Blonde. Yes. But yeah, I definitely see where like...
Starting point is 00:46:44 I was torn between those two. Yeah. Because I do. I love that. I love it in all genres. Yeah. I think mine is like people authors. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:59 You're Robert and Joe Schmo. I think like mine is authors who are kind of focusing more on victims than serial killers and like writing stories that are loosely based off true crimes like yeah Catherine Ryan Howard did it phenomenally in the nothing man and in the trap um you know Meg Gardner does it amazing in her unsub series and like with the upcoming bright young women by Jessica Noel. Like,
Starting point is 00:47:34 yes. It's something that like people writing books that are inspired by these stories, but like kind of, you know, giving it their own twist on things. Yeah. I think is like so brilliant and so refreshing. And when it's done right, it's like fucking beyond incredible. Yeah, I agree. And it makes me research stuff that I like,
Starting point is 00:48:00 didn't know about. Dude, oh, my God. So, you know, like, the movie, when a stranger calls? Yes. Like, there's a remake of it. That's super corny from, like, the early 2000s. Like, it's PG-13. It's, like, cinematically, like, camera-wise and, like, setting.
Starting point is 00:48:19 It's, like, really, like, cool to watch. But it's not very scary. And I watched it, and I was like, oh, like, this is, like, a comfort watch for me. And then, like, I read some of the cases that, inspired them to make the movie and scared the shit out of myself. Like, I don't think I fell asleep until 4 o'clock in the morning. Oh, my God. I bet.
Starting point is 00:48:38 And so, like, when I research things now, I'm like, let me be careful. During the daytime. Yes. That's a good thing, a good standard to live by. Yeah. I mean, we can end on that. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:58 So check us out next week, little fuckers.
