Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to Bente Vista episode 116. I'm Andrew and I'm currently in a car roaring along a Mad Max style dystopian outback desert. Frankly it's dusty-obeying outback desert. Frankly it's dusty. It's messing up my sinuses. I'm hunting around for people to make slaves out of and I will extract things from their tear glands that I can then distill down into a little bottle and use it as a kind of saline spray to help out with my nose here, because I'm not enjoying it. Sitting next to me in the passenger seat, fiddling with the radio, which does not work and hasn't worked for decades, it's been.. Hi. Hi. Hi. Hi. Hi. Hi. Hi. Hi. Hi. Hi. I. I. I. I. I. I. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to, I. to, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to make out. to make. to make. to make. to make. to make. to make. to make. to make. to make. to make. to to to to to to to to to the, the, the, the, the, thea. the the the the the thea'a'a'a'a'a' sa'a'a'a'a' to to to to to to to the passenger seat, fiddling with the radio which does not work and has not worked for decades, it's Ben.
Starting point is 00:01:09 Hi Ben. Well, I mean if, you know, we're moving around and if I try all the different bands, maybe we'll get something. Maybe this will be the day that we'll get something. A.M's a shorter range, isn't it, Theo? No, AM's a longer range. Oh, no, all, all, all, all, all, all, all, all, all, all, all, all, th, th, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. tha. tha. tha. tha. tha. tha. tha. thi. tha. tha. tha. tha. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. tha. tha. tha. tha. tha. t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t tha. tha. ththe, I? No, AM's a longer range. Oh, no, all right, so we're looking for AM then. So we're looking for... Yeah, you want AM.
Starting point is 00:01:28 In the kind of post-apocalyptic dystopian future, you really want that short wave radio. It kind of bounces off the troposphere, it gets absorbed less by particulate matter. That's really what you're after. And I think, I know I haven't been introduced yet, but hey, I think I'm really bringing that to the table in this scenario. That's why we keep you chained up in the back of the Gintlethal's gone. You know what, all of the things you just said, that's exactly what I was thinking as well. I also know smart stuff and like I knew about the troposphere as well. So yeah I don't like to throw in people's faces though. Yeah, you know I'm glad you had a chance to showboat but I also particulates and stuff so. I'm honestly just happy to be here, chained up.
Starting point is 00:02:22 One, just one request. I know you guys were very hungry. That's fine. My left leg was probably my least used leg. Just saying that leaves me with just one leg to move on. And if you take that one, it's going to be more difficult for you guys to transport me from our base dug into the mountains, into the car and around when we go raiding for me to give you advice and that sort of thing. At the moment I can still hop from place to place, I can get in and out of the car. You know, if you want to stop chaining me up, that'd be great as well. But I'm just saying that if you want to eat something, maybe not my arms or legs or any of the rest of my body, kind of saturated
Starting point is 00:03:08 as far as being eaten at the moment. I probably wasn't going to take you out of the cage. I mean now that you're in the cage, the cage is where you live. Also all of that appeal had the very same energy to me as that Max Laverne tweet that hey guy's to jail got ask where is the exit? Oh dear. Yes the troposphere I believe that's what they call the area surrounding and containing the city of Brisbane. And also I think the scenario you just described is 2020. Yes 2020 Queens area. The far future of 2020. Nari you just described is 2020? Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:03:46 2020 queens-it. The far future. Far future. Hmm. How's it going up there, fellas? How's it looking? How's it smelling? It's not great.
Starting point is 00:03:55 I've got to tell you. I've got to tell you. I'm smelling burnt toast. Uh-oh. Might be not connected to the conditions. No, it's a, so every single thing around Brisbane but not Brisbane has been on fire for a week now. So we've got a lovely haze. Theo, did you happen to see the moon last night?
Starting point is 00:04:16 I did not. So it was a beautiful, maybe just past a full moon, but a striking... Even more than full? Yes, that's exactly how it works. It was one full sphere, and then just a little tiny sliver of an extra one to the right of it. We had a 105% moon. It was a striking orange, reddish color, because we were black-blanketed in a thick smoke. Hmm. Would you discover it as a blood moon?
Starting point is 00:04:47 Um, no. It was more of a piss moon. What color is your piss? Depends. Yeah, it depends how much gatorade I've been drinking. Fair enough. Actually, does anybody else drink Baraka on a regular basis? No. No.
Starting point is 00:05:05 No. Get a lot of vitamins that way, but it also makes your piss absolutely radioactive looking. Makes it look like Mountain Dew. I don't want that. I don't want tasty looking piss. You're Mountain Dew the tastiest looking radioactive drink. It's just overcoming, you never meant to see Mountain Jew outside of a, like you never meant to see it in a cup because it's a colored plastic bottle, right? I wonder if they made it the color that it is on
Starting point is 00:05:36 purpose, but then on reflection they were like actually this is kind of terrifying. This sucks. Let's put it in a green bottle. Yeah, just so that someone looks it and they're like oh it's a green the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. thin thin thin th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th. tho. tho. tho. thi. thi. thou. thou. thou. thou. thou. thou. thou. thou. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. the the t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. t. te. te. te. te. te. te. t. the t. the t. This sucks. Let's put it in a green bottle. Yeah, just so that someone looks it. And they're like, oh, it's a green bottle with a soft drink inside. And then you put it in a clear glass, and then you're like, hey, what the fuck? What the fuck? There is nothing in nature that is that color, that is not also distinctterrifying predator. Yeah it's just poisonous Amazonian frogs and
Starting point is 00:06:05 nothing else. Warning you not to lick them. What is Mountain Chew? What flavor is Mountain Chew? Describe it in like... Isn't it meant be like a lime flavored? Is that what that is? I don't think so. Well, number one I would say it's meant to taste like the dew from the mountaintop, truly. No. Nectar of the gods. A mountain's dew? Yep, correct. This is what Prometheus brought down, I believe.
Starting point is 00:06:35 Let me see. I can't even begin to kind of figure out what it might actually be intended to be. It's implacable, isn't it? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah? I? I? th? th? th, I? th, I? th, I? th, I? th, I? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No? No. I. I? No. I? No. I? No. I? No. I? No. I? No. I? No. I? No. I? No. I? No. I? No. I? No. I? No? No. I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I? I, I, I, I, I, I thi. I thi. I t t t t t t t t t thi. I thi. I thi. I thi. I thi. I might actually be intended to be. It's implacable, isn't it? Yeah, because I mean, like you could absolutely tell me oh it's meant to be like a lemon lime type thing or whatever and I wouldn't believe you. I would just say no. No. There's a radioactive piss. Godzilla's piss is the flavor of Mountain Dew. Drainings from the Snowton murder barrels, I think. Hmm.
Starting point is 00:07:13 But fizzy. And refreshing. Yeah. No, I, I, I, citrus flavored and caffeinated in most markets. Caffinated? What? Yeah, baby! This is the thing about the states that I think a lot of Australians don't understand is that like, because in Australia the things that are caffeinated are coales and like
Starting point is 00:07:36 energy drinks. Yeah, you're brown juices. Yeah. So what a lot of people don't know I think is that like a lot of just regular soft drinks in the states are caffeinated, like Mountain Dew and Sprite and shit? Geez, a sprite is caffeinated. Sprite is caffeinated? What? Well, maybe I'm wrong.
Starting point is 00:07:58 No. No. Oh, caffeine free. Um, but there's, well, but Mountain Dews caffeinated. I knew that. That's very fucked up. It's not even brown. It's not even brown.
Starting point is 00:08:12 Hmm. Um, but yeah, so, fires. Hmm. Speaking of fucked up, um, yeah, no, things have not been great here, I think over the last week or so. There's been several days where it's, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, to. to. to. to. to, uh, uh, to, to, uh, to, uh, uh, to, uh, to, to, to, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, to, to, to, to, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, here I think over the last week or so there's been several days where it's been extremely hazy and sort of just like walking through the city breathing in the smoke and like oh you know I'm no climatologist man but perhaps something's wrong here and then like you know I get home that day after you know breathing in smoke all day and the that that tha and th wrong here. And then like, you know, I get home that day after,
Starting point is 00:08:47 you know, breathing in smoke all day and feeling really great about the world. And I look it up and it turns out, Binaburah Lodge, which is a historic kind of like rainforest lodge, where Caitlin and I had, you know, being, we went there for like a night or two last week, it's this old lodge, it's been there for very, very long, and it had burnt down. So as I'm kind of like walking through the city, I'm literally breathing in the smoke
Starting point is 00:09:19 of my dead memories, which I think is really cool. I think that's a fun thing to think about and do, as an experience to go well well well well well well well well well well well well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, that, that, that that that, that, that's that. I think that's a fun thing to think about and do, and experience to go, well, that thing, that time that we spent, that's now literally up in smoke. Turned to Ash. And it's not, it's not just there, you know, I think, you know, throughout like Stanthorpe and, what was the place near Stanthop that got really hard hit Ben? It starts with the tea. Oh, that's a good question. I mean, that whole area kind of went up, but there was, from Balandine, which is right on the border up to Applethorpe, up to Stanthorpe out around there, which is where Mum lives, which is great, which is, which is, which is the border up to Applethorpe up to Stanthorpe out around there which
Starting point is 00:10:05 is where mom lives which is great because I oh sorry Tentafield is where you think it's tentafield yeah yeah yeah so tentfield which is down in New South Wales yes I called my mom on the night that the fires kind of the the fire has kind of started because the I know in the early afternoon there I saw a the the. I the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the tend. tend. tend. tend. tend. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. t, in the early afternoon there, I saw a couple of fire service tweets go up being like, hey, these places have been put on notice that they might have to leave. And then in the, you know, 20 minutes that took me to call my mom, Stanthorpe had been upgraded to evacuate now, and she and her partner had already had to leave their property because it was currently on fire, which is pretty fucking their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their property because it was currently on fire, which is pretty fucking terrifying, but luckily for them, the whole back half of their property went up, but it didn't cross,
Starting point is 00:10:51 they've got two dams behind where the house is and didn't get into the house, but all the fences burnt down, all the trees in the backyard are gone. They basically just have to spend an entire night sitting awake using the two pumps for each dam powered by a generator to put out spot fires so they could stop any embers that came across and ignited anything near their house, which is probably a pretty fucking terrifying experience. And yeah, those fires are fucking everywhere at the moment, like all throughout Queensland. Like the total firebans areas in Queensland on the 12th last week were the entire North Queensland the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th the total fire ban areas in Queensland on the 12th last week
Starting point is 00:11:27 were the entire North Queensland fire region. Then Ipswich, Somerset, the Lockheed Valley, the Scenic Rim, Logan, the Gold Coast, Brisbane, the Morton Bay Area, Redland Bay Area, Central Highlands, Wyrunder, Gladstone, Livingston, Rockhampton, Bunderberg, North Burnett, Sherbourne, South Burnett, Fraser Coast, Gippie, Sunshine Coast, Noosa, like everywhere. Every single place this state was on fire. And all of summer is going to be like this. It is hot, it is dry, we're getting strong. Westerly's, normally, the fire Cedison has started earlier. They had a shorter time to do controlled burns because we didn't the th th th th the th th th th th th th th, such th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, such th, such th, such th, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, thu-s, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, the the the the the their the sun, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, the sun, the sun, the sun, thu, thu, thu, thu, th. G, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thu, thu, thu, thu, to to thu, to be to be to be to be to be to be to be their, their, their, has started earlier. They had a shorter time to do controlled burns because we didn't get much rain over winter. Rainforests are on fucking fire because they haven't had any rainfall either.
Starting point is 00:12:13 So like Binaburro, which is around Beachmont. That's in the Gold Coast Hintland. That's all rain forest, and that went up like a fucking tinderbox because it's been so fucking dry. And just to check we are in summer right now, correct? I'm not, I don't have a great perception of time. I think it might actually be the early days of spring. Like the tail end of winter. Yes, yeah that's certainly true. Yeah, that's not true. And then so this is going to go until probably about February or March next year. So that's cool. And also the Queensland Fire Service was under resource to deal with the fires last year and it already looks like we're in for a worse fire season this year.
Starting point is 00:12:57 So that's even cooler. It sounds like a bad time actually. A recipe for disaster. I could criticize your conclusions there. So a friend of mine who works as an area manager for the National Park Service here, who's basically 90% of their job is fire management, and they're just, his assessment is they're kind of fucked. They just, they have less and less time to do the control burns that they're kind of fucked. They just, they have less and less time to do the
Starting point is 00:13:29 controlled burns that they need to do to keep stuff in position and because things are so fucked they also face a lot of public criticism anytime they have to do controlled burns because they've really got to do gambles on which times they can actually do them because they're necessary but because things are so fuckedthem because they're necessary, but because things are so fucked right now, people see fires, the Park Service gets a lot of criticism. It's getting very very hard for them to do their job, they're not really getting the extra funding that they need. It's, it sounds pretty
Starting point is 00:13:58 shithouse. All the weird pyramaniacs out there are like, oh, so they can start fires. But I can't start a fire. Oh, I mean, it was the Perigian fires, I believe, that were started by a bunch of kids, which is fun because the rest of the state was already on fire from, I think, just sort of natural bushfires, and then, yeah, that's a whole other thing. Hmm. Some screenshots of some text message of conversations floating around in those news stories of people being like, fuck you, cunt, I didn't start the fires cut. And someone else be like, I know you did cut. It's very Queensland. Extremely Queensland. That's, I mean, that is very much like, that's, and I might actually find these because they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they that is very much like that's, I might actually find these because they are,
Starting point is 00:14:46 uh... Get fucked, you get, I didn't do shit. They are amazing. Oh my goodness. Well, fortunately, we're being led by, you know, some smart people, you know, the real brains trust we got going on. You know? We're very proud of our government. Yeah. What sort of reassuring things are we getting in the wake of this kind of news, Thea? Hey Andrew, check this out. Did you know that?
Starting point is 00:15:15 Uh, did you know that the Pacific Islands are actually fine because coral assholes float? Did you know that? Well, you know me, I love science. Real amateur science guy. Got my beakers, my bunsen burners, my lab coat, I'm holding them up and swirling things around. And I love science and I love facts. So that's great news to me.
Starting point is 00:15:40 And I'm so glad to be freed of the kind of lefty thought bubble and get a dose of reality from MP Craig Kelly, who we've talked about on the show before, I think is one of the most credulous shitheads on the face of the planet, let alone in our government. And he's told a Monarchist dinner that the Commonwealth Nation of Tuvalu is floating, not sinking, in comments that could reignite tensions with Australia's Pacific neighbours just weeks after a major diplomatic incident. So you know how islands, you know, you picture an island, right? Sort of like a little bit of land, jutting out of the ocean, but we don't really
Starting point is 00:16:24 know what's underneath, I think, from a scientific standpoint. I think that's actually explored in the documentary film What Lies Beneath. I have to check that out. But no, I think, and correct me if I've got the wrong impression here, that Craig Kelly actually believes that an island is like something that's not directly attached to the earth's crust. What? So he's thinking coral atolls. So it's a bunch of coral that's become stuck together and it's just floating on the surface.
Starting point is 00:17:05 That's his belief. That's his belief. So I think, let's check it out. So he's accused the ABC of covering up crucial information about climate change to suit its green left agenda. So this is after a major diplomatic incident in which the deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormick said Pacific Islanders would survive climate change because they pick our fruit. Which, yep. And then Fiji's Prime Minister said the Prime Minister, our Prime
Starting point is 00:17:39 Minister Scott Morrison had been very insulting and condescending during the leaders retreat, so on and so forth. But Mr. Kelly repeated his claim that that too-evalu thi is the the climate is thi thi to thi, because thi is thi is thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi the the the the climate the climate the climate the climate the climate the climate the climate the climate the climate the climate the climate, because thi, because the climate climate, because thi-c-c-c-ci, the climate climate climate climate climate climate climate climate climate climate climate climate climate climate climate climate climate climate climate, because because because because because because because because because because because, because, because, because, because, because th. thi is thi is thi is thi is thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi thi thi the climate, the climate, the climate, the climate, to to the climate, the climate, their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their ci. their ci. their ci. their ci. their ci. the condescending during the leaders retreat, so on and so forth. But Mr. Kelly repeated his claim that Tuvalu is actually increasing us in size rather than sinking due to rising sea levels. We'll come back to that, but it's a coral atoll, even though you've had a slight sea level rise, a coral atoll actually floats on the ocean, and yet we're not told that by the ABC. That's true. I th th th th th th th, I I I I I I I I I thi I thi thi we're not told that by the ABC. That's true. I've never been told that by the ABC. You know what I have been told about floating atolls by? The movie Water World. Hmm. That's true. In the film water world, famously depicting
Starting point is 00:18:23 a world of water. How did they get there again? Oh, would you believe it? Although I have to say in Waterworld it's not a coral at all, I believe it's constructed of some very madmax rusty metal. So it could, it could work, different nets and jumps for jet skis to do and cool stuff that would make a good theme park ride. Well, not really a ride more of an entertainment experience. I don't think I've seen Waterworld. Really? I've seen the bit where he drinks his piss. Wow, that's kind of the best bit of the movie. I don't know if this is a
Starting point is 00:19:01 entirely true, but it's probably close to the truth. I believe that the Waterworld, like, is it a movie world, the Waterworld show? Yeah, one of those, it might, I think it's like the longest continuously running one they've ever done. And it's for a movie that like no one is seen or remembered, but also I'm pretty sure they have like a water world one and a police academy one. There is a police academy one. Isn't there a lethal weapon one as well? Well, there's lethal weapon ride. Which was my favorite roller coaster at movie world. Um, after these scooby-do spooky coaster, which was a wonderful time as well. Very under-a-spoo! I don't know what was called the Spooky Coaster.
Starting point is 00:19:45 Oh. But to look to get on the Spooky Coaster, you have to line up and watch a bunch of promotional materials for the movie Scooby-Doo, which came out like 40 years ago? Was it for the sequel that had Rowan Atkins in it or the first movie. I can't even remember. Sign note, Outcast wrote an original song for the soundtrack of one of those movies called The Land of a Million drums and it fucking whips. That song is a dead set banger. Learning so much about culture to that. Seek that out. Land of a million drums, Outcast, and I challenge you not to have a good time. Speaking of Craig Kelly, the massive fuck up machine. So he's had this one of saying,
Starting point is 00:20:32 actually your island is floating so you don't need to worry. But he's had a long history of just massive fuck up, some of which we've discussed on the show. I don't think, however, that we've ever discussed the one from 2014, where he gave a speech at a Croatian community event, and he gave this speech on the 10th of April, or in fact he gave his speech conveying Prime Minister Tony Abbott's best wishes at a community event in Sydney commemorating April 10th or the foundation date of a pro-Nazi Croatian government in the 1940s. And he did this standing in front of like a big, I'm gonna pronounce this incorrectly, but like a big Ustashi flag, which was, yeah,
Starting point is 00:21:27 for a fascist pro-Nazi government in World War II. So he's extremely good at basically just rolling up and saying the absolute dumbest thing possible that you could say in any place or at any time. But it's actually, um, we're actually the fools here, Andrew, because the ABC, and this is the ABC that won't tell you what Craig Kelly wants you to know, uh, but the ABC fact checking unit with the RMIT has previously examined Mr. Kelly's claims about Tuvalu and found them to be accurate. Now, I want to kind of just, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, the, the, uh, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the about Tuvalu and found them to be accurate. Now, I want to kind of just define what's happening here. Is this one of these great ones where they go, well technically in this particular semantic
Starting point is 00:22:16 interpretation? No, so they're examining the claim that Tuvalu is getting bigger and it has by 72 hectares I think. So what happens as C, as C kind of moves around. I'm sorry I'm sorry but just before we move on from that. Liberal MP Craig Kelly, this is from 2018, this is from 2018, Liberal MP Craig Kelly has offered a quote unreserved apology to the families of MH 17 victims for suggesting that the world overlook the atrocity. A day after the fourth anniversary of the massacre, Mr. Kelly said Russian involvement should
Starting point is 00:22:52 be quote, slightly looked over in order to improve world relations. Wonderful, what a brain genius. Just a really clever guy. Mm-hmm. Anyway, so Tuvalu is getting bigger, as sort of soil is pushed around, you know, shut the fuck up, crow. You know, things kind of...
Starting point is 00:23:16 It's what you get for getting a pet crow. I told you not to get a pet crow. I don't think it's a pet. All the time his tiny lizard brain is that they actually float, right? And I think this like describes one of the dumbest angles from like conservatives that they can only picture the effects of climate change in like terms of sea level rise. So all they can kind of do is look at a map and kind of go well, you know, or they'll look
Starting point is 00:23:55 at a photo and in the distance there'll be water and they'll go like, look, the water hasn't overtaken this house yet and therefore, you know, it's everything's fine. And we saw like Ted Cruz try and go in on Beido O'Rourke recently for saying like El Paso's going to go to shit. And he said, you know, guess what? El Paso's landlocked, so basically it's fine despite the fact that, you know, the article that he was, or the news thing that he was actually was actually was actually was actually, that he was actually, that he was actually, that he was actually, th.. th., th, th, th, thi was actually, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, like, like, like, thi, thi, th. And, th. And, th. And, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, thi, like, thi, like, like, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. the fact that you know the the article that he was or the the news thing that he was actually quoting the Chiron you know is talking about extreme heat effects and all this sort of stuff so yeah
Starting point is 00:24:33 it'll be 55 degrees all year round yeah it's fine but it's still above water right which is the only way because because we've been talking about things in terms of sea rise, that's the only thing that they can grasp as being difficult, right? And I think it's also how you wind up with conservatives trying to do the absolutely ridiculous twisting around of things to say like, oh yeah, but all these people will have their value increase in property when the water rises and their house is closer to the beach. Because what people will want, so picturing a world where, in the conservative mindset where the sea level rise is, you know, meters and meters, they, that overtakes all of the existing coastal houses, there's now a new coast, and what people are really going to do, to do, is, the, their, and, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their house, and their, and their house, and their house, and their, and their, and their, and their house, and their house, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their their their their house, and their house, and their house, of the existing coastal houses there's now a new
Starting point is 00:25:27 coast and what people are really going to want to do is buy those houses on the on the new coast where water is continually rising and has overtaken the previous ones like oh yeah and then you're gonna be like oh sweet I want one of the good spots yeah oh that's exactly like when you start a long-term relationship with someone who was cheating with someone else when they started dating you. And you go, ah, they got all the cheating out of their system. Now it is done and I am safe forever. It's my favorite is people, people who start a relationship with a person who was cheating on their partner
Starting point is 00:26:06 with them. Then that's how they got together in the first place. Yeah, and it's like, ah, yeah, he finally left his husband. And now, to get married. Yes. Oh boy, do I have personal experience with that? Oh my goodness. Not me.
Starting point is 00:26:23 Theo will cheat on anyone. I think I may actually be physically incapable of cheating and I mean that in the most literal sense. I think my entire body would crumple with the stress of the idea. You'd just be doing like the teener groans that is backing out of the room. Wife of the show, my wife and I have discussed this previously and we've both agreed. Like no, there's no chance of that ever, ever occurring. So good, good trust.
Starting point is 00:26:54 You just start nervously shaking so much you phase between the atoms of the floor. Oh boy. Anyway, so basically we're all idiots for getting this hopelessly wrong. The same research paper cited by Mr Kelly also declares climate change is one of the single greatest environmental threats to the livelihood and well-being of the peoples of the Pacific. Yeah, it's cool how they just kind of just skirt around those bits. And this reminds me a lot of what H. Bomberman was going on. He did a wonderful climate video. If you haven't seen it, do that.
Starting point is 00:27:35 He goes through all of the right wing grifters. He's talking about Stephen Crowder and then you cite in the one time that they brought up, you know, the Greenland Glacier and the reduction in volume and all that sort of stuff is when there was an uptick, right? But when you go and look at it, it's a seasonal uptick because what happens is there's different temperatures through the years, some of the glacier refreezes over winter and then more of it melts away in summer. But he's just zoomed in on the little uptick on the line and gone, you know, this is what NASA won't tell you about even though this is actually, this data is actually sourced from NASA, so without ever trying to approach the larger context.
Starting point is 00:28:25 And that's cool. And why would you? And why would you? I mean, he's got the same kind of shit with, you know, trying to dunk on Prince Harry and Megan Megan Markle, where, you know, Prince Harry's saying a lot about climate change. Apparently I blank out whenever Royals are mentioned, but get this, he flies everywhere so he's basically a huge hypocrite.
Starting point is 00:28:54 And he said, mate, get on a plane and fly where you want and don't apologize about it. Which one of the things do you want to happen? I don't understand. That's right, you're saying that things are bad, but you're also doing the things in society that are easiest for us to get from place to place because we don't have a better option. So more fool you. This of course is all very similar to people like losing their minds about Greta. Greta Thunberg taking a boat.
Starting point is 00:29:27 And they're like, oh, not everybody can afford to buy their own yacht. Yes, that's the point. And it's like, even though she is doing the literal thing that they want for her not to be a hypocrite, they will still twist themselves into pretzels to, you know, criticize her for it, because this is the world where we live, where the easy option is also the option that will destroy the planet and our ability to live on it. Well in their defense, pretzels are delicious. That's so true. That's true. Eating my delicious logic pretzels.
Starting point is 00:30:04 Can I just backtrack on something very briefly? And I promise this will be very brief. Are you gonna... Do you remember the part in the podcast earlier where I mentioned the song, Land of a Million Drums by the band Outcast? Mm-hmm. What did you learn and have to revise in your own brain? Well, what I learned in making sure that I hadn't been wrong about it being an original song for the score of the first live-action Scooby-Doo film, which it was that I probably should have had more confidence in that because most of the lyrics are about Scooby-Doo is that is not just by outcast,
Starting point is 00:30:38 it's by outcast and killer Mike. Oh hell yeah! Yeah so I thought Theo that might appeal directly to me. Think-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-fi-fi-fi-fi-fi-fi-fi-fi-fi-fi-fi-fix-fix-fix-fix-fix-fix-fix-fix-fix-coo-coo-a-coo-coo-coo-coo-coo-s, the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th-cou, th-s, th-s, th-s, thi-s, thi-s-s-s-s-s, tho-s, tho'-coo'-s'-coo-scoo-scoo-scoo-scoo-scoo-scoo-scoo-scoo-scoo-scoo-s, I thought Theo, that might appeal to you especially. That does appeal directly to me. Think about it. A thin-fi-time mic head. So again, kind of concentration to the show, please, I urge you, pause this show. Google Outcast, Killer Mike, land for a million drums. Chuck it on, you'll have a great time. You probably don't don't to don't to to think to think to tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, that, that, kind, kind, kind, kind the the the that, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind their, kind their, kind kind their, kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, kind, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, thin, to to to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to great time. You probably don't need to put Killer Mike in there. I mean, as far as typing goes, you can just...
Starting point is 00:31:06 You can probably just put in Land of a Million drums. I'm not telling people how to use Google, Theo. But if you'd like to know how to use Google, we will run extensive workshops just for you. First of all, one-on-one workshops. It doesn't politely. May I please listen to the song, Land of Billion Drums, by Outcast featuring Killer Mike. Thank you very much. We got a, I'm sure I've mentioned this, I got like a free Google Home mini from Google. They were like, thank you for being a treasured customer and
Starting point is 00:31:40 also we would love to hear what you were talking about. We would love to spy on you. Yeah. And I said, you know what? Fine. Welcome to my home. Google, also all of the other devices that you're probably listening to me on. And Google absolutely responds differently depending on how polite you are to it. Really? Yes. Yes. I mean, I've never heard the other option because I'm always exceedingly polite to. Fine. Fine. Fine. Fine. to, fine. to, fine. to, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, fine, to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to it. Really? Yes. Yes. I mean I've never heard the other option because I'm always exceedingly polite too. You were like, uh, okay, Google, can I please, uh, no, you know what?
Starting point is 00:32:13 Actually, I do it, but I'm sorry. I didn't meet. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. And then you walk out of the room. And then you lie down for a little while. But Google has inferred my query and brought up the Wikipedia page for all of the different star life cycles. And it's there waiting for me when I get back. It is. But yes, it tells jokes, it does all of that shit. And if you say, Google, you're so funny and it goes, I'm not funny, I'm hilarious. And you go, fuck off, you fucking, robot, robot.
Starting point is 00:32:53 I mean, I do, yeah. Pick up a Google home today, use promo code, Buntavista. Oh, dear. So, um, so Tuvalu is floating, and that is great because it means that if it's in our area and we're copping flack over it, we can just get like a barge pole and just kind of push it, push it out towards like one of the other countries. Yeah. And then it can be their problem. Yeah. Maybe you want to pack a jacket while you're out there. Hmm. All going great and you know it's good. It's it's in. It's in. It's in. It's it's in. It's it's in. It's it's that it's that it's that it's that it's that it's good. It's good. It's good. It's good. It's good. It's good. It's good. It's good. It's good. It's good. It's good. All going great and you know it's it's good that the Liberal Party can just
Starting point is 00:33:31 rely on the science that they get from the one scientist they can find who says everything's fine. That seems to generally be the deal for when it comes to climate science is that like most people are kind of on the same page yep then there's a couple that aren't it's like we'd better listen to these guys who are saying let's not bother picking up our trash who's who's this Peter Ridd guy the what's his deal Peter Ridd was actually if you're I think maybe some Australians will actually remember that this is a guy that claimed he was being censored by JCU, the James Cook University up in Townsville. Oh yeah. And actually successfully sued them recently for unfair dismissal.
Starting point is 00:34:20 It's all very weird. JCU claims they never actually made any claims for him to like, you know, shut the fuck up about his crank science or whatever. It was all just like, hey, maybe you can stop leaking all of our internal communications directly to the Australian please or else he'll be fired. And then yeah he successfully sued them for 1.2 million dollars. It's all a very strange situation, but the conservative media love talking to this guy. They love talking to Dr. Peter Ridd because he thinks everything is fine and that we're all just making a big deal out of nothing at all. Everything's fine
Starting point is 00:35:12 and just shut up about it already. Yep, so I don't know if you guys saw recently but the reef health has been recently downgraded by the GBR MPA from poor to very poor, with particular concern about runoff on onshore reef areas. But what he's done is he's actually gone out to an area where there was recently a large kind of long-term comparison performed. And this is Stone Island, which is near Bowen, I believe. And they did, this previous scientific group did a bunch of comparisons with photos available in the late 19th century to the present and gone, hey, all of this stuff has died. And that's not bad, and we don't like that.
Starting point is 00:36:08 And maybe we should do something about that. But wouldn't you know, the IPA got involved? Holy cow, there's some gross. And they've kicked in some money to say, hey, maybe it's not also bad. And they've funded what the Australian describes as reef science outsiders, Peter Ridd and Jennifer Marrahasey to go and check it down. Of course we know the words reef science outsiders to mean crank. There's a person who is a crank and and not a real person.
Starting point is 00:36:42 And what they've found is that that's all bullshit because while, yeah, I can look on all that coral, all that cold's dead, it's been there for probably, you know, I think the reef age is about 10,000 years. Probably big, it's probably a big coincidence that absolutely since the Industrial Revolution, since the settling of Australia by Australians, our farming practices, etc. all this reef has died. But if you go 30 meters to the south of this, there's actually some coral that's still alive. Oh, well, cool.
Starting point is 00:37:19 So what's the big deal? So they're over there looking at all the dead coal. And imagine you're looking at a tree, right? And it's full of cherries. Oh, hell yeah, baby. Yeah, right? You want to pick that delicious cherry. And so they've, they've done the natural thing, they've done a little bit of cherry picking. And they've said, look, don't, just avert your eyes, right? Like, I know you might be like calling the police because you're being murdered right now, but all of your neighbors are alive? And also, you might be dead, but they're still going. And hey, hey, hey, just have a cherry, you know?
Starting point is 00:38:02 Have this delicious... Enjoy this delicious ripe cherry. I've, th, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, th, like, like, like, th, like, like, th, like, th, thi, like, thi, thi, like, like, like, like, like, like, thi, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, like, th. th. th, the, the, the, the, like, the, like, the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. the this delicious cherry. Enjoy this delicious ripe cherry. I picked this cherry for you and this cherry is perfect. Uh-huh. Why would you look at any other cherry? It's right. Or anything else that's not a cherry? Just look at this goddab cherry. Over there, there's another cherry you can pick where there's 100% coral cover stretching over 25 hectares. And what we saw was not consistent with the proposition that the inshore reefs have been destroyed by farm runoff. And he said, weirdly, the findings were at odds with those of Dr. Clark and her team,
Starting point is 00:38:35 this being the previous study. Lots of people around Bowen who get very angry when people say, all their coral is wiped out. How would people in Sydney feel if everyone was saying that the water in Sydney Harbour had turned brown from pollution? The bridge was rusting scrap and the opera house was a crumbling ruin. People in Sydney can't feel because their dopamine receptors have all been destroyed by abusing recreational drugs that their parents pay for. That's right. I'll have to do them at home now now, the their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, to be, to be, to be, to be, to be, to be, to be, their, to be, to be, to be, to, to be, to be, to be, to, to be, to, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is, is their. And, is their. And, is their. And, is their their their to. We. We's toe. Wea, toe. Wea, too, their, to. Wea, to. to. to. to. their, to. Wethem at home now because you're not allowed to go out anymore. And I also do believe the
Starting point is 00:39:08 Sydney Harbor Bridge to be rusting scrap as well. Well also this makes me go like mmm yeah I would love to go and drink a big glass of water from the Sydney Harbor. Slip slap. Delicious. Well um... Absolutely delicious. I believe they call it the dumb bridge juice. God damn it. God damn it. Oh so um now Peter Ridd makes another appearance in this article from the Australian entitled Reports of the Great Barrier Reef's doom are exaggerated by Graham Lloyd, Environment Editor. Graham Lloyd also did this article.
Starting point is 00:39:47 Oh good. Yep, and a bunch of the other ones. I'm glad that we don't have mainstream propaganda outlets for the government in this country. It's cool. So, this was a whole thing that happened recently when Federal Environment Minister Susan Leigh went to the happened recently when federal environment minister Susan Lay Went to the great barrier reef to inspect it up I love doing it. Don't they I love getting out my big magnifying glass And looking closely at the ocean. Yeah, and declaring things to be good or bad?
Starting point is 00:40:20 Hey nerd what are you looking at in that markerscope get out of the way. I'm gonna have a look down your nerd vision. Looking down the nerd tube. Don't say it to me. A larger version of some nerd stuff. So, so she went down there and had a tour. She had a bit of a sticky peek. So, um, on her first official visit to the Great Barrier Reef, Leigh said she found it difficult to reconcile what she saw in the water with what had been said around the world, when
Starting point is 00:40:51 she snorkeled over two reefs off cans. The reef is not dead, was her appraisal. It is not dying. I would not even say it is on life support. Tourism operators won a very clear message that the reef is definitely not dead, that it is amazing and one and one and one and one to and one to to to to to to to to to to to to to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the very clear message that the reef is definitely not dead, that it is amazing and one of the true wonders of the world and is worth visiting. Having seen it for myself, I can certainly endorse that. That is a really clear message that I want people to hear. Now, maybe the operative part of this is, Tourism operators want me to send a very clear
Starting point is 00:41:23 message. I wonder if perhaps the very frequent reports that we are killing the Great Barrier Reef with coal mine runoff and rising ocean temperatures is putting any people off going to see it, in which case there's only one solution, and that is simply to tell people that it's not the case. Everything's fine. Now there's the this is our favorite part of any article written by a conservative outlet and that is the single sentence that is that is thrown in a purely symbolic manner just to symbolize the idea that you are you know hearing both sides as they love to do. You got to hear both both sides! so! there's! th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th th th th th th th th th th th th i. So, th i. So, thi's! thi's! thi's. So, thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's is fine's is fine's is thi's is thi's is thi's is thi's is thi's is thi's is thi's is thi's is thi's is thi's is thi's thi's thi's thi's thi's the thi's the thi's thi's thi's thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi the thi the thi thi thi the thi thi the the thi's the idea that you are, you know, hearing both sides as they love to do. You gotta hear both sides! So here's this one little sentence dropped into the middle of this article.
Starting point is 00:42:12 The results of first-hand observations from two snorkels may not meet the test of scientific rigor. Full stop. Full stop. But along the Queensland coast, there is a pushback that challenges the now familiar message of the reef's doom. A lecture tour by controversial marine scientist Peter Ridd. He he. Controversial, as we think, controversial doing a nice placeholder for, quack, in that one. A lecture tour by controversial marine scientist Peter Ridd has attracted hundreds
Starting point is 00:42:42 of people and is only halfway through a program that stretches throughout the sugar cane centers from Bundervurg to Kans. The tour has been promoted by the sugar cane and other agriculture industries that face the prospect of strict new regulations under a reef water quality bill before state parliament. Huh. So it's almost like you were describing to us in this same article the very same capitalistic motivation that these people have for promoting tours tours tours tours tours tours tours tours tours tours tours tours to to to to to to to to to to tou to tou tou to tou to tou to tou to tou. their to to tour their tour. to to to to to their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their to to to to to to to to to to to thea. thea. thea. thea. thea. tour. tour. tour. tour. tour. tour. tour. tour. tour. tour. tour. tour. tour. tour. tour. tour. tour. tour. t us in the same article the very same capitalistic motivation that these people have for promoting tours that get people to come down and say, no, it's fine, it's fine, don't worry about looking at it, don't worry about thinking about
Starting point is 00:43:15 it too hard. Now I've heard, I've heard the gigantic humming monolith in the desert as turning people inside out. Starting point is 00:43:57 nails, Ben, and you can't deny that. So, so many nails. So I, similarly, Andrew, I did a quick search for the term Great Barrier Reef on the Australian and I looked through one page of results before I absolutely lost my mind. There was one article referring to the study where the reef health was downgraded. You know, this is the mainstream scientific opinion backed by, by peer review, backed by,, backed by stuff that you can literally just go and look up in any, if you've got access to a university. Like if you're a student or you want to talk to somebody at a university, you can just go and look at the body of evidence. You can just go and look it up. You can go and search for it,
Starting point is 00:44:42 you can see who wrote it, where it's quoted, all of the data involved, actually read about it, but what they would like you to know though, outside of that one article is every single other article on there about how it's bullshit or how it's hard for farmers to deal with the increased scrutiny, possible laws that may come out of this, and it's almost as if they don't give a single shit. That's just one man's take. Just one man's opinion.
Starting point is 00:45:17 So, as you alluded to, Theo, this is a thing that different conservative politicians really love, which is you get a whole raft of scientific evidence from researchers, from universities, from like independent environmental bodies, and you say, yeah, I guess, but you know what I'd really seal this for me is if I get down there and have a gander, if I um strap on the old looking goggles, if I have a little sticky big down there. Yeah, Pauline Hanson, uh, one nation's Pauline Hanson's one nation's Pauline Hanson got in a plane and flew over it and said, looks fine. It looks fine to me, she said. She would know. Yeah. Yeah, and what, what can you honestly? And, what, to to to to to to to to to take, take, take, take, take, take, take, take, take, take, take, take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take take the the the the the this. Starting point is 00:46:17 sort of flying over something, like 10,000 feet and just having a little glance out of the window? Well, I mean, it certainly wouldn't just be, you know, corroborating your own internal biases. No. And, you know, like how, how is all of the, all these words on paper, you know, how are they supposed to discount what I have seen with my own eyes, which is that there is an ocean, and there is some stuff in that ocean? If I can't believe my own eyes, what can I believe???. the the the the the the the the th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi to be to be toe toe toeee an internal biases. thi thi toeeei thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi th is an ocean and there is some stuff in that ocean. If I can't believe my own eyes, what can I believe? The voices that call you to Titan. It's true, you can and should believe them. Get on the rocket, go to Titan.
Starting point is 00:46:55 So many different pitches at once. So many different voices. All speaking as one. And it's not terrifying and you should go there. Go to Titan. Go to Titan! Just get on the rocket, come on the rocket. The evidence from Peter Ridd suggests that you should get on the rocket and go to Titan.
Starting point is 00:47:17 True. Hmm. So, yeah, I'm loving, I'm loving all of the, hey, I just, I went and had a peep. And that's kind of to to to to to to to to to to to to th of th of th of thi thi that's thi that's that's thi that's thi that's kind of that's kind of thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi titan. go go thi titan. Starting point is 00:47:42 uh... and david little proud the national disasters, is on the case. He took a question last week from The Guardian in which he was asked, this is the question, parts of Queensland that are not expected to burn, are now burning. The overall fire index, fire danger index has increased for most of southern Australia over the past 40 years, and the Bushfire and Natural Haz its cooperative research center says the trend is expected to continue. It says the frequency of really bad fire days like those on ash Wednesday or black Saturday will increase. It says we need to prepare for that. Given that
Starting point is 00:48:16 expert advice, why step around the human contribution to climate change as the minister did yesterday on the ABC by arguing whether climate changes man-made or not is irrelevant. Now he gave an answer and the answer was, I don't know if climate change is man-made. I'm about practical outcomes. I'm about doing not thinking. Whether that's about having a cleaner environment or giving farmers and emergency services the right tools to adapt. To adapt to what? Hey. Let's not get into that. I'm responsible for making sure we the the the the the the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer the answer th the answer th the answer the answer to adapt. To adapt to what? Hey, let's not get into that. I'm responsible for making sure we have the tools we need to adapt to a
Starting point is 00:48:51 changing climate. I wonder in which way it's changing. So he was very very very widely pilloried for this. There were front page articles of, hey the national disasters minister who was in charge. Sorry, I'm going to pull you up there., hey, the National Disasters Minister who is in charge. Sorry, I'm going to pull you up there. I wrote down the National Disasters Minister in the notes because my brain had been struck on the head by a large mallet as it fell. What is it actually? It's actually the Minister for Water Resources that it's on me. Doesn't he have like multiple titles? He's, he used to be the Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources. He is now the Minister for Water Resources.
Starting point is 00:49:32 Hmm. So widely pilloried for this, front page articles in all saying, hey, this guy just straight up doesn't believe the climate change is man-made. And he has, he has now been talking to newspapers. It's it's on it's on it it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's that it's that it's that it's that it's that it's that it's th it's th it's th it's th it's th it's th. It's th it's that it's that it's that it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on it's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's on. It's that it's that it's on. It's that it's that it's that it's th. It's doesn't believe the climate change is man-made. And he has now been talking to newspapers and stuff and saying, whoa, well, whoa, that was all taken out of context, and it was the result of an interrupted exchange where somebody cut me off. And that's fine to say, except for the fact that this exchange took place via email. He was emailed the question. And he was immediately hit by a large car that traveled through one wall of his house
Starting point is 00:50:19 out the other, carrying him. And he hit sand. As the car hit him. Just flying through the air. So yeah it's good that... I can't recall emails that once we're out there. So it's very good that we are definitely at the point now where, like, I hate to do the whole waxing nostalgic for governments of the past and all that sort of stuff. But I feel like even in the days of dog shit governments like John Howard's, that they did a whole bunch of terrible shit, right? They took us to Iraq. They had the Australian wheatboard scandal. They just had all kinds of stuff. But even then,
Starting point is 00:50:59 there was kind of this line where like they would lie and cheat and all that sort of stuff but if you got caught flat out like if you if you got caught just extremely telling a lie a bald face extremely disprovable lie you know to the media or whatever and we're just caught totally flat out that you would at the very least have to say oh I fuck this up and Ithat you would at the very least have to say, oh, I've fucked this up and I apologize, and at the most you would have to resign. Like if you made a big enough fool of yourself in the government that they would say,
Starting point is 00:51:35 you know what, this is really embarrassing for us and we've just got to cut our losses here. Get the fuck out. But that just doesn't exist. No, don't just lie just doesn't exist. It doesn't exist anymore. They'll just lie about the smallest stuff. Yeah, and it really is kind of a... Yeah, if you just lie about absolutely everything at all times, then it's fine. That's everybody's just used to it. We're all worn out. We're all just... Yep. Clearly we've all just kind of accepted it.
Starting point is 00:52:02 I mean it's very similar. I know this is some extremely like Lib sounding shit to say but um But like it's it's very similar to the US where like it's just moved so far past the point of All of those normal the normal pretend institutions of government your precious norms you're precious norms Oh my norms oh my norms oh my norms, um? Right my norms, but like, just the shit like Donald Trump over the last, you know, week or two with the hurricane stuff. Oh, that's just like, fucking amazing. Hey, I said something wrong about this thing and instead of just saying, oh, I guess I was given some incorrect information. Like, that, he could have just done that. He could have just said, oh, one guess I was given some incorrect information. Like that, he could have just done that. He could have just said, oh, one of my aides told me that a list of places including Alabama,
Starting point is 00:52:53 and it turns out that Alabama was not at risk. I have fired this loser. I've pointed out him and I've said, you're fired like my TV show. And people would love it, they would eat it up. But instead, he that he that he that he that he that he that he that he that he that, he that, he that, he that, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he could, he, he could, he, he, he could, he, he, he could, he could, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he. that. that. that. that. that. that. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he. that, he could, he could, he could, he could, that, that, that, that, that, he could, he could, he could, that, he could, that, he could, that, that, that, that, he could, he could, he like my TV show. And people would love it, they would eat it up. But instead he had to say, no, I was not wrong. And that was, you know, the actual advice. And then you could see day after day, every single forecast that they gave did not include Alabama being in the path of that thing.
Starting point is 00:53:22 And instead he's like, no, I'm just going to path of that thing and instead he's like no I'm just gonna stick with this and it really does seem to be a matter of well as long as you just keep doing the lie for several days everyone just kind of gets bored of it or it is replaced by the next thing and we've all we've all accepted it and it's fine now and that's why I'm moving to Titan you gotta get to Tin there are no lies on Titan you will come to accept to accept to accept to accept to accept to accept to accept to accept to accept to accept to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the to the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the tho tho the the the tho the the the the the the the the the the tho the tho the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the tho tho tho thooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo and the and the and the the moving to Titan. You gotta get to Titan. There are no lies on Titan. You will come to accept a universal type of truth on Titan. That's right. So yeah, cool that you can just have front page articles now of you being caught out in ball-faced lies and you know the Prime Minister doesn't even say, oh that was a bit shit. Maybe, maybe Davy should apply for, you know, make a little apologize for that one, hey? What would, I feel like Scott Morrison would have to have a nickname for him.
Starting point is 00:54:12 But his last name is a little proud, so it's gonna be a bit hard to... Prado. Proud O, I reckon Prado should... Lead Pro. Well, I pry. So you know, that's all great news. And of course, Labour's doing fuck all to oppose any of this stuff because apparently their whole deal is just to say, hey, we agree with the government about everything and that's badass.
Starting point is 00:54:38 Except when we disagree, but we're a minority so we can't do anything and we can't possibly vote against it. Yeah, I'm afraid I do not understand that logic of, oh well, if something's going to get passed anyway, then voting against it is just like a virtue signaling stunt. Well, see, Andrew, where you're mistaken is there's actually a big tank out the back of the labor headcores, it's a big, big, uh, like steel tank and it's full of the labor headcores. It's a big, big, like steel tank, and it's full of their opposition juice. And if they waste their opposition juice on useless stuff that would show, you know, that they actually cared or believed in climate science, or, you know, in opposing the government on ridiculous tax cuts for the rich or for not treating poor people
Starting point is 00:55:25 like shit, then the opposition tank would be it'd be empty and then they wouldn't have any to to use for stuff that actually matters which we're still waiting to find out what it is. Still trying to figure out what it is. When it comes it's got to be good and you're gonna care. When it comes we are all going to to be copped for a to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good to be good good to be good good good to be good good good to be good the to be good good good good good good good good good. to be good. to be good. to be good. to be good. to be good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good good to to to to to to to to to to to to to to the the the the the the the to the the to to the to the to the to to the to the to the to the the to they. they. they. the the the the to be. the to the for them. When it comes we are all going to be copying a full force blast from the opposition juice tank. Absolutely drenched from a head to tow in stinky opposition juice. Yeah truly pathetic stuff and you hate to see it because yeah it's also kind of been the whole thing of everything that comes up the Labour Party says boy this is totally fucked and we should oppose this. And then Anthony Olben-Easy says,
Starting point is 00:56:09 ah, I'm exercising my authority over the party room by saying, no one can say anything mean about the liberals because the public are just sick of arguments. Yep. So what if we- So Terry Butler came and she said, hey, this is really dumb of David Little Pratt to say. And the guardian said, well, would you support something from the crossbench for a climate emergency?
Starting point is 00:56:34 Well, that's actually up to the government to decide. Who's to say whether we'll support it? The government has to do that. And they press them again to say to say to say to say to say to say to say the the the the the the the the the the the the the the to say the to say, the their their, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, thi, tho, they their, well, they're, they're, well, well, their, their, would, would, would, would, would, would, would, would, would, would, would, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, well, the, the, the the, the, the the the the the the the the the the, the the the the the the the the the the their, tho, tho, that, their, their, they. their, they. they. their, their, they. their, their, their, their, the voting for the motion? Well, that's up to the government. It's basically up to the government to do this. So they literally, they can't even say whether they would vote for something in a perfectly hypothetical scenario where it's put up, because they can't imagine anything that's not seen through the lens of the government refusing to do something. Well I think there's two lights through which you can look at this and one is that they
Starting point is 00:57:18 don't want to come out and say publicly in every single article in every single interview in which they're asked about this, but they don't want to say publicly that, well they don't want to support something if the crossbench puts it up, because then it will be seen as like the Greens or Independence Driving change. And even if they're supporting it because it's the right thing to do, there will still be an article in the paper that says the Greens, the Greens, the Greens, the Greens, the Greens, the Greens, the Greens, and labor, and labor, and labor, and labor, the the the the the the the the th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, their, their, they're, they're, they's, they's, they's, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, they're thi.eei.ei.ei.ei. And, they're, they're, they're, they're they're they're they're they're right thing to do, there will still be an article in the paper that says, the Greens are being leaders on this issue and Labor can't have that because- They would hate that. Because the Greens are awful leftist vampires stealing their precious votes,
Starting point is 00:57:55 which are owed to them despite them not actually doing anything. And the other angle I think to look at it from is that, the the the the the the the the the the the the other the other the other the other the other the other the other the other the other the other the other the other the other the other the other the other the other to look to look to look to look to look to look to look to look to look at to look at to look at to look, to look, to look, to look, because to look, because to look, because to look, because to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to to look at to look at to look at to look at to look at to look at to look at to.. their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, because, their, because they're they're they is that, yeah, they can't, just this whole thing of being unable to say, oh yes, we will or won't do this thing, like you said, they can't even say, yeah, hypothetically we would vote in favor of or against this thing. Because it's like the only lens through which they can look at things is will the Greens get some credit for it and also how exactly will this play with voters? Will this win us some votes away from the right wing or should we agree with the right wing under this absolutely absurd premise that if we agree with them enough
Starting point is 00:58:43 somehow a bunch of their voters will say, oh, these guys seem agreeable. I think I'll vote for them now instead of the party who's a borne policies I actually agree with. You're right though in that, like, they just can't picture something that comes out of the Greens that's good that they wouldn't have immediately. And we saw Murray Watt, Senator for ALP. So, Larissa Waters put out a statement on Twitter, as the, you know, the fires in Queensland were raging, basically calling for, calling for action, as, you know, is the same thing to do. He replies, Larissa, right now, people's homes are burning and others are risking their lives
Starting point is 00:59:22 to put out dangerous fires. You're not alone in thinking about climate change, but is now really the time to be to to be a a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a to be a statement, the the the the the the the to be put out out out out out out out out out out the the the the the their statement, put out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out out a statement their statement the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the tha, put put put put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, put out, thatea' their statement, put out, put are risking their lives to put out dangerous fires. You're not alone in thinking about climate change but is now really the time to be making political mileage? Yes. Yes, absolutely. Like what are you gonna wait for the fires to go out? Because I think I've got some bad news for you as to whether the fires are going to go out or not. And I hate to I hate to say it because Murray What generally seems like he's an okay th th th th th th. th. th. th. the th. th. th. th. the th. th. the th. th is an th. th. the th. thi is an the thi is an thi is an thi is an thi is thi is thi is the the thi's thi. thi. to be to be the to be the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the th. th. th. the the th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. ti. ti. But is now. ti. time. ti. But, ti. ti. ti. ti. ti. ti. ti. ti. ti. their their are going to go out or not. And I hate to say it because Murray what generally seems like he's an okay guy but he is 1,000 percent making the American right-wings anti-gun control argument. Absolutely look we just need to wait for the last shelter to hit the ground before we can do something about it. Yeah wow all of the all of the kindergarten-aged victims of this mass shooting
Starting point is 01:00:07 haven't even been buried yet and you want to talk about how maybe we should not have all these assault rifles? Political mileage much. Yeah, I would much prefer that you waited until the thing had just kind of stopped and everyone had stopped thinking about it, and then we can all go back to not talking about it. And that would be much preferable to me. I think it's safe to say we're not going to stop talking about it. This is going to keep going on. I did want to just make the obvious, very obvious, that there is a bunch of climate strikes occurring, many of them through the school strike for climate.
Starting point is 01:00:48 Probably good on your kids. Absolutely. On September 20th, you probably know all about this already. But if you don't, in Adelaide, please get to Victoria Square at 12 p.m. Brisbane Queens Garden at 1230 p.m. Glebe Park at 12th at Camberra. Parliament lawns in Hobart at 12. Treasury lawns in Melbourne at 2. Forest place in Perth at 11 or Sydney at the domain at 12 p.m. There's also obviously lots and lots of little ones going up around the place regionally. So if you can, please look up your local one, go to that.
Starting point is 01:01:32 I mean, the least you can do is be seen. I managed to bully the pedestrian group CEO into giving everyone the afternoon off to go to the protests. So if you have a very easily malleable CEO who is on slack as well, try bullying your CEO by calling him a big corporate bitch until he says, fine. So give that a bash. Otherwise, just walk out. What are they going to do? Fire you? Maybe. I don't know your boss. I hope so. The dream isn't enough of a trick to do? Fire you? Maybe, I don't know your boss. I hope so. The dream.
Starting point is 01:02:05 Your boss isn't enough of a prick to do that. Yes, folks, you hate to see it because it turns out that these politicians really are a bunch of clowns. Damn, got them. And on that basis, I will, we will leave you with some slightly lighter news. We're doing the classic classic classic classic classic classic classicthing where it's 27 minutes of murders and breakheads. We've talked about war and famine all fucking night. But on a lighter note, uh, this squirrel can water ski.
Starting point is 01:02:38 Hmm. It's from the movie, Anker Man. Everybody remember the film, Anchor Man? He threw a trident. Maybe, I don't know, I'm going to need some more information. Can you describe it to me in a bit more detail? I'm trying to think of all the iconic lines. Hey, toilet store. Hmm. Yep.
Starting point is 01:03:02 And tha. Here's an article from New Zealand, the home of very important news. A Kiwi adman has chosen an unusual support person to accompany him to a redundancy meeting. In lieu of the usual suspects of a friend, colleague or family member, this member of the creative team at FCB hired a professional clown to attend the meeting with him. Which I just want to say is a very powerful move. This is extremely good to me. An image sent to the Herald overnight shows the staffer sitting alongside his support clown while he talks to the individuals running the meeting.
Starting point is 01:03:39 The Herald understands that the clown blew up balloons and folded them into a series of animals throughout the meeting. Oh man, it's so good. It is further understood that the clown mimed crying when the redundancy paperwork was handed over to the staffer. Ha ha ha! Whoop! Truly wonderful, truly wonderful. The latest restructure at FCB follows on from job cuts at the agency after the loss of the voter phone ad account.
Starting point is 01:04:11 I like that this is New Zealand news. It's like, everybody hear about FCB losing the big voter phone account. Here's the twist at the end of this story. You're ready? It's understood that the staffer has, however, landed on his feet since his odd meeting at FCB, getting a new job at DDB along with his creative partner, not the clown. They do specify that his creative partner is not the clown. They are set to start their roles next week upon returning from their birth country, Australia. Oh, there it is.
Starting point is 01:04:48 So it was a bloody Australian the whole time. Nation of shit posters. Nation of shit posters taking their professional support clowns. Well, they were right to fire him. And he was right to hire a clown and take the clown with him to the meeting. That's what I think. So that's it, folks. That's all we have time for this week. Sorry for all the depressing news about country burning and the reef dying and nobody
Starting point is 01:05:16 being interested in doing anything about it. But hey, what are you going to do? I'm sorry for the crows that are just constantly screaming outside my window. It's like an ominous call of, appellant of doom almost. Yep, well I'm gonna walk out immediately after this and get as close to them as I can and just scream at them until my eyes fill up with blood, like Joe Biden. So I don't respect them. I'm just going to go out there and give those crows a real talking to, a real serve.
Starting point is 01:05:49 Are you going to refer to one of them as president my boss or another one as president Bernie Sanders? That clip, that clip of Joe Biden giving that speech where he's talking about the he's talking about the six years he spent as vice president under Barack Obama and in the middle of talking he says when when this thing happened president my boss and you can hear the gears in his brain I didn't even know about that one oh oh you can hear the gears in his brain. I didn't even know about that one. Oh, you can hear the gears in his brain grind to a halt as he is unable to recall the name of the last president.
Starting point is 01:06:36 His boss of six years. His boss of six years that he worked with every day and he doesn't know his name well enough to say it into a microphone. The clip of him calling Bernie president was like just the look on Bertie's face and that clip is the best thing in the world where he just looks like someone has just told him that they've run out of his favorite soup. Oh and he does have a favorite soup. I guarantee that. And it's a chowder. Oh good lord. Well that's it for us folks. As always if you enjoy the show and you would like to support so maybe even if you
Starting point is 01:07:17 would like an extra bonus episode every week of only five dollars a month you can pop on over to patre. And slash Buntavista. Sign up. And we would love that. We'd love to see you again. So until next week. Bye bye. the
