Starting point is 00:00:00 Airbuds, Melbourne's podcast network, Earbuds Network, Earbuds Network. to Burtavisto Socialist Club, episode 22. I'm Andrew and tonight it's just me all alone with my dear friend returned from the united starts. I'm Andrew, and tonight it's just me all alone. With my dear friend, returned from the united starts. It's Ben. Hi Ben.
Starting point is 00:00:31 Hello. I can't believe I laugh at you've said unit starts twice now. But I have. Who knows why? United starts of Amaricia? Well like, uh, united farts. Hmm. Hmm.
Starting point is 00:00:48 Well, that's a little rough in their, in their time of need. It seems that apparently, shockingly, there has been another mass shooting. I saw a headline that said, uh, mass shooting, mass shooting re-ignites gun control debate, and my first thought was does it? Hmm. I mean it sort of maybe wafted another breeze towards a flame that has been burning continuously for years and fruitlessly. Yeah, you can't help but get the feeling that it's kind of where it's at now. You know, it's found its level. That's just where it's going to stay.
Starting point is 00:01:27 Yep. You know, I've seen people say that the whole, the tweet that sort of crops up now with every mass shooting is, um, is the one about, you know, America made its decision with Sandy Hook. When a whole classroom full of kindergartners can get killed by somebody with an assault rifle and everybody goes, wow, that's terrible. But let's not try changing anything. You've kind of collectively, you've collectively made your decision. And pretty much everything that's happened since then bears that out. Yep, it doesn't matter if the church full of people.
Starting point is 00:02:08 It doesn't matter if the shooter like, like 600 people or something got injured in Vegas, some insane number. Yeah. It doesn't matter. It's fine. No, no loss is great enough to warrant telling people hey maybe you need a more extensive background check before you get an hour 15 that's just going too far. Yeah there is no act too obscene and as I saw a thing about the about the most recent shooting in a church where somebody killed about half the congregation apparently it was I'm struggling to think, to find the exact numbers here, but it was, you know, something like 20-something people killed
Starting point is 00:02:52 and 20-something people injured in a town with a population of 680 something. 4% of that town died in that shape. I think it was actually 8% of that town. Oh. From memory, unless I made that shape. I think it was actually 8% of that town. Oh, hmm. From memory? Unless I made that up. Oh, look, we can both make up numbers all night. Oh, well, yeah, and it also makes me think of, um, of that very grisly, recurring article in the onion. Mm, that there's no way to, uh, what is it? There's no way you can stop this. Never could have seen this coming, it, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, th. It th. It th. It th. It th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. Uh, uh, thi. thi. Uh, thi, thi, thi, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, thi. Uh, thi. Uh, thi. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. Uh, th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. th. th. thi. th. thi. I th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi.'s no way you can stop this. Never could have seen this Cummings, it says Only Nation where this happens over and ever again.
Starting point is 00:03:28 But as I saw somebody pointing out recently, I didn't actually realize this was the case. They actually republished the article every time it happens, and they just changed the location and the numbers. Oh, that's just the same article that people put out every time. Yeah.. And th, and th, and th, and th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, the, there, the, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, there, the, the only there, there's there's the only the only the only the only the only the only the only the only only only only the only only only the only only only the only only the only, the only, the only, the only, th, th. And th. And th. And th, th. And th, th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And th. And thi, thi, thi, thi, that, thi, tho-I thi's thi's thi's thi's their their their their their their thi, the numbers. Oh, I thought it was just the same articles that people bring out every time. Yeah. That's a bit, I don't know how I feel about that actually. That seems a bit weird, but I guess it does make a very good point. Yeah, that nothing changes except for the place in the numbers. I think that's a valid point.
Starting point is 00:04:02 Yeah. Yeah. So, well that's a pretty grizzly note to to start to to to to that's a valid point. Yeah. Yeah. So, uh, well that's a pretty grisly note to start off on, welcome, welcome back from America where that happens. Uh, yeah, I'm glad, uh, that it didn't happen where I was, but still sad that it happened anywhere. Yeah. Uh, I hope it stops happening.
Starting point is 00:04:25 It's probably not going to, um, but you know, let's, fingers crossed, fingers crossed, something, something happens? Some kind of circuit break up. I, you know, you just got to wonder, like, you know, you see all these arguments for people being like, oh, it's not the problem, you know, that's not the problem. It's part of the problem blah, blah, blah, blah. But that's, to me, it's part of the problem. It's definitely a part of the problem, but you have to wonder just what, what these people think it could be? Like, is there something in American tap order?
Starting point is 00:04:59 Is it something just the way that Americans are raised, is it, like, they have to, there's to be something else there. I just don't understand what they're blaming it on, and if they are blaming on something that's not guns, why are they not making steps to try and address those things? You know, they're not looking for better, you know, they're not looking for addressing poverty, you know, it's... Yeah, I think I can, like, I completely agree with the idea that, well, for example, President, the President Donald Trump currently over in Japan, he made a comment about it at a press conference where he said, oh, it's not a guns issue, it's a mental health issue right there.
Starting point is 00:05:47 And maybe someone could kind of take that at face value if the Republicans were interested in anybody being able to access any kind of health care at all, let alone mental health care. So, you know, that seems completely off base. But I have to say I kind of do agree with several things that might not line up with a lot of the usual Australian gloating about this sort of thing which is to immediately say well we had this one big massacre and then we just got rid of the guns and we're good now. I don't think it's a particularly helpful line for a lot of Australian people to trot out
Starting point is 00:06:31 every time that it happens, if only because, number one, I think that on a really, really deep ingrained cultural level, we are very, very different. I don't think that's you know, like we had a guest on a long time. Go, dear friend of the show, Eliza Gager, and we kind of talked about the comparisons between the sort of parallel developments of like Bush Ranger and cowboy culture in Australia and America. And, you know, there are a lot of parallels but they're not the same in the Australia never quite had that same kind of wild west you know you're out here and you got to look after yourself and you shoot somebody
Starting point is 00:07:19 who looks at the wrong way frontier kind of stuff and I do believe that a lot of that kind of thing is deeply ingrained into the DNA of a lot of that country. But there is the secondary issue which is that in Australia when that shooting took place at Port Arthur, if you believe that, if you don't believe it was a false flag. Good God. Oh my God. I still can't believe how freaked out I was within the last 12 months when I actually became aware of Port Arthur conspiracy theorists. I didn't know it was a thing. Now I know it's a thing. It shouldn't have surprised me, but it really did. Anyway, yeah, when Port Arthur happened and there was, you know, an amnesty and a gun buyback
Starting point is 00:08:07 and go out of a lot of guns, yeah, culturally, it just wasn't the same. There wasn't the same kind of like, everybody having a gun in their home for self-defense, everybody hunting is a normal sort of cultural thing, all that sort of stuff. When you look at America America where there are more guns than there are people in a nation of over 350 million or whatever it is, versus Australia where I don't think it's unreasonable to
Starting point is 00:08:38 say that it would probably be pretty uncommon to own a gun outside of being a farmer. Yeah, absolutely. That's not to say that like target and sport shooters and hunters and stuff don't exist, but it's not like an everyday part of life here in the same way that it is there. So, you know, for us to say, well, just buy up all the guns and get rid of them and tuf them out. Yeah, I think, I think it's showing a sort of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of of ignorance their their their their their ignorance ignorance their ignorance ignorance ignorance their their their the guns and get rid of them and turf them out. Yeah, I think it's showing a sort of ignorance of the sheer scale of the issue. Yeah. In that country, it's like how would you even begin to go about collecting and disposing literally hundreds of millions of guns for millions of people who don't want you to have them.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Let alone all the illegal ones. Whole can of worms. Yeah, they kind of fucked. Yep. I don't know, it's just very hard to imagine what it could be that toeat. It's just very hard to imagine what that change would be. And even then what that serious action would actually constitute. It's really hard to even picture what that the the the the the illegal the the illegal the the illegal the the illegal the illegal the the the illegal th th the the illegal th the illegal th th and even then what that serious action would actually constitute it's really hard to even picture what that change would be. Even if they started transitioning to a similar model to Australian gun
Starting point is 00:09:56 ownership where you essentially have to you know if you don't own a gun, if you don't have a gun license say for you't have gun license, say, for, you know, workers like a security guard or whatever, you have it as a hobbyist. So, you know, you need to go to a gun range, like, you have to have a gun club that you're a part of. You need to go there once every, I don't know, is it like 30 or 60 days or something? But you essentially need to demonstrate that you're, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, their, their, to, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, th, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, to, to, to, thi.a, thi.a, thi.a, thi.a, thi, thi, their, their, thi need to demonstrate... You don't know what the regularity is. But it's with some frequency, and relatively frequent. You basically just need to actually demonstrate that you're not just some psychopath that's hoarding guns. Yeah, you're not just filling out all the appropriate paperwork that allows you to keep a whole stack of guns in your home. Yeah. And then actually keeping track of like who owns what guns actually having
Starting point is 00:10:45 waiting periods that are stuck to actually doing background checks even you know mental health checks would be amazing but I mean that's something that they would never ever pay for. Hmm. But I don't know maybe if they get a maybe if they get single-payer health care first, then people with mental health problems will actually like go and turn up for help. Well that'd be nice. Yeah, wouldn't it? Wouldn't it though? So speaking of this shooting, that brings us to the topic of today's show. We wanted to talk about a dear dear friend of the show, a columnist from News Limited, known
Starting point is 00:11:29 as Miranda Divine. Divine in name and divine in artistic output. Hmm. Truly, truly heavenly, heavenly celestial style writing. If you are a listener from the land of overseas, you may not be familiar with Miranda's writing. It's, oh, I don't know. I mean, if you heard one of our previous episodes where we were talking about conservative wonder kind Caleb Bond, you can think of Miranda
Starting point is 00:12:08 Divine as basically the, you know, the alien queen that birthed him in an egg sack. A bit of a mentor figure between Miranda Divine and Andrew Bolt's. Miranda and Caleb, of course, both appear on Andrew Bolt's TV show. Miranda, look, granted our politics don't align, but I don't think it's unfair to say that a lot of the things that she writes are really dumb. I think that's relatively generous. She's more or less the worst person live.
Starting point is 00:12:47 She's not above stretching the truth to score very shitty political points. She's, I think the worst thing about her is that she is very, very good at her job, which is getting dip shits riled up about very, very harmless, trivial things. So every week, she writes out a 500 to 600 word conniption about something that is ultimately harmless, but does so with just the most insane vigor. It's, yeah, she's one of the most infuriating people in the world to read. And it's very hard to tell how cynical it is. Hmm. That's really one of the problems that I face with one of her
Starting point is 00:13:44 news corps, staple mates in Andrew Bolt. That's really one of the problems that I face with one of her News Corp. Staplemates in Andrew Bolt. In the, by all accounts, much like Tony Abbott, by all accounts, a lot of people will say, oh, if you actually meet Andrew Bolt or Tony Abbott, they're really intelligent, personable people who are good at communicating and all that sort of stuff. Which kind of makes it all the worse that apparently the rest of their lives are things that they have actively chosen to do. So yeah, Andrew Bolt is, I feel similarly where I just kind of don't, I don't know how truly invested and cynical Andrew Bolt is and what he does. I would maybe draw more of a parallel between Miranda Divine
Starting point is 00:14:31 and Chris Kenny. Yeah, I don't for sure. Because yeah, I think that Chris Kenny is is much more similar in the sense that he seems to, he seems to start off from very, very disingenuous places. He seems to, you know, kick off a controversy by saying something willfully ignorant. Very disingenuous, really sort of deliberately misreading things, just to take offense to them. And then when people say, come on, you big dip shit, he then puts up this pretense of, you know, serious gravitas and the, you know, we should be, we should all be really taking things a bit more seriously. So the reason that the topic of a mass shooting made me think of Miranda. It's because you want to shoot it with a gun?
Starting point is 00:15:27 No. Are you sure you don't want to say that on the podcast? Well, it went well for us last time that you said you wanted to shoot somebody with a gun on the show. I don't know if I ever said that. That doesn't sound like something that I would say, certainly not on a podcast. Yep, I sure hope nobody edits in an audio clip of you saying it on the show. So, I couldn't help but notice when looking at Miranda Devine's Twitter feed for this episode, that she had been reacting to the news of this shooting in Sutherland Springs by, by cherry cherry picking you know
Starting point is 00:16:08 different different tweets and all that sort of stuff that's confirmed to have used for her seems to be doing a lot of retweeting of weird alt-rights figure Chet Cannon who's the strange bleach-blon, Make America Great Again, hat-wearing Mormon Chud from the states. She's tweeted, of course, she's retweeted him talking about, showing a clip from video about the guy who apparently chased the shooter with his gun, saying, God bless the good guy with a gun that stopped the bad guy with a gun. That trope that we all know to just with his gun saying, God bless the good guy with a gun that stopped the bad guy with a gun.
Starting point is 00:16:47 That trope that we all know to just be completely false. Yeah, wasn't there something about the, was the Vegas shooting? Oh God, this is so awful, but it might well have been just another recent shooting where the cops came out and said that, or the so-called good guys with the guns thr............................ I, th. I, th. I, the the the the the their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, the the the the the the the the the the the the the tr. the tr. the tr. the tr. the tr. the tr. the tr. the the the the the the the the, the the the, the, the, the, the the the, the the their, their, their, their, their, th.. th. tod. today, today, today, tre. tre. true. truea. truea. truea. truea. true. true. true. true. trope. trope. troped. the cops came out and said that or the so-called good guys with guns that were there just made it harder for them to apprehend the perpetrator because there's a bunch of dudes running around with guns. Yeah, yeah, I mean there was definitely a bunch of that sort of stupid conjecture from from gun advocates on online where people were saying, oh well if the people there had they could have taken this thuuuuuuu. thu. thu. thu. thu. thu. thu. their, their, thu, their, thu, their, their, thi, thi, the, the, the, the, the, the, thr-n't their, the, the, the, the, the, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, they..... they. they. they. they, the, the, thr-n't thr-n't thr-n't thr-n't thr-a, thr-n''eat, thr-m-maheat, thr-a'eat, thr-a'ea'ea'ea'ea, thr-n'ea, th there had have been armed, they could have taken this guy down and the response to that
Starting point is 00:17:27 immediately was, what are you suggesting that a bunch of people in the crowd at this concert that's being shot at from across the street in a like a 30-second floor window or whatever it was, that they should have all pulled out their handguns and started blindly firing out their handguns and started blindly firing at the side of a hotel if they could even figure out where it was coming from? Would that have really helped out the situation? It's kind of insane that the what-ifery about this is always like, well what if there had been a good guy there with a gun? I would put it to you a better
Starting point is 00:18:00 what if the shooter didn't have a gun? Hmm, what if nobody showed up with a gas-powered assault rifle and lit the place up? So Miranda has also retweeted amongst Chet cannons, other tweets. So Chet has screencapped a series of posts from people who are in favor of stricter gun controls. And Chet says, dozens tragically murdered while worshipping God at church in Sutherland Springs. The left, fuck your prayers, and so he's screen-shotted people saying, what has now become a popular sentiment, for example, fuck your invisible thoughts and invisible prayers, buck up and do something. Another example is somebody saying, fuck your thoughts and prayers,
Starting point is 00:18:56 GOP, don't pray, vote. Fuck your thoughts and prayers, if Congress hadn't nested in the pockets of the gun lobby, we could have stopped this after Sandy Hook. Says another person. Now apart from the fact that very clearly Chet has just searched for the phrase, uh, fuck your thoughts and prayers. And then just screen cap those regardless of context. What makes this a very Miranda divine piece of content to endorse via retweet, because as we all know, retweets do in fact equal endorsements.
Starting point is 00:19:34 Is again, the very sort of willful misinterpretation of the sentiment here. Oh, absolutely, because, you know, it would be absurd to look at those and say, well, we need, and assume they mean we need re-election on gun control. What they clearly mean is they're saying religious people should go to hell for being religious, especially if they've just experienced a tragedy. Yes, the very obvious inference to take from these tweets that say things about Congress in the pockets of the gun lobby is those people deserve to be killed in a mass shooting because they prayed.
Starting point is 00:20:14 Which of course, you know, brings us into a topic that I'm sure we will touce on in a bit more detail, which is Miranda's raving persecution complex about Christians which extends to quite a few of her different hobby horses most particularly the Catholic Church. It's kind of it's amazing that she absolutely refuses to believe that women face any form of discrimination in the 21st century but that the Catholic Church is like the single most persecuted institution in the world. Yes. Well I guess you can only care about one thing, so she's chosen hers. We've clearly chosen to respect women. You know, you got to have one. This only is only one. You can support the Pope or you can respect women but you can't do both.
Starting point is 00:21:08 Yes, absolutely. I'll have to say I kind of agree with her there. Um, so, you know, you know, Ben has gone out and he's racked up a few examples. Because I'm assuming that in your time at, say, SBS comedy and pedestrian, that sort of thing, that you've probably written a few pieces on some of the things that Miranda has blotted out. I certainly found a bunch of these just by Googling Ben McLea, Miranda Devine, and then seeing which articles I had written and then reverse engineering, which articles of hers
Starting point is 00:21:42 they had been about. Don't remember writing a lot of these so it was a great refresher. Yeah well would you would you like to run us through some of your favorites? I absolutely would thank you so much for asking. I'm going to start with probably what is a quintessential Miranda Divine piece just because it really encapsulates what her her MO is. The title of the article, and figure out how to actually follow links from Google Box. Do you shift click?
Starting point is 00:22:13 Do you control click. Well, you click on it, and then it brings up the actual link, and you can click on that. Hey, would you look at that? You should link that in. Yeah. The article is titled, Reverse racism is now acceptable in Australia, which is huge of true. This is from April 1st, 2017, not an April Fool's prank. This is her genuine opinion.
Starting point is 00:22:41 So, this is her taking a single anecdote from a very misguided person and extrapolating it into a very firmly held belief about what's happening in the entire country. So the story here is that a mum in a swanky Sydney suburb, heard about a playgroup for mums and kids from a friend of hers, went to that playgroup and was basically told, fuck off, you're white, you can't join us, and that's the crux of Miranda's article. So, uh, what happened here is that this is a playgroup for basically recent immigrants and people that speak English as a second language you know as a sort of a support group for
Starting point is 00:23:38 people like that and to meet people and you know that sort of thing and this mom was not one of those two things. So they said, hey, this isn't for you. And of course... Oh, we actually put this on for a reason for a certain demographic. Instead of just being like, oh, this is a resource for people, for, you know, recent, reason to need help. Cool, I'll go to another play group.
Starting point is 00:24:03 She of course she instead asked to speak, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to speak, to speak, to speak, to speak, to to to speak, to to to to to to to to to to to the need help. Cool, I'll go to another playgroup. She of course contacted Miranda Divine and lost to her. Of course she instead asked to speak to the manager. Yes, very much so. One of my favorite things about this is in the opening paragraphs, Miranda Divide says, so the woman said to her, can I ask what your cultural background is? Taken it back, Coverdale, who has blonde hair said to her, can I ask what your cultural background is? Taking it back, Coverdale, who has blonde hair and freckles, said I'm Australian. Now I wonder what she means by she has blonde hair and freckles. It's very good because it's a really nice subtle way to illustrate to the reader that she is both white and a real Australian. Yeah, it's like that news.com. That article about the, uh, the white dude that beat the shit out of, uh, well, I don't
Starting point is 00:24:54 know if he actually managed to beat the shit out of them, but he got into a fight with a number of thugs. Oh, yeah, no, no, that was a, that was the daily male piece. Oh, it was the daily, that's that's that's the daily, that's that's that's the headline that's th. That's the headline th. That's the headline, th. th. th. the headline, th. th. the headline, th. th. th. th. thi. that's, that's, thi. thi. thi. that's, thi. I's, thi. It's, thi. I's, thi. I's, the, the, the, the, the, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. that's, that's, that's, th. th. that, that, th. th. th. that, the, the. the, the, the was the daily male piece. Oh, it was the daily male, that's right. And they said the headline was something like blonde hero takes on thugs in like vicious, vicious brawl so it's just, oh, this is, you mean it's a white man versus black people is what you try to say. Yes, yes, I remember asking the writer of that piece several pointed questions. Oh, I think th th th th th th th th th th th thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi that's that's that's the that's that's the the their their their their their their their their their their their the headline the headline the headline the headline the headline the headline their th. that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that's that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, theean, theat, theat, theat, theat, thean. thean. thean, thi. thi. thi. that piece several pointed questions. Oh, I think we all did, actually. That how he arrived at that title, and he was like, just doing the news, mate.
Starting point is 00:25:32 And then less than a week later, the Daily Mail pulled their standard trick of taking somebody else's article, putting a different name at the top and reprinting it, as they do. And it was somebody's piece that they'd spent like months doing, you know, really, really intensive investigative reporting over. And this dude just stuck his name at the top and went away with it. It's great stuff. Well, look, you gotta make money somehow. Some other highlights from this were, uh, fucking what even... Oh look, I like this here, where the woman said, I'm sorry, you can't come here,
Starting point is 00:26:16 it's for multicultural families and people who speak languages other than English at home. Coverdell stood her ground. I said, I'm not leaving. My kids were playing. My older son was having such a good time with his buddy and I thought, why should I leave? Of course that's what you thought, lady. Why should I, why should I have to make space for anybody else in this community to put a specific thing on? I mean, she's definitely a perfect match for a candidate for a Miranda Divine article, for sure. There's this wonderful little paragraph in there that just really highlights Miranda's wonderful flair for the dramatic.
Starting point is 00:26:57 Ironically enough, it was just a few days before Harmony Day, a big event at Alexandria Park to celebrate our country's cultural diversity with a free halal beef and chicken sausage sizzle to twist the knife a little deeper. This year's theme was we all belong. I love the idea that this whole thing has been like an engineered this entire thing has been done to offend this one lady. Yeah oh absolutely. The council organized a big event. And the highlighting that it's halal as well as just a lovely touch. Little sprinkles, little sprinkles of great stuff. She caps off this article by drawing her huge conclusions from this one incident into, this is just wonderful. It is politically incorrect to say so, but but the the the the the the the the the the the thi thttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt. Starting point is 00:27:52 diversity and celebrating difference. In the ADF, for instance, there are attempts to erase the Anglo-Saxon warrior culture, which... Okay. I can't even, I don't even know about this. 300. I assume she's talking about the movie 300. Yeah, I believe that. th. th. th, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, th, I don't even know about this. And recent time... 300. I assume she's talking about the movie 300. Yeah, I believe that might be it. I don't know that was, that was Greeks, but whatever. Whatever, Miranda. I mean, that's just a really weird assertion as well that the Australian's armed forces are exclusively white. And I don't know if I would also describe what we have in the ADF as a warrior culture. I don't know if you know anyone that works in the defense force, but they're not a... I mean they're just guys.
Starting point is 00:28:36 Well, and some women now, that can happen too. Well, I'll also say that, um, the examples of what I think she's talking about here that I have seen. I would prefer that that th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th that the examples of what I think she's talking about here that I have seen I would prefer that they erased it. I so yeah I moved I moved back to Canberra this year where I grew up and that is where the the Defense Force Academy and all that sort of stuff is it's where a lot of the you know military training it's where the Department of Defense is all that sort of stuff is it's where a lot of the you know military training it's where the Department of the Defense is all that kind of stuff and I remember being coming back sort of over Christmas and I went down to the shops and saw several guys wearing military gear and they were wearing you know
Starting point is 00:29:24 sort of fatigues from the from the waist down but on the top half of them they were wearing you know sort of fatigues from the from the waist down but on the top half of them they were wearing hoodies black hoodies that said on them proud infidel and yeah and I was like hmmm I'm not entirely sure how awesome I think it's the same. And yeah, and I thi thanks. And yeah, I'm not I'm not entirely sure how thou th I think I think tho th. th th th th thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi. I thi. I thi. I thi. I thi. I thi. I thi. I thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi they thi entirely sure how awesome I think it is that there's like members of our armed services just cruising around in public still in uniform and with the thing over the top that pretty clearly says like I came to kill Muslims. You know what I mean? Like, just that whole kind of vibe.
Starting point is 00:30:05 And I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that that is exactly the kind of culture that Miranda is talking about preserving and I'm not into it. It's a bit weird, it's a bit creepy. Yeah it was a strange thing, strange thing to see out. And it does, it did genuinely make mething, strange thing to see out. And it does, it did genuinely make me sort of go like, I wonder how the old armed forces PR folks would feel about all these soldiers cruising around wearing that kind of shit. Probably not great, I would imagine. Hmm. Yeah, it doesn't exactly, it doesn't exactly reinforce the idea that's,
Starting point is 00:30:47 there isn't a deep undercurrent of racism to how people are trained and deployed around the world or anything. But whatever. Oh, um, you probably, I don't know. Probably no one's told you this before, but Islam is no race. So, oh, oh. I'd like to start off by extending the show's deepest apologies to Miranda Divine. To any and all of my former criticisms of imperialism, which I now understand to be good. Yes, absolutely. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:16 Sorry, sorry everybody. And I can't wait to start getting not racist. I've been waiting. Now that I know I can't be racist. I also can't wait to start getting not racist uh... i've been i know i can't be racist i also can't wait for you to not be racist i'm very excited for it uh... it's a lovely cherry on top of this article uh... is her saying bigotry is condoned as a corrective to so-called white privilege
Starting point is 00:31:43 but reinforcing separate cultural identities inevitably leads to so-called white privilege, but reinforcing separate cultural identities inevitably leads to the balkanization of Australia and the disowning of our national identity. You just fucking said in the previous paragraph that you want to preserve Anglo-Saxon warrior culture. That's literally a cultural identity, you dumb motherfucker. Well look, there's a, there's a real thread to a lot of this stuff, which I think we were sort of talking about. We touched on this in a previous episode, where we made mention of a lot of the times
Starting point is 00:32:13 that Miranda has massively stuck her foot in it, by shooting off her mouth about something that she has perceived to be, you know, an act of political correctness because as we all know any and all political correctness is political correctness. Gone mad. Oh would you happen to have one perfect very short hilarious example that would say fit in the screenshot of three tweets by the charts? Well, well this one time. So Miranda Devine was apparently watching the rugby and tweeted, did David Pocock just do jazz hands after a try?
Starting point is 00:32:57 What a wanker! To which the actual David Pocock replied to her and said, actually, that's Oslan, Australian sign language, for clapping. I did it for my friend, because that is her first language. And Miranda, rather than saying, oh, I'm such a big dip shit, said, oh good, I thought you were doing like a feminist thing. But I'm glad you weren't. And then tweeted out a link to one of her own pieces in which she is raving nonsensically about all of these imagined,
Starting point is 00:33:43 imagined psychotic leftists demanding safe spaces and being triggered and all that sort of stuff. And as I said at the time when we first sort of touched on this on that previous episode, what really struck me about that was that when she had this pointed out to her that no, that's just a link that she is drawing entirely from her own imagination because she spends way too much time thinking about all this shit and imagining that people are as invested in it as she is. Rather than seeing that for what it was and saying, oh I'm really embarrassed
Starting point is 00:34:21 or maybe I should, you know, take a step back. She instead Said oh, okay. That's fine. I just thought you were doing this thing which according to me you're not allowed to do And then you know posted a link to her article reinforcing that yeah the the text you used before she linked after her article was for those puzzled about my version to hashtag jazz hands. It's the feminist version of clapping which triggers anxiety so first, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, th, th, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, tho, tho, th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th th th th th th th th th th's th's th's th's th's thi thi, thi, thi, that that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that's the feminist version of clapping which triggers anxiety. So first of all, just because you heard one anecdotal story about some people asking people not to clap, it could be, you know, it could be, I don't know, whatever, it doesn't really matter. That doesn't mean it's the feminist version of clapping. It's not like everyone who is a feminist does that instead of clapping.
Starting point is 00:35:07 That has also committed to clapping. Like, she just, she takes these weird anecdotal things and then extrapolates them universally. And second, this is a point we make pretty often on the podcast. Who gives you shit? Hmm. Like no one is forcing, no one has come to Miranda Divine and been like, hey, don't clap. You have to do the Oslan version of clapping. Yeah, like, and if it's happening in like, if even if there are groups everywhere that are doing this, cool, it's a consideration for people that are made anxious by like loud and harsh noises or whatever, who the fuck cares? Just let them do it. Like, isn't that what being conservative is going to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be to be the to be the to be the to be the their their to their their to to to to to to to clap. to clap. to clap. to clap. to clap. to to to their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their th. thi. thi. thi. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. toe. their their the fuck cares? Just let them do it like Isn't that what being conservative is supposed to be all about is just like Minimally interfering people's faces and letting them do what they want to do with their lives?
Starting point is 00:35:55 Why is it so offensive to her that like people are just being consider it to the people around them? It impacts her life in no way Well again, I I read that article that she linked to? And like? to? to? And, and like? And, and like? And, and like? And, and liked to it? And, and liked, and to it, and to it, to it, to it, to it, to it, to it, to it, the the the the their that their that that that that their their that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that thi, thi, thi, thi, th, th, their their their their their their their their their their their to to to to to to to to their to their their their their their their thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi to the people around them. It impacts her in no way. Well again, I read that article that she linked to, and the reference to Jazz Hands instead of clapping is like a quarter of a sentence long as part of a rattled off string of, as you said, completely anecdotal references to things. She she doesn't expand on it, she doesn't provide a link to a story of it happening somewhere, she doesn't come back around to it and flesh it out at all. It is just a single thing where she said, from safe spaces to jazz hands, feminists are out of
Starting point is 00:36:42 control. And that's it. That's the only reference to it in the article. There is absolutely no evidence supplied of it ever having happened anywhere, let alone one time. But yeah, this is just the thing that really strikes me about, you know, Miranda especially, even more so than Chris Kenny or Andrew Bolt or any of those sorts of other Australian right-wing colonists. She's probably only
Starting point is 00:37:12 matched by Mark Latham who I would probably consider to be considerably more unhinged. But yeah what's what's really striking about it is it, you're talking about people who literally make a career out of like identifying something that they think is someone else taking things too seriously or not being able to take a joke or getting offended too easily or whatever it is, you know, they're constantly trotting out the stuff about safe spaces and getting triggered and people demanding this and demanding that and being racist against white people and all that sort of stuff.
Starting point is 00:37:58 This is all the stuff that they're supposed to take issue with and their entire careers are built on the backs of of exactly that, of just grievance. Just grievance, it's just... somebody told me, I saw a thing on the internet about some person that got up in somebody's face and said, hey, you're not allowed to do that. And the other person was like, bullshit, I am allowed to do it. And she just fucks off and writes a column about it. It's just, it's the dumbest thing. They'll like, get one of those forward chain emails about the, like, thoroughly
Starting point is 00:38:34 debunk stories about how England made it illegal to sing bar black sheep. And then she just starts with these the their their their their their th and th. And th. And th. And thes thinks thinks thinks with thinks with thinks thinks with thinks with their thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks, thinks, thinks, it's thinks, it's thinks, it's thinks, it's thinks, it's thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thus. It, it's thus. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's th. It's thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks thinks, it's thinks, it's thinks, it's thinks, it's thinks, it's just faugh. I's just faugh. I's just fa, it's just faugh. I's just faugh, it's thinks, it week writing columns about how it's illegal to look at sheep now like she just starts with these very flimsy premises and then just winds them up with nonsense anger about made up stuff uh... and then complains that uh... let the leftist uh... sensitive babies it's just... It's nonsense. Snowflakes.
Starting point is 00:39:06 Triggered snowflakes. So we are safe spaces. Should we try to end through a few more of these? Oh yeah, yeah, let's touch on a couple. I certainly have my own favorites of some of these. How would you like to pick the next one? Well, one that I really enjoyed at the time was a story that, you know, some of our American listeners might be familiar with.
Starting point is 00:39:31 There was in the very broad spate of shootings by the police of unarmed civilians for seemingly very little reason or provocation. Around the time that all of the Philandro Castile stuff was happening, there was a white Australian lady who called the police about something that was happening and she ran out when the police car showed up. She ran out to meet them and a cop just immediately shot her a bunch of times and killed her. Which you know it's very sad but no more or less sad than that just constantly happening in the states anyway. But you know I mean
Starting point is 00:40:20 and there was there was commentary at the time because a lot of people were genuinely shocked and there was a at the time, because a lot of people were genuinely shocked. And there was a lot of commentary from black people saying, oh, now you're shocked. Like now you're suddenly, this is suddenly like, hey, they did that for no reason at all. They shot, they shot a white lady for no reason at all. And you know, I also saw other people saying in a more sort of measured way like yes it's absolutely fucked up that people are looking at this and acting as though it's somehow different but if that's what it
Starting point is 00:40:56 takes for people to look at it and say there is something wrong with this system then we'll take it, you know. Miranda's take was a little, a little different from these, in the sense that she took a look at what had happened where an innocent woman had run out into the street and immediately been gunned down by the police solely for approaching them, unarmed in any way. And she said, because this blonde white Australian lady was gunned down by the police without provocation and while she was unarmed, that completely destroys all of the arguments of the movement known as Black Lives Matters. This article is utterly unhinged.
Starting point is 00:41:47 You got to admire, you got to admire even being able to get there. You know, like. So this headline, this is the headline. There's two sentences, very long for a headline, but I'm not getting the notes. A black cop killed an Australian white woman. How does that fit the Black Lives Matter narrative? What that guns are trigger happy, cops are trigger happy and way too ready to use gun violence. Yes it sure shows up that Black Lives Matter narrative of the cops kill too many people when they shouldn't and we wish they would stop.
Starting point is 00:42:24 It's utterly absurd. And the cops kill too many people when they shouldn't and we wish they would stop. It's utterly absurd and then the opening, oh for fuck sake so she's done it again. How a sweet blonde Australian yoga teacher in her pajamas came to be shot dead by American police at home in an apple and such as any apples to the mystery. She's a yoga teacher she's not some thug yeah like just fucking just say it say what you mean how does a white person how does this happen to white people they don't even look like criminals she starts with she asserts her thesis very strongly what we can safely assume is that Justin Dement, Damon, I'm not sure.
Starting point is 00:43:06 Her death was made more likely by an anti-police atmosphere whipped up in the US by the anarchic Black Lives Matter or BLM movement. It's a very self-perpetuating idea, isn't it, that by asking to not be shot, you are making it more likely that you are going to be shot. It's so fucking stupid. Just, oh, oh God. It is monumentally dumb. And of course, it's a perfect illustration of Miranda's brainworms, in the sense that she is unable
Starting point is 00:43:44 to look at an event like at an event like that and say either you know on the micro scale this is this is fucked up that this would happen to anyone an unarmed white woman an unarmed black woman you know a, anyone that it had been happening to on an extremely regular basis in the States. She's unable to look at it like that in the micro. She's also unable to look at it in the macro and say, this is clearly a serious problem on a large scale because it happens to anyone who approaches the police in, even in a non-threatening way,
Starting point is 00:44:31 the police is still absolutely petrified and incredibly, you know, eager to just pop off with the guns as soon as anything happens. She can't look at it in either of those ways. She has to only and exclusively look at it through the prism of which leftist group that I disagree with. You know, has a narrative that can be foiled by this. Who, you know, which one of my political opponents does this clash with their agenda? And like their agenda? And the way her mind works is just kind of, well shit, but, so she refuses to look at like the statistics on, you know, lethality of shootings from cops towards black people in America
Starting point is 00:45:22 is like vastly disproportionate. The stats speak for themselves. It's obscene how much more frequently they're injured and killed than white criminals doing similar or worse crimes. She doesn't think that's a sign that there's a problem with racism with the cops, but she does believe that one instance of a black American cop shooting a white person means that. Oh, proves the racism doesn't exist. Yeah, that's it. You're one one one one one one one one one one one one. that one. that one. that one. that one. that one. the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the instance. the the their. the the the the their. their. their. their. their. the the their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. their. the the the the the the the the th. th. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. te. th. t whole point doesn't exist. Yeah, that's it. You're one, you're one example. It's just utterly baffling. Well, yeah, I love the idea that in a country of, you know, hundreds of millions of people with heavily armed,
Starting point is 00:45:55 militarized police who are constantly shooting unarmed people and in crazy numbers and everything. Yeah, it's this singular example that just kind of disproves any, any sort of, um, it's th. It's or culture or any of that sort of stuff, which all in and of themselves are like huge, endemic issues that, that just have, you know, have taken decades and decades to get to the point where they're at now. But no, one blonde lady got killed. It's worth noting she's blonde. She was blonde, so it's not like in the dark you could have accidentally mistaken her for a lady who was not white she was definitely white at the time of the shooting yeah it's just it's remarkable with a lot of these like just just how unable she is at this point to see anything through any prism other than things
Starting point is 00:47:03 things that affect her and stoke her white grievance politics. Yeah, it's utterly ridiculous. Just to make me even angry, laughter sentences of the article, a black cop killing an unarmed white woman does not fit the narrative pushed by BLM activists, but they may as well have pulled the trigger. Uh, suck a turd. Just grab a whole turd, shove it into your mouth and suck on that turd.
Starting point is 00:47:33 Jesus Christ. And as I said before, I completely dispute the idea that that woman's death does not play into BLM's narrative because as I said I'm almost certain that a very large portion of the Black Lives Matters narrative is that they kind of wish that the cops would stop shooting unarmed citizens. Absolutely. I think if they if they were sort of not doing that so much across the board that maybe they wouldn't shot that lady and also they were sort of not doing that so much across the board, that maybe they wouldn't shot that lady, and also that they would not shoot a bunch of unarmed black people as well, and then maybe both parties could be happy.
Starting point is 00:48:14 I like that Miranda's idea of justice is that everybody gets shot while unarmed equally. We gotta get those stats even. Mmm, those stats even. True equality. It's very bad stuff. What else you got? What's one of your favorites? Well this one is a new one to me as of today was suggested to me by someone on Twitter who's at I cannot remember and I will not look up, but you know who you are and you did a great job. I commend you whoever you may be. If you do know after you listen to this please write into the show and we will not respond.
Starting point is 00:48:53 We won't, we'll ignore it and all of us will block you. So I don't know if you remember the animated Disney film from around, I gonna say 2003, 2004 maybe? Possibly I don't know, Spirit, Stallion of the Simeron. You know I actually I watched that for the first time very recently. I've never seen it but apparently Mara de Vine has. Actually it must come out in 2002 actually because I believe the... Oh I'm also gonna I'm also gonna stop you right there and say DreamWorks. Oh is it? Well there we go. So this is written July 4th 2002, Independence Day. She, writing for the Sydney Moore and Herald was I pointing about how there's two sorts of films that Hollywood is making at the moment, as epitomized in Spirit and Bend It Like Beckham.
Starting point is 00:49:52 Bend it like Beckham is a hopeful tale about what you can do if you put your back into it, whereas spirit is a depressing nightmare about the evils of white men, which for the last 15 years has been a very, very strong theme of hers that any time you actually acknowledge that white people did bad things in history, you're essentially a huge downer in the worst post in life. But that's... I'll also say that like, in this movie we are talking from the perspective of a horse in like fucking frontier times. So maybe. So that not even is what makes this article exceptional to me. It is one parenthetical statement that I absolutely
Starting point is 00:50:37 cannot get past. And I quote, Spirit comes from the dark heart of Hollywood, politically correct, history crushing, empty. It is the story of a wild stallion, mindless visible genitalia for some reason, who is captured by sadistic white soldiers in America's Wild West. It is a children's movie, an animated children's film. Why is she lamenting? There's no reason it can't be anatomically correct. We should see that big horse. an animated children's film, why is she lamenting... There's no reason it can't be anatomically correct.
Starting point is 00:51:07 We should see that big horse just flopping around. So much of that movie is the horse just running? I just don't know what she wanted. Why would you remark about that? Even if you noticed it while you were watching, you just like, oh, while I'm complaining about the fact that it makes white people look bad, I should include that I really wish th, th, thu th, th, th, th th thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho, th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th thi, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii, thi, thi, thi,, well while I'm complaining about the fact that it makes white people look bad, I should include that I really wish I saw a horse cock while watching this child's film. Yeah, do you think she would have liked, you know, all dogs go to heaven better if you could just see the dog's dicks all through the movie? Do you think she would have liked a lady in the tramp better if one of the dogs got a big red rocket during the spaghetti scene. Jesus Christ.
Starting point is 00:51:48 Well, how far? How far is this going to go? King Kong. I'm just trying to think of the animals with the worst dicks at the moment. Is there any animated movies with whales in them? Oh, you know the part from Fantasia with all the whales flying up into space? Yeah, I really wish I would have made the the the th a th. th. th. th of th of th of th. th of th of th. th. to have th to have th to have to have to have made have made have made have made have made have made have made have made to have made to have to have to have to have to have to have the their to have to have to have their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their their tape. I tra. I've tra. I've tra. Ia. Ia. Ia. Ia. Ia. Ia. I've tra. Ia. I've tra. I've tra. I was. I was ta. I was ta. I really wish I would have seen a five-foot penis. Well, I would say I would have made a joke about King Kong and that they would have had to name the movie King Dong, except for apparently, guerrillas have some of the smallest penises of the ape and monkey family. Huh. And I learned that. I think that was from, I believe I saw that from Eliza twee twee twe and monkey family. Huh. Well, I learned that. Oh, I think that was from, I believe I saw that from Eliza tweeting, perhaps. Yes, I believe she was talking about Mike Surnovich's gorilla mindset.
Starting point is 00:52:33 Oh, I'm sorry, it's pronounced Thurnovich. Mike Thurnovich is gorilla mindset. And she was saying, can anybody, anybody tell him about guerrillas? Because in fact, do we have... No, I don't have it. Anyway, but that was the gist of it. Thanks, Eliza for that memory that we're poorly sharing with everyone. Yeah, yep, we'll find it. We'll let people know. But yeah, so that was just, just very intriguing. Oh my goodness. Sorry, I've got it. Here we go folks. Dear friend of the show, Eliza Gajo says, does Mike Sertowe know Gorillas have the smallest penis compared to body size of any of the
Starting point is 00:53:24 great apes and arguably the least warlike? I'm going to say he doesn't actually know much about anything. So probably not. I think that's valid. I think that's very valid. Just a fun, fun footnote about this article is that she has her email address at the bottom divine Miranda at hotmail dot com so if you want to add her on MSN boot up MSN I think MSN got renamed to something
Starting point is 00:53:54 before it was shut down not sure what that was Windows Live or something I don't know but if you want to add it send us some winking I use is Microsoft Office Communicator. Hmm. Which is, I believe, the office, office equivalent, because I tell you who uses that shit, fucking nobody. It's a very, it's incredibly professional though to have Hotmail to Compi the end of your address as a nationally syndicated columnist. 2002 was a different time.
Starting point is 00:54:32 Also kind of weird that in this article she talks a lot about the virtues of bed like Beckham, whereas now of course she would hate on that soccerally talented child for being an immigrant because they're ruining the country. Well yeah she she would hate having the message forced down your throat that beautiful white blonde freckled Kira Knightley should be portrayed in a film as being friends with an immigrant which she would would not choose to be in non-Hollywood life. Yeah that sort of race mixing very distasteful. That's my guess that is my guess. that is my guess. That is my th th th th th th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, thi thi thu thu thi thu- thu- thu- thu- thu- thu- thu- thu- thrue. Well. She the c, thi. She thi. She thi thi thi thi thi. She thi. She thi. She thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thi thru thru' thru' thru' thrui thru' thruoooooooooo' thru' thrui thrui thrui thr in non-Hollywood life. Yeah, that sort of race mixing very distasteful. That's my guess.
Starting point is 00:55:08 That is my guess. Next up, another one which is new to me from today also sent in from someone from Twitter, who I did not make note of. Now that I've done it twice, I'm starting to feel bad about it. Well, I really like that you asked people for their help with these and then have seemingly deliberately made a point of not noting who these came from. So it's good. Keep it going. Yeah, I'm great.
Starting point is 00:55:37 So this article, we just read this headline to you once it loads. Oh boy. Uh, oh, I think I know what this one is. Okay, yeah. I don't know how to pronounce a name. I'm sorry, we're not a tennis person. Do any tennis fans listening to the show? Bethany Matik Sans is pathetic display, shame for female of the species.
Starting point is 00:56:03 I'll let you figure out the context when I read you the opening two paragraphs. I know a dislocated knee hurts. It happened to me once, skiing. But seriously, did American tennis player Bethany Maddox Sands have to swear and carry on so hysterically after her knee buckled at Wimbledon? Ah, the old hysterical woman. So, this entire article is just her telling a woman who just dislocated her knee that she shouldn't have made a fuss about it?
Starting point is 00:56:36 Yeah. Oh, God. This is, yeah. Verbatim from the article, get a grip, woman. You're shaming the female of the species. We're built for childbirth, we're not wimps. It's distressing to witness someone in agony, but there's also something instinctively distasteful that public cowardice.
Starting point is 00:56:54 Cowardous. I like the idea that when your knee just pops out a joint that it's cowardly to go, ah fuck this really hurts. And also I'll say as a side note, yes many women are built for childbirth. They don't stoically sit with a clenched jaw throughout childbirth in my experience. Do you want to tell us about your experience? Well I've heard some noises during tell us about your experience? Well I've I heard some noises during the birth of both my children. My wife shamed the female of the species by by being audible during childbirth. I couldn't believe it. I heard her all the way out there in the waiting room where I was smoking my cigar and trying to read the paper. And I heard her all the way out there in the waiting room where I was smoking my cigar and trying to read the paper. And I heard her all the way out there.
Starting point is 00:57:50 No, actually, I definitely heard her as one of our babies came out, as we were just discussing before we started recording the show, in the car. It is difficult to escape the shameful screams of pain from your wife when you're both in a medium-sized wagon. Yeah. I do get to run some red lights though, that was cool. Oh, that's badass. The only time I've ever done that is by accident.
Starting point is 00:58:17 I've never done it on purpose. But one day... Well, we had a, we had a midwife and she was like, no, like you can do it. I was like, come on, get out of here. She's like, no, no, she said, if you run like a red light and get a ticket on the way to the hospital, you can show the... And maybe this isn't true. Maybe this isn't true. But apparently you can show the police the birth certificate of your child from like five minutes after this red light that you ran and they go okay we get it. That is wild I know my
Starting point is 00:58:49 mom definitely got she managed to successfully have a red light ticket dismissed because my sister was in an ambulance for something and they said keep up with us so they were like speeding and driving through shit and she was like yeah the ambulance told me to and it worked. Man it was very cool. It was very cool. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay, th. Okay, th. Okay, th. Okay, th. Okay, th. Okay, th. Okay, th. Okay, th. Okay, th. Okay, th. Okay, th. Okay, the like speeding and driving through shit and then she was like, yeah, the ambulance told me to. And it worked. Oh man, it was very cool. So yeah, got to run several red lights. And there was my wife making all this noise. I'm sorry, who? Fuss. My wife? Thank you. Theo will never do that for some reason. Come on Theo. Get your act together. I'll tell you what, I'll try and I'll try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try try th th th thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. It was tho. It was tho. It was that was tho. It was that was that was tho. It was th. It was th. It was th. It was th. It was th. It was. It was. It was th. It was. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. It was very thea. thea. on, Theo. Get your act together. I'll tell you what, I'll try and I'll try and sneakily record Theo saying it off air one day.
Starting point is 00:59:31 Good. And then I'll play it to the world. Um, so yes, look, we should, you know, just point out. My wife made a lot of noise while she was giving birth to both of our children. And frankly, to to to to to to th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the the. I'll the the the the the. I'll the. She made a fuss, she made a scene. I don't know, I just, look, this this ties back to my to my central thesis about Miranda Divine, which we should probably wrap up the show on. Which is, as I said in the start, I just don't understand what it must be like
Starting point is 01:00:11 to have stewed your brain in like the combative conflict politics, that you apparently spend your every waking moment reading and thinking about, that you are just unable to see any normal human thing happening, any kind of interaction, any kind of display of any form of emotion without immediately going. What overt act of political correctus has spurred this. Yeah, trying to fit everything into the culture war in some fashion. I know, wouldn't it be exhausting? I mean, like, and again, that's, that's where, again, I'm just staggered by the hypocrisy of people like Miranda Divine and Mark Latham who are constantly, you know, saying that everybody, everybody to the left in politics is obsessed with identity politics and taking offense at things and being triggered
Starting point is 01:01:14 and all that sort of stuff. You can go back through years of Miranda Devine's writing and find hundreds and hundreds of words per column written about a perceived slight. You know, every other one is like, somebody told me this, here's 600 words of why that makes me mad. There's no real evidence in any of them. Like they are truly opinion pieces in their in their purest sense. Well I mean that's what they are. She's not a journalist, she's a columnist, but every single colonist that writes for News Corp in some fashion has just been driven so far up their own ass by praise from the most racist dipshits to live that they believe themselves to be journalistic sources of truth instead of just fucking crazy people standing on
Starting point is 01:02:08 soapboxes screaming at people in the subway. Like it's it's utterly insane. I think because I I subconsciously maybe skipped over all the really bad ones because they're all really depressing. Before we go I'm just going to quickly whip through and summarize some of her more, just astoundingly fucked ones. Some of the more odious opinions. So she wrote an article in, God, my name's being a hot turd. She wrote an article in 2011 when a Labour Senator Penny Wong, who is a big-time
Starting point is 01:02:53 gay, announced she was going to be having a child. And of course, instead of Miranda Devine seeing this and just living her life. She decided to get outraged about the idea that anyone would celebrate the fact that she was having a child. There's no straight people who do that. No, absolutely not. There's no extremely lavish and trashy celebrations of letting people know that you are pregnant with a child or letting people know that you have found out what what sexy child is going to be or letting people know that a baby has been born or letting people know. It just goes on and on as far as the... Let me redo the opening of this because, uh, she whips this off to a has been born or letting people know. It just goes on and on as far as the...
Starting point is 01:03:45 Let me read you the opening of this because she whips herself into a frenzy and then immediately notes that her thesis is based on nothing. You'd think that no politician had ever had a child before. We're supposed to ignore Tony and Margie Abbott's three daughters because every time we're seen with them is some sort of unfair snub to Julia Gillard and a reflection on her marable status. The traditional heterosexual null of a nuclear family, children is something to be kept
Starting point is 01:04:11 in the closet like an embarrassment. Tolerance is gone back to front. It is no longer good enough to accept with our criticism, female politicians in fact. Now we have to downplay traditional marriage for fear a a a their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, toe, their, their, toe, toe, their, their, their, their, their, tho, and tho, and tr-a, and tr-a, and the, and tr-s, and tr-s, and tr-s, and tr-a, and their, and tr-a, and tr-s, and tr-s, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and their, and their, and their, and their, and their, is their, and their, is their, is their, is a the, is a tr-s, is a truee, truee, trueeo-s, todico-s, trueeol-s, truee.e.e.e.efficient, truee.e.e, truee, truee, truee, truee, to downplay traditional marriage for fear of causing offense. No one can be a wife or husband anymore. Everyone is a partner. The unorthodox situation of a lesbian artificially inseminated with a sperm of a male acquaintance. We are supposed to lord as if it were the second coming. The wonderful precursor of what the New York Times was lauded as the post-marital future. Well no.
Starting point is 01:04:41 Wong to her credit has not politicized her private life. So this was just her going, angry, angry, angry, angry, angry, oh but Penny Wong's not done this. Oh, but nothing. Yeah. Yeah. So, I mean, it's already pretty bad. She spends a couple of paragraphs talking about how it's illegal to call someone your wife,
Starting point is 01:04:59 which... Yeah, imagine thinking that. Like, number one, you can't do the Borat voice and say, my but, no, it doesn't, you absolutely shouldn't. No, it's dog shit, it's terrible, it doesn't work. No one will get the reference. I'll just think you're Lithuanian or something. But yeah, like, like, imagine thinking that anyone you talk to, like, and I feel like it's worth noting, the people like you and me, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, th, you, you, th, you, you, you, you're, you're th, you're th, you're thi, you're thi, you're thi, you're, you're thi, you're thi, you shouldn't, you shouldn't, you shouldn't, you shouldn't, you shouldn't, you shouldn, you shouldn, you shouldn, you shouldn, you shouldn, you shouldn, you shouldn, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you're, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th, th. th. thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thin, thi, that, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, th thinking that anyone you talk to, like, and I feel like it's worth noting, that people like you and me, we're raging leftists, right? We are absolutely the types of people who think that you should actually take other people's thoughts and feelings into consideration.
Starting point is 01:05:42 I know that that's a wild revolutionary concept. But yeah, that you should actually think about how your your speech and actions affect other people and that if somebody said to me, actually these are the pronouns I would like you to refer to me by, you know what I'd say? I'd go, all right. Cool. Great. That'd be the end of the fucking conversation. Yeah. Point being though that the people th th th th th th th th th that th th that th th th th th th th th th that th th th th th th th th the that the the the that the that that the that you that you that you that you that you should the the the that you should that you should that you should that you should that you should that you should that you should that you should that you should that you should that you th. that you th. th. th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th th the the the the the the the the the the the the the that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that that to me by, you know what I'd say? I'd go, all right. Cool, great. And that'd be the end of the fucking conversation. Yeah. Point being though, that the people like you and me are the sorts of people who actually think that that stuff matters and would actually take that into consideration.
Starting point is 01:06:16 And we think the idea is fucking ludicrous that no one's allowed to be called a wife or a husband anymore. Yeah, like it's just completely invented. They just, they don't. Like people say partner for like a bunch of different reasons, no one is forcing anyone else to describe anyone as a partner. Fucking, lesbians, have wives, gay dudes, have husbands. Like, fucking, it's not a thing. These people are just... Just de facto relationships, like so many straight people have. Like, like, like, they, like, like, they, like, they, like, they, like, they, like, they, like, like, they, they, like, they, they, like, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they they they're they they they they they they don't, they don't, they they they they they they they they don't, they they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, they don't, th. They're just, th. It's just thi. It's just thi thoo, like thooo, thoooo, thooo thoooooo, they're just they don't they're just, they don't, thing. These people are just... Just de facto relationships, like so many straight people have. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:06:47 Like, it's fine. Who gives a fuck? Who? As you said, it comes back to what is supposed to be, the conservative thing or the libertarian thing of like, yeah, however somebody wants to live their life, just shut the fuck up and let him get on with it. So I mean, so that's that's that's that's that's not's not's not's not's not's not's not's not's not's not's not's not's not's not that's not that's not that's not that's not that's not that's not even that's not even that's not even that's not even the the most the most not even the most not even the most not even their their life, just shut the fuck up and let him get on with it. So I mean, so that's not even the most badger part about this article. It's because she pivots it.
Starting point is 01:07:09 After rambling for quite a few paragraphs, she goes, as a Catholic, I believe the push for same-sex marriage is not about enhancing the lives of gay couples. In countries where it has been legalized, there's been no rush to the altar. The issue is largely is is largely is largely is largely is largely is largely is largely is largely is largely is likely is likely is likely is likely is likely is likely is likely li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li li. their is lii, their is lii, their is lii, their is lia, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thea. thi. thi. the the the thi. the the their, their, the, marriage is a symbolic act, so whatever. It is simply a political tool to undermine the last bastion of bourgeois morality morality. The traditional nuclear family, you only had to see the burning streets of London last week to see the manifestation of a fatherless society. What? The 2011 London riots were because there are more single moms in Europe. Who? I feel like that's a bit of a signature bit is her sort of ending on this note that is almost a non sequitur of.
Starting point is 01:08:02 And that's why these people are responsible for this violence. It's utterly baffling. It's quite a rhetorical flourish. And her, like so the actual envy article here is, uh, Wong and her partner will no doubt be fine mothers with financial and personal competence to provide their children to stay all loving upbringing despite not having a father in the home. Though Wong says he will be known to the child. Individually, these things work themselves out. Allowances are made, extra effort applied. Okay, well there she's applying that lesbians have to work harder
Starting point is 01:08:31 because without a man around the house, I don't know, the kids won't be able to change it, I don't know. Oh, and then she says, love, to, to, to, to, to, to, to, to love, to love, to love, to love, to, to, to to to, to to to to to to to to to to the to to their, their, their, their, their, the their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, tho, tho, tho, tho, tho. tho. tho. thoooooooooo. thoooooooo. A. A. A. A. A. A. is the loftiest of ideals is wrong. Like why don't these people understand the reason that we celebrate like coming out or gay couples having kids is because because of people like her, very specifically people like her dad actually, Google him, Frank Devine, said some pretty horrible things, made it impossible for people to previously do those things. It's an inherently brave political act still to be, particularly in the political realm, to be like, yeah, I'm gay, and I have kids, and that's, it's to be celebrated because there's still persecution being done. Like, it's not that we're saying one is inherently better than the other.
Starting point is 01:09:22 Like, well, I mean, I think definitely gay couples raise better kids. That's just how it is.. But, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, but, th, th is. But, th is. th is. th is. th is, th is, th is, th is, th is, th is, th is, th is, to be, th is, thi, thi, to be, to be, to be, to be, to be, the they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, they, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, their, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, thi, their, the than the other, like, well, I mean, I think definitely gay couples raise better kids. That's just how it is. But I mean, in terms of... Here's a strange example of this, and we'll have to just touch on this and then wrap it up. But as a perfect example of when you see people like, for example, former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott saying things like, oh, well there used to be discrimination against
Starting point is 01:09:51 gay people in our society, but thank goodness that's all over. Now you don't need to get married. You see, you see like, conservative people seemingly genuinely trotting out the idea that in in you know all Western societies that gay people are considered completely equal and faced no discrimination and nobody has shit shouted at him on the street or nobody has trouble coming out to their families because their families say horrible shit about gay people all the time and all that sort of stuff. Um, and so really weird example, there was their families say horrible shit about gay people all the time and all that sort of stuff.
Starting point is 01:10:31 As a really weird example, there was the whole Kevin Spacey deal. Oh God, yeah. This week, where in the midst of all of the Harvey Weinstein stuff and a lot of the accusations that have surfaced in the wake of that of people coming out to to actually confront people who had sexually assaulted or sexually harassed them in the past. An actor, a male actor came out and said, when I was like 14 years old, Kevin Spacey kind of tried to fuck me. Which, according to fuck me. Which, according to apparently a lot of people in showbiz is one of these many, many, many open secrets that Kevin Spacey effectively prays on male teenage actors, and very young ones as well. And Kevin Spacey put out a press release in which he said,
Starting point is 01:11:29 hey, I don't remember that. If it did happen, that's no good. My bad. But also it's time to admit that I have had love affairs with men and women over the years. And currently I live as and identify as a gay man. And absolutely all of the headlines about Kevin Spacey were immediately overtaken as Kevin Spacey comes out as gay. Kevin Spacey makes emotional statement in which he says that he is out and he is gay.
Starting point is 01:12:03 And it's just the kind of thing that makes you go, well, yeah, if everybody in every position of public life and power and fame and politics and all that sort of stuff is completely accepted as completely equal, no matter what their sexuality is, then isn't it weird that an adult man saying, oh yeah I'm gay, immediately dwarfed and silenced these accusations of incredibly unsavory and predatory behavior? Absolutely.
Starting point is 01:12:36 Soly because people were, it was so, it was so shocking to people the idea that a famous man would be gay. I mean, I think the thing is that for these conservatives, their litmus test for no discrimination means that because now they're not allowed to scream, hey faggot at gay people they see on the street, all the discrimination is gone. That's where their watermark was. Now they were like, you know, potentially, maybe the police will chase it up for you. That's the little war at they believe that it's completely disappeared It's just They're dinosaurs and I can't wait from die out
Starting point is 01:13:11 But there are some lovely people that at the same age That I don't want to die out. So it's kind of tough. You know what are we you know? What do we want to happen there? Who can say? Well look, I'll just, I'll close this out by saying that Miranda's writing is ridiculous. There is a lot of American conservative ridiculous writing that gets picked up, but I feel like she doesn't get enough credit for being as bat shit willfully ignorant as she actually is. And there was a new entry into the canon of Australian political hilarious stuff recently, which was when noted dipshits, Lyle Shelton, Mark Latham and Miranda Devine were all on stage in one place at one time to argue the no case as to whether or not same-sex marriage should be legalized in Australia at an event. Mark Latham's chair either broke or fell
Starting point is 01:14:18 off the back of a stage and he fell down taking all his friends with him. It was very, very funny and dear castmate on the show Theo almost immediately set up a URL that is chair. that fail and you should check it out before the immortalization of that beautiful little moment. It'll yeah bring you a little bit of joy in an otherwise bleak and horrifying hellscape. Yeah. So yeah, check out some of Miranda's writing if you'd like to see how much being insanely focused on right-wing, hashtag white genocide, grievance politics takes you.
Starting point is 01:14:59 Do we have a crime pass for this week? Oh, you should commit white genocide. I was going to say you should be able to drive through a red light. Uh, oh yeah. Drive through a red light and when the police pull you up, you say, oh my wife is having a baby even if there's no one in the car with you. Well, I mean you could be going to meet your wife, that's still pretty plausible Yeah. My wife's having a baby, a little practice sounding really worried. Oh, she's giving birth right now.
Starting point is 01:15:29 No, you gotta be realistic. You gotta be all blokey about it. Oh, the fucking, oh, the ball and chain, she's bloody. Oh, me missus is spitting another mouth to feed my rut. Oh, fuck it. Hope they they th th th th th th th they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they they th. I th. I th. I tho tho tho tho tho tho tho' tho that. I tho' tho' that's tho' tho' tho' tho' tho' tho' thatheatheatheatheatheat. Oh, I that. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, th. Oh, th. Oh, th. Oh, th. Oh, tho, tho, tho, tho, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, that, thoooooooooooo' that, that, that, that, that, that, all right fucking. Oh. Hope they give me a raise down at the racism factory. Yeah, no try that one out and right into the show let us know how it went. I mean if that doesn't work you got a crime pass. So you just show them the crime pass and then...
Starting point is 01:15:57 Yep. We've discussed how the crime pass work before. Yep. Get your phone out. Fast forward through to the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the very the the the the the the the the the the the the the through to the very last two minutes of this particular episode while the cop stands next to your car. And I'm going to tell you now, you will not make it to the end of the recording before you are detained. So, I don't know, maybe get your lawyer to check out of the show. He can tell you whether or not it's binding. Oh it is. Best of luck. It's a crime-It's thiiiiiiiiii. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. to thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. th. th. to to th. th. th. th. th. th. th. th. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. thi. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. to. toee. toe. to. to. to. tee. te. to. te. te. te. t definition. Yeah. So on that note, we will leave you folks. Goodbye, dear friends.
Starting point is 01:16:28 Thank you very much for your time. Yeah, don't read too much Miranda or it'll start to cook your brain. No, absolutely don't do it. It's ruined mine. Hmm. Poor Ben in his Swiss cheese brain. Oh, so many holes. All right, folks, we'll see you next week. See you later.
Starting point is 01:16:47 Don't forget to rate and subscribe on iTunes if you're one of the weird folks who rates a thing on the internet. Uh, I mean, normal people rate things on the internet. But I mean, by all needs, please do that to this podcast. Fine, count the stars and press on the fifth star.
