Hello, Clituritur fans.
Welcome back to the Fairy Smut episodes.
This is Jen.
As I mentioned last week, Kim, Lynn and I will be back soon with season two of boozy book
guzms, but in the meantime, we are treating you to some magical fairy smut. I have my favorite twin
sister, Fairy Smut connoisseurs with me again this week. Hello, ladies. Well, hello there. This is
Amy. And this is Jenny. So before we head back to Prithian, what are we drinking tonight?
Okay, we are drinking what is the most iconic line in the whole book called the Hello, Farah Darling.
So what is in this one?
It is an ounce of vodka, an ounce of lime juice,
two ounces of shamboard raspberry liqueur,
two ounces of Sprite,
and then we do a drop of purple food coloring
just so we can get the color of his eyes.
Mix it and serve it over ice.
Oh, that sounds darling.
This is incredible.
It's so good.
We might be a little hammered after this
because this may be a three-hour show.
We got a lot of book to cover, ladies.
Yeah, we do.
This book was so long, but I loved every second of it.
Same.
I was like, and I'm realizing this, reading these Sarah Mazz is such an incredible writer.
You're reading it and you're like, it's going to end.
I'm sad.
Like, I don't know.
It's been a really cool journey.
But we are back at Spring Court, and this is three months after the downfall of Amarantha.
And poor little rich Fahara has to wear beautiful clothes and plan parties,
and as well as her upcoming wedding to the man she thinks she loves.
She hates every minute of it, of course.
I will note, even though they're engaged,
the mating bond has not formed between her and Tanlin yet,
and that is something that she's thinking about.
We also meet Farah's new BFF, I-Aanthi,
who happens to love picking out cute outfits and wedding planning.
So for someone who hates it,
she's a pretty decent friend to have around.
She is a high priestess of Prithian.
So we learned that there are 12 high priestesses in total.
Mainly what they do is that among the high fay,
they oversee ceremonies and rituals.
They record histories and legends and advise lords and ladies in the matters of all things
great and trivial.
With regard to Tamlin and Fah, it's pretty trivial.
I mean, she's like picking out her outfits and her jewelry and stuff from what I can tell here.
But the main thing I noted was that Lucian doesn't like her.
Lucian hates her. And you know what? The thing about Ayanthe is at this point in the book, we think she's a pretty cool gal and she's taking Fyra under her wing. But she's doing these little things that you're like, hmm, I don't know about this. I'm skeptical. Yeah. She's a little sketch. We also see that Tamlin is getting controlling. And this is the side of Tamlin that we didn't so much see in the first book. He will not let Fahira leave the house without guards all around her. And she's getting pretty sick of it.
She wants to be a part of the rebuilding after the 50-year curse.
And she wants to help the people.
She finally convinces Tamlin to let Lucian take her to a nearby village where she's hoping she can help.
But this is interesting.
I mean, they are kind of worshipping her as a hero.
You hear whispers, oh, it's the curse breaker.
Right.
And she's trying to help them.
And they won't let her.
Every time they say, can we please help?
The villagers say the debt is paid.
We will not let you lift a finger.
I feel like Tamlin low-key was like, do not let her help you guys.
He knew.
Yeah, Tamlin was behind us.
He's like, fellas, fellas.
She comes to you.
Yes, they know.
He said some centuries ahead of him and they have crept for that.
She was really disappointed and she really starts sinking into this downward spiral.
She's having these horrible nightmares and she's waking up vomiting.
And again, this, I have to say,
say Sarah Maas is writing of the PTSD that everyone suffered under the mountain. A lot of times in a
book series, like these bad things happen and then the next book comes out and you never think about
the first book again. But I will say, you know, the aftermath of what happened there is
almost its own character in the book. Oh, absolutely. Right. Everybody was affected by it.
And it's really changed everyone in the way they make decisions and their own torment. They're still
trying to work through.
So.
Well, and I thought it was interesting because that's when we really started seeing Tamlin
in a different light because he would not get up or even acknowledge.
She even said that she believed that he was awake, but he was pretending to be asleep when
she was waking up and he was just trying to ignore everything that was happening to her.
Yeah, I mean, he's because of his own PTSD.
He's kind of a shitty boyfriend.
I mean, from what we're seeing.
Yeah.
How the time's deterrent.
I know.
It used to be like really hot and nice.
And now it's like where there's some chinks in the armor.
It's like all of our husbands pretending to be asleep when we get up and...
The baby's crying.
Exactly.
Well, the day is here.
Dum, dumb, da-da-dam.
So it's wedding day.
Fyra is in this hideous wedding gown that...
And I'm like picturing my big fat Greek wedding times a thousand.
Oh, for sure.
Just this monstrosity.
It looks like a giant cream.
Puff.
And she even just, she hates it.
She hates it.
I don't know what happened to her backbone.
And I think part of it is her sadness.
Like she's just going along to get along.
Yeah.
But she's going down the aisle and she's looking pretty miserable.
She's totally miserable.
And here's what pricked my ears about Aianthe because she asked one thing that she asked.
She let Ayanthe run the show, but just no red rose that reminds me of blood.
And she goes down the aisle, sees all the red roses.
And I'm like, wow.
a bitch.
Yeah.
Yeah.
She's a very devious and sly.
But she's having a panic attack.
And she's trying to figure out how do I get out of this wedding?
Tamlin sees the look in her eye and he has a moment where he realizes like she doesn't want to be here.
And then we hear this crack of thunder and the most beautiful man she's ever seen.
Purrs into her ear.
Hello, Faradale.
And like the true friend, Dianthea, she goes, poof.
She's gone.
She was like a rat on a sinking ship.
She ran out of there.
It was a puff of smoke where Ianthi was.
He did the best, I object and then took her away.
Yeah.
Yeah, it was just like that.
Does anyone object?
I do.
So he tells Tamlin, you know, it's been long enough.
It's we we had the steal.
It's my turn to have Fyra.
And she's begging Tamlin to stop Riesin.
And, you know, per yush, he kind of whines a little bit.
He doesn't do anything.
Yeah, he was like, all right, have fun.
You know, let me pack your bags for you.
I was like, you're an asshole.
So Rysand says, hang on.
And then poof, they're like in the night court.
And Fara's first thought is it's the most beautiful place she's ever seen.
She is just really wowed because, you know,
all she's heard about the night.
this place is that it's it's a place of nightmares under the mountain was modeled after it and so she's surprised
at how beautiful it is it's beautiful and temperate even though it's up in the mountains it's like just
encrusted with starlight and the winters are mild and the windows are all open and she just feels for the
first time that it's a lot more freeing than she would have ever thought so on her first visit to
the night court the following things happen
Rysand starts teaching her to read and to use her fairy powers.
So he's teaching her how to shield her thoughts so that he can't sneak in and see what she's thinking all the time.
Right.
She meets his adorable and very charming cousin Morrigan, who clearly also wants to be her BFF.
And you just kind of fall in love with Morgan right away.
Oh, she's so sweet.
Oh, right away.
Yeah.
She's a girl's girl.
Yeah, yeah, she is.
He takes her to his office and shows her a map.
There's clearly a space missing on the map, but he does tell her war is coming and the wall that separates the Faye world from the mortal world will likely come down if that happens.
And Rysand wants Faye were to find out if Tamlin will fight with the night court if it comes to that.
And he also believes that she has special powers because she got a little bit of something from every single one of the high lords.
And he wants to help her train and develop those powers.
So already he's treating her with more equality and respect than Tamara.
Yeah, but you know, it's Fairo, so she's slow on the uptake.
She's miserable.
Always miserable.
She's a little dim.
She doesn't want to like this guy.
And so she's pretty ungrateful about it and makes him feel like a creep.
And there's a moment where he's like, you really still don't like me even after I, like, saved your life and saved you from the wedding from L.
like, why can't we be friends, you know?
Stay with darling.
But then he embraces his, their communication is very flirtatious, even in these moments.
You know, their flirting is more just kind of bickering.
He has to leave because there's an attack on all the high priestesses.
They were slain.
But he leaves her to work on reading and writing, and here's what he tells.
Here's what he tells her.
Rysand is the most handsome high priestess.
Lord. She has to write these sentences over and over. Rissand is the most delightful, High Lord.
Resan is the most cunning High Lord. So she does it over and over and over. And then he takes her back home
and night court clothes. I envision them as kind of I dream of genie. I was going to say genie.
Like, you know, harem pants and a crop top. And she liked it. She liked the style.
Because the spring court feels a little Bridgeton or like very fancy. And, you know,
You know, that's not really favorite style.
And never has been.
So this is where she goes back to the spring court,
and I'm starting to realize this is the direction we're heading, right?
Like, you know, Tamlin, bad, rescind, good.
Like, you're starting to realize, like, Sarah's taking us on a left turn here.
Tamlin gives her the Spanish Inquisition when she comes back.
Yeah, she's like, all she wanted to do is have a little bit of sex.
And he's like, what did you guys do?
What did you guys say?
And she's like, I just wanted to have some sex.
She wanted some good loving, and he's like, sit down.
We got a lot to talk about.
So she makes her tell him everything that she saw while she was there.
And she does.
She tells him everything.
But then in the passing weeks, you know, her powers are growing and they're kind of coming out sideways.
Like, you know, little things are happening.
And she's really unhappy.
So when Riesan comes back for the next visit, like, because she's lost weight and she just looks like shit.
And there's no fight left in her.
and he's getting a little worried about her.
Yeah.
So the tithing ceremony comes up.
And I was wondering if, Amy, if you could kind of talk about the tithing ceremony and what it is and like the something significant happens in this moment that I wanted to make sure we talked about.
Yeah, the tithing ceremony, it's disturbing to read through because it's unnecessary, right?
Like so it's only the spring court.
No other courts do this tithing ceremony.
I mean, what it is is every subject has to present a tithe or a portion of whatever they do.
So if you're a baker, you have to bring, you know, breadbasket or a few apple orchard.
You have to bring some caramel apples.
So you have to bring like a portion of whatever you do and present it to Tamlin, like at his feet.
So gross.
And Fahara thinks this is gross.
And she's like, I don't feel comfortable with this.
Why do we do this?
And he only says, we're doing this because this is how we have always.
done it. He doesn't really give her a good reason. She's like, we're sitting on like piles of money
and jewelry and why are we doing this? And he just dismisses her. And so this poor water wraith comes up
in her inky black hair. And if you were listening to the audio book, she talks like this.
He's very creepy with her, you know, so she comes up and she says that there's no fish in the pond
that I can present. And Tamlin is like, no bitch, you have to bring some fish. And she's like,
there's no we have I have no fish to present and he said you have 30 days or else and we don't know
what or else means but she does and she is distraught and so she's she is leaving and Fahara's like
from one poor bitch to another poor bitch I get it so I'm not happy with this and I know what
it's like to be poor I know what it's like to have nothing and you turn her away like that and so
he just basically said I'm not going to make any exceptions no exceptions she kind of on the deal
goes after this water wraith and she says boo i got you here are some bibles i'm going to give you some
a juries and uh and the water race like what's the catch and she said i have no catch i just i've just
have been there um you know i got you boo and so the water wraith says um and she's always wondering
if there's a catch and so she but no fairer doesn't expect anything in return which is very
significant. It comes back later. So she gives her the jewelry and she says, I will not forget this,
neither will my sisters. And so. Or shadowy. Yeah. And so even she goes back to her dressing rooms and
Tamlin is big mad. He's pouting like a little bit. Yeah. Because he feels undermined and he's,
because he's kind of small. She undermined him and he's not man enough to be like confident in
her. But she holds her own. You got to give it to her. Like she has.
had a little bit of backbone in this scene. So like I said, it comes back to her in a pretty
significant way later on in the book. Yeah. Thank you. That was perfect. So it's really hard for me not
to call them Tammy Faye, you know, like in mind of playing them together. Because I write out
Tam and Faye. Yeah, you know that it would be. If they were like a modern celebrity couple,
would be like Tammy Faye. They have a big fight over the watery thing. He, like any abusive boyfriend would.
he buys her a gift, you know, to apologize.
I'm so sorry.
And he buys her these portable paints.
This is where we kind of see some of the suffering.
Tamens, I can't tell if he's suffering from PTSD,
if this is a result of that,
or he's just a misogynistic narcissist
that can't let a woman have a say.
Either way, Fahara shouldn't have to put up with that shit.
I think what changed him the most,
like him seeing Fahara killed under the mountain
is what really made him move
in a more protective space.
He was traumatized.
Maybe he is overcompensating for the fact that he didn't do anything for her under the
mountain.
That's kind of what I thought about it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That is a good call out.
But she tells him in this moment, I am drowning.
And the more you treat me like this, you may as well be shoving my head under the
water.
He has an epic rage meltdown where everything in the room explodes and flies everywhere.
Oh, abuse it much.
Not realizing she's doing it, she builds a shield over herself.
with magic powers.
So it's almost like she's in a protective bubble.
And she thought for a moment that Tamlin put the shield over her to keep her safe.
No, no.
He would have let her hurt her.
He would have hurt her.
Yeah, he didn't because he couldn't get to her.
He couldn't pass the shield.
But then, of course, you know, he's endlessly sorry.
And for the next few weeks, it's nothing but worshipping her.
And they're having great sex.
It's all makeup stuff that happens in what's becoming a pretty abusive relationship.
Right.
So, and meanwhile, he, behind her,
her back, he's making decisions about her life. He's talking to Lucian because she's asked, like,
can I train and learn how to use my powers? And he's like, no, no, you just need to look pretty.
That's dangerous. And planned parties. You know, like, go with shushu. Yeah. And so she's hearing them
make these decisions about her without her input. And Ianthes in the room with the guys.
Of course she is. So, I mean, run, favor, run. Because this is not good. Get out of there.
So then one day they're going out to investigate an unknown threat and she begs to go with.
Like, please just come on.
I'm dying to got cabin fever.
I got to get out of here.
And he says absolutely not.
And he locks down the house.
Like he basically imprisons her and she cannot leave the home.
And the claustrophobia gets to her and she passes out.
She's so upset by it.
The next thing we hear, Rysand's cousin Morgan,
and Alice are having a conversation and Alice is saying to her,
would you please take care of her and keep her safe?
So Morgan leaves with Fahra and takes her to a neutral territory where Ressand is waiting.
And they make it a point to say they're intentional about not breaking any rules to avoid war between the courts.
But they did everything by the book so that, you know, Tamlin didn't have a reason to go attack the night court.
Right.
They get back to the night court and that's when Fahira realizes she really doesn't ever want to go back to
the spring court like she was i know would you guys though like fuck that place no no but then she's with this
other guy who she's not so sure about like she's in a deal she's got herself a little bit of a pickle yeah
so riss ann says you can stay as long as you want and i'd like to offer you a job i want your help
in in this mission we're on she's non-committal and he says you know what just take some rest
think it over i've got business in another part of my lands and she jumps up and says take me with you
She does not want to wander around the castle, reading books.
She doesn't want to get stuck there again.
And he says, if I do, you can never speak of what you see.
And she says, you got yourself a deal.
I got to get out of here.
So I've asked Jenny, the place he takes her, this was one of my favorite descriptive parts of the book.
I mean, Sarah Maas's writing is, I mean, just incredible.
So, Jen, would you tell us about they go to the city of St.
Starlight. And can you talk about what that is and what it means to resan and some of the history
behind it? Of course. So the city is called Valaris and it's a very beautiful but secret city located in the
Night Court of Prithian. So it's also known as the Court of Dreams and the City of Starlight. It was actually
built 5,000 years ago by the ancient High Lord from the Court of Nightmares that wanted peace and
prosperity for his people. And he was able to keep it a secret by him and his heirs by casting many
spells over the city so that anybody, including traitors that came in, couldn't speak of it when they
left. But the city itself was built on steep hills surrounded by sharp red mountains and the
Cydra River, just completely gorgeous. And you guys, this is a fun fact because a lot of fans
believe that Valeris was inspired by a real town in Switzerland called Zermat. It's a
What? Yes. Z-E-R-M-A-T-T. If you Google it, you will see why. It is the most gorgeous, charming city in real life I've ever seen.
I'm totally Googling that. Yeah. That's so sure. So, Reese actually has two homes there. It's the town home, which is his personal residence and the House of Wind that's at the top of the mountain for his official business. He then brings Favre to explore one of the four market squares in the city. And this market.
it is called the rainbow of Valaris.
And its brightly colored buildings are home to artists, musicians, actors, and dancers.
It just brings the whole city to life.
It's the heartbeat of Valeris.
She absolutely loves it.
And she marvels at how the city is literally untouched by Amarantha when Amarantha has
destroyed all of the other cities.
And then we eventually learn that Rissan actually sacrificed himself to protect it.
And he kept it secret by being.
Amarantha's whore for 50 years.
And before Amarantha stole his powers, he ended up throwing a shield over the city and kept it protected by his inner circle.
When Farah learns this, she actually blames him for saving the city at the cost of others.
Which I find ironic because Farah did the exact same thing when she was under the mountain to save Tamlin and killed those fairies.
So like, yeah, this is war, bitch.
You have to sacrifice some things to protect others.
So, yeah, so he sacrificed himself to keep Valeris safe and his people protected.
This is a place that I want to visit.
So Switzerland, ladies.
Of course.
Yes.
And I think another thing to note about this city is he is incredibly casual, his leadership
style.
And he's definitely an admired leader, but anyone can walk up and talk to him.
There's no pomp and circumstances.
They're not cowering in the streets when he walks by or they're not bowing.
I mean, he's just another city dweller who takes care of them.
And you really are starting to fall in love with Rysand and realize like, this guy's a good person.
Yeah.
And Farah was like thinking that this guy was a monster and she's putting two and two together that all of these people just really genuinely love him.
And so she's, you know, she's dim.
She's still working on it.
getting there. She gets there. Spoiler alert. We eventually are going to like that. Finally.
She gets there in chapter 55. Woohoo. He finally like. It's so true. It does take 55 chapters.
That's not, that's not wrong. But it's an enjoyable journey to get there for sure. So after he does
take her to his town home and she is kind of surprised. He's a high lord. It's a nice townhome,
but it's not the castles, you know.
So then he takes her to the house of Wend on the high mountain top.
He flies her there.
And she gets to meet his inner circle.
So these are the people in his inner circle.
And the book really revolves around these people the rest of the time.
So Morrigan, who we've already met is there.
Cassian and Asriel are winged allarians and warriors.
And what I can tell they're pretty sexy.
Uh-huh.
They're sexy.
They're the bad boys.
Oh yeah, they are called that.
And then Amaran is a little weirdo.
She's...
She's...
She's totally emo.
Yeah, yeah, she's a little emo.
And she does say like she was...
Once had a different body much like Fyra.
So she was a fairy that was made.
But they don't really tell you a lot about the backstory there.
You just know she hasn't always been this way.
But they have dinner.
Farah fits in.
She loves the...
inner circle, they're fast friends, and she says, I'm in. I'll join you. And so everybody's happy to
hear that. The first thing that they need to do is they need to meet with the bone carver. He lives in
the prison and Amrin refuses to go. She was in that prison for many, many years. And she just can't go back.
But so ultimately, Risa and Fara go there. It's kind of a test for Fara. And she actually chickens out
their first time. They're on their way there and she has a panic attack and they turn around.
She's like, nope, nope, I got a nope right out of here, right now.
Yeah, no judgment.
Faye ride, I've done the same damn thing.
I would have been fine planning the parties and wearing the cute outfits, but here we are.
You would have been happy being Tamlin's little pet.
Yes, he's hot, he's good and bad.
He showers me with gifts when he's mean to me.
I like it.
The bark like a dog.
Whoa.
So Amrin brings her this.
amulet basically and says this will ensure that you cannot be trapped in the prison this will protect you
and we find out later it's just some babble it's meaningless it's a junk she got it at clare's boutique
yeah she found it literally found it at the bottom of her drawer and she was like okay well this will
see if this works what they find out from the bone carver is that jurean is to be reborn
using the eye that amarantha kept in a ring on her finger so i don't think we covered this in the
first podcast, but she had a ring on her finger that had an eyeball in it. And it was this warrior
Juryan's eyeball. And she had his finger on a necklace around her neck. I mean, this chick was
sadistic. Yeah. The eyeball moved around. Yeah, the guy, because his eyeball was on her finger,
like he couldn't die. Like he was always watching. Yeah. He was always watching. A little creepy and
it's a bit of a stretch, but here we are. So they confirmed they're bringing Jurean back to life. They got the
eyeball they got the finger they're gonna they're gonna bring them back the king of highburn is collecting pieces to put
the cauldron back together and he also wants to get his hands on the book of breathings which tells you how to
control the cauldron so the king plans to use the cauldron to shatter the wall that separates the
fay from the mortal lands and that's where favor gets concerned because our family's over there right
and long ago the book was ripped in two and so one half of the book sits in the mortal lands with the
queens and the other half is with the high lord of the summer court if resand and the inner circle
get the book of the caldings they can nullify the powers of the cauldron so they need that book yeah real
bad they do need that book yeah yeah so first up is going to be the mortal lands to get to talk to the
queens and see if they can get that half of the book i think they thought it would be easier than it was
like this was probably the hardest part so favorite things hey i got a place in the mortal lands let's all
go to my house yeah yeah
will welcome you in with open arms.
We have plenty of room.
Especially Nesta.
She's sitting at the door, you know, back at the home and she's got her hood up.
And she thought that it would be at least a lukewarm reception.
But of course, you know, Elaine's crying.
Nesta's angry.
I mean, gosh, these are like good for nothing sisters.
Well, they haven't seen her as a fairy yet.
So this is the first time there.
I don't even know if they knew she was.
So they didn't.
They didn't know her story.
They didn't know that she died.
They didn't know that she was reborn as a fairy.
So, yeah, I would be, if I were a sister, I'd be like low-key jealous.
Okay, so you are beautiful now.
You've got glowing skin.
You're like, no wrinkles.
You're immortal.
They're just looking down on her, and it's just infuriating.
There's a lot of hatred towards the Fay, and it's just been baked into their brains over the years.
And, I mean, we find out that Elaine is engaged to a Fay hater big time.
They've been hunting Faye in his families for centuries.
Basically, Fyra convinces them this is why we're here.
And so they eventually decide they're going to be supportive.
And while they have some downtime, Fyra and Rysand are training her powers in the woods.
She tells him to get lost because he's getting on her nerves.
And she quickly gets attacked by the Ator.
So the Atter is the monster that tortured her under the mountain.
He was Amaranth as like basically muscle.
he beat the shit out of her.
He was just a really evil creature.
Right.
The evilest out of all of us.
Yeah.
And she has a lot of nightmares about him.
But he grabs her and Resan's there in a heartbeat.
He shows up immediately.
And Asriel's there too.
And he takes the Ator away.
And they're going to interrogate and torture him, which sounds good to me.
But then she figures out, like, Rissan basically used her as bait.
He did.
She's pissed.
Yeah.
He's like, what the hell?
without asking.
I'm a carrot that you dangled in front of a monster.
Thanks a lot.
And she justifiably is like, look, I'm leaving a court that had me prisoner only to be
in another court that's using me as bait.
Like, what is this?
Yeah, she has a good point.
He does feel bad about it, which he should.
That was not nice.
So they get a note to the Queens and it's slow going communication.
They're taking their sweet time.
So while they wait, they decide they're going to go to the summer course.
and see if they can get the other side of the book.
And so here's who we meet in the summer court.
And I really loved going to the summer court too.
I felt happier.
Yeah, like it just seems like so sunny.
And it was just like, I love the way that she was.
I know.
Like we're in winter and I just felt like I went down to the Keys in Florida.
I'm like, ah, I love this place and I want to stay.
I know.
And then the people we meet are just super cool too.
So we meet Tarquin.
who's the High Lord of the Summer Corny.
He's kind of a new High Lord.
I guess he's a real hottie.
And actually, Farah and Resand really like him immediately.
He's just a nice guy.
He's nice.
He's genuine.
He wants what's right for his people.
Like, he's a lot like Resand.
But they don't know if they can trust him to tell them why they're really there.
So they decide not to, which I think that was a missed up.
Yeah.
I agree.
And then we meet Princess.
Cressida, who Rysand does flirt with. And Fahara gets a little jealous, actually.
But he was flirting with her to make her jealous because he was jealous that she was flirting with the haughty
Tarquin. Yeah, that's Tarquin. Tarkwin and Fero were like BFFs and they were just flirting back and
forth and we're like. She's like, you would be so easy to fall in love with. And Rissan is like,
what? You kidding me? I know. I'm like, day, Fara. You just met him.
And you just left Tamlin.
Slow down.
Then we also meet Varian, who I guess is also super hot.
And he has a chemistry, I felt like, with Amaran.
Yeah.
That's kind of implied, but it doesn't really, we don't know what happens with those two.
They figure out the book they're looking for is on a remote island.
And this is after Fahara's been traped all over the summer court.
She's asked to see things she doesn't give two shit about trying to see if she can feel the energy of the book.
Oh, and he gave him.
her a gift from the vault that was
really generous yeah well and the thing is if we wanted to go
backwards a little bit so the reason why they brought Farah to
the summer court in looking for the book is because she has
powers from each of the courts she can sense the most
prized possessions better than anyone so we learn that when she
actually went to the weaver's cottage remember he reese gave her a
mission to find his ring and she found it and so that was like okay she can
sense out when there's something that we need. And so they brought her to the summer court. And like you said,
Jen, she was traipsed all over. She couldn't feel anything. And then finally, she's looking out at the
sea and sees this like crumbling building kind of out in the surf and she starts to get pulled.
When the tide is out. So that's a, that's an important little nugget. It's only when the tide is
up. Yeah. They go in the middle of the night to get the book. And her and Amran almost die. I mean,
it was a really dangerous mission and they set off alarms right away and they almost drowned in this
tomb at the bottom of this island this is where the being nice to the water wraith came in handy
she comes up and she's like you know what you save my third cousin angie back in the street
even that is paid my friend she saves her life and slithers away and now she's even but in the meantime
Tarquin doesn't appreciate.
And they slink off like thieves in the night that they are.
They take off.
He's pissed.
And he puts out a kind of, is it a blood?
A bounty.
Yeah.
Blood rubies.
And so, you know, they've made an enemy of a pretty great guy.
So that was unfortunate that they did.
And Reese is really depressed about it.
He's really sad about it.
It was too bad.
They get back.
Amarin takes a look at the half of the book they do have and realizes the language is one
that only she knows from like.
times ago and she thinks if she can get the other half of the book that she might be able to use the
magic to go home and again we don't really know what that we don't know who she is it's so fascinating
we know that she's existed before prithian was prithian it's like she's been she sounds like she was a
terrifying person or something she was terrifying in her previous life so it's really interesting to see her
has this little waif with brown short hair and silver eyes and a little dainty figure when she was
like a fucking dragon or something back in her previous.
Well, she's a little icy too.
I mean, it's not like she's a Mormon fuzzy.
I know. Yeah. She's got an edge.
Yeah.
So now we wait because we're still waiting to hear back from the queens.
And so as we wait, Faye was practicing.
She's training with Cassian.
She's learning how to use her magic powers.
Amaran's trying to decode the book.
And they finally do hear back from the queen.
So, you know, back to Bridgeton, we go.
Mm-hmm.
It's still awkward with the sisters.
They're not real thrilled about it.
The dad has been away this whole time.
He's trading in foreign lands is what they keep saying.
So then the queens, at first they refuse to let them see, even see the book.
So one of Morrigan's powers that they respect and understand, which is what she tells you is true.
And the queens know her from previous in the war.
And they know that what she says is true.
So she tells them if Hyburn breaks that wall and invades,
it ain't going to be good. Yeah. They believe her. And you guys are mortal queens that you guys got to save you. You endanger you endanger girl. And you should care about your mortal subjects a little bit. Oh and we find out here they have no plan to protect. No. No. They're like this is a small city. They can come over and bulldoze it. Yeah. The city on the right near the wall. They have no plans to protect them at all or even tell them to move. They're just kind of stuck there. So they're not warning them. They're not telling. Yeah, they're not doing anything. They're just sitting.
on their ass. They're not very nice queens.
No. They do say if recent,
if you can prove to us, you're not the monster
that you're rumored to be. Well, think
about it. This is where
Fahler learns about Miriam. If you
guys know this story better than me, please chime
in, but from what I can tell, she's a
half human, half Faye.
And she was Juryan's
lover. So Juryan's the guy with the eyeball
in the ring, right? And he was like kind of
a terrifying warrior. So Miriam
fell in love with another Faye named
Dracon. Juryan was human.
Draykin was Faye. After the war, Juryan's killed by Amarantha, because Juryan killed Amarantha's sister.
And we talked about that in the first podcast. They snuck off. So Miriam and Dracan sneak off and start
a new life where humans and Faye together live peacefully. So is there anything I'm missing that we
might need to know about Miriam because she is mentioned. It just feels sort of like a random
side plot for me. It comes back later in the third book in the Akka War.
So up to this point, everybody's saying that Miriam is dead.
And Jurian has this idea that he wants to resurrect Miriam and claim her as his own, not realizing and we'll find out later that Miriam's not actually as dead dead.
She's mostly dead, but not all.
To blame.
It's only got one foot in the grave.
Okay.
Okay, that's interesting. So we'll learn more.
We will learn more.
Sit tight.
Yeah, all right.
Sit tight.
It'll make more sense.
Because I'm like, should I miss something?
I felt the same way too.
And then you read on and you get more of it.
But right now it just seems scattered and like not cohesive to the story.
Yeah.
Okay.
So Riesin does eventually decide the only way he can prove that he's not a monster is to show the queen's his treasured city of the Lars.
And in order to do this, they need an orb, which I guess is like a crystal ball.
which contains magic, but they have to steal it from the court of nightmares, which is his own court.
So I'm not totally sure.
Yeah, why are they stealing it?
Yeah, it's like, why didn't you just sashy in there and take it and walk back and say,
peace out, guys?
Yeah, I'm just borrowing this for a hot minute.
I mean, I felt like this was super random.
So in order to distract the court while this is being stolen by Azrael,
Rysand treats Fahara like a whore.
Yeah.
He has her sitting on his lap in the throne room, and he's fondling her, and she's,
our body's responding, okay?
Oh, yeah.
She's getting, she's getting peaked.
Yeah, in fact, she gets, you know, get her, but.
Get her a washcloth.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
She's in the washcloth.
Yeah.
She stained Reese's slack, that's for sure.
And he was like, oops, sorry.
But I'm not sorry.
And then, but they steal.
the orb, which was the whole reason they were there. On their way out, Morgan's father, who she's,
there's bad blood there. Like, there's history. He's an evil man. But he insults Fara. And Rissand
basically breaks his bones with his brain, like, just, and tells him, tells him he can't go to a healer.
Right. He's like, you can't go to a healer. He's mad because he's been called Amarantha's whore for so
many years that when he heard Fara being called a whore, he just lost his shit. Yeah. Plus he's like,
madly in love with phara so don't don't do that and you know she's she's got her wetness all over slacks yeah
they just had a moment god read the room so i feel like we're 80 years old calling pants slacks
trousers what are they leathers i don't know i'llerian leathers maybe i don't know but then you'd
think the wetness would just light right off i don't know wipe that off pretty easy so they at this
point travel to an Illyrian war camp so they can get ready for the battles ahead. This is where
Fahara learns that Tamlin's family killed Rysand's mother and sister. So Tamlin left that part out.
Right. Yeah, by convenience. But yeah, he was telling her how bad Rysand was. He didn't tell her that part.
So then Rysan's father, because of that, killed Tamlin's whole family. So Fahara's starting to hear both
sides of the story and things are changing and she realizes Tamlin left a whole lot out.
So while training one day, Lucian finds her.
Lucian and some others from the spring court.
They find her and try to convince her to go home back to Tamlin.
And he's like, it's real bad.
We need you.
Like the things aren't good over there because he's so upset.
And Fahara says no.
And meanwhile, he's just taking steps forward to her and she's taking steps back.
She knows the minute that he touches her, he's going to winnow her back to the spring court.
So it was, she was getting really pissed.
Lucian, like you said, was like, things are really bad.
He's really, really sorry.
For the millionth time, he's sorry.
Just come back home.
And she said, you were my friend and you did nothing.
I mean, he got to hand it to Farah.
Like, Lucian had it coming.
He did.
But it's hard for me to hate that guy.
I know.
I love him.
Oh, yeah.
I know.
But he made a mistake.
You know, he needed to get a little comeuppance.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He deserved that.
So the next day, Rysands flying through the air, carrying Fara, and they are attacked.
takes seven poisoned ash arrows into his wings and several in his legs and they get separated and
resan gets captured and tortured by some soldiers from highburn it's pretty traumatizing and then
feyr saves him she goes in and rescues him they wrapped him in chains that stifled all of his power so he
couldn't fight back so he was he was a hot mess she gets him to safety but she doesn't know how to
heal him and so let's go capture the cereal again it was easy enough
the first time. I know. It's so funny because it's so hard to catch the cereal, but like she just
finds a way, all you need is a new robe and like being next to a stream. It's...
Or raw chicken. Yeah. So she snares the cereal, no big deal. And the surreal tells her to
heal him. You've got to let him drink your blood. But more importantly, the cereal lets it slip that
resand is her mate. And he knows, he's known for a long time that he's her mate. And she gets real mad
about that. She goes and heals him, but she gets real mad about that. So. She heals him and then dumps them and
says, I need some space. Yeah. She goes to a remote, well, it's his cabin, but she goes to a remote
habit. It's nice if you have a boyfriend that's got so many residences that he can't figure out
which one you're at, like, you know. By the way, like this cabin, okay, I love it. So it's been
okay, let's talk about this. It's been in the family for decades and probably,
millennia, whatever. She gets there and she just decides to paint, you know, and so she fucking
paints the whole thing. If that's a choice. The whole goddamn cabin and like, I mean, can you
imagine? Like, why would somebody think that they could just paint my house all up with creepy
eyes? When I read the scene, I envisioned finger painting from kindergarten. Like, it didn't make any
sense. And it was just like, it gave me actually some heart palpitation thinking about all these like stupid
paintings all over the cabin. She just defaced a beautiful property. Didn't she paint eyeballs? It was like
an eyeball. She painted all of their eyes. But like that's not. You don't want that on the wall,
Fara. I'm sure it is very comforting at nights too. Yeah. And so and Morgan even comes in,
visits her and walks in and like, okay, well, this is a choice, I guess. We'll get to a
decorator in here. But Riesand finds her. And you guys, chapter 55. This part gave me a lot of feels.
I cried ugly tears. This is where they fall in love. And it just melted my heart. So this is a little
bit lengthy. But I do think it's important. Now, this book is like 900 pages. So I didn't read it
twice. But this chapter I read twice because he tells her so much. He tells her everything. And it's so,
so important. He is just so raw. And here's where we see a lot of the things he went through and
some of his torment that he's still processing and working through. So she's still a little mad at him.
But she says, just tell me everything. And he says, okay. So he said, under the mountain was not the
first time Amarantha captured him. She captured him when he was a young warrior. And he hated her
then. He wanted to kill her back then. She killed his soldiers. She tormented him. But she was really
more focused on Juryan at the time.
Because of that, his dad was able to
rescue him. His dad's kind of
an asshole, too. He talks about
when he saw her again, she didn't recognize
him. And he had all
this trauma and hatred towards her
this whole time. When she
poisoned them and took
their magic, the last, like you mentioned, Jen,
the last thing he did was put a shield
over Valeris. She murdered half
his court, just because she could. Just to
show him that, you know, she was the boss.
She'd been looking at him like he was
piece of meat. I mean, he's an incredibly beautiful man and she wanted him. And he knew if he
slept with her and she enjoyed it, that he could have the upper hand. And it was disgusting. And he
felt gross about it every time it happened. It just made him sick. But he did it to protect his people.
And he's still processing that part of it. That again, the things that happen there are such a big
character in the book and a big part of the book. And so three years ago,
he started having dreams about Fahua.
He did.
And she started having dreams about like the night sky and the stars.
And so when he realized she was in Prithian, he just felt her presence.
He went to the spring court because he could tell that's where she was.
And that's when he ran into her,
hell and mine saved her from those guys.
Right.
But he didn't know that she was with Tamlin.
And so that day that he barged into Tamlin's castle,
he was really just there to just fuck with him a little bit and didn't realize she was there,
but he smelled her scent, and then he realized the glamour, and then he found her, and he just
wanted to know her name.
And that's why he asked.
And when she said her name was Claire Betters, he knew she was lying, but he thought she
was just making it up.
He didn't know that was a real person.
And so when they capture the actual Claire Betters and torture her, he
protected Claire in the best way he could. He used his mind power so she didn't actually feel
the pain. He shielded her pain and he instructed her to scream when she should scream even though
she wasn't in pain. So that felt a little better to me because she really, Claire really got
fucked over. Well, poor Claire. Yeah. I'm kidding. But you know, he could have mentioned, because this is
tormented favor for a long time too. For a long time. Why didn't you tell me that before? He thought
Amarantha killed the girl that she thinks Tamlin loved.
We're all out of the woods.
And then Fayette shows up under the mountain and he's like, oh, shit.
And so that's when he decides, I'm going to fight with her.
I'm going to help her win this fight.
And we all know all the things he did for her under the mountain.
A lot more things than Tamlin did for her.
Yeah, I'll say.
And he does mention that Tamlin was a shithead for making out with her and putting her at risk that night.
and that he had to clean it up.
It's like all of these things are snapping into place that we thought he was just such a monster,
but then you're like, oh my gosh, that's right.
He's a great guy and he loves her.
And he loves her this whole time.
So then the last thing that he said, and I didn't realize this,
but he is the reason all the high lords gave her their power to make her come back alive.
He used his mind powers to get in their heads and convinced them to do it.
remember the last podcast that we did, I was like, I could not believe that the autumn court was a first to give her his powers because he's such a dig.
Yeah. And so now it makes sense because he never would have done it. Yeah, Reese is a Damani. So he got into all of their heads and been like, all right, everybody got apart with some of magical powers. Bring this girl back to life. Let's go. And they were so discombobulated by everything that had just happened anyway that they just kind of went with it. And,
But I mean, it is really amazing to hear him retell it.
And then after Under the Mountain ends and everybody goes home, he for three months just said, if she's happy, that's all that matters to me.
And if she's in love of Tamlin and he makes her happy, I'm going to stay out of their way until the day of the wedding.
What a gentleman.
But meanwhile, this whole time, he hears her screaming and he feels her nightmares.
He hears her throwing up every night.
and he still is like, I can't interfere yet until she pleads for help on the wedding day.
And you guys, he tells her he couldn't stop being around her, loving her, and wanting her,
and he still can't stay away.
And then Farah.
Are you crying for real?
Maybe.
And then Farah feeds him, which is a really big deal.
Well, she heated up some canned soup, you know.
But the important part of that is once the maid.
bond is discovered like that's kind of seals the deal the first meal that she serves him seals the mating
bond and he told her that before she served him and she served him anyway and then they had sex on
paint they got yeah on the table got paint everywhere all in the nethers all over the walls would you
like there's a big old ass prints on my wall now well I mean it's not much different because
there's paint everywhere anyway she totally tore up yeah
It's like graffiti anyways.
But this is chapter 55.
So again, a bit of a slow burn, Sarah.
Yeah.
But we had a way for it, for sure.
But the spice was definitely spicier in this, the second book and written really well and very romantic.
And apparently his orgasm shooketh the mountainous.
It was spicy.
Avalanche is happening right in like.
Oh, and this is where we find out if she strokes his wing.
Yeah, it's kind of like the jean pot.
And he's never let anybody do that until this time.
Yeah, so she's like washing paint off of his wings and he's like,
ooh.
They have a really wonderful union, but sexy time can't last forever because they still
got work to do.
They finally hear back from the mortal queens and they meet again at Farras family home
in the mortal lands and the queen's winnow in, which I thought was in.
interesting because they're mortal.
So they said this was a gift that they were given.
I don't know.
I thought that was really interesting.
Yeah, they didn't ever share how they got that gift, but it was very interesting to see
mortals win.
Yeah, yeah, I thought that was interesting.
How many queens are there?
It's like five or six of them?
There's six queens and five showed up to the first meeting and then only two showed up to
this one.
Three.
It was three showed up.
Five showed up to the first one with the sixth being quote unquote ill.
and we'll find out later what that means,
but only three showed up because the other two were offended by Nesta
and her bitchy attitude.
Oh, her bad manners.
Yeah.
But they, so they say, nope, thanks for showing us the orb,
but we're not interested in giving you the book.
We're out of here.
But one queen sort of drops it on the floor,
and she's kind of like, I'm for peace and I want,
I want you guys to fix this.
Because Reese wrote her a letter telling her of his love for Fahra and his love for the people.
And so that was the golden queen with the golden hair and the most beautiful out of all of them.
So his letter just really saying to her.
And so when, you know, she was playing along.
But when she got up from her chair, they realized that she had the other half of the book hidden under the chair.
So they get what they came for, which is great.
They go back home. Amarin does decode the book, figures out the spell that's needed to disable the caldra.
Right. But before they can do any of that, an army swoops in from Highburn and attacks Filar.
So the queens told Highburn everything about the secret city and now it's under attack, which is just heartbreaking.
Yeah, they sold them out. Yeah. They sold them out and that poor Golden Queen got dropped and
impaled on a lampp. She got murdered for her for helping them. Yep. It was really heartbreaking,
but Farah's magic is really amping up. Like she, she creates these wolves out of water that,
like, attack. I mean, it was, it was really neat. They do get the city secured again, and then they put.
Yep, and she called the adder. Oh, yeah. She got an adder fantastically.
Yeah, she, she winnowed around and she, the adder was flying. And so,
she winnowed onto his back and then turned herself into fire and burned him and then hit him in the heart three
times with an ash arrow one for her one for the mortals that he killed and one for resand oh yeah so he died
thank goodness dang dog yeah um it's time to to go to highburn and nullify the the cauldron like
this is what their mission has been this whole time and basically phaera just needs to speak a spell
to the cauldron but they get there and she chokes like she can't yeah say the words it's it's not as
easy as it sounds apparently and things go wrong and they get captured by none other than jury him
he's there damn you re you resurrected yeah he resurrected pretty nice though yeah i think they
she said he was kind of hot yeah yeah all the fan art has him kind of hot yeah yeah i've seen i've seen
kind of a mean hot but whatever i'm into it we're just
looking.
Sorry.
So they get bound and the king comes in and sort of fermenting them.
And it turns out Tamlin sold them down the river.
Damn it, Tamlin.
Oh.
Tamlin walks in.
And Ianthi, Ianthi did too.
Oh, yeah.
She really did.
Like the bitch she is.
So Tamlin comes in and he's like, I want my woman back, basically.
He and Lucian are there as well as the mortal queens.
So Farah's sister.
have been captured and the king of highburn has told the queens like here's the here's his part of the
bargain all make you immortal and forever beautiful and they're like we want to try before we buy right
so they yeah they bring in the sisters we need to test drive that caldring thanks yeah exactly
animal testing yeah it's really terrible like it's just so sad like they they basically dip the sisters
into the cauldron. I'm just having a hard time picturing with this god.
I'm thinking of like a giant pot. It's kind of like I picture it as like a big giant,
like a witch's cauldron, but like almost like a hot tub size, you know, and like it's kind of
inky, black liquid in the inside. That's how I'm like like a scary, a scary hot tub.
Yeah, a scary hot tub.
Yeah. So they both to take a dip against their well, basically. And are.
are turned into Faye.
Hi, Faye. And it's, they're not real happy about it. Oh, Nesta is big mad. Before she goes under,
she, she has this iconic moment where she's pointing this death point at Highburn. And even
Hyburn is like, oh, shit. Yeah. Yeah. She's kind of scary. Yeah. But we find out Aanthi's the one that
told the king about the sisters and this is how you're going to get and leg up over Fahra.
Because she, this is one of her weaknesses. So, I mean, what a be.
atch you know her end game is she wants to get rid of the high lords and she wants the priestesses to rule
the lands but she's she's really not going about it the right way so because tamlin's a narcissistic
idiot he really thinks he's saving favor he doesn't he doesn't think she but she's like he thinks
she wants to be with him and that he's there to do her a favor even though she's written him
notes she has refused it's like how many times does he's like how many times does he's
girl have to say no before you stop harassing her.
And she's coming in with a savior, savior complex.
I said no.
We've broken up like a million years ago.
He feels the mating bond between Reese and Fahara.
And he thinks that it's mind tricks by Reese.
And like he cannot accept that bitch has moved on.
Yeah.
So while all this is going on,
Fyra is using her mind magic to open a portal.
so her friends can leave.
And oh, another thing that happens, and this is awful.
Cassian's wings get shredded, which to a Valerian is like the worst thing that's,
like cutting off their penis.
Like, it's the worst thing you can do.
It's the worst.
And Asriel got an arrow to the heart as well.
Oh, he's dying this whole time.
So, I mean, Faye was under the gun to get them out of there.
So she resorts to desperate measures.
She opens the portal.
She tells them to leave.
And then she looks at Tamlin and says, or she tells the king, I've been under his spell.
Please break the bond.
And she knows, she looks at Tamlin.
She's like, you're right.
I want to come back to you.
So the king breaks the bond from where we're sitting in the story at this moment.
We see the bond break along with my heart.
Oh, I know.
I was devastated.
They feel the pain of it.
Like how much vomit was in her throat saying, I was wrong, Tamlin.
I'll come back to you and gross.
Like that must have really killed her to have to say that.
It was really, I'm just reading it going, but Sarah doesn't make us suffer too long.
Like we very quickly realized that she and Resand are in on this together.
And the night before, he basically married her and anointed her.
It's like super secret ceremony.
I just picture like that movie Braveheart, like just with a little like small, just the two of them.
I just picture them just secretly walking away and getting married and it's just so romantic.
And he made her the high lady.
High lady.
He made, and that's never been a thing.
Yeah.
There's only been high Lord.
So now they're equals in every sense of the word.
And the intention is for her to go into the spring court as a spy and find out everything they know.
And this is where the book ends.
Like Farah's leaving with Tamlin.
The sisters go with Rissand.
Oh, wait.
Wait, wait, wait, wait, way, way.
This one last thing.
So, all right, go for it.
Elaine comes out of the cauldron and she's let, she's splayed out on the ground.
And Lucian says, somebody cover her up and he goes over and puts a blanket over her.
And then he goes, she's my mate.
And she's like, what?
She's like, ew, I'm engaged.
You know, like, what are you talking about?
So that's his mate.
And they don't know what that means.
Like, they don't understand that.
But Riesand takes.
the sisters with him to safety and then takes everybody back to Valeris.
And we realize that the bond that was broken was the bargain that they made in the first
book, the mating bond that they had is still alive and well.
Yes.
Yes.
So they are still mated and bonded.
Thank God.
I wouldn't have been able.
They're still sending a little cute little messages telepathically.
Oh, my God.
Can we talk about their messages back and forth?
I was going to say it was like, it was like moderate.
day texting, but it was so cute. It's like magical texting. I'm like, what? So, and then he left her on red that one time. And I was like, oh, shit, man, that must have sucked.
Send back a letter with no pen so she could write.
So it would, the what that was was a piece of paper would appear in front of her with his message on it. And then she'd write it back and it would disappear and go to him. And then it would appear. It was really great. But yeah. It was very cute. He did leave her on.
Yeah, he did.
He did.
For a hot minute.
But Rysand goes back to Valarice and now they prepare for war.
And that is where we leave off.
Yes.
Lots of cliff hangers.
Lots of cliff hangers.
Oh, so the next book is Wings and Ruin, which is a quarter of wings and ruin, which is really Ackawar.
Okay, Akalor.
Because it's the war.
It's the war.
So, yes.
And I am, I did dip into this one a little bit because we've got a tight schedule.
But I'm only about a third of the way through, about 30, 4.
percent of the way through. Did you finish it yet, Jen? No, I'm about three-quarters of the way.
But Mist and Fury, what would you guys have rate this book in a five-star scale? What would you say
this rating was for you? So Amy here, I honestly, this was one of my favorite books that I've read
in a long time. And certainly probably my favorite book in the whole series. So I've got to get a
solid five. I would say it's a slow burn, but the spice does, you do get the payoff. I would say maybe
2.5 spice, maybe three. I don't know, you know, there's a lot of wetness happening.
Jenny here, and I agree like this, the second book was so satisfying. We just find out so much.
It's just so beautifully written with all the places that they go. So I would give it a solid five.
And as far as spiciness, like Amy said, it was a slow burn. We did have to wait till chapter 55.
But there was a lot of lead up as, you know, and flirty,
magical text messages. So I kept you interested. So I would say a good. I'm totally aligned a five star
read for sure. Sarah Maz knows how to write. I mean, the scenery, the landscape. How do you come up with that?
The character development. I mean, it was incredible. One of the best books I've read. So five stars all the way,
six stars, however many I can give it. And then I, yeah, I'm going to go to 2.5 on the spice. I mean,
But for this book, it was totally appropriate.
It worked.
Yeah.
I mean, if he had started doing BDSM, it would have cheapened the book.
Like, I mean, that's not what this book's about.
I know, but I would have been on board with that.
I mean, it's not stuff for Thanksgiving.
If there was a gang bang in chapter three, it would have cheapened it a little.
So it was appropriately spicy.
So, no car vacuums, this one.
Yeah.
No, no, thank you.
So this was wonderful.
I'm so excited to do the next one.
Can't wait.
