Don't shuffle papers.
Kill you.
Or type.
Typing, yes.
You're a loud typeer and you know it.
It's an intentional keyboard that allows me to make clacky noises because I like them.
You know why?
We'll get into that therapy session later.
It's so.
Why do you need that in your life?
I type really fast.
And when I'm in a groove, it's like, it's great.
Do you have the clicky noises on your phone too?
Yes.
I love it.
I always wonder why that existed, and now we know because of Kim.
Book love literature fans.
We're in for some boozy bookgasms today.
Join three cousins creating a titillating headspace
where steamy romance novels collide with strong cocktails.
So sit back, sip slow, and enjoy the ride.
Welcome back, literature fans.
I'm Jen. I'm Lynn. I'm Ken. Today we are talking about Chasing Wilde by Elliot Rose, but before we jump on this mechanical bull ride, what are we drinking tonight?
So I wanted something that would represent that cowboy life and still embrace the sweetness of the love story. So the drink for tonight is called the Complex Cowboy in honor of our main male character, Colton Wilder.
That's so perfect. This is perfect. Yeah. So it's got notes of citrus.
vanilla, some yummy chocolate, and a bit of a kick in the ass.
And not unlike our cowboy, it's a guilty pleasure.
Drink it at night.
Should be enjoyed slowly.
And make sure you take in every single drop.
So we've got some chocolate whiskey, some bourbon, orange bitters, chocolate bitters.
And then we're going to do some chocolate orange slices.
So it's kind of a sweet chocolate.
It's kind of a twist on an old fat.
But so tasty. Nice and warm. I love a good chocolate orange places are like my favorite.
Citrusy. Good stuff. Just like Colt. Thank you. Yeah. He's good stuff. So first I'd like to start by addressing the readers who like to wear the hat and get railed in the back seat until you forget your own name.
Just so you know, Daddy Colt has a spot and instruct us for you. This is easily the best book dedication on.
I've ever read in my entire life.
So good.
So good.
And it took just like a few chapters to really get it.
But oh, it was perfect though.
As soon as that first backseat thing happened, I'm like, yes.
Get it now.
Yes.
100%.
So our female main character is Layla.
And she is 25 years old and is an aspiring veterinarian currently finishing her last
semester in school.
Girlfriend is broke.
She is a college student.
She's barely making ends meet.
and also has the added pressure paying for a care facility for an aunt with dementia.
And she's drifted into the town of Crimson Ridge, Montana, which will grow to know and love.
I certainly did on fumes to return her ex-boyfriend Casey's thing.
So Casey was a party boy and a pretty crappy boyfriend.
There's no love loss, but yeah, he's a fuck boy.
But the stuff he left behind was sentimental and she's kind of a softie and she feels bad about throwing it out.
She really, really doesn't like him, but she's like, no.
But she does feel kind of bad, right?
As evidenced by the fact that she drove, like, hours out of her way to return this stuff to this small town.
But like she even says it, it was over before it began.
And then she felt bad for him.
So she just let him crash there with her as nothing.
She was sleeping with her, though.
They were still sleeping together.
And it wasn't great sex even.
It was like a friends with benefits thing.
Yeah.
She did feel bad for him.
him because he's sort of like he's that guy that you just feel like you have to take care of.
You know he's a dipshit.
And he finds women who will.
Yes.
He is and he's like an aspiring rodeo person.
She stops at a gas station to fill up and when she goes to pay her car is declined.
So she's mortified.
And she doesn't have any other way to pay.
And the gas station guy is being like a total dick about it.
Like he's threatening to siphon the gas out of her car and he's making a huge scene about
it.
She gets rescued by this really hot cowboy in his early 40s who's standing behind her in line and he pays for her gas. And he's got this curly brown hair, which I is still a dream about at night. And he wears a black cowboy hat. And she says he's got big dick energy radiating off him. They flirt and he asks her out, but she says she can't. And then he takes it as a rejection and just kind of drives off. And she wishes she handled it different.
She's on her way to a job hours away from that time.
So she's like, I can't go out with you.
But then she's like, why didn't I say something different?
Because he was odd and I liked him.
She hasn't been able to reach Casey, the ex-boyfriend.
And she had an address for him.
She stops in a cafe or a bar.
And she's like, there's no way in fucking hell this is a real address.
Because it's like in the middle of nothing.
And she asks this really shitty waitress, bartender.
Slutty girl. And the girl, like, warns her not to go up there. Well, she's like, aren't you too young for him?
Yeah. He's too old for you. If the beasts don't get you or something. I mean, she makes these real weird comments. Like cryptic comment.
Essentially, yes, the pin is real. And she gets her ass back in the car and drives to nowhere land up the mouth.
Yeah. It's kind of a treacherous drive. But when you get there, you realize why. I mean, it's,
this gorgeous overlook. The scenery in this book, the writer did an amazing job. You just wanted to be
there. And it's at this beautiful ranch home overlooking the mountain. It's called Devil's Peak.
And she knocks on the door and guess who lives there?
By cowboy. It's the cowboy from the guest station. He's only wearing a towel and he looks good and
only a towel. But he's galling and he's annoyed and he's not very welcoming.
Casey, the ex-boyfriend, runs out and he's so happy to see her and he's drunk. He's always drunk. And he picks her up and swings her around and she's just like off kilter because she's like, what the hell? I haven't talked to you in forever. And now you're acting like you're super happy to see me. Then we find out like hot gas station guy is Casey's dad. Casey just wants to hang out and wants her to stay. And she's like, get your shit out of my car. She's done. She's like, get your shit out of my car. I'm out of here. And she leaves.
thinking, I am never going to see these guys again, but she often thinks about that cowboy.
And he often thinks about her. So, you know. And then a few months later, Layla had finished her
schooling and she's secured an internship. And this is the last thing to finish up her degree. So she's
really close to graduation. And she just needs this eight-week internship. And she's on cloud nine
until she gets a call from a debt collector and finds out that Casey took out a loan from
$2,000 in her name and never paid a dime on it. So she's on the hook for this money. And she's stressed.
Like she doesn't have a penny to her name until she starts this internship. So she's really angry.
And since Crimson Ridge is on her way to where her internship is, she's like, I'm going to go up there and I'm
going to demand my money back. Now it's wintertime. So it's a very treacherous road up to the house because
it's snowing. And she's got a pretty crappy car. But she is fueled by a strong desire to
punch Casey in the face and cast rate as she should be. As she should. Ridiculous. And the debt collector is like not giving her any reprieve. He's like, you owe us $2,500 with interest and you've already passed. And it's due on Tuesday. I mean, you have no time to. Yeah, because he's already wasted that time, that leniency. They've already given it and given it and given it. So now they're like, no, you're going to collections and that's it. You guys. Like this is the first time she.
gets a phone call about this and like there's no leave.
I thought that was a little old.
That's a story gap for me is that all the sudden she's getting the phone call.
Now she's getting the call.
So she gets up to the ranch again and she gets out and it's looking pretty empty.
And then she hears Colt ask if she's lost or something.
And she turns around and he is covered in blood with a deer carcass around.
This is such a visual.
Yeah.
Totally.
It was upsetting to her.
Like she's, you know, she's used to animals.
and stuff, but it smelled like blood.
He just gutted the deer.
Like, he's manly.
He's a manly, but I felt like she was like, oh, what's going on?
So she asks if Casey's there and Colt asks, why did he knock you up?
Which is a shitty thing to say to somebody, and it really pisses her off.
And Colt says he's not there.
He's in town at the bars.
And so she's like, fuck you.
And she gets in her car to leave because he's still not being very nice to her.
She blew him off.
Or he thinks she moved off.
Yeah.
And now you're the girlfriend of my son and I have the hots for you.
I don't have a shot.
But her shitty car dies halfway down the mountain.
And the next thing we know, she's crying in Colt's kitchen.
He's still under the impression.
This is his son's girlfriend.
He's still thinking she's pregnant.
And she's chasing him because she's come back again to like find him.
He explains, listen, we cannot call a tow truck because there's a storm coming.
and I can't take you into town because I'm going to get stuck at the bottom of this mountain
and I've got a ranch to take care of. So we're stuck here, honey.
She is supposed to be at work the next morning and she has a full on.
Panic attack. Panic attack. And he knew how to handle it. You know, calms her down and he's like,
what is wrong? And so she explains about she's supposed to start the job. She's not pregnant.
She's not with Casey. She realizes this father-son dynamic is not.
in a great place. And we'll find out later that he was kind of an absence he doubt. He was a teenage father.
The woman got pregnant when he's 17, I think. And he really wasn't there for him. So now he's trying to be
there for Casey. But Casey's kind of a fuck-up and he's having trouble developing this relationship.
She doesn't want to make it worse. And she just basically says, look, we used to share an account.
And I need him to approve moving some money over because I've got to pay for some things. He knows she's
full of shit.
And he's like, how much does he owe you? And she's like, look, you don't have to fix this for him. And he's like, how much? She tells him it's over $2,000. And he said, will a wire transfer do the trick? I'm now in love. I know, right? Like, he didn't even flinch. He was just like, no problem. It's fine. Here you go. Mizelia. Yeah. And the next thing we know, he's offering her a job at the ranch because she needs an internship and she's not going to make it to the one she's supposed to start in the morning. And this way she can get the hours she needs to graduate. She tells them.
Listen, it's not just about the internship. I also bartend because I need additional money to take care of my aunt. And he's like, no, no, no. I'm going to pay you.
I'll pay you. You get room and board. Everything's falling into place.
All your hours. I am your fairy godmother. Eight weeks. Eight weeks. And so begins this incredibly delicious game of restraint and yearning and ached. Lots of words.
So good.
Written so well because Casey's staying in town and he's drinking.
He's just screwing off.
He's screwing off.
But Cole, he feels guilty.
He's drawn to this girl that his son, he calls and he's like, what Layla's there?
What, you're trying to hit on my girlfriend and makes his dad feel guilty.
He doesn't want to damage the relationship any further with Casey, but there's this pull towards her.
And it is angsty.
They don't really have cell phone service.
They're using a raise.
A radio.
A walkie-talkie-type radio.
And it's in his truck.
It's just so funny to me that he's having this whole conversation with his estranged son over the walkie-talkie.
Anybody could listen.
And he's like, are you fucking my girl, dad?
What are you doing?
She's my girlfriend.
Colton is just like in this zone of she's hot.
She's here.
You're not.
I'm attracted to her.
And I can't touch her.
I don't want to fuck up my relationship with you.
And she's telling me all aren't together.
Yeah.
And she's not.
interested in the sons. It is tricky, but she also respects why he doesn't want to do anything. They
both know they shouldn't. And they try. They both want it so bad. And it is palpable. You're just like,
oh, the sexual tension is so bad. But that's what makes this book so good. Like, I mean, it takes
a while to get to the sex. Man, the angstiness was like perfect. Especially when they start in the
lounge area and he's got his beer and he's brooding and the fireplace is going and you could just,
She sits on his lap. They're into it. And then he's like, you got to leave. You got to leave me. And you just, you just like feel her.
So good. Blink away. And she's so understanding. Like you can visualize. Like you said, the writing was so good on these scenes that you felt like, oh, she could go back to that alone.
Oh. Yeah. It was good. It was so good. Because often that's frustrating. And this wasn't. This was just good.
Some other plots building in the background that I just wanted to make sure we covered is that the ranch and the animals are being messed with by two brothers that are technically Colt's uncles.
Colt was raised by his abusive grandfather and we find out that he was actually abused pretty horrifically by this awful man.
And the grandfather was also a rapist and a pedophile and ended up abusing a young woman and impregnated her twice.
So he's got two sons by a very young girl, but he never claimed him.
The grandfather ends up dying by suicide and leaves no will, but Colt ends up inheriting.
Because he's the natural next of Ken.
He's the next to Ken on paper.
But the two sons, they're called the Pearson brothers, and they feel like they're owed this ranch.
We find out Colt has offered them shares and partnerships, and he's tried to negotiate with them and try to compromise with them.
They turn everything down.
They're like, it's all or nothing.
Like, he owes us.
And if you don't give us everything, we'll take you to court.
whatever. But meanwhile, they're coming in and damaging the property and like hurting his animals and it's pretty awful.
There's undercurrent of them taking advantage of women.
They're rapist, roofying. They can't prove it, but like they know it's, yeah, like basically take it.
I think the worst was the bear trap. Oh, yeah. For me. That was weird. Because that could, I mean, anybody could have walked up there.
They're trying to cause havoc. So at one point in the story, she's going to get firewood. And she,
almost gets snapped by a bear trap. I mean, she misses it by a hair, which would have... Oh, she would have
lost her leg. It would have amputated her leg. Yes, it was so scary. Like you guys said,
these guys are also rapists and they're horrible people, but Colt won't turn them in because he's
got a lot of guilt about what his grandfather put their mother through and potentially them, too.
They don't go into too much detail, which I was okay with. He hosts a bonfire one night. These guys
show up there. The first brother shows up at the barn.
And kind of hits on her. He smells like cigarettes. He's like all up in her business. He's like really uncomfortable propositioning her. And she's kind of like, get away from me. And Colt comes to her rescue. And it's like, get the fuck out of here. Move on. And so it's uncomfortable.
Yeah. And he feels a protectiveness over her too because they have this sort of palpable energy. Right. She's helping him on the ranch. That's the point of her internship. So she's helping with the horses. She's helping do.
anything with the cows because she's trying to be a veterinarian and at one point she's out in the pasture
and the cows are like bleeding like they're hurt so she like races back to get cold to help he's
freaking out that she's bleeding she's like no it's not me it's your cows and so they rush back out
to the pasture and she has curtained off the three cows that are bleeding away from the rest of the
herd which was really smart of her he holds them down and she as a veterinarian has to fix them and
stitch them up and she's doing it in the dark. And she's never done it on alone before.
Yeah. She's never done it like that before. So she's panicking. This is the first thing he calls her
baby. He's like, baby, you've got to do it. Like I trust you baby. That calms her down. So she does it.
She gets through it because he calms her down. Yeah. He was like a rock. He starts really seeing her as
significant other like he starts giving her these pet names. And that's kind of the start of them
tiptoeing into this relationship that they did. No, they shouldn't do. And they have a
couple moments. They'll kiss and then it's like they get scared. The phone rings and it's Casey.
But anyway, then he hosts this bonfire and everybody's hearing that she's up there at the ranch.
So there's word getting around and it's making them nervous because the Pearson brothers are, they have a reputation.
But it's not just the Pearson brothers. It's like all of these cowboys in this little town and she's like fresh meat.
She's literally, she's hot, she's young, she's a red head.
She's a, she's a, she's got all the things. And they're like, oh, look, fresh me. We can all get in on this. And they're all like, ooh, look at me. I'm so hollering with her. They are. But like the Pearson brothers. She's not. She's not flirting back. No. They were creepy. She wants Colts attention. Oh, yeah. Yeah. She's in him. So but that got this bonfire. She's getting flirted with and she's letting it happen because they've been playing cat and mouse and she's wound up. Yeah. She's teasing him a little bit by flirting with the cowboy. But then she just decides she's going.
back in the house and she gets cornered by one of the Pearson brothers.
In between two trucks in the dark.
So she's scared.
In between two trucks.
And you hear this shotgun, ch-ch-ch-ch-ch.
And he tells him to get the fuck away from her.
And it was kick-ass.
So he protects her.
So he saves her in that moment and she runs inside.
And then he stays up the entire night with that shotgun on his lap.
Keeping watch that these douchebags don't come back and try to do something shady.
She wakes up in the middle of the night and sees him.
In the window, Broody with a shotgun.
And she's like, what are you doing?
Well, and then he tells her, like, these guys are dangerous.
I want you to understand how dangerous they are.
And that becomes important later.
We're about 50% of the way through the book at this point.
Okay.
So I was at 49% going, oh, the angst is killing me.
But then we have 50%.
And, yeah.
Oh, speed it, baby.
There's a huge storm that comes through.
That means the mountain road is going to be closed for two weeks at least.
And so they're not going to have to worry about Casey showing up in the middle of the night.
That is exactly right.
Nobody has to know.
We can do it.
They decide, look, I can't take it anymore.
It's two weeks.
Let's give in to our desires.
And for two weeks and two weeks only, and then we'll never speak of it again.
And Colton tells Lela.
Yeah.
He says, I expect you in my bed every night.
Mm-hmm.
And she's like, no problem, oh.
You know, that's right.
I'll be there, sir.
Yes, sir.
So not only...
Yes, Daddy.
Daddy.
She calls him Dad.
And he called her Angel.
Baby.
And like...
She doesn't call him Daddy all the time, but like just peppers throughout that really gets him
off.
It's not cringy.
It's like, she maybe says it three times, but every time.
Just a true.
to rile him at the last minute. She's like, okay, Daddy. And he's like, oh, I'm in. Yeah. That's like the last thing. But I mean, not only is the spice just written. I mean, in this book is incredible. But the scenery and the landscape, you feel like you're on this ranch and you're seeing these mountains and you're falling in love with these horses. And then, of course, Colt is an amazing lover. And of course, you know, he's huge. And Layla says she's never been with a man.
this blessed in the dick department before.
She also calls him a cowboy sex god.
Also, she just happened to get her testing done right before she got there.
The classic, I've never come this way.
I've never been like this.
I told you.
Okay, so he's got a filthy mouth too.
Oh, love it.
So on day two of their sex rump, of their two-sex rump,
Colt realizes he's going to run out of condoms,
and they can't get him.
down to town for supplies. He did not plan well and not.
Fed supplier. No. Like, he's really upset. She's having all these insecurities. Like, why is he
having regrets? Like, all this stuff. And then he basically is like, I'm out of supplies.
They have the talk. They have the talk. And he's like, we need to talk. And she's like,
what? What? What's going on? He's like, really, we can only have sex like three more times in the two
weeks that you're here. So then she tells him. Look, it's fine. I'm on barth control. I got
I haven't been with anyone since I was tested.
I will let you go bare with me.
And it's of course, like I've never done this before.
He's never.
Except for that time the condom broke when he was a teenager.
Yeah, but never since then.
But she was on birth control too.
So he's got some trust issues there because he didn't really love that girl.
She was on birth control.
It was a one night stand.
Yeah, it was a one night stand.
She talked him into it, I'm sure.
and the one time he does it with the condom on, it breaks,
and then he has this fuck-up son at 17.
So he's got some massive trust issues when it comes to.
Yeah, I'm on birth control.
But he can't.
It's like, all right, they decide they're going to just go without the condoms.
And we've soon discovered they both have a breeding kink.
Now, this was new to me.
I have never, now you two are a little more experienced in these types.
the books.
Thank you.
Have you ever, like, heard of a breeding kink where, like, I just can't wait to get as much
calm as possible, like, in my body?
No, I was going to, I was actually going to have.
And then you re-shove it back up in there?
That was so strange to me because that is actually on my list to go, guys, ew.
And have you ever heard of this before?
So I learned a lot in this book.
There are two things I have questions on.
This is my first one.
Go ahead, Lynn.
I had never heard of it as a breeding kink, but I have read books where there is a sort of a fetish of like wanting it to all stay in there?
Or see it see it seeping out.
Like, yeah.
What's funny to me is it's called a breeding kink and neither of them want children.
No, children.
Yeah, that's why I never heard of it is called that.
Yeah.
So I thought that was so interesting.
But yeah, no, never heard of breeding.
Breeding.
No, it was, that was new to me.
Different, different.
New.
It wasn't like, I mean.
this book was so fucking hot.
But I, but that, that was like, oh, okay, well, I'm moving on.
I'm enjoying this anyway.
Yeah, no, I skim's right past it.
But for like a hot second, I'm like, why did you go to a family?
Wait, wait, what did she?
I guess.
I guess that's why it's a breeding king because, like, you want.
You want it to take.
You want it to take.
And he never knew he had that until he did this first time.
Until he wanted to do it in her.
Yeah.
So to the surprise of nobody, they start catching feelings.
feelings for each other.
Well, they do it in all sorts of places, including the back of the truck in the field.
Yes.
Well, also, the other one that I had never heard of, I mean, anytime I've ever heard
coloring, it's always been like you put a collar on someone, you know, that kind of
thing.
But he was using his hand to collar her.
He was not choking her.
He was not pressing down.
It was like a, I'm here kind of controlling thing.
And I thought that was so interesting because I've never heard it put that way.
And I get it because like later when they're walking around and they're in a bar and they're in the other places, he puts his hand there and you're almost like, oh, claimed.
And then you move on.
And it was so hot to me that he did it that way.
Oh, he did.
Everything he did was odd.
Everything right.
I stopped counting.
There's no one thing I didn't like.
How many times he said she was perfect.
I mean, he just.
You love it.
that. I do love that. And it was Insta love. He insta wanted her and protected her, which you also love. The two weeks are almost
up and there's like a big rock slide. It basically gives them an extra week and they're both just like feeling guilty about it, but so glad that they're getting this extra time together. And he takes her to a special place. And it's this little A-frame cabin that he built with his own two hands because he's so fucking hot. And it's on an overlook with Pan Amherst. And it's on an overlook with Pan
And it's even more beautiful than Devil's Peak. And you're seeing the pine trees and the
hot springs. Yeah. There's hot springs rolling through it. And really it's just scenery for more sex,
which I was there for 100%. Everybody's down. Yeah. But the cute part of this is that he gives her his
cowboy hat, his black cowboy hat. And this is like his signature hat as an early birthday gift. And he wants
her to take it with her when she leaves. And it was like, because like that means, like,
like for a cowboy, they don't let their hat, they don't put their hat on anyone. Like,
this is theirs. And it is almost like a marriage proposal. It's a brand. If you're going to put your hat on a woman,
that is your woman. And he gives her this and hopes she understands like the significance of that.
Yeah. Because he had put it on her before. And then obviously like had taken it back like because it was hot.
But like now he's given it to her. Yeah. They were running errands in town before the big two week snowfall thing. And even before they had kind of.
Well, he was worried she was going into the store and people would be gawking at her.
And 70s like, oh, wait a minute.
When they're in town, they're going to split up so that they can both get as much as they can.
He puts his hat on her so that no one will bother her and that she's kind of claimed.
Then he takes it back while they're back at the ranch and then he gives it to her as like an early birthday gift.
She was like, I can't.
And it was a really big deal.
And she knew it.
And then I think they had sex with just her wearing the hat.
like a few times.
Yeah.
Well, they definitely did it in the hot springs.
Oh, yeah, that's right.
And then in the truck.
In the cabin.
In the cabin near the fire with the, you know, the flood blankets.
I mean, all the places you think you should be having sex in a cat.
Every sex scene was so hot and it never felt monotonous.
And all the barn scenes where he would come up behind her and like kiss her.
And you want, I mean, we always say that.
Like, you just want to be in the scene.
Yeah.
Oh, so good.
Yeah.
After they visit that his special place, like they get back to the ranch a couple days later,
Casey shows up with that hoe from town that, and she's six months pregnant.
This is one.
Yeah, her name's shy.
Chiana.
Probably, probably short for.
It's Cheyenne, but it's spelled C-H-Y-A-N-A-H.
Right.
So maybe it is.
Shiana.
Shiana.
Diana? I don't know. Very red.
We all read it. So it's hard.
Chai.
Chai. Chai the whore.
It was weird. It was very hillbilly trashy spelling.
Hillbilly stripper.
Yeah.
We're going to offend every listener.
Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
I'm sorry. I'm involved.
But Layla and Coulter devastated.
But they agree, like, we have to stay away from each other.
Like, but then Casey wants to take Laila.
into town because her birthday's coming up.
They go out for the night.
All four of them go.
And Layla's been on edge all night because she can't touch Colt.
Well, not only she can't touch Cole, Cheap Girl, Cheyenne is like throwing and flirting
and touching him and like making it super uncomfortable.
He's clearly disgusted by this girl.
He's running.
She's six months pregnant too.
It's like, what do you think?
With his son's kid.
His son's child.
So we think that's pretty gross.
So there's a group of Casey's friends at the bar, and Layla makes friends with one of these girls.
Because she decides, you know, I've been so on edge.
I'm just getting hammered tonight.
I'm just going to let loose.
She pairs up with a girl that she meets, and they are dancing, and the evil Pearson brothers show up and say,
we'd like to buy you to a drink.
Well, the girlfriend is like, sure, and she, like, swigs back whatever they give her.
Layla's, like, aware enough to know I am not drinking one thing.
thing these sleazy guys give me.
Because she used a bartend.
Yes.
She knows their sleazy.
She also has a brain.
She knew.
She was warned about them.
So they start strong arming these girls and pushing them towards the door.
So basically they can kidnap and rape them.
That's their intent.
And I have to say, what happens next felt very easy.
It was rushed.
And convenient.
Yes.
It was rushed.
Wait, what?
Because suddenly they're in handcuffs.
Like they don't, I mean, there's no.
Yeah.
I mean, there's a little.
bit peppered throughout the book, like, the sheriff is Colt's really good friend and everybody
knows and, like, they all know that no one's pressed charges. And so this was sort of the
thing that they needed. So I guess there were some undercover cops there. Like, they basically was
like a sting operation, but we didn't really know any of that was coming. So it did feel really
easy for us as reading. This isn't a very nice sting operation because they let that girl get roofied.
Like, she ended up. But they didn't because the cop came in and
took her out of the scene. Well, they took her away, but she drank it. But they almost had to let her drink
it in order to catch them. Like, that was the intention. Right. After the arrest, Colt comes and
runs over to make sure she's okay. And he's like, meet me in the bathroom. And so they meet in the
bathroom. They lock the door and they have sex in there. Yeah, they do. Hot, but also disgusting.
Oh, come on. Everybody's done one. Everybody's done a bathroom.
of sex.
Come on.
You got to be lying if you say you have it.
I'd have to really dig through my college memories to remember.
Layla tries to tell Colt in that moment that she loves him.
And he's like, let's not do that.
Not today.
So he kind of stops her.
But he's like, let's not say these things in a gross bar bathroom.
So I was okay with him kind of stopping her in the moment.
Oh, I think he was the right thing.
thing to do. Yeah. But they get back to the ranch and they sneak a hug. And this is when
Chiana, Chiana. Chia, Chiana. Hoare. So this is after they've all gone to bed. And Lela comes out for a glass of
water. And this is when the whore comes and confronts her. She saw those two hugging in the barn. And then she
At some point. Yeah. At some point. And then she says, you're not fooling anybody. I know what's going on here.
They were obviously hot for each other and they were living in the same house as Casey and this girl.
Like she just.
It was obvious.
And that's why she was playing it up too.
That's why she was throwing her tits in front of him.
And she's like, ooh, hey, touchy, touchy.
She basically says to Layla, I am going to tell Casey unless you leave tomorrow morning, be gone.
Be out of, get out of here.
And ruin their relationship and ruin Casey's bull riding career by causing a bunch of dropper.
And I'm going to ruin your life as being up here, you know, screwing around with her.
Or, yeah.
Yeah.
She was going to leave anyway.
In a couple days, she was supposed to leave.
So she packs her bags, gets up early, leaves a note saying her aunt needed her, and so she's heading out.
But Colt finds her in the driveway before she goes and tells her to find that sweet spot angel, take your aim and hit that target.
They say that a lot in the book.
It's kind of their thing.
Well, they said it because he took her out and taught her to shoot in case she was
ever in a predicament where these guys were coming after her.
But he was like, here's the gun.
Learn how to shoot.
It was just the perfect thing to say.
It was.
The cabin was his sweet spot.
I know.
And he said, this is my sweet spot.
So then she's leaving.
And he's saying, go find your sweet spot.
Like, you're home.
It was really sweet.
And he didn't make her feel bad.
And he just like let her go, you know.
And it was like, oh.
She told him that this chie woman's.
Black County.
She did tell him why she was leaving.
Yeah, he wasn't wondering.
Which I'm glad because it didn't feel like she was rushing like she didn't care.
Like he knew why she was leaving.
And they both knew eventually.
I mean, if they were going to keep this from Casey, this had to be the way it ended.
So the next thing we know, five months have gone by and every day without cult is torture for Lelah.
She's really struggling.
This was the hardest part of the book.
Well, luckily it wasn't too long.
She's a week from graduation and she's making plans with her Bessie.
And I have to say her friend Sage is hilarious.
The banter between them was so cute.
And like I hope we all, like I have you guys.
But, you know, everybody should have a girlfriend.
They can banter with this way.
And I just thought the writing was really good between the girlfriends too.
She's got a week to graduation and she has to work at this rodeo.
And she runs into Casey who has finally.
who has finally cleaned up his act.
And she's really impressed and he runs up and hugs her.
And she asked him about house fatherhood.
And he's like, oh, that's right.
You wouldn't have known.
That baby wasn't mine.
And he goes, it was my dad's.
And she loses.
She's like, oh, fuck, oh, fuck, oh, fuck.
And he's like, calm down.
I'm kidding.
He's like, but you just.
just verified everything I knew already myself. He's like, I knew it. And he's not mad. He's just like,
I was a total ass to you. You always deserved better than me. He tells her that Colt helped him get
sober and got his life back on track and he apologizes profusely about stealing that money from her.
Casey was a fuck boy. She was never in love with him. Well, he wasn't in love with her either. They were just
having fun. Yeah.
He tells her Colt has been miserable since the day she left.
And he kind of explains to her what happened with the pregnancy.
So basically, Cheyenne, the whore, Shiana, she was related to these Pearson brothers.
Somehow they weren't cousins.
And I don't know how that worked.
I feel like they are.
Distance the mountains.
He claims they weren't.
But what-ofs.
Luckily, that baby's not his.
Casey tells Lila to call his dad and she says, I'll think about it.
She's like, I'll think about it, but he doesn't even own a phone.
How am I going to call?
And she thinks that.
Like, how do I call?
If she wanted to, because she's been cyber-stalking the ranch.
Well, on the Instagram and stuff, but he's hard to get a hold of because there's no, he doesn't
have a cell phone.
There's no Wi-Fi or it's intermittent.
And she just needs to get to graduation.
And she's been thinking about the Ridge and she's been stalking his Instagram.
And she's thinking about him.
She just hasn't made up her mind yet.
I think her running into Casey just kind of was a relief.
But you're right.
She had to get to graduation.
It was a week away.
And so next thing we know, we're at graduation.
And she's wearing this, she has these green eyes.
And they talk about her green eyes a lot in the book.
A lot.
And she's wearing this dress that matches her eyes.
And Sage tells her she's smoking hot, 10 out of 10.
I'd bang you.
Like, you know, we're getting the idea that she looks amazing.
Good for the validation.
Yeah.
And Layla Walker.
the stage and guess who's waiting under a tree with flowers at the ceremony after she walks
the stage.
So get out your tissues, ladies.
He found her on Instagram or whatever where it was posted and drove all night to be there.
12 hours.
Well, Casey got him a phone and then gave him a crash course in Instagram.
Forced him.
Instagram stalked her and then drove overnight.
Very up. Very out. It was so sweet. Casey went back home and was like, I'm going to train you on how to use a phone.
But he's only in his 40s. So to me, I'm like, you're only in your 40s. But he's a cremudgeon. He's a curmudgeon cowboy who doesn't have a cowboy.
Yeah. And that's part of his chair. That's not what he, he didn't care about anything else, but his cows.
And that for her, that's perfect. And he loved it. Yeah, she loved it. Anyway, like I said, get out your tissues.
Because these are the things he tells her under the tree.
He tells her he would follow her anywhere.
He loves the ranch, but he loves her more.
And he tells her she owns his black fucking heart,
and he can't go another day without letting her know how deeply he is in love with her.
And he's waiting, and she tells him she loves him too.
And you're just, I don't know about you guys, but I was like, like, just.
Can't say I cry.
I didn't cry, but I was like, that's hot.
That's so hot.
It was so nice.
You want someone to say that to you.
Yeah.
And he tells her she's his miracle.
And it was like all the right words.
They are inseparable from that point on.
Basically, the book ends with them driving back to Crimson Ridge and stopping to have sex along the way.
In the back of the truck.
So then Layla tells Colt, take me home.
And this is where the book ends.
She really always said, my home is worse.
you are. And she loved the ranch and really fell in love with the ranch and felt like it was like a,
because she had a very strange upbringing and her mom was like absent and her aunt ended up raising her.
Her aunt had dementia. It was in a home. So she really didn't have a home. And he filled that
hole for her. And she obviously filled a hole for him too. And it's just so sweet. And the sex was
so good. He filled a lot of holes for her, you know. He did. Oh my gosh. He did. He did. Multiple
time. I can't remember how many times I text you all.
and said, I don't want it to end.
I know.
So good.
I think I started it and I was like, oh my God, I started it.
It's so good.
And then the next thing I know, Lynn is like, I never want this to end.
And then it was like, oh, that's so good.
And you guys were getting ahead of me and I'm like, wait.
I'm just like.
Okay.
So the guy that we didn't talk about is his friend that's up in the mountain too.
That's got to be the next book, right?
It is.
I thought for sure, like he and Sage were going to hook up at some point, right?
Oh.
Um, it's a little disturbing some of the stuff that I've read.
So I'm almost like it needs to make the list.
Okay.
Really?
Yeah.
And I'll find the part.
There's something about he's jacking off or something and his niece turns around.
He didn't know it was his niece.
And I'm like, what is happening on the mountain?
I need to know.
Okay.
So we need to read the second book.
I will absolutely read anything this author.
Yeah.
Same.
It was good.
It was so, so good.
adopted uncle and gruff tattooed cowboy.
That's a gay romance?
Adopted uncle, no, so that's the niece.
She's not a real niece.
Right.
She's not a blood relief.
What's the name of the book?
Raving this store.
I've heard that one's very, very good also.
But that would be sue taboo for you, Jin.
But that guy sounded super hot.
He's tatted up.
He's in his 30s.
He's a mountain guy too.
That would bother me to adopt it.
And this is why I didn't like credence because it was the adopt.
uncle. So there is a way you can make it work. But in this situation, he was her legal guardian.
And I did not like that part because he was a authority figure to her. And then he ended up taking her
virginity. And I was like... You just need to just dispense with any moral. Legalities. Yeah. Also,
I don't feel like this author would do that or go in that direction. I hope not. Based on what I'm
reading. But I think it... I mean, I would be willing to put it on the list.
I, hey, I'll read anything this author writes.
Like, I liked her a lot.
Yeah, this book was so good.
So what are you writing about?
Who wants to start?
I rate this book a four and a half.
Okay.
Ooh.
I couldn't put it down.
I didn't want it to end.
The descriptions of the scenery was amazing.
I felt the character development was good.
I thought, like, the angst was just, I, we talked about it a bit earlier.
But, like, usually I'm annoyed with the angst.
I'm just ready for them to get past it.
Yeah.
The angst made it that bunch of better when they got there.
Yeah.
It was written so good.
The sex scenes were amazing.
Even the son, father, it didn't creep me out.
And the only reason I'm rating it half of Star Moore is like the end where they weren't together was a bit like sappy for me.
The pining.
But you got your AGA.
Oh, yeah.
I loved the H-EA.
Was it?
It was the third.
You just didn't like the third act breakup?
The third act like sort of the, oh, I'm, I'm in love with him and the hats on my pillow.
and like, you know, like the stalking, the Instagram was just became not angstyy but sappy and kind of sad.
And I was just like, meh.
Like, I don't know.
That's just part.
It was so short.
Yeah.
It did connect the breakup to the reunion.
And so it's fine and whatever.
I only half a star deduction, but the whole book was freaking good.
Four and a half stars.
All right.
Kambor, what did you think?
So I would go four and a half stars, not because of the breakup, but because I wanted more with the Pearson brothers.
I wanted more of a.
that danger and the saving you and the jumping in.
I mean, I really thought we were going somewhere when she went out to get the firewood
and the firewood hit the bare trap.
And I was like, okay, I wanted some more like bravado.
There wasn't a lot of antagonists, you know.
Yeah.
We didn't have a ton of that.
No, they were kind of in the backdrop and he's so protective.
I wanted him to have a real reason to be protective and, like, really jump.
in there and like kicks a ass, you know? Oh, like she like lost a leg and then he was out.
Well, not so much the leg is like they attack her or they're holding her by knife or, you know,
a little more drama there. I'm with you, Lynn, the sappiness at the end. I'm like, do we really
need to talk about Instagram and stock, stock, stock. Okay, my dude's going, oh, that's great.
This 42-year-old took a crash course on Instagram. So other than that, I mean, I thought the
writing was amazing. I thought the characters were great. Like, I could not think of a better and
hotter name or persona for a cowboy than Colton Wilder. Every time he ran his fingers through
those curls and then put his hat on. Yeah. Or even the backwards baseball cap when he was like,
oh, flip the half around or, you know, it's just too hot. He was too hot. So you could picture
a half for me. You could. 100%. So for me, I, this is a lot. This is a lot. I, this is a lot.
of five. And like, I don't need the drama. He was obsessed with her. But he was obsessed that the third
act breakup was short and appropriate. And him coming to meet where her was perfect and everything about
this book. I love. This is my kind of romance. It definitely had all your check marks, right? He had,
he had money. Right? So you like the billionaire. Yes. I like billionaires. He had Insta love.
Check. He had happily ever after.
He was obsessed with her.
He was obsessed and overprotective.
I mean, there wasn't anything he was blessed in the dick department.
Oh, Big D.
He was an amazing lover.
Like, you know.
He loved giving Earl.
And all the places.
And also like sappy.
Oh, and he was classy.
He was classy.
We have sex in the bathroom, but let's not say love because this is a dirty place.
It's in the wrong place.
The dirty place.
Dirty things.
I'm happy to fuck you here.
I'm just to tell you I love you here.
Right, those are precious words.
She'd be in a precious queen.
Yeah, no, very classy cowboy.
It was so good.
And spice for me was, I'm going to say four and a half, five.
Five.
I was five.
I go five.
Spice.
Yeah.
Just the truck scene.
The sex was so good.
And honestly, usually the angst cuts it down for me.
And I've said this like, like the angst made it better.
Like it made and they finally got together that much better.
And the sex was great.
And those like two and a half weeks, they.
We were laying it on was just so good.
And you just didn't want it to end.
It was so good.
And one of our barometers for this is you want to be there.
And I wanted to be an ever.
I wanted to be there.
I wanted to be looking at those wranglers on that horse's ass.
Sprunging through the mountains.
Yeah.
I wanted to be in the hot springs.
Yeah.
No.
Oh, with you.
Yeah.
With the hat.
I wouldn't wear the hat.
The whole thing.
I wanted it all.
Yes.
So nice job, Elliot.
This was an incredible book.
I would read another one of her books in a minute.
So, yeah, we may, you may see the sequel on our TBR coming up.
