We talk about the NBA, which we're doing right now in emergency fashion. Joining us from Naples, Florida, with the Philadelphia 76ers cap sheets in front of them is Bobby Marks.

Gentlemen, Free Agency Part 2 has began. How about that? A little late July free agency. Joining us from Chapel, North Carolina, where his college tour, not his college tour, his daughter's college tour, continues, is Ban McMahon. Howdy, partners? No, I did graduate college, although the time it took me was kind of like the time that it took LeBron to make his free agency decision. It was historically long, for sure. LeBron has chosen the 76ers in case you haven't heard. I believe that there are two reasons why he chose the 76ers, although this is obviously very fresh and there will be more information will come out. But as he said in his comments that he made on social media after it was announced, he has chosen. The number one thing is winning a championship immediately, which is not unheard of or shocking, but it wasn't 100% clear whether winning a championship this upcoming season was priority one.

It was chasing happiness. And we didn't know. Did happiness mean or his family was comfortable? In fact, he openly said in his comments that family wasn't a priority here. So once he said, you know, now that we know what he was thinking and he said that winning a championship immediately this year was his priority, I think that put Golden State and Miami off the list because I don't think either of those teams could win a championship immediately with him joining. Maybe you disagree, but I think if that was truly how he felt,

it sort of put those teams aside. I'm not sure how seriously he considered Minnesota and Denver. If Minnesota were in Denver were still being considered, I think that they could have stayed on the list in that case. Certainly Cleveland, I think, would have stayed on the list in that case. Secondly, I think the other reason that was very much in the favor of the 76ers was that their centerpiece player or a centerpiece player is a clutch client, which is Tyrese Maxie. And having a comfort level there going into a situation where there's going to have to be sharing of the ball, etc., you know, relying on having that basis there. You know, Nick Nurse, the coach is a clutch client, too.

I don't think that is as important. By the way, it's his birthday today. Happy birthday. Nick Nurse's birthday. That's a good birthday present. I actually was talking to Nick over the weekend because I was at an old concert venue in Des Moines. And he was all fired up about me being at this concert venue in Des Moines because, you know, he's an Iowan who loves music. Anyway, so that is my viewpoint with more McMahon.

I really do think that when those two things were combined, he felt that Philly edged out. He definitely had multiple conversations with their star players, Joelle and Bede, Maxie, Jalen Brown, and they obviously have some sort of basis going forward. But I don't think that he probably had conversations with other guy. I don't know for sure, but my guess is he talked with players on other teams too. That doesn't necessarily mean anything.

But that's what I believe is we're doing this, you know, in the immediate aftermath. Yeah, and look, obviously any kind of sentimentality did not factor in here. I always wanted to see the full circle, you know, final chapter, return to Cleveland. You know, that storyline ended up not matter or return to Miami. He went with where he felt like he had the best chance to win a championship. It is a two-year deal, you know, second-year player option, but a, you know, two-ish-year commitment. by LeBron, we've laid out several times before,

and each of the last three instances when he changed teams, it was that second year that he won a championship. And I think if you look at their roster, like, this is a hell. If you had this roster out for your fantasy basketball draft, you'd feel great. Like, wow, this is a ton of talent. These are a bunch of guys who've put up big numbers. I'm fascinated and curious by exactly how this all fits on the floor.

You've got a lot of guys who have this. been have the right to feel like they should be the number one option there's going to have to you know be some sacrifice just going to have to be kind of big figuring out of how all that talent messes together now it doesn't have to be figured like what this team looks like in terms of playing style and chemistry and all that when the season starts in october versus what it looks like when the playoffs roll around could be too drastically different things i i'm going to be very careful of knee jerking about any potential early season bumps in the road. But I do think stylistically, you know, Nick Nurse for his birthday has a very unique challenge gifted to him.

I go back to, it feels like it was years ago, but it was only a month ago when Brian said, go do something to these teams. When he was told, we were talking about LeBron, he says, go make a move. Go do something. Right. If you want him, go do something. And this was before. Philadelphia made the trade for Jalen Brown and I just look at that trade basically putting them in putting them now in the conversation put them in the conversation

like the Jailon Brown trade doesn't happen if it doesn't happen they're let's face it they're not probably in this mix of a mix of teams here and everything like dad and when and let's be on I didn't think he was going to Philadelphia

I thought he was going to Miami I really did and I Then you kind of look at it big picture and everything. You can understand why. But I think when you look at it with, and what it does is that you had Dean Wade as your starter. Now you push him to a reserve, right? It kind of pushes everybody down the pecking order here. It's fascinating, you know, just from a financial, he's making 2.3% of the cap.

How about that? That's cool. And by the way, you mentioned Jaylon Brown. and obviously we've talked a lot about kind of the way that decision makers in the league view Jalen Brown and value him relative to his salary. That eye test versus analytics thing

and Bob, you know, it's a sensitive subject for you. But it's also, in some ways, it's like executive versus players. And LeBron was among the guys late in the season who was publicly,

I don't know if lobbying is the right word, but publicly saying, hey, I think Jalen Brown, has a legitimate case for the MVP of the league. So LeBron clearly values Jalen Brown. And as you said, you know, that was a factor in the decision. Listen, Bobby, don't even worry about Jalen Brown. Jalen Brown got caught on the mic or reading his lips that Broughtney, James, you know, shouldn't be in the NBA.

And LeBron is obviously, you know. Abram forgave him. People can forgive. He might be his new teammate. You never know. right? Yeah, well, they don't actually have a roster spot for it. We'll talk about that in a minute. Yeah, no, what I said, Bobby, was that I, you know, I felt like the Cav should have considered trading for Jalen Brown. This was during the free agency time. I thought, you know, when that was known that LeBron was a, you know, because when YonS was available, we didn't necessarily know LeBron wasn't going to be a Laker.

You could have guessed, but we didn't know for sure. We did know that when Jalen Brown was definitely available. and the calves had the calves could I think it would have taken Evan Mowgli see and for me that doesn't make you better that's not a step forward I'm not arguing that they should have done let me ask you a question do you do it like it's similar like when we were talking about golden state maybe back you know back in free agency like do you do would you still do it would you still do that deal knowing even if he didn't come no no I don't know I don't think no I don't think so more hoop collective podcast after this Prime presents perfect pairings What pairs with Reacher on Prime? The Cavs obviously elected not to make Evan Mobley available for either Janice of Tenacompo or Jalen Brown. Because if they did, they probably would have had a very good chance to get them. I know that the Celtics got the first

round pick and the swap from Philly. But Evan Mobley is not Paul George at this point in his career. So, but yeah, you know, the Cavs roster since the

since they got swept in the conference finals, They have lost Dean Wade and they have lost Keon Ellis, which, you know, Dean Wade was a part-time starter. Keon-Elts was a fringe rotation player. They lost those two players. I mean, arguably, they're two best perimeter defenders. Dean Wade certainly their best perimeter defenders. Yes, certainly very good perimeter defenders. And so, like, that's, you know, they had a second round pick, Malik Thomas, who had a good Summer League.

That's what they added. So the Cavs, you know, you look at, you know, you compare. to the 76ers and the 76ers have powered up. And I will say this, Bobby, Boston made their Jalen Brown decision for various reasons. They believed in it and made the decision. But Boston has to be feeling a certain way right now because the Eastern Conference is going to be difficult for them to win, I think. Not impossible, but it's going to be difficult for them to win. And I'm also going to put Detroit in this.

If you're Detroit and you've gone through this offseason and you were the number one seed last year and you've watched, obviously, the Knicks won the championship, you've seen what Philly has done, you've seen what Miami has done, and you look at what you've done. I wonder how Detroit and Cleveland are feeling about the hands they're holding today. I mean, just look at the east, right? I mean, look at the Eastern Conference as far,

or even like Atlanta made some good decisions this all season. It's like, where are they in the pecking order in the east? And with Boston, it's like, listen, you could say it was apron related or depth related or maybe they just didn't like the play. But don't talk to me about finances when it was based. And that's the biggest. And I know like everybody gets caught up on the apron in Boston. Like they traded a max for a max. The apron was last summer.

Yeah. Jim Brown was not about money. Right. Or, yeah. Because they could have still done Mitch and they still could have done the other two guys with extent. You could have still done everything, right? So like I need like that. Don't use the apron as an excuse for Boston.

Like that's the reality here. But at the end of the day, and they'll live with it that the trade basically helped get LeBron to Philadelphia. I mean, that's a big part of it. It's kind of like when Milwaukee made the deal to get Dame, which I liked at the time. And boy, was I wrong about that. It blew up in their face. But in making that deal, it's like they indirectly delivered Drew Holiday to Boston, and Drew Holiday was a finishing piece to the Celtics championship puzzle.

You know, in this case, the Celtics decided that they were moving Jaylon Brown, and they were going to take the best offer, which ended up being not a great offer, but it was the best they had, and they clearly had made the determination. Jayon Brown cannot come back. and they indirectly helped deliver LeBron to Philly as part of the deal. And by the way, LeBron. I mean, well, let me just ask you this. I think a lot of us, I certainly, like I had my head in my hands for the bucks when Michael Kitt, when, sorry, I'm looking at my guy.

I just, I just, I'm just watching golf. I have to cop to this. I just saw my, my. guy Michael Kim shoot 59. I'm totally distracted. He made the PGA golf free. He wants everybody to know that. He made a 25 footer on the 18th,

he told us you to shoot 59. Amazing. Hey, you've been friends with LeBron for a lot longer than you've been friends with Michael Kim. I have a lot more conversations with Michael Kim and I do LeBron. The,

when I had my head in my hands when, for the bucks, when, when Drew Holiday ended up on the Celtics. I was like, oh my God, this trade has already backfired on that. Yeah. I don't feel that way necessarily about the Celtics with LeBron coming here.

I think the Celtics, even if they knew LeBron was going to go there, I think they probably still do this trade. Well, because they clearly felt like they had to trade Jalen Brown. And so, you know, again, we've talked all about the value of that. But again, I just, I didn't feel, and LeBron never called to ask my advice, but I did not feel that Philly was a great fit for him just because I don't know where he is. is like in the pecking order. And there was clear frustration to the point where he said he considered retirement about this season in L.A., where he ended up being distant third in the pecking order offensively, even though he thrived in that role.

And now it's like, look, Embed's going to need the ball. Jetham Brown clearly enjoys being the number one guy. Tyrese has thrived as the number one guy. Like, is LeBron willing to kind of be the old, wise, facilitator and distributor first and foremost. And then, again, stylistically, here's a fascinating thing for me. This team has, you know, I say it's

been Tyrese's team the last couple years, but it's still Joel and Beads franchise. All right. Here's the NBA, the rank and fast break points scored last season. Tyrese Maxie first. LeBron James, second. That's because LeBron,

that was the only way you could score. Because he had to run to score. I'm sorry. Jalen Brown, 10th, V.J. Edgecom, who's probably the best athlete of the four, 14th. So I think one way to really kind of figure out, like, how does this all fit is just to play at, like, Audubon speed. And then, you know, whoever has the ball when you're ready to dunk it, throws it down. Now, how does Joelle and Bede fit? Now, he could fit kind of the same way I do when I'm playing pickup basketball. is not cross half court on most offensive possessions.

But again, but that's not, you're not going to play that basketball in the playoffs. Like, I think the Sixers, if we're going to have a basketball discussion about the Sixers, sitting here the day this happened, my speculation is that F.J. Edgecombe, Tyrese Maxie, and Jalen Brown are going to be the heavy lifters during the regular season. And obviously LeBron is going to be, have a significant role. But LeBron is not going to play him back to backs. There is going to be times when he takes some time off. Same with Embedde. You're going to want LeBron and Embed ready to go for April.

And you do what you have to do to have LeBron and Embed ready to go for April. Now, one thing I will say, as LeBron has been tweeting out pictures of himself at 5.30 in the morning, doing these workouts, you didn't see that last summer. Because LeBron couldn't do it last summer because he was dealing with first to sprained knee and then with the sciatica. He was, I suspect, you know, knocking on wood that he does not suffer anything, that he will be in much better physical condition coming into this season than last season.

That said, Nick Nurse's job from day one will be to have LeBron and Bid ready to roll by the postseason. And Bid played 38 games last year. And that was, you know, when you include the playoffs, there's the most games he's played in three years. I was going to say that that's not like... And then at Backup Center, they signed... Top 40.

Yeah. And it's kind of a young lot. Well, Dean Wade can, depending on who they're playing, Dean Wade can play some center. But by the way, Bobby, real quick, as we sit here at this exact moment, right, the Sixers can't even functionally sign LeBron. Is that correct?

Can you explain that? That's correct. It's because he's signing a two-year deal. Are we sure he's going to sign a two-year deal? Maybe not. That's what sports CEO and game over show host, Rich Paul. The bronze agent told Shams.

I understand. Can you explain it, Bobby? Sure. Because so when you, if you sign a one-year veteran deal for cap tax purposes, $2.4 million counts against the cap. It doesn't matter if you're 10 years of service or five years of service, $2.4 million. Because this is a- What if you're 23 years of service? Doesn't matter.

10-plus. There's no range. There's no range. He's in a 10-plus range. Right. Because this is a two-year deal. He's in a 10 times 2 plus range. Because this is a two-year deal, which is 3.9 in the first year, there is no, I guess, salary reimbursement.

The full amount counts against the cap. The same thing as DeAndre Jordan with the Pelicans, except for in this case, getting LeBron at that number is a massive discount. So you don't feel so bad about not getting the extra savings. Yeah. So when you do it, when you do the math, they're technically, they're hard-capped at the first apron. They pushes them over to the first apron by like 600,000. So the reason they're hard-capped at the first apron is because the trade that they did with Jalen Brown, they took more money in than they sent out. Is that correct?

Slightly? Yeah, I mean, they've hard-capped themselves multiple times. If you can do it. Dean-Wade. Oh, Dean-Witt. That's right. That's right. Hock-40.

I think they've hard-capped themselves four times. You can only do it once, but for them, they did it four times. another player, you need to sign a one-year deal. Is that correct? Correct. Correct. So we'll see. This is the footnote. Okay.

This is why Bobby is here. But, But as far as the Sixers go, you would think that their starting lineup when they're fully healthy. We don't know when they're fully healthy is Edgecom and Maxie at the guards, Brown and LeBron at the forwards, and beat at center. That is a hell of a line. That's loaded. Again, I think it's going to take some time for all the fit stuff to be figured out.

But that is, correct me, if you guys feel like I'm, wrong, the most athletic back court in the NBA. Well, and then let's talk about their backups. So their backups would be Dean Wade, who can play three, four, or five. That's a versatile player. Anthony Simons. A bucket get her off the bench. Who they signed who will be, you know, a shooter.

A Dem Bona, who was a quality backup big, right? He's a play hard guy, that's for sure. Athletic guy who plays hard. And then they have Justin Edwards and Dominion. Nick Barlow is back up forwards. Edge rotation players. It's a pretty... And the rookie that they drafted.

Yeah, he was good in summary. LeBaron and LeBaron. He's a guard. He's a guard. It's a pretty good... It's a pretty good 10-man team. Well, and again, I think it's the most athletic backcourt, and I think it's maybe the most athletic forward tandem.

Even though I love LeBron's turning 42 this year, but tell me a more athletic forward tandem than Jatham Brown and the Bronn James. And again, Dean Wade was starting in the first. the playoffs for the team that went to the conference finals last year. I'm not saying that he was driving force, but that's a, that's a, you know, that's a decent big man rotation. Even if you're down in Bede for half the season, their big man rotation is substantial. Yeah. And Jetham Brown, I'm sorry, Dean Wade is probably the guy best suited to chase around a bunch of the elite perimeter scores that they'll see Jalen Brown might be second best suited for that.

that. Well, it's not going to be LeBron. They'll be able to hide LeBron a little bit. It's probably pretty well suited for some of that, too. The shot distribution is going to be fascinating to me. And just how much of a focal point in Bede is offensively is going to be fascinating. Well, this is what I'm sure they've been discussing in these last few weeks. I'm sure LeBron, from my knowledge, LeBron's had multiple conversations.

conversations with these Sixers players. And I'm not saying they got the X's a nose out, but I don't want to guess what was in those conversations. But my guess is how they were going to play would be discussed. I don't think it was where the best restaurants in Philly are. Tell you what, your guy Gansy, man. He doesn't come in, you know, timid in his first crack as the, as a GM. I will say this.

Like, LeBron's no Mike Gansy since he was a teenager. You know, I'm not saying that that, like, again, Again, I think the reasons he chose Philly were because they can win immediately and because Tyrese is like one of the central pieces of the team and he knows he can trust him. I think those, I think that's driving it. But the fact that he's coming in having some background with Gansy, who was also in Cleveland all the years he was in Cleveland. Gansy was in the Cleveland front office for a decade.

And Nurse is also a clutch guy. I think, you know, and also look, you're putting your hands and saying, we believe in Bob Myers. You know, if, you know, if there's a situation here, Bob Myers, you know, if there's an issue that Bob Myers' voice is there. So I got to tell you, I don't, you know, I saw Bob in Vegas last week. I, last week in Vegas, the Sixers didn't think they were getting him. Okay. So, you know, maybe that was, maybe they were throwing him off, but they didn't think they were getting him. So it'll be interesting to see how much LeBron and it's, and going back, like, I'm, I just can't. keep on going back to that Nick series too, where they basically got, you know, infiltrated by Nick's fans

and they lose, they get swept, and they're thinking like, this thing is, it's almost like a dead end, right? Dead end roster. I mean,

it's amazing how things change quickly. Such a humiliating way to go. And I said it then that I almost felt like it would have been better fit a loss game seven in the first round and the way that the second round played out. I mean, wow,

that was a rough way to end when it's 80% Knicks fans and you're just getting blown out to finish a sweep and it's on your home floor. But nobody will be thinking about that when the season starts. I mean, they have made what the Jaylon Brown trade and the bronze sign. Those are the two biggest splashes, certainly in terms of publicity. Well, I don't know how you guys, but our podcast that posted on Friday morning, I feel good about calling the Sixers my winner. You like to revise that?

No, I do not like to revise that. I like to say. Well, how about what do you think? What do you think opening? I wouldn't be surprised. I had a little bit of scuttle butt like this in Los days. I wouldn't, I wouldn't be surprised if we go triple had or opening night.

Which is. It started having a game at four o'clock. Having a, I wouldn't be, and I'm sure I'll get aggravated and get like heck on this. And I'm just speaking out loud. I wouldn't, I wouldn't be.

surprised if we go like you know Boston, Philly at 4 someone at New York at 7 and then the Western Conference game at night What's the Christmas game? Is it LeBron going back to L.A.? Is it J.M. Brown against the Celtics? Like the Bronn takes precedence with the TV

schedule, right? I mean he just does. I would think Philly New York would probably be Christmas right? Oh, wow. You'd have to have Philly New York. No, no, Philly Boston on Christmas. Jaylen Brown's return to Boston.

I just think LeBron in L.A. might be it. I also give LeBron a Christmas at home. Well, that's true. That's true. I'll tell you what. I know that Adam Silver was like grumbling about the way this is all fallen. Like all the Philly Cleveland games are interesting. The Philly New York games are super interesting.

Philly Boston. Philly Boston is like in the competition for, Christmas and for Martin Luther King Day, whatever, opening week. Philly, L.A., both of those games. Did Philly Miami? Did Philly's going to be on TV all the time? Yeah, yeah. I mean, this is like when the heat, I mean,

this is, this is, now, this, this, this doesn't have the villain, uh, complexity that the, that the Heat big three did, but like, every time the, the, the heat played, it was an event. I, I don't know if that'll be the same here, but like,

Just think of the delicious matchups that Philly has instantaneously. Like there's 10, 10 premium games on the top of my head involving Philly. No question. And yeah, no doubt about that. Now, I just want to caution. It was a couple summers ago when the 76ers were the big winners of the summer. And where did Bon Tim's go on his little training camp vacation? I believe he was in the Bahamas.

Yeah, but in the Bahamas and, you know, basically, hey, we're going to kind of slow play it with Paul George and Joelle and B, and we'll microwave that chemistry come playoff time. So I just bring that up, just to point out, just because you make the splashes moves of the summer, doesn't mean you've made the biggest improvements. Hey, hey, hey, I am a prime example A. Right. Listen, we had a sports illustrated cover. The team nobody wants to play. So I will, and as I said, the beauty of the off season is everybody, you're on paper, right? Like the paper, like, everybody, and then you get to train camp, you're like, holy crap, what just happened.

This is not what we thought of. But, yeah, I mean, we're on, everybody's on the honeymoon period and everybody loves your roster. And everybody will talk about Philly and New York and all these teams and stuff like that. But when we get to late September or early October, you got to roll out that ball. It's a hell of an NBA 2K roster. There's no question about that. But, you know, the season is not played with video game controllers. That's true.
