I think your year was like the year that the most juniors had ever came out early to go to the league. It was starting to trend that way for sure. if I could redo it again, I would leave as a registered sophomore. Wow. Because it's like I'd be going into year nine

seven years in the league thinking to myself like, if I did it again, knowing the same result would happen, what would you do?

I wouldn't say think about getting pulled over, but it's just like a, it's in the back room. If I get pulled over, do I have everything that I need to make sure this goes the right way? You know what I'm saying? So it's kind of just like subconscious. Like it's just something that's ingrained.

what um questions I have for you. What have your guys' conversations been like with like some of your white friends and your groups around times like these? Because I want to say like me personally, like you, you're wanting to listen and educate and do all these things. But there's also some ways that you try to navigate because it's like, oh, you should already, the fact that you're asking me, I don't, I don't like that you're asking me because you should kind of already know steps you need to take and stuff like that. So I guess what are some conversation you guys are having with, say, your white friends now that might be asking you. You you or checking on you or all this shit that everybody's been communicating about now. I mean, I'm all good with asking. I mean, I like once again, as like

just a human. You know what I mean? Like if you're asking, you want to know for a reason. Like, and you just haven't had the education to you know what I mean? Like you haven't been well versed in it. Like if you ask that question, you're asking from a place of I want to gain the knowledge and know.

I would say a lot of the friends I do have that are white, are kind of aware of their privilege. Like, they understand what to do because I came from a private high school, like a private prep school. And all we talked about was diversity and all that type of stuff.

But it's a good conversation to have, you know, creating a safe space for everyone to talk and understand and learn about things that they're not necessarily exposed to. Yeah. Like when I was 10, I had a state ID. Not because I was doing anything important. But because my mom was like, if you get pulled over, no one's going to believe you're 10.

You're 510 and 240 pounds. You can't say you're 10 years old. So like that's something that's real for me. Like that's crazy as hell. Yeah. And I like being able to share that with people. So it gives them an understanding of what goes on on the other side of things they don't see and understand. Yeah, I feel that.

I think it's important just to talk about it in general. like we had a workout maybe two weeks ago and Taylor and Cuisenberry, I don't know if they were thinking about it or what, but he had just asked me like, hey, what do you think about everything that's going on? It was like right after the George Floyd thing. Yeah, it was right after it happened. And just the fact that he asked me about it and the point that I got to voice my opinion on it, it was like a big step because that to me, and I don't know if he did it because he

wanted to know, like, but the fact that he cared to know how I felt about it was the biggest thing. And I think that's the part that people needed to realize, like, just listen to somebody talk. Even if you don't agree with it, listen and take their viewpoints on it, and then maybe you'll come away with something different. And like I read your piece that you had put out on, you know, growing up where you grew up and not realizing the things that are, you happening, but you recognize that there is like a different time going on right now to where these things are prevalent. So I think like you said, like the conversation needs to be had.

It's like an elephant in the room. You can't ignore it. But I'm all good with questions. Like when people want to talk about it, that shows to me that you're open to hearing someone else's opinion. Yeah. No, I feel that. Because I've had a couple friends where not, not like necessarily me asking.

Like I wonder, I won't say who it is. But I'm like, hey, if there was one cause that you could probably, that you, that you would donate to right now, like, what would it be like trying to figure out like, you know, there's so many different things being shouted that it's like, hey, if there's one thing, like, what are you guys actually thinking about? And then somebody was like, somebody in the group chat was like, help your white friend. That work. And I'm just like, I, you know, laughed at it.

But I'm thinking, guys, I'm legit trying to come to a, like, I'm legit. trying to learn. Like it's almost like I you people have called and like they want, uh, if they're wanting to learn about anything. So if it's defense and somebody's like wanting to learn the playbook so that stands like oh, you should know about the playbook before you come and ask me. Yeah. I'm just sitting here thinking like guys, my intentions are like, because I don't know what everybody's seeing every day. There's a lot of anger, a lot of emotion. Yeah. Um, but it's like similar situations like that's where you feel like, oh shit like, you know, maybe maybe I am asking too much. Maybe I, maybe I need to figure it out on my own before I like

ask people because you just don't know any headspace that anybody is in 100% you know what i mean yeah like guys like you guys that are okay with having that conversation and okay with saying that you don't have a racist bone in your body you know what i'm saying um when you go out and voice that there may be people that follow you that don't have that same opinion but they see you say it and it starts to resonate with other people um you know i think that was a big thing like you know, especially with athletes, like you see Tannenhill come out and say something like, you know. I think he's done a great job. Yeah, I'm like an example.

Exactly. And there's been other other quarterbacks that have done it. But when you have a white quarterback that stands for that and shows that he's okay with voicing that opinion, that that goes a long way. So I think that's like the start. Like just getting guys that aren't black to voice not just guys, not just guys, but women as well, just to voice that opinion out loud. so that people can start to see that it is okay to say that you don't agree with what's going on right now.

And get very uncomfortable, 100%. Yeah, like just let's not make it taboo. Right, right, right, right. It's okay to speak about it. Right. And that shift in perspective, like you were saying, you don't know who, like, who's watching all the time. Like, when Roger Goodell came out of his video.

For our country, in particular, black people in our country. First, my condolences, the families of George Floyd, Brianna Taylor, Amad Arbery, and all the families who have endured police. To me, like, people were bashing it. People were on board with it and all this stuff. And it's like, it's almost like, it doesn't matter if you think he's being genuine about it or not. And I'm going to say he is, obviously. But it almost doesn't matter because the shift in perspective from the NFL logo standpoint is now happening.

Right. And anybody that's like on the fence or in the gray area and they just watch that video without any opinions around them, it's like, you know, maybe I do need to start paying more attention. and now the NFL's on board, NASCAR's on board. Like you got all this happening to where the shift in perspective is starting to happen, which I think is like encouraging and create some optimism. And hopefully we continue to find ways to fix everything, I guess.

Yeah. You know what I mean? Do you think if this thing happened, whatever, how many years ago in Colin Kaepernick took a knee? Do you think it'd be different for Colin Kaepernick now? Like would he be in the league? Like, yes. Yeah. I think so. I think so. I do. I think so. I do. I do. Me being, me being a white person, I can like see the stuff happening now and it resonate more with me of what actually was mattering and happening back then. Yeah. And I can like say that not because I'm racist or anything, but it's just it's it's so much more obvious now. You know what I mean? I feel like a lot of people are kind of making that.

that transition to where back then it might have all your pride clouds your judgment because you're not necessarily trying to listen or hear anything because you see an NFL player doing that and you just we weren't on that side of it now for me personally like my own personal walk I'm sitting there like man that it it was it wasn't even about all of that stuff like now I know more what it was about back then when Colin was doing it so you thought it was more towards the I didn't think that to me it was like the whole I'm going to stand because of my own reasons. I got you.

So me, I'm not how I was trying to write and explain it. Like objectively removing myself and actually putting myself in their shoes and seeing it and being like, oh, that's okay and fine. Like when that was all happening in our Redskins team, we were having the conversations, I was on, everybody was kind of on board with everybody doing their thing. Yeah. But I'm saying me now in the level of like relevance of everything now,

I would think about it differently. to where I'm like, I'm very understanding of why the kneeling was happening now. You know what I mean? That makes sense. I know I speak a lot. And for everybody listening, like, this is the entire point. It's like getting uncomfortable while having these conversations. Yeah.

Like, I think people took the Black Lives Matter thing out of, out of, like, context. thing it's just right now that's what the emphasis needs to be on we're not saying that people of other races don't matter but you see what's happening and you see the majority of people that it's happening too so when you hear black lives matter that's what it's catered to right right yeah it's like wearing like in a simple form it's like when we wear a Nashville strong shirt after the tornadoes, power going out, like all of this does this happen in Nashville. You wear a Nashville strong shirt and people get behind the cause nationally. Exactly.
