In February of 2024, celebrated illustrator and children's book author,
Patra Mathers and her husband Michael, mailed letters to dozens of friends and family members
to let them know they had died by suicide.
Dear honies, this is goodbye.
By the time you get this letter, both Petra and I will be dead.
Next stop, Wonderland.
Why did they do it?
And what did it do to the people they left behind?

What's going on, guys?
Chase Daniel here, and welcome into the first read.
That is right.
We are finally here.
It is NFL Sunday.
And boy, do we have some games to react to?
Want to just take a little bit of a second and tell you a little bit about the first read.
The first read is Bussing with the Boys recap show from NFL Sunday.
We are going to dive deep into games that matter.
That's always going to be A block.
We're not going to do every single game.
This isn't the place for you.
We're going to do the most important games with the most important storylines that matter the most.
Then most weeks, we're going to do a segment called the quarterback room, probably every week.
What we're going to do, we might do stock up, we might do stock down.
We might do buying.
We might do selling.
Everything in between quarterback playing.
We're just going to break down.
And I'm going to break down what I have seen on tape from these guys.
And then finally we're going to finish a show in the C block, the last block, and we're just going to hit the biggest storylines.
So it's just going to be the overarching theme of the NFL.
We're going to nerd out.
We're going to have fun.
We are going to break down football.
That is what matters.
College football has been going on.
Now it is the NFL time.
So as always, we're presented by America's number one sports book fan duel.
Before we look back in the day, let's look ahead to Monday.
Broncos Chiefs.
And with the reward escalator, what happens on the field can unlock even more profit boost on Fandul.
Here's how it works.
Bet Monday night's game with your 30% profit boost.
Then keep an eye on what happens on the field.
If both teams score a touchdown, you'll get a 25% profit boost.
If any player goes for 100 or more receiving yards, you get a 50% profit boost.
Pretty cool.
And if the Broncos Chiefs turn into a shootout with seven or more total total total.
touchdowns. We'll see. You'll get a 100% profit boost. Head to the app and make this your
most rewarding season ever with FanDuel. All right, boys and girls, let's get into it. A-block,
the games that mattered most, we are going to start with the best game of the entire weekend
so far, and that is the Bills versus the Texans, fireworks everywhere.
in the first half.
35 combined points in the second quarter, mind you.
I thought for sure this would be a defensive battle, everything in between.
Slowed down a little bit in the second half.
I think at one point, Josh Allen was on pace for like 440 total yards.
The bills were on pace to do all sorts of records against this vaunted Texas defense.
I do believe both quarterbacks showed out.
Josh Allen was definitely doing some Josh Allen things.
20 for 29, 334 yards.
four total touchdowns.
Like, the dude had four total touchdowns,
and we talk about this defense of the Houston Texans.
I was extremely surprised.
Let's get into what we're going to call the three things on each game.
My first thing right here,
Josh Allen, he looked like the best player in football,
on the road, arguably against the best defense
in football. He is doing
things that are best player
in the NFL type
things. I love
offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael. We know
what Joe Brady is. Pete
Carmichael, he came over from the Saints
and then he's got a Saints pass. He came
from the Broncos with Sean Payton. I was
with him for three or four years. And I love
this addition to Joe Brady staff because
what you saw from the gate
is they are going to ride
their run game without
a doubt. I mean, it's not only
Josh Allen running the football, but it is that whole team. James Cook looked excellent.
Obviously, I can't remember the last time the bills had two receivers over 100 yards.
Dalton Kincaid led the way and DJ Moore, which we'll get into that here in a little bit.
But I love the fact that Josh Allen was able to use his legs.
Like he used his legs left and right against that Texan team.
And this is the Texas defense that sort of forgot how to tackle.
I mean, it was nonstop over and over.
And I think the big thing for that offense that was missing was DJ Moore.
DJ Moore's prowess at receiver, not only did it allow Dalton Kincaid to get open,
but when Josh Allen needed a shot down the field, man, he took the shot.
It was simple as that.
I would argue that Josh Allen probably didn't have that last year,
and this is the year that he finally does have that.
So that fingerprints of that Pete Carmichael offense,
putting him under center, having DJ Moore,
he changes that entire offense.
And let's get into point two.
So let's talk about C.J. Stroud.
So C.J. Stroud, to me, we're obviously breaking down both quarterbacks.
C.J. Stroud to me, a lot to left.
on the plate last year. I think everyone remembered his game against the New England Patriots
and the divisional round game. I was actually able to call that game for ESPN on NFL
Playbook, which is an alt-cast up there. And I think he had four turnovers that game. And so when
you have a game like that, you have to live with that the entire off-season. And when you live
with that the entire off-season, there's a lot of stuff that goes through your head, hey, can I still do it?
hey, we don't have an extension yet,
hey, all these different things that matter.
And he was able to stay calm in the pocket.
He was able to make the right decisions.
Obviously got sacked at the end of the game.
I understand that.
26 to 38, 274 yards, two touchdowns.
Calm decisive.
And the thing that I like the most,
I think this Bill's defense has some improving to do.
I don't think they're all-world by any stretch of imagination.
But the moment never looked too big with them.
Like he went stride for stride with the best.
the best player in football.
And for them to be able to score 31 points
was super impressive.
Obviously, the late sack hurts.
I felt like this was a major,
major step forward from what we saw last season.
And I think the one thing that separates
this Houston Texan's offense this year
rather than last year, it is David Montgomery.
David Montgomery might just be as important
of anyone on that Houston's Texans offense.
tough yards, three total touchdowns.
So when you have a guy that you can just hand the football off to
and go left and right, whatever you want to do,
can catch it out of the back of which he obviously did for a touchdown,
that run game is able to take that pressure off of C.J. Stroud.
So it's super important.
And then one of my bigger takeaways other than Josh Allen and C.J. Stroud
is what happened to Houston's defense.
This was supposed to be the strength of their team.
Buffalo hung 36 on them.
Not enough pressure whatsoever.
Here's the thing about Houston's defense
and where they've, the one or two issues
are things that they struggle with in the past.
It was, hey, where can we corral these running quarterbacks?
I think that's the hardest thing.
That's where they've struggled with.
Josh Allen obviously using his legs,
extending the plays.
The play to DJ Moore on the right sideline was unbelievable.
I think that was a big deal.
And then most importantly, like explosive plays.
So corraling, running quarterbacks, explosive plays, that's what they struggled with last year.
That's what they struggled with this year.
So I just think if Houston, and this is sort of the pick, right?
This AFC team of the Texans, oh, the defense is good as CJ Strzschild can play as well.
I know it's an L on the sheet.
And I know that, hey, you score 31 points, you feel good.
there's no moral victories in the NFL, that's ridiculous.
But if Houston wants to be a legitimate Super Bowl team,
this is the part of the game that I would be most concerned about.
All right, moving on, Bucks versus the Bengals.
Head coach Zach Taylor, under quite a lot of pressure.
And there's a lot of different reasonings why he was under a lot of pressure.
The main reason being, they haven't made a playoffs in three years.
They have not made the playoff with one of the top five quarterbacks in all of football in Joe Burrell.
and yes, he's been hurt. Yes, I understand that. If the schedule continues to play out like it is,
I mean, this schedule is cake. I think it's a third easiest schedule in all the NFL.
And when you get to a schedule like that, you have to be all in. We know what T. Higgins can do.
We know what Jamar Chase can do. We know what Joe Burrow can do. We know what all these guys can do.
What was the issue last year? It was the defense. The defense was the major issue. They gave up a
ton of points, Joe Burroughs health.
Here's the thing that I love the best.
Like, the Bengals defense, they got three fumbles to start the game.
Four total takeaways.
The Bengals have a defense.
Like, are you kidding me?
Four takeaways and four sacks.
Like I said, Tampa's three early fumbles all turned into Cincinnati's points.
That's where they struggled last year.
They struggled getting takeaways and they struggled taking the football.
all away and then scoring.
Points off of turnovers.
Massive, massive deal there in Sinci.
And we've always spent years, or at least I have,
and you're going to see I'm a very analytical football nerd boys.
Like, when in the world was Cincinnati's defense could compliment Joe Burrow?
They went and they addressed it in free agency.
They addressed it in the draft.
Extra Lawrence coming over.
This team looked different to me in a lot of different ways.
Sinci scored, the other thing while we're still on Sengi,
Sinci scored 33 points.
And there were loles in the game that was just, hey, it's all right, like, whatever.
Where's Jemar Chase?
Like, what are we doing?
Like, I don't think the Bucks defense did anything in particular watching this game for the first time
that did anything to take Jemar Chase away.
It just wasn't, they just weren't finding them.
Like, it was crazy.
Like, it's, Mike Gaseki, obviously.
T. Higgins led the team in rushing. Chase Brown led the team in, or sorry, in receiving,
and Chase Brown led the team in rushing. But where is Jamar Chase? Burrell played well enough.
Here's my thing. You got to score points in the red zone. So the Bucks did defense that
a nice job in the red zone, since he was only two of five in the red zone. Definitely not good
enough. I think we all know Jamar Chase is probably the best receiver in football outside of
Jay Jettis. And for it to reach its ceiling.
He has to be a major part.
Let's get to the Bucks side of things.
I thought they were going to be really good, really fast.
Baker got that massive extension, 55 million, I think, per year.
But Baker, like 23 of 28, 216 yards.
If you're stat watch and it looks good, watch the game.
He played bad.
The turnover's mistakes completely changed the game.
At some point, Baker has to understand when the play is over.
he's out there running, he's fumbling.
They had a massive red zone fumble,
and you can't continually put your team in bad situations
trying to make something out of nothing.
So I do think that they have a really strong offense.
I like what they have done.
Zach Robinson comes over with another Sean McVeigh disciple,
a lot of shifts, a lot of motions, a lot of under-center.
Bucky Irving, excellent.
I would say they have one of the most underrated skill rooms
in all of football.
I think they're going to be fine.
Chris Godwin Jr.
Ameca Abuka.
There's some speedsters out there.
They're going to be fine.
But I also got to give a huge shout out to Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Went to the University of Missouri pick six.
He's like one of the only players in NFL history
in his first debut or start.
I'm going to get this wrong.
I know to have a pick six and a sack in his NFL debut.
So love that.
I thought that was a sneaky good game.
You've heard the chaos.
you can see it.

Self-Care September is here, which means it's time to rethink what self-care actually means.
Yes, self-care can be a long walk. It can be in everything shower.
It can be putting your phone on do not disturb, but sometimes it's actually about sitting with
the uncomfortable stuff and understanding your patterns, your boundaries, finally figuring out while you
keep doing things that you swore you would never do again. I'm Gemma Spegg, the host of the
psychology of your 20s podcast, and each week we unpack the psychology behind the experiences
that shape your 20s, from relationships and friendships to money, anxiety, confidence, attachment,
just becoming more comfortable with who you are.
Unlike the quarter life crisis, which is depicted as the collapse, the quarter life reinvention is the expansion and growth of something.
When we develop the ability to be happy by ourselves, nobody else can take that from you.
So this self-care September, don't just take care of yourself.
Get to know yourself as well.
Listen to the psychology of your 20s on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Honestly, it was back and forth.
All right, let's go to Saints First Lions.
Saints First Lions. Probably, other than maybe the late window, the best game of the day,
probably a lot of people didn't realize it. Lions stormed out to a lead, thought this would be
Dan Campbell's and Jared Goff's year. Amal Ross A. Brown went crazy. Sam Laporta is back.
Jamir Gibbs. I mean, like, if you play fantasy, which I don't, I probably need to get on it.
My bad. I'll take the L on that. They have a fantasy's team dream. It's just, it's unbelievable.
and they started really fast, and they just barely held on, and they're at home.
I wanted to break down this game because I really liked it from the point of view of the Saints.
The Saints are probably the least talked about team.
Look, the NFC South all took Ls this weekend.
All took Ls. They're all O and One.
The NFC South winner might win nine games.
I really like what the Saints have been able to do.
And we'll get into the Carolina Panthers, which was good against,
the Chicago Bears, but what the Saints were able to do in the first half was poor.
It was piss poor, to be honest with you.
Tyler Shuck was rattled and then settled in really nicely, though.
He ends up going over 411 yards, was sacked five times,
offensive line there, a little bit of an issue.
Chris Olavet, Velaide was excellent for them.
Totally forgot Travis Etyn was there.
Alvin Kamara did not play.
when they get those guys back, this is a sneaky good team.
And the main thing I wanted to realize about Tyler Shuck,
he showed me he's the guy.
I would say the last eight to 10 games of his rookie year last year
put some really good film on tape.
Forget the rough stretches early.
What he did, though, this game in the fourth quarter
and overtime mattered more than anything.
You're on the road in a hostile environment.
playing from behind. Think about that mindset growth from a quarterback's perspective.
Responded really well with pressure. That to me is franchise quarterback stuff, truly.
And honestly, there's a lot of talk about, hey, should have Kellyn Moore have gone for two?
Look, this game went into overtime. I love the fact. Like Big Cajonis, Kellan Moore.
I hate the play call. I love the fact that they went for it. They ran a little flat, snag,
corner combo. They take away the flat. They take away the snag. He's having to throw.
the corner route up over top, but it was good. I enjoyed that. It's the first game of the year.
If you can steal one versus the Lions, didn't mind that at all. All right, let's get into the two
afternoon games. We're going to start Packers Vikings. I'm going to be honest, I turned this game
off at one point because the Packers were absolutely boat racing the Vikings. I fully came on here
expecting to talk all about Jordan Love and talk all about everything that I love about
Jordan Love. And we still will do that today. The first three quarters, Jordan Love was amazing.
When you play a team like the Minnesota Vikings and you're playing against defensive coordinator
Brian Flores, he puts so much stress on you offensively because of what we like to call
these AA mug looks or these eight up or these seven up looks. It's pretty much where you have four
down lineman in the center there's two gaps on either side of the center they're called the a gap
and when you can get in the a gap by these backers it's called double a mug so there's six across
well they put eight up a lot it's either blitzin or bailing you have to really focus in on the game
plan at hand and i would say the first three quarters for whatever reason jordan love had brian
flores his number jordan love verse the blitz 11 of 19
220 yards, two touchdowns, no sacks.
So he was outstanding.
They had good answers all game long.
And then in the fourth quarter,
Brian Flores said,
let me show you what I'm really about.
Unbelievable, was able to blitz from so many different types of directions,
so many different types of ways,
and completely stymied them.
I felt like the Packers forgot how to play offense in the fourth quarter.
What else I love about the Packers, though?
Christian Watson.
They lost a lot of their guys.
Christian Watson developing from a one-trick pony,
which is just down the field,
he's only speed to a true number one receiver.
Matt LaFleurr still dials them up.
I mean, they looked excellent,
but it's unforgivable how bad they looked
in the fourth quarter on the road.
And, oh, by the way, the Vikings didn't even have Cali Murray.
But it's also good to see Matthew Golden step up.
I know there was a lot of people last year.
oh, he's going to have a thousand yards receiving from a rookie from Texas,
speedster.
He's coming along really well, had almost 70 yards receiving.
And then I think the storyline of the day, or one of the storylines of the day,
is Kyler Murray, I think, in the first 10, 15 plays, gets knocked out, concussion,
hope he's okay, never know how quarterbacks can come back from that.
He's, I believe, had some concussions in his career.
I thought, and even producer Grant, who's sitting over here,
he thought that J.J. McCarthy was going to come in.
Not so fast.
J.J. McCarthy got silently bumped down to the number three quarterback,
and I know Taylor-Lawans probably crying about it right now,
but shout out Taylor, I mean, Michigan guy.
I thought J.J. was going to go in.
Not so fast.
Not so fast.
Let's get in 2017.
Almost MVP Carson wins.
Dude played unbelievable.
I don't even know.
I don't even know the stats.
I know he had three touchdowns.
Out there, let's see. He was, yeah, 12 and 19, 133 yards, three touchdowns, 123 rating.
Wasn't expecting that. Hand up.
Stephen A. Smith called him out. No one's ever going to call on Carson Wentz.
Remember that like a couple days ago?
Kyler Murray ended up three or five, 18 yards, one pick.
I don't think there's a quarterback competition there.
I think if Kyler's healthy, he's going to be the guy.
But what a way to steal a win versus a division rival in the...
the opening game, the NFC North, is going to be wild Chicago Bears,
obviously won as well.
I think the story of the Vikings, not only is that Carson Wentz played well,
and that's very difficult to do as a backup,
you don't get any reps during the week, by the way.
I just hope you guys understand that and know that.
If you're going through the week, you do not get any reps whatsoever.
You run the scout team.
So for him to be able to do that, just talks about how much of veterans had is this.
But the best thing of the weekend, I saw one of the best things of the weekend, Justin Jefferson.
Eight catches, 92 yards, two touchdowns, nine targets.
He was so underutilized.
Best receiver in football along with Jamar Chase.
He was so underutilized last year.
It was unbelievable to me how underutilized he was.
But to get him going with a backup quarterback, really was the third, Carson was the third string coming in to the season.
They haven't had a lot of games together.
To me, that was awesome to see.
I think they said in the broadcasts,
And don't quote me, Bustin family,
but I'm pretty sure they said in the broadcast
that Justin Jefferson had not had a home receiving touchdown.
Producer Grant, can you check this?
Had not had a producer, or 100, sorry,
had not had a receiving touchdown since 2024.
We'll make sure if that's right enough.
That's wild to me.
That's how bad the quarterback play last year was for the Minnesota Vikings.
Just a horrendous start for them to win with a backup quarterback at home.
This will give them momentum.
going in. And then let's talk about it. That's right. Jeremy Klump. Yeah, so going back,
December, what? Justin Jefferson. Hadn't had a home touchdown since 2024. I was right.
All right. Let's get to the next game. Final game of the A block. Commanders versus Eagles,
that's right. Jeremy Klump, busing with the boys, do it all, chief of staff, producer, biggest
Jaylon Hertz fan you ever had. Ooh, that was a close one, Eagles fans. They ended up winning that
football game and I think the story of that game obviously we're going to talk about
Jaylon Hertz I think the story of that game though was Vic Fangio in that defense that
defense is going to be so good jaden Daniels did not look very good at all stymied by
Vic Fangio's defense here's the thing about Vic Fangio's defense he presents so many different issues
because he plays this too high shell coverage and when you play this too high shell coverage
you have to be okay
taking a profit,
which means taking those easy completions.
In the quarterback room, we'd always say,
hey, don't go broke, taking profit,
which means, hey, let's just fire these pig skins in there,
left and right, and he wasn't doing that.
David Blow looked overmatch.
It was David Blow, who's the offensive coordinator for Jayneill's,
and I'm a big Jayden Nails fan.
I actually said he's going to remind some people
that 2024 wasn't a fluke.
Was hurt last year, all this stuff.
Didn't do well.
numbers don't tell the story on this game.
Sure, they had 295 total yards.
I get that.
But I love what Vic Fangio
has been able to do
with that defense.
And you look at
Zach Bond, too.
I don't know if you guys saw it.
Zach Bonn almost made the craziest interception
I've ever seen on asylum,
but Zach Bond leading the way with 12 tackles.
Let's talk about the Eagles.
Because there was a lot of talk
coming into this year about like there always is.
Nick Siriani and is his job safe,
Howie Roseman, yada, yada, yada, yada, Jalen Hertz,
a lot of discourse.
I would say that I have at times been a little rough on Jalen.
I would say Jalen, to me, played a really good game this year,
like this game, let's give them props.
Here's the thing, too, when you bring in offensive coordinator, Sean Mannion,
Sean McVeigh, Kyle Shanahan Disciple, put him under center, way more, let him go with it,
a lot of play action, a lot of jet sweet motion.
This would be the first year in the offense, in my opinion, and Jalen, and he's had, I don't
even know, Clumple probably know, 18 different offensive coordinators through his career.
He has never been in an offense like this, and he showed every single time that he's had a new
coordinator that he plays really well.
and so I would say that when you look at his game today,
he was under center so much more.
He looked good.
He controlled the offensive line.
He controlled the run game.
Obviously, like Sequan Barkley.
Dallas Goddard and Dantavian Wicks, to me, need to be talked about.
If Dantabian Wicks can continue to have 73 yards receiving,
he had a long of 64 on only four targets.
That's a 36 and a half yard average.
Goddard down the seam, you know, they were doing,
they were playing a lot of too high shell look.
Talking about Goddard in the middle of the field,
I do believe it's really, really good to have a blanket of protection there
with Dallas Goddard.
Here's the thing.
I want to see my Kai Leman get going.
I want to see McKay Leman step up.
I want to see McKay Leman continue his progress.
but really with Jalen Hertz to me, I was impressed.
I got to say I was impressed.
But yeah, so that to me, those are the games that we're going to get to.
We are going to get to the quarterback room next.
You've heard the chaos.

Okay, well, control is a harsh word.
I would say that's a harsh word.
I am more outspoken.
Growing up a lot of the times because she was so quiet.
I would speak for like the both of us.
Now I'm working on like thinking a moment, really not controlling it.
Not controlling her.
And Joey King.
You know if you're like mom is yelling at your sibling and even if you're annoyed with your
sibling, you just like won't let that slide.
It's like only you can yell at your sibling.
I'm like, you can't do that here.
That is.
You want to talk about her like that.
Oh, I talk about her like that.
Plus, we've been taking your calls,

Selfcare September is here, which means it's time to rethink what self-care actually means.
Yes, self-care can be a long walk.
It can be in everything shower.
It can be putting your phone on Do Not Disturb.
But sometimes it's actually about sitting with the uncomfortable stuff.
And understanding your patterns, your boundaries, finally figuring out while you keep doing things that you swore you would never do again.
I'm Gemma Spag, the host of the Psychologist.
of your 20s podcast, and each week we unpack the psychology behind the experiences that
shape your 20s, from relationships and friendships to money, anxiety, confidence, attachment,
just becoming more comfortable with who you are. Unlike the quarter life crisis, which is
depicted as the collapse, the quarter life reinvention is the expansion and growth of something.
When we develop the ability to be happy by ourselves, nobody else can take that from you.
So this self-care September, don't just take care of yourself. Get to know your
as well. Listen to the psychology of your 20s on the IHartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever

shopping for team gear, protect your pocket with Visa. Tapping to pay for a bootleg jersey without
checking the card, not a pro move. Tapping to pay with Visa, that's a pro move. Visa runs more
than 500 security checks to help identify fraud before transactions are approved, helping protect

move because with Visa, you're not responsible for any charges you didn't make. So you can save
your defensive energy for something else, like keeping Taylor away from your nachos. This season,
defensive play is paying with Visa, the most trusted way to pay for football fans everywhere.
All right, guys, welcome back into the first read. That was the games that mattered most.
Now we are in what I like to call the quarterback room. We'll come into the quarterback meeting
room. We are going to break down quarterbacks. Games tell us what's happening. Maybe we'll do
stock up, stock. I don't know. I'm just going to throw stuff left and right. And we have to. We have to
start with one of my favorite quarterbacks that I've broken down, and I think he's lived up to the height.
That's right. That's Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears. Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears
put up, I believe, 59 points. 59 points versus the Panthers. That is unbelievable.
Ben Johnson, Caleb Williams, in year two of that offense.
I mean, that was unbelievable.
And what a showdown it was between Bryce Young.
Because I thought Bryce Young, I mean, when you score 37, you think you're supposed to win.
Not so fast, says Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson.
So much to break down about Caleb Williams.
The first one has nothing to do with Caleb Williams,
but Caleb Williams is a direct recipient of this, and it is the run game.
I forgot how good and how creative of a run game that Ben Johnson has.
They are using multiple personnel groupings.
They are using multiple formations.
They are using formation to the boundary, which means you put everything like a bunch
or a quads or whatever into that area.
And they are just confusing the hell out of defenses.
And they had this last year.
They really did, but to see it on paper, to see two Chicago Bears players, Calamungi
and Dianjave Swift have a total of 28 carries for 224 yards between them, both 100-yard rushers, mind you,
and four rushing touchdowns.
The Bears had six, six rushing touchdowns.
Come on now.
There's teams out there that haven't had six rushing touchdowns
in the first six weeks of the season before.
So that is where this offense starts.
So I am extremely excited about it.
Oh, by the way, Caleb Williams, who we're talking about right now,
10 carry 65 yards, two touchdowns as well,
to go with 21 of 29, 269, and two touchdowns.
If I was giving out helmet sickers like college,
this is the guy who gets it.
This is the guy who gets all of it.
So because they're able to run the football under center out of multiple different personnel groupings, like I was mentioning, it allows for Caleb Williams to be under center.
And when he drops back, to be able to see all these different guys, but to be able to have the time and to escape, like we always know that he does this.
And we've always said, hey, he's a home run hitter.
Right.
He always likes to take these shots.
He's always wanted to do this.
He's always wanted to do that.
And, you know, a lot was made of his completion percentage.
Guess what it was today?
Go ahead, guess. 72.4%.
I don't even think he completed 60% last year.
So much more effective in the air.
He wasn't just trying to take home runs down the field.
More importantly, Caleb Williams is still Houdini.
Like, I tweeted that out.
Like, he's able to move around in the pocket.
Like, no one else's business.
There was a play.
A touchdown throw.
He's rolling to his right, throws back across his body.
to his left.
And I just don't know
this is not being hyperbolic whatsoever.
I don't know how many other people
in the world can make that throw.
It's not like it was wide open.
It was completely covered.
And that's great.
You know what else is great?
Roma Dunzei.
You know what else is great?
Luther Burden.
You know what else is great?
All these weapons,
that they have, most importantly, I think, one of the best tight-ins in the entire game.
Young tight-ins.
Colson Loveland, zero catches, zero yards, zero touchdowns, only two targets.
He wasn't even a big part of their plan.
Like, are you kidding me?
Khalif Raymond, their slot receiver led their team in catches, targets, and receptions.
Luther Burden is going to have a breakout year.
would I dare say
Jeremy Clump, producer,
that the Chicago Bears
are better off without
DJ Moore? Sometimes, let me just
break this down. Sometimes when you're a
quarterback and you have a bona fide number
one receiver, you want to get
on the ball. Sometimes you force him the ball.
Not the biggest fan of DJ Moore's
attitude outbursts and sometimes lack of hustle,
although he was amazing for Buffalo. So Buffalo's got
got himself a guy.
But now the
the ball can go to so many different people,
and it just makes the offense more scary.
But the Colson-11 thing,
he wasn't even involved.
Totally fine.
You got to get him involved, though.
You got to get them in the slot versus linebackers,
tight-ins, all these things.
I mean, the Bears had 552 total yards of offense.
Comette, Cole Commet, was the one I was talking about,
that one that I don't think that many people in the world
can make that throw.
And I would just say, final thought on Caleb Williams, he was electric today.
He's playing out of his mind, more importantly, to break down what Carolina was doing.
There's such thing called a mush rush.
What the hell is a mush rush?
A mush rush is where defensive linemen for Carolina, they don't rush past the quarterback.
They rush to the quarterback.
That's exactly what they were doing.
And why were they doing that?
Well, because they were worried about Caleb Williams' creativity and escapeability.
When you do that, though, you open up yourself to not getting to the quarterback, not sacking the quarterback, not doing all these things.
And then if you do break contain on a mush rush, good luck.
65 yards rushing because of it.
Carolina did not change their plan.
It gave him all day in the pocket, and he was able to pick them apart.
Another helmet sicker game ball, whatever we're doing, flash it up, something like that.
Caleb Williams stock way the hell up way up like best second best quarterback third best
quarterback performance of the week behind Josh Allen Brock Party all right let's get to stock way
way down you guys know what I'm going to say Deshawn Watson what are we doing what are we doing
multiple times that the ball should have been taken away multiple times
that I just felt embarrassed a little bit for Deshaun Watson.
There's a lot of talk out there between Deshaun Wadsden,
Shador Sanders, all this stuff.
Deshawn Watson got booed at home.
You don't think that he's going to get booed at home their next home game even more?
I mean, the time is now for Shador Sanders.
I thought for sure that Deshaun Watson was not going to make it out through the first half.
The numbers look way better.
than they should.
16 of 22,
205 yards,
one touchdown,
one interception,
took five sacks.
The five sacks,
the interception,
he fumbled,
one, didn't lose it.
I don't know,
I don't know what you want me to say.
Browns,
you knew this was going to happen.
You started the game
with an interception.
Browns had a grand total
of 95 yards in the first half.
saying that Shador Sanders is going to be some savior, but I really do like the core pieces in
Cleveland, Casey Concepcion, Denzel Boston. Those were the two leading receivers. Both those guys are
rookies. You got Quinshawn Juckins. Deshawn Watson, for whatever reason, led the team in rushing.
Get the run game going. Get Todd Munkin under center. Now, here's the thing, too, about Todd Munkin.
I believe Chodore Sanders fits Todd Munkin's offense way better than Deshawn Watson does.
It's spread it out.
It's 11 personnel.
It's let them cook.
It's exactly what it did at Colorado.
Harold Fannin Jr.
I mean, they have a very, very good core.
I'm defensively got to figure it out.
Trevor Lawrence, I mean, looked all world.
We're not breaking them down today.
Maybe next time.
I'm not saying the Browns can be a competitor.
but with the right quarterback, I think they could make a lot of noise.
Here's what I will say before we get on to the next quarterback is the Browns have two first round picks next year.
I do not believe that the quarterback on their roster right now is currently with the team.
I think they're going to pick somebody in this draft, build around him, we shall see.
I said I wasn't going to break down Trevor Lawrence.
I'm lying.
I'm lying.
I couldn't help myself because Trevor Lawrence's performance.
versus the Cleveland Browns, and Cleveland Browns
have a good defense. I get it. It's not great.
Trader way, Miles Garrett. But Liam Cohn
and Trevor Lawrence
looked dynamite
from the start. They've been doing so
much cool stuff on offense. Different
personnel groupies, putting them under center.
Very efficient day.
Here's what I love. Only threw the ball 23 times.
They ran the ball,
32, tried to play keep-away, but he was 18
to 23, 245 yards.
Four touchdowns
through the air. Just no big
deal, zero interceptions, only took one sack, QBR, almost perfect.
You can't throw it any better.
Parker, Washington, Jacoby Myers, Brian Thomas Jr., spread it around to, I don't know,
looks like five, like nine different receivers.
That's what this Liam Cohen offense is.
That's where they gain their advantage.
Trevor Lawrence, it is time for, I'm so sick and tired of talking about Trevor Lawrence,
taking the net set.
Thought he played well last year.
Liam Cohn, year two, it's time to go.
And look, you're playing in the A,
50 South, Texans lost, Colts lost.
You guys got a shot to make some really, really sneaky moves this year.
Let's see what you got.
And now, I love this so much.
Lamar Jackson, holy cow.
Lamar Jackson looked like himself.
He looked like himself of old.
Just absolutely disrupted the,
the Colts.
Scored 41 points.
The offense was dominant.
It wasn't only Lamar Jackson.
It was Derek Henry as well.
Everything in between Lamar Jackson, 17 to 25, 324 yards, one touchdown, and ran for
another touchdown.
Seven carries for 40 yards.
Zay Flowers, too.
When you've got a guy like that, next level.
Derek Henry, 144 yards, three touchdowns.
He is denying father time.
still looks dominant as I'll get out.
And here's the thing.
The Ravens had 10 penalties and still some drops
and still put up 41 on the road.
Jesse Mentor, massive changes.
Massive year for Lamar Jackson, right?
Bring in offensive coordinator Declan Doyle.
Awesome job.
Excited to see it.
Ravens this year might be scary.
I'm just saying, might be scary.
All right, let's move on.
C Block, here we go.
What we learned, the looking
forward point, which means the biggest
storylines coming out of week
one, heading in
to week two. Are NFL
offenses making adjustments
to recent defensive trends that have
had offenses struggling?
I don't know what the average
points per game was, but I do know, I think
I heard on CBS, it was
teams average 51 points.
What in the world is happening?
Usually, think about it, from
a training camp perspective, because the
defense always has less plays to
put in, they are usually, they usually start way faster than any offense does.
When you're able to start fast on offense, it's because, hey, you've got good playmakers and all
this stuff.
Defense has looked overwhelmed.
We have been talking about this trend recently of so many different defenses playing in this
too high safety look, right?
It's, it's all what anyone talks about.
They're light in the box, which means you only have six defenders in the box, your nickels
out, you have two high safeties.
Can teams run the ball?
Well, guess what?
Teams are getting in heavy personnel groups.
22 personnel, two backs, two tight ends, 13 personnel, one back, three tight ends.
21 personnel, two backs, one tight ends.
It's almost like father times coming back and saying, hey, we're going to run the football
until you get out of those two high safety looks.
And when you get out of those two high safety looks, once you rotate down on either side,
we are going to take a shot down the field and teams are hitting it.
I love what I'm seeing.
Offenses fighting back versus the defenses.
So I do think this is a trend that's going to continue happening.
Let's see.
the next storyline to me
I don't want to overreact
but I'm going to overreact
are the Rams in trouble
that Melbourne game
or Melbourne as they call it
was
was wild getting throttled in an Australian
I don't want to hear all your excuses
about oh the Rams traveled 28 hours before
and the 49ers were traveled
you know 10 days before or whatever it was
it was an old-fashioned buttwhip and it was an out-coaching
the Rams have all
sorry, the 49ers have always had Calh-Shannahan's number.
Like, or sorry, the 49ers have always had Sean McVeigh's number.
I say always.
They play them really well.
No one was expecting the 49ers to throttle the rins like that, except me.
I called it.
Look at my Twitter.
I'm just going to say, I said it.
I said it'd be a close game.
Here's even more of a damning issue is that Aaron Donald, didn't travel, didn't play,
probably not playing this week.
Miles Garrett
Huge, huge, huge, huge
signing trade
I are. I could not
believe it when Adam Schaefter
tweeted that. Miles Garrett, knee surgery.
Matthew Stafford didn't look like himself.
I think they're going to be
okay. This defensive
line thing that everyone's like, oh my gosh,
how are they going to handle it? Now they're without
two potential. No, not two
potential. Two first ballot Hall of Famers.
Got to settle in offensively.
got to get into a rhythm. I think Stafford will get used to it. He's getting older, but he's
going to get to it. I don't want to say they're in trouble. It's one game in, but I'm overreacting
there in trouble. The last thing, and this will be quick, we're going to keep this going throughout
the year. New OCs and new places. Let's start with a couple offensive coordinators and how they
fare today in new places. Eagles and Sean Manning, we already talked about it a little bit.
If they can keep this up, I know Clumps is smiling from here to hear. If they can keep this up,
him under center, Jalen Hertz under center, get that run game going, that offensive line,
still one of the best in the game, in my opinion. I think they're going to have a lot of success.
You have different motions, you have different jet sweeps, you have different jet
motion. It's just, it's a lot. And I think if Jalen Hertz can get more comfortable
under center, they're going to be trending up new OCs and new places. Here's one we haven't
talked about. Arizona Cardinals beat down the Los Angeles Chargers out.
home in Los Angeles, but how about the Chargers is Mike McDaniel?
It looked pretty, pretty bad today. The Chargers end up losing and only scoring 14 points.
They lose to Jacobi Percette. Jacoby Percette outplayed Justin Herbert at home. Cardinals 26,
Chargers 14. Herbert 17 and 27, 209 yards, one touchdown. The biggest issue I saw was the Cardinals
did not let that run game get going. When Mike Daniel signed with Harbaugh, we were like,
Oh, he's going to run the ball, left and right.
He's going to do all these things.
He's going to do all this stuff.
21 carries 81 yards.
What are we doing?
Lab Mconki got hurt.
Great game five catches 82 yards.
A touchdown.
Hope he's okay.
Not quite the start for Mike McDaniel that he wanted.
We talked about the Ravens and Declan Doyle.
I just, I love it.
It allows Lamar Jackson to play under center on time.
So many different cool things that they were doing,
different formations, putting different pieces in different places.
Think about old, like, Ben Johnson-style offense.
You see how the Ravens were able to run the football?
Well, guess where the Bears ran over 250 yards today.
It came from that tree of things.
A little bit of Sean Peyton in him, Joe Lombardi,
who is with Sean Payton is now in the booth with him.
There's a lot of fun stuff trending up for sure.
And the last but not least,
Bill's in Pete Carmichael.
We talked about it,
but I think Josh Allen is going to really enjoy Pete Carmichael there.
They're going to bring some under-center
play action shot plays down the field that Josh Allen hasn't brought to.
So really looking forward to that today.
