Busy, Yet Pretty - Depression Can’t Hit A Moving Target: Showing Up For Yourself, New Healthy Habits & Consistency
Episode Date: February 23, 2026I'm back—and this one is close to my heart. In this episode, I'm talking about something so many of us face: depression, low motivation, and feeling completely stuck. My favorite quote, 'De...pression can't hit a moving target,' frames everything I share here — practical, habit-based strategies for showing up for yourself even on the days you really don't want to. I also bring back the fan-favorite weekly review, my current obsessions, goals of the week, a listener affirmation, and a self-love journaling prompt.Affirmation of the Week:✨I can restart my life at any time.✨Self-Love Question of the Week:How can I show up for myself when I feel like my back is against the wall?Connect & Support the ShowLeave a review on Apple Podcasts to be featured in a future episodeRate the show on SpotifyShare this episode to your Instagram or TikTok Stories and tag me!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Hello, my love, welcome to the Busy at Pretty Podcast. I'm your host, Jane and Haley. I actually cannot
believe I'm saying this, but this is not an in fact pre-recorded episode. For the past few weeks,
I've had episodes that are from the past and pre-uploaded just because the past few months I've been
going through a lot of health issues, but I'm proud to say I'm feeling so much better than I did,
and I am back. I honestly can't believe I'm actually back on the podcast, and we're going to be
uploading routinely and I'm just so excited. While I was healing with my health, I just did so much
planning on things I want to incorporate into the show. I can't lie, there's so many wonderful
things to come with the podcast, so I'm so excited. But if you're new here, welcome. I am Jaden
Haley. I'm the host of Busy at Pretty and on this show we talk all about how to become the
best version of you, live your dream life, and honestly, just learn how to love yourself, romanticize your
life because it's about enjoying your life and it's important to do those things to make us feel good.
I know many of you guys have missed the weekly review, the current obsessions, and I'm proud to say
we're back. So let's get into our weekly review. This week, I have just been catching up on
life and getting organized. I feel like sometimes you can be in a slump or just be off track
on your routine and it's just nice to have one of those weeks and weekends that kind of just reset everything
and get you back on track, especially at the start of the new year.
We set all our goals and we get all productive.
And then by February, we're just like in a slump or we just forgot our goals and our habits.
And we want to get back to that.
We want to get back to the state that we had January 1st when we started our goals.
So just trying to get back on the mindset and getting organized.
Another thing this week is I have just been planning ahead for spring.
I am so excited for spring.
My birthday is actually March 17th.
So I'm trying to plan a little fun girls.
spring birthday party.
I feel like it'll be really cute, like crafts and tea and just a full dream for a girl.
So I think I'm going to do that for my birthday.
But other than that, I have just been trying to make my little like online Pinterest mood board for spring.
It just gets me excited and motivated for the new season.
And I love the rain, but I'm honestly ready for just the sun and to be able to go outside without it being cold.
Really just trying to embrace the new season that's coming.
Now into my current obsessions.
My current obsession at the moment is tinned fish.
I have loved tinned fish all my life, but especially right now, I'm in such a big sardines
cake with lemon.
Oh my gosh, if you have not tried any tinned fish lately, please do.
It's so good alone, but if you don't like to eat it alone, try adding some avocado,
lemon, and just like pepper, salt.
It will literally just elevate it and taste so good.
And I love mine over a Japanese sweet potato or a purple sweet potato.
It truly just tastes absolutely amazing.
And you need to try it for your next lunch or breakfast because honestly it's been my breakfast
obsession and fixation lately as well.
Another thing that I am obsessed with this week is solo hobbies.
Last week I took myself on a date, a solo date.
I did a little pottery painting session and it was so fun.
I painted the cutest little birthday plate and I posted a video on it. I'm literally obsessed. Also,
if you can't find cute plates or cute dishes, go to a pottery painting place and paint it yourself
because you can literally paint the cutest dishes ever that you can't buy at the store.
But I did that and then I took myself to see at Wuthering Heights, which has also taken up my entire brain space the past week since I've seen it.
Wuthering Heights is such a good movie and I'm honestly very tempted to read the book.
I know a lot of people who read the book hate the movie but I'm really interested in reading the book
now. My other current obsession right now is Pilates wrapped tops. I love nothing more than a Pilates
outfit during the day as a little OOTD but I love nothing more actually than those wrap tops
that like wrap around a few times on your waist and they're just so cute. They're the perfect like
spring time wrap and it's the perfect springtime like little sweater. I just have been obsessed with
them. Now to my goal of the week. My current goal of the week right now is to lift a little heavier weights.
I love nothing more right now than walking on my walking pad and doing some little light weights with my pink
weights that I have. I usually try to do five pound weights to 10 pound weights, but I'd love to do a little 15 pound weight soon.
Another goal will be great now for me is to start a new book.
I, two books now in a row.
I've started them.
I love them.
But I just can't get through them.
Why?
I don't know.
And it's not the book at all.
It's my fault.
I think it's the part of like I get so tired in the evening and I forget to like space out time
and schedule out the time to actually read.
So then when I get in bed, I just want to go to sleep.
I'm just so tired from the day.
But the two books that I didn't finish, which I'm sorry.
so frustrated about is the seven year slip. I started it. It was so good. I didn't finish it. So I'm like,
I'm just going to let that go. And then I started a Christmas book. And I'm literally still trying to get
through the Christmas book just so I can check it off. And now I'm not attached to the book since it's
about Christmas. And that's months ago. So honestly, I think I'm just going to start fresh on a new book
and a new spring book. But I'm tempted to read Picking Daisies on Sundays. I've heard that's a really good book.
But I think it's time to let go because sometimes in the spring especially, you have to let go in order to bring in the new.
And my last little goal of the week right now is to dive deeper into yoga, just more intentional and less rushed.
I feel like sometimes I try to do some yoga and then I'm like, you know what, I'm doing yoga.
I'm in my outfit.
Let me just go work out.
But I'd love to actually take things slow and try doing some yoga.
It's more of I have to actually just try learning some yoga poses.
also with my hyper-mobile part of myself for my HEDS.
I'm not really able to do too much yoga with my flexibility that I have.
So I try to just do it cautiously.
But anyways, I would love to try to learn more yoga poses and just try to be more intentional about doing that.
Now to the affirmation of the week.
I can restart my life at any time.
I love that affirmation because it is so true at any point in our life, how bad, how over
overwhelming it feels we truly can restart our life at any time and even if you think well i can't
get a new job overnight or i can't redo my room overnight there are things you can do that can
reset your life in your own mind and that's changing your mindset reset your mindset and when you
reset your mindset you can literally reset other things in your life it's almost like a domino effect
when your mindset is right and on track, it can literally help so much.
And one thing after another in your life starts adding up, it starts working out.
So I just love that affirmation.
Now onto the self-love question of the week.
How can I show up for myself when I feel like my back is against the wall?
I love that so much because it's so important to see what is supporting yourself
look like to you.
And it's important to kind of just understand that safety net that you'd put up for
yourself when you do feel like your back is against the wall.
Now on to the podcast review.
This review is from Sophia and Sophia said,
I always feel so much lighter and much happier
after listening to your podcast.
You really helped me focus on the present.
You were so motivating.
X-O-XO-XO Sophia.
Sophia's thank you so much and I am just so glad to hear that.
I love to hear how just the podcast makes you feel
and that's my intention is making you guys feel motivated and excited
because honestly we're all living through life

it is time to get into today's episode. This episode is on Depression Can't Hit a Moving Target.
that is one of my favorite quotes and it is one of the truest quotes and i feel like this resonates
with everyone depression anxiety and also just feeling unmotivated and sad and the fact of the matter is
when you stay still and stay in your wallowing and stay in how you feel when you're feeling
unmotivated sad and unwell you're going to feel more and more of that because the minute you start
getting up and changing things it truly can make a drastic difference
And this isn't to say that your depression or your anxiety or your sadness or on motivation will go away if you do these things.
I am not saying that whatsoever.
And this does not replace therapy.
This does not replace medication.
This does not replace so much that things can actually help.
But by getting up and moving, that can be one of the biggest differences and biggest impacts on your life.
First up, let me say you need to start showing up for yourself.
And this is to say showing up for yourself looks different on everybody.
Showing up for somebody may be getting your nails done, doing self-care, watching your favorite show,
resting, taking time to read, taking time to rest, and just catch up on sleep.
And showing up for yourself can be the complete opposite for somebody else.
That may be getting up, stop watching TV, go work out, get some sunshine, and begin working harder.
So try to figure out what does showing up for yourself look like for you?
because again, you cannot compare it to your friend, your family member, me, anybody.
You can't compare what showing up looks like to anybody because all our wants and all our needs
are different.
So where are you trying to compare what your friend is doing to what you're doing?
It's not going to work.
So you can either sit down with a pen and paper or just think to yourself, what do you
really need in life?
And this is going to be something that's also uncomfortable because let me just tell you
when I'm in a slump and I'm not doing well and I'm in bed and I'm in bed and I'm
I'm just not working out and I'm just kind of just watching TV and not doing my regular task that I know are going to help me.
I know when I think about it, if I were to get up and I were to work out and if I were to go eat healthy and I were to actually stop scrolling on my phone, I'm 100% going to feel better.
I know I will feel better because I've done it before and I'll do it again.
I know I will, but the thing is I don't want to.
It's the fact that we don't want to.
no matter what, the hardest thing is that we just don't want to.
We don't want to take the step to get up and change our current state, change our habits,
change our life.
We don't want to because what we're doing right now is comfortable.
Even though it's maybe making us sad and depressed, it's comfortable.
So we don't want to change.
But let me just remind you that's human nature.
We're all going to feel some sort of wall between what we know we need to be doing versus what we're currently doing.
you may be scrolling too much on your phone, laying on the couch too much, and feeling just groggy and
bummed and sad, and you know deep down, you know if you were getting outside and actually taking
action on what you want and your goals, you're going to feel better. But again, we don't want
to get up and do it. So the hardest part is coming to terms with, you have to do it. Sometimes we can't
even get our mind to that point. It's something that actually Mel Robbins said that I thought was good.
I think it's called the 3-2-1 rule or something where you're in bed,
You don't want to get out of bed.
And sometimes we have to physically do it before we can mentally accept it.
So it's like three to one and your body just springs out of bed.
And then your mind just has to accept, okay, now I'm up.
So if it takes you complaining the whole time in your head and thinking, gosh, I don't want to be doing this,
I don't want to be going to the gym, I don't want to be getting out of bed,
even if it takes you saying that over and over in your head all day long,
as long as you got up and did it and showed up for yourself, that's all that matters.
and I promise you the first time you do it, the second time will be easier, the third time will be
easier, and the fourth time, it'll soon become a habit.
And not only just a habit, you're going to start seeing results.
You're going to be like, you know, I do feel a little better.
You know what?
I am feeling more confident.
I am feeling more excited to wake up in the morning.
And seeing those results and feeling those feelings of being excited are going to make you
want to get up in the morning and do it.
It's no longer going to be a chore.
It's going to be something you look forward to because you know how it makes
you feel. And again, when I said showing up for yourself looks different on everyone, I mean that
on all ends of the spectrum as well, because if you think somebody else showing up for themselves
may be getting up and running five miles and getting their nails done and watching their favorite
show when they get home. But for you, it may be getting up and taking a shower and brushing your
teeth. Maybe that's showing up for yourself. Don't measure how much or how little you're doing
as long as you're doing something, that's all that matters.
I briefly spoke about this before in episodes, but I have OCD and ADHD, and something that
I've had all my life is just that all or nothing mindset.
And I'm not the only one.
The all or nothing mindset comes to majority of people, not majority, but a lot of people,
and it can also be one of the most detrimental things for a lot of people, because it's either
you're going to be all successful one day or all in a ditch the next day.
but it doesn't have to be the most detrimental thing to you.
As long as you know how to work with the all or nothing mindset and remove that from your life
or work with it and know how to balance it outright, that's all that matters.
Instead of writing down how many miles I did today or what meals I ate today that are going to nourish my body
or how much cleaning I did today or how much work I got done today.
Instead of measuring how much, I'm not measuring how much.
As long as I did one part of it and did something about it, that's all that.
that matters. So I bought a calendar that I have in my wall and every single day I show up for myself
and do something. I'm not saying how much I did or how little I did. As long as I did something,
I put a star. And let me just tell you, every day I'm going to do something, whether it's at least I'm
walking a little bit or I'm eating a little healthy or I'm getting some work done. I'm not saying how
much I'm doing, but at least I do a little bit, I'm putting a star on my calendar. So now, all year so far,
I've had a star every single day.
And that just is for showing up for myself.
As long as I show up for myself, I get to put a little star and it makes me excited.
That may be something that helps you not measure how much you're doing, but whether are you
showing up for yourself or not.
And that's where I also place into consistency.
Stop thinking to yourself.
I sometimes show up for myself.
Or I'm trying to get better at staying consistent.
Change your identity of how you think about yourself.
Stop being in a different mindset than the person you want to be.
If you want to be someone who shows up and is consistent every day, then act like that person,
even if you're not, act like her.
Start saying to yourself, I am consistent.
I do show up for myself.
Don't believe a mindset of something that you don't want to be.
If you keep telling yourself you're ugly in the mirror every day, you're always going to feel
ugly and you're never going to feel confident and you're never going to do things that are
going to make you feel confident.
But if you tell yourself, even if you feel ugly inside, I'm so pretty, I'm so beautiful,
I love myself.
Let me remind you, you're going to start feeling that way.
You have to begin treating yourself as the person you want to be.
So stop living in a different identity of I'm so unorganized.
I can never stay consistent.
Start saying I am consistent.
I am organized.
And I always show up for myself.
Next up when it comes to showing up for yourself,
you have to start following your habits and your goals, not your mood.
Like I said earlier, you're not going to feel like waking up every day and doing your routine.
You're not. We're not made to always want to do something that takes effort because we easily want to take the easy way out. We all do. I do. We all do. That's why it's so important to follow our goals and our intentions, not our mood. So start planning ahead and thinking, okay, for my next day, you don't have to plan a week ahead unless that is helpful to you. But start planning the night before on what you want your next day to look like. So then when you wake up in the morning, you know all your goals, what you want to do and how to achieve them.
So you're setting yourself up for success the day before.
It's almost like your night routine begins with your morning routine.
In order to have a successful morning and a successful day, you have to start with your
night routine.
So start planning ahead, start thinking, okay, this is when I want to get done tomorrow.
This is my top three goals.
I want to achieve this, this and this.
And for my personal goals, I want to do this.
And having it all laid out in your Google calendar or your planner is going to make it so
much easier to follow and not wake up in the morning and think, oh my gosh, I have so much
on my mind. I don't know what to start doing. I just have, I have so much to do. Where do I even
start? Try to make it easier for yourself. You have to do procrastination before the problem. And I do
want to give one more disclaimer on the title of depression can't hit a moving target. Of course,
this does not replace therapy or medical support. And especially if you're deeply struggling,
it is so important to seek medical attention and professional help. But of course, but of
course these are just really good healthy habits and foundational tools that you can add into
your lifestyle that can drastically help. Now when it comes to habits, habits are so important when
trying to change your mindset and get out of this slump, get out of this mindset and get up and
move. Like I said earlier, find out what you need in your life. You know deep down, even if you
don't want to do it, you know what's going to help you and you know what you need. And also,
a lot of these habits can be trial and error. You may find something really helps and you
may find something really doesn't. So you can trial and error, see what works, see what doesn't,
and you can always switch around whatever you'd like in your routine because, again, it's your
routine and it's not going to look like somebody else. We have to tailor it to what we need and what
we want because that's going to be how we feel successful and that's going to be how we feel our
best in our life. When it comes to implementing new habits into your routine and lifestyle,
it is very important that you don't try to throw a million things at once because if you
you're not going to be consistent. You have to do a few things at a time or even one thing at a time
or it's going to feel too much too overwhelming. And let's be real, we can't just add on 10 different
habits or 10 different new things into our routine or we're going to, one, forget them. Two, we're not
going to stay consistent. And three, it takes a lot of work and effort to even just do one healthy
habit sometimes. Imagine doing 10 at once. What's going to make you want to change your life?
Not a new routine with 10 new habits.
So pick three main habits that you want to stick to.
That could be, okay, making a nourishing healthy meal for you every single day or for all
your meals even.
You could think, okay, number one is I want to start eating healthier.
I want to start having things that are going to nourish and heal my body.
So that can be one habit.
Number two, maybe getting some movement, going outside, taking a walk.
Even something such as a 10-minute walk can be the perfect healthy habit to add in to
your day. Another perfect habit is maybe you want to add in a 10 minute little reset in your room
every day where before bed you just clean up for 10 minutes in your room, put everything away
because imagine waking up and sitting your messy room or your messy desk. That alone,
having a messy environment is going to make you feel more bogged down and not feeling ready
and motivated for the day. It takes a clean and healthy environment to feel healthy and clean.
So clear your desk off, clear everything off, make it organized, make it tidy.
Again, we're setting yourself up for success.
So do the things that you need to do to clean up and almost restart in order to have a successful next day.
If you have been around for a while, you know the story with my podcast where I almost didn't start it,

Another habit is setting the time that you want to wake up and go to bed at. That is something that is kind of hard for
everybody. Whether you're trying to wake up earlier or you're going to sleep earlier, just trying to
have a better sleep schedule can be very hard itself. So maybe that's one of your goals. Maybe adding more
protein in at breakfast, taking five minutes to read before bed, drinking more water, taking
yourself on a solo date. Those are all just simple little habits that you can incorporate into your
routine into your life that will make such a difference in your every day. Another thing you can do
is habit stacking. So if you have a few habits, you can sometimes stack them together. So maybe you want to
stop listening to so much music and you want to start listening to more podcasts or something that's
beneficial. So maybe let's say one of your goals is that. And then another goal is to start walking more.
So you can listen to your podcast and walk. So that's like habit stacking. Maybe let's say you want to
start cleaning your room and watching a show. That can be you putting on your show and cleaning
your room at the same time. One more example of habit stacking is maybe you want to stop having
coffee on an empty stomach. And another one of your habits is to start eating a high protein breakfast.
you can drink your coffee while eating your high protein breakfast.
When it comes to your goals and daily habits, stop setting it to be such high goals.
Let me remind you, you only have 12 hours or so in the day.
Be kind to yourself.
Things arise where we can't get everything done.
You can't be someone who has never ran in your life and then wake up and think,
today I'm going to run five miles.
Maybe start with one mile.
Take baby steps if you need to because that also will make you realize, wow, this
is a lot easier than going from all or nothing.
You can't expect yourself from going to zero to 100 overnight.
If you do that, you're going to lead yourself to failure and you're going to lead yourself to
being not consistent.
I have a hard time sometimes starting new healthy habits or starting a change in my life.
I find it to be not even like I'm fearing the consistency aspect of it, but just fearing that,
okay, I have to change this.
And now I'm just worried that I'm not going to be able to.
carry this out as I imagine myself I can. And that's okay. It's okay to have doubt in ourselves.
But the best thing we can do is prove ourselves wrong. Sometimes you have to not think one year ahead and you
have to think just one day ahead. You can think, okay, next year I want to have the most fit body.
But let's be real. We don't know what's going to happen next year. Many things can happen between then.
And don't try to think, oh my gosh, in one year I'm going to have a fit body. But then you think,
oh my gosh how am I going to actually work out and eat healthy and be consistent for a full year
and then that starts to scare you then you revert back to your old ways you have to take it one day
at a time and thinking okay today I'm showing up for myself today I'm going to go to the gym today I'm
going to eat healthy and that let alone is some progress that's almost how it is done when you're
recovering from certain addictions they'll usually say to you take one day at a time you don't
have to be sober your whole life but you're going to be sober today
And that makes it easier and easier to think, okay, today is what I need to focus on.
I need to focus on getting through today, going through with this healthy habit today.
And then every day you do that and just thinking going by day, by day, by day, it becomes easier.
It becomes a no-brainer.
It just is ingrained in your routine and your lifestyle.
And it becomes something you look forward to.
Things that feel hard now will not be hard in a few months.
I promise you.
But something that really helps me when getting onto new healthy habits or routines,
Like I said, sometimes it's hard for me.
I hadn't worked out in a few months.
It's been a few months since I have worked out at all because I had a lot of health issues
going on, like I said.
And something I was worried about is, okay, how am I going to approach working out?
Because I am someone who hates working out.
I literally hate it.
I don't like it.
But let me just tell you, I have learned to love it.
I never thought I'd even be saying that, but I actually love it now.
And it's something tied to aesthetic.
I realize the more and more I have a challenge between me and something.
Maybe it's me in working out, me and eating healthy, me and staying organized.
I have to find an aesthetic to make it romanticize in order for me to do the habit.
That's just how it works for me and I find it really helpful and it may work for you.
But when I find something hard, so for me, working out is hard.
So I've been really trying to dive into a lot of cute Pilates like videos and diving into Pinterest and thinking,
Okay, look how cute the Pilate style is, the yoga girl Zen 2000 chic aesthetic is.
And when I keep seeing these cute girls and these cute lifestyle photos, it makes me excited in wanting
to do that myself.
So sometimes you have to source out inspiration and order for you to find that drive and motivation.
And that's the same with you guys listening to my podcast.
A lot of you guys say it brings you motivation and that's what gets you up in the morning,
which makes me so happy to hear.
and that's again that's another example it's finding something that brings you motivation in the drive you need to get up and get started
and it's crazy how much inspiration actually helps me from looking at Pinterest and videos and stuff because sometimes
i will begin getting in a slump and i think why am i not as motivated as i was one month ago when i was
i was doing so good i was so consistent i was feeling good i was doing everything i said i was going to do
and now I'm not, I'm feeling unmotivated, and then I reflect and realize, okay, I haven't at all
looked at any inspiration or motivation that's going to fuel that motivation that I need to get up
and get started. So then I'll just go on Pinterest. I start watching the creators that I like to watch
that are making me motivated. I like watching those videos. And that gets me up and getting started again.
It's really funny to say that something aesthetic or a certain style of content, whether that's on
Pinterest or something can make you excited to actually achieve your goals.
But it can because sometimes you look and think when they're living the lifestyle that you want,
you want that.
You want that lifestyle.
So doing that and seeing that makes you feel excited to think, okay, you know what?
I am going to put time into myself.
I am going to show up for myself today.
I am going to do these things, even though they're hard.
Look at her.
She did it.
And now I'm going to do it because I want that outcome.
I want that lifestyle.
So again, showing up for yourself, no matter what it does.
takes is the most important thing. You cannot sit with your own ways unless you want to stay in your
old ways. Depression cannot hit a moving target. When you get up, go after your goals. You get up and you
show up for yourself in the morning. When you get up and you actually find yourself and find what you
want and provide for yourself and your needs, that's when you're going to feel happier. Find progress,
see movement. And also, you may just find hope for yourself. Sometimes forcing yourself to do
these things, then seeing some progress after being uncomfortable and putting in effort is when
you finally find hope in yourself because you see the progress that you're making. Trust me,
you are not alone. We are all on our own journeys. I want the best for you and I know you can
have the best in life. But remember, the only person who you're going to spend the most time
within your life is yourself. So you have to show up for yourself. Nobody is going to do it except
for you. I love you so much and I hope you enjoyed this episode as much as I did recording it.
I can't believe this is my first episode I've recorded in a while now.
I'm just so happy to be back and it feels so good and I'm just so excited.
So I would love to hear what episodes you'd like to hear in the future and I will definitely
add it to my notes and future episodes.
I would love for you to share this episode over your story or Instagram or TikTok and
tag me in it and I would love to repost it.
Anyways, I love you so much.
I'm so proud of you.
And remember, you are the only person who can show up for yourself in depressed.
can't hit a moving target.
