Starting point is 00:00:00 Hi everyone, I hope you're well. We have had an amazing response to Kelly Favreau's story. Thank you so much. So I'm pleased to have Kelly here to give us a bit of an update on where things are at now that the series has been released. So without further ado, hi Kelly, how are you? Hi Christy. I am amazing. I am amazing. How are you? I'm good. And I just wanted to start by thanking you and your group for all your tireless efforts advocating for sexual assault survivors. You and I have been in contact for a few years now and it's all kind of culminated in this mini series being released just in the nick of time. And I wanted to hear where you're at with the petition and what the response has been at your end. So what's going on?
Starting point is 00:00:53 So your listeners are incredible. When your podcast was released to your premium listeners, I believe it was Sunday, we were sitting at about 2,200 signatures and now it's just past 10 o'clock in the morning where I am and we're currently sitting at 4,040 signatures. So thanks to your listeners, we've gone up almost 2,000 signatures in about four days. And the team that I work with at myvoicemychoice.org, we were blown away by this. We just keep watching the numbers go up, we're like, how is there more of them? Oh my goodness. So it's incredible. It's absolutely incredible to see this much support. I've been creeping on the comments on your social medias as well. And the support that's coming in from your listeners in the comments
Starting point is 00:01:48 basically saying, I had no idea this is a thing. This is terrible. Of course I'm signing. It's like, yeah, this is how we feel too. This is what started it. Everybody that's involved with myvoicemychoice, we're all publication ban people. We're all linked together because of a publication ban and we're from all corners of Canada. And none of us should know each other. There's no reason that any of our circles, any of our jobs, any of our anythings would ever cross. But we found each other on social media when we were posting about our own story saying, I just got a ban off my name. And then we reached out, I was like, oh my God, there's another one of me. And then you start to wonder, like, there's only like 10 of us that I've met
Starting point is 00:02:31 across Canada who've got the ban off their name. And I know that there's more and not everybody goes public. But it's just incredible. It's incredible just how much this has picked up over the last few days. And your listeners are just phenomenal people and sharing the petition and signing and expressing concern and writing letters to their MPs and our Prime Minister and the Attorney General. This really feels good. It feels like this law is actually going to change. Oh, that's so exciting. Wow. And a massive thank you to everyone listening who signed the petition. We appreciate it so much. And if you haven't signed yet, there's still time. Today is the last full day. It closes first thing Friday morning, March the 10th. See the show notes for
Starting point is 00:03:18 a link to the petition. And it's also on the front page of canadiantruecrime.ca. Kelly, before we go, I wanted to ask you quickly what happens next. So one of the co-founders, Morrell Andrews, her and I, and we're hoping a couple more from our team go back to Ottawa for the first of May to kick off Sexual Assault Survivor Month. So MP Laurel Collins has invited us out to basically watch what's about to happen in the house. So she'll be tabling the petition at that point and giving a statement on the work that we're doing in-house during that whole kickoff for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. We are incredibly hopeful for a private member's bill to come out from this. And we're incredibly hopeful that the
Starting point is 00:04:09 Senate is going to pass this. So right now, we're emailing MPs and senators and basically saying, hey, this is coming down the pipes later. We want to make sure you're aware of it. Here's all the information that we have and we're happy to give you more. But this is what the legislation or bill is going to look like. Please push it forward. There's enough people that are calling for change. There's enough survivors out there that are also under this ban. And the more I've spoken with a couple of survivors over the last couple of days who are like, do I have a ban on my name? And yeah, you probably do, buddy. You probably do. So people are becoming aware if they've been through the legal system, if they've been through the court process at all. People are now asking,
Starting point is 00:04:53 do I have a ban on my name? Have I been a breach of my own ban? What the hell is going on here? So the reaction again to the podcast, people are now starting to pay attention to their own cases, which is really, really cool. So this is kind of what's next. We're hoping that a lot more people go back to the crowns that they were working with saying, hey, does this apply to me too? And then have the option to get that ban off of their name. It's a very freeing and liberating feeling to be able to say your name without fear of going to jail. And you just saying those words out loud is just ridiculous. So yeah, it's been fun. I'm hoping that in a couple of months, when the dust has settled, you'll come back and give us an update along with Jade and Samantha
Starting point is 00:05:44 hopefully. But until then, where can people find you and your organization? So the best place to get updates is www.myvoicemychoice.org. In there, you'll have a link to the petition, which again closes on Friday, March 10th, just after nine o'clock Eastern time. There's also a link in there that will generate an email. If you're opening it in a tablet or a mobile, it'll generate an email for you. So all you're going to do is add your name to it and hit send it. It gets blasted off to all these MPs and the Prime Minister and the Attorney General. And then there's a little contact form in there. And if you fill out that contact form, that message will get directly to me. And I am a human. I am a mother. I do have a job. So it might take me a couple of days to
Starting point is 00:06:35 get back to you, but I will get back to you if you write, if you have questions, if you have concerns, if you want to learn more about the movement. That is the best way to get in touch with us. And I am more than happy to speak with you about publication bands and help you figure out the legal system and help you get the band off your name if you need it. That's so, so amazing. Kelly, thanks again for joining us today. You and your listeners are incredible. Again, we're blown away by the kindness that your listeners have shown us and keep sharing the petition. So tinyurl.com forward slash pub ban petition. And that'll link you right to the petition for you to sign.
Starting point is 00:07:22 Thanks again to Kelly Favreau for joining us. And thanks also to Jade Nielsen, Samantha Geiger, Morrell Andrews and all the other sexual assault survivors who continue to advocate for change. And look out for an update coming hopefully over the summer. That's where we'll leave it for now. I'll be seeing you again soon with a new Canadian true crime story. Thanks again.
