When my podcast Casefile True Crime featured episode 80 The Mysterious Murder of Beth Barnard it elicited a dramatic response from our listeners. We asked the true crime author Vicky Petraitis to create a series dedicated to exploring the murder investigation in more detail.

So when do you begin a story that ends in the death of one woman and the disappearance of another? There were comments that she made that made me think your marriage is not happy, is it? When Fergus Cameron began an affair with 23-year-old farmhand Beth Barnard, he told her his marriage was over. A friend of Vivian's told me that his constant denials that anything was going on between him and Beth were slowly driving Vivian crazy. Friends warned Beth against the affair. I just remember saying Beth you don't want to go there, you don't want to do that. On the night of Monday, September 22nd, everything came to a head. Neither Vivian nor Fergus would verbalise what's actually happened here.

Donald Cameron replied, um, it's Beth. I think she's not well. Her eyes were still open, she had a big A carved in her stomach. They were either angry or very visually upset, I can't remember that at all. I just didn't believe that Vivian could have done it. I was crying, she said to me, you've got to ring the detectives and I said no, I'm fine. It was like when someone's already decided what the outcome is going to be.
