Little nightmares too. Let's actually get back into a regular podcast. You know what's not in little nightmares too? Dog nuts. All right. No, seriously. Little nightmares one. I played it like a couple of weeks ago. I think I talked about it here. It's pretty good. It's not quite as good as inside, but it's like, it's like, like almost there, like almost there. Little nightmares too is an improvement on the first one. And I feel bad because it is so, so much closer to being almost as good as inside, but like, like just like it got right there and like the fingertips,

Starting point is 00:22:57 like the are clawing into the side and it just can't quite top it, which means it's excellent. It's still like absolutely excellent. And it is that exact type of game. Side scrolling a little 2.5 D ish side scrolling. It doesn't have the same running time. Yeah. Which is a problem. So like, it has the same running time as little nightmares one, which costs $25. But little nightmares two is 40. And I aced it in like four and a half hours. Like it is a terrible value. Like it is like, it is bad value. Great game. Absolutely great game. But like, it's, it's, it is actually a worse value than a movie ticket, which is, which is the, the, the, my favorite way of showing like how, how much of a

Starting point is 00:24:15 game has what value and it's like, well, yeah. Now for you American viewers is probably like 30. But, you know, in fact, I actually think I went through nightmares two faster than one because one, I didn't quite understand the puzzle ideas that were going for were in two, since I'd beaten one just like a week or two ago, right? Just right, right through. Excellent game. I don't know if it's a prequel or a sequel. It's one of those weird games where it's just like, a lot of cool imagery, a lot of great puzzles. I put it up there with like a braid or like an inside, but like, yeah, just like crazy short, just crazy short. I remember when this problem used to happen way more often when short games would have

Starting point is 00:25:11 half price or like, you know, I say half price, but the Canadian numbers, the New American numbers are going to get muddled. So I'll say like 40 bucks. And there was a point at which a number of releases were coming out, trying to like kind of maximize that. And then it feels like it kind of went away for a bit. I heard a pricing issue with the length of a game in quite a while. You know, it was the Wii U era. I think, I think probably I talked about it on the podcast for sure. I think the game that like blew me away the most ever about like, is that seriously it? Are you, are you for real? Is a doughnut county? Do you remember that game where you play as a whole?

Starting point is 00:25:59 I played doughnut county. Yeah. Right. Did you beat it? Yeah. Yeah. It was about an hour of your time. It's an hour. Yeah. Like it's astonishing. And it's like a, it's like a 15, like 10, $15 game. And like, I remember getting to like the lab and you fight the boss and like, cool, I wonder what cool tricks they're going to do for the rest of the game. And then credits roll. Yeah. I think the, the, the example is going to always be ground zeroes. Yeah. Well, ground zeroes has a lot in it. Yeah, it does. But like just that initial main story mission without the replays kind of thing was, it just hit people the wrong way with that. And that, that led to controversy that floated for a while, you know, and now like ground zeroes on

Starting point is 00:26:57 its own without, now that we're past that timeframe, it's kind of like, it's still a good fucking game. It's just in the, there's a window of time in which this price is going to also add a negative to people for the, for the right and for the buck. And I'm not the type of person who's going to sit here and have the, like the games, our counts be the be all and all of its value. I don't think that's, I don't, I don't think that is as useful as people think it is. Right. Like Hollow Knight is one of the best games ever. Hollow Knight would still be one of the best games ever, even if it was only half as long for its price. It's incredibly long. Yeah, it's, it's absurd. But like Daggerfall

Starting point is 00:27:43 does not suddenly become the best game ever because Daggerfall has a fucking land mass of the entirety of England, right? And so on and so forth. But like there's still like time to value doesn't not exist just because there's more than that, right? Because people have limited income. And when you look at, Hey, I could get, I mean, there's a, there's like probably a steam cell I could look at literally right now and, and go, you could get this for $4 or you could get, you could get the Spyro Reignited Trilogy for fucking 1749 right now. And that's literally three games. So that's, and that's why like, you know, there's the discussion which I've had many times where it's like, okay, there are, there's a game review in which you

Starting point is 00:28:40 objectively or attempt to objectively qualify like whatever the content is and rate it on, you know, the context it's released in as a video game. And then there's a like purchasing product review, product review, sure, where you incorporate the time, the price, the availability and lots of other things into a, should you purchase this? You know, like, yeah, because you go in form because one is how it stacks up as a piece of content forever. And the other is like, listen, you have $100 to spend on consumer like, you know, disposable income entertainment for the month. What are you going to do? Right. And I don't know, Hey, did you a is that Epic Games exclusive in the news this week? Absolutely. Okay, because I'm going to talk about it right

Right now, the all in one package for Kingdom hearts is 7990 Canadian. That is every Kingdom hearts game to ever come out right now on the Epic Game Store. That is the cost of one of the collections. Starting point is 00:30:53 So people pointed out that Black Friday was not that too long ago and Boxing Day was not that too long ago. And there was a bunch of sales. Zero Sigma Prime points out. Thank you. It is currently all Kingdom hearts all one collection is currently $30 on PSN. I was and on top of that you're paying that price. 100% price increase. And it's also just on a store that happens to suck. It just happens to suck. It's the biggest gouge I've ever seen of a of a re-release ever. It is like a 500% plus price increase. But there's never some of those games are 20 years old. They've never done anything PC related though, right? They've never done anything PC anything.

Starting point is 00:31:45 So this is actually like a hotly anticipated thing. So that price is, you know, hoping that people that have been waiting a long time will, you know, I suppose give in to fucking anticipation of getting it on PC. But Jesus, I think what might be the absolute worst like pricing mentality ever is this game's never been on the Xbox before. Yeah, but it's still six years old. Right. You can get it for $4. Yeah. No, then don't don't price it at $59.99. It's it's honestly like it's that Nintendo mentality that fucking sucks. And Nintendo doesn't get enough shit about that because it's just stubborn over a long enough period of time. Eventually, there's nothing to really say. They're just not they're just never

I think the only thing it doesn't include is the Kingdom Hearts three fucking um what do you call it DLC but holy shit it's not 30 dollars on the PSN store it's fucking 25 it's cheaper sick it's like you can get all of them on the PS4 for half the cost no less than half the cost of one of them on the PC so big picture here uh I would be worried that this is a like representation of Square's PC strategy going forward and put on the epic game store at absolute maximum price possible if that's how they want to handle like Final Fantasy games getting ported for example or anything else I mean Square's never

Starting point is 00:40:18 and then I'm like I have like 28 fucking cat shines which are the shine of the day how many fucking cat shines are in this goddamn thing there's a hundred okay it's it's like a like a open world it's one Mario 64 it's one level but it's an open world level yeah and um I saw Gene talking about it uh that's Gene Park our guest from last week who I think perfectly perfectly nailed exactly what Bowser's fury is it is the Wind Waker of whatever the next Mario game will be because the way it works is it is big and sprawling and you can go anywhere and levels are subdivided into little islands and once you get like you'll get to like the very first one and it'll be like get to the top and get the cat shine like it has been

Starting point is 00:41:14 every game right and then then I'm like oh what do I do and the game's like go somewhere else I'll like I guess I'll go somewhere else and when I came back the that little island had reoriented all of its uh uh architecture and put enemies in different spots and now gives you a different different goal and it is the experience of jumping in and out of like a Mario 64 painting but it's literally just leave and come back um and it's leave and come back over what looks like 15 20 these little islands and everything resets and everything reset and once you get far enough away from it it changes into the next version of its level okay and we'll rotate around basically rotate around until you get all the all the shines so hard calling that the next Mario game is going

Starting point is 00:42:05 to be like a big basically Mario Breath of the Wild it will be a big open world Mario that's like go over there there's a level there do the level is there a level there but this is at least them testing it out and considering it this this feels like overwhelmingly like the prototype for a new game so I don't think I have to play it obviously to to see how much how well that works but on paper open world Mario doesn't sound like something I'd want I feel like Mario games strengths are in their like single path like single lane you know yeah fun and optimizing that and then just taking you from place to place and having a whole bunch of those single pathway of fun it's that's uh why one of the I actually just like Odyssey's some of their levels are way too big

Starting point is 00:43:02 like and they're they're like there's like fucking 60 fucking moons and in a single I liked Odyssey though I mean there's areas where the map is pretty wide like for so having just played Galaxy 2 not too long ago that is much that is very much like pathways and areas of like Odyssey for example like New Donk City and and the moon and you know a couple other spots are like they they open up a bit more but they still have a pathway to the goal which ultimately is fine um it could be really fun if they like rework the way objectives goals and your overall methods of transportation work but um I don't it's yeah on paper I'm not I'm not too sure how much I'd like it there's also been giant levels that did work really well when now

Starting point is 00:43:57 that I'm thinking back to um uh Odyssey when you go to like the the town in the desert and you're kind of yeah Odyssey really actually come to think of it Odyssey opened up quite a bit and it ended up working out there fine so maybe it's not that maybe maybe it's fine yeah actually I'm thinking about it now I'm like wait hold on a minute there were some really odd levels yeah uh are actually much smaller overall like the like the the the totality of like let's say the desert like the Mexico desert level yeah I take it back it was fine um the the the little islands that you're dealing with in Bowser's Fury are like one fourth of that in size so they're doing a big giant level that's super huge right like the biggest Mario level ever that is actually made up of levels

Starting point is 00:44:50 that are on par like smaller than the ones in Mario 3D world and it constantly just has you going just all over the place doing all sorts of little tasks it's really good it's really good like shocker I know that a mainline Mario game is really good but like there's a really clear path forward as to what this is and the whole time uh giant Kaiju Bowser is uh on the map yeah so he's he's chilling for about 80% of the time and then when he gets fucking super pissed um you he he completely changes the architecture of literally every single stage because he'll like like molten lava rocks will fall and form platforms all over the place and he'll do his like Godzilla Kaiju beam and you can use that to break part parts of the map that only he can break and if you get a

Starting point is 00:45:53 shine during that process it'll upset him and he'll leave uh but you have to get like five shines then 20 shines then 40 shines to re-unlock the giant catbell to beat his ass but he's not like mr x following you no no no he's on like a timer okay uh and like it'll start to rain and you're like oh okay it's it's gonna be Bowser time soon let's try and find a spot that Bowser can destroy so I can get a shine and get him the fuck out of here it's really good it's really really good I think I think it's great I'm excited uh shocker I know Mario games are good I know um last but not least and definitely the most surprising game that I've played in a while is I am playing the early access survival co-op procedurally generated village building

Starting point is 00:47:07 Viking simulator Valheim which if you have been listening to me for many years you would probably be confused because I hate all of those things well not necessarily Vikings but Vikings yeah yeah okay yeah what no it's like I hate the Minecraft I hate it I hate the survival game I hate it uh this one's pretty good um because of its focus at a glance I would assume this was Minecraft like but at a glance you wouldn't and the Minecraft the the Minecraft part of it is literally just go out hit trees make a house monsters are trying to fuck you up as you try and build your house yeah I'm seeing combat etc um so I rated uh I rated uh Jenna Lynn last week Jenna Lynn Meary and she was playing Valheim

Starting point is 00:48:13 so yeah man you should you should play Valheim it's dope and like I think I hate this game but I'll think about it and then the other night I couldn't sleep so I came downstairs and uh every single friend that I have in my personal discord was hanging out in a valheim server like every single goddamn one had the little discord thing this is Valheim okay and I loaded it in and uh like Jim's arguing I need wood for the boats I need the boats do you guys got the the boat for the woods nah man I'm getting out iron oh I gotta get deer heads for this thing etc and I'm like yeah I don't know I don't know fuck it it's 20 bucks so I picked it up and I load it in and the first impression it gives you in this particular scenario

Starting point is 00:49:11 is fantastic because when you load into a server it does not tell the people in that server that you have loaded into the server and you do not appear on their map until you toggle I would like to appear to other players on map so I went uh and found my pal strident and stood behind him as he chopped wood for like two minutes until he turned around and was like what the fuck okay hey mate hey pat okay and I was like hey hey I'm doing this now um you so you got to play at co-op with with people yeah as you're as you're I played it I played it no actually I played a co-op with people for about an hour and they had built they had built a little uh a little settlement and helped me figure out how to make some leather clothes and whatnot uh but then uh

Starting point is 00:50:07 the our friend who is the persons whose pc the fucking server runs off of went to sleep because it was seven in the morning I went oh okay and then I went and played single player myself and got to discover the like like basically playing by myself like okay is this good do I actually like this the answer is yeah there's a reason it has an overwhelmingly positive review score on steam right now um it is it dumps you in a procedurally generated world mostly forest you know but then there's the different biomes and the very first thing it does is say hey dude there's a boss out there to kill you're gonna kill it but before that build up a little house build get a spear get a get a sword learn how to chop wood etc and the creation of that clear

Starting point is 00:51:08 goal helps the second thing is that it doesn't have the I don't know how to describe it have you played minecraft no but I was about to ask if you've played minecraft because maybe you'd have fun with it I played about 10 minutes of minecraft and my biggest main problem with minecraft is minecraft all right I'll tell you I will tell you right now why I don't love minecraft there's two reasons one I I don't like the aesthetic I it it it's I find it revolting two I hate the crafting system in minecraft which considering minecraft is a crafting game that's an issue because minecraft has that thing where you put uh you put like a work bench down and then you fucking do a recipe and like a symbol to do a thing I hate that I hate it in valheim

Starting point is 00:51:58 I kill a deer I pick up some deer guts and it says hey dude you just learned how to make a deer cape you need some bones though like okay I can go get some bones etc it uh it kind of plays like a like a low rent dark souls like control wise so and fighting fighting is bad but okay so the placement of the ingredients then is the issue as opposed to just having them on a list it's not just that it's like you're not in this game you're not compared to the average survival game you're not eating food to not die you're eating food to buff yourself just all these little things um probably the thing I think is the most impressive is the uh housing system where uh you can you first have to even up the ground with a hoe and then you want to lay down a foundation

Starting point is 00:53:00 and then each piece that you snap into place will show you via color coding how structurally sound it is and if you just start building straight up it'll eventually turn red and your fucking house will completely fall apart and so I was building like a small house and I was experimenting with what angle of fetched roof houses I can get away with or uh what uh if if cross beams would help it's not quite physics but it is like a rule set based on how far you are from the ground how flat the ground is with the supports you have uh put in uh and the best oh sorry after you sounds like it would be fun with friends but a lot more dry on your own yeah it depends what you're looking for because despite being literally the same game it is communally completely different right like

Starting point is 00:53:57 as a solo player it's you chilling out in the wilderness and making it your own as a multiplayer it's like you you build fast you build fastest shit because it's not because travel time is a serious consideration it's not uh like say you got five people you're not going five times faster you're going like 15 times faster because you no longer have to include travel time with any tasks um so probably the best example of what the game has going on that I think is really neat is in order to sleep you need a fire which is pretty standard but putting a fire in your house and sealing your house up uh kills you because the smoke will pool up in your ceiling and make you die and so you have to leave at

Starting point is 00:54:55 least a hole out for your your little house but then if you just leave a hole in your roof it'll rain on your fire so then you have to you have to like do thatching in like a corner or reverse structure so the smoke actually goes out and so the rain doesn't fall in so you essentially build like a fucking like a like a thatched chimney so once you build a house and get resources what do you do all right so basically the my morning was spent chopping down trees building a house getting armor getting a spear getting a shield cooking food etc while also trying to figure of now what yes and also now equipped with kill kill items I then go and figure out how do I actually summon the boss and apparently I need two deer heads that I throw in their altar

Starting point is 00:55:51 then I fight the boss upon defeating the boss I will learn how to make new tools new tools will open up new types of you know uh terraforming scavenging mining etc which I will then use to upgrade my house upgrade myself then go kill boss you're right okay it is so that's monster hunter with way more time spent on the prep and survival is a part of outside of boss fighting yeah yeah okay my friends who play these games a lot more than I do the comparison is apparently a lot closer to terraria than it is to minecraft okay so you said earlier that the combat was functional but not great yeah it's weird it's like monster hunter combat is obviously exceptional so the goal being to go fight the boss that you build up towards how is that experience

Starting point is 00:56:52 I'll let you know tomorrow okay okay um but it's definitely better than the other like I don't like terraria's controls or combat I don't like minecraft's controls or combat I don't like you know this is one of the things this one it's not the best but it's it's good because if the goal is to do all of that to eventually build up to fighting the boss and then restarting the loop with all the loot you get um if the boss fight is really fun then that's a golden loop you know yeah I was told uh I had an idea which was hey guys would it be smart to build my house near where the boss gets summoned because if I die I want to be able to go fight the boss much more quickly and then they said don't do that because the boss will wreck your house

Starting point is 00:57:44 and I went oh so I put my house like a couple hundred feet away um and hopefully that's far enough I also learned can you fight it together oh yeah totally as a group and you do the okay yeah it's uh one to ten people okay um I learned earlier today I posted a screenshot of my house and was told that I found like a stonehenge looking series of rocks and I was like oh cool I can build a house in the middle and it'll look nice and then I could put like a fence around the rocks um and was later told upon after spending five hours building my relatively good-looking house that uh those rocks denote some kind of treasure location that you have to excavate which means that whole thing will have to come down at some point the whole thing the whole fucking thing

Starting point is 00:58:38 yeah um I guess uh my since you know me I'm I'm someone who like tends to like not get bread crumbed that efficiently I feel no you need you need it now you need it and put usually with style as well I mean I if if it did work on me I would enjoy things a lot more than I do but because a lot of the times it doesn't I would be fixated on like okay so this boss though but what's going on here you know like that and it's like dude but the journey there is supposed to be part of the enjoyment so you're you're missing the forest for the trees you know well also there are literally five bosses in the game right now and 99 99 percent of your game time is uh environmental let's say right never mind I mistook oh there's seven now cool I mistook how

Starting point is 00:59:34 many um how frequently that would occur I thought that was a like um you know a lot of them probably the weirdest part about the game and well you could probably look at a video and see this yourself it has a wildly inconsistent series of art priorities which actually work really really well the texture quality on this game might be like it's like a 2000s game it looks like quake in terms of in terms of texture quality I'm going to send you a screenshot that shows it off really well there's like I'm looking at the backgrounds of it I can see I can see the the uh the aesthetic choices for what they are right what it does have however despite like the texture quality and even the model quality being really low it is throwing every graphical option ever not valgenheim what's

Starting point is 01:00:34 it called valheim valheim I've typed valgenheim and that's that's a guilty gear character that's for honor sorry that's no that's that's valgenheim is the sorry the blaze blue character blaze blue character yes also it's it's it's a it's a for honor uh thing yeah but valheim so the game will the game's like a single gig like or 600 megabytes like it's really small and that's clearly part of the reason so the textures are super low quality that it like kind of looks like a ps1 game but better than that that's a pretty that's a that's an over exaggeration let me so you remember I heard you me describing like the smoke in your house yeah the smoke is like high end super super high end particle physics that pool in the roof of your house and like are affected properly by

Starting point is 01:01:32 the wind the sunshafts are as high quality as it can get the rain and weather effects I saw trees being bent to like a 45 degree angle from the wind which I've never seen in a game ever um so it looks like the like it's fictional oh the screenshot traveler yeah yeah yeah yeah exactly that because like the screenshots are deliberately these are this is a low poly character these are like low poly um environments but their high tech but the texture quality is and the texture quality is also it's not it's crisp but it's also deliberately pixelated so it is like yeah it's an intentionally like a retro look to some things the characters are the most noticeable with the with the style that they're going for and I guess that's to kind of make it somewhat minecrafty in there in the

Starting point is 01:02:29 I don't know it it it it runs on almost anything and it's a tiny game that you can put on anything but also it's it's the game's really weird looking like the water physics the wind physics the light physics I guess you would call it like every every special effect a game can have is turned up to the maximum and it's being rendered on what is essentially like a open a giant open world ps1 game so it really does look like a like like whereas octopath traveler was for super like super nintendo games this would be like the octopath traveler of like a ps1 game yeah like some of the environments some of the buildings do look like um like fire watch level though you know but seeing the people themselves and like this staircase up close and like the actual like yeah

Starting point is 01:03:20 the the deliberately pixelated textures on some of these surfaces it's it's it's interesting yeah it does cool little things associated with the super super gigantic size of like this type of procedural world I was talking to my friends and they said they had discovered one dungeon in a 47 in game days just by accident they literally like tripped over it um and uh they were spending most of the time that I was hanging out with them they were trying to find a merchant because one merchant shows up in a single biome and you you just gotta go find him and that could be like you know a 10 by 10 kilometer fucking area of deep forest like yeah you want to you want to buy a fancy helmet go buy it you go find the fucking merchant so if you start you'll get your friends

Starting point is 01:04:14 and go get them if you start a game on someone's uh specific pc server can you um do like minecraft and kind of like create your own like world geography and and rules or is it yeah just um iterating the it's it's seems to be just iterating the man came but uh like what happened was when I loaded in a brand new character and then showed up in my friend's thing I still had to fight the first boss like they had all killed the first boss but I still had to fight it to complete my progression but they could help me with that um and uh when I discovered their little town I also discovered that they had fucking deforested what looked like a two square kilometer area just to build like a four or five building town which that seems realistic I guess

Starting point is 01:05:12 but like I got to the area I'm like I don't think it used to look like this they're like no it wasn't it was trees all the way to the fucking river and make sure there's not that anymore yeah um probably the last thing that I'd like to mention because it's it's the it's one of the game's like little twists is that it has a level system and the level system is oblivion's level system did you ever play that walls uh no but I mean I know what it is so oblivion's was dude did you jump you get a little do little points to your jump skill did you use a shield you get a little points to your uh to your block skill right uh and that is sailing jumping running mine mining wood cutting blocking hitting with clubs hitting with axes hitting with spears

Starting point is 01:06:03 etc etc etc right um but the interesting thing about it zero leveling I'm not actually familiar but let's just say yeah do the action build the number yeah yeah but the interesting thing about it is that your character's progression is saved to your character regardless of where they are so I'm running my little pristine world where I just made a single little house if my buddy strident came by his wood cutting is high enough that he can chop down trees and like two swings it's taking me like 10 swings to chop down a tree and what it means is is that even if you were to join a new person's game or everybody hey let's all do a new server if you were to keep the same characters you would be able to build up back to where you were way faster like way faster

Starting point is 01:07:05 because just the amount of time that you would have to spend on gathering materials or killing enemies would be like nil compared to what you started with this which makes me actually think about oh maybe I will go and hang out in other people's servers and help them build a thing because my character will improve your yeah all of your all of your like every action you do adds to the to ticks up the numbers no matter what right yeah and my uh in your inventory stays on your character like your whatever's on your backpack essentially you can take with you which means if I were to look at my little house now and completely demolish it and manage to fit every single piece of wood into my inventory I could literally go to anybody

Starting point is 01:07:52 else's server and just completely recreate the whole fucking thing from scratch using the same materials and learning how to build that house was more than half of the process of building that house like getting wood was another 30% like actually having all the wood I need and just going okay I know how to build the the the that's true I know how to build the minor wall I know how to build the cross beam just that would take me now maybe four to five minutes you know just play lego with it you do play lego but because you're having to deal with so for example when I built my house originally I did not fully level the ground and so parts of my house were farther above the ground than being flat on it which meant that when I was building on the right

Starting point is 01:08:42 side of my house and I got up to the third level of thatched roofs they all started to fall apart because I was working on a strong enough foundation so literally learning how the like not physics but how the rules of what you can build on top of what in terms of structure internalizing those means I can build the fucking next one super fast okay and my buddy creepy porpoise was in the middle of building this gigantic fucking cross cross beam long house the last I saw her and I don't know how the fucking cross beams even work but they're probably good for something in turn keeping your fucking roof from falling down okay it's cool it's really cool it's neat I think it's neat so that's valheim

Starting point is 01:09:35 that's right this is the name of the game there I'm gonna think of valkenheim every time that's just yeah probably it's gonna autocomplete probably the weirdest thing that I have uh just saw today was that the devs were like congrats everybody we had two million sold whoo big big success right uh and their fun fact was like uh the the game's population is now uh multiples of magnitude larger than any amount of vikings in all of history like there was a there was a theoretical like maximum cap on the viking community that was about 500 000 people at its peak so there are four times as many people playing valheim as there ever were vikings which is

Starting point is 01:10:27 it's weird right that's just one of those scale things that's difficult to understand but it's also the population of the planet at the time you know was like what like like two million fucking or whatever the fuck it was you know hmm it's it's one of these things where these these games there's there's a lot of these types of games right there's a lot of good ones terraria is maybe the best game that I own that I hate I hate terraria I fucking hate everything about terraria I hate the way terraria looks I hate the way it controls I think the way the bosses work is stupid I don't like the nonsense with the upgrade shit and I look at that and I go oh I hate it I hate it so much what an incredible

Starting point is 01:11:17 game that I fucking hate I hate that I hate terraria and it's it's just like the way this is done the way this is done the way this is done are the way are the opposite of the way that I would want right and same thing with minecraft same thing with rust same thing with all these types of games but valheim finally I'm like oh I actually like the way this thing does the things that it does and building up a little settlement myself like brick by brick is appealing uh as you're just that that point on the on the vikings reminds me of something I forget what I was listening to but I heard something recently about how uh in real life nights were not as much of this big noble gallant group of people that were you know sworn to their lords

Starting point is 01:12:14 and doing all these things and there was a bunch of them that were really just bastard sons of nobility that couldn't really inherit anything oh yeah and they kind of just went and hung out in the forest and were like big like ripping friends and just could just grow up and they kind of were assholes until the concept of jousting was was brought about as a thing for them to do because these douchey bastard no non-noble noble types were just hanging around terrorizing people there's a there's a long long series of classes throughout history where it's like you got a feudal system you have an entire underclass of people who are nobles or noble adjacent that will not inherit shit and they will become a weird warrior underclass

Starting point is 01:13:06 which is like like the which is the exact same thing as the samurai and then that warrior underclass is going to tell you actually we are like the ballsyest super magic heroes ever we are protecting the everything we are the best but they're just fucking sitting around but they're just like well my older brother got the castle yeah yeah yeah so and I have no skills but I'm rich mm-hmm time to become a knight of the rose yeah yeah well yeah well I'm shocked that it peaked my interest but it did and where can people see that Valheim I don't know it's not on my schedule should I change that I don't know maybe it will be maybe

Starting point is 01:13:56 I'll switch it around but regardless uh you check that out on twitch.tv slash pat stairs at oh I forgot to mention something woolly I had a wonderful week of OBS just crashing on me every hour huh okay every hour did you fix that I eventually fixed it after two full days of tech support one nice man sent me a DM going I think it is your Nvidia drivers because everyone on the Nvidia forums is complaining about the Nvidia drivers killing their OBS streams sure enough I go down there and discover that a problem I have had off and on since literally October has been made extra bad by the recent pat the recent driver are you on studio or stream labs I am uh OBS studio okay I don't like OBS stream labs I yeah same no they're fucking hate OBS

Starting point is 01:15:00 stream labs I don't get it it has as many plugins uh and uh yeah so if I'm running on October drivers now and it totally works it was this it was the sole crushing experience of used display driver uninstaller to clean out your drivers install one driver back all right go to inspector run a test stream run the test stream for two hours did it fail yeah okay use display driver uninstaller roll it back run a test stream for two hours did it crash yeah like just just like will I be able to fix this I don't know so what was the actual final step that did fix it though go back to driver number four well is it driver number four five six dot seven one from October 7th before the problem showed up I was able to discover people talking about you have had this problem in your

Starting point is 01:16:17 drivers for the past five driver releases I am stuck using the four point seven one whatever's because they're the last stable ones and sure enough I installed and used that one and those are stable drivers yeah anytime there's a little check mark that's like would you like to try out unstable experimental drivers for your shit on on your your updates and it's just like why did you ask me if I'm down to go base jumping while you're at it yeah the the the worst part is is the drivers that I'm installing regularly they're not beta drivers they're not experimental drivers they're the Nvidia we QA these things they work I promise drivers they've just been terrible over the past couple months it's total

Starting point is 01:17:09 like blew my whole weekend oh shit I should probably mention this also played vermin tide with shy and DK and ross you can check that out on a quiet shy's channel literally right now she just posted it you know vermin tide two is great but the whole time I was playing it all I could think about was like dude dark tide though what about dark tide that's like vermin tide but in the future think about it cool um so uh over at agrius pat stairs at no stairs at over at pat stairs at that's right yeah right right uh okay well um over on this side of the fence uh what went down well for one I decided to uh grab the neo remastered collection install that shit and get back in and see what's going on uh I want to pick first I mean I grabbed both

Starting point is 01:18:16 games but I want to jump back into the first one because I want to pick up where I left off you know yeah I've been doing the same thing actually I just didn't bother mentioning because I'm just replaying the same stuff I played last time yeah so I know that two is like has all the good shit and you can jump right in and make your custom character and all that but I'm just like I want to I want to continue where I left off I was enjoying myself you know so the general thing that I got when I was like hey should I play neo one or should I just skip to neo two was play through neo one once and then just spend all the remaining time you want as much as you want in neo two I mean even if it was like hey you can skip to two I'm like yeah but

Starting point is 01:19:00 I liked what I was doing in one I was having fun with that so uh I you know popped it open and uh yeah well step one of course was like oh fuck my saves aren't here oh fuck they're not on the cloud shit what do I do how do I get this going and then it's like okay so uh you can use the cloud tool in the game to transfer your saves over no problem oh weird but what you have to do is you when you download the collection it's going to give you one remastered and two remastered on your ps5 you have to then specifically say no no go download neo ps4 version and then it'll download the ps4 version which will then hide your remastered version from the lineup all right so it's still installed but it's hidden it's hiding the ps5 version so then you boot the original

Starting point is 01:19:59 and uh you you load your save and then you upload it to the in-game save uh cloud tool and then you quit out and then you uninstall that version and then your your remastered version comes back you jump in there you grab your save no problem easy peasy bread and cheesy and you continue where you left off uh you know I mean that is that is so neat for sure it's it's honestly it's the same way that like save cross transfer worked in like dragon's crown and and things like that and at least I didn't lose my progress it was it was it was you know I had to take some extra steps to download the original game and do that but it's fine you know in the end it just loaded my shit up and we were good to go um cracked that bitch on 4k you know pick it back up

Starting point is 01:20:55 jump into the game and oh fuck oh god oh Jesus what is happening how do you even play this again that is literally exactly what happened to me and I restarted okay okay so I didn't restart but I took my time to go back and reread and redo the tutorials and just treated as if it were starting again because uh this is possibly the hardest game to reintegrate into after ditching out that I've ever played it's I'm trying to think of a worse pretty vicious yeah I'm trying to think of a worse case and this might be the the the top and um just going over your lessons for example or your uh the stuff in the dojo where you want to reacquaint with how everything works is you're looking at descriptors for things and they've translated everything so literally literally

Starting point is 01:21:57 that like you don't have a singlish a single English word to help you out when you're looking at like way of the omio zara ken you know or something like that and you're like yeah that but what's that one as opposed to way of the omio like kufu or whatever that one is like they just they're it's like it's way of the weeaboo weeaboo and it just has like things like that just lined up and I'm like ah k right and um you go back in and you're like okay yes here's my weapon this was my stances I forget which ones I particularly like the muzam but you're getting back used to that and then it's like okay wait now go to your skills remember what skills you bought and then when you buy oh which one you have which button in which stand yeah yeah yeah which stance which weapon which button

Starting point is 01:22:51 right and you're like oh my god that's true each weapon had its own special equipped ability to each button that you have to fucking go back in and take a look at and like all right I did unlock quite a few of them with the kusari gamma so I'm going back to see what I said there and then you're like okay now in the meantime what boons did you give yourself when you were at the the kodama shrine so that you can you know get a little buff here or there or like go in with your your your kunai prepared with your ninjutsu skills and things like that right and I'm like oh man right there's all of that um and then I saw you know just went through the tutorial again to get it all down and hit a weird a weird problem on the like the end of the basic

Starting point is 01:23:43 tutorial if you're too strong and you kill the demon in one hit when it's trying to teach you about purification uh the tutorial never ends because it the fight never starts so fucking whoops c-class bug on that um the tutorial doesn't function properly if you are too strong when you go back to it uh but anyway uh I think if you unequip yeah I had to unequip everything and do like a really weak kick to kind of get the fight to start anyway so um then you go back and you look at your uh so there's the skills then there's the uh you just get to your equipment and the thing you were talking about yes you just hit that wall of like oh my god why was I wearing this yeah and then you know so you go back and you're looking at each one and you're reading

Starting point is 01:24:30 each stat on it you're like yeah okay I liked this and I fused it with that to create this and I'm reverse engineering all my steps to figure out why I was wearing what I was wearing and then at some point I'm just like look man everything that's not purple just sell it just break it down for materials just pull it up or just set this is how we let her sell it or whatever just get it out of here get it out of my fucking inventory you do that with your weapons you do that with your your your equipment and then you're like okay now it's time to go look at your prestige omio points and oh my god ooh something points and those are for like completing mini achievements in the game and those titles yes and those things are those titles exactly now are going to unlock

Starting point is 01:25:18 your you choose one of four specific buffs and then like yeah like it's just it's just so much there's just so much that there's nothing at you it is like oh so that's like I can understand I saw people talking about um like what the the advice was like some people said play neo one once and then play neo two until you're done like what does that mean and like well I put like 2000 hours in a neo two because like all of that shit and increasing like uh post game difficulties means that it turns into like action diablo like it it stops being souls and starts being action diablo and so that's all great but man like this the situation you are describing is very real I just it is it is like

Starting point is 01:26:20 like the setup screen legitimately has more going on than monster hunter does right right right yeah yeah I mean dude like at a point I remember I was like running around with my fucking animal buff and I was like wait right your animal buff and then I go to the menu for it and I'm like which one did I have equipped and like each whether you pick the earth fire earth fire water or electric or lightning you know like uh you're like these are all changing like maybe 10 specific little percentages and oh yeah it's not like oh this one and like they're all you know they have their particular uses so you just you know you have to like pay attention to like what specific little thing of these things you care the most about um and uh

Starting point is 01:27:13 yeah and what there is there is more there was more customization to be had right with the spirits and then and then there's the actual just the basic leveling which is a whole other thing um or dexterity is like mainly affecting kusari gamma so I like that so I'm going to put that stat up but then right right other other weapons are attributed to other stats that you know otherwise is not 100% souls like so don't fall for that trap um and yeah and you just and then you you finally spent the three hours it is to make sure you know how your character it continues to live and then you go okay and you click yes on the stage and then you walk forward and just die instantly opposite the game is vicious oh you had the opposite I had the opposite issue

Starting point is 01:28:00 my cat like right before I left the game uh wherever I left off I had built myself some good shit oh amazing armor and amazing weapons and amazing buffs and amazing passive abilities so I walked forward and just dominated the level no problem and I was doing things where I was like I don't even remember this ability but like I had a thing on where I would do like a kusari gamma combo or like a hammer axe combo um and then instead of key pulsing I would dodge out of the way but the dodge yeah says a key pulse yeah and I was like did I put something on that key pulse is what I dodge literally the best ability in the entire game you know and I was like I don't remember putting that on but I guess I did because this is amazing you know and uh then you're like all

Starting point is 01:28:55 right I got my my bow and arrow I got my gun uh we're taking shots what did I want to put like it just yeah I just whatever the state I left myself from the past in was a very very good one so I went in and crushed the the next couple levels with fairly uh low uh trouble and I'm gonna go do the uh twilight missions that appear I gotta do some of those to like those are bullshit yeah I remember correctly those are the super bullshit ones you know but anyway like I by the end of it it was like I'm like okay I remember now that there was a lot of things that I deliberately chose to ignore I remember that I mentally put my efforts into caring about some basic things with damage how much I do and how much I take and how much

Starting point is 01:29:49 key I'm using and how much I'm conserving and then what basic moveset things I wanted but I'm like look I'm not throwing out kunai all the time I don't care about my omyo ninjutsu preparing seven kunai like it's not gonna do anything for me right and I'm also rarely using my my big pupper animal buddy and I know I probably should because it's a nice big buff but it's so temporary and you gain it gain meter back much more and you gain the meter back so I should be using it but right now like the things I'm fighting I'm killing without needing it so I'm just like all right you know let me just go back to focusing on the damage you do the damage you take and how much key how much stamina you have you know and then we'll just we'll work it from there

Starting point is 01:30:35 I started glancing at the glamour for a second and I'm like fuck off like that's another couple hours of my life glamouring everything to be the way I want but I will get back to it it's great great game still fucking phenomenal has like apparently like a full like as you would expect a full sequels amount of shit just thrown on top of all of that shit like for example living weapon is completely replaced by what is essentially devil trigger but they are completely unique like mechanically controllable fucking monsters sick and they also have a mechanic or it's god what button was I forget what the button was but you have your fucking demon form come out to do what is this was is a counter hit so when enemies do like a big red unblockable hit

Starting point is 01:31:31 you throw out your counter hit move and it knocks them on their ass okay and it's there's so much there's so much in that game I mean dude like I also remembering the the like how you can be stamina starved so often because if you swing and then they counter attack you're now empty on stamina you're zero you're like you literally like like that like the enemy blocking and then hitting you leaves you at zero stamina which leaves you exhausted and standing there waiting to take damage I was like right all of that shit um and then the there's you can summon people to fight but then there's people who just get auto summoned when you walk up to them and it goes and they just come jumping out at you you know um like just and like oh the the dual missions

Starting point is 01:32:23 where you get like a one-on-one you know those are vicious shit fucking vicious but great so much fun I I just I yeah I remember like I'm getting back to the things I loved about it and it is the the thing that's probably the most impenetrable of all of those things I'm mentioning is just how like unapologetically Japanese the the script remains even in English like your omio techniques your omio magic like what's an omio yeah they know what the game literally has no description for what the word omio means like like even like the little side missions where it's like this person had to go get this object that's a ancient Japanese treasure of some kind to give to this person and it just won't explain what those things are or you know yeah it's every

Starting point is 01:33:23 noun in this sentence is a word I don't understand and it's like maybe it's like give me a little context please just a little bit though that being said I don't know if you remember because you're probably way past this part because you got farther though you got like way farther than me but that is appropriate considering William and they're like can we not call you William please can we please call you like Anjisan because we can't pronounce William because you're a foreigner and he's like oh okay I guess and it's like yeah no you're a stranger in strange land you don't understand shit also it's like here's the here's the haircuts and beards you can unlock to customize your William so if you want to which is the the predecessor to you want to just make

Starting point is 01:34:17 Majima I mean I just want to just make your favorite common writer actor I'm gonna just I'm gonna just make him the bearded ponytail guy because I guess he still has to be the neo man so that is and also he's in the second game as that bearded ponytail man yay yay I have it on good authority that I'm pretty sure you can fight him in the second game cool which makes that game great uh I'm wondering I have to I mean I hard to say until it's done but from the jump they probably should have made it custom character from neo one like it probably should have been custom character from from day one uh overall there's a there's a lot of good it's a really good custom character too like especially since you're like you know fighting other people's like ghost memories and there's a

Starting point is 01:35:19 you know indirect multiplayer and then direct multiplayer thing going on it would have been better to just be like you know full-on custom character so but yeah uh it it despite you know all that obtuseness at the end of the day the game that you're playing itself is very fun and the the that remains as tight as ever it's fast when you want to sprint across the map it's you know you know like you're not it's it there you don't have to fall into souls habits in a way like you can you can just blitz to places and do things really really quickly if you want to you know we got the dark souls series and we had a lot of games take their shot and like most of them were dismal failures and there were a couple mediocre ones but like neo is legitimately the

Starting point is 01:36:13 only good ones like this is good and it's enough of its own thing it's doing its own thing in a lot of ways the inspiration is very obvious but like yes i would gladly see more neo in the future like it's kind of every time you you complete the objective and it's like hey man you want to just dip and it's like ah no no no let me let me go get my shit you know i'm out here i did it i cleared it let me take my time but like if you want to just book it through these objectives you can fucking do it you know and and and just like speed run everything almost like it's it goes so quickly if you want it to i like if i had to change like literally one single thing in neo like in general for a third game is it would be the stage structure jumping in and out of the same areas in different

Starting point is 01:37:10 remixed ways like i want i want just just give me a fucking real proper map like one map like i love that shit i yeah i do too the the i the benefit of this approach is that like you can get your initial stage layout and then your scholar of the first sin layout and then your bonfire aesthetic layout immediately like like really immediately too yeah like so the variety of the area is like you know you get to maximize that um so there's there's pros and cons you know whoa okay i just saw somebody say that team ninja says they want neo 3 to be open world and possibly in china that would be cool damn that's drastic okay um yeah uh it it's it would be it it would the open worldness is also something though we're like in a game like this you kind of do

Starting point is 01:38:21 need to like fucking get back to that blacksmith and spend a while sorting through all that stuff like the you would be sitting at shrines forever um and there's times when like i won't unless you can teleport between just one shrine and another and kind of yeah yeah it could be done it could be done yeah there's ways of making it do both but in any case um great remaster uh i don't know about you but i between the options of like um high fps and and uh 4k i prefer 4k well because the high fps is 120 ish and the 4k is 60 and it's like it's a solid 60 so it's like yeah okay i'll take yeah that's the way that's the way to go yeah for sure um so that's neo one and it's good also still good at a pretty obtuse fighting game called furia royale

Starting point is 01:39:30 never even heard of it no one has it's this is uh an for good reason because it's a patreon project fighting game uh all right it's kind of like ease laugh this other obtuse one from way back in the day um so it's a project that's on patreon it's been around for a couple years now actually uh i i recognize it from way back in the day because i believe it um was a mugen-based thing that was called glitzen glam brawl but then got renamed to furia royale and it is essentially punch girl fighter so you might have seen uh screenshots or video of this fighting game that is like 3d models but like on a 2d plane and they're all like punch girl types and they're doing tag combos and shit and you might be like what what am i looking at like that uh has been

Starting point is 01:40:25 the main way people have discovered it has just been through like tweets of these combos uh some fun characters to be found in them some big old you know some girls with punches some girls with kicks and they're all uh there's some fun designs in there but yeah uh this thing in particular is like heavily tech and inspired so we took a look at it and i gotta say um it is one of the most impressive like mugen-based things i've seen because it actually like departs from that and goes into um very much its own customization so uh in fact the creator of it sent me a message saying that it is based on uh some people recreated mugen as a more open um what is it called ekman there's an engine called ekman which is open source mugen that effectively allows you to like

Starting point is 01:41:21 change way way way more about it than the original um customization options that mugen lets you go through so in this case you kind of boot it up you're getting your own late title screen you're getting there's way more uh uh uh unique things that you otherwise can't tell it's mugen right away but when you go to the settings or when you look at some of the like options as soon as you get into the versus mode you're like oh no that's that's the telltale mugen right there like it hides it a little bit better but you still see the i got a whiff of it yeah yeah i got a whiff of it i can smell it and when you look at the the files that the actual game is running game is running on same thing all the file uh names are the same types that you get

Starting point is 01:42:02 from mugen you know like air files cns files uh sffs all these things that you're you're used to you know so um yeah a tech and inspired game so you have like a large move list of like tilt forward tilt back diagonals while rising all these kinds of little inputs um and it was it came together in a pretty fun system i gotta say um i think it's gonna probably uh right now which is because it's so hard to get your hands on it because you have to subscribe to this patreon and then they have to wait and then yeah the the creator waits for the payments to clear because people used to sign up download the game and then back out and cancel and then patreon doesn't actually send the money over until the next month so they wait

Starting point is 01:42:49 so you basically i signed up in january and i have to wait until february for the payment to clear to get to play the game so full disclosure uh that's that's how the the system currently works if you do want to play it um and uh i mentioned it in the episode but the other thing uh that i want to be wary of and i want to keep an eye on this type of stuff too is like um this thing is coming along quite nicely uh ease laugh is also coming along but i will i want to like make sure that like people are aware of the like a patreon um fighting game in particular or any kind of game that's like being made in that process like there have been projects in the past where like the creators not incentivized to finish the project anytime soon so they kind of just let it rock over this extended period of time

Starting point is 01:43:42 and people are continuing to pay month to month and that sucks so you know you want to make sure that what you're signing up for something that like the creators are like actually updating the project regularly and not just deliberately slowing the process down because it's more profitable to have things take longer you know um so keep that in mind as well uh and uh yeah we we we'll take a look there's some fun this uh there's a great moitai girl that looks real cool there's a giant tam tam style ab girl that does some big old moves and and and i liked it and i enjoyed well the the punch girl fighting game quite a bit the videos i'll admit i i'm watching footage here and from your earlier description i expected more of this game to be about giving

Starting point is 01:44:35 you an erection not quite snoo snoo is present but it's not just about snoo snoo it's it's just it's just pretty much a straightforward fighting game it's there's uh the designs are what i'm describing but without a ton of like fan servicey aspects to them there's very little and by every really detailed faces yeah furia royale is the name again um and uh props to the music which from the moment you boot it up is fucking solid like really cool tracks that like uh uh if like like there's a uh a simple version of a track and then once you jump into the title screen it again it amps up a bit and then you jump into the versus mode it amps up again which is right out of my school of of of game design preferences i love when music is persistent

Starting point is 01:45:32 like that and every track that's played in the game so far in each of the stages has been super cool super solid so um yeah this game's coming along nicely man i think honestly like once people can get their hands on it you know once it's like up on steam or something and you know you can just go like oh yo check this out and like anyone can just jump on it and play um it'll it'll it'll it'll get a lot more traction you know um but it seems like they're taking their time to like do it right and like do it very deliberate hope i hope it shapes up soon but what we played so far is pretty cool you know um so that was that there was neo and uh yeah i guess the only other thing i'll mention is um punch mom and i checked out a film called the dissident

Starting point is 01:46:23 and it is by uh i believe brian fogle who was the one that did uh the film icarus which is about the uh olympics corruption scandals and and and doping and and russia and a lot of places that were cheating outright in the olympics that was the original movie icarus the dissident is about the full story of kashogi and saudi arabia and everything that happened in regards to that leading up to it the people involved as well as some of the aftermath and the effects and some of the things that are not quite as well known so uh it's a pretty um thorough breakdown of all the events and then talking to like the united nations and talking to um uh like literally like literally like like the leadership of of like turkey and then getting everyone they can involve to sort of

Starting point is 01:47:19 tell the story and uh it's really good it's it's super informative and um yeah it's one of these stories that kind of had way more shit to it going on than uh what was known at the time that we only kind of know now in retrospect and i feel as if uh it would be you know it would be a real it's a cool it would be able to it would be doing a lot more um and it would be a lot louder and well known more well known if it was on netflix but netflix decided not to carry it because of their ties to the kingdom and because of the controversy that that brings that and bridles them in and they don't want to be involved with that so they opted to deny that even though the guys last movie icarus did was one of it was like the first ox oscar nominated thing that uh

Starting point is 01:48:11 netflix got it was a humongous thing for them and he was he pretty much had carte blanche but he decided to go with this topic which is not one they wanted to touch um so the only place i believe you wonder why yeah yeah exactly uh i mean they pretty much came out directly and said it like they're like yeah no we have they have financial ties with with the kingdom so they're not going to get involved yeah they were like we i'm sorry we can't we can't publish this movie but we can publish this trailer for king of fighters and the story is it's interesting because like it is about exactly that thing too about how like effectively this entire story is one that because there's so much money involved from the kingdom they just don't want to have it get

Starting point is 01:48:59 touched people want to dodge it it's you know there's a lot of there's a lot of bullshit so it's a really good movie uh i i really recommend everyone check it out and uh documentary not movie i should say excuse me and uh i believe like yeah as as it stands because like netflix didn't uh take it you pretty much can uh you get it i think it's on youtube and on amazon uh you know as a as a like i think you can rent or buy there um and uh you know not surprising to see it on amazon actually and in fact if you you know when you go when you go into the story like because uh bezos is tied into that whole thing in a pretty uh crazy way like i remember i heard about the details of that beforehand but like he like is he's wrapped up in this whole thing so it um it's really good

Starting point is 01:49:51 you should go see it and on a personal note a lot of the story is involved and takes place in montreal canada and another it was quite nutty to see like news and things like that um just and places that we know just in the background like oh yeah that's going on right over there that's that happened right there that's that place there huh you know because uh one of the people that was being uh um uh hunted down besides uh kashogi was someone who's from montreal you know so that gets a sizable mention as well and some recent stories uh that popped up like i think a day or two ago were implying that like literally they caught like a hit squad that was trying to operate in toronto to take out another person so like it it's not even like it stopped you know um so yeah check out

Starting point is 01:50:46 the dissident if you can uh i think it's it's it's pretty fucking good tired from quarantine exhausted about the state of your life watch the dissident and discover that the world is worse than you thought it was and you know this is the type and this is this is again it's the type of story that uh would make much more it would it would be much more like you know it would be making waves if it were allowed to just be on netflix but it ain't you know so that's not allowed is and instead you guys have to hear about it on the same podcast where we talk about how to clean up dog nut there you go there you go with a towel that's how you do it but

Starting point is 01:51:43 i anticipate news on whether or not the snk purchase will go through because it's currently up in the air as far as we know we shall see uh yeah that about does it it if you would like to check out what's going on um we've got uh demon souls over on woolly versus reggie is doing his best and i believe in him uh we've got yakuza zero continuing and uh yeah right now i want to talk to you about yakuza zero okay i want to talk to you about like a dragon i i really okay um i saw a clip of that guy who pulls a gun on you to steal dragon quest from you and you like getting very upset over theme of sadness and i want more

Starting point is 01:52:52 context i need more there's a mission in yakuza zero where you are helping a kid who gets his game stolen from him by a thug who then gets his gay his stolen game stolen from him by an even bigger thug and you have to hunt them all down in this ridiculous hijinks chase them down the street and practically slipping on banana peels until eventually you get to until you eventually get to the low level yakuza guy who has robbed the bigger thug and is now basically like fuck you you're not getting this game i'll kill you and then he pulls a real gun out and shoots you and you have to defeat him and his real gun which kirian did take a bullet i did get shot once and then after you defeat him um you he explains that he's doing this to get

Starting point is 01:53:47 a copy of the game for his child and this is because he wants to be a good dad and then the sad music plays as kiryu feels bad about the fact that he was only trying to shoot you to get a copy of this game for his child yeah so what's the problem with the music so then the music kicks in and then the son and then the kid shows up and it's like oh turns out that's the dad of the original kids you're trying to help plot twist it's all okay let's just ignore the part where he pulled out the gun and shot you now admittedly he shot you in video game fight world not in yeah cutscene but he pulls the gun out before video game fight world so this and a couple other missions including the one where a bunch of dudes expressly threatened to sell a child into a pedophilia ring

Starting point is 01:54:43 and then get beat up and run away um are setting me up for some major major ethical quandaries and so i understand that we're dealing with criminals in the 80s and i understand that people roll their eyes when woolly tries to apply his world morality to things but you're gonna hear me yell about it anyway okay so fucking ridiculous i have some clarifications to make for you first of all it is criminals in the 80s however i should tell you the criminals in the 90s the aughts the tens and the 20s will act trivially less differently it doesn't matter this is forever this is the yakuza series this will happen literally actually 50 times a game because there's always 100 sub stories and half of them are always this yeah yeah now i don't fully know who cure you is yet however

Starting point is 01:55:53 i have been given the impression so far within these i don't know couple of maybe 10 hours or so i've given the i've been under the impression that he happens to have a heart of gold despite whatever else he is doing saying and or what his profession is he does in fact have a heart of gold that's why he helps that lady learn how to beat the man in front of the children correct okay so that's why when someone tries to murder someone because they have a sad kid they're trying to make happy that person shouldn't just get off the hook i'm crazy fucking so crazy thing to say so but yeah it turns out that's kind of weird i'm gonna tell you a couple things that may or may not help you or you will hate them okay i don't know how far you are in a zero but i know you've

Starting point is 01:56:48 done some heat moves okay in yakuza six there is a speech that a character gives to cure you about how the the reason why he's the greatest legend that ever was is that he's managed to do all this without ever killing one person and then 10 minutes later you are shooting down helicoptered with an rpg like literally 10 minutes later so i did a heat move as majima and i don't know if majima is is professed to have the same clean slate in fact the plot plot not quite the plot plot is sort of implying that he's making these decisions right it's going do you have what it takes and they're having their fucking their sake and it's like oh the sake tastes bad because you're here and you know and all that shit but um but there is a heat move with a knife where you

Starting point is 01:57:41 just fucking shake somebody yeah okay so shake them oh yeah there's a there's a fucking i think use two or three or whatever there's a goddamn heat move that where you pick up a syringe off the ground called mystery syringe and and and you just stab a guy in the leg with it and he died okay so did you did you die because i believe you would have died oh i didn't like it so here's the thing step one kiryu majima akiyama saijima whoever you're playing as okay is that is that fish boy nishkin what no akiyama is from four onwards oh there's you know there's there's a bunch of characters but you're gonna play as a bunch of characters over the course of the series but right now let's talk kiryu and majima because you're in zero right when a character pulls a gun

Starting point is 01:58:39 on them and they are not doing so in an expensive cutscene the character you're playing as knows they're in no danger okay okay yeah like you know you know cutscene damage like the the altar it's taken to the nth degree right in the akusa series because there's a video game gun and then there's the cheap cutscene gun yeah like x 1999 right before the fight starts a a violence barrier is resurrected is is erected around the room and all violence that takes place inside that barrier that keke genkai doesn't actually happen okay so the the difference here for almost everything else is that the character you're playing as knows that that's happening okay they are aware or not maybe they're just so badass and manly that they're really genuinely

Starting point is 01:59:43 unworried about the fist v gun fight they just had because they know that they can go down to the m cafe and get a stamina and they'll be fine right but if a masseuse gets shot in the ribs in the cutscene that's a real very important bullet very important yes it's very very upsetting all right so that's step one is is the character's acknowledgement of the cutscene rules yep the second one and this one's gonna be this is gonna be controversial some people are not going to agree with me but it's important for your understanding that you may have already interpreted this slightly and not while it looks like it and sounds like it the yakuza games do not take place in anything even close to approaching reality

Starting point is 02:00:49 the rules that we live in with our lives literally do not apply in fact they are straight up like buddhist morality fables okay okay like it is it is like the logic is purely thematic it's not like like the plot sometimes dive bombs itself for the theme and you go that doesn't make any sense but thematically it would because they saw the error of their ways or whatever the fuck it is right and so therefore yada yada it is a series of of like many moral fables and actions are non-literal actions are almost unimportant okay unless they're in an expensive cutscene okay and here's here's the rub here you going yeah whatever you literally pulled out a gun to shoot me okay that's that's

Starting point is 02:01:53 okay ha ha right or i'll forgive you even though you're gonna sell those that that family into sex slavery ha ha everybody makes mistakes um what you really need to focus in on on what the conclusion of those storylines are because the conclusions are are occasionally like night marriage they're just like and it's like you know games and politics and all that stuff like yakuza will just tell you what the developer thinks about this situation and oftentimes you'll be like seriously what the fuck really this is the takeaway i i would even say that i'm getting the impression that the conclusion like only matters in as much as it's like in some cases can we get another punch line out of the

Starting point is 02:02:52 conclusion right in some cases in some cases you have to remember that the people stop existing when you turn away this is true too i did a fucking mission where i walked into a restaurant and a chef was verbally abusing his his sous chef his his staff that's right and she she was like getting it like heart like spit in the face level of like don't you dare even talk to this animal and then after some hijinks it ended on a note of well he just he it's tough love and he really cares and he's gonna teach her to be the best chef she can be and don't worry about his assholeish ways or the fact that he treats her as a subhuman because in the end it'll all be fine it's just it's just the rough edges you know there is a ongoing almost laughably naive view

Starting point is 02:03:55 of redemption in the yakuza series that is the it is everything that you ever complained about times a million okay and yeah okay all right uh and it's it's like it's built in and it's it really is of the belief that anybody can turn it around yeah no matter what now one thing you should watch out for except for a dead body but go on one thing sometimes dude so you don't know that you don't know that there's people that they'll they'll they'll turn around dead body or not um what's more interesting than that is that in a series and fiction that is like in love with redemption you'll run into characters that the game makes no effort to redeem at all okay and that's awesome i expect this yeah like what it's rare but when they make zero attempt

Starting point is 02:04:58 at all and then they just kind of die or whatever the game is telling you all that other shit was okay but this guy no not this guy so the ones who don't get the attempt at redemption are a minority they are a minority and the ones who don't even get attempt at redemption they get it real bad gotcha all right fair enough now speaking of expensive cutscenes how fucking sick is awano's suit god damn that thing is cash it is so fucking nice it's the purple suit with the with the the texture on it and he's just exuding the essence of the rawest fucking thug you've ever felt and oh you're gonna love that guy and apparently uh the suit was originally supposed to be yellow but the actor said no no make it purple because that's what the smell

Starting point is 02:06:08 of the era was at the time yeah purple was the smell of the era of that actor is a comedian so it was it was shocking to see him turn into a good dramatic role god damn he's silvio he's fucking silvio it's great powerful that dude's totally gonna be your favorite character i'm just saying i mean well right now it's a toss-up between him and pocket circuit fighter so we're gonna have to see we're gonna have to see woolly so you actually like pocket circuit right pocket circuit rolls it's okay so i hate pocket circuit it's so much fun i hate it i hate it i don't like it i don't like it oh catch it if you like pocket circuit fighter there's some value for you in the future because that mini game just kind of refuses to die long live pocket circuit

Starting point is 02:07:10 i'm all in i'm all in of all the mini games that one has fucking gripped my soul dude i love it and shogi i like shogi but that the everything surrounding it is fucking is a is a master stroke yep yep in there though every single one of those games has at least one mini game that's every single person goes oh man like i remember yakuza 3 had like an incredible golf game in it like it was just a legitimately fantastic sega arcade golf game i did actually play mahjong i did actually start learning the rules and i played a couple games of mahjong and i did very very poorly but i did understand a bit of what was happening and i would say that the biggest problem with mahjong is like simply recognizing the tiles

Starting point is 02:08:13 like if there wasn't a struggle to recognize the tiles on their face for what they are north south east west wind you know the dragons have the colors so that's not as bad but some of them are just and then the count of the numbers you know your basic pieces from two to eight or whatever like the recognition is the number one problem with getting into the game shogi puts a little letter in the corner of the tile so that you can actually see like um um chess piece names and make sense of it you know in this case it's like you're basically like hey well memorize a couple kanji you know um and and yeah it's doable but i also generally like i said i prefer the um the the chess like to the poker like you know

Starting point is 02:09:05 let me ask you you wanted to ask me about like a dragon yes something yes what did you want okay uh so i i'll just throw this out there i guess because it's i'm currently trying to figure out what to do here but um i have been contacted about doing something officially in regards to that game and it would be weird to jump in in the middle of what i'm doing right now and it would be also weird to possibly jump from zero straight to this thing just to take a look but if it were just to take a look for a couple sessions perhaps would that be weird no would it be fine absolutely not yeah totally okay um the also yakuza seven i talked about this when i was going through it seven

Starting point is 02:10:05 spends most of its running time ichiban was in jail for a long time and he missed the whole yakuza series okay okay so he is it's doing that thing where he's ignorant so new players can get in okay and be like i don't know uh and they i would say yeah unless you're getting to like 80 90 through that game yeah you're good okay and then second is like yeah again like if i were to do like you know a couple hours in through the intro segment that wouldn't be too weird oh no you wouldn't get like plot wise you wouldn't get anywhere you would never even hear of the old characters okay all right then i think that makes sense then um it'll probably be uh a little odd for folks who are like hey well where'd that go

Starting point is 02:11:03 you know after a couple of sessions of like but i know what you're thinking they're they're not gonna fucking load up ichiban i'm like oh you're going to jail huh it was crazy how majima went to jail and died right right right yeah okay they don't they're not they're not gonna do that okay good all right good i appreciate that um yeah so then i guess i'll just have to make it really clear um that to anybody hearing once i once i do that that it's like hey this is not the full lp uh but it is a you know a checking out for a period uh based on you know this being uh an official deal so all right cool um work that out then thank god it's fucking a soft reboot then like that makes a lot more that works a lot better and then by the end it becomes a full reboot there it's like

Starting point is 02:12:00 it's your bond story will sail off into the future and we're clearly gonna hang out with him uh they seem to be going aiming towards like a like kind of a double reboot where like the judgment games will also continue with you got me um so uh anyway yeah so basically then the uh what was i saying oh yeah that's on the channels we got uh demon souls we got yeah cuz uh uh and that like yeah i'm your you know i'll i'm gonna take what you said to heart and use it as preparation but i'm they they just the game i i prepare myself for that type of stuff and then the session i come back they're like let's do a fucking bdsms like goofy mission and that's fine and then

Starting point is 02:12:57 children get dropped into the scene and you just you just fucking recoil in horror so i'm like i can't quite anticipate where the punches are coming from anymore in yak is a zero but uh it continues that let it he's dressed funny yeah why is he just like that mr i'm you know i've been hearing so much and i've been trying to like get ready to guard and it's just i'm getting rabbit punched behind the fucking head it's it's kind of incredible because there are like 14 different yakuza games and if we count the good ones let's say there's like eight 900 side quests and the ones in yakuza one are kind of all terrible so let's just say 800 side quests most of them are fucking great and they go in every possible direction and every game i'm like oh man i wonder if we're just

Starting point is 02:13:54 gonna do a retread of uh no there's they're all crazy someone just described it as a comedy manga and that makes perfect sense they're using 3d models so they can't turn into little shibi four coma versions of themselves but they absolutely would be because the logic of that world is what this is what's happening yep yep totally totally like let me i believe that like there's a there's a fucking screenshot that was going around for a yakuza sevens thing where it's just a fucking uh ichiban standing next to a monkey with like a bunch of shit burning down behind him and a guy going thank god you two saved the day yeah yeah so that the great great that that continues um uh yes uh though um so this week uh

Starting point is 02:35:41 six days in felucia is back in the spotlight it is uncancelled it is now coming out and um for those of you who did not hear about this i want to say maybe 10 years ago they announced a game called six days in felucia based on um the military intervention that took place there and uh how things went down and it was uh canceled really quickly because from what i real fast it was basically a matter of uh one too soon and two um yeah not enough i don't i think there weren't actually people that were like involved in the telling of the story they kind of just were looking it seemed like they were kind of just looking to make a shooty bang shoot bang out of a real there's a bunch of family members of uh passed away soldiers that were like

Starting point is 02:36:40 campaigning against it as well yes so um that that happened and it's and i remember when i heard about that and i was like that's interesting so now that it's back it's been some time and i guess you know uh based on the trailer for it it looks like they've gotten uh the uh soldiers more involved in in the storytelling because that's kind of like the perspective that's the trailers being told from and so when i saw that the first thing i thought was i'm gonna uh message my cousin who was in felucia who did two tours and ask him how he feels about all of this and um he kind of just honestly just replied like yeah um seem he like he kind of just said like it looks like they're doing it from um uh the marine's perspective uh but he on but like really

Starting point is 02:37:43 he kind of just as he really just went into like how like fucked up the whole thing was and how um literally he was like like they were picking up bodies left and right for this entire thing and and how um when he got back home a lot of the people that uh came back with him did not survive much longer after that and how fucking just crazy fucked up story so um you know and i kind of i kind of just you know was like okay so and i kind of just you know came back and was mentioning the the the the thing with this game and and how like you know initially like yeah it kind of just came out and people didn't know people were not too happy about the the idea of cashing in on something in this way so um now that they have people who have been through it with their perspective on

Starting point is 02:38:35 i guess the question remains is just like how is this going to be handled and what is the answer is like shit the how's this going to be handled and execution and will it be done respectfully and such and then of course there's um are you going to avoid are you going to tell this story in this medium and avoid uh what i would call gamification of like recent like no you know um so then uh with that and i and with the memory of again like i'm my cousin telling the stories of like what it's like to fucking just be in there and go through that it is like yeah you better please do a fucking decent job by this and now the story headline i've gotten here is um six days in felucia not trying to make a political commentary says the creator

Starting point is 02:39:37 the lead guy behind the apolitical iraq war video game donating to a major republican fundraiser endorsed by the rnc tells me everything i need to okay based on the public record of his recent contribution i'm sure he intends to do that okay so this is all right this is a poll this is a political donation thing that's not uh us army is helping with this game as well we are looking for this article where the fuck is it you're looking for the polygon article there we go um i can quote that right now yes in an interview with polygon on thursday after the game was announced for a second time he was insistent this is the developer that the developer highwire games will not grapple with the political machinations that

Starting point is 02:40:24 led to the particular conflict instead their first person shooter will try to engender empathy for american troops in the field for their work destroying the insurgents that dug in through felucia and for the civilians trapped in in between i think reasonable people can disagree with that he told polygon of his narrative strategy for us as a team it really is about helping the players understand the complexity of urban combat it's about the experiences of that individual that is now there because of political decisions we are and we do want to show how choices that are made by policymakers affect the choices that a marine needs to make on the battlefield just as that marine cannot second guess the choices by the policymakers we're not

Starting point is 02:41:06 going to make political commentary about whether or not the war itself was a good or bad idea so david caging except at least the david cage situation had the decency of being a fictional event or ubi soft with the division again a fictional event although not a fictional ronald reagan uh later on and and and and such but um yeah i don't even know where to start like i legit don't even know where to start like you you it went away and then came back and you would kind of think that they would have thought through how to do these types of interviews or how to even approach this without saying that this is not a political commentary when it is impossible to dive into something like this and not have some form of commentary

Starting point is 02:42:11 i like i i don't even want to get into that because that's so obvious i feel like we can't even like go into it because it's so like we'll be here all day i think the funniest part about this is that in the quote from the dev they literally make multiple political statements the most incredible of which is that the people in the armed forces cannot second guess the decisions that lead them to be deployed in a war that's wild yeah uh i didn't think this was going to come back around the second time i kind of thought it got canceled and the reasons they gave at the time were something about sensitivity and then they kind of that let it sit and that was that that that defense the the the literal

Starting point is 02:43:19 that quote in this is the nerman the nuremberg defense which is the most just following orders i can't i can't decide what to do for myself my ceo told me to do it i gotta do it like i don't want to get into a big rigmarole about how fucked up the battle fallujah was but i do think to say that we're not making a political game and then say that your primary goal is to create empathy for one side of that armed conflict a side that was demonstrably in many cases very badly behaved is fucking grotesque it's fucking grotesque and to sit there and go oh it's not about anything like go to hell you liar and again it's the second time around you know it's the second it's the second war wasn't even

Starting point is 02:44:26 technically over when the development started on the last time yeah like i remember i remember a couple years before uh six days of lucia we we were going through a fucking thing about a medal of honor rising sun being released in japan and how fucking weird that was because it was the first war game that really like first big popular big budget war game that dealt with the pacific theater and it actually got released in japan which was incredibly bizarre for many japanese people who played that game he's also not interested in portraying the alleged atrocities that may have been committed there oh okay so let me describe the first procedure is tactical that's yeah if i if i put out a

Starting point is 02:45:28 fucking documentary about john wane gasey's fucking clowning career and then at the end there's a footnote that says and he kills some people too i guess right i think my stance is pretty clear that i care more for the art of the clown than anything else also a legend i'm looking at a video white phosphorus on my tv right now it's got a wiki article so the only difference i suppose between when this first was announced and now is that now uh there is the military twitch uh channel that that uh exists and regularly streams and i imagine this will be streamed at some point oh man so that's that's the hell this is this is the wildest shit ever this is like full this is

Starting point is 02:46:54 we're in a brave fucking new world where they're making fucking video games that are just straight up like denial of war crimes like the last one that happened was that fucking call a duty game what the which one was it the one that took oh god it was not the last one of the one before in which they they referenced like the fucking highway of death which was oh man the russians are blowing up everybody on this highway it's like no actually that was the us that did that in that time period you just kind of you kind of did a whoopsy there well it was modern warfare 2019 fucking if you recreate an event in 3d and then put a camera in place and then make a game occur or in this location you you have to depict things and anything you don't depict was your

Starting point is 02:47:57 intentional decision to ignore a documentary has the um it has its editing but ultimately it's filming a live event in this case you are recreating everything and then choosing how to show and depict all of that yourself um if you do that which you have the choice to do uh yeah at least have the fucking responsibility to own up to that and acknowledge what you're doing but obviously that's not going to play nice with um with with uh who's even publishing this not konami i i was about to even say i was gonna yeah no they dropped it uh i didn't you know i couldn't drop it fast enough who's publishing it now i want to watch it be like literally the us military

Starting point is 03:03:39 the top yeah i thought like or leto whatever i thought he was um the one that was meming and that the trailer was just a trailer or whatever now in it i mean look man after that whole thing with Suicide Squad and then you know like they cut his part out and this is that and extra mad because you know Joaquin Phoenix i'm surprised like he came back for this oh he is convinced that his joker is like the greatest joker of all time and the only reason people didn't like him in Suicide Squad is because they didn't see his whole performance when it's like dude i saw i knew you were trash from the second you showed up on the screen well well now that he's been repaired and he no longer has the the tats or the look or the the aesthetic and uh

Starting point is 03:18:23 like a lightning sword it seems cool i don't know where all the naruto characters i have no idea where the naruto characters went it's kind of weird it's kind of weird how they just you know but i i mean look dude i haven't been keeping up with boruto you haven't been keeping up with boruto so that's true i haven't i'm pretty sure it all this is what's going on in boruto right now yeah you know i i thought it was really weird when they swapped out all the boruto characters for a bunch of like like weird american hero characters and then swap them all back in for boruto characters again okay now now now to be fair to kill the kill and to my hero academia both of those arena fighter anime games like do have a different like physics feel to them

Starting point is 03:21:20 yeah dude it's anime games which if you like if you like ultimate ninja storm is great news anime games have fallen into a real fucking just mess with this shit it it is like barring let's say a different seasoning in the kill a kill or the the what do you call it the hero academy game like calling it a genre i don't think it's fair because genre implies a certain variety within its conventions these are like to to a casual observer if you took out the recognizable characters these would be indistinguishable from each other it's too hard to try more so like just do this because it's a shonen there are characters that will do the fighting yeah and we can make it quick and easy and the distinctions that actually like

Starting point is 03:22:29 hit system-wide that are unique get lost in the wash um the the arena fighter thing is very fast and easy to make so why the fuck have a have a have a like it's more effort put into it if you can cash in real quick it's just so fucking wild because we have let's take koi tecmo right we're just talking about neo right but koi tecmo makes a lot of licensed anime games right they make a lot of licensed games in general with licenses that aren't theirs and they are the people behind the warrior series one of the most ridiculed samy series ever and even koi tecmo puts a fucking distinction of between games they give a shit about and games they clearly don't hyrule warriors berserk p5 strikers that fucking kamen rider game you know like just

Starting point is 03:23:32 right but these anime arena fighters are just literally all the same so hey dragon ball gets the has you know has the decency i suppose to like it turns out a dragon ball game pretty much almost annually if not every two at this point and that doesn't stop but at some point they said you know what let's let's try let's let's try to make we made xeno verse xeno verse two that's still there and we're about to make kakarot and you know we'll keep doing what we do it makes money it's fine but they they they for a brief moment went here try something at arcsis just here you go um i appreciate that effort same thing for grand blue fantasy as a franchise i fucking had no uh a knowledge of prior they went like let's

Starting point is 03:27:29 it's quick and easy man oh it's just the same again yeah you don't have to worry about it you don't have to worry about it like i would love for one of these to come out and be great but they're all just good enough to not be complete garbage because they put all the character dude i just i just looked up fucking jump victory versus and i just got the ign fucking uh uh you know the breakdown at the end mediocre the pros tons of characters cons bad visuals samey characters lazy story shallow combat okay so uh that's like what if i had told what i had been told you what game i was talking about could you tell no what if i were to propose to you that uh the effort and the roster size and exactly how much is put into

Starting point is 03:28:32 it is reflective of how long the average fan is going to care about the game until oh absolutely a hundred percent so if they're gonna walk all the characters and then drop it in two three weeks then why even try harder they're gonna they're gonna they're gonna uh i just it hurts me to say it out my mouth but it is three or four times it is every variation of every super uh they're gonna play online a couple times then be like oh this sucks everyone's you're out and they're never gonna play it again and then we're out you know um how long did it take to unlock everything in decidia oh which one the first one a lot it took a while it was it was a good it was a good bit it wasn't like crazy but it was like you'd like do most of the story mode and the story mode was good

Starting point is 03:29:33 okay okay it was and also decidia plays like i think decidia actually plays really well and it kind of bums me out that that's shit is dead because did did the unlocking out last the interest no okay there was tons of interest after the unlock okay okay that game was legitimately tons of fun to play so it can be done yeah but yeah there was hmm but why bother but why bother in two weeks time it's going back on the shelf slash getting deleted for hard drive space i want to fucking throw whoever like it's a toy came up with every single idea behind decidia and t at a window decidia and t like literally killed cd and t is that fucking 3v3 arcade game they put on the other one the third one after duodesum yeah the the fucking trash one that killed the series

Starting point is 03:30:45 and everyone hates and like there are so few people playing online that like you have to play with ai partners that will lose the fight for you so um good example brought up here gundam x versus the maxi boost m bond as we talked about in the past uh all all ridiculous titles aside is a legitimately tight and fun uh a system that i believe they got refined over the course of some fucking maybe eight ten games or so and then eventually they got it to where it's at where it's pretty good it's pretty tight well balanced lots of fun to be had in that style of play uh the the benefit that nuns gets is that that too is hey yeah it's not it's nuns that's what it is nuns is the end of the you know the uh Naruto met hero like series of games so it did get

Starting point is 03:31:58 more refined than again say kill a kill or um my hero and shit like that uh but it still ends up being a pick up a see the supers and a put down and there's just not much else to it um some people stick around and go more in depth than that i know there is literally like people that like go hard because i stood by while a zeno verse two tournament took place at the new york comic con i watched it happen in front of me people go in you know it is what it is but um yeah it's just it's it's just a surefire way to cash in get some cat get some money and and you know this is a new hot anime that has really nice animation and it doesn't have a game yet so you do this you get anybody who wants to fucking jump in to you know touch on that and then

Starting point is 03:32:51 you know maybe sometime later if it picks up you make another game that's actually you know uh doing its own thing but but will they but who know depends on what the reskin sells if if if this uh steam workshop reskin oh man of of uh of nuns ends up making some cash then then it'll it'll probably uh like you know it'll probably like i genuinely feel like like koei tecmo deserves like a little bit of a pat on the back like when they get the license properties that they put the time into like the zelda games or like persona like they really go for it and they make really good games in that style that i kind of hate but i like these ones turns out i just hate dynasty worries um but like i'm like now more excited for muso games getting announced

Starting point is 03:35:04 the other day uh but um yeah they they they they went for it they went for it shiny works man a lot of people really like the shiny you know what's crazy to actually come to think of it is is if you want a quote unquote real um fighting game out of an anime franchise you've got to go look at the handheld ds games yeah a lot of those are the ones that get that actual fighting sorry good bleach dark soul each game dark soul pretty good the budakai game that came out prior to fighters uh you know there was again i want to say a um i want to say flame of reka had a fighter uh i want to say there was some jump well jump superstars was more of a smash

Starting point is 03:50:20 it's being affectionately called the ex-backdash because effect because that's what it is and to not go down the jargon hole it is essentially a way of like backdashing out of pressure for the cost of a little bit of meter there and then you can it's an incredibly powerful defensive option for everybody so anytime in the game someone is like bullying bullying you by making you block a lot of attacks you can now just get the fuck out and not have to deal with it and if you time it really good it like even gives you more stuff you get a bigger benefit so it's it's huge it also happens to look really cool in effect because it looks like your slow motion dodging like an attack so it's a it's a dynamic thing on top of

Starting point is 03:51:16 that that uh it's pretty fancy so that's that's big that's big for the game you know that's maybe i'm a negative person maybe i'm a pessimist because v-shift looks cool it looks pretty cool and look that's a that's a genuine change s f5 will be a different game pre and post right and i look at that and i see man it's gonna be a long time before street fighter six comes out huh because they just re-released s f5 as a new game uh he just said hey guys don't worry s brand new game so they showed off some rose and they showed off some dan both of which are uh you know pretty pretty cool how they're handling it i feel like this season of characters is uh it's like it's one of the good seasons quote unquote or at the very least it's like one of the

Starting point is 03:52:12 good characters because sometimes you get a mixed bag but these are some some characters in the previous seasons got more love than others and in this case it feels as if they're they're doing them right so rose is similar to the way she used to be but you know better new stuff and um her stage looks good all in all if you're a rose player you should be pretty happy they toned down what used to be really nutty about her they basically like um there used to be a thing she could do where she could summon like two floating fireballs that do a circle around her so if you get next to her you get touched and uh opened up and then she had a like her shoryuken could kind of like grab you out of the air and then slam you back down right so she used to be able to do that and

Starting point is 03:53:01 then drop down and either be on the left or right of you and like you couldn't tell which side she was going to drop down on and so you'd have to guess and it was a really really good unintended usage of that shoryuken style move she had so they got rid of that now and they made her new like shoryuken style move is just her she throws her scarf up in the air so she doesn't physically jump up and then down so they can't do that mix up anymore but to make up for it they gave her like a doll some style teleport but it's a little more controlled and tame you know um so there's that uh dan has his taunt is they showed off how to how it works so his v skill is his taunt obviously and his second v skill is it's also a taunt and the way it works is it's so fucking smart

Starting point is 03:53:48 it's fun uh when he taunts he builds up his v meter and your v meter so he builds up both of you guys meters at the same time and you can do it so you can punch cancel the punch into a taunt the taunt can then be cancelled into another punch or another attack yeah it looks really good as long as you taunt between your attacks you can extend them and do longer combos that you otherwise couldn't do right which makes dan do some cool shit which is uh there's a like one of the things he could do in Street Fighter 4 was like a super super taunt cancel into ultra type of thing so um basically it's a version of this that's being homaged in a way but what's fun about it is if he punches you and then cancels it into his taunt and you block it

Starting point is 03:54:38 he's fucking dead so dan it's dan yes but this is what it means dan is a real character as long as you are real if you're fake then dan is fake and he's a joke and he gets crushed but if you're good i like that and you land your hits properly and you he's real he's a threat you know he's reflective of whoever is playing him it's good shit i like that i think it says a lot about sf5 when one of the most hyped things you can do is spend meter to back dash that's a kind of check i mean you know some of those like those that game like offense ruled the day like bullies would just take you to the corner and that was the end of it go you know if you watch the state that the the game kind of uh ended in most recently it was one where defense was still

Starting point is 03:55:41 like rough you know you had very little options you just had to guess a couple times and if not you die so this turns the whole thing around uh yeah and then i mentioned it on twitter but nakali seems to be getting a complete rework he no longer um goes super saiyan for the whole fight he goes super saiyan temporarily so we'll have to see what that means what they change about it you know um yeah yeah so sf5 is is is still getting its changes and then of course there's guilty get strife which uh they released some match footage of all the beta characters now and um i made reference to it earlier but uh geovana is cool snk style suited up girl with her dogger and they're a rad pair on design and i was hoping to see some stuff that would

Starting point is 03:56:40 emphasize their design you know not necessarily the same as like zato one or like carl clover or something but anything that was like unique about having a dog you know uh poppy whatever it seems like now that we've seen her move list she just kind of does some kicks she does a cannon drill like cammy she does a roundhouse and she does like a split axe kick and a cartwheel and like that's about it um there's nothing particularly special or unique about the dog or the way it's implemented and it kind of like she just wears it like a scarf and it kind of and it kind of becomes the energy around her body and at one point it because like she becomes green like she hulk it's i don't know what that is in one of her supers but i was kind of like

Starting point is 03:57:31 hoping for more dog action and i was i was a bit bummed that that she doesn't do anything i've been trying to tell you about dog action all podcasts you didn't want to hear it no no not quite you all heard him say it you all heard him say it at at at bare minimum i was like hoping that maybe she would have like a way to make like the dog attack like maybe like a half second after she does an attack or something and you know like find a way to just have both of them on screen doing things you know they split apart for her super and then they come back together but it's just a scarf you know so yeah she still looks really cool it's just a a move uh uh uh i guess failure you know move list failure uh in the complete opposite effect nago ryuki the black vampire samurai

Starting point is 03:58:27 is the most ridiculous concept character in the game so far easily he's got all sorts of shit going on he makes no fundamental sense from a fighting game like perspective of like is this really what we're doing here they they made him a giant that cannot air dash in a game where air dashing is a big deal right it's the genre is called air dashers he can't do that he can teleport like slayer but at a cost he has a blood rage meter and every time he does one of his fancy sword swipes or one of his fancy teleports or ghost attacks he builds that blood rage meter up when it builds up to three he loses control and the mask comes off and then his sword gets

Starting point is 03:59:30 full up with blood and he can and then he starts draining health super fast and he can swing the sword and do a lot of damage whether you're hitting or blocking he can do a super that's insanely damaging like a samurai showdown style and he becomes a very scary character but he can't do any of his special moves and his health is draining at a rate of I would say it would probably take 10 seconds to get from full health to zero so it's Pandora in Street Fighter Cross Tekken a little bit sacrifice your partner for time on the clock right that era of like your life bar just starts draining this is what happens to him so if you don't win or cancel what you've done in the next 10 seconds you're dead that's the end

Starting point is 04:00:22 of that fucking round he has a way to get out of it by letting the bar drain completely or by doing a giant powerful super which both stop the life drain and when he he has a command grab as well that bites you and sucks some blood when he gets a little bit of healing and he drops some of the rage you know but people know what you're going to try to do it's now telegraphed that if I don't bite you right now I'm gonna fucking lose so there's this moment where the mask comes off and it's like I have the next 10 seconds to find a way to destroy you or this is everything you know he's an all or nothing gamble and I fucking I can't believe that's what they went with I'm I'm gonna I'm learning him I'm gonna play him we'll

Starting point is 04:01:19 find out you know if if like I've had a history of like picking a character just based on my my aesthetics and then sticking with them either way uh it's not foolproof sometimes I hit a wall and I just have to back down but if I can avoid it uh I try to stick with the character viper go fuck yourself no one's doing that I can't my fingers can't do it I like your suit I like your style but I can't do trial 10 so we're just gonna leave you alone um but yeah Nagaruki is the complete opposite of Giovanna and she's the most like bog standard fighting game character style even though her her her her design has more going on but he just has like the most wacky nonsense mechanics and and I I don't know how it's gonna be fair I think he might he might be the

Starting point is 04:02:15 best or worst and that's it he's either top or bottom depending on your mood yeah he's he's either the best or worst character in the game free that's that's like there's there's no in between on what I what I see is like so his in the blood mode his normals get a lot of crazy chip so that's cool but it's just like I feel like this character is like just built to die yeah if I run away from you while you're in blood rage mode and you can't touch me then I'm just gonna die then guess I'll die you know hmm it's it seems like a flaw in that people that uh if you don't combo into everything you're doing and make sure it's guaranteed it feels as if playing a game of cat and mouse is not gonna work out because anytime there's a cat and mouse mechanic in a

Starting point is 04:03:15 game where someone becomes a god for 10 seconds the answer is yeah I'm not fighting you I'm not playing the game for the next 10 seconds I'll catch you on the flip side except in this case the flip side is literally you're dead yeah it's why dark phoenix like worked because the waiter out was I'm I'm gonna become a god until you die mm-hmm mm-hmm it's dark dark phoenix totally that's the other analogy that's the other analogous example uh can't wait can't wait the damage is so high that maybe it'll be worth it I don't know we'll have to find out yeah but then then if you like if there's a solution about saying a character like that is like we'll just keep buffing the damage until it's worth it I'm like doesn't this character just

Starting point is 04:04:01 become a fucking coin flip yeah no it does and that to me wouldn't be the solution necessarily they would have to like think a little bit harder about his system you know because you can't you can't air dash you move slowly and when you do his really fast movement it builds that blood and once you've built that blood meter he can't dash anymore or and you know what I mean like that's a special move which is taken away from him he loses the ability to do all special moves when he's in blood rage the only thing he can do is the big bloody normals and then his his big super so I just I don't know I don't know what to make of it you know anyway um there's characters like Mira and killer instinct who lose life but then gain it back by playing the vampire game with

Starting point is 04:04:54 you so they sacrifice health to do moves and then at the end of their combo they bite you and get it back so it's a risk but it's there you know he doesn't seem to have recovery of life baked into the game plan it seems they just kind of want you to fucking do it you know we'll find out we'll find out um that's what's happening with guilty gear and uh help guilty gear is good it looks good I hope it's netcode it's good it's confirmed for rollback baby that didn't answer my questions yeah true there can be bad rollback but I hope so too I've been playing arc um I've been playing a uh uh accent core plus our rollback uh a bit this week and I mean I'm I'm hopeful that they know how to do it they've demonstrated seeing people talk about how the beta doesn't support ps4 sticks

Starting point is 04:05:54 uh is that confirmed saw buttons complaining about it uh hmm you know what I'll confirm tomorrow if that's yeah confirmed forever one but that might not I don't know if that's true I don't want to have to buy a ps5 stick but I guess I will so the sticks I got recently that were advertised as ps5 sticks essentially were just ps4 sticks that worked when I plugged them in so I think ps4 sticks are going to overall be fine I think the problem I was having was specific to my obsidian because I got two obsidians right behind me oh did you did you you got them yeah I've had them for years okay well if you if you um boot up anything oh wow conba's got a new pearl I've never seen this one that looks nice the white one

Starting point is 04:07:08 yeah yeah that's the that's what I got so I got two of those and uh they were advertised as ps5 you know good to go so uh when I got it I took a look the the mark the packaging didn't didn't expressly say that but I booted up website says the ps4 ps3 pc compatible for pearls well when I the side I ordered it from mentioned ps5 as well when I got it booted up dragon ball went for it and I uh wasn't having any of the issues I mentioned earlier so I believe my issue was specific to my my my old obsidian and that these uh would be fine man the dragon's cool but it's too big it's I it is it is too big but if you're not going anywhere for a while it's comfy like I got used to it I in fact the only reason why it's too big for me the only reason why I stopped

Starting point is 04:08:16 using the dragon is because it was it broke my stick broke on it the the the literal joystick on it stopped working and um you know traveling with it was a pain in the ass but it was fucking comfortable to have a big hefty weight on your lap and just sturdy you know like it was the most sturdy shit ever and I understand because I remember like old school players would come out to meetups with their custom made heavy sticks that would be sitting on the floor and then they'd get a chair and sit behind it you know and that was like yeah anyone who was wanted that arcade feeling of like nothing's gonna move in my lap I want this hefty boy uh the dragon is really good at that but um eventually I did ditch it for an obsidian which is heavy enough

Starting point is 04:09:05 while still being portable but the dragon so yeah it was it was you know you you do get used to it anyway um last little bit there on the fighting game stuff is they're having a publisher round table part two on oh I hope it's better than the last one February 21st I hope so as well uh won't be well depends on what the topics are going to be but it's happening on Sunday upcoming from the looks of it they're going to have three reps from arc system works so dice gay is going to be there mori from blaze blue um as well as uh akira katano from uh strife um akira nishitani is going to be there uh so that's you know fexel harada um is in capcom is going to have their street fighter guys in matsumoto who took over and

Starting point is 04:10:07 uh takayuki nakayama snk is going to have oda and there's going to be an e-sports guy yasuda e-sports is going to be there too is there going to be anyone there from sega the ghosts might still be in the room there's an e-sports guy virtual fighter cross e-sports we are we are literally never going to hear about that virtual fighter e-sports thing are we well yasuda e-sports will be there and he is listed as an e-sports producer but he works for bandai namco so no you're not like we're literally not even going to find out what it was supposed to be they dug it up to bury it harder can't they just port it to the new system like just port

Starting point is 04:25:28 is to create a tcg to give power up pieces to a game of chess um what would you create and give some examples what wacky stuff would you do to that so i'm gonna override an object to the basis of the question here because it's asking about improving chess which there's no need to do because serlan has already released chess too so we don't have to ever do that people and and not only that but uh a game called i believe 5d chess is the name of the actual game exists where you're playing chess across multiple dimensions and time and moves have to be controlled in alternate realities and you literally like switchboards to different realities to play a massive macro meta game of 5d chess this exists this is a real game that you can go look up

Starting point is 04:27:26 fucking dumb sometime i like the games and i've had fun yomi's a great card game it's very cool you hush or don't uh chess too was a thing 5d chess was a thing and uh i would also like to mention as i've recently discovered shogi is also a feeling of modified chess in ways historically i don't know what fucking comes first but it does feel like if you had to look at both game styles like it feels like shogi has steps up above chess in that like they they did change rules by making you improve and promote pieces and able and allowing you to use captured pieces as well um so you know a pawn can can level up to become a king and no not a full king but rather a general which is a different kind of unit so yeah i don't know i feel like shogi kind of

Starting point is 04:28:36 does that too so there's a couple of different examples of like chess to shogi being like chess new game plus exactly and then um uh 5d chess the people have already improved on chess quite a bit and even if they didn't there's always space chess which was a dos game that i had on my 386 where it was chess with uh special sci-fi pieces that would like shoot lasers at each other to fight i think that this is all based off of earlier this week uh this lady put out some tweets of some nightmare chess variants that were all horrible they were all like literally the worst thing you have ever seen and they were fucking fascinating did you see that that series of tweets i didn't okay so step well oh man love it chess very because they were incredible excuse me battle

Starting point is 04:29:39 chess yeah they were incredible one was uh god of the ones that i remember i think there's only two i can remember clearly one was you know when you see a vertical chess board like you know the top to bottom yeah it was you play chess but all the all the goddamn pieces have gravity and fall down to the bottom of the board after you play them but can you play a functional game maybe because if step one is you cannot play a functional game i immediately don't care it has to it has to what about uh what about suicide chess which is probably my favorite of all the variants that i saw which was it's the exact same game as regular chess except control of the kings is swapped sure sure i love it um now i know

Starting point is 04:30:41 there's a mario chess set but i feel like i saw someone with a custom glass version that was like all high detailed uh glass versions of the the normal mario chess set and i remember i don't know if it was just a render or if it was like real but it looked fucking cool and i was like damn i would actually get that because mario chess is already pretty like it's pretty cool you know they got the uh the good guys and the bad guys as their two respective sides louis g's the queen as you do but um i found it you found the glass one no fuck you i found the variants oh okay uh this was from uh elizabeth sampat who oh man there's so many of these

Starting point is 04:31:35 hoppy chess which swaps the abilities of knights and pawns lifting chess this is just chess but the pieces are very heavy pawns weigh 10 pounds kings weigh 60 nice you cannot move pieces unless you can lift it nice you have to pick up the opponent's king to checkmate chaos chess you choose a color king to defeat but control all pieces of both colors on the right or left side of the board wow you ever play a game of chess right with the clock

Starting point is 04:33:01 uh yes and lastly um we got one here coming in from uh uh matthew who says hello horrible legal team at least i recently yeah remembered early discussions about uh japanese companies refusing to adapt to things like rollback and while i agree part of it is is some weird stubbornness i learned something that might also be part of the problem there's a type of software license called the gnu general public license any code that's gpl can be freely shared copied or modified but using it requires you to make your code freely available as well so for example if copcom used any open source code for their

Starting point is 04:33:48 rollback they would have to release the source code for their entire game this means fixing the rollback net code has to be built from scratch or they have to acquire code under a different type of license hmm so okay so release it now ggpo does not do that because ggpo gives it away freely and doesn't require people to open up the source code of their games and release that for sure 100 positive the ggpo doesn't require that so uh i don't think this applies it's an interesting hypothetical but um we know that ggpo is allowed to be used and people can keep their source code private specifically it's been done in in commercial it's just stubbornness it's just stubborn yeah so nice guess but i i i don't see any evidence of that and if you're not referring to ggpo then
