Starting point is 00:00:00 a we are going and and we're started we're live we're going your constant your face of consternation is I don't know what the first thing I want to say is I have an idea let's just go chat Babylon's fall hmm the peak players concurring last 30 days is 307 mm-hmm yesterday it had it had 62 people yes wait that's Monday that's today who it had it had a peak today of 78 people okay now how many of those people are content creators getting content um maybe about a hundred of them okay well oh we got it we got up to date we got 38 playing 45 minutes ago
Starting point is 00:01:54 compared to an all-time steam peak of 1166 mmm that's that's like the meanest number of all I love love a good news Monday a good content podcast Monday you know as you described it this one in particular has a a weird personal edge um before we continue I have a question for you Willie do you ever play any of the classic Call of Duty games in multiplayer you ever see that screen no any of that I did I know you played the halo but they were later right yeah so one of the cool things that they would do is that it would just surface how many people were online at any given time playing the game right there on the
Starting point is 00:02:50 main menu as a point of pride because they knew because they knew mm-hmm yeah no the the current way you got to find out via steam spy you know for one platform is far from a point of pride you have to you have to go scurrying through the data that most of the time they'd probably rather have hidden from you um yeah so so Babylon's fall the product of Square Enix in particular coming along midway through the development of a game and essentially turning it into something else in the hopes that it's ability to become a live service game
Starting point is 00:03:42 would make it more profitable than just delivering a solid fun action game which appears to be what was the original version that when we broke the story and talked with broke the story when we talked about it we discussed how yeah I had seen many games go through that that discussion process or at the very least get pushed in that direction because that was a high priority at the time for every product and every property and every IP that Square Enix had influence over gas it up that would include not just all the screenix titles but of course their direct ownership of other studios such as
Starting point is 00:04:29 Crystal Dynamics, Eidos and a couple others in particular so that I was always just a tone deaf silly way to go about things and admittedly you know in my time there I don't know how much has changed but I would say based on the fact that Babylon's fall just came out that policy is probably still a full throttle pun intended because you would think after the first couple of failures with that you know your Nazgoth's and your Chinatown Wars and such that they'd stop so we have the breaking news that comes today which is that Square Enix has sold off their Western owned companies particularly Eidos and Crystal
Starting point is 00:05:23 Dynamics to Embracer's group the deal was for 300 million and it includes tons of tons of specific IPs to those but Square Enix Montreal is also included in that because that was a sister studio to Eidos Montreal that was founded a couple years later more recently here so that gives them Embracer's group who currently are like THQ and Gearbox and such. They're THQ Nordic basically and they snapped up some other stuff. Yeah yeah Gearbox being another big one and then a bunch of others but they they basically got the IPs for Tomb Raider for Deus Ex for Thief, Summer in Limbo. There was a question about Sleeping Dogs that was
Starting point is 00:06:18 asked during the press conference no clear answer has been given but they own a bunch of IPs that come with those names and this is a business deal that's gonna go through sometime this year between July and September. So I gotta raise my hand here and I have to agree with the general consensus that I'm seeing everywhere from the laymen and also for business people is that this is they picked up a couple studios who in the past have had really good rock star output but have had bad times lately and I think everybody can put those bad times on like high-end decision-making rather than the actual talent of those
Starting point is 00:07:04 teams and they also picked up like 10 to 50 like valuable to extremely valuable to you could do a lot with this IPs in a mass bundle for like a fucking dirt discount steal people in the chat just pointed out that exclusivity on rise of the Tomb Raider alone cost a hundred million so just like a couple years ago so yeah and and and so this is what I'm to me as someone who again who likes was that we used to work there I'm looking at this and I feel it is a a bittersweet win-win because you have all these games and all these IPs that a lot of people care about and a lot of them have been unused underutilized mistreated and
Starting point is 00:08:12 essentially there's no guarantee that switching hands to Embracer's group is gonna make them do good things for these IPs but it can't get much worse than fucking dead now can it it can actually it can be dead where the last thing that killed it was a completely just derivative product that come that tried to capitalize on the name and turn it into something else your Nosgoth's and such where you just essentially you stop you stomp the the coffin further into the dirt with these types of projects and then when you read oh boy go and blind again alright there we go we're back and then when you read the the the further
Starting point is 00:09:15 details where it says that the transaction which only went for 300 million enables the launch of new businesses moving forward with investments and including blockchain in the cloud and basically the further further pushing down the your NFT game priority that's likely going to be coming it just kind of goes okay they're not gonna get it and they kind of are gonna refuse to get it so you know what like I'm sure I'm sure these studios are not gonna be too bitter about being able to dodge that right when you're like let's say Square Enix Montreal stayed on right and the
Starting point is 00:10:01 got put out of the deal right and the deal was only 200 million right like it's fake numbers whatever right that would mean that Square Enix Montreal gets given the 200 million from the deal and goes hey guys guess what guess what you guys get to make next that's right Deus Ex NFT game make it work and as this would be the most thematically appropriate thing possible ever and you know as a studio that made like some like they made they made a like human revolution was a huge impact right that was a massive return for that franchise and in fact it like it's what kind of like put them on the map and
Starting point is 00:10:43 created a put them out as a winner in in Square Enix's eyes and and prioritize them but essentially a lot of just it feels as if a lot of oversight in the worst ways led to some of those projects just not living up to their full potential it's not a complete it's not to put to put it all on the publisher but it is to say that there's a lot they wanted to do that they couldn't do and that applies to base-dates basically every game that I touched while I was there and this is no promise of a better future but it's one that might be different from the fucking nothing that existed right there are so many fun
Starting point is 00:11:31 stories to tell about Square Enix like over its history because well we we've been doing this podcast for a while but also like I just turned 36 right who I'm old now you're a little younger than I am but we've been playing this shit and following this shit forever and Square Enix might be the most poorly managed Japanese video game studio that still exists it has had a non-stop history of calamitous obviously bad business decisions that it has somehow just barely gotten around some of this strength of its brands and some mergers and shit some people are talking about as well the part where some of this is to
Starting point is 00:12:25 like kind of like trim the fat of their western studios and and and trim it down to a core of their of their Japanese development studios and that's a way to phrase that and I mean it really like when you look first so there was the fact that there was such a conflict you know I mean I guess almost ten years ago but there was such a conflict when the goal at the time of the person in charge what what I was to like get a bunch of Western studios involved and like you know to see games like Human Revolution and kind of lean in that direction and basically go hey which teams are making the best projects right
Starting point is 00:13:11 now we can trust them with everybody who used to work at Eidos we can trust them with like you know working on our best games and putting out cool stuff and that'll be that you know that that's the way to go with it and that didn't sit too well with ever with everybody that was over at the screenings Japan offices and eventually that changed to one where it was like okay this whole like Western support thing we're gonna kind of pull back on that and like you'll be there in periphery but we're going to reprioritize the the the Japanese studios we have and you guys can kind of you know like I don't know figure it
Starting point is 00:13:50 out do something you know and there was a pullback essentially as well as a change of leadership that went alongside that and with that change it feels like it came a general I don't even like disdain is not the word it's like well the the feeling that I got talking to people from around that area is that it wasn't disdain but no feeling that Eidos's stuff was showing up the Japanese studios there was definitely a generalized insecurity there's absolute that was what was what that was what birthed the switch the insecurity was massive absolutely massive at the time and you know you can go and look and I
Starting point is 00:14:44 mean basically there were there were projects that you know things that got canceled that that were were shoved in and things that were killed off that were like not for like oh it like uncertain business reasons as much as like potential reasons personal grievances and it's interesting when you go back and you can like see some things were like there's leadership that left the studio that didn't want to be there anymore because they were very excited about the projects that were being worked on by the teams but the leader but the publishing essentially had what cited as lack of courage right they
Starting point is 00:15:29 didn't they didn't fully believe in what was being put out and it just it's a weird weird situation where you own a number of studios that are talented and good at what they're doing and are making good things but that's not making you and your people happy that's a super weird situation and again this is what happens when a new captain takes the ship and then things kind of change so anyway so you that's that's back whenever I'm talking ancient shit I can't talk about ten years ago I can you know but like whatever steers that the the course back then you fast forward to now where essentially it feels as if 14 is
Starting point is 00:16:14 the only thing that's the lifeblood right that's what it pays for every mistake you see mm-hmm and mm-hmm and that like FF 14 success is in a sense poisoning the thought process at Square Enix and FF 11 also did this to a degree which is how we ended up with the original fucked up 14 because 14 pays for so many mistakes the thought process comes down what if we just had five more of those but but proof is still like there's still occasional drops of things where you're like if you just release a no frills solid video game without all the bullshit a near-automata right and you let the people who make
Starting point is 00:17:14 who do this best do it you get yourself a winner and a claimed classic right there's you know in a game like that comes out untouched unsullied by the the you know all the the gas the lines design philosophies and all that bullshit and can just be a full thing and I mean I don't know how much Yoko Taro stubbornness has to deal with that him rolling on the floor yelling fuck you Square Enix like a bunch of it but Yoko Taro seems like the kind of guy where they go hey we think you should do this and he'll go I'll fucking quit today immediately and they're like we just want you to put a costume in the game
Starting point is 00:17:57 and he's like I'm signing the letter right now yeah so you have you have these examples of what is possible but overall the inability to keep your fingers out of the pies and just push these things like it was it just fucking sucked and so what you get is you get the we're sitting on all these IPs certainly and we're just never gonna do anything with them because they were they were worth gold when we bought them and they they are now but if we can't turn it into a massive subscription success that like microtransactions it's way into being like you know something comparable to 14 then why even bother you know and and
Starting point is 00:18:46 furthermore these are like beloved IPs that are they're Western IPs you know they're not as important they're not they're not as important so so and it's obvious like of course if you're a if you're a businessman working at Square Annex in Japan and you've grown up with Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest and shit like that right and you look over at fucking Gex okay Gex is not gonna have the cultural and social and personal cache that the Dragon Quest is gonna have right obviously not but it's definitely more than that there's it's definitely more than just the natural understanding of the different culture
Starting point is 00:19:33 that you came up with like I think that you described the gas situation I can't think of an IP and obviously I'm gonna bring this up because it's the one I care about the most but legacy of Kane at one point was so popular that you would see Kane and Raziel in like playstations like main character you know that weird Hera we're like characters that Sony didn't own but we're still known iconic to the PlayStation system yeah right and those games all did fine they weren't gangbusters but they were a respectable series of games now a bunch of those voice actors are fucking dead so that's a problem but I can't think of
Starting point is 00:20:23 a single genre of game slash IP that is more poorly suited to this kind of business plan because it was like high-end story content with like voice acting that put Metal Gear to shame with a time traveling thing and these hyper close narrative almost all of it like you can't do this kind of stuff with that so it sits dead and you know and then you have the ones that that like that lived but were still touched I mean like thief was something else before it turned into what came out and what it was and what it was was something that was not the thing that came out what do you mean and then management got involved
Starting point is 00:21:18 and then it became something else you look like you want to talk about thief but for some reason you're unable to talk about the day sex was something else before it became what came out and you know there was a thing that seemed pretty cool and then things happened and then it became less cool I mean the day sex thing is actually a lot more clear and that it's become very obvious that they took the game and instead of making the full game they're like universe the word universe the word universe gotta make it it gotta it gotta have the big gotta can't just mass effect is gotta mass effect is the the publishing model
Starting point is 00:22:13 to follow and we're really good at but but if you went anyway it it's just yeah so a lot of a lot of dumb higher-up decisions led to simple solid games becoming worse than the what they were on paper certainly and then in some cases not even on paper but like legitimately in in in your hands but regardless of all that what ends up here is that it's not a complete let go of all their Western things though because Square Enix is retaining just cause outriders and life is strange so there are still there are still some some games that are you know and don't not is now the life is strange company like they're they're just
Starting point is 00:23:17 they're turning them out like those things are doing what they're doing but yeah Square Enix is still got those those those games okay I'm not gonna speak I'm not gonna speak on the life is strange and don't nod or was the first one you said just cause just cause yeah I do know just cause has been in a very significant decline but the days of just cause to or are a long time ago as somebody who was like involved in the outriders like PR campaign and received monetary funds to cover it only for the game to just repeatedly fall apart and in particular there was a very weird period around one of their big patches where
Starting point is 00:24:11 they reached out to people to cover it again and then when you followed up on that email they went never mind Jesus like I've never had that happen ever where they reached out and we're like hey we're gonna run a campaign and you go really and they go no yeah yeah but that's the writer seems like the kind of thing in Bracer group wouldn't want as part of the deal who knows who knows I mean they like they got they got a lot they got a lot in there you know I I just like I look at that it's it's there's the list of all the things they get for that cost like we said it's it's nice to hope that like these things
Starting point is 00:25:00 have a shot at life again also it's nice to hope that potentially they might have a shot at life with a publisher that is not going to be as fucking like detrimental with their hands-on with gas services and all the other shit that they did it's not it's not just the gas stuff but like other other budget cuts and and this last-minute decisions that are like that kind of turn a project into the things that make a game or a movie shit where just like at the last second you got to make huge changes and make them work somehow yeah any kind of upper management that that won't do that upper management that might actually
Starting point is 00:25:41 give a shit about you know you because like hey you're not just the remnants of the old guard that we still hang on to even though we don't really want you around certainly which also I don't know how much that explains the price or not but it doesn't really feel like they shopped around you know no it felt like they were desperate to get rid of it for whatever reason and that's that's the priority that those places that you know the that's how they looked at them you know where in X and the way they they handled some of these is just like so astonishing I don't remember who told me but I remember going over the budget
Starting point is 00:26:22 for the original Tomb Raider reboot which like I don't know if people remember but the game was becoming visibly more expensive every time they showed it it was very weird I can't remember almost any game that was they kept bragging about how much money they put into it and it was it was like it was something like 150 to 200 million or something for it and I got somebody to explain to me that the the the mental process on the budget for that game was that if we put in 50 more million we'll just make a hundred more million back well when people see the trust that's how big expensive games have worked now when
Starting point is 00:27:09 people see trust effects in action they will immediately pre-order and they will they will pre-order in the window that gives them the bigger reward because we have pre-order windows you know and and like every time the game came up it was adding something they added some fucking minor celebrity leaf Levi some yeah they added yeah it's a multiplayer yeah yeah yeah chuck and and that was gonna add x amount of fucking yep and then the game came out and they hit a fucking panic button where it was selling the numbers it was always gonna sell and rather than make any money they decided well we need to get the sales numbers up so they dropped the game's price to like 20 bucks six weeks in
Starting point is 00:28:01 and it stayed there like forever and yeah that game sold a shit ton of copies at 20 bucks yeah um I the thing is too is there's for all these of what I was kind of getting at earlier is that for all these ip's that they're that you know they're picking up the other part of like the other part of this is the shit that never got to get made um that was at least just on paper really really cool and interesting um that well there's one of those it's not gonna get made yeah well there's more than there's more the couple there's more there's a couple of them but essentially like um the feeling that once the once the guard changed the feeling was that I think they were handcuffed you know it was kind of a like you're gonna do this you are these are
Starting point is 00:29:02 the existing ip's you have work on those things and they certainly had ideas for other things but like you're so down the priority list at this point that there's no way we're gonna give you the budget to try anything new or you know like like hell no like fuck that stay like and and even what's tried and true is not what we're gonna you're gonna do either you're just gonna try to get this service thing going um and when you look at something like I don't know what possibly was the last straw if you look at Avengers right and you go okay um the the uh Avengers game comes out and it's like I can't think of a game that like in my brain I just think it like I my brain just goes yeah it's just a story mode game where you play the heroes but then there's always these
Starting point is 00:29:53 like little things to the system of that game that I just I still don't understand the the the roster and the like the character unlocking system and the like all these little management things with that game I'm like why isn't it just a straightforward buy the game play it it's good fun thing you know it's funny essentially what guardians of the galaxy came out as you know it's not not already um um yeah no guardians actually yes the star lord game it's it's funny to me because um I saw this once before and it just clicked to me that it was the same thing which was um Avengers couldn't have been hotter when that marvel game came out like it like it was the hottest thing that maybe has ever existed and it was begging for any video game and they released like a
Starting point is 00:30:49 complete pile of shit and um I was thinking it's like it's the biggest ball drop since and all I can think of is the prequel trilogy for star wars where like every game that came out around the prequel trilogy for star wars when that was the hottest thing in the universe was like complete garbage but at least they brought out like 15 of them except for pod racer pod racer fucking ruled sure yeah and and like that was if it doesn't even follow the fucking movies they could have done anything they could have started that whenever it could have done it could have been the simplest fucking iron man in captain america go on some fucking no-name adventure call it Avengers fucking whatever honestly the like I'm like I just feel like the fastest
Starting point is 00:31:46 easiest way to take um a self-contained a self-contained normal ass video game and um ruin it is to make it endlessly online to just take a simple thing and then just go no make it an endlessly online game even when it wasn't designed from that from the ground up or so like that's it's a simple decision you do it you go for that and then um everything that follows is fucking trash I don't know like I can't think of an example where that's managed to succeed and like be a runaway success I feel like we're gonna hit some kind of either academic or business perception point in a couple years when it's going to become quantified just how much damage to the average person's experience it it is to see something cool and
Starting point is 00:32:43 then realize that they have to buy it instead of play the game for it because it's not even per game it's like per industry so like I spoke to a lot I brought it up a couple weeks ago when you're playing Elden Ring like people are coming away playing Elden Ring for six hours and actually having the thought of like oh wow I just got to play a game I love Elden Ring so much more now because I just sat down and I did played it and then I just saw somebody pointed out as a really good example of Halo Infinite a game where I sat down and wanted to play Halo and the stuff that's not shooting the gun in Halo is so consistently infuriating that I have not played that game in like four months and may never play it again because every single thing
Starting point is 00:33:43 that's not shooting the gun is like a like bad time in my body when I sit there and Square Enix is just fucking dedicated to just doing that to every game and the most frustrating thing and I bring it up every time is they already have one of the most successful games as a service ever made sitting right over there in its own studio and 14 has a really specific formula that they follow and it's monthly sub make something the monthly sub feels worth monthly sub and that's an old model that is a really old model from like decades and decades ago and we got to see like unironically like 2500 million dollar games crash and burn because they fucked up the part where they made the thing that was worth the 15 dollars like like that's
Starting point is 00:34:53 the important part where you make something that's worth actually paying it for every month and people are excited to continue playing it as opposed to changing it or even from the ground up if it's designed to be that way versus changing something that was not intended to be that into that um like it's i'll take a really good example from this week this past week this past week the thorton fight came out the ultimate thorton fight now this is maybe one of the most difficult encounters to ever be designed in an mmo that was ever meant to be cleared like i'm not counting absolute virtue and shit like that that you know fucking made people sick right and despite the fact that no one is gonna beat this that you know and it's for nobody it's for the subtiniest
Starting point is 00:35:44 percentage of people it's been the most exciting thing about ff 14 for like a year because it's so crazy and it's so interesting and it's so cool and even if i'm not gonna play it i'm glad that it's there and i'm glad that i got made i don't get that fucking feeling when i load up marvels avengers and i go to oh well how can i play the fucking old cap like outfit and his fucking face is a complete mangled fucking mess because the texture didn't load in properly and the answer is five dollars the only way to be to come out unscuffed untainted by this overall philosophy is to be near or ff 7 remake right to just come out like to essentially to be a japanese like ip with someone heading the the project that refuses to compromise on any of that
Starting point is 00:36:44 pressure the and the people who get that treatment are numero yoshida and now maybe yoko taro actually um right like and and it's so bizarre because you have these high level decisions of like we're gonna focus on the blockchain from like you know the the board and the execs but at some point someone is going okay but we need to make like regular money though yeah and so they give final fantasy 16 which is their biggest ip after dragon quest to yoshida and they leave them alone well that's all this stuff goes away but that's the key though the key is the part where you leave them alone right that's after you make something successful and you go oh oh they know what they're doing you you can you can leave them alone that's the part right that's what we're missing
Starting point is 00:37:37 the trust the other thing is is there's there's yeah it's two factors one is time right yoshida and numero and taro and all these guys they've been working there in five 10 15 20 30 years in some cases right they've been there forever everybody knows them and the other thing is that they trust numero to put out a hit they trust yoshi p to put out a hit right they trust yoko taro to come in under budget that guy doesn't always hit but that dude comes in under budget right and also forwarded well but also um we got a mobile game we're making a fucking mobile game you a near mobile games coming out you you're not allowed to say no yeah but that level of trust was never afforded to the western studios despite them having their own properties that they had
Starting point is 00:38:36 worked on for a decade um you know or or it was there and then it was no longer there after a period of time so with that comes an overall just like yeah um anything else will do at this point and they don't have the power uh uh financially to buy themselves out you certainly and be like fuck it we're going back into pet you know what i mean like this is one of those things where i'm you know they're they're hurting as well and they're also they're not staffed with the same people like things have changed over the last 10 years it's there's been an you know a fluctuation of talent in and out but for the most part like those ip's are still ones that people care about and uh they deserve to be in better hands and in this context any other hands equal better hands
Starting point is 00:39:33 so anything um so godspeed godspeed embraces groups let's see what the fuck happens as you that's another monster list of acquisitions that they have uh that that that's another huge monster fucking blob of a of a of a what you might call it a publisher um but yeah uh we own that thing you like let's see what happens let's see what happens i mean i o got themselves out of there right they they you know and good for them i o had the power to back the fuck out a couple years ago and be like nah we're taking hitman and we're going home and they and that oh man you you want like the absolute perfect example you go look at hitman before during and after squaring x management they they got they took their ball and they went home man excellent excellent why is this one so bad
Starting point is 00:40:34 not everybody got gets the bio man but there's there it is there's your example you know so yeah yep yep i'm gonna go look something up because they made other um so so let's put in a perspective the value here 300 million for what is essentially what used to be idos right and everything that comes with it that's deus x tomb raider legacy of kane gex and a bunch of other uh classic to pseudo classic ip's right plus some studios for 300 million right um embracer group picked up fucking gearbox
Starting point is 00:41:27 for 1.3 billion just gearbox and the gearbox ip's which are borderlands aliens and brothers and arms so borderlands uh blizzard uh the was five times that amount practically um for everything that includes uh yeah this is a crazy low ball of based on you know uh what you'd expect oh yeah don't forget duke nukem in battle born of course of course not i yeah you know what i did um um 70 billion for for for the microsoft blizzard acquisition you know um it's to see something like at that level of just like shaved it's like it's again it's it's it feels like there was no shopping around it feels like
Starting point is 00:42:28 there was no um back and forth it feels like just like it best and final what do you want for it garage sale here it is get these western studios out of here do you know what my like real nightmare is on this oh my my like gut nightmare is that that 300 million dollar deal is going to go directly into one or maybe two blockchain nft games and they might as well just burn it now they they might as well just set it on fire but step three requires a step two um i've been trying like i've been me and i've been talking to punch mom about this and everything we watch and every like there's just this thing where you often see a bad decision incoming and you go oh no how did we get here and it's like the foresight it takes to not
Starting point is 00:43:41 make this current bad decision required you to not be an idiot about it eight steps ago so why would they not see that as a potential huge windfall if we can just nail this nft thing game thing if we can just get there ahead of the curb you know if we look at what ubi's doing and if we can just be the pioneers of this that'll be the way kind of like that gas like bet that we hedged all these ip's on a bit before this and you know and live service as a thing like it's the same fucking thing of just like you didn't they already missed it and well not well but there's there is no it's it's there's no success version to land on like there the the cryptocurrency shenanigans in the nfts that boom lasted for like 90 days and then everyone who got their money fucking ran away
Starting point is 00:44:45 did you see that motherfucker tried to sell jack's tweet yeah yeah yeah yeah for like it like from hundreds of millions like two grand like 24 million dollars for it um i mean the the the the same level of just complete uh uh blind stupid leadership where you're just like yeah we're gonna double down on these massive gambles it's the same thing that we that we talked about when they would introduce a lot of this this dumb micro to begin with where you're just like the risk the prospect of the payoff whoever is in their ear talking to them about it and showing them like the potential charts it's so big and like greedy that it can't be denied you know and people who are at who are sitting on the board are making the decisions there they're not going anywhere anytime soon these are
Starting point is 00:45:39 the people that are gonna be there dollar signs on their eyes they're gonna be there for the rest of our lives pretty much so like it it it it's not you're not gonna see any massive changes to that style of behavior when you're committed 10 15 years in down this road you know um and all people kind of want is just for you to just make a normal game that they will happily buy like it's it's uh yeah that that decision to dump it all in on the dumbest possible uh uh uh uh investment you can like they didn't even have to put that statement out but it just doubles it just underlines how much it's like okay throw it right away yeah just right away we'll try you know like take all these things that you know that everyone wanted good things for and cared about and just absolutely
Starting point is 00:46:30 flush it immediately and you're like cool this is this is the trajectory and and if that doesn't show you the um what if that doesn't convey the image of them diving off of a bus going off a cliff i don't know what does you know so i don't know like the the the age or the the makeup of the the the square board or you know the the people who make the decisions but i i have to be in awe that there hasn't been some kind of like shareholder revolt over the over the years because like they will take one bad idea and they will run with that bad idea for 10 years until it almost liquidates the company there's very famously square pictures which was Sakaguchi's brainchild which as a child i could have told you was a bad idea and they had to merge with edex
Starting point is 00:47:30 and then came the hd era which i have to which i have to like describe as a phrase people come to final fantasy for great stories and the most cutting-edge graphics available which led them down like the rabbit hole of putting out an ff game every like four or five years and everything that was with the mismanagement of 13 and 14 and 15 and then the gas and like they have more parachutes than most though any other studio would have been completely bankrupt by these decisions by now but and one of those reasons is hey motherfuckers do you kids like dragon quest right like
Starting point is 00:48:33 now helps now correct me if i'm wrong but is dragon quest not also a franchise that remains fucked with even when they fucked with it they've what i'm gonna say is they fucked with it with care okay okay oh lovingly okay so the the dragon quest builders games are apparently excellent little minecraft clones and the warriors games are fine media at best in offense at worst in offensive okay but the mainline shit uh never got no you know ripped apart yeah okay they're even going and taking the mmo that a bunch of people couldn't play and turning it back into a regular game which is the anti-squaring it's yeah so there's there's the parachutes and then there's the
Starting point is 00:49:32 like you are not allowed to disrespect this game with your bullshit mm-hmm well anyway um so that's that's a that's a fucking weird one man um and we'll see how it shakes out like this this whole article reads like to me it was like legacy of king tomb raider and deus x escaped square inix and also square inix burns some money i guess like there's no doubt like what downside is there how much worse could deus x be treated than the nothing that it is right now i mean it there's no and also like the the yeah the direct phrases the transaction enables the launch of new businesses moving forward with investments in fields including blockchain ai and the cloud so um that's that's just that's a straightforward
Starting point is 00:50:31 one-to-one that's exactly where that 300 mil is going how long has square inix been putting money into the cloud i mean definitely the entire time i was there but uh since the start of the seventh generation okay have they gotten anything out of that anything of value any like anything like maybe the servers that you guys use on 14 i don't i don't know no i don't those are those are custom built regular s mmo style servers down in california i i don't know but but i always remember like yeah well anyway just yes and it remember do you remember kingdom hearts coming out on the switch just like just a little bit ago
Starting point is 00:51:46 and it's being like a completely unplayable fucking mess it's just it's it's the it's just we're just gambling gambling on it gambling on this tech it's gonna if we make it work it's gonna work though it's totally wild because sony i mean they got that new playstation plus thing coming in that's like i'm sure we're gonna talk about that today but like playstation now right that's not the fucking game change in whatever but like they got something out of it they put out a product that you could buy or rent or whatever you want to call right like yeah um i i just i don't know this just there's nothing about this like
Starting point is 00:52:36 sequence that doesn't make sense it's just infinite bad decisions uh that follow each other and then a series of really good ip's that are um being had made like worked on by talented people that are not being fucked with in the middle of that bad torrent of management in in squaring Japan and then over here yeah you get you get fucking razelle and and lara croft diving to safety you know and and uh just tucking and rolling um and grabbing jensen like with them i i have to sit like there's a lot about legacy a cane that hurts in my heart at the very like why didn't a god damn hd collection ever come out like do you know how much of a pain in the ass it is to actually just go ahead and play those games it's a fucking massive fucking pain
Starting point is 00:53:42 but like tony j's fucking dead man he's like the he's like the second most third most important character in that game and he's fucking dead and he was alive for a while after those games started coming out stop coming out michael bell's gonna go soon he's like 80 he's in the first episode of tng for fuck's sake you want a fucking weirdo brain thing go watch tng the villain of that episode is played by raziel have they ever talked about like their feelings on returning to work on it or anything like that not not to my knowledge but they seem cool okay i'm sure they'd be down because yeah there's always the the awesome strategy of like the games that are known for their incredible voice acting just wait until the talent literally is no longer with us you know i
Starting point is 00:54:42 don't know if simon temple man is fucking because he's like the guy who voices kane sounded like he was a million fucking years old when he was like 20 oh he's only 68 jesus okay you know he's fine um so does this now mean that um straight up you can get uh yeah this means you can get jensen lara and raziel in saint's row you can just you can just throw them right in same world so you joke you you joke but i don't know if you remember what the last legitimately like thoughtful piece of legacy of kane content ever to come out what yes it was in lara croft when you could switch lara and um um the her uh the the toltec so toltec yeah when toltec you could swap them for kane and raziel that's that's the last one for the whole story that's it and
Starting point is 00:55:52 like it's like it's not even it's not it's not even that far off like if i if i saw michael bell as raziel in saint's row just show up for unironically five minutes do a bit eat a guy's soul and fly a piece out i i would be like cool yeah like it's it's not like what i wanted right i'm not like yeah it's my boy but i'd be like oh that's cool i'm not upset like every single time i thought about fucking legacy kane over at square enix where it's just sitting in a drawer and and look i don't think anybody's gonna fucking exactly no one's gonna complain about that no one's gonna complain about like hey look it's garret he's it's got garret snooping around he stole a thing why not fucking i mean i just saw somebody point point out that like this like
Starting point is 00:56:49 these characters might now like fucking put late put fucking kane and did fucking fortnight fine whatever fine whatever it's all on the table it doesn't matter i was in there how come jensen and fucking kane never got to fortnight they're cool um yeah and i guess since johnny gatt was in dive kick this also further links the universes that the bass is a part of since that's a big link since you can go you can go bass to dive to johnny gatt and dive kick johnny gatt sainz roe uh over to uh embracer group you get you get deus x uh you got laura croft with that yeah you get a lot it opens up the possibilities hold on hold on because okay so
Starting point is 00:58:01 bass was in dive kick with s kill who is the boss of street fighter four well not directly not directly who know who knows re you i mean shit if you yeah all right and so that then that means that so so you give bass a re you number of like five even though he originated in street fighter two it's it's it's the fort he started in street fighter two and concept art but still has a re you number of five yeah that happened and fortnight really like because the whole thing like oh so-and-so is in this and then so-and-so is in that like fortnight really like took a lot of the fun out of that because as soon as you can connect to a character that's been in fortnight you can connect to like every everything that's ever come out yeah um there's a screenshot that just came out
Starting point is 00:59:09 of like uh like hey look new marvel versus capcom and it's just the full list of uh all the marvel and all the capcom and marvel characters and it's like oh my god they have like a bunch of x-men they've got a bunch of street fighter like like you could just released a roster that was basically the mvc one roster in size at this point yeah depressing i'm eager to i'm eager to see anything from this deal literally anything like anything any any action at all any announcement at all any any any of it is a win um because it's it's not stomping the the corpse is further wait into the ground is kratos and dive kratos is not in dive kick kratos is in shovel night shovel night and kratos is in fortnight there you go somebody just pointed out that he has
Starting point is 01:00:12 a ryu number of three because it was bad's kratos ryu there you go okay okay shovel night's the connecting force there anyway um please get some some fucking warm blankets and and coffee for these ip's they're gonna need to heat up around the fire um get them to get them some a hot meal and just you know give them some time to get over their trauma but uh they're free i need i need to ask you what result of this deal are you the most excited to see first the potential for sleeping dogs to return okay for me it's how square anix is gonna throw their money away like like like you're gonna see it and you're gonna see it from a great distance and everyone's
Starting point is 01:01:14 gonna have the same feeling of like oh man that's that's a bad idea oh man okay outriders and nfts like like just just have the two post-it notes on a bulletin board and just slide them together i have i have never i have never felt a 180 on a game more than outriders in its pre-release state to outriders in its post-release state it went from a really really fun loot shooter to a completely fucking unplayable mess like just unbelievable i mean alternatively if they just kept taking other games assets and dropping them into babelon's fall and just making it a mugen that could be interesting too uh you know for the 10 concurrent players i have to say the fact that the assets in babelon's fall
Starting point is 01:02:26 look worse than the games they're being pulled from is just hilarious but that's pretty much always the case though because it's not made for that like it's not like it's not for that lighting engine they were made for not textured the right way like it's always like that you know anyway uh so that that fucking that's that's the big one that's a big one for pennies on the dollar woke up to that yeah pennies on the dollar just pennies on the dollar like i forget which i forget which tomb raider game it was but it's going exclusive to microsoft for that one game was a hundred million dollars and you compare that to like multiple studios
Starting point is 01:03:17 and all the like wow i gotta i gotta check in on some friends and see see what's going on you know see what the see what the mood is see how the vibe the vibe is at the moment although i mean to god like a lot of people aren't there anymore admittedly anyway um so that happened um oh i you know okay well i was gonna roll right into the next uh news bit but there was also a week that occurred yeah i mean we did stuff or whatever mm-hmm um i'll keep it i'll keep it simple really uh hold up fuck yeah we have confirmation of my favorite part of business sale news guy in the chat my friend who works for square antics found out from twitter of course
Starting point is 01:04:12 yeah no stop stop stop everybody stop this is the way this this is the way this works you can't tell anybody that you're employing what is happening because you don't want them to do anything and because knowledge is power everyone needs to find out at the same time the public does what the future of their company holds every time this is the way it goes it's it's not a an accident it's not a you know uh oh like an oversight it's a deliberate move keeping you in the dark not having people panicking or doing things or changing you know whatever they whatever it is you're you're not gonna know until the public knows and in many cases the public will know first and those days are always fun at the office as people like just kind of look around going
Starting point is 01:05:02 what what the fuck is what the fuck is happening uh it's the same and you know that goes into when you're firing people as well like it's the ambush news you can't you can't actually tell people beforehand um the closest you get sometimes is like a morning meeting that says like hey this is happening right now or this is about to happen at lunch but if you're lucky you know absolutely man are are we fired we'll get back to you my my key doesn't my key card doesn't work anymore it doesn't beep it doesn't beep um yeah anyways so i was just gonna move into um weak stuff let's do it sorry i'm moving around i got cats screaming i got a fire alarm that just decided to go into service mode i got all sorts of crap going on so what's up with you
Starting point is 01:06:03 man uh well i'll keep it short one finished off bad vegan and uh i can say after seeing the third and fourth episode of uh that fucking mess that i can recommend this if you are down for a nice deep deep solid hate watch like if you want to follow a story where everyone involved is just a piece of shit i do i watch time king yeah if you want a nice deep hate watch absolutely uh go ahead because um try as they might uh the the editing cannot and will not save uh your main character protagonist lady uh our goop girl cannot save her uh from being just essentially like equally as awful as the insane cultist dude who's like push stringing things along um for for different reasons right that like like you're looking at this story by the end of it and basically going like
Starting point is 01:07:20 so on the one hand you have an one person cult where this insane dude is just uh uh lying and manipulating you know this lady out of her her millions of dollars to get the one person called that's it's wild you know and and then promising for like tons of things and whatever and then on the other hand you have the uh the lady who like essentially like it's at every opportunity bought in because she was promised like evil illuminati power over humanity it's not so much that the cult is promising me good things for me it's also that the cult is promising me bad things for others and like it's and so you start out with your your like okay so they're not really spending time on it they're kind of hand waving over the fact that she's also looking at this dude as like
Starting point is 01:08:21 someone who lied about being like super rich or whatever so she's looking at this as a goal digging opportunity right a potential opportunity but then midway through the hustle where you do the instant like like instant marriage into the possibility of amassing massive wealth um right becomes the possibility to you might have gold dug your way into being a ruler of humanity the ultimate the ultimate dig you know um that sounds pretty good yeah what if you could go dig your way into into godhood right you thought it was a redding wedding ring it turns out it was a behelit you know um and as you go up tom ask him how that works and as you go along the way every single step is just like uh about how manipulated she was and how she didn't know
Starting point is 01:09:19 what was going on or what was happening and how everyone that tried to stop her and all her friends and family were just like they couldn't do anything um and like you just you again it it it very very casually transitions into so then she stopped paying her workers and then i mean yeah she started like taking the money and stealing the money and and like and at the time that they were on uh that they were on strike going fucking pay us uh she was on instagram traveling the world with the one-man cult guy as he was dictating that they had to go to different cult locations and she's like i don't know why but whatever i guess we're just vacationing in europe um and then this then there's a a nice uh build up to absolute chaos where
Starting point is 01:10:10 they're just like okay well if this world domination thing hasn't happened yet and um we're now like in trouble for all the money we've stolen from our employees maybe we can just walk away from the problems and then they'll go away so then you enter the arc of just pretending the problem is not there and that's always maybe it isn't i mean maybe it's not there if you stop looking at it it'll go away you know uh so that that that it's a nice a nice hate watch all the way up until the end where even in like the last 30 seconds you're it ends on a pop i'll say this it ends on a goddamn pop um and uh yeah yeah if you if you if you take life if you gain gain life out of watching garbage people um being trash and and hoping that like uh the narrative will save them uh
Starting point is 01:11:08 but it it absolutely doesn't then yeah check out the rest of bad vegan um other thing is uh i checked out sonic 2 uh huh do you see sonic 2 no okay sonic 2 came out do you go faster than you can in sonic 1 he says the line the memes were done yeah yeah oh good excellent memes hey uh you know what not a dumpster fire and so by live action sonic metrics like that's a dub the the the sentiment uh uh the sentiment i i i get from it is that like maybe it's just where my expectations were the first time around maybe it's it's like uh i was i was pleased with uh not being inundated with too many human scenes in the first time the first one but like i definitely felt like i'm like okay i expected fucking nothing and i walked out going
Starting point is 01:12:22 like yeah that was dumb you know that was that was that was silly but it did its thing and in this case you have that feeling as well except that there are much like a transformers like experience like extended human scenes that refuse to end and like when they fade away and you're like okay we're going back to the fucking to the sonic now right and then it fades back to humans and you're like oh my god please please stop so i have a question is jim carrey in those human scenes he is okay well that's fine then yeah but then there's the human scenes without jim carrey oh no no no no no no no no no no he can't have that no jim carrey and his assistant i'm not even that's not even what i'm talking about or thinking of i'm talking about
Starting point is 01:13:12 the extensive scenes of humans that are neither jim carrey nor his assistant mr stone those guys are great um yeah there's a there's a there's a solid extended uh uh sequence especially towards the end where it's like a whole subplot where you're just like all right all right we're we're we're following the the human espionage mission uh for i don't know it felt like a long time um but yeah in any case though it hits its marks it does the fan service it's it's again it's it's self-aware and dumb and uh idris comes in and he does he does he does the knuckles and he refuses to chuckle um and is how much how much olive garden is there in this movie there is absolutely uh at least one reference to olive garden
Starting point is 01:14:13 and um what's uh and you know what's cool what's interesting is um the first one i wasn't really thinking about it as much but because you're just like all right it's a mascot live action movie like fish out of water right learn the ropes get the settings down etc um it's sab sonic is establishing his character but um something i didn't expect that was pretty uh cool was actual like like in actual irl sonic levels existing was interesting to see it's like oh shit yeah locations not just like oh yeah that's like you know green hill seattle it's a city and then there's a little forest out there it's like oh no there's actual like sonic level things happening and that was pretty cool um didn't expect to see that and uh it was it was and then of course um that that
Starting point is 01:15:12 follows up with sonic level and then that also falls up with sonic boss style thing happening as well so uh yeah you know uh you just you don't go in expecting it to be like solid you go in looking for uh uh uh uh this to be just you want it to pass and you want sonic to not embarrass himself so the question uh the the rating that i would always do it on these video game movies is if the if i had not gone to see this movie because it was a video game that i liked how kind would i be to it then you wouldn't you wouldn't be as kind you definitely wouldn't right especially given the humanity um you wouldn't be as kind to it uh right and like i think that what what got me on that main brain thing was
Starting point is 01:16:08 the transformers movies or i'm like if this was just some fucking robot and not optimus prime how how into this shit would i be and the answer is fucking not and also if you go in also knowing that this is like a kid's movie too right like the jokes and the the shit are not written in a way to land um in the way that they do for like i don't know like a like a Pixar movie lands or something like that you know i don't know man because in that first movie when they showed sanic i'm pretty sure that was not for the kids okay but that's the thing though and that's that brings the next point up which is there's knowing like that the robot is optimus prime right yeah but then there's knowing all the memes and the and the internet culture
Starting point is 01:17:05 around sonic that's the next point of this so it's not enough to just be like i remember sonic the hedgehog in my childhood it's also like the current fucking internet meta age of this character that that exists the twitter account you know uh knowing that is the second layer of it and they throw that shit in knowing that that's relevant as well um if you didn't know or care about any of that it'd be very different it'd be very very different sonic crawl into like a pregnant big the cat no but you why did that take you more than an instant to answer what the hell because uh uh there's and anyway there's other yeah there's there's there's more sanic in there and there's another shit um but uh yeah i know anyway the the the the the the the important
Starting point is 01:17:56 thing is just like you're enjoying this because of what it's linked to uh and and what your memories are and your and like seeing the thing you're clapping when you see it you know as opposed to um its own two feet its own stand alone quality certainly and it's and it's again it's like but that's also what the first one was it's just it's dumb but it's fine you know it's fine for what it is um and uh and then of course like you know you uh you you you you cheer when knuckles does the nuts and and yeah you cheer and then you see like oh tails does the tails thing um and then yeah they basically just they they set up what uh what the sequels are gonna be the next logical step what's the next logical step and like you want to talk about embracing the dumb fun
Starting point is 01:18:54 of it oh yeah man when i when i was in the theater the first one and like tails shows up in the post credits that audience fucking popped so tune out now if you don't want to hear uh uh post credit spoilers for sonic 2 so yeah how do you pop harder than tails showing up and knuckles has already showed up what's the next step what could it be blaze the cat for me yes for me it would absolutely but no you promise the fullest edge you can get you promise to deliver shadow the fucking hedgehog he is all that he is all he is and and i don't know how they're gonna do this without it being the dumbest most full hearted embrace of like his gun play shit you know what i mean like you need to shoot a gun like a real human gun but i don't know if
Starting point is 01:20:06 they're gonna allow that because even in this they were like when they had when there was moments for guns there was stand-ins because it was like we got to pull out tasers and little toy tails gadgets we can't have real full-on guns you know yeah you can so i i don't know if the rating a lot of fucking desert eagle i don't know if the rating and then caught and no no he's pull out a fucking not an ak47 what does he pull out did like it like an mp5 and then coxing yeah he pulls out an mp5 and he cox it you know uh yeah yeah just i i'm i'm i'm a bit i didn't expect that i expected a pace where they're probably gonna you know i expected tails in two and then maybe knuckles in three and then whatever but maybe they're looking at it like hey we might get a trilogy
Starting point is 01:20:50 out of this at best so if we get away with it let's just put it all in you know right away um i bet i bet there's enough sonic characters to keep this going for a bit yeah but not there's only a few that are going to have that pop what about what about lyric the owl and the chaotix what about them would a merle get a pop yeah um it's uh it's from sonic battle yeah a little bug thing um anyways uh i feel as if you know there's a there's a uh uh uh there's a limit to how many like post reaps post credit pops you can get out of this did so did sonic have a part where he looked at the camera and told kids how to not get molested he did not um that's a classic sonic moment that i'm waiting to see on the big screen and he also uh did not get on his
Starting point is 01:21:52 knees and pray you know and pray for 9 11 but um wait what oh come on sonic praying no i'm specifically referring to your phrasing he's praying for 9 11 well i mean it the picture has like sitting he's like sitting there praying to god's like please 9 11 the picture has sonic praying across and then the tower is in the background but it doesn't specify what he's praying for so you're it's left up to our interpretation second mistakes into miracles uh fucking sonic no it's not going to be the preg I don't think it'll be in the pregnancy one oh yeah that's the one there's there's sonic with pan who's pregnant with rainbow dash in front of
Starting point is 01:22:53 the 9 11 yeah but the mistakes into miracles and that's not even the one i'm thinking of there's one where like there's like a never forget one you know there's a there's a sonic never forget where he's praying forget sonic and then there's oh there's a lot oh there's a lot oh jesus christ okay all right just um yeah way more yeah it's somewhere in there I man americans all just lost their fucking minds around that period that everything about everything about children's art and 9 11 is the most cursed shit to exist well it's less about the period and it's more about sonic specifically and again what he represents which
Starting point is 01:23:43 is the edge of of uh the edge of what a christian child can appreciate without getting into the violence I and and that also goes hand in hand with like old-fashioned american pie americana yeah hey did they say anything mean to tails and then tails looked at the camera and made the face no tails is just really like nervous and and like uh unconfident on his own and then like has to be like cheered up but you know you get like just full-on wild uh um uh not serbian um Siberian fucking dance numbers and shit so you know um okay days date CG is expensive and when the money runs out they cut to the humans for a while
Starting point is 01:24:47 I see I see I see that's all anyways um there it is um I'm glad I will check that out as soon as some form of it becomes available outside of the theater I don't think it'll take too long yeah morbius watch how's your morbius still on no morbius okay morbius watch completed no morbius over here wait hold on that's not necessarily true uh because I uh will occasionally use tiktok oh shit consistently see that weird scene of the doctor who dancing with no shirt off and doing a scary vampire face that people seem to be obsessed with uh you've seen infinitely more morbius than I have then the sweep is coming but not this week um yeah so there's those two and then you know uh moving along handsomely we got uh
Starting point is 01:26:00 ff6 and elden ring continuing over on the channel good times those games are good good times good times um yeah uh are you Latin six you should be getting there I I'm putting the party back together um I met the fucking uh the two just back to back wild the moment where the game does like again I guess it's I know it's first but in my head when party members for no reason just show up and then are like I'm joining you like that's just chronocross to me like because that's what like half of that game is and so like the fucking yeti uh just it's just there and you just beat a yeti down and then Mog is like yeah he'll do whatever I say cupo I've saved your life and now it belongs to me cupo yeah so then the yeti joins and then um and then you fucking go and you you
Starting point is 01:26:57 meet uh uh uh gogo and it's like a boss from ff5 that like fell into the live stream and then popped up in six he's just a freak yeah that's it was wild um so you know uh I just I got them on the party and then I realized uh how insane gogo's mechanic is so oh yeah the anything yeah so now like the the build mechanics are starting to to come together um and you know what's fucking awesome insane timing you see that goddamn terra statue dude I did I seen it 14 thousand dollars on an immaculate like statue of terra riding on a magitek engine doing the logo um but I'm just looking at that like this thing is it's on your desk it's it's the size of a toddler and yeah like if you invest what is essentially a car into like a final fantasy statue you can't put it
Starting point is 01:28:12 anywhere in your house unless you have the fountain to surround it by and the chandelier that must go overhead yeah it's a centerpiece for your your fucking walk at your walk in mansion I had a fun moment talking about that statue with page where it said hey page and she said what I said did you see that I think I quoted as 12 000 whatever you see that 12 000 ff6 statue it's crazy and she's like oh my god that sounds great what is it and I go you know exactly what it is and she goes yeah I do like if you're gonna produce a big fancy statue at a final fantasy six there is the one statue you make and sure enough it's terra on the goddamn magitek it's the logo every time yeah um when you when you beat ff14 2.0 the mech you get is terra's magitek and it plays her music
Starting point is 01:29:12 like it is the one yeah um I I was I was talking to my friends about that and I heard that like there's some cool shit uh some nice uh remixes because six and 12 are the ones that get like um big uh uh 14 content right uh they've they have they've all had yeah like they there's references most of them have had a turn yeah like well I mean I know but like there's like nights of the round and like little things like that but in terms of like a four-part like series of raids dedicated aren't uh six no no okay no uh seven has actually dodged it pretty sufficiently yeah it they pull from all over the place the new stuff has like a lot of five and four stuff okay yeah no I heard I heard some cool shit like about like you know you get
Starting point is 01:30:08 to see like doma and stuff that's that's pretty cool I'm gonna I'm gonna check that out yeah and doma's theme is is science theme of course it is um but yeah this fucking thing like I can't believe even at like when I see a prize like that too like the fact that they're like it's of it's one of 600 it's like you're you you expect to move 600 of these things like like the Dante jacket was the most obnoxious piece of fan merch oh boy until this happened um and to me like the only the only time you can get like fan merch that enters this territory has to be like like if you were to sell me like a working iron man suit then I'd be like yeah I'll like pay anything like I don't care you know like if it's a functioning version of a thing like like a real live DeLorean which
Starting point is 01:31:08 again though I mean there's the whole history of the racket behind that um but if it if it is a car you can drive uh for at least a couple uh weeks until it falls apart um then yeah sure you know but like you can't get into this collectible territory without delivering like a functioning product in my brain at some point so I just did some quick maths some quick maths on the statue and they uh thought or think that they're going to make over somewhere around um eight million dollars off of it and I don't know if that's reasonable well uh pre or now it's a one six scale statue uh for thirteen thousand seven hundred and ninety nine dollars I don't know anyway man uh so yeah ff6 is great and um and yeah Elden Ring continues and it's a
Starting point is 01:32:14 ff6 it's good times it's good times uh I have seen the lord of blood and I have felt oh Moog so cool the lord of blood and you know what uh what he can have mekella because he deserves it wait a second the last I spoke to you you were hanging out in Caledon and Radon Town and what not what the fuck are you doing out in Moog Town man that shit is for real yeah uh I felt it um and I just I'm just doing whatever suits my fancy and in this case I went and I talked to Vare and then he gave me a thing and said no uh uh and I went fuck you and I used it and then that happened yeah yeah so hey guess what that's how you get to the fucked up farming spot oh okay well if you if you ever need to you know get an extra boop um yeah yeah that dude's a pedo you need to kill him
Starting point is 01:33:23 what yeah what the fuck what's what are you talking about mekella the god cursed with eternal childhood okay well I don't know anything about mekella yet but I just know there's an egg and a hand falls out of it so um let's let's leave that alone please no you're gonna have to go back and take and take care of that all right well just let's just leave that alone please it was written by the george rr martin did you really think you were gonna get out of the game without finding a weird incest pedo demon I mean I was expecting like you know crasters keep perhaps but uh sure all right um I don't know what that's about but sure anyway anyway anyway um
Starting point is 01:34:22 um yeah well uh so the the way I've been going through the the game has been well what obviously like um by just like reading over the the the the you know descriptions and like um of every detail and getting the the the lore drops here and there but it's like it's slowly fleshing out um these characters but it's the most it's interesting because even though it's the most straightforward so far of like the the way that these stories have been delivered for a from soft game it's also very confusing because uh essentially like regis taking notes and has the control f ready to go whenever there's like a name that we've already seen but there's all the the r family the m family the g family and it's real bad and you're trying to and the problem is is that you're trying
Starting point is 01:35:14 to like create a timeline a family tree and uh context for what each of these individuals have done uh before you really like see them and have an ability to link it to something so yeah like you know as you're described like as you're talking about like mekela there for example right now mekela is just one of many names that have floated about in some lore descriptions but there's no there's no way there's no actual full context given you know so I feel like a lot of the characters at this point um are just a name and then a bunch of bubbles of floating ideas around them and perhaps encountering them will like solidify that or you know encountering something to contextualize it uh or like a a lore cut scene or even a description from um um um uh the all
Starting point is 01:36:01 knowing asshole but um as it stands there's just a bunch of floating cloud names that just have words vaguely near them in my brain you know and you have to pull them together with each little mention um but it gets rough it gets a little a little tricky to to juggle all that yeah like mekela or mekela or however you say it is probably like a really incredible example because you run into the problem where you like you said bregi's taking down notes yeah um but this game more than any other game is a huge fan of some of these characters have had different names over time um and so you run into mekela who like you used your your sleep uh fucking sword right for a while and you've been finding little little um treana little flowers treana's
Starting point is 01:36:57 treana's lily is uh is your sleep stuff and mckella has has a lily yeah and like oh at some point in some description on some item you find out like oh saint treana is like an alternate like religious name for mekela like they're they're they're referring to the same person and then you have to mentally go and fucking combine that with all that shit and it's a fucking mess are you punishing me for taking too long to play the game no okay i don't even know why everyone's going nuts like this is the most minor possible detail conceivable okay well anyway um we'll get there when we get there the the the one thing is for sure though is that the mog encounter is like there's some encounters where you're like okay how badass are you
Starting point is 01:37:57 you know uh you can fucking you can punch upwards here but then oh he's he's he's for real and then there's the like oh you think you're cool you know how fucking cool are you yeah uh but it's it's um it's a nice little flavor for i guess uh uh what that difficulty spike is gonna look like so yeah it is a that area is a pretty good indicator of like oh wow then you better pump your health man because stuff's gonna hit like real bad he was also one of those fun bosses they had to patch him because there was a way to jump into his arena with the lapillars outside his uh thing oh no shit jump in there and he wouldn't turn on i was i was literally looking at that hole and i think i made a remark about that like i'm like that looks like the kind of shit where you could like
Starting point is 01:38:54 peek through or arrow him or some shit yeah yeah yeah any any way to see through a boss arena you know although the dude down at the beach in the weeping peninsula is like bait for that almost because you can see the boss that's off standing down by the the end of the the um fort uh ah shit what fort was it the fort at the south of the weeping peninsula uh mourn mourn yeah so you you see the boss gate and you see the boss standing deactivated behind it yeah but they yeah there's no way to get around um anyways so yeah elden ring will continue and um fun stuff fun stuff so we'll be doing that uh tomorrow uh and then yeah there's before you continue and i actually i've been fucking around on my own elden ring file and i have to say i have to wait longer i went like i went
Starting point is 01:39:50 so hard on it the first time that i'm like oh throw myself right back in with a new build or whatever it's like no it's too soon oh interesting like there's there's there's there's too much so i i now i've said i i had a session where i got to um fuck uh whatever it was it was i did a i did a um um oh the french folk here enough french folk heroes grave um uh war dead catacombs oh that fucking thing is bullshit yeah i didn't need i didn't even beat that one in my game i left it and then went and beat the game and forgot wow okay okay so uh i went back i went to that after radon and uh got to the boss of it um and like it was around that time where basically it was just um a it was just a remix of a previous boss right and you're kind of like okay some of these
Starting point is 01:41:02 caves are gonna have the the um the guardian cat the stone cat dog thing um we got our ulcerated trees we got our our our grafted scions um i did definitely finish that session and i kind of went like hmm the size of the game makes this mandatory but fighting the same boss in every different element is getting repetitive um dragons gotta be something beyond that door yeah and it's it's gotta be a thing probably like if we have a hundred of these to do or a thousand of these to do then let's just grab a bear and put it inside the the door and say you have to fight it in close corners you know um and in other cases you've got the dragons where it's like all right there's dragon behavior and then the shit that comes out of its mouth is what's different um and that can
Starting point is 01:41:56 make a huge difference it can it can but the repetitiveness is being felt on these enemy types and they're introducing new enemies as well but not at a rate that and maybe it's just my the direction i'm wandering in but i feel as if i'm not getting introduced to new enemies at a rate that like keeps up with like oh new fresh shit and old repeating shit are like 50 50 so that the next zone will you know bring on more like i'm not getting that it's it's this tough thing and people like you and i are going to encounter this problem much more strongly than what i'm going to call the average player because yeah if you were to truck through the game in a more or less straight line with detours man the enemy variety is fucking crazy but if you're gonna go
Starting point is 01:42:48 through calid and be like i wonder what's over there i wonder what's over there i wonder what's over there i wonder what's over there there's only so much that's associated with the calid location yeah um but like i kind of walk into a boss door going like okay is this just gonna be a room full of jellyfish you know what i mean like and so it's nice when i guess it's like oh well even if it's like a budget answer a budget solution when it was like oh it's an npc invader type boss and um it's the guy who invented uh um what type of like like some kind of um like magic or or yeah i forgot what it was but it was like in that one cave that had like two bosses in it like one of them was like a dude whose name was mentioned in the lore and i was like oh cool
Starting point is 01:43:41 okay yeah that's that's um that's fine it just it just you know and then and then like there's a bunch of resurrection uh necromancy yeah necromancy shit coming happening at the same time you know so it's like okay i can accept just a basically like a glorified human invader boss for variety sake but the same the same goddamn watchdog for the fifth time is is yeah you know so for for me i i had this this moment of like that would start to show up and i would be like uh right and you know there's there's the moment we're like oh this guy again and then you're like oh this guy again and then there's the step past that which is fuck they're reusing this again i never got to that point okay right so like they will they will reuse bosses i think ulcerated
Starting point is 01:44:39 tree spirit might be the worst offender perhaps that's what i was thinking of because it like i hit the hit the third one and went all right all right here we go i think there's like six of them oh boy over the course of the game but at the same time there's so much fucking game what i will say though is that like i it's weird but i can forgive a specific kind of usage or reuse when you drop me in and you go hey it's two um iron virgins i'm like yeah all right we're doing two iron virgins when you drop me in and you go it's a crucible knight and one of those wild fuckers um yeah in in miss begotten and a miss begotten that i'm like okay two different things together creates a new a unique experience for it you know i can take that mix a little bit better um that
Starting point is 01:45:40 feels a little more fresh that fight could be really tough it can be because of the exact freshness you're describing um there there's a there's a couple ones there's a couple dual boss ones in the game in which i walked into them with what i'm gonna overtly state was a overpowered character and came away with oh man here's your like hope you have i hope you're not how do i put this i hope you're not one of those people that refuses to use the ghosts cuz okay okay two motherfuckers are gonna run you down and they're going to start stomping on you the instant you walk through the door i'm yeah so i'm i'm kind of going like uh you know lucy goosey on that i'm just calling it how i feel it in some cases i'm like yeah fuck it some cases no
Starting point is 01:46:37 i think what i do is i kind of glow i take a look at it and i go what is it and it's like if it's big or if it's two things then i'm like yeah i'll call in on that you know and if it's one thing then i'll take a crack at it as is certainly um but it's it's it's it just it all depends on how i'm feeling you know but i definitely know that like um the the feeling of how strong oleg was and the feeling of like um how strong moon veil was like makes me go like well for my own fun i'm gonna i'm gonna go for variety too so i'm not just gonna call an oleg i'm gonna call in perfumer trisha you know yeah i'm gonna call in someone else that's an interesting situation going through the game because it's so broad and because the area is scale so unevenly like more than any
Starting point is 01:47:26 other from software game ever by far you will walk into situations in which you are more than ready to deal with whatever the fuck they're gonna throw at you uh i was fucking around with my my fucked up character that i made uh with you know min maxed and shit and i'm running around the urnia and like i got to a boss that i was able to ice in like a single shot like literally one strike um and the the point isn't that i was able to do that because i min maxed it the point is that if i was playing the regular game and had just missed that and had gone back to do it or to scrape more i still would have fucking one shot that thing no problem like when i was going through kaylid and like the beginning dealing with the minor bosses in the beginning of kaylid and dealing
Starting point is 01:48:18 with the minor bosses at the end of kaylid is a fucking night and day experience yes the dragon barrel is not lower kaylid they are different areas holy shit yeah um but yeah the the way i what if you did dragon barrel first and then went back to leiria because you decided to explain it like leiria turns into a joke what if you walked out from from um um the bestial sanctum and just kept going down you know um you can do that those guys are easy to kill give great exp i um yeah i kind of i think i mentioned it before but the way i'm treating it with the levels more or less is like um i'm spending the the the rewards for boss killing and such on levels and um the grinding stuff for like getting sets and stuff i'm spending on other excuse me
Starting point is 01:49:08 on on other shit um but in the end like i know and i feel deeply in that like cheat because the they're gonna cheat to you they're gonna cheat on you so cheat on them like fuck it who cares it has the widest variety of that in a from software game yeah when the enemies cheat on you in elden rang boy they go real hard yeah so that's my baseline right just absolutely no no no mercy on the fucking cheating cpu um but then i'm putting in my own levels of like but i would have more fun if i did this and i would have more fun if i did that and those are entirely self-imposed and uh i'm willing to you know like mix it up on a at a drop of a hat and just see how it goes because i'm only gonna have one freshman run through this thing you know
Starting point is 01:50:00 so um yeah i i want to i want to do what i what i enjoy the most with it and so far that's been that's been the way it's been um anyways looking forward to like getting some of those teased enemy types more frequently so that we can replace the what i'll call like the starting roster you know um because uh yeah it's it's some of that some of that's getting a little bit like okay long in the tooth we've done it we've seen it um and that's pretty much it so yeah check out woolly versus uh oh i do i do have one last thing i'm seeing some folks talk about how you've over leveled the content um and as somebody who is i love have a content supposedly um but but most importantly is that elden rings uh balancing um is absolutely ready for that
Starting point is 01:51:06 because the way you're particularly the way health scales in that game you can never get enough health that shit will stop being dangerous to you well that's that's what's making me wonder this because like i understand the fact that i was i was using like a very like i was i had like the scar seals on and i was i was using like a a semi naked fucking build or whatever so it was wrecking me anyway i've put on a full set and i've taken the the scar seals off or at least the duplicate certainly so i'll have a more normal sized build now um and um running through kaylid and then going through dragonbarrow and then coming back down after clearing out kaylid to like einsel river it's like oh yeah like those the things in einsel river are not as strong as
Starting point is 01:52:00 the things in the dragonbarrow no not even so they're getting melted simply by virtue of like i paid attention to them in this order instead of that order uh so i that i don't see you know um i expect that to happen liberally because i also then hit mog and went well i'm way too early for this yeah you know so i can so i don't like in terms of being cornered like over leveled i'm like well it depends on where you're standing doesn't it yeah and and really don't worry about it because at some point the game funnels down a little bit and stops being so open and at that point it assumes that you went in and like the maximum statistical difference you can add is like i'm gonna do it in i'm gonna die in three hits instead of two
Starting point is 01:52:47 like it's it's just like enemy health and damage just gets way juiced up and and it's also i know that like everyone's kind of thinking of their own experiences and like yeah of course those are not universal right like that's uh the the the amount you put into any given stat is has a big effect on the feeling of what that level is certainly versus um overall like strength and resistances and so on you know like i've put a vigor at 40 i think at this point um and rebalanced so that i'm less dex and now more strength int yeah um but you know i'm i'm swinging fists around that are capitalizing on int but not to the maximum because they're iced you know so like my build doesn't have the best synergy it just has the cool shit that
Starting point is 01:53:47 makes me happy basically i'm saying more that more than ever before literally don't worry about that concept it's stupid cool yeah yeah um the the the end game bosses only get like marginally easier no like if you throw 100 or 200 extra levels at it and i and i i'm sure there's definitely like if a if i sat down larval tiered and then just really like optimized all these points and then my gear towards like a you know a particular like solid ass build it would massively increase my efficiency oh probably but it wouldn't massively increase my fun so oh i'm that guy i like that uh yeah check us out this week woolly versus um gonna have a i have to like register a bit busy on saturday so we're gonna have to figure something out with getting to
Starting point is 01:54:43 fighting games but um i'll post the schedule so you guys can see what's going on with that so yeah just to stay tuned how about you oh man woolly did you like i i fucking i had a whole schedule planned up for that for the week that i wanted to do and then i was i was hanging out in discord and my friend strident was like hey did you see that stanley parable ultra deluxe came out and it went holy shit it fucking did and i fucking swept my night and played stanley parable ultra deluxe i heard there's some cool stuff in that there's some fucking cool stuff in that game have you played the stanley parable original i have okay so this is great because i don't want to talk too much about stanley parable because well i could talk a little bit
Starting point is 01:55:36 about the original stanley parable it's like a narrative experience game in which it's a walking simulator that fucks with your perception of how a story works by allowing you to constantly second guess and fuck over the narrator by not doing what the narration says and has all these little meta jokes and it's just a cool little fucking game that's really well written and has some genuinely fantastic humor and some great system level shit and it's just a really wonderful little game and then they put out stanley parable ultra deluxe in which i was a little surprised because it didn't seem like the kind of game to get like a extended edition or whatever or a sequel or something like that and it says oh it's got lots of new content and you load into a game
Starting point is 01:56:30 like stanley parable which it's kind of like fucking do whatever and find the content i was a little worried i wouldn't be able to find the new content well luckily enough upon starting the game you just walk past a door that has a giant fucking sign on it this is new content oh that's nice okay i like it has like flashing fucking neon pointing towards it and it's horribly garish and it stands out like a fuck um and solid the new content is very very very well integrated into the old content and it is it's not a sequel but there is so much new shit in it that it could be okay like it's it's like 60 percent more shit it's it's from it's fucking huge okay um and it's really really really good the original was pretty good so i
Starting point is 01:57:48 believe that it it has what i referred to as the best joke in a video game which which absolutely got me and there was a period of time in which me and my chat were of a genuine consideration that we may turn the corner and see frogs eating fractions yeah okay okay i mean um i know it's excellent i saw like that it's like uh i saw that it continues to be uh fucking wild by the nature of one of the new achievements that it has there's a bunch of them there's a bunch of wonderful new achievements in it one of which is incompletable for the next decade yeah so there was an achievement in stanley parable which at least one person got called go outside which is don't play stanley parable for i think it was seven years and it has now been updated in stanley parable ultra deluxe
Starting point is 01:58:53 add to the achievement super go outside which is don't play stanley parable for 10 years jesus yeah oh it used to be five used to be five okay that's crazy so i'm as people will get angry and i'm sure it annoys you willy i'm a little more cavalier about the way that i talk about games and their features in terms of what people can consider spoilers but the nature of stanley parable is such that the the the content is the information so i really don't want to talk much about it at all other than to say it's absolutely excellent and much like the first game really pushed against what you thought it could do with its format this second game pushes farther and in much weirder directions i would say that um the better
Starting point is 01:59:54 the content is the more respectful you are of its of its spoilers i would say that you know um or and also how it's like how much it's integral right like outer wilds certainly or you know shit about like inscription when we talked about it for example you know but uh yeah yeah okay um is what a fucking journey for half-life mods still half-life mods still continuing to be like these these pillars of industry so interesting i saw i saw uh i think it was doc talking about how everybody talks about how half-life two is so influential but it's not because there are very few games that you're like oh it's like half-life right but i think you got that reputation because half-life mods were all incredibly influential
Starting point is 02:00:57 yeah like fuck um the end the it's the engine that's actually important the source engine was way more important than half-life and you can feel that man you played through half-life two relatively recently you can feel that that game is like yo this is the engine game half-life one you want to play half-life one half-life one not two okay whatever you can feel it there hey look we can script an event ooh ladders wow it's crazy um just play half-life two that game's weird yeah the i was i was definitely gonna come back around of course it's just like well you know we already fucking did this i was like oh but there's the other remake and then the bruh bruh bruh oh yeah no that whole
Starting point is 02:01:49 thing that game's just so weird like in half-life two like very beginning there's a puzzle where you have to put bricks on a seesaw so that you can climb up out of a window and it's some banal shit it's some fucking baby's first video game shit but i remember playing it back in 2001 holy shit i put the physics wow so it's you know there's what's like what's the most recent thing to like do that where it's like i can't believe video games can achieve this and and like l.a noir the face cap the face capture oh man yeah that's just crazy still like i'm like has there been anything in like the last like five years where it's where you're just like the bread the bread the bread okay yep totally totally banal
Starting point is 02:02:50 completely unimpressive like for the moment for what the thing is and like 50 years from now it'll be like who gives a shit but yeah yeah yeah no for what we have now by virtue of our limitations that bread is insane i remember i remember telling you about the bread and you're like yeah that sounds pretty cool and then like i saw the clip of you seeing the bread and you look like you were gonna jump out of your skull like how how yeah it's it's recognition of our current limitations like games are not yet reality but then something just comes in and goes like oh we're closer than you think shame the um the boktai light daylight system never never took off never caught on never caught on you know but uh yeah so yeah uh stanley parable ultra deluxe is an easy 10 out of 10
Starting point is 02:03:53 recommend to anyone uh it actually may i was i was very i was very worried that it would make a terrible game for streaming because of the amount of narration nope it ends up being a great back and forth that game's incredible everybody should check it out particularly nerds who are like what can a video game do with the medium isn't it weird to live in a world where like there's now like liberal 10 out of 10s that you can drop on multiple things oh yeah that used to be like this is gonna be a hill i will die on and i'll argue it and it'll be my one thing and now it's like oh yeah man i just fucking played uh i just played uh uh uh disco elysium and it's perfect and then right out right hot off the heels of like 13 centinals which is not 10
Starting point is 02:04:46 but and that was perfect but it was like 9.9 you know what i mean um you know and and i don't know like you're like oh yeah um fucking how fun was sifu it was fucking excellent it was top top the bottom yep just casual era of of just 10s are dropping left and right and you're like oh cool perfect games yeah it's wild because i remember vividly and i'm sure you do like 1998 was held up as the holy grail of video games for like a decade and it was because half-life ocarina of time and metal gar sald came out in the same year and you're like could you believe three games this good came out in one year like yeah i can believe that i could believe that easy it's especially weird after like the seventh generation like the 360 era where like games became garbage for a while
Starting point is 02:05:42 and like the the we got that we got the increased output but not the increased quality yeah um it's just it used to be such a sparing badge to give out in in some ways and you know and you're like oh no like there's been some just fucking solid top to bottom games that come along and they go this is what we're about we're gonna just focus on this one thing and crush it and do it like no one else does and you know who's fault this is the mitzu the 40 on 40 any yeah and you know you know what game broke the seal on this whole madness uh what was it what the what was it nintendo it was nintendo yeah nintendo it was nintendo getting a 40 out of 40 and me going holy shit 40 out of 40 for nintendo and i picked up nintendo and i'm like this is a fucking tamagotchi
Starting point is 02:06:40 with graphics what the fuck is this a 40 to somebody who really wants a dog but has a small place that they can't have a dog can't get a dog yeah that's it a contextual 40 wow cool man the 30 i'm reading a quote the 30 360 slash ps3 era was the absolute nadir of video games which now i'm gonna have to go look up what the word nadir means the lowest point oh god yeah that was a rough period well i mean there's Stanley parables here and it's good there's only one era in which the the term shovelware existed shovelware was not a thing before or after the era of shovelware you know yeah anyway all right let's move on i played that i also took a look at tear down have you seen tear down what's that okay so you look that up while i'm talking
Starting point is 02:07:50 tear down is a game that's using like a voxel look everything's made out of tiny little cubes and is a destruction heist game in which they drop you into a completely destructible environment oh and go steal all this shit in 60 seconds and you you are going around this completely destructible environment with trucks and guns yo blastcore uh shoutouts blastcore yeah kind of and shovels and and hammers and you are trying to build a perfect route to hit all the items and escape within 60 seconds uh it's great it's also technically like stellar like it looks incredible despite its little blocky outlines it's also insanely hard like insanely hard like i started running roadblocks within an hour or two okay so blastcore but then you can get out on foot
Starting point is 02:08:48 and then do it first person yeah it's a heist game yeah that that you're gonna be you're gonna be heisting by going okay i need to get this so what i'm gonna do is i'm gonna knock out this window and build some planks so i can jump to the car that i have set up and then i blew out the wall so the car can drive into the building then i jump out of the car grab the item hop back out of the car drive down here dump the car into the pool because that's a that's a you know bonus objective grab the new car head up here grab this one drive through this blow this you know that kind of the idea yeah it's interesting because the art style is like uh it's voxels but it's in a lot of cases they're lit um very realistically so yeah it's got fancy rtx lighting so from a distance you
Starting point is 02:09:36 you're like you're not sure that you're looking at a voxel you know um yeah it's it's a weird thing because you have an infinite amount of time to set up the stage but the run is always going to be 60 seconds um yeah i feel definitely like blastcore was a potential genre that never got explored i mean maybe uh but it had been in early access forever and finally came out and it is stellar but again very tough it's also a really cool technical game because you're just you know tearing all this shit apart and then fucking driving a truck through a building and all that kind of cool shit how much more to say about tear down honestly it's like it's a good game but does it surpass the level of environmental destruction seen in the first person acclaimed shooter black
Starting point is 02:10:32 yeah black doesn't even have environmental destruction but it promised black has a that you can stand a lot of complicated scripting but it promised that you could stand at one end of the level and keep shooting until you shot all the way to the other end of the level yeah that game was called red faction and came out like six years before black red faction is fucking cool yeah i tested that for a bit that was it was fun to test you test uh the first one or gorilla the first one not gorilla yeah and last but not least rogue legacy two finally hit fucking 1.0 did you play the original rogue legacy play the original rogue legacy never beat it but really enjoyed it um yeah not many people beat it that game was hard
Starting point is 02:11:25 and i saw this i saw the i saw the the reviews come in at like nines across the board yeah um so rogue legacy one was a really long time ago uh when was it and rogue legacy one was like fucking 2013 so seven years ago um and uh they're using like guilty gear style 3d to emulate the 2d style of uh the original rogue legacy okay uh i don't know if you've seen what it looks like uh it looks really good i nine years oh nine years i just saw the promo r13's only seven years ago shut up i did not look at it in action i kind of just assumed it was gonna be similar right so yeah yeah no go look at a trailer uh it looks really good um and it it's everything that you would want out of a sequel to rogue legacy it has the good feel
Starting point is 02:12:31 on the buttons like you you touch on the jump you touch on the fucking attacks you do the dash you do the air dash it feels really good it feels about 95 percent of the way to being hollow night mm in terms of feel to the point where when you learn the dash in the air it asks you to do a little miniature path of pain series of platforming challenges that use like the the the what do you call it the little you get a new bounce that you can do off enemies and it is this is 3d this is this is not 3d yep it's good old guilty gear looks hand animated oh shit there it is it is 3d oh shit okay wow nice cool right yeah i just saw a close-up right on uh it feels super super good the all the new classes feel like great little uh character classes in their own little action game
Starting point is 02:13:44 there's a lot more like abilities you actually get to learn the graphics look incredible the music is great like it's just the total package and i remember the original had some references to like different genres mixed in there as well uh i think there's like a chudly reference nice and early at some point haven't gotten that far yet okay uh but yeah it's just it feels really good it's just it's just really good i'm going to be streaming it again this week because i like it so much hollow night is not a bad pedigree it's not like i said it's some i'm seeing folks say like it's not as good as hollow i was like no it's not i didn't say that i said it's getting there in just in terms of feel when you jump relax people i'm never gonna say anything's as good
Starting point is 02:14:29 as hollow night until silk song comes out if it ever does if it ever does it won't they're allowed they were gonna give it to us for free they're allowed they made too much game and accidentally created a sequel song coming they don't know how to stop point i would like to see an interview of the moment they decided they had made too much game yeah yeah like at some point they're making silk song and they're like guys we accidentally made something that's 50% of hollow night like i i would like to think it was um they weren't paying attention and then they gave it to someone to do a play test and the person came back and said okay just did the first run through it uh 60 hours you know like uh hmm yeah okay oh yeah hmm okay um can you call nintendo
Starting point is 02:15:30 or someone and tell them the dlc plans have changed they can't they don't know how to stop uh and it's like what a bunch of like half a dozen australians like not even like four people i don't know how to do it i mean god bless until until silk song comes out you can play rogue legacy too it's good maybe not until silk song comes out because who the fuck knows well also also it's it's like rogue legacy is about being a roguelike so yeah it's very different but what if silk songs about being a roguelike you don't know could you fucking imagine dude like yeah you beat the game and new game plus it's just rogue mode just scrambles every room
Starting point is 02:16:28 yeah and also it's a hollow knight too why not why why not why not why not beat silk song chalice dungeons start and it says hollow knight too chalice dungeons just start sure why not all right so anyway if you want to go down to twitch.tv slash pat stairs at this week at 4 p.m. pd t or 7 p.m. edt i'm gonna be playing rogue legacy i'm gonna be playing a roguelike named nightmare reaper which is kind of like a doom roguelike and i'm gonna try out noita i don't know if you're familiar with noita it's a weird wizard game that it also has the voxels not noi too love too no no that's a that's a different thing okay no that's that's different and also i've decided after last week and we talked about cox and i was like i got to get in on
Starting point is 02:17:21 this so i'm just gonna go through the second runner do you know how many of my colleagues died back there bang dingo okay yep like second runner is just like hey you want to talk you want to talk about a fucking 10 out of 10 you talk about second runner if you feel like just some bullshit get your head set out and just just like for like two seconds put it on and fire a vector cannon and then take it off um so i want to i just want to say that that front mission so the enders the second runner is that very rare 10 out of 10 that is so 10 that it makes it so that the prequel might as well never have existed at all you're better off not having playing having played part one zone of the enders one is fully invalidated by zone of the enders two but it's
Starting point is 02:18:31 nice that they summarize it in a 20 minute movie it is nice anyway that's it for me cool all right um let's take a quick bathroom break yeah let's do that i'm gonna take the dog he probably has to share brb okay okay let's take a quick word from our sponsors give me a second flipping the bird at the dog double guns double guns this time what are you gonna do what are you gonna do you stupid you don't even know what this is

Starting point is 02:26:09 purchase within two days of sign up thank you stitchfix thanks stitchfix okay this week we're also sponsored by express vpn who are basically for me at least uh fighting back the bullshit that is uh not being allowed to watch cool things because of where I live shit sucks it's real simple don't care for it I don't like the fact that um I can't watch things in some cases on services that I'm paying for yeah that's an outrageous nonsense simply because I'm in Canada you know I'm paying for it like what the fuck why can't I what why like no I hate that that sucks so um region locking horseshit is a thing of the past when you get yourself uh yeah express vpn you just click the button real simple and you say I'm here now and then bam it updates
Starting point is 02:27:15 to be like oh shit that's where you are and your services no longer treat you like an asshole and they show you everything available to you wherever you choose to be and I use that on my phone on a regular basis because um fuck off stop stop hating on me because of where I am also it it's not bad that it also keeps you private as well if you want to connect to that McDonald's Wi-Fi I don't recommend it but should you choose to do so if I can't stop you from connecting to that McDonald's Wi-Fi for the love of God put some protection on get yourself covered and uh you know keep your anonymity so that's what Express VPN is about they got fast speeds you can stream in hd zero buffering uh compatible with your phones laptops all your
Starting point is 02:28:16 consoles smart TVs and more servers in 94 different countries and it works with all your streaming services yeah good coverage on that so be smart stop paying full price for streaming services only getting access to a fraction of their content get your money's worth at expressvpn.com slash superbeast that's the link expressvpn.com slash superbeast uh to get an extra three months of express vpn for free thanks express vpn thanks express vpn there you go and last but not least once you are able to definitely not once you are able to access and listen to uh whatever you want because you're not being restricted anymore you want to do some with some good headphones and you want to do so do so with some no with no wires to deal with really
Starting point is 02:29:19 because oh god no why hey you see the headphones somewhere right now not a single wire get your wires out because wires are bad wires bad you know internet historian had the had it right I was I was talking to some friends just this weekend and you know I had a moment where I realized that there are some problems that life surpassed unintentionally there was once a time when you would regularly talk about how oh fuck I gotta go get some new controllers the the animal chewed through mine yeah or I had stored them and you oh you gotta save space by wrapping them around and you wrap the wire bag oh wow I've made this two feet shorter because I can't get the cake out of the fucking wire now that sucks because a lot of the times your controller
Starting point is 02:30:11 would still be in good shape the buttons are fine the sticks are fine but the wire fucked up and that's terrible uh because wires are terrible and wires have been letting us down for our entire lives I mean oh well they served a purpose I was thinking about wires just now bit myself you know they served a purpose but now their time is done the age of wireless is upon us this is along where are we going with this the point is Raycon you get wireless headphones you get them with uh good battery life you don't have to worry about the constant recharge 32 hour battery life on them um compact portable charging case and you're getting quality audio for half the price of other premium audio brands they've got uh they've got you covered with the
Starting point is 02:31:01 easy to use uh comfortable fits and in general um I think that it is a very good thing to not have to untangle every two seconds I know a punch mom over there's using her Raycons on a daily basis they've become pretty much the go-tos and she's also taken calls on a regular basis because they got that built-in mic as well so yeah get yourself the number one preferred way to ignore your husband get your there you just put them in and then every time someone calls you I didn't hear you had I had them in the sound was blocked I didn't you know and you're like well take them out I need to talk to you and you're like what I can't I hold uh hold on gotta gotta unpa gotta what you what well what was that what were you uh never mind okay all right
Starting point is 02:31:58 uh yeah so there you go check them out mother's day's coming up oh there you go you got a perfect opportunity I would not trust my mother with wires bring your parents into the future save them save them with with the with the wireless way you can go to buyraycon.com slash superbeast to get 15 off uh your mother's day order this is a specifically a mother's day uh variation here tell your mama much you love her make sure she hears it in crystal clear audio quality with Raycon that's buyraycon.com slash superbeast for 15 off your mother's day order buyraycon.com slash superbeast considering every time I call my mom right now she's like telling me to telling me to speak up
Starting point is 02:32:52 because the connection is no good yep like the connections fine mom yeah no maybe somewhere this headphones are in some order so you know like the um you know the the like my mom hits the speaker button and turns the phone sideways and leans her head back and she's doing like the audio equivalent of like showing your parents a meme and then they put their glasses on the tip of their nose so like yeah yeah it's the audio equivalent of that um get the wires out of their life save them thanks Raycon thanks Raycon okay all right let's get into the news the news oh man good thing nothing happened this week yeah look at him he's sticking his butt up he's doing that that pounce pounce pose
Starting point is 02:33:48 oh he's doing some stupid bullshit he's an idiot um couple things happened we covered the big one certainly uh squeenix selling idos and such has been covered so you know we talked in depth about um the legacy of these uh these old japanese companies doing bitch juice doing their things but there's more revelations that have have come forth indeed uh so we were just talking about sega and uh sonic and we were just talking about uh even the inclusion of guest star from ballon wonderworld over in uh sonic smackdown and that was pretty cool but it was a shame because you're like damn that was a new possibly promising franchise what happened
Starting point is 02:34:49 uh and then this week a couple days ago uh yujinaka legendary uh game designer came out and basically put a big twitter thread up uh in which he disclosed that there was a lawsuit between him in square enix and that he was removed as the director of ballon wonderworld about half a year before the release um and the proceedings are over and he's no longer bound by the rules or any any any nda's and so he'd like to speak out and in his speaking out he goes on to describe that essentially um the reason why the game uh underperformed and uh why the game essentially came out and sucked was because uh he was removed by uh just about everybody on the team not wanting to work with him anymore and wild why would no one want to work with you yujin and that led to a
Starting point is 02:35:51 number of changes and of course him him not being there to ensure the vision uh it became something different and then it came out and disappointed everybody and so um you know he understands that people why people are disappointed with the project and such um he went on a pretty long twitter thread uh describing essentially you know his personal perspective on uh how it went down with sega and why he what he was upset about and why but um the overall general narrative here though seems to be that uh it wasn't just the higher ups it was seems like almost the entire team just didn't want to work with him anymore you know and that paints a very different picture from a board of directors picking you up and firing you you know i have a familial relation
Starting point is 02:36:55 that is a little older than me who has had a consistent issue with keeping their job and you ask them hey man what happened at your job i thought things were going well and they'll tell you the same story they've been telling you for 25 years oh man my boss was out to get me man oh they fucking hated me since the day i showed up everybody there's an asshole i don't know what their problem is they just fired me for no reason and man there's only so many times you can hear that story before you go uh huh so uh huh well why wait for the modern incarnation let's go back 25 years shall we travel with me if you will back to uh not 25 years but a little shy of that uh the era a little bit the era that is 2002 when the dreamcast has launched and uh
Starting point is 02:38:06 unfortunately is not being received uh the way that sega had hoped uh it was released as an in-between generation um trying to i guess like carve itself out in its own way and there's a complex history of um the partnership that sega had with microsoft and what what what led to some of sega's major troubles um but some of that is not all sega's fault however there's a standout interview that uh shout outs to mr feels of course for pointing out um who actually credits dan from giga boots on pulling this one up but it's an old story love this and i remember this because we talked about this a long time ago but i remember this being internalized as uh peter more had a really bad interaction with the heads of sega and it wasn't necessarily the specifics of eugenaca
Starting point is 02:39:04 so when he was reporting in to japanese uh to sega japanese sega japan's headquarters um on how the performance of uh uh you know everything recently was not uh going well it was it was less than receptive so to speak uh the quote was uh eugenaca maker of sonic is in the room now he and i have a love and hate relationship this is peter more of course uh and we show him this and it's subtitled in japanese and when it comes to the piece he just slams his hand on the table and yells this is ridiculous you've made you made them say this sega is the great brand nobody would ever say this you falsified the data uh he's talking about what he heard back from from test audiences totally reasonable reaction he gets in my face and so i tell the translator
Starting point is 02:39:58 tell him to fuck off and the poor guy look at me and says there's no expression in japanese for this and i said i know there is and that was it that's bullshit that is a lie yeah yeah yeah no no translator rip your sleeves off get real low into the slav squat look him up and go kura so the poor guy looks at him and says there's no expression for that and he says i know there is and that was the last time i ever set foot in sega's offices so this was a story about peter more leaving sega uh before joining ea and i had heard that many years ago but i had never had it locked down to yujinaka exactly unnamed it was executive exactly it was like the sega execs were out of touch because in the meeting where they showed him data they're like fuck you
Starting point is 02:41:03 you're lying everyone loves sega this isn't real that's like oh no dude like that was a hilarious thing but now it's like oh it was specifically yuji um and of course this is the same yujinaka that walked into the development studio of a sega game said uh oh this looks good uh just fucking fire everybody here but the engineers who made this engine will just steal it and put it on sonic team they can make the new knights game despite the fact that um they didn't think that anyone in the room could speak japanese which many of them could that's yeah that that fucking sucks man and the thing is too is i like um it's interesting because i never had any again i didn't have that context and i didn't uh uh you know know about that part of it and i'm thinking
Starting point is 02:41:57 how over the years it's like if he didn't kind of have this weird like twitter legal hissy fit moment which then kind of self impermanence what it was like with him on the team it nobody would have had any of this shit to say about him because in my head i'm like yujinaka legendary creator from way back in the day um couldn't get anything going after sonic but damn there were some cool projects and rodeo the sky soldier and all that stuff like every time we talked about like these you know um new ip's that never picked off i've always been like ah but you know like he made some cool stuff like it sucks that it never it never picked up um very fondly you know and and like this now in context is like oh dude you might be kind of a dick to work with men
Starting point is 02:42:48 maybe that's the problem where you talk about these these old creators right and you discover that you've never even heard like let's let's let's remove positive let's just skip right to you've never heard anything that wasn't negative about this person ever every single piece of information that ever filtered down to me about yujinaka was that he was a fucking asshole and now we're we're given the the the situation in which he's literally bluntly telling on himself going they all betray me they are all they every person in the room hated me they are all bad like oh yeah okay and now you kind of start and then you and so like you're trying to paint a picture here right that's one side and over on the other side oh my god oh my god Jesus christ
Starting point is 02:43:56 okay uh i thought i had heaven raised in in in my house like when when the sun was that time of day man it's that time of day what can i do uh that's wild anyways um the uh on the other side you've got um yusuzuki pushing as hard as he can for shenmu three you know and and on uh virtual fighter going the way that it does and it's just like oh what the fuck happened guys and these are these are the people that are board members at the time too you know i'll tell you what happened it's i guess run by criminals um some speaking of criminals and sega like some people were talking about as well like it started people saying that like oh it might be because of uh having because negoshi had to answer to uh yujinaka at the time that like
Starting point is 02:44:50 that's part of the group that he was unhappy with and part of the reason why he left you know be surprised so um it's it's such an interesting thing because again like dude didn't have to say anything but um and well for what it's worth ballon underworld came out and it being unfinished surprises no one so him feeling the need to explain why uh that is the case is not unwarranted um i'm sure like if your people are like yo don't you make good games what the fuck happened with this one you want to come out and explain it but in the process you make yourself look like the jerk on that nobody wants to work with on the team um then you're not going to be the you're not going to sound like the good guy quote unquote in the situation uh and and and at the same time
Starting point is 02:45:36 not to assume that like the the sega fucking higher ups are quote unquote the good guys on the team but like um when you have to go down the list of people who didn't who got rid of you and you have like 12 commas like you know it's a bit odd um so anyway it explains at least why that game came out unfinished i i still think the absolute funniest and it's only funny in hindsight because of minding number nine because that was such a bummer and such a like a fucking fucking racket but i remember when unifune left it was pretty unremarkable but then every single goddamn thing that had mega man on it was fucking shit canned and it was just the most feel bad fucking thing in the world because it looked like capcom was just stomping out mega man was red ash the first nft
Starting point is 02:46:38 uh maybe it might have been it might have been it might have been it might have been it might have been did that anything happen with that at all it it just launched and took money and then that was it so it was just it was just it just took your money that was it so maybe uh like so in a fune was put you're out and oh why are they stomping out mega man and then you find out that like oh we everyone had it backwards because what happened was is in a fune feels it coming down the pipe right he feels that he has squandered millions of dollars and is an asshole and doesn't do anything good at the company and he can feel the sharks so he's like you know what people fucking love they fucking love mega man so if i go out there and start up
Starting point is 02:47:41 like five mega man projects they can't fire me because then they'll have to cancel those and then they'll look bad and then his boss went i don't care man get the fuck out of here i'll cancel anything to get rid of you but what if you have me back on with a consulting fee to save the projects get the fuck out of my office okay all right i'm out i'm gone i'm gone sorry i have to i have to applaud the attempt to stop your impending doom but man that dude burned bridges like it was a living anyway um that was a different bridge at a different company this over here you've got uh yeah just the souring over here and the the the the backstory at least somewhat behind um the the fucking the balan wonderworld launch so um that's happening
Starting point is 02:49:00 and he also didn't create sonic wasn't he the artist and then what was the story with that no wait i'm mixing up um i was like i was like he'd been credited as the creator of sonic the hedgehog for like decades because he was the director on that project but i don't think he had anything to do with actually the creation of the character okay i gotcha gotcha um alto oshima was apparently the artist and yuji was the programmer so well but somehow he he masterminded that into i made sonic yeah anyway so uh that that thread like backfired and um didn't didn't didn't seem to go why everybody betray me i made sonic um anyway some other things came out it's really interesting and this is the
Starting point is 02:50:01 kind like this next story actually is the kind that makes me kind of wish i was still getting the updated compliance reports uh because i'm sure you could if you really wanted to i don't care that much i'm just i'm saying it but i i'm not going to give a shit after this that's true um no with a lot of uh the changes that we've been talking about in regards to playstation plus premium there's some stuff coming down the pipeline about how that's going to unroll um in fact if i'm not mistaken yeah the the pre-story here one of them was they're going to unroll the new tiers and uh they're stopping anyone from stacking up current plan purchases so that they can't uh they can't yeah activate them once the the rollover occurs
Starting point is 02:50:57 so that makes sense sure um but uh going hand in hand with this is a new guideline any games on playstation priced 34 dollars or higher must mandatory have a two hour game trial and uh that's going to apply to yeah yeah anything uh that is essentially considered full price so they're putting a 34 dollars or more is there is what they're going to call like the full price although big gulf between that and 60 bucks but in any case that's ready for a lot of games that cost 33 dollars that's a fucking huge one um very very very interesting because we had to do lots of testing on these types of things whenever there were like limited scope demos but the description here doesn't seem to be even like content limited it seems to be about a
Starting point is 02:52:00 time limit so um if the game costs over 34 bucks and like you can then you're like i'm kind of thinking about how people in the smash brothers classics would go and play all those games and try to beat the game within the the 10 minute time limit like that's absolutely going to start being the case if you're talking about full game demos available for people um and then also those demos are going to be up for they have to be up for at least one year after launch uh and my initial thing was okay but how are you going to deal with everyone being pissed off that they have to do a ton more work for your platform now that you've put this uh this guideline out and uh the the sony has specified that they will be generating the the trials themselves no additional work from
Starting point is 02:52:59 the developers oh that's fascinating because that means that takes it out of the developer's hands to like hide bullshit completely that means that unless you want to just tank the first two hours of your game well it's here's exactly what that's going to look like it means that on a software level they're just gonna uh on an os level sony's gonna roll out a two hour time limit that just counts down and stops you know um and it'll also probably come with like you know no save data or whatever um but and and by taking it out of the developer's hands you make a lot of people not have to do a bunch of extra work and they're gonna be happy about that however there are definitely going to be a lot of developers that don't have a product that can withstand the two hours
Starting point is 02:53:52 that are not going to be happy about the possibility that they'll essentially hurt sales because their game will be exposed for that limitation and now we're at the steam level except this is part of the PlayStation plus thing so this is the subscription for online that enables you to have this kind of refund system as opposed well so it's not a refund system though it's an intended demo um whereas through steam you can steam lets you treat it like a demo but you you have to file for the refund and not and you have to spend the money to begin with whereas here you're not you know um it's fucking great for players this is a humongously awesome thing to have rolled out for people that like are like yeah this shouldn't be tied behind PlayStation
Starting point is 02:54:42 plus but it's still a good feature nonetheless it is um yeah anyone who's who's trying to make that their mind up on that that's the like you know the the best way to just like get through cut through that question of like uh like should i buy that you know hey guys what do you think it's like you just answered by trying it your fucking self um and the the the the the next question is so once this becomes a standard feature do we now enter a realm where we create games that can hide as much as possible within that first two hours from people in the demo you know yeah so i'm excited to see so you you've worked with sony compliance you would know how they would respond to this but what i see is a situation in which the game costs thirty dollars for the first three hours
Starting point is 02:55:37 and then the rest of the game is labeled a dlc add-on and i can only imagine like people at sony just like rolling their eyes and me like go fuck yourselves this is obviously in violation of the fucking standard yeah um a lot of demos every demo that was released like before i guess like this type of thing you're always going through a negotiation process with them and there's they're giving you um permission on a case by case basis right like the if your game has you know is like this length or it's this type of game whatever the case is you know like if nir wants to come out have that little section and that's unique to the demo that's not actually a part of the full main game that's going to launch then um they got that they get that approved with sony specifically for
Starting point is 02:56:33 that project it doesn't mean necessarily that it would they would okay it for everything you know um and uh that is going to continue in fact i think one of the things specified uh alongside the information about these demos is that if you would rather release a content limited demo or a specific exclusive type of demo they're going to continue to allow you to put those out and you can release that in lieu of a like system times two hour demo so that's cool because stuff like nir i like that it's a the demo was actually an early experience that like pays off in the in the full game you know in some cases the save carrying over for you know dragon's dogma or um what was the other thing recently something else um the yakuza six demo was great what did it do it was the full game by
Starting point is 02:57:32 accident yes that's true true right right right right um so yeah uh the fact that people can still go and make their own you know custom demos as they would want to glad to see that that's mentioned there as well so this is nothing but just good for people that that that um good for the consumer again it should be uh yeah it should be for everybody not just uh subscribers but it's a fucking solid ass move i think dragon quest 11 probably at the best demo of like the the modern era it was like the first full chapter of the game was like 10 hours long and it would just carry right over it was it was crazy well my favorite part about this news is the implied background conversation that is but wait people can beat my game in an hour and a half then what's your
Starting point is 02:58:26 problem huh then why is it more than 34 dollars but uh but so yeah that's it it's yeah i mean it's the implied background conversation a really short version of this which is people going well i mean the quality of the video game doesn't necessarily correlate to its price and its length yada yada yada it's like give me a give me a fucking break if your game is 40 bucks and 90 minutes long like you you you've stretched the argument past the breaking point and it's now totally absurd now and i'm i i have in the past talked about i like short experiences i'm the person who will have no problem with a tight 10 hour delay you know game like i'm i'm the person that's not gonna uh uh complain about it when it's a really high quality short experience i'm also
Starting point is 02:59:32 you know like you can understand when when um you you see these games that like they put the time they put the effort into the time and then there's hollow night on the other end of the spectrum where it just like it goes forever and it's high quality and it's not as expensive as it should be that's wild but uh yeah this presents a very clear statement that essentially says you can make that short shorter than two hour game but you know why is the price that way movies have actually given a pretty reasonable portrayal here whereas if i'm gonna go to the theater and i'm gonna pay like more than three times the ticket cost of a film to do a film what the that better be the best fucking film in the world is it the best fucking film in the world
Starting point is 03:00:29 no then get the fuck out of here there's an asterisk in the form of let's say there's a i don't know a dog ending that you can unlock by just like doing some wild shit for an hour then it's like okay you technically can hit credits but it's like a an omake you know that'll be something that people can do is they can grab a game sprint and then unlock whatever you can with the with the with the demo but overall um yeah pro consumer shit it's good steam already doing it round about by having you people try it out and then refund it is an indirect version this is a more direct version that straight up allows you to do it and hopefully um you know it forces others to match suit and and follow along
Starting point is 03:01:20 that's good um also that playstation plus thing is also being bundled with playstation now and they're also going to take the a lot of the old playstation one and two and three games that you could download and bring them to the ps5 but it's not a total list so who the fuck knows what's going on with that uh yeah they put out a thing with the they put out a post talking about the 700 plus or so games that are included yeah but it doesn't have a list right but it doesn't how about this how about put metal gear solid one and metal gear solid four and the fucking hd collection on there how about that the stranded games the real the real strand games the ones that can't escape
Starting point is 03:02:14 so i can fucking get on it because boy looking into that was a pain in the ass man it's amazing how at during a current or upcoming generation exclusives are the huge deal that moves the systems and like make the console library what it is and then in retrospect they become the biggest pain in the ass in the world oh god like i don't know when it was but i remember like fuck oops hold on i locked the wife out i don't remember when it was but like the moment where i looked at an exclusive and go oh that's gonna be a pain in the fucking ass to stream or cover in the future yeah it's it's just it's so fucking wild that it's like the old metal gear games get ported up all you know solid original and everything gets ported up as well um and then
Starting point is 03:03:13 you hit four and then you like like three hits 3ds and then you hit four and you can't do anything with it it is locked and then the generation after that konami's no longer going console exclusive so it's fine you know and then everything uh um then then that gets ported like released on like xbox and shit as well but as time goes forward four remains the only one this is locked and fucking exclusive playstation three you can't do shit about it um and it's built luckily that games literally 60 cutscenes and it's but it's like it's like and it was so built for that console with the installation system and like all like you know it was such a like yeah it was it was it was the exclusive you know um but you look back on it with time and then it becomes a pain in
Starting point is 03:04:06 the fucking ass yep uh anyway so anyway rounding out a couple other things going on um mentioned sifu earlier they just released their content roadmap um i did not expect to see that phrase associated with sifu 2022 content roadmap um in spring they're adding difficulty options an advanced training mode an outfit selection uh fuck yeah to advance training mode um yeah to hard mode because i need it because i did everything in that game i need i need the game to get harder summer they're doing advanced scoring so you can see examples of like uh no pendant one health point no guard stronger enemies golden staff bullet time etc um for better for different scores new outfits and gameplay modifiers uh then in fall a replay editor is coming with more
Starting point is 03:05:10 modifiers and more outfits and then in winter a new game mode called arenas is dropping yeah that that needs that's bloody palace that needs that should be the first one well looks like they're gonna need time um but it doesn't matter because hey these are all also free wow that's a good number so love that number sifu continuing to crush it shout out slow clap awesome um yeah that spring one drops actually this week so lit um yeah me what day tomorrow oh shit yeah it's the difficult wonder how much harder it's gonna be well however harder it gets having an advanced training mode means you can lab it
Starting point is 03:06:07 like it was the number one thing i felt when i went into the training mode was just like oh my god i need more because the game gives you more so give me more you know i bet it's gonna be way way harder after watching the balancing updates and watching how people went through it yeah why the fuck not um fucking great game a bunch of free shit coming out they deserve it that's awesome uh and then a couple other announcements as well just a little psas about some some cool looking new games uh one there's a game called thunder ray uh which looks pretty sick um it is essentially punch out hand drawn oh thank you for the link i appreciate that and uh you know if you've watched us playing wonderful one on one you'll know that is just punch out
Starting point is 03:07:15 you'll know we appreciate a good fucking punch out when we see it same goes for delta rune uh it makes me really happy when unexpected punch out just shows up and and both of those games deliver it and so yeah thunder ray appears to just be like 80s anime not anime 80s animation cartoon animation style um like ali you know yeah um punch just boxing against uh fucking monsters and robots and all kind of cool shit and his name's thunder ray um you know what call it tj combos greatest adventure yeah i can see that looks fucking sick where where's the switch port of punch out don't don't ask painful questions what's up with that don't ask painful questions um something else that just dropped as well um yeah poor went out for arms before we get
Starting point is 03:08:29 anywhere near a punch out because that's a fucking current one anyway um something is dropped called ultra age and this is a uh what appears to be kind of character actiony looking thing from dangin and um yeah i don't know just let's wait i always forget is dangin the one that's evil are they what did they what will happen they're the ones with the fucking the the fucking no no they're not what's the one that was evil with the with the cave story oh necales okay my mistake i'm sorry dangin i did not mean to be smart you well anyway they're they're they're the publisher they're not the developer in in any case but uh uh ultra age is being developed by next stage ink uh there's also visual darts and intro games okay there's a
Starting point is 03:09:34 lot of companies on this list um but yeah uh oh no wait yet dangin is evil which one dangin no i know sorry which what was what was the what was the story oh they they just don't pay people oh fuck yeah okay they just don't pay people cool put the game out and then they're like it's our money though cool cool cool cool cool cool devil engine the fucking devil engine story right all right oh man all right well anyway it's a it's a character actiony looking game that looks pretty cool call all trade check it out if you think it suits your fancy but yeah there's a stage in it that looks literally like the train yard in devil may cry five it looks like they yeah i know i the exact
Starting point is 03:10:24 first time i ever saw this game i thought it was somebody's mod i mean train yards are not like obviously like that unique of an environment for an area but it happens to have the exact same you know like placement and patterns of it anyway um but yeah uh could be interesting that just dropped uh and then uh boy oh boy we finally got the full breakdown of the avatar franchise i remember when avatar came out and not the last airbender the james cameron the blue hair sex one the blue furry hair sex and the post yeah the blue furry hair sex with the with the depression post pandora um that depression um the depression yeah so you know uh delayed eight times in in
Starting point is 03:11:29 nine years i think is is the the deal but uh you know you're when you're cameron you can do what you want you have infinite budget right so and and as it was announced uh and continued to like just be this infinite project uh the next update was like by the way there's also avatar three four and five all confirmed as well and it was just like man james like the the first avatar was fine it was a cool movie did a lot of cool things it looked really nice it did some cool things it did some cool things with the 3d by making it about the depth of the scenes and not sticking something out in your in front of you like hey they had a old guy that was really cool and it was it was you know and the moment even after enjoying that the moment you announced
Starting point is 03:12:26 five of any product i just roll my fucking eyes like the audacity so the audacity that comes with like we are instantly announcing the entire franchise you know like it like fuck you who do you think you are mr terminator two that's who you are like the like so they and and we've been waiting the man made terminator two then he made aliens then he made fucking titanic the then so he walks into a room you know what the fucking pitch for aliens was fox didn't want to fucking make it and fucking cameron walks in after having done i think he did whatever he did a bunch of fucking good shit and he walks up to a fucking whiteboard and writes the word alien on the whiteboard and then looks at the fucking wigs
Starting point is 03:13:27 and then he turns back to it and writes an s next to it and they greenlit them yeah yeah yeah now that being said it's like you know if someone were to walk in and and fucking write that down and you're like who the fuck do you think you're ridley scott and it's like no oh i think i think it had a dollar sign in it i think that's what you think that's what it was a dollar sign yeah i think so he turns back adds the s turns back and then puts a line through it yeah oh god james you're talented but fuck off man like so that's it like anytime a franchise announces its entire fucking multiverse at once you kind of root for it to fail immediately
Starting point is 03:14:22 oh yeah the the the the dark monsters pictures universe oh man the fucking that thing was like so cursed um um right off the bat uh what was the one with the with the million dollar prize the game with the footsteps and the and the tommy tallorico um infinite undis no not infinite undiscovery no that's that's very advent rising advent of the game right advent rising human to human never all right announcing the fucking like the whole like oh god even when like the hobbit turned out to be this four movie multi epic whatever fucking shit and you're like dude just no you just do we have to do the full lord of the rings again and like nobody gives a shit after like it's just the most it's the hubris man everyone
Starting point is 03:15:29 roots for it to fail everyone does it's it's really funny because the only company that i can ever remember saying that this is going to be a trilogy right away and people going yeah was mass effect when they said the mass effect was going to be the first part of a three game series and and like bio bio where was so fucking shit hot when they did that like absolute fucking pinnacle of their fucking industry and also then mass effect one came out and it was fucking awesome so like okay but like then they added rising i i can't even remember who the fuck made that and silicon knights did not have the fucking pedigree that fucking bioware did and silica knights had been working on two human since before the playstation one came out
Starting point is 03:16:26 um yeah and and again but like again even when you're talking about stuff that is successful like like you know lord of the rings movies were good and then you're like oh the hobbit yeah that's cool but just the like the exhausting like the it's you know what it is it's because it is a corporate ass like we're gonna work we're in it for this much money and we're taking this from you it's like it's like a fucking like uh pointing at the wrestlemania sign claiming that we're gonna own hollywood for the next 10 years and you see this avatar thing and it's like of course this is peter jackson's vision the fact that the five sequels were announced um while the second one was in the middle of being delayed is is entirely his beast you know but um but yeah they we finally
Starting point is 03:17:15 have the names of what these are all gonna be so avatar two is the way of water and then three is the seed bearer uh which comes out two years later so 2022 and then 2024 and then 2028 is the tulkin rider and then avatar five is the quest for awa which is 2028 and we all know how awesome it is when a franchise decides to annualize its movies and give you more fucking star wars than you ever wanted um so we'll see man um this the the article describes each of these as a standalone story that will come to its own conclusion and it's like oh wait so these are like separate that don't connect to each other but then it says no they do connect to each other so that's like wait so then what does that mean and it's just like oh you just don't they're basically just saying like oh they're
Starting point is 03:18:14 not gonna make it so that you have to see the others in order to see one of them but it is gonna connect don't you know overall anyway and it's it's ever since i went through the whole mass effect trilogy recently and i had followed that series very very carefully when it was happening like i feel like you could do a university course on the mass effect trilogy because it is this perfect cipher for such a huge huge huge amount of entertainment because i remember that you remember the interviewer in which someone actually said out loud mass effect three is the best place to start the mass effect yeah which is which is what i'm hearing from you this is what hey do you not like what avatar two looks like don't worry you can jump
Starting point is 03:19:06 into avatar four won't have missed a thing which is essentially calming down a bunch of like worried execs that are like but hold on if you say that part five is coming out what if about all the people that didn't bother watching the other ones like you know and and um anyway it's just and hey if you want if you want the the the the fucking bonus version of what i'm talking about go look up what the original logo for the witcher three wild hunt was and that it had a big fat three on it exactly changed exactly witcher wild hunt with three slashes down the middle yeah people didn't realize that it was actually the third game yeah four is around the time that the french and that the french has gets embarrassed by its number and then five is the time that you
Starting point is 03:19:55 have to start hiding it and creating a subtitle but if you make it to six or seven fucking make that number big bring it bring it back because yeah yeah it's a legacy franchise now um it's by the fantasy started that way they hit the number and then they're like holy shit we made it to seven eight nine ten eleven fucking slap that shit i don't care what the fucking logo looks like yeah it's so weird because again like i liked avatar it was a good movie it was fun and enjoyable it was an absolutely excellent theater going movie and like with this type of announcement i roll my eyes and go like i don't care like i don't care if it takes fuck you man like it's such a fucking uh i do the audacity bugs me the smug you know the absolute fart smelling
Starting point is 03:20:55 of it all is just what was the name of that old guy that looked like cable like the actor um oh oh the action oh the the general uh yeah i forget he jumps in the mech was he's got an actor name he's got he's a human steven lang yeah he carried that movie for me man you they should bring him back and have him have the the the fucking have him have the baster you gotta have the dog that he can give the baster to he has to give the dog the baster and the dog has to chase you with the baster in its mouth that's the move don't forget step two go see don't breathe folks it's very good um and then he will he's coming back for the seed bearer he'll be back for part three that's that's that's where the yeah and it's just glowing blue
Starting point is 03:22:05 inside of it you know a big even lang is the seed bear big blue baster all right um i'm so glad i went to the trouble to check that that was steven lang anyway maybe you know um maybe it'll set the world on fire again and create more post pandora depression and um maybe they'll all be amazing but i you know maybe this is insensitive or cruel of me but i'm gonna say it when i saw that people were going to avatar and then going home and being depressed that pandora wasn't real i was like good good being depressed you you fucking idiot like like to me the kind of franchise that could get away with this type of announcement but didn't is like dune dune was really good oh yeah yeah because it's big it's sorry and you're
Starting point is 03:23:14 and if you were to hear about what their plans were i would be totally on board for that given the scope of everything but they went yeah no well you know we'll see pretty well you'll get another one you know but we'll see totally reasonable wow that was weird i'm like fucking yeah that's that's who can do it you know anyway whatever all right avatar five who cares i mean i'm sure like the delay i mean like hammering is one of those people too that was like vehement about the um the theater going experience so um like the idea of of not that it was related but the idea of a pandemic release of this thing that was like hedging eight years worth of fucking you know uh uh bets on to release in a time frame when like it would have been terrible for movie
Starting point is 03:24:05 goers um yeah is uh there's it's almost no question it's like yeah they're gonna push that shit back anyways what's another year after seven or six people will watch it it's my movie it says james Cameron on it and it's all the cg the actors we don't need actors and then cares and then go play fling blocks or whatever the fuck it was called you're thinking of boom blocks and that was spielberg oh it wasn't him oh shit okay all right yeah okay all right let's take some letters hey if you want to send in a letter go to send it to the internet and uh type in uh castlesuperbeastmail with gmail.com that's castlesuperbeastmail gmail.com you see that adult makoto fan art oh no i did not oh man should i just go to your
Starting point is 03:24:55 twitter is that the fastest way to do this i mean i've already retweeted it but i'll just retweeted again yeah that it's on top there you go it's on top is that wow that was fast middle-aged makoto still angry but on the inside i mean i can't really tell that she's middle-aged from that art so i'll just take your word for it um that's to make that the protagonist of street fighter anyway uh let's take some letters castlesuperbeastmail at gmail.com that's castlesuperbeastmail at gmail.com oh yeah blanka looks good in a suit that's it does he yeah blanka looks great in a suit that's like hulk suit thing or yeah yeah hulk suit man has hulk suit man has been added to
Starting point is 03:25:55 fortnite says the children um yeah better fucking costume than um most of the other official ones barring of course the actual plushie because it's the greatest costume in street fighter history it's it's really good yeah i i would not mind that getting reincorporated from like i don't know if like the fortnite pushed for a more creative angle there but like by the fact that who knows it's a thing that capcom didn't integrate at any point officially is like okay well now you should because clearly they can see how much of a banger if i can costume that is hey willy when the fuck are you gonna nut up and join me for doubles fortnite with your uh-huh characters uh-huh yeah just because blanka drops in that
Starting point is 03:26:40 means i have to play it now right just because rew drops in that means i have to play it now right towered bitch just because ripley drops in that means i have to play it now right it's because naruto drops in that means i have to play it now right oh you missed out on naruto naruto's gone oh is he gone they took them out yeah man damn gone well we got the memes unless you get the later version of naruto didn't they they got the video don't you play teppen because it's got capcom characters in it yeah and i like teppen it's fun it's getting annoying come on it's hopping to doubles i'll put you in a truck you shoot the gun can i still go to the mlk museum with um rick and morty
Starting point is 03:27:30 if you make it yourself yes okay in creative uh we got one coming in from um that's an open invitation that people can bug you about crash fortnite if i was gonna fortnite i would have fortnite it it's not to say that i won't ever fortnite but if i was gonna i would have what i mean if what does that mean if i was gonna do it by now i already would have um crash says hello woolly stares at and pat versus some time ago i was reading pat's twitter thread about immersive sims and someone pointed out that fallout new vegas was an immersive sim
Starting point is 03:28:30 but three wasn't solely because new vegas had more options uh this led me to realize that this higher complexity subgenre specification is not unique hack and slash to character actions and shoot them ups to bullet hells are also subgenres based solely on complexity while you could argue that these might just be elitist gatekeeping terms to separate genres uh games of casual and hardcore um we're here to have some fun so my question is is can you come up with high complexity subgenres for other popular games uh genres by using the same naming conventions and not reusing words from the root to make it sound cooler uh for example i suggest we call uh high complexity puzzle game a brain master game with love okay from crash well so i'm gonna ignore
Starting point is 03:29:20 part of the question and i just want to point out i want to i want to take a a character that we know the official dr spaghetti one giany matrigano grano um who has been uh widely shunned widely shunned for his statement that fortnite is an immersive sim uh change my mind yeah okay yeah you can uh you can die on those hells if you want that being said uh yeah no fun fun genre naming conventions video games has the best by far because video game genres are terrible and incredibly poorly descriptive for anyone you coming in especially is tells you nothing i mean jesus i'm gonna be playing zone of the enders two high speed robot action came to mind yeah and it's the and it's the only game that fucking fits that criteria it's the only one but it
Starting point is 03:30:23 also requires an understanding or at least familiarity with the concept introduced by tactical espionage action yeah exactly exactly um now rogue likes and metroid vanias certainly are just like using another title to say it's similar to that um but when you have to use descriptive adjectives um that's more fun you know um like i could call das x a cyber stealth choicer if you want a choicer um it's not the first time where like jokes have been made about like martial arts simulators right a fighting game can easily become a reactive martial arts simulator if it's if it's uh if it fits the right criteria but um i don't know i would i would say um um res is a musical rail shooter yeah right you can you can use you can do that but but then you
Starting point is 03:31:28 get into the video game specific problem of res is a musical rail shooter however it is unique in and of itself enough that people will instead call games similar to res res likes um but i would also but no i can i can apply the same i can apply musical rail shooter to um cyanara wild hearts as well you know yeah um um i have to say um in my opinion for video game genres it's it's they're terrible so you might as well have fun with them the only rule the only rule that i personally have is that if i start to describe a game's genre and i sound like the steam page with the tags there needs to be a new genre created for this thing and i don't care how poorly descriptive it is because i'm gonna pick some random game that's on steam sale right now
Starting point is 03:32:26 um uh i'll take rogue legacy right oh it's a rogue like metroidvania india action rpg barf barf like that's terrible i hate that i could call curbie a passive progression platformer um but i would rather just call it a suck-em-up yeah why not you know and and after enough time everybody goes oh yeah that's a suck-em-up yeah i know you know classic suck-em-up staple ah um teppen is not if i if i wanted to call if i wanted to describe uh rogue legacy too is its own custom genre i'd call it a randomized genealogy destruction machine okay okay teppen is different so it's more it's like an active phase dueling card game
Starting point is 03:33:26 yeah you gotta you gotta include that um okay here i guess the final boss of this is you know get a better word than souls like complex complex fantasy immersive complex fantasy oh i saw somebody call earlier in the chat they called dark souls walk-and-block walk-and-block okay action what do you remember stop-and-pop third-person shooters okay okay but uh you know bloodborne and and uh second corpse runner corpse runner corpse runner could work that's the general gist of what's happening there's also stat management and numbers and
Starting point is 03:34:21 and um light narrative but corpse runner is is fun i got one field like field like yeah why feel actually all just kingsfield games okay well it's a third person field like if we if we if we avoid if we avoid the self the the the title descriptions and the self-referencing i'm going with corpse runner suck them up all right i think of loot games yeah well you know give a time and it'll it'll you know people will figure it out like like um uh uh hack and slash or or uh i really i really want to give a thumbs up to Hideo Kojima and uh Hideki Kamiya for innovating in the art of completely useless garbage genres
Starting point is 03:35:24 that allows us to now just make them up willy nilly tactical espionage action is a terrible descriptor of any video game and so is stylish heart action despite the yep despite the fact that there aren't clones i'm going to say that like catamari is a genre yeah it's the genre of katamari mm-hmm because even monkey ball which might be the closest thing is not close katamari domishi is the closest any game has ever become to the cowboy bebop description of itself it will become its own genre and the genre will be known as name will be katamari domishi yeah there you go um good question that's a good question uh adam says dear dragon dragon punch and crouching neutral
Starting point is 03:36:26 uh about two months ago i do you want to be which one do you want to be on that i'm crouching neutral baby oh yeah you're right i'm holding down back i'm gonna just draw super on wake up and maybe it'll work if i do it twice um no pacman uh catamari is a pacman like you in pacman you don't get too big to move through the the corridors yeah no that's not come on terrible um about two months ago i beat code vain for the express purpose of deleting it from my library and downloading something else then i know that feeling i downloaded cyberpunk 2077 beat it last week to make room for rdr2 a game which my fiance is currently playing to finish a different game beating games to get rid of them i feel like triple a games have the same problem
Starting point is 03:37:15 stellar first mission okay middle and an end game that feels like a chore is this a problem with a specific type of video game or am i just getting too old to play no yeah it's a problem with a specific type of video game specifically the ones that you apparently buy i want to say that uh i mean i talked about it before but like seventh gen brought a lot of like staples in that we are that we have today fourth gen brought in a lot and seventh gen um i i feel like triple a games from that 360 uh uh era it are like a lot of games had a vertical slice that was all about an amazing opening cutscene a first mission that was like higher budget than the rest of the entire game a set piece oh yeah and then after the set piece is done the introduction of a hub world
Starting point is 03:38:14 and the promise of mechanics that'll probably lead nowhere but the promise of them is there and then you just hit filler for 30 hours and then you fucking end on a sputter you know uh that bait and switch style thing was was uh an era so so i'm gonna call that because i i've also recognized that but you you summarized it a lot better than i would have that's bio shock bio shocks first two hours are so incredible and then the game gets worse and worse and worse and then you get to the end it ends on a fucking fart infinite point where most mo no just bio shock really one and like to the point where i would find it to be a not very um it would be a not controversial thing to say that bio shock would have been way better if they just deleted
Starting point is 03:39:18 the entire final level from the game the final level bio shock goes down from the start but i did enjoy the build the like the i did enjoy some of the middle of that um but yeah but but that describes again that describes a whole lot of just forgettable third-person shooters and and um yeah games that just again they they they sell you on the vertical slice being the first 10 minutes you know in fact they'll probably pack like four achievements into those first 10 minutes as well so that if you're a chivo hunter you're going to be super excited about the prospect of getting them all fast and and quickly you know um it's it's not just you um and some of those trends some of those trends are still with gaming today so there's a lot of
Starting point is 03:40:10 games that feel they have to hit a certain hour count because of the value proposition that i brought up earlier because people don't want to buy a $60 game and blow through it in a weekend um but instead of making a game that's so good you want to play that 20 hours over and over many times they'll just go well what if we just put a bunch of levels in here or in red dead two's case what if we just made every single attempt you ever had to have fun a miserable fucking experience so we could tell you every cliched fucking story we ever stole from any western i've ever seen um let's take one last one over here uh from dr dinkis who says uh hey willing pat just thought i'd share with you a cool wholesome story when i was a kid my best
Starting point is 03:40:56 friend's name was max we met in first grade we're thickest thieves throughout most of elementary bonded over video games spent many hours in his parents living room playing mario carton something like that one year uh it was max's birthday and i had nothing to give him felt bad that i'd probably have to give him something i already owned but that's the way it was going to be i had a playstation lying around and a copy of megaman legends and despite me never given the game a real chance i felt like i was going to be a weak gift so uh it was all i had and uh he took it without making a big deal of it of course and that was that fast forward 20 years drifted apart as young friends but he got into a good college out of state didn't speak for
Starting point is 03:41:37 probably about 15 out of the blue he hit me up and said he was in town with his partner wanted to hang out meet him in his dad's place and the way he introduced me was this is the guy who showed me megaman legends her eyes lit up and they both talked to me at length about the aspects of the game that they admired and how it influenced them come to find out that he makes games now for a living and megaman legends is one of his favorites uh even more wholesome still when we were kids we used to make little computer programs in basic on an 80s laptop that his dad never got rid of and max admitted that he's something of a data hoarder and that somewhere in that 10 terabyte server tower he keeps us in his closet are the programs we've made when we were seven or eight
Starting point is 03:42:18 years old well that's adorable dog bless thanks for reading that's a that's that's that's that's very cool that's fucking cool yeah no that's a fun thing you know when uh when someone can be like introduced via like their impact in the lore um hey i remember i uh he didn't know it at the time but uh i have a friend uh my my my boy king kingsley who was super cool i remember kingsley and he was unknowingly my fighting game teacher you know without like having any like i had the the era of like growing up with all my cousins and playing street fighters as a kid and stuff but then way after that in my teenage years you know like i started hanging out with him and like he would be the one that like had the PlayStation with all the street fighter copies like
Starting point is 03:43:16 he'd we'd go to the arcade you know like i got into playing them and he was fucking good at them and like learning to beat him was like the first wall that was like oh shit i gotta really fucking work on everything you know and so yeah we like you know what are separate ways and stuff and then eventually like uh uh we he worked we worked at the same place and met up again later and you know when i introduced him to like a bunch of you guys you know it was like oh yeah this is my fighting game teacher you know and he was just like back then i don't know he's back then it was just like whatever here's some fuck he's like you were just some scrub and i was just like let me just fucking bop this kid you know uh but like that's that that was uh yeah that was like formative
Starting point is 03:43:59 and he didn't even know it that's just cool i like that and then you beat him and you were like yeah yeah you started to cry and piss yourself he was like oh okay i mean he came over he hung out we had a big old thing a meet up and then it was like oh shit can can i defeat the sensei and then i got my game in and it was like oh shit i actually did it and he's like all right sure buddy now die go yeah that timing was not that far apart actually now that i think of it and tomorrow the world um good story that was fun that is nice all right that'll do it you
