Starting point is 00:00:00 ["Fighting Band Royal"] ["Fighting Band Royal"] Yo-yo. Good afternoon, Willie. How are you today? Not too bad. How are you? I'm okay. You wearing like a... like a running jacket? Yeah, well, uh, no, it's just, it's my fuckin' little...
Starting point is 00:00:49 like, whatever, walking thing. Um, I did my walk just now. I turned off all the heat in my house last night. I was like, it's too warm. And I turned off all the heat in the house. Mm-hmm. And then I woke up this morning, and was like,
Starting point is 00:01:11 I shouldn't have turned off all the heat in the house. It's not there yet. You still need some. But, uh, it is, um, above zero here. So, um, or, you know, approaching comfortable for the Fahrenheiters. I, uh, slept real well, though.
Starting point is 00:01:36 I slept real good. Um, so, yeah, I did not have a particularly eventful week in media consumption. Mm-hmm. Um, just, like, some footnotes, really. Um, and, uh, there's definitely... Heat touching? Uh, a whole lot of...
Starting point is 00:01:57 A whole lot of, uh, gaming announcements going on. So... Uh-huh. Uh, let's not dally. Bad news for you. I played, like, a dozen demos off the Steam next festival. Oh, yeah? Okay. Okay.
Starting point is 00:02:13 All right, so you can... So there you go. You can... I cut that down. You can report it on that, because, yeah, Nintendo Direct itself has a billion things. It sure does. Yeah, well...
Starting point is 00:02:23 Okay, in terms of just, uh, again, my week of media consumption. Real simple. Um, finally got to sit and watch Puss in Boots The Last Wish. Oh, my God, it's so good! Fuck, it's good. It's so good. Like, I knew it was gonna be good going in
Starting point is 00:02:41 based on the bits that I'd seen. But, wow! What a fun movie, man. Damn. Just, um, always a pleasant surprise when, like, you know, as fun as little drops can be with things like Hi-Fi Rush out of nowhere. Oh, right.
Starting point is 00:03:01 You know, and, I mean, we'll be talking with, like, Metroid Prime as well. Um, it's equally as fun when something that's in the middle of a franchise that you shouldn't give a fuck about, really, you know, or play too much close attention to, and then you just get, like, quality out of nowhere. Cause I remember, you know,
Starting point is 00:03:21 when we were talking about this last time a bit, and it was like, right, there was a Puss in Boots 1, and it was like, oh, yeah, that did get a spin-off, I'm sure. I did not hear anything about the Puss in Boots 1 ever. Not a single goddamn thing. No, you know, like, you got your fucking celebrity cast, you know, it's a type 3D movie going on and all that. But then, when I went to go just go look up that,
Starting point is 00:03:43 and I was like, right, what other things were there? And it's like, there was a Puss in Boots 2 as well. So I thought this was 2. There was a, what a p- Not? There was a, what looks to be like a straight-to-DVD style, like, 3 musketeers, like, 3 baby kittens, kind of thing.
Starting point is 00:04:01 So, it's even more like, just, you really, this could have just been a name on a list of nothing. Um, it was a show? Okay, yeah. I didn't, I saw the poster for the first movie, I saw this other poster and it was like the 3 little kittens that were 3 musketeers and it's like, ah, the Puss in Boots trio, you know?
Starting point is 00:04:23 And I was like, some other spinoff thing. Netflix show? Okay, yeah. So then you go there and you're just like, it's them, it's, there's no reason that a random Shrek spinoff should be quality, but it is. And when it gets to the action scenes in particular, it's, instead of being spider-verse the whole way through,
Starting point is 00:04:41 it turns on the spider-verse. Like, we're gonna have something coo- we're gonna have an establishing shot of the, of the action looking a little, little low frame rate. And then, then you're gonna know to really pay attention to the upcoming low frame rate scene. Yeah. And you see the, uh, just like,
Starting point is 00:05:01 everything starts moving a little bit more dynamically. The thing he's fighting tends to get a little bit more like, again, just exaggerated in its gestures, a lot more key frames appearing, a couple of hits have hit stop with explosive color on them. You know? And then just the simplicity of things. Like, um, God, the fucking wolf, man.
Starting point is 00:05:24 That fight scene, you know, just so strong. And just a very simple and, and like not over-designed, you know, just a wolf in a fucking gown, got the sickles and... Well, he's got a poncho. I thought it was a poncho. Yeah, yeah. Just a simple, simple drab thing, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:43 the shape itself, you know, just pick it up, you know, like so fucking good, man. Um... Who cares about that shit? It's all about Big Jack Horner. The most evil villain ever exists. I mean, there's no, there's no way you can take the line, what a good boy am I,
Starting point is 00:06:03 and have someone remotely sane say that to themselves. Like, you're, you're, you're doomed from the jump on that. Um, yeah, horrible fucking, just, man. I was waiting for the reveal that it was going to be a Vincent adult, adult man, like five men in a coat type thing. No, he gets even bigger. And he just, he's just that big fucking weirdo, and he's awful, yeah, Big Jack Horner.
Starting point is 00:06:28 It's just, it's been a long time since I've seen a character that's like, would you really shoot a puppy? Yeah, in the face, why are you asking? Like, just so, so evil. And just in case you didn't get it, like, let's run a whole long bit with Jiminy Cricket. Just to really... Played by fucking Jimmy Stewart for some reason.
Starting point is 00:06:52 Played by Dana Carvey doing his fucking Jimmy Stewart impression. Uh, uh, you know, or like doing his, like, like, it's really, it sounds specifically like that, you know. I don't, I don't understand. Like, I don't understand the point of making Jiminy Cricket sound like Jimmy Stewart. Jimmy Stewart died like 80 years ago. Like, but it's fine.
Starting point is 00:07:21 Wow, we're going to, we're going to turn this thing around. We got it. Just, it specifically has that energy for anyone that remembers Dana Carvey. And if you don't, it's just a funny voice that the characters do it, you know. Um, but yeah, no, murder. Just murder all around.
Starting point is 00:07:40 Just kill everyone. And, uh, it was, it was, uh, yeah, that was fine too. Um, to, like, and a couple of, like, a couple of, ooh, shit, little twists with, uh, the backstory, you know. The, uh, the, the, the history of, of, of, of Puss in Boots and, and this is past. Um, but anyway, really and truly though, like, I just appreciate the, like, the nature of a, a little otherwise should be forgettable
Starting point is 00:08:14 spin-off, having quality action scenes, pretty funny jokes, pretty solid, like simple, uh, uh, uh, through line and, um, an ex, a car to an exploration of the nature of mortality coming to terms with one's own end as a, like, major theme explored is really, really solid too. You know? Well, kids, you're going to die one day. No, not me.
Starting point is 00:08:44 Yes, you. Yes, you will die. We're all going to die. Yeah. Walk out of the theater with your kids and, and just like, are we going to, yes, you have to have the talk now. Everyone is going to. And then what?
Starting point is 00:08:59 Right. Let me ask you, now that you actually watched the movie, did you watch the movie with subtitles? No, I didn't. Um. So you didn't, you didn't encounter the, the, the frustrating issue that I was having. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Uh, I, I didn't catch that. I just, I watched it, um, default on, uh, the, whatever, Apple TV. You sicko. Um, subtitles. That being said, I felt like contextually it was fine. Most of the, uh, pero and perotito scenes and whatever were perito.
Starting point is 00:09:33 Excuse me. Like, I felt like contextually you, you could grab what, what they were going for. I did not contextually grab that. I thought he was calling him his own name. And then when they're like, I don't have a name. I'm like, you were just calling him a name. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:52 Well, that's, that's also kind of the bit though. You know, the bit is that like. They're just like, Oh, little dog. And then they're just like, Oh, well, that's, that's become your name amicably anyway. But, um, yeah, it was good. It was good. And, and that dog was fucking solid.
Starting point is 00:10:10 Just. Yeah. I used to have that dog basically. Yeah. Just some tiny fucking piece of shit. Hopelessly dumb, hopelessly innocent. Good stuff. Good stuff.
Starting point is 00:10:23 Um, so yeah. No, I just, just come in just underlining how fucking quality that goddamn movie is. And, uh, Oh, it's fucking fantastic. Yeah. Yeah. And then, you know, also just like little moments where I'm like,
Starting point is 00:10:37 Oh yeah. This is where the action, this is where the, um, the, the big, uh, set piece video game moment happens where you have a colossus battle or you're jumping through floating, um, obstacles in the sky that are affected by loose gravity and things like that. And you're just kind of seeing how that is like, right, right. Plays out the same way. Um, rad shit, highly recommend.
Starting point is 00:11:04 Go, go check that out. Um, way better than it deserves to be. And, uh, I would like to know as well, like maybe there'll be a thing where like you kind of find out, you're just like, for now, you're like, wow, that was really good. And then down the line, you were like, Oh, there was a person thing or team or, you know, there was some sort of. Direct attribution where you're like, right, okay.
Starting point is 00:11:26 This can show up in other series or other places and like this, this type of, uh, uh, uh, you know, quality, especially with the action. Kind of like when you, if you were to see like Gendy stuff before you know that to say the name, Gendy Tartakovsky, you just kind of like, Oh yeah, it's that, uh, Samurai Jack, uh, Dexter stuff. Yeah. Those, those, some of those Dexter fights got pretty cool. Right.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Yeah. So we kind of, we're like, Oh wait, hold on. There's a consistency here. That'd be cool. Somewhere in DreamWorks, just a little fucking super solid team of, of creators. I'm interested to seeing, cause the, the ending of the movie points towards the next one being a Shrek film.
Starting point is 00:12:10 I'm interested to see if these people are going to be doing the next Shrek film. I mean, there was no chance that this was not going to have a sequel anyway, because this is the Shrek spin off franchise. It's the fact that it is a big hit and everybody's popping off at it means that'll just come faster and probably, uh, they'll hopefully get the reins to do their thing with it. You know, but Shrek is also established as Shrek.
Starting point is 00:12:37 So I don't know how much Shrek can become or pushing boots to style can think and become Shrek, but not that I fucking carry their way, but I mean, whatever, you know, like, I feel like I think of the climax of Shrek 2 with holding out for a hero. And I can think you, you could just, you could just do something like that. Just animate it better.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Cause that was like 20 years ago. Mm hmm. Uh, yeah, I don't know. I, I fucking, I have not kept up on my Shrek. I have not. I've been told that that was a mistake. That the Shreks are high quality. Uh, weird.
Starting point is 00:13:16 Cause I remember seeing the first one. Shrek 1. They're Shrek 1. You know, Shrek 1 did its thing. Back in the day. That's John Lithgow. Yeah. I'm just a big fan of like some of you may die and that's a
Starting point is 00:13:30 sacrifice I'm willing to make. Weird amount of John Lithgow talk recently. Yeah. Cause John Lithgow fucking rules. Um, it's fucking great. You ever see him, you see him being fucking evil in, uh, cliffhanger and that shit. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:51 I think I thought the clip was the villain. I believe he's the villain in cliffhanger. Uh, if I remember correctly, and it's super weird cause it's like one of those bits where you could have seen that, uh, way before you knew who he was. And then you go back to it like Robocop and you go, what the fuck red foreman? You know, like it's one of those kind of moments where you're
Starting point is 00:14:15 just like third rock. What fucking ricochet from 91. No. So ricochet is a movie in which John Lithgow is the villain and he plays some fucking dickhead red foreman Robocop style gangster, uh, who gets caught by Denzel Washington as a beat cop and he goes to jail. And when he gets out of jail, like Denzel's being like the,
Starting point is 00:14:42 the fucking DA of the city or the mayor or some shit. And so he enacts this completely absurd elaborate plan to ruin his whole life that involves with like drugging him with heroin and then paying a prostitute to give him the clap. Yeah. Okay. And then so, oh, he's disgraced. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Like the time everyone's, he's just going, no, John Lithgow, he's evil. He's out to get me. Like, oh, you're crazy Denzel Washington. You're crazy. He's not doing nothing. That, that sounds. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:16 Sounds like a nineties Denzel. Absolutely. Why not? Why not that? And a little hit of virtuosity while we're at it. I do not know what that is. Another Denzel vehicle that, uh, I want to say was in either 95.
Starting point is 00:15:35 It was, it was within a couple years or maybe the same summer as Johnny Pneumonic and created. Oh my God. And there was some reality simulation. Personalities of multiple serial killers manages to escape into the real world. And I was like, wait, are we talking about this is not Johnny Pneumonic?
Starting point is 00:15:51 What's going on here? And it's like, no, it's virtuosity. And the trailer cut was him putting the gun at the camera going game over. And that was, that was it. And that stuck with me. Yeah. There you go.
Starting point is 00:16:05 Reset the clock on that shit. Um, anyways, can we get a John Lithgow vehicle, please? John. How about that term? John was balding and old when we last remembered him in the, in the early 90s or like late nineties even. John must be really fucking. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:28 I'm sure, I'm sure they can fill him with enough orphan blood to fucking get him onto a stage. Um, that's what they do, you know, he's 77. Okay. Not too bad. That's not too bad. Yeah. He just looks a million, but fair enough.
Starting point is 00:16:51 Well, that's what happens when you lose your fucking hair. Well, yeah. Yeah. Add 10 years right on top. And then it and then it becomes static, I suppose you stop moving. Yeah, kind of. Um, I got old really, really, really, really fast from like
Starting point is 00:17:05 16 to 25, but then I just kind of hang on lock it in. Not quite 40 for the rest of that time. Yeah. Yeah. That's, that's one way to do it. That is one way to do it. There's, there is some, um, it's a, it's a bad way. There's some, there's some, it is tech though.
Starting point is 00:17:22 You, no one can say that it's not tech. I would qualify. I would qualify it as tech, you know, because shit. Because as time goes on, people like, Oh wow. Like you look exactly, you haven't changed. Yeah. And that's a form of tech, you know, absolutely. Like some people, like it's a roller coaster drop off, you
Starting point is 00:17:44 know, and this is one way of doing it. Um, you know, I had, you know, hey, mom, if you're listening to this, to this podcast, stop listening. Um, but I had the insanely weird situation during COVID. Where I had not seen my parents for a while, but then we hung out, uh, right before we came out to BC. We just talk on the phone and I was, I was hanging out with my mom and I'm back in my head.
Starting point is 00:18:10 I'm like, when did you just turn in the grandma? Uh, like, uh, I really hope, I really hope she stopped listening. You just turned right in the grandma looks just like her. It's so weird. It's weird. Huh. I feel like, uh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:32 No. Uh, I had that's, that's that. Yeah. I really, that's, if you, anyway, you'll go. It goes gradual, gradual, gradual. Right. Yeah. You don't see him for a while.
Starting point is 00:18:43 Yeah. You'll get, you'll get a phone call about that if, if she did choose to, to continue listening. Um, no, I remember when I, um, uh, visited my mom once and I saw, um, she just got like a rogue streak in the front out of nowhere. Yeah. And I was like, oh, hey, look at that.
Starting point is 00:19:03 You know, and she's like, yeah. You know, and she's like all, and I'm like, no, it's kind of cool. You know, it's, it's a thing. It's, it's, you know, she's like, yeah. And then she's not, she's like redone her, her styles of hair to like find ways to hide it and stuff, you know, but I'm just like, just let it rock, man.
Starting point is 00:19:20 Like it's, it's, it's pretty dope. And, and, uh, I've personally can't wait for a fucking silver dreads. I've got to love that shit. I'm, I'm very luckily graying professor style, like streaks in the beard and the temples. So thank God at least I got that. I think, you know, I'm trying to think of like appearance
Starting point is 00:19:40 changes. I think the most upsetting thing I ever saw in anyone's appearance that ever changed was maybe five, 10 years ago, my dad just said, fuck it and shaved his mustache for the first time in his entire life. And I was like, uh, uh, no, no. Yeah. You go back to that.
Starting point is 00:20:02 Put it, put it back. You go back to that baby baby moment where like the baby sees the shave for the first time and dad's face has become something else. And who the fuck are you? And I hate it. I recognize some of it, but I hate it so much. I still hate it.
Starting point is 00:20:19 I still very much hate it. I think it's because I think it's because his mustache had been going from, you know, red, brown, black to gray, to more gray, to gray and white, to more gray and white. And if he was walking around with his mustache right now, it would be like all white, straight, like a little way across like a Jack Layton thing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:44 Nah, man. Let it, let it rock. Like I got the, I got the two, two, uh, uh, grays coming in on the beard first and foremost, like up top. Are they on the sides? Yeah. The lighting here doesn't show it off as much, but like basically the strands down in front are going down like
Starting point is 00:21:01 that. The rest is mostly black up top, mostly couple every now and then, not much, but like I have quite a few going in right here. And it looks pretty dope. I like it. I got my haircut recently and only discovered the bald part up at the top is like stronger on one side.
Starting point is 00:21:19 It's, it's moving. It's, it's not like a pure stanza. It's like on my left side. I got to keep like a full inch further down. Yeah. Right side. Yeah. No, I, oh, come on.
Starting point is 00:21:32 That's not fair. I updated my Twitter profile pic to show them off because I thought it was, I thought they looked cool. You can see, you can see the, the texture change. Salt and pepper. Oh, that's why you updated. Okay. I was wondering about that.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Yeah. Cause I like, I like my beard. It's looking all fucking old and shit. Looks cool. Cool. Um, Aside from, aside from getting old and pushing boots, what else do you
Starting point is 00:21:58 got? Uh, so yeah, no, I guess just to, to wrap up a little bit, had a fun week going through some stuff. Did the stream with Keats. Did the, the rumble bur, the rumble verse farewell. Had a good time. Had a good time. We did trios and, uh, was there any like deep hidden rumble verse
Starting point is 00:22:18 information that was unearthed as a source of this? I mean, we talked about, we like, we learned, I learned some, some strats a little too, a little too late, but I learned some fun stuff. You know. Uh, yeah, I think so basically there was a moment where I was like, okay, so let's talk about all the crazy cool shit that never got to happen.
Starting point is 00:22:36 Right. Let's like, I was like, look, what do we, what do we, what, what's some of the wildest shit that, you know, hasn't been implemented. And it was in the pipe. Yeah. And dude was just straight up like, he's like, well, um, currently we're still trying to find a way for you guys to see
Starting point is 00:22:57 that stuff in some way, shape or form. So maybe the less set about it, the better. You know, and I was like, oh, shit. I was like, yeah. I was like, okay. So there's an implication was made that like, you know, um, there might be some efforts being put towards, uh, some sort of salvage of the situation and possibly a future where the game can exist.
Starting point is 00:23:24 You know, um, it's just that's straight up what he said. And I was like, okay, that's exciting. I like the idea that, you know, there might be a path forward. Um, because yeah, there definitely were like ideas and stuff. Although one of the things that like was more concrete in that line was like, um, uh, they wanted to implement a Frankensteiner. That was like a, like a jumping dive flip into the animation and the full flip over.
Starting point is 00:23:50 But like when it was implemented, it was initially like one of the, it was the best move in the game instantly because it was just like a lunging grab that like was airborne and could clear fences. And like there were situations where you could jump over a fence, land on someone and flip them back over where you were, you know. Well, now's the time to implement it in its completely busted state. Yeah. Um, I mean, anyways, some sort of like community edition would be a fun
Starting point is 00:24:21 thing, but like finding somewhere else or some other way for it to continue to exist would be fucking phenomenal. Um, that'd be a lot of fun for sure. Uh, and, um, you know, and then I was like, Oh yeah. Like, you know, how would you feel about like, like, like, or just, I was just kind of like, like, would you guys ever, would you have considered like tie-ins if like you could work with like an AEW or WWU and stuff?
Starting point is 00:24:44 And they're like, yeah, of course. Like, you know, like that opportunity didn't present itself, but like for sure they would have, you know, implemented like licensed stuff if they could have to do crossover with like a wrestling brand and that, that would work too. Um, and then, you know, I asked if there was a story behind the aesthetics. Oh, fucking God.
Starting point is 00:25:04 Thank you. And I was like, I was like, yeah, you know, is there anything you asked it in your way? Yes. Not in my way. Yes, I did. And I was curious, you know, uh, to hear if there, if there was any to the, the, the way it was planned and how it came out and so
Starting point is 00:25:21 on. And yeah, it turns out, of course, there was. And the, and the idea is that, um, it's, it's actually interesting in that it's similar to, we were discussing how, you know, when you're playing FPS's and you can spot people from far away and like fights can take place at that distance and such. So in a game like this, where you have that plus verticality, where you're going to spot someone not only, uh, on your level, uh,
Starting point is 00:25:47 you know, 100 yards that way or whatever, you're going to be on the top of a skyscraper looking at someone else on a roof over there. So basically they, what they wanted to do was, um, have a visual language that was legible, right? That's the words that you, you, you apply to these types of things. So it's basically, you know, and, and this is something that you see with like extra exaggerated cartooning, but it's like we,
Starting point is 00:26:11 geometric shapes fighting each other that you, you can't possibly mistake what one shape is for another from a distance, especially, right? Like that rectangle is fighting that upside down triangle and that sphere is about to come crash into them, you know? And so the profiles of the characters just from every angle and basically from wherever you're seeing them need to be unconfusable, recognizable shapes.
Starting point is 00:26:41 And that's, that's kind of what became the underlying thing. I'm starting to think, I'm thinking about that and they've run into a problem with that. So like, you know how, like Overwatch talks a lot about, uh, or at least they used to about silhouettes from a distance. Like Reinhardt has to have the really, not just Overwatch, like character designers stuff, but I'll use Overwatch because this is what popped in my head first and like, no matter what
Starting point is 00:27:07 like skin you throw on Reinhardt, he still has to maintain his basic shape, right? Uh, and then they added more and more and more skins and that became a mess. Uh, with Romaverse, like they were doing the skin stuff right away and it's like some of those were like fairly obscuring. Like the full body chicken man outfit. Like did a pretty decent job obscuring that original silhouette,
Starting point is 00:27:33 but I don't know how they would be able to solve that by like, cause Team Fortress, for example, right? It gets to sidestep that problem because the soldier is the soldier is the soldier. The only difference is whether or not they're red or blue. But no, it does mean, one thing that I did notice a lot and uh, I mean, you know, to my, again, to the, to the detriment in some cases was that you couldn't really make the shape go
Starting point is 00:27:59 away more than the outfit. Because if you put that chicken suit on and you use the short orb guy, you would be an orb with a chicken head, right? If you put it on the big girl that I was using, you would be a buff triangle or should I say like, you know, rectangular prism with a chicken head. And then the like small sized person was like the small girl, which was like kind of like, you know, a more human in proportion
Starting point is 00:28:27 as opposed to the really thin pole, right? So you would see like the body adhere to the shape of the character really aggressively more than the helmet or like other little trimmings would in a way. And uh, and like now that I hear the explanation, it's like, okay, I see how that applies and I see what, what you're going for. Um, it just unfortunately, I felt like it makes a sacrifice
Starting point is 00:28:56 as to like, do you feel cool when you're using that slash? Do you enjoy, you know, how you feel from a, from your point of view? You know, it's a, it's a very like, and I think about exaggerated characters and in stuff that I, that I don't mind at all. Um, I think of Bruce Tim character designs. I think of, you know, Batman and Superman animated series
Starting point is 00:29:20 and how those are fucking triangle ass characters and some of the shapes of the, uh, the villains as well are like incredibly distinct. But, um, but admittedly, if you're going to like poison Ivy and Harley Quinn standing next to each other, like, you know, if it's, if not for the, the things like her hair or rather her, um, her Harley outfit, you would kind of blend together a bit more, you know?
Starting point is 00:29:45 Um, and, but still killer croc is killer croc. Uh, I find that's a, that's a style that I, that exaggerates and also manages to kind of like, you know, um, fucking nail it, I suppose. Um, Penguin as well is like a round orb thing, but yeah, you know, feels, feels, feels cool. It feels like it really, it's really successful. Penguin, Penguin's usually an orb with an inverted triangle on
Starting point is 00:30:09 top for like aggressiveness. Um, but, uh, uh, I always interpreted that as Penguin's design as an orb with a big angry triangle was that he's not physically able to hurt you, but what's in his head is pure evil. Um, but so I've played a lot of games that have this exact like legibility concern. So like when you, when you're playing pub G to, uh, fucking
Starting point is 00:30:36 uh, Fortnite, right? And Fortnite, everybody has their fancy skin, right? Uh, and, uh, your skin can dramatically affect your personal visibility, depending on what you're fucking standing next to. Right. There was a skin that I used for a while, which was a guy that was like horrible freak neon purple with arrows coming off his body, pointing at him going hit me.
Starting point is 00:31:03 That was like the reverse of that. But I'm also thinking about how like in Dead by Daylight where you're playing hide and seek in the dark, certain characters because of their default costume and their skin tone are way, way, way better on some maps. Like there was a, one of the default characters, Claudette is a black woman and her clothe is like kind of tan. But if you unlock her prestige, she gets all blood covered
Starting point is 00:31:32 and you put her in a corner and she just disappears. Like the character model is bordering on invisible. And so what a, what a horrible problem that actually was because then you had different characters where like, they're wearing like a white coat. And you're like, well, everybody can see that fucking guy. So the thing I wanted to make sure to state, because what you're talking about is exactly it.
Starting point is 00:31:56 It's that with these types of like examples I can give, context always matters. And the thing about a video game and a video game character design is that you have to, again, it depends on the game. It's not every game is going to call for you to see the character from a super far distance or in darkness with no lighting, silhouette only, like Dead by Daylight might. Everything I'm describing with the, you know, the animated
Starting point is 00:32:19 series, WB stuff was all, they control how close and how far you are to the camera when you depict these characters. The art is seen exactly the way the artist wants you to see it at every moment. So, you know, they control how that language is communicated visually. Spider-Verse Kingpin is a fantastic example who can fill the frame up in front of Miles when needed or just be that
Starting point is 00:32:44 big mountain that's shuffling on the ground over there when needed. But the player is the one who controls the camera in a video game. Yeah, for an animated film or anything, you don't have to worry about, like you need to worry about visibility and readability, but you don't need to worry about readability in the space of 600 milliseconds.
Starting point is 00:33:05 I think, like, so I think Rumbleverse like failed at its goal because like, your character's body shape doesn't affect anything about them at all, right? The readability of the orb versus the triangle doesn't matter and one of its larger problems is that, like, you were never, like, so when you're fighting, when you're shooting someone in Fortnite, PUBG, Apex, whatever, you can fucking see what they have on their person in many cases, like they
Starting point is 00:33:41 have a gun or what have you. In Rumbleverse, the only time I knew what the guy I was fighting had on him is immediately after he hit me with it. Yeah, so two things, though. I would not say that it failed at its goal because I think its goal was to communicate the shapes fight, the particular shapes.
Starting point is 00:33:59 I think it succeeded in doing that because it is true. From a distance, you can always tell what the shapes are that are fighting and you're not going to get mixed up with the, you know, unless they're similar types of character. But in most cases, you can distinguish from a distance who and what are fighting. It's more that that goal, you know, the detriment was to what most people would find, like, appealing in certain
Starting point is 00:34:23 ways. And I would also say that, like, the recognition of the moves, like, recognizing the type of gun on the person and stuff, in this case the game design was, I guess, just less about you seeing that, right? It's just because it's applying, it's applying battle royale things, like, you know, in the structure of how you win and such.
Starting point is 00:34:46 But the recognition of the weapon that someone might have, for example, is not something that carried over to the way this game design presented itself. So there was something about the way that I said that, which I realized I didn't, like, explicitly state an implicit condition, which is, like, the reason why I say I think it failed in its goal is that its goal was obviously legibility for characters at a distance.
Starting point is 00:35:10 But I feel like the implicit goal of designing your character for legibility is that they are highly readable at a distance, but also not fucking ugly. Yeah. Like, yeah, yeah. No, absolutely. And forced for the trees kind of like, well, yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:35:27 And I don't want to look at it. I would even build on that. And I would say highly legible and memorable. While being distinct, right? Yeah. Good character design carries all those things in a way where, yeah, you'll see the shape, you'll recognize them. And you'll see the colors in a swatch, you know, good old
Starting point is 00:35:47 Street Fighter II, right? The fucking, the best example in video games of just here's eight boxes of colors put together and you're like, oh, yeah, instantly. I know who those are. Yeah. That all needs to be juggled at the same time. And of course, what generally is more important or takes
Starting point is 00:36:13 precedent is of course, like when you, where you, the player are controlling the character, what you're seeing the entire time you're playing, you know? And you want those goals to be simultaneously achieved, not sacrificing, you know, the legibility is highest priority and then other things kind of decrease as a result of it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:38 I think Fortnite's the funniest version of this because they have their default skin, which is like an army man. It's like the most normal fucking thing in the world. And then all readability concerns fucking fly out the window because that's fucking Superman and Goku. Yeah. And you don't need readability concerns because the humans that are playing your video game know what fucking Superman
Starting point is 00:37:05 and Goku look like. For sure. And that's the end of that story. At the same time, the child that is growing up, that is really into Spider-Man is not only into Spider-Man because Spider-Man is everywhere, they're into Spider-Man because Spider-Man is an excellent design that's very memorable and the two primary colors are doing their job in making that character
Starting point is 00:37:30 imprint in the mind, you know? So it's both. The character is iconic therefore because they're memorable and they become more memorable because they keep their iconic and when you're learning about them for the first time growing up, not every superhero blows up with the kids, right, but certain ones do. I think the saddest thing about all this is that like the
Starting point is 00:37:54 longer I played, the more people I ran into that were just the lanky. Naked man. Yep. Naked. Yep. Naked lanky man. And I'm like, why is that happening?
Starting point is 00:38:07 And then I figured that it's impossible to make a character that you think is cool in that game so everyone who's playing it for long enough is just defaulting to a shitpost. There's a shitpost energy to what's going on. Now, again, I landed on the body type that I thought was good, which was the buff girl one because that's whatever that's my taste. And then using that as a basis, I could build off of, you know,
Starting point is 00:38:37 with the different outfits and shit. But barring that, if you're looking for something that is just like, yeah, defaulted to what most people would want in that regard and you can't find anything. The attitude becomes. It was like a regular human. Yeah. And then the attitude kind of becomes like, OK, well, then we're
Starting point is 00:38:54 just shitposting here, right? Which is like, yeah. Or you just go like big naked, big naked fat girl, you know, like what Reggie was doing with his character as well and stuff. We're just like, lol, right? That just becomes the entire energy. So, but anyways, not to just repeat last week's discussion, but that was the answer to that question.
Starting point is 00:39:13 And that was interesting. And it does explain, you know, how we got here. Either way, in defense of Keats and Rumbleverse, that as somebody like me who just plays and critiques things and doesn't make anything, it is definitely really easy to sit here and go, yeah, they should have just made it better. That's really easy. It is exception.
Starting point is 00:39:41 It is incredibly easy to just sit there and do. Yes, 100%. I also feel like it is sorry. I just got a message one second. It's very easy to do that. And so in the chat, just go, it's fun too. You're right. You're right guy.
Starting point is 00:40:02 It is fun. Yeah. It is just fun to do. And I also, I also like just in certain topics, we just beat into the ground, you know. And in this case, it's like for anyone who hasn't touched this game or whatever, it's just become associated because every time we bring it up, it's the only point that gets
Starting point is 00:40:17 discussed. And so just beaten into the heads is that thing when it's like, God, there's so much other fun shit, but you know. So I also, I also hate. I also hate the cyclical nature of how we fucking get into these shit things sometimes. Yeah. I think the problem is that it's a fascinating conversation
Starting point is 00:40:35 because I remember you talking to somebody. Fuck it. I forget who it was. It doesn't matter. Like 15 years ago, where the discussion was about some fucking anime fighter that was like mechanically fucking super in depth and really cool and super awesome. And why aren't people playing this instead of street fighter?
Starting point is 00:41:00 And your response was because people like the characters in street fighter and they think they look cool. And it looks cool in street fighter when you do something with the character that you like. Were we talking about our kind of heart? I mean, it might have been. This is like, this is like back when I was in university. Okay.
Starting point is 00:41:20 And the person just like, yeah, but it's so much more in depth. And you're like, if nobody, if you don't like how it looks, nobody cares. No one's ever going to get to that depth. Yeah. No, it matters a lot, man. It matters a lot. And we've also talked in virtual fighter actually.
Starting point is 00:41:35 Okay. But we've also talked about, we've also talked about how the moment that fucking big band and Beowulf showed up in Skullgirls how that was not just for you, but for many people. Oh, holy shit. Look at these fucking badasses. Let's go. You know, and design in Skullgirls, which was peacock.
Starting point is 00:41:59 And I hated the way she played. So I didn't play Skullgirls. I like, I like much of the art deco aesthetics in Skullgirls. I fucking, especially for like a fighting game that just never does that type of thing. I thought that shit was rad, but it is very like it's hitting a niche and you're, and for a lot of people, you're either in or out on cartoon art deco, you know, but yeah, when you're
Starting point is 00:42:24 going for broad appeal, right? That's, this is, this is where the overwatch school of character design or anything really like modern team shooter type of, you know, thing where you're just like, okay, like let's create a gallery of Pixar characters and then let's start applying one piece style exaggerations to them, you know, to create some distinct mixtures of all of the above. I can, you know what, here's an interesting place.
Starting point is 00:42:57 We can, we can go with this because instead of just going over it again in some of this discussion, I came across the art of Nidhogg 2, right? Now here's the thing. I had never went to see the concept art and like what the goal was, right? I just saw what the game was, right? The concept art and the, and the style that the artist usually
Starting point is 00:43:26 goes for is this kind of crazy, wild, consistent thing that makes sense in its own world, in its own way, right? When you look at some of the portfolio of the artist and like how that style like works in a lot of the pieces they did, I go, oh fuck, I see what you were going for, right? And this, in its own unique place where there are no prior expectations involved, could be a fun thing if you saw this world to be a game that you were like, oh yeah, this is a
Starting point is 00:44:03 unique style, a unique world with these, these goofy characters and eyeballs jutting out of heads and all kinds of wild shit, right? And like when you see it fully lit, it's, it's, it's nice. It actually works and it's a very, it's, it makes sense, you know? But when you look at it as a replacement or the characters from one being the simple old school Atari block men
Starting point is 00:44:28 evolving into this and you think of the fights you were, the stickman fights you were envisioning when you played Nidhogg 1, you hate it because this is the, this is not at all what I wanted from what I liked in Nidhogg 1, nor was it why I envisioned these characters to look like. So it becomes a comparison point that you just can't get over because fuck that, I want what I was thinking of, right? Um, and hold on a second, I just saw something that I need
Starting point is 00:44:55 to address. I just saw somebody like people really overblow the whole Nidhogg 2 thing. No, if anything, people under blow it. If anything Nidhogg 2 is not talked about enough. It's the comparison to what came before and the expectation of that that creates this jarring head. What the fuck happened, right?
Starting point is 00:45:21 Um, when you look, but, but like I had never actually gone and seen the concept art for what it was in itself. And as its own world, as its own game that had no connection, it's cool. It can work. It can be a thing. You know, it would be a fun, uh, uh, uh, yeah. It's almost like, it almost reminds me of kind of like,
Starting point is 00:45:41 you look at like psychonauts and these games with very just distinct, colorful, unique, you know, things going on and like, I could see that existing, but because of what it was originally you get here, you know. Um, and, uh, you know, I was also like, uh, talking to, um, the Yomi Hussle guy, Ivy Sly, about like, yeah, if you ever got like, if a super talented artist ever came along and said, yo, I can do some amazing sprites for this game.
Starting point is 00:46:10 Like, would you be down to like do that? Would you, would you like to see these characters become like, you know, super detailed and all that? The mods in the game have already made it really pretty and people have been doing lots of amazing backgrounds and character designs and shit. But he wisely said, yeah, but I'm also aware of how situations like Nidhogg 2 can happen, you know, and like, you don't want
Starting point is 00:46:31 to just take something that is the cool old new ground stick figure battles that we are looking at and remembering from the flash era, uh, and then replace that with something that people absolutely did not have in mind. And then, you know, and then it just becomes like revulsion, right? The stick figures in and of themselves currently have, you know, character for stick figures.
Starting point is 00:46:52 They've been getting in more and more individual in that regard and like, you want to just be careful about that whenever someone has a expectation of the simple and then you decide to draw and fill in the lines in their brain, you know, um, it is interesting. Nidhogg 2 is the, it's, it is an interesting example to just go back and look and you can see, yeah, go check out like the full renders, not the in-game sprites, you know, and you'll
Starting point is 00:47:16 see what I'm talking about. I feel like Yomi Hussle, like changing its art style, like the stick figure art style has the, has the, the benefit of being able to add like literally anything they ever want to it in the future and have it be consistent. What's awesome though, and this is where you can see, um, the play, the consensus almost amongst everyone playing it and how we see the features and how we see
Starting point is 00:47:45 the aesthetics. If you go to the workshop, which just got up, like so the, the Steam version of the game, they just updated so that you can do community workshop files to download, um, stages, characters and, and customization and stuff. If you go look at the really popular characters and stages that people have added to the game, which supports modding, everyone is on an unwritten rule respecting that it's about
Starting point is 00:48:11 a level of subtlety and like a lot of the backgrounds that are really nice are like, they're not trying to be too jarring with what you're seeing. It's like layers of gradients, layers of, because like it's originally just a black background and they're like, we're going to add a little bit here. We're going to be a bit minimalist. We're going to add some details.
Starting point is 00:48:29 We're going to make like a night sky that's really pretty, but we're not going to have a crazy busy hyperanimated background, right? And the characters are all going to be all the custom characters, which could be anything. People tend to make them adhere to, well, it's a silhouette of a stick figure. And you're going to,
Starting point is 00:48:45 I'm looking at a silhouette of Michael Jackson right now. Exactly. Everyone kind of understands the shared aesthetic that we like is like, keep your characters to silhouettes with distinct features highlighted like a sword or a, you know, whatever robot fucking shape arms and keep your backgrounds to like kind of subtle things as well, because that's currently the visual style that the default game has and
Starting point is 00:49:09 anything you're going to build on it can build in that way, you know? So the community creations almost show you what we all kind of feel more detail could and should look like without going way past the line of like, okay, well, this is not even what I recognize anymore, you know? It's an interesting idea for like this exact topic. You're seeing people implemented themselves by inserting
Starting point is 00:49:35 their own versions of these designs and characters into the game. Anyway, that's pretty much it, you know, with those two things. The Rumbleverse stream will be dropping over on Wally versus soon. Check that out. And yeah, playing more Hi-Fi Rush, loving that.
Starting point is 00:50:01 Mass Effect 3 is continuing. And this Friday as well, I'm going to be doing a sponsored, actually two sponsored streams for Wild Hearts. So that's that new, like, hunting of the monsters style game. It's not a monster hunter. It's that game where monsters get hunted. So did you ever play Tokidin 2?
Starting point is 00:50:30 I didn't, but I watched it being played. Okay, because like, Koei Tecmo has like, like, so fucking Capcom stole the Dynasty Warriors idea and made like, fucking Samurai Warriors or whatever it was. They're saying Goku Pissara, I think it was. And Koei Tecmo responded by going, I'm going to make a monster hunter. And Tokidin 1 was like, kind of okay.
Starting point is 00:50:55 Tokidin 2 was like, it was getting there. It was pretty good. I heard, so I heard. Yeah, yeah. And that grappling stuff was real cool. It wasn't quite as good as the monster hunter at the time, but you saw like a gigantic improvement. That is the game that also got me to really appreciate the
Starting point is 00:51:12 difference between a grappling hook and a zipline. Yeah, it's very different. They're not the same thing. Yeah. So I'm interested in seeing what's going on with Wild Hearts because I'm a little worried that game is kind of being sent out to die because I found out it was coming out next week, last week.
Starting point is 00:51:34 And then when I mentioned that, everyone was like, what? It is. I don't know, but I will be. It all rests on you. It's all on me and my sponsored stream, my plural, because it's going to be a weird one, right? But there will be two streams in the same day. This is so perfect.
Starting point is 00:52:03 I just saw somebody say, Wild Hearts is out next week. No, it's out in like three days. Yeah. Some people started taking a look at it. I believe embargo was up, but I'm scheduled to take a look and stream it on Friday. And so that's what I'm going to do. You said there was going to be two.
Starting point is 00:52:24 Yes. I would have preferred if it was simply one normal stream, but that will not be the case. So instead I'll be doing a stream at 2 p.m. And then I'll be doing another stream at 6 p.m. What's the difference? There will be stream one at 2 p.m. And there will be stream two at 6 p.m.
Starting point is 00:52:49 What's the length of these? About two hours each. Okay. Because I'm like, if you run the first one four hours, then you'll just roll right. We are going to do two hours. We are going to stop. And then we are going to restart and do another two hours.
Starting point is 00:53:11 Oh, this sounds, that sounds fun. That sounds like a super great idea that you were totally 100% on board with. Hey, man. I had the discussion. I had a button and then hit it again. That's, that's fine. I got no issues.
Starting point is 00:53:26 But with that, you know, just. I don't know how the marketing for this game is working out based on what you told me and what I'm sorry you cut out. What'd you say? I said, I don't know what the marketing for this game is about. If what you're telling me and what, what I was doing this sponsored stream, I just run it for like seven hours.
Starting point is 00:53:53 Whatever, whatever the marketing is about, I approve of the marketing decisions that this game is making. I'll tell you one thing. Oh, I bet. I approve. So we'll check it out. I'll play with my Karakura and I'll see if I can't fuck up a monster.
Starting point is 00:54:11 You'll probably fuck up way more than one monster. Yeah. So tune into the, the two streams we'll be doing on Friday and then a video or a few will be popping up very, very shortly afterwards within the realm of the immediate week following. So that's, that's, that's the plan. That's, that's pretty much it.
Starting point is 00:54:34 All right. And that's all going to be over at Wally twitch.tv slash Wally versus. Yes. Exactly. And, and just in terms of house cleaning, yeah, Wally versus the algorithm, the latest Wally versus whatever is out long, long slop.
Starting point is 00:54:54 Go check that out. And we got some other shorts coming your way and gone in 60 seconds as well. Popping over on the main channel. Please, please click and behold and ask no questions. Simply watch. What's going on with you? Okay.
Starting point is 00:55:21 So you know how we're doing page may cry or page may cry HD or whatever you want to call the series. Page beat DMC one a few weeks ago. So we moved on DMC two under the, under the condition that eject at any point. You can just stop at any point. The eject clause. So we did a whole stream of DMC two and the woman walked away
Starting point is 00:55:43 go, ah, it's not that bad. There's stuff in it. So fuck the DMC to play through is finally happening. Her. Yeah, I mean, you know, Paige well enough to know that her tolerance for trash is out of this world. Yeah, there's also the part where like, you know, you're a super fan and you're the opinions have been formed over
Starting point is 00:56:16 the course of decades and you're going back and you're introducing it to someone who's getting into the gameplay of this genre as a new thing. So the comparisons between mustard and Dijon might not be as highly tuned as you might think. There's a lot going on and it really has exemplified the damage that hype can do to your mind. So Paige played and beat DMC one, which ends like shit, right?
Starting point is 00:56:51 And rolls right into DMC two, like four days later, right? What expectations does she have? Kind of none. What expectations did I have when I played DMC two after spending like a year and a half beating DMC one on every difficulty and learning all sorts of cool moves and all that shit. I built up a fucking fake game in my mind, which would then
Starting point is 00:57:18 later be released as DMC three. And then I got DMC two and I was like, what the hell is this? Why is it like this? You built up DMC three in your head? Kind of. That's how it kind of feels. So many more moves. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:37 Okay. All right. Fine. Not in specifics, but in context. And so as we're going through it, she's like, uh-huh, the fucking, the demon tanks are silly. And then I leave the room to take the dog out and I come back and she's using auto fire next to the tank to kill it with the
Starting point is 00:57:58 gun while she's doing like woke up to justice caught us in front of the camera. And I'm like, yeah, no, I'm, I'm stuck here. We're doing the whole thing for sure. That's about right. That's about right. All right. Well, um, I will say adding a turbo button to shooting the
Starting point is 00:58:19 gun in that game, dramatic improvement. Sure. You can do a deep dive on Lucia's kit, uh, then. No. Cause I can't really recall much about it. Um, apparently someone made a, a DMC two definitive edition. I'm sure they did. There's some sort of like fan mod that like is out there that
Starting point is 00:58:46 like, yeah, adjusted gun damage and changed a couple other things. Well, the problem with gun damage is that like half of all enemies in the game are flying like that. That's, that's the like going back to it and like reexamining what's going on. It's like the guns aren't actually that much stronger. They, they're not like, they're actually weaker than DMC ones
Starting point is 00:59:10 guns, like in terms of damage per second, but it is giving you like 30 to 50% of every encounter is enemies flying in the fucking sky. So like you have to shoot them. Yeah. I think, um, at the time prior to Dante's awakening, anyone who played and liked devil may cry one was probably just expecting like a loss levels for devil may cry two.
Starting point is 00:59:37 Just take what we got, drop him in a new location, new couple new bosses, do something and like someone, another boss that was like, uh, Nello Angelo, cause those were fucking sick. Yeah. And that's it. Like. Yeah. So I'm stuck doing that.
Starting point is 00:59:57 Uh, I also went and played like a dozen demos off the steam next, uh, uh, festival, which I don't get the concept of that festival because the demos go away tomorrow. It's stuff that you can wish lists in. You can play it and you can wish list it, but the demos will mostly leave tomorrow. The vast majority of them. And I'm like, I don't know why you do that.
Starting point is 01:00:26 I think, I think it's, it's a, just a kind of like a wish list promotion. Wait, are they gone now? Really? Huh. If so, that's stupid. Regardless, I played a bunch of them. Uh, and then I wrote down a little, I guess they're gone now.
Starting point is 01:00:42 Um, I played a bunch of them and I listed down the ones that are worth talking about because boy, there were a bunch that were not worth talking about. So first of all, Willie, have you heard of dark and darker? No. Okay. So you should probably go and look at dark and darker because what we're seeing with dark and darker is a new breakout hit
Starting point is 01:01:12 like pub G being incorporated into multiple different genres. And that is the Tarkov like, are you familiar with escape from Tarkov? A Tarkov like. Okay. Hold on. I'm pulling this all up. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:01:31 You're going to, you're going to want to, you're going to want to look up escape from Tarkov, T-A-R-K-O-V. So escape from Tarkov is a modern military, um, battle royale game. Sure. Uh, that's all hyper realistic and shoot the gun peak around the corner, et cetera. That's some real looking guns, but it's gimmick is the
Starting point is 01:01:55 extraction mechanic. So basically the idea is that you're not battle royaling to become the number one guy at the end of the, of the map. You're battle royaling until you can get enough stuff and then leave. And then you will bring in your stuff on the next run. And the idea is that you will increasingly empower yourself from run to run.
Starting point is 01:02:18 But if you die, you will have a permadeath situation in which you lose all your shit. Okay. So there's no enclosing ring that is killing everybody. There is an enclosing ring. Oh, okay. And, but it's, it's not about being the last man standing. It's about getting good stuff and leaving.
Starting point is 01:02:35 Okay. So is there like a Titanfall drop ship type situation? Not that I am aware of in Tarkov. I don't know how you extract in dark and darker. You walk out of a goddamn portal. Okay. Uh, people are calling it extraction or extraction game or extraction shooter.
Starting point is 01:02:55 Okay. Um, in dark and darker, that formula has been adapted to a first person, uh, like Kingsfield dungeon crawler. I see. So you're loading in with, uh, honestly, woolly, you know what it fucking looks like? It looks like the game, Mike and the gang play and reboot. The sorcery game.
Starting point is 01:03:19 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like generic ass goblins and skeletons. Lizards warriors and a word from our sponsors. Yeah. Um, and you are loading in with one, two or three players hunt showdown kind of works like this and you are, uh, dungeon
Starting point is 01:03:39 crawling, you know, opening chests, getting, I'll tell you, et cetera. I'm looking at footage of it. I'll tell you what it looks like. It looks like the games that from soft used to make before Dark Souls, uh, yeah, it looks like Kingsfield, except I'm seeing like co-op looking multiplayer things happening. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:58 At the same time. So you're going in possibly in co-op, possibly by yourself and you are dungeon crawling along with other people who are also in there who are free to their own designs who will try and steal your shit or not until you are able to extract from it. Um, I totally get the appeal. Like it's, it's, it's like a really interesting dungeon crawl and the idea of other dungeon crawlers are out there as hostile
Starting point is 01:04:30 entities is cool. Uh, my main issue is that, um, it controls and plays like shit. Like swinging your sword in that game is like, is like sub oblivion levels of feeling control. And same with like firing bows and arrows, like it, it feels like trash. Now, a lot of the goals you just outlined are one could say that when you do a mission in darkest dungeon, you're, you're
Starting point is 01:05:10 trying to get some loot, kill a monster and get the fuck out of there while you're alive, right? Um, is that a, is that a parallel here or my stretch? Okay. It's just multiplayer and first person. Okay. So combat doesn't feel good then. Oh, it feels terrible.
Starting point is 01:05:28 Like I picked up a bow and put, I want to say 12 to 18 arrows directly in the face of a one mummy before it went down and it was like, wow, so fun. Um, and then like played a sword and board character in which like the, the, the weapons, how do I put this? The weapons don't appear to hit as long as their visuals are like, it looks like you should be able to hit a couple feet in front of you, but you have to be actually fairly close.
Starting point is 01:06:12 Is this by design? Are you supposed to be struggling? Uh, apparently the, the, the pushback as I'm saying this is that, well, of course the starter gear is terrible to which like, I don't think the issue is with the starter gear. I think the issue is with the way the game feels. Um, they could totally like polish that and make it feel better and I hope they do because the concept is really cool,
Starting point is 01:06:39 but I bounced right off of it because it, it feels bad to play like it, it feels unenjoyable to move around and Oh, I thought this was the list of notables from the demos. It's notable in that its concept is cool and it's like the number one game on Twitch right now. Oh, okay. Cause it's blowing up and it's got a unique concept. And so I feel like I should bring my, I should bring it to
Starting point is 01:07:07 your attention. So people are going crazy about it. Can you give me like a, like a simple rundown of like what like a mission is like, like you drop in. Okay. You, you spawn in dark and darker. Yeah. You spawn in and you check the room that you're in, see if
Starting point is 01:07:26 it has any gear in it and equip it if you can, then you will wander around trying to avoid other players while killing monsters and looting the dungeon until you happen upon a blue portal that will allow you to extract and leave and everything in between the starting wandering around and finding the blue portal is fighting monsters, looting things, dodging traps, dealing with other players either by sneaking past them, ignoring them, being friendly or attacking them.
Starting point is 01:08:01 So does that mean permadeath? If you do die? Yeah. If you die, you will lose all of your shit. Yeah. Okay. And reset back to zero. Whereas if you extract with good items, you will keep those
Starting point is 01:08:13 items for your next run. And if you don't extract, it's the same as dying. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Well, you will die eventually if you want to extract. Right. Right.
Starting point is 01:08:25 Do you have one opportunity or is it like? There's, there's, um, there's a number of blue portals around the map. There are not enough for everyone. Oh, each one is an escape. Okay. Okay. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:08:38 Yeah. Okay. No, that's, okay. That's, I can see the fun in that. So only one gets out at a time. That's cool. I was chatting with some friends of mine at discord last night and they were playing and, um, one, they, there was three of
Starting point is 01:08:52 them playing and they found a blue portal and then one of them ran up and escaped and then the other two were trapped trying to find another blue portal, which they did not. And if you're playing co-op with people, do you have to, I guess is it like a, you're co-opping until what is found or like you agree on, you would be co-oping until you can all find one to get out or there's red portals, which bring you to a deeper sub level.
Starting point is 01:09:17 So basically the next. Okay. Attempt at it. Interesting. Um, it's a really cool idea. I just, I really hope that they make it feel better to swing the fucking sword cause like, I've been playing a lot of games lately and I've noticed that if I like fuck with the controls
Starting point is 01:09:38 for five minutes and go, you like that I might as well just move on and never come back because I'm all finicky and sensitive about that crap. But if the rule set for like how you play isn't as part of the appeal, then like someone's going to make a game that has a really tight combat and really good feeling and then add these rules to it that are also fun. There's currently three that I'm aware of.
Starting point is 01:10:03 There's a skate from Tarkov. There's hunt showdown and now there's this. Oh yeah. Hunt showdown. Right. That's what that is. It's an extraction game as well. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:13 Okay. Yeah. That game of definitely. And every time I'm like, should I get in the hunt showdown? People go, do you have two friends to play with? And then. Done. And I go, oh, okay.
Starting point is 01:10:24 And that would explain why I'm looking at here. This like really elaborate inventory screen with like the shit you can carry inventory and shop stuff is like weirdly like psycho elaborate. Like there are 10 different shops to sell your stuff to because I imagine again, like how you manage what you're holding and how you extract and stuff is like a big important part of all of this.
Starting point is 01:10:46 So yeah. Okay. Interesting. All right. Moving on. I finally played Phantom Brigade. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:55 Phantom Brigade is a robot strategy game in which you can control time and plot things out because you know everything that's going to happen. Yeah. It's super great. I don't know the last time you played it, if they had like the overworld map. They did.
Starting point is 01:11:10 You like. Yes. Moving it around. Yeah. I only have one. No, I have two problems. One is it still doesn't have full replay. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:11:19 The second thing is that I actually found it really, really, really finicky to move my actions around on the timeline because I would be trying to like find the point in the timeline on the enemy line with the mouse and like everything would be kind of going nuts. So then I would try and be going down into the bottom timeline and then trying to find it. Where the heat would run out and it would like everything is
Starting point is 01:11:45 flying about. It's really sensitive. I know exactly what you're talking about. And like so at first because some of that the parts you use because you can really customize your parts like aggressively and it feels like that's going to be a big, you know, front mission as kind of like aspect to this where like you can go in depth with every robot and build it up in depth
Starting point is 01:12:06 with every robot. Which is fun. But yeah, I feel like perfecting the turn. It takes a couple of runs where you're like, OK, you run over here and aim your shotgun that way. And you're like, OK, no, you're not getting all the shots. And then it's like, you can you plot it a couple of times until it's right.
Starting point is 01:12:26 And when you get it right, you're like, OK, but you have to be, you have to be, you have to be, you have to be, you have to be. And when you get it right, you're like, OK, but you have to be, you have to run through the timeline a few times to get the perfect one, you know. And yeah, they what like what would improve that is like perhaps a little bit more snapping, right?
Starting point is 01:12:51 Snap to target, snap to wall, right? But instead it doesn't snap to anything and it just kind of lets you really freely and loosely do things. But yeah, if they added snap targets and snap movement to certain moments, then that would absolutely smooth that problem out. I also ran to the issue where I don't think it's I don't think it's clear enough when and how much you're going
Starting point is 01:13:17 to overheat because I ran a couple of turns in which all my robots just exploded and burst into. And I'm like, where, why? Why is that happening? And then I looked down and like there's a little, there's a little fucking thing going like like a little shaded lines that go overheat. And I'm like, OK, when can I shoot?
Starting point is 01:13:50 And then it won't overheat. And then I'm having to like scroll it while looking at the overheat bar, but it's not telling me how much the weapon will overheat. When I shoot it, until I do it. And while I'm doing that and I'm trying to figure out the distances, the enemy is like, it's really finicky. I want more snapping.
Starting point is 01:14:13 I want a line on the timeline that says at this point, your heat will be at zero. So yeah, the heat is the heat. It's been a while, but the last time I played it as well, like that's the managing, that's the game part is like make your actions efficient, get better at that. And then of course, get better parts which have better heat efficiency.
Starting point is 01:14:37 But I don't mind that as much because it's like I realize that like doing a better turn, taking a better turn by playing around with my shit is like, again, that's the gameplay. But yeah, absolutely just snapping. Snapping to targets, snapping to points and stuff. And then yeah, of course the replay, which I mean, we've talked about this every time there's been a game
Starting point is 01:14:59 that you play turn by turn. It came up with fights in tight spaces as well. There's a replay, but you still see the steps and movements. It's not like a full movie type of thing. The only thing that actually plays at top to bottom, like a full cool sequence is Yomi Hussle, right? But yeah, Phantom Begrade though, same idea.
Starting point is 01:15:20 And it actually kind of, what it does show me is like I just I love that concept of like a cinematic combat scene, be it through robots, kung fu, melee, whatever, any type of thing, where you control the moment to moment action and you can make it dynamic and do cool things, you know? But yeah, I would agree with that. There's some stuff to it as well about how long it takes
Starting point is 01:15:44 on the overworld to like get to locations and to do things. You have to travel for a while in some cases. Like there's this whole big map of like different provinces you roll through as a rolling military base. And a lot of that stuff, I feel like, you know how like an ex-con between missions, there's a bunch of shit going on that you're managing.
Starting point is 01:16:04 So there's that, but there's not as much to do, but it's just as like, you could imagine there being a lot of features, but you currently don't have as many features as you want to for the amount of time it takes for you to travel from city to city and stuff, you know? But that's Phantom Brigade. Still really cool.
Starting point is 01:16:22 The proof of concept works and it is fun. But yeah, those are the touches for sure. I agree with that. Unique ass fucking style of gameplay though. Like I've never played anything like it. Yeah, I feel like changing the finnickiness of the mouse and telling me how much heat a weapon makes when it fires. Like it'll show me on the timeline when I mouse over it.
Starting point is 01:16:48 Like I want a number. Like I want, hey, this one. Minus two, minus two, minus two. I want minus 20 heat or whatever the fuck. Otherwise though, super cool. I also played tape to tape. Had you seen this at all? I think I heard that name.
Starting point is 01:17:07 Let me take a look. Tape to tape is a, when I was streaming it, the dev showed up to chat about it. Tape to tape is a hockey roguelike based off of NHLPA96. Okay, no, I've never seen this. The last good batch of hockey games to ever come out being NHL93, 94, 95, and 96. Oh my God, you're picking roguelike skill cards in the hockey game.
Starting point is 01:17:37 So you are playing NHL96 hockey games and it really feels like a really good clone of NHL96. And while you are doing that, your team is getting abilities and your team members are getting abilities. So you have your regular stats, shooting accuracy, check potential, stamina, et cetera. But on top of that, you're getting abilities
Starting point is 01:18:06 on your guys like, hit the Y button and you will slap shot the puck directly into the face of the defender. Nice, okay. Which will knock them to the floor. Hit the ice. Oh, your stick. I was able to, well, my big upgrade when I started my run
Starting point is 01:18:24 was that I bribed the ref to check people on the other team. So for the entire run that I was playing of like six games, the ref was constantly running over and knocking over the defenders while they had the puck. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And yeah, it plays like it's called tape to tape. Not enough sports games in this that have that like sports plus thuggery bit going on.
Starting point is 01:18:51 Obviously NFL Blitz is the classic. Back in the day, there was arch rivals on the NES and there was hit the ice, which is the like hockey game where like fighting is encouraged in a part of the whole bit. I'm seeing here as well, traveling the mini map with a Zamboni machine and then like traveling the mini map with a Zamboni machine
Starting point is 01:19:12 and you have an eldritch like forged blacksmith. Yeah, with the hall with the fucking Jason mask on. Somebody asked in the chat and it's a great question. What does tape to tape mean? Tape to tape is the face off and it is when the two captains have their sticks like kind of clanging together for the face off because there's tape wrapped around the stick,
Starting point is 01:19:36 which is tape to tape. So yeah, no, it plays really well. It has a really goofy, like hilarious fucking like concept in terms of its aesthetic. There's a there's like a bunch of teams in the demo. One is the one is the refs. Pat's wrong. Then what is it?
Starting point is 01:19:58 Tape to tape to pass. What? I disagree with that. What is tape to tape? Oh, it's a rogue like hockey game. Well, that's not very. Oh, I guess I'm I guess I'm wrong. I had assumed that that's what it meant.
Starting point is 01:20:24 I guess it's a pass. A crisp on the money pass from one teammate to another. That doesn't make any sense. I guess because I guess it's the from the tape on the stick to the tape on the stick. Yeah, that's what I thought. Tape on the stick to this tape on the stick when you're in the face off, but I guess it's on the in the form of a pass. I'm bugging the fuck out real hard because, you know,
Starting point is 01:20:49 we all got our blind spots, but I have never even heard of the existence of NHL hits. There was a Blitz style hockey game for the GameCube and PlayStation 2 called NHL hits. I've never even heard of this. I've never seen the box art. I've never heard anyone mention it. I have literally never witnessed this game.
Starting point is 01:21:19 Yeah, I don't think I ever saw it myself because I didn't have a GameCube. There were no IGN pages or GameSpot pages that I saw on the Internet about it. I never saw it. This looks very similar. In a video rental store at MicroPlay or Videotron, this game completely evaded my entire existence and I'm kind of like, what the fuck is happening right now? Was there an arcade machine for it?
Starting point is 01:21:47 It's a midway game. There must have been at some point. That's why. So there's all these fake teams like the refs and the, you know, basically all these goofball fake teams and then Chicago. And you're playing as not the Blackhawks. Sure. In red and black. Yeah, no, tape to tape is great.
Starting point is 01:22:12 I had a blast playing it. It's awesome. Moving on, I played a pair of PS1 emulating survival horror games. What's called Heartworm? Okay. It looks like Resident Evil 1. Like it looks like aggressively in the PS1 aesthetic. Go on, BRB. Yeah, it's okay.
Starting point is 01:22:36 It's sad piano and a lady talking about how she has to go to a haunted house and then there's a bunch of like PS1 monsters that chase after you. It's, it's okay. I'd have to see more of it. You have a camera in which you would take photos of people in order to as your primary weapon. The demo is a little strange. It's called Heartworm. The demo is a little strange in that when you go up to like a item box,
Starting point is 01:23:07 it tells you you'd be able to use this if not for it being a demo. And I was unable to find anywhere to save the game, so I did not get very far, but it's okay. It's something to watch. I also played a much, much worse Resident Evil send up called Echoes of the Living, in which Echoes of the Living is desperate to be a Resident Evil game. And it looks like a, like a modern Unreal Engine game with pre-rendered backgrounds, and it controls like complete trash.
Starting point is 01:23:49 Like it wants to do tank controls, but it's some of the worst tank controls I've ever played and is just constantly, constantly like stealing full room layouts from older Resident Evil games, like Resident Evil 1 and 3. It's bad. Echoes of the Living is very bad. So someone in the chat says it controls like RE? No. It does not control like RE.
Starting point is 01:24:16 It controls like really, really bad tank controls. Now to those of you who don't like any tank controls, I can absolutely understand the difference, but good tank controls have a like certain speed when you run and they have a certain good turning radius, so that you actually feel like in control of your character at all times. This game has tank controls that feel slippery, which is awful. Like it feels worse than like Resident Evil 1 to control. It's very, yeah. Yeah, Lost Echoes is, sorry, Lost Echoes is what I play.
Starting point is 01:24:53 Echoes of the Living is another game that's like I want to make an independent Resident Evil game, and I made a really, really bad Resident Evil game clone. Like there are like a dozen of these. Yeah, these angles and shots and stuff really just look like RE2 make style, or not even, or rather whatever. Gamecube, RE make, but if it were Raccoon City locations. Like so far the only game that I have played that is like a good Resident Evil clone is Tormented Souls. And that is like far and away the best one.
Starting point is 01:25:38 Oh, there was another one. It was the first person shooter. I can't remember the name of it though. This is people in the chat. Are any of them as good as Signalis? No! No. No way!
Starting point is 01:25:50 Are you crazy? Are you fucking nuts? Signalis is one of the best games I've ever played in my life. Yeah, have you been catching some of the pushback? Because there's some people, like people are starting to get in that space where they're like, I'm sick of people talking about how good Signalis is. Yeah, we'll get ready to be sick of it. Yeah, I've started catching some wins of that.
Starting point is 01:26:18 How do you know someone's a Signalis fan, they'll tell you. The other Resident Evil clone that was good was Nightmare of Decay. It was a first person Resident Evil 1 send up and it was pretty good. Let's see what else we got on here. I played the System Shock remake demo. I do not have a lot of experience with System Shock 1 and I dabbled in System Shock 2. Well, have you ever looked at System Shock 1 or 2? Yeah, because I was considering taking a look at it because I want to know and I want to experience Shodan.
Starting point is 01:26:57 The deal with that is that System Shock 2, which is the one that everybody really goes crazy about, is a seminal classic. It is the popular birth of the immersive sim. It is an incredible, amazing game that is unplayably old. The convenience and design improvements from the past 20 years are so enormous that playing System Shock 1 and 2 in the modern era is just constant. Why has it got to be like this? Why has it got to control like this? Why does it look like this?
Starting point is 01:27:43 They're remaking System Shock 1. Looks gorgeous. Yeah, it looks great. I was able to play it with a controller, but even if I wasn't able to play it with a controller, it has a modern inventory, it has a modern codex. It's just as easy to get insanely lost. But the graphics of the System Shock 1 remake are fascinating because they don't look like a game from 2023.
Starting point is 01:28:18 The System Shock 1 remake, you'll walk up to items and they look really pixelated. And what they look like is that this is a game from 2004 that you ported into a new engine and got a texture pack for. Do you understand the really hyper-specific aesthetic I'm describing? I understand what you're saying in that it's like when the game from 20 years ago is in 4K and is crisp as fuck and the frame rate is amazing. But I'm looking at the trailer and the trailer just looks really good. What I'm perhaps seeing is there's an area where in the trailer
Starting point is 01:29:10 where they're walking around in an environment where the wall textures look like sharp versions of something that used to be a flat square fucking JPEG. And then there were little embossed basic squares around the edge of it. Like a Wolfenstein 3D texture brought to life. It looks like the objects in the 3D world are from that time and era because that's exactly what they are. But it works though. It looks good though. It looks like a Morrowind graphics pack in the Skyrim engine. And that art style feels really, really, really legit.
Starting point is 01:29:55 Because you know how... Okay, so with Metroid Prime Remaster and the Dead Space Remaster, the same thing happened to me with both of those. In the Nintendo Direct, we'll talk about it later. They showed up, hey, there's going to be Metroid Prime Remaster. And I'm like, that's fucking stupid. That doesn't even look any different. It looks exactly the same. Why are they doing this again? $40? What a rip-off.
Starting point is 01:30:19 Only to be shown later. Yeah, no, I'm remembering Metroid Prime super wrong. And Metroid Prime 1 actually looks like dog shit compared to the new remaster. And the same thing happened to me with Dead Space. The pat filter is just so... just on and off. There is no other way to experience the world. Metroid Prime is dog shit until this one's great. But back... anyway, alright.
Starting point is 01:30:47 Anyways, okay. I didn't say Metroid Prime 1 is dog shit. No, no, no. Metroid Prime 1 looked excellent at the time. It looked amazing. And the dripping of the water down the visor freaked me the fuck out. I remember that. And I'm looking at that within that era as like, yeah, that shit was really cool. Like, I don't look back on that and think...
Starting point is 01:31:11 I don't think, oh, that looks like shit now. Like, I feel like, no, that works really well. I say it looks like shit in comparison to the new remaster, which looks quite nice. Okay. Like, it's right. Yes. When I look at the System Shock... Fine.
Starting point is 01:31:26 When I look at the System Shock remake, a game that I have no relation to, like I never played System Shock, I am imagining that what it's doing is something similar in that it is portraying itself as if this is the System Shock 1 that existed in your head from 15, 20 years ago. Yeah, okay. Because it still feels retro. It still feels like upscaled.
Starting point is 01:31:48 But it's, in fact, obviously completely remade from the ground up. Yeah, it's great. I played it for an hour. I got super lost. So you want to just specify in comparison as opposed to, like, it holds up or it doesn't hold up, you know? No, Metroid Prime 1 still looks great. Absolutely holds up. It feels very good compared to this new version.
Starting point is 01:32:05 Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, no, System Shock, it looks great. It feels good. Showdown's dialogue appears to be exactly the same. Like, same audio files and everything, which, great. Don't need to change it.
Starting point is 01:32:23 It was perfect then. Even if, like, there's a couple lines that seem low-fi, that's fine. You're listening to it over, like, a broken radio, right? Like a broken ship system. So every time, like, color-wise, looks like a game designed in the 90s. Like, it is very, it is very blue. Like, everything is, like, a really strong color everywhere. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:32:57 I'm, I've always been super curious about it. So this is pretty sick. But another thing I also wonder about is, like, okay, going back to these games, do you, have you ever played Marathon? No. Okay. Because I always think about them in the same space as, like, the pre, this is obviously the pre-Bioshock, and then the other one is the pre-Halo.
Starting point is 01:33:27 But, like, they're both from, like, mid-90s, I want to say. They're from the same, right, 94, 95-ish. Halo Zero, right? Uh... Halo Zero? Yeah. No, I just mean, in that Marathon's Bungie, isn't it? Yeah, no, that's the goof that I am making.
Starting point is 01:33:47 Okay, all right, yes. Marathon just ran straight into Halo. Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay. And I remember there's a point where I was like, I wanted to play both, I wanted to play both to, like, sort of see what the deal was because I heard good things, but System Shock was more appealing because everything about Shodan was, like, sounded really cool, and I don't know that there was any, like, story pull towards, like, yo, go play Marathon, or Marathon 2. Well, if you want to know if there's a big story pull to Marathon, you go down to Mandalore's
Starting point is 01:34:18 channel, he ran a fucking massive, insane breakdown of just how absurdly incredible and nuts the Marathon storyline is. Sick. Super, super, super impressive, and too ambitious. Okay, interesting. Yeah, those two have always been on, like, my thoughts, and they just, they float together, you know, weirdly, but I think in the end in my brain I went like, ah, probably get around to System Shock first.
Starting point is 01:34:51 Well, System Shock's coming out in, like, one month. Nice. So, now's the time. And last but not least, I played Shadows of Doubt, which is by far the most impressive game I played through this demo process. Not Shadow of A Doubt. No, Shadows of Doubt. Okay.
Starting point is 01:35:08 Shadows of Doubt is a procedurally generated murder mystery immersive sim experience. AKA, when you start Shadows of Doubt, it will generate a lo-fi, like, 1997 looking like Cyberpunk dystopic city, complete with office buildings, residential districts, et cetera. You'll then get a note underneath your door saying, investigate so and so, at which point you will discover a murder. So, in order to do this, I had to wake up out of bed, go get the note, then I had to go to the city directory in order to find where this person lived, then I had to get my lockpicks out, go down to their apartment, find where their apartment is, go up to their apartment
Starting point is 01:36:02 avoiding suspicion, then I had to avoid the camera, figure out how to get into their house. Their house had a key underneath their welcome mat, but I could have picked it or gone through the vents, went back into their apartment, found the body, took their fingerprints, scanned the room for fingerprints, redialed their phone in order to figure out who called them at what time, scoped out their house, discovered the missing contents of the safe, then as I'm trying to examine the area, the cops show up because I tricked the silent alarm upon entering. I run back up to the door, lock the door, delay the cops, turn all the lights off, try and
Starting point is 01:36:45 figure out a way out, manage to pull a chair out from his living room, stack the chair, get up to the vents, climb out through the vents, end up dropping out through the vents into a different person's apartment, try and sneak out of their apartment without waking them up, leave the building, then go over my notes which are put on a real in-game cork board which you control and decide the different pieces. I see that. Figure out, oh I got his work ID, oh I could go down there, oh I figured out that he has a receipt from this bar, I could go down there and then I could go down there, ask for clues,
Starting point is 01:37:18 ask for people, go check out his work, etc. At this point I had been streaming it for about 40 minutes and my head was going to explode so I had to call it a night. It's the coolest fucking thing ever. I remember seeing on Twitter Dave Oshry was talking about how he had accidentally like climbed in the, oh god, he had gone through the trash in someone's house and got the smelly debuff so then he had to go and shower which gave him the wetness debuff at which point he had to find a towel to dry himself off or else walk around with the wetness debuff.
Starting point is 01:37:57 He also said they were canceling all their games because Shadows of Doubt was too dank. I'm just watching the screen of people moving the Pepe Silvia cork board photos around and lining things up drawing connections and putting notes on each picture. Most of that is manual. Most of that is like player control. That looks wildly fucking complicated. It's so much. And the idea that it's a procedural generated murder mystery, I saw people describing that
Starting point is 01:38:35 if they started the game and sprinted to the fucking murder scene fast enough they could run into the killer leaving the apartment. Interesting. And that events in the game are not timed. They just proceed as normal. So like people or suspects or events will be in different periods, places, etc. based on their natural progression of the games in game simulation. At the end of it, I went down to the PD and I got a, I don't know what to call it.
Starting point is 01:39:10 I got the form for private detectives in terms of like solving murders and they were five questions. I don't know if I can remember the all, but they were like, what was the cause of death? Did you find the murder weapon? Did you discover the murderer? Did you arrest the murderer? And any evidence forthwith that you would then fill out from a chart of available clues that you had acquired over the course of the time that you had been doing it. Yeah. And also this aesthetic is like papers, please style, you know, old PC sprites, but obviously in 3D and then with lighting applied to them.
Starting point is 01:39:52 It looks gorgeous. One of the items I picked up was like a fucking newspaper and the newspapers job is to either read recent events in the world that could give you clues or you could sit down and use it to avoid pursuers because you're covered mostly by the newspaper. Oh God, these fucking minecrafts ask people and weapons. Yeah. One of the things that I noticed is that when I walked up to a person on the street and I spoke to them, there was like a massive list of potential questions, all of which went nowhere because it was all people in the wrong building. I was asking people in my own building, do you know who Craig Robinson is?
Starting point is 01:40:35 Which, yeah, they don't fucking know, but ostensibly I would be able to do that in his building and be able to get clues. Crazy, crazy fucking game, crazy game, Shadows of Doubt. They have extended that game's demo for another week. So that game will be able to be playable like for I think until I think the 16th. So I would advise everybody to check out Shadows of Doubt, that game is so fucking cool. I really hope with that type of in-depth complexity that the procedural sandbox nature of it doesn't handicap any sort of narrative stakes if they want to have a story mode to follow or something to that effect. Because you know the difference between the Hitman missions that are the generated ones versus the mainline ones
Starting point is 01:41:35 where there's a lot of more scripted and elaborate things going on? Yeah, you don't want to just feel like you're always on the procedural Hitman missions, right? Yeah, this really feels like the narrative is in the doing. Like the narrative is the natural path to solving it and the way that you decided to go about it rather than anything designed. It remains to be seen, like the demo has a 90 minute timer when you start the case, which to me says a lot about how long they expect you to spend on any particular case. But yeah, the coolest, it's the fucking coolest. I just saw somebody in the chat say Doubt Fortress, I kind of get it.
Starting point is 01:42:28 Just like just throw a million goddamn factors at it and see if you can actually do it. It's cool, I like it, Shadows of Doubt, cool game. That's it for me. If you want to see me play, sorry, if you want to see the wife play more TMC2, we'll be doing that tomorrow on Valentine's Day. And then I'll probably be covering Wild Hearts later on in the week as well, regardless of whether or not I get in contact with anybody at EA. And I'll probably be checking out the Metroid Prime remaster as well.
Starting point is 01:43:03 That's down at twitch.tv.pattstairsat. That's twitch.tv.pattstairsat for more Devil May Cry 2. Oh, also, somebody, thank you for reminding me. Have you played the theater rhythm, rhythm games? No. Okay, they put out a demo for the new one, Final Bar Lime. It's good. It's a good rhythm game. Has lots of songs in it.
Starting point is 01:43:27 They added the near music to that, didn't they? They added a lot of music to that. That has on its standard, on its standard like list, it's FF1 through 15, then it's Mystic Quest, Chocobos Dungeon, Final Fantasy Type Zero, and then the DLC will have Chrono Trigger live alive near Automata, just fucking everything, just everything. I think the final list is like 385 songs.
Starting point is 01:44:07 Tactics, yeah. I had this weird moment where I was like, oh no, I hope they don't just do only FF14 music from like 10 years ago. That game has tons of music. Like no, actually, they have all the way up to Shadowbringers music. They have 33 tracks, which I think is more than almost any other Final Fantasy games. So yay. Okay.
Starting point is 01:44:33 So far from that, it's just a solid rhythm game. Cool. Oh yeah, there's something else I thought of that I was doing, but I'll wait till I finish that and then talk about that next time. Cool. So let's take a quick word from our sponsors. And then take a quick break because I got to use the restroom. Let's do that first then, BRB.
Starting point is 01:44:58 Alright, restroom time, hooray. Incredible. Sponsors this week are... Honey is the sponsor this week. That's the one that helps you save some money when you're shopping online. I love saving money and I also love Honey. Yeah. Basically, if you don't know about it, the deal is real simple,
Starting point is 01:45:35 whether you're on your computer or on your phone as well. You can use it on your iPhone, you can... You're browsing and you get to that shopping cart, and instead of having to manually find your coupon codes or hopefully get lucky or know somebody special, Honey is going to just scour the internet for promo codes. It's going to find the ones that apply to you at that moment in time and space and then watch the savings apply as the final cost drops.
Starting point is 01:46:08 Real simple. Yeah, basically you browse as normal when you get to whatever site you're looking for. I know they apply to clothing, tech. Again, I've used it to grab some stuff off of New Egg in the past. And yeah, as soon as you get to that final checkout, you click Apply Coupons and then it finds the best discounts it can and you save some money. Yeah, again, not just on your desktop but on your iPhone as well.
Starting point is 01:46:41 You can activate it on Safari to save on the go. So if you don't have Honey, you could be straight up missing out. And you'll, of course, do yourself a solid save some money, support the show. You can get PayPal Honey for free at joinhoney.com slash superbeast. That's joinhoney.com slash superbeast. Thanks, Honey. Thanks, Honey. Another sponsor this week is Bombus.
Starting point is 01:47:12 Oh man, I need new socks. They're the ones that can help you with that problem. They can get you some cozy socks. They can get you some cozy underwear, T-shirts, all the things that are going to keep you warm in the winter and keep you cool during the summer as well because if you're doing your clothing right, you don't have to worry about the sweat
Starting point is 01:47:35 and you don't want to worry about the moisture. Well, I hate my disgusting meat body and I hate that it sweats. It turns out that geniuses have invented moisture wicking technology. There's clothing out there. There's fabric out there that doesn't have to stay soaking wet and gross, but not everybody is making use of that fabric. And it's kind of ridiculous that in the year of our Lord 2023, we're still dealing with it.
Starting point is 01:48:03 Bombus. I walked outside before the podcast and I got all sweaty because the clothes that I'm wearing are not made by Bombus and I'm upset. So if you get the Bombus, you get the sweat wicking luxuriously soft socks that don't have the seams in them and tons of different materials as well. Pima cotton or wool, cashmere even if you want to go for that. They got slippers.
Starting point is 01:48:30 They got temperature regulating socks as well. If you're jogging in the winter, doing skiing or snowboarding, you can get that stuff kept, get your toes all kept up, tight and warm as well. And of course, for every purchase you make, Bombus donates another pair to someone experiencing homelessness. So go to bombus.com slash superbeast and use code superbeast for 20% off your first purchase.
Starting point is 01:49:04 Go to bombus.com slash superbeast and use the code superbeast at checkout. Thanks Bombus. Thank you. Boop, boop, boop. Beepity, beep. Yep, last but not least, our sponsor this week is Green Chef, who are, as the name implies, getting you healthier foods,
Starting point is 01:49:38 healthier meals because eating better is, it's kind of, you know, it's not mandatory, but, you know, you should start doing it because you're going to regret it sooner rather than later if you start, if you keep shoveling crap into your body. So Green Chef, they're going to make eating well an easier thing for you if you're doing vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, paleo, keto, whatever your styles or just regular good old fashioned balanced meals.

Starting point is 01:50:41 with your weekly order. And if you want more servings of a particular recipe as well, you can increase the portions with your weekly order with just one click. So you got fully customizable options as well while you're eating healthy. Not just all the greens, of course. You can get yourself some USDA certified organic ground beef or chicken or wild caught sockeye salmon. Get your proteins.
Starting point is 01:51:06 They're important as well. 10 minute lunches, all of that, they got you covered. So go check them out. The list of stuff is endless. And what you want to do is go to greenchef.com and use the code SuperBeast60 to get 60% off plus free shipping. One more time, that's greenchef.com slash SuperBeast60 and use code SuperBeast60
Starting point is 01:51:37 to get 60% off plus free shipping. That's the number one meal kit for eating well. Thanks, GreenChef. Thanks, GreenChef. Okay. All right. Stuff this week. The Nintendo Direct is all-encompassing.
Starting point is 01:52:02 It's a giant list of things. Hey, before that, Woolly. But I've got an idea for you. What if to get super good fighting game footage, you went down to your local terminal illness children's hospital and donated some Xboxes so you could style on those sick kids like no one has styled ever before
Starting point is 01:52:30 and get tons of sick clips for your YouTube channel. I was going to suggest that we cover the small things before we get to the Nintendo Direct as well. That sounds like a good idea. Where are we going? Is this like Child's Play Charity? What are you talking about? There's a cod player who got caught
Starting point is 01:52:54 trying to organize fucking cancer child lobbies for sick clips for his YouTube channel. Okay, well... Think of the lobbies, bro. Think of the lobbies. These kids have never played Call of Duty before. Can you fill people in while I read through because there's a whole conversation here
Starting point is 01:53:25 and that sounds fucking... That's pretty much it. That's the whole gimmick. Think of the incredible clips we could get styling on these kids in a terminally ill cancer ward. They never played Call of Duty before. Oh, God.
Starting point is 01:53:44 It's an embed inside an embed. Is this a hustle or a scam? Did the kids have fun? Hold on, there's a reply to the reply that's... Okay. I saw this this morning and couldn't fucking believe it. We were added for the Castle Super Beast take on setting up gauntlets of sick children to style on.
Starting point is 01:54:24 Okay. There's a children's terminal illness clinic near me and they let the kids play on Xboxes that were donated. You can go volunteer to help and be friendly to the kids and keep them company so that they have good memories for their final days or whatever. Since all the old gen games are so cheap right now, I'm thinking I'll get those $40 Japanese Xbox cards
Starting point is 01:54:46 for five bucks each and just start volunteering and downloading Cod 3 on all the Xboxes there. Could also uninstall every other game just to help even further. Just an idea though. Gotta get a background check and ship before you can volunteer. I'll stop by on Monday, see if I can get the ball rolling on this. Lobbies will be insane, bro.
Starting point is 01:55:05 For real? Yeah, bro. Realistically, probably couldn't get a full 12v12 with just kids. Maybe 12 to 15 of them will fall for it. But I've just got to trick them. Uh... Gotta trick them into thinking I'm their friend enough so I could show them how when to join.
Starting point is 01:55:26 We could have some of the best lobbies we could get. Lobbies filled with kids who have never played the game before. The clips we will hit. This is like the absolute end game of like beating up the Fortnite children or people loading into 3 in the morning. Remember a while ago I found out that a lot of Call of Duty streamers are loading into lobbies at 3.30 in the morning
Starting point is 01:55:55 so they're playing against children who are going to school? This is so cartoonishly evil sounding that I kind of don't believe it's real. I kind of believe we're getting trolled by some people who know how to get talked about. This seems incredulously... I don't believe it. Yeah, no, I'm just not buying this.
Starting point is 01:56:21 Does it mean I'm a sicko to be like, I want this to be real? Well, that's how these things pop off is by reaching out to those who wish to live in that world and then choose to believe that it is real. Yeah. Now, that sounds like some people
Starting point is 01:56:44 are getting their fucking jollies. Alright, well, what's up with the Nintendo Direct? Well, no, before the Nintendo Direct. Oh, before that. You know who's getting their jollies? Who's that? Yoko Taro. What? Why?
Starting point is 01:57:05 Because Yoko Taro managed to convince Sega to work on and create a new game where Sega is an evil corporation that has taken over the world and it is up to the player to free the world from the evil clutches of Sega using waifu versions of old Sega classic platforms and games. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:57:33 Including OutRun, Afterburner, Virtua Cop, and Virtua Fighter in waifu form. And you must free the world from Sega's clutches using the old Sega. And Yoko Taro actually got this green late. This is great. This is just like... What was it called, Sega Ga Girls?
Starting point is 01:57:57 But to the next level. Because Sega Ga Girls was just like cute waifu versions of consoles doing their little, you know, cutesy skits and stuff. This is going to like... No. The evil Sega Corp must be destroyed.
Starting point is 01:58:13 We must bring it down with the memories of the old Sega. So... Oh my god. So they've become the Sony in the final episode of Sekita Sanchiro. And Sekita Sanchiro and the fucking Virtua Fighter and Virtua Cop girls have to go kill Sega? Yeah. Not Sega Ga Girls.
Starting point is 01:58:38 That's rather Seha Girls. The Seha Ga Ga was the Dreamcast RPG. Yeah. Okay. Right. Yeah. No, man. Only Yoko Taro can pull this off, you know.
Starting point is 01:58:50 And God bless. Because like you need the clout that he has to convince a company to paint them as evil rulers of the world, you know, and then like use the old memories of the heroes to defeat them and bring the truth, the Sega truth out. So it's a prank. And, you know, to be fair, he also did have you fighting off fucking Screenix execs,
Starting point is 01:59:20 you know what I mean, in Nier. So it ain't the first time and it probably won't be the last, but like the board meeting when people were convinced to like put themselves as the evil board in that giant tower in the middle of the city. I bet a bunch of them thought that was cool. Green lights are Sonic the Hedgehog icons and red lights are Robotnik icons.
Starting point is 01:59:46 Oh, that's great. You're right. That's great. Yeah. Where's the quote? Oh, it's called 404 game reset is the name of the franchise. And what was it? There was a quote somewhere.
Starting point is 02:00:06 I can't find it where he was like, yeah, I didn't think they'd like being portrayed as the villains, but anyway, we're doing it. Yeah. Yeah, I know exactly. It's a game that features Sega's IP. So I thought that Sega should be in the game, but I didn't think they'd want to see a game that portrayed it well.
Starting point is 02:00:30 So I portrayed it negatively. It imagines that things were to go so well for Sega that they get out of control and it could end up like this. Sure. Yeah. That's great. Fantastic. I just want to see what all the characters look like.
Starting point is 02:00:48 Yeah, yeah. There's a couple of previews of them so far. There's the virtual fighter girl that has like a stand of Akira floating next to her doing the fucking elbow block, you know, the Tetsuzanko setup. The virtual cop girl has like bullets being summoned around her and she's got her cop badge as well. Outrun girl obviously blonde with a red dress with car parts surrounding her.
Starting point is 02:01:19 You know, all that, whatever, all that jazz. But just, yeah, premise on its own takes the cake and is more interesting than even the idea of Neptunia Sega girls or whatever. Anyway, so that's hilarious. Other thing, we already touched on, you know, the Metroid Prime shadow drop and that's always cool to see when a game just like, hey, it's out fucking now. Go get it.
Starting point is 02:01:47 And that's exciting. Plus Metroid Prime is fucking amazing. It's my favorite of the trilogy. I could, I could like, I'm like a toss up between one and two. I think those are great. I don't like three very much. Yeah, three had cool stuff. But overall, I enjoyed one the most pound for pound moment to moment as well.
Starting point is 02:02:11 And like the negatives in, you know, in two and three, I feel like kind of those memories come shine to the forefront more. Like two with echoes. I remember like, I fucking love the God, the white suit. The white suit. The light suit. Yeah, the light suit. The light suit is one of the cleanest Samus designs ever.
Starting point is 02:02:36 But I also remember how bad the fucking little end of game puzzle, like hidden thing was and how much that felt like Triforce pieces. I feel, I feel genuinely like I had the, I'm the only person in the world because every time I talk to somebody about my Metroid Prime two, I have this exact like discussion. When the game told me to go get those artifacts, I had already gotten all of them, but two wilds. That's so unusual because I was, I was like just scraping the earth as I went. Yeah. And so me going and getting the remaining ones took like 10 minutes.
Starting point is 02:03:19 It do. It's a, it's a, it's an experience akin to Triforce pieces in Wind Waker. Like it's a fucking flow breaker, man. You know. Nah, just break your flow on purpose before, but flow to a horrible crawl for most of the game and then the end will go really smooth. Obviously. The other thing too is while all the music is fantastic, the music in one is also the
Starting point is 02:03:49 most memorable to me. You know, every, like all that stuff over time, when I'm think, whenever I play like Metroid Prime music in my head, you know, I'm thinking of fucking Fadrana drifts and I'm thinking of, you know, the, the Temple of the Chozo and the title screen, you know, all that shit. So, yeah. So remember people complaining that like a full half of Metroid Prime two is this very dark purple.
Starting point is 02:04:20 It is. The dark world is really, yeah, it's true. It's light world, dark world, right? You're doing it. I'm also on like this alternate plane where I'm like, that's my favorite color. So every time I went to the dark world, I was like, oh, sick. I love this place. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:04:40 I love me some purple too. That's, uh, that's one of my faves as well. Um, only thing is, is light world had more variety to it. It did. Yeah. Than just dark and purple, you know, shadow world. So you gotta, gotta get, anyways, the, um, that's all cool. Uh, what's not cool, however, is, um, yeah, just, you know, one of these things that you
Starting point is 02:05:05 kind of like see from time to time is like the original, um, designer senior in gameplay engineer, uh, Zoid Kirch on Twitter basically was like, Hey, awesome work on the remaster. That's super cool. Kind of sucks the doors kind of sucks that they took the, everyone's name out of the credits. Oh, that too. Yeah. Just put it all in a single card that says based on the work of Metroid prime, you know,
Starting point is 02:05:37 that sucks. Just put it in. Just come on, man. I know you have worked on games before and you've been in the credits and you've also been excluded from the credits. Sure have. And I, I genuinely, like maybe you can solve the, the last piece of the puzzle credits and putting people's names in a list does not seem to be the most work intensive part of
Starting point is 02:06:04 making a game. No. Because you're putting people's names in a list. Yes. And it scrolls. Yes. Why is it so contentious over and over and over to not include people for whatever reason? Because some people, oftentimes the really egotistical producers and people who are making
Starting point is 02:06:28 the final call will use credits as a dick measuring opportunity to, you know, exclude people they particularly don't like to use it as a means of getting back for people over drama in certain situations. If someone did some work, but they got fired or left under particular circumstances that were not amicable, people will always workplace politics, basically. Workplace politics is 100% of the reason why you see that 99% if you want to say, you know what I mean? Like that's, that's what it comes down to.
Starting point is 02:07:06 There's stuff where it's like, sometimes you just have that bit where like, oh yeah, there's super long credits or whatever, but then you put a speed up button, right? No, whatever. There's 45 minute credits for some Ooby and EA games and out there. So, you know, man, workplace politics very often, if not always is the thing. And the definition of that, I will say extends into the shame of crediting a QA team that was outsourced, right, that the person, again, the people that are that are that are egotistical and whatnot, they look at a bunch of names of people that they don't know because they
Starting point is 02:07:43 worked on the game elsewhere. And if you're not in the office with me and I don't know your name and I don't recognize your face, it doesn't really really feel like you worked on it, you know, you guys don't count. Plus it looks bad that we had to go take our game and hand it off to other people for assistance on QA. So we look a lot more clean if we can just put one logo amongst the many that says, hey, VMC labs, Babel, keywords, whatever, you know, they did some stuff.
Starting point is 02:08:11 Who knows? What are they the Kodak guys? They licensed some of the sound effects? Cool. All right. Yeah, sure. Soft deck, Kodak testing, you know, and you just hand wave it or you even sometimes arrange and pay for your package that says no credits whatsoever.
Starting point is 02:08:29 We'll just stealth you guys as a secret thing, you know, perhaps because we don't want some people to know about how the budget was spent. Perhaps we don't want to leave an impression, but it always comes down to these politics, right? Someone might look and see that you hired the team that you weren't supposed to because but you needed help because your game was falling apart and your internal team that you assured the higher ups would be able to take care of things was not able to take care of things, right?
Starting point is 02:08:57 It but it always always comes down to this. Yes, it's bullshit every time, every time it's so stupid because like no one but the people in the credits and the friends of family of the people in the credits care about credits. So any any even potential of like, oh, well, we have to make the credits go faster. I might you mean the thing 99% of people skip in the first place? Like no, it's it's just a nice little bonus for the people who worked on it to see their name represented as a part of the communal effort and be like, oh, look, hey, yes, there
Starting point is 02:09:29 I am. And it goes on your resume and you can say, hey, I did this shit and like, you know, I mean, most of the time you can just have it on your resume anyway and you can, you know, like that's not that's going to be verified very quickly. But in some cases, if someone is particularly curious about something and they want to go look that shit up and like, who was the person that was in charge of the original score on Death Stranding? Oh, Ludwig Forsel, who's that?
Starting point is 02:09:56 OK, let's go check that out. Like you fucking just, you know, every artist gets a chance at a signature on the work that they fucking put out. It's real simple. So yeah, just a shitty attitude, man. Like almost every time because it's a list of words. It's the easiest thing in the world. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:10:13 Well, Willie, so yeah, some, sometimes correctly crediting people for their work is not the easiest thing in the world. Do you have the news story about the Witcher this week? I don't. But I was just going to say last bit that, you know, we talk about how we've, yeah, a couple of times like I've been credited. Sometimes I've been credited and I've been, you know, not credited sometimes. There are.
Starting point is 02:10:45 Like. I would say nine times out of 10, but it's really more like. Twenty nine times out of 30. OK, I get uncredited on my on the work I've done. There are. Ducks like there are so few games that I have credit on versus the hundreds that I've worked on. It's incredibly in the minority.
Starting point is 02:11:16 You know, in some cases, I understand if it's a short term of work where it's like, ah, you touched it for a couple of days and it's like, yeah, I get that. That's fine. But there should have worked on for a while. Many projects that are just like, nope. You know, and you can go in the database and you can see the names of everyone who entered their shit and see how many things they entered. And you can look at the contributions just by sorting by name.
Starting point is 02:11:42 You know, but yeah, are you sure you worked on it? No, you know what? Turns out I didn't just went through it, saw nothing. What is happening with the sometimes it's hard to credit people for their work. So the Witcher three recently got re-released with the next gen version on PC and the consoles, right? The news article from Eurogamer, which I went through a bunch of them to find the phrasing that I like the best is quote CD Projekt Red confirms it's working to address
Starting point is 02:12:18 the inclusions of realistic vaginas. And oh, yes, I did see that story. Yes, I was trying to link it to the credits thing and I couldn't find I couldn't find the segue. So that turns out there's tons of super highly detailed pussy textures. Yeah, yeah, in the next gen release that they're like, huh, how'd these get here? Huh, that's weird. Merging mods is complicated. There's a lot of stuff going on.
Starting point is 02:12:48 I guess we must have missed it, except moving on to Witcher three vagina modder claims that CD Projekt Red used their mod without permission. The modder alleges that the Witcher three studio added their quote vaginas for everyone and quote mod to the next gen came without talking to them. OK, so this is one of those definitive edition using the community. So expand the community mods, but they didn't do it their own version. They literally. So there was a lot of they integrated some gameplay mods.
Starting point is 02:13:26 They integrated some visual mods and some texture mods to the game to clean it up. And they were you know, the community we we implemented some of the most popular mods from the community, yada, yada, yada. Well, apparently someone at CD Projekt Red snuck in the vaginas for everyone mod either on purpose or by accident into the merged mod pack, I won't telling anyone or asking the mod creator for permission, who says I will I will I will not be denied my kuchi credit. I will tell you right now when they gave me the game and they also
Starting point is 02:14:06 and I also had the the list of mods that they included. Vaginas for everyone was not a listed mod as a community mod that was being included. So shame on you. So you probably read for not crediting this vagina motor. No, kuchi credit's real. You got to you got to you got to, you know, call it out. Someone worked hard on the the strip.
Starting point is 02:14:34 There you go. Oops. Wow. Tell I mean, priorities, though, right? So I guess prior to that, everyone like it was just like like like the mannequin Barbie doll naked. Well, yeah, because there's like naked human looking women that are a horrible monster like Bruja, right, like vampire ladies. And they just they just didn't have like visible genitalia.
Starting point is 02:15:02 And then all of a sudden people noticed a little while ago, like, oh, that's weird fighting a lot of monsters with fat pussies. What's up with that? Weird. Is it is it a lot of monsters? Is that is that where the mod went to work? Yeah, I believe it. I believe it gave like vaginas to every applicable character that it would be appropriate for.
Starting point is 02:15:30 So all monsters that are based off like the human woman template. Just pushing them up. Damn, even the Crohn's, even the horrible freak Crohn's. Just gonna not needed. If you want to look feels feel free to type in any of the things that we have said now, and you'll be able to find it. It's like the credit got snatched away. Sure did.
Starting point is 02:16:06 Hmm. Wait a second, did this come out of the fucking? Did the Witcher 3 definitive addition come out on the switch? I'm going to go ahead and guess no. No, it did not. It's I'm going to go ahead and look around the room. It did not. And I'm going to reach out and I'm going to look at Toad over here,
Starting point is 02:16:31 sitting on my shelf, and I'm going to go ahead and say no. The pussy mod did not come to Witcher 3 on the switch available now. I don't think that that was going to be sitting there on the e shop next to Mario Kart 8 DLC. All right. Yeah. Just Witcher 3 now with cuts. Cool.
Starting point is 02:16:58 Great. Thanks. Perfect. It's what it was missing, apparently. I can only imagine having the fun time of going through like the change log and like who put this in here? Who was it? You can find it, I assume, right?
Starting point is 02:17:20 When you look at who adds what to what build, you can track that down. Like when was it added and by whom? Speaking of. Yeah, yeah, no, yeah, no, no, I was nothing. OK, yeah, speaking of nothing, the Pikmin four. Yeah, yeah. They announced Pikmin four. Speaking of vaginas, have you got a question?
Starting point is 02:17:55 Speaking of vaginas, have you guys seen that he was Pikmin? Damn. Yeah, yeah, it's got a dog in it. I don't understand Pikmin at all. I don't I don't get it. I heard Pikmin three was fucking phenomenal. So it's I guess it's like damn. I heard that every time that the the new Pikmin game every time
Starting point is 02:18:26 the New Year's Pikmin game is like is incredible. It's amazing. And I watched video of it and I'm like, I don't get it. Yeah, I think if you're down for what Pikmin does, you know, if you're down for the little army of of of Miyamoto's garden around you and throwing them at problems and having them sacrifice themselves to save the day and or open doors, then yeah, you just you get on board with it.
Starting point is 02:18:54 I think as well, too, part of the novelty is like the whole honey, I shrunk the kids vibe of like walking through the grass in a in a in a micro shrunk way, you know. Yeah, I should probably check one of those out at some point. But that's coming July 21st this year. So that's cool. What else came completely get like deleted and they had to start over or am I thinking of a different game?
Starting point is 02:19:24 I had never heard of a Pikmin 4 existing until now. But yeah, a couple of things, though. So we got to roll, we got to roll through because again, not everything worth mentioning, but they talked about the they shut off the Xenoblade DLC expansion pass, which I think people are saying ages up some characters that people know. There's like a time skip sort of design thing discussion to that. Fucking Samba de Amigo comes back.
Starting point is 02:19:57 That's wild, because like that is such a weird like you think it would be a dead franchise, but it's not because there was a Wii game. You know, like they do kind of show up every once in a while and be like, yo, remember that monkey still around? And then it makes me think of Amingo, the cactus man from Marvel 2 who will never, ever, ever see the light of day again. Never. He's he died. That's that's it. It's done. It's sad.
Starting point is 02:20:31 Him and Ruby Heart. But yeah, no, the one but like the show off Samba de Amigo Party Central and it's got all these little fun dancing mini games and all the things you'd expect with, you know, joy con gyros and stuff. But the thing that caught my attention is a Fall Guys style online multiplayer survival mode, which involves dancing the best until you're the last one standing with the implication being
Starting point is 02:20:58 that if two people are so fucking good at playing Samba de Amigo, they might never stop and therefore dance until they fall dead. If they have perfect scores forever, they're like, I don't know how that goes. But whatever the end of the ring survival mechanic might be, if two people are perfect, perfect at their scores. Do they just dance until someone has to go to the hospital? What do we do here? Fucking do it.
Starting point is 02:21:32 Dance until you're dead. A survival based system in a rhythm game feels like it might present some health problems. No, die, perish, even. Um, then we got some fucking some good shit, good food. Finally, fashion dreamer, let's go. I absolutely love the idea of a game that is all about the dress up, all about the character creator. Yeah, I was watching I was watching that with Paige and she just stood.
Starting point is 02:22:21 She sat right up. I was like, oh, hell, yeah, you fucking you get the drip. You serve looks and then that's the game. And then people watch it and they see you and they go, damn. Whoa, look at that. And then you're like, yeah, and then you get points. Fuck, yeah, I certainly hope that you can like not just walk around Shibuya and impress the locals.
Starting point is 02:22:47 I hope you can like fucking, you know, it says you become a fashion influencer. But I don't know if that means like take your brand to fucking Paris fashion. We can go nuts on the runway. Um, it does give a vibe that it's more like, hey, it's like the world ends with you where you can make the kids hanging out downtown go, oh, that's sort of it. But I hope there's more to it than just impressing Japan, you know? Because, yeah, that's a that is a fun ass concept that like I could definitely sit there, come up with some outfits
Starting point is 02:23:23 and then save them in different categories and go like, here's the fall collection. You know, love it, love it. Then, yes, stuff we saw before. Tron Identity, a which was a like, I guess it like visual novel style RPGish looking thing. Yeah, super weird, which, you know what, though, like if Tron games can't figure out the gameplay and if the actual games inside of Tron like fucking snake bike and all that, just yeah, if they're not going to nail it,
Starting point is 02:24:06 then, yeah, let's just play a game where the visuals are the thing that carries it forward because that's what Tron is about. Tron is all aesthetic, you know, just straight up acknowledge it. They've reported Ghost Trick a bunch of times, but this looks like the first time they're doing a full on remake of it. So the last time I played Ghost Trick was when they made the piece, the iOS port, actually. I'm so glad there's going to be a way to play Ghost Trick in the future
Starting point is 02:24:39 because that game was like trapped as like a late era print DS game. And then it was trapped on an iOS version that then it like the iOS version deprecated it and so like it stopped working after a year or two. And there was like no real way to play Ghost Trick. And now it's just like now everybody can find out how about how fucking Missile is the best dog in video games. It's an HD remaster. OK, yeah, not a full remake then, my mistake. Great.
Starting point is 02:25:13 Then we saw Deca Police, OK. There were two magic police games. Yeah, shown. Deca Police like like it's it's all that astral chain style anime cop vibes going with a fucking what appears to be just like, yeah, persona cop showing up and these kids are like doing their thing. And the main one in the trailer is like, I'm going to fucking show these greedy
Starting point is 02:25:47 pigs, the justice or whatever. Like you got you got a real got a real hot head on our hands. And we're going to go into the VR world and we'll let's let's simulate some of these procedures in the VR world, because, God forbid, we let them loose on the actual population. And then we have to answer for anything that happens. But, you know, the unions will take care of it. Don't worry about it.
Starting point is 02:26:15 Deca Police, damn. Yeah. Hey, man. Then like I can't commit a crime against anyone as a cop in a virtual world, man. I could do anything. Yo, like sick ass like anime and video game Copaganda is like super sick. Like I'm watching these trailer again. Yeah, no, I like the I like the art style.
Starting point is 02:26:46 I like, you know, and you're seeing RPG mechanics and shit going on. I'm like, OK, OK, well, let's see what's up. So there's also a different one made by the the Dagnab, Grandpa, people that is also a magical cop game. Do you remember what the name of that is? I can't I literally my brain calls a dead dog on grandpa cop game. Scrolling through the list. Rain code.
Starting point is 02:27:20 Rain code. OK. What the fuck is. Like I keep getting that and Deca Police confused over and over and over. That was not on the roundup I pulled over here. Probably because it wasn't a new thing. It was just a new trailer. OK, Spike Chunsoft. Yeah. Sure.
Starting point is 02:27:42 It's also magical police, but with ghosts. Yeah, though, and and and Danganronpa flavor. Aggressively, a dungeon, I mean, again, I think I think I'm repeating myself, but this protagonist for rain code, Yuma is wearing a hat and I would put money down that that hat is concealing a single spike of hair because the classic protagonist spike from Danganronpa is like here's the screenshot is a thing. They're literally there you go.
Starting point is 02:28:23 So it makes literally exactly a million percent. That's how you know. There you go. Done. Uh, OK, that's upsetting that you were able to just lock in on that, dude. I mean, if you play those games, it's like the most obvious thing. Like it's for sure. Yeah.
Starting point is 02:28:46 So then we saw another trailer for Sareza and the lost demon. And I mean, look, man, I wish that came the best. Like I hope I don't. I legitimately do wish that came the right when they're like, you know, it is Sheshah has to fight so she can't fight. You're like, right, it's a different genre. So Sheshah is going to do all the fighting and do the puzzle stuff. And you know what, I hope it's hope it's fun.
Starting point is 02:29:12 Hope I hope the package is worth the money they're charging for it. I, you know, maybe there's a whole lot of video game there, despite the way it looks, that that that can justify it. I also hope there is ninety four Canadian dollars worth of video game. Hey, man, subspace emissary. Damn, didn't expect it, got that shit. Wow, that was a lot of video game, you know. Subspace emissary fucking blue cut scenes were awesome.
Starting point is 02:29:49 But yeah, the game fucking sucked. The point, the point being, Sakurai delivers more game than your for your buck in all of his games. And I don't know that Bayo Netta Origins is going to do that. But Bayonetta won get before hours long. Yeah, yeah. Um, yeah, subspace emissary was fucking hot shit.
Starting point is 02:30:23 I fucking I also remember how much game you got for Kid Icarus uprising. Just get Icarus had enough way more than you signed up for kill you. That's that's how I think of Kid Icarus's level of content. Enough to kill you and every bone in your body. No, I think I think Sarazan, the lost demon is is fundraising for platinum. I think that's kind of, you know, it's a little bit of that to keep the lights on. Drive. That's like even for me, that's like a really depressing way to look at
Starting point is 02:31:04 like a problem. What do they call them? Yo, people from Philadelphia, don't you guys have those like benefits like a a beef and beer you got beef and beers? Yeah, I think I think that's a filling thing where you do like a benefit to raise money for someone. This is like Bayonetta Origins is a beef and beer for platinum. Oh, it's so sick. So embarrassing.
Starting point is 02:31:33 Oh, man, that somebody I just saw something in the chat that so perfectly felt like emulated how I felt like I feel like I can now put a point on my my distaste for Sarazan and the what's it called Sarazan Enchanted Forest lost demon lost last demon. I feel like the new Mario game was kind of mid because Nintendo put all their time and money into the new Captain Toad. Like that's that's how I feel when I look at Bayo three and Sarazan and the lost demon, I feel like a high end Captain Toad game is coming out right after
Starting point is 02:32:19 like a really mediocre Mario game. What if no, that doesn't work because I was going to say I was going to say Squall stole all the money right back squall and FF eight stole all the money so that no other games could afford to even end right. We need to do that goddamn Pepsi ad. All right. Yeah, the Xenogears guys are horribly over budget and over time. But still though.
Starting point is 02:32:52 That was that team's first game. I feel bad that they did go wildly over budget. Yeah, we got DLC announced for a bunch of the first party stuff. So obviously Splatoon three, Fire Emblem, etc. They OK, this is a name we saw before Harmony, the Fall of Reverie, the new Dotonaut game, animated trailer 2D, but no gameplay. So still not sure like there was a very strange screenshot at some point in that trailer of like a grid that I didn't understand.
Starting point is 02:33:28 I saw scrolling back through it to go, was that a kind of it could have been. But it could have also just been like the equivalent of if it were a 3D trailer and the camera settles behind the main character and you know, like, you're like, ah, stop fucking around, you know, that's not real. In this case, it's 2D animated. So it's like I'm like I respected the effort and be, you know, looks it's a cool introduction to the world. But yeah, still don't know what it exactly is.
Starting point is 02:33:55 It appears to be a visual novel. It appears to be like like a Dotonaut game, but instead of, you know, the animated cutscenes that like Life of Strange would have, it appears to be a pure visual novel. If it's all 2D and, you know, nicely hand drawn like that, that would be cool. Because yeah, it was nice animation, you know. I did think it's pretty funny that as I was watching the trailer, I'm like, oh, and she has the power of empathy like the last life is strange.
Starting point is 02:34:23 And then they just describe and this character with the power of telepathy. And I'm like, OK, wow, that's four games in a row that are the same game to some degree like visual novel over and over and over. But the main character has a power. Wow. And they're all less interesting than the first one that you started with. So I was going to say, is it still making money? Is it, you know, is Life is Strange still popping off? It definitely got successful enough for them to do like a spin off and a sequel.
Starting point is 02:34:59 Right. You're right. Clearly, that's the that's the money. And then Vampire, I don't know. I've heard anyone talking about it. That game was cool before. It was really cool before. And I really cool like eat people and you're locking off parts of the game. So like that game was like a pretty OK action game,
Starting point is 02:35:21 but you wandered around a city to like do side quests and stuff like that. And the main thing was that you absolutely needed to eat characters, not like random people, but characters to not die of vampire. You know, the starvation. But there weren't enough like free, unimportant characters to eat to complete the game. So you would absolutely have to like kill off side quests and opportunities because you're like, well, got to eat somebody. And this is the person I like the least, I guess.
Starting point is 02:35:58 Because I every every time I see it, though, I kind of go. Right, I should play Vampire, the masquerade. Vampire, the mass and figure out lines, figure out the steps to get that to get to that point. You know, what? Yeah, yeah, yeah. With this. Oh, I know, I know. I played masquerade, the bloodlines. Yeah, yeah. You know what happened?
Starting point is 02:36:23 Mm hmm. Every single video I ever made of it is worldwide blocked. You set it up and got past the actual platform problem and the content can't go online. I know, here's what happened. I did the entire LP and then a year and a half later, when the Twitch DMCA stuff started, YouTube put in all the fucking prodigy music that was in Vampire, the masquerade bloodlines and single fucking part. Yeah, worldwide blocked.
Starting point is 02:37:01 Wow, not even like demonetized. Blocked. Fuck. So for those of you who enjoyed my Vampire, the masquerade bloodlines LP, I hope you watched it in its entirety because it's fucking gone. That's shit. Damn. Yeah, that thing. I mean, well, whatever, I've been talking about it, but like the some stuff, like stuff that gets batch uploaded and hitting and hits the content ID stuff,
Starting point is 02:37:27 like disco, you know, just unbelievable, massive swaths of disco content just getting hit. Oh, yeah, that happened. Yeah, because I did I did my videos and I'm like, yeah, page. So you put the streamer mode on, it's fine. And then page put up her videos on the streamer mode and then all of a sudden all of her uploads got demonetized. Yeah, yeah, because because fuck you. The theme song from Hunter Hunter as well, getting that kind of makes sense.
Starting point is 02:37:57 You know, not initially, it was fine for a while, but then it suddenly wasn't. So anyway, yeah. There's a there's a game that got announced called Disney Illusion Island, which appears to be Cuphead Disney. Where you can play as Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald as if it were Mario, Luigi, Princess and Toad from Mario 2. Looks like a video game. Looks pretty cool.
Starting point is 02:38:28 I'm I'm it's like, yeah, that looks fun, man. It's kind of a Rayman Legends, that's another Rayman Legends. That's a right. That's that's a good analogy. The hand the hand drawn aspect to it. Let me let me let me pull that up and take another look. The the style to it was. Pretty exaggerated.
Starting point is 02:38:52 I liked I liked the the way the characters looked. The characters look too small. The map it is zoomed out quite a bit. But yeah, if it's just like it looks like a simple four player, you know, fucking platform, jump, grab, swing, beat the boss. Simple video game. Cool. I like that.
Starting point is 02:39:20 Yeah, backgrounds as well. Everything looks really hand drawn. And I feel like the logo and aesthetic they're going for and some of the new stuff. OK, yeah, no, there we go. Anyway. Yeah. Yeah, no, more Rayman than Cophead. That's true. That's true.
Starting point is 02:39:43 Definitely more Rayman than Cophead. Seems pretty cool. Fucking years later. Finally, I guess it's been like five years or so, but Cata Mary re-roll. We love Cata Mary. Finally, I don't know why it took so long for them to get around to it, but we're finally getting a remake for Cata Mary, too. That's great, because that's where we can stop.
Starting point is 02:40:16 Right? That's where finally, after all these years of Katamari, re-releases, stupid sequels and ports, we can finally stop. This is where Cata Takahashi stops. This is where Katamari stops. It's real simple, legit. Like Katamari is like was such a good feeling. Yeah, and like just completely inverted in my heart.
Starting point is 02:40:40 And I look at it with disdain. There can be more Katamari if Cata Takahashi comes back and decides to make them. But in the meantime, there are two. Yeah, because we love Katamari is an improved sequel to the first one and Kata Takahashi was still there, as you pointed out. And everything that came after that is soulless. You know, so that's it.
Starting point is 02:41:06 That's dropping. Fuck. Yo, yeah, there was a what is the studio called again? Quebec City, Messenger, sub, no shit. Anyway, the game is Sea of Stars. It was the is pretty classic looking RPG.
Starting point is 02:41:34 Sabotage QC, that's it. Sabotage. Yeah, I met some of those dudes at I think it was like a PAX or so. It's pretty cool. And like the Messenger was obviously a ton of fun, really good. Like sort of, you know, Ninja Gaiden send up and then you build on top of it and do more and Sea of Stars looks like that kind of thing, like doing their send up to, you know, any Super Nintendo era RPG. And when I think about like that one that came out for the DS, that
Starting point is 02:42:09 God, I'll always forget its name, but it looked like Chrono Trigger Sprites just slightly recolored almost. And like as much as it's like I get it, you want to do your own version of like a Chrono Trigger thing, it's much more charming if you have your own sprite art style that is right for the time and era, but it's also clearly your own thing, you know, like there's a way to kind of do that. And I feel like this does a good job of that. Yeah, Sea of Stars looks absolutely fucking like ridiculously incredible.
Starting point is 02:42:44 I should definitely play the demo that's on the switch. You know, yeah, you get your Star Ocean, your Golden Sun vibe, all of that. Right. I think it's yeah, I think it's it's it's it's cool when you can evoke the era without people going, did you just edit those Sprites? You know, like the answer is yes, I did. What are you going to do about it? Because then because, you know, when you when you're when you're looking at,
Starting point is 02:43:11 you know, obviously like Shovel Knight and Cave Story, you're like, no, this is doing it. This is absolutely its own thing, but it fits right in Black Sigil. There we go. Black Sigil every time. Thanks for reminding me. And I'll forget it again until this comes up one more time. Hell yeah, forget it again. Sea of Stars.
Starting point is 02:43:32 OK, Etri and Odyssey is coming back for you. Psycho's who want to sit and plot out graph paper. Hey, listen, I had a really fun experience talking about Etri and Odyssey where Me and Paige were watching the director. Yeah, yeah. Oh, cool. And I'm like, oh, yeah, that's great. People love those games.
Starting point is 02:43:53 And someone in the chat was like, Pat, don't you fucking hate Etri and Odyssey to which I responded? Yeah, I fucking do. I hate Etri and Odyssey, but other people really like them a lot. So I got good for them. I got me a fucking pad of Hillroy graph paper and I'm fine with that. Thank you very much. But by all means, feel free to come play it on this game.
Starting point is 02:44:21 Play this game on the paper. Like, dear God, man. I had always heard of never played it, but Persona Q. Oh, that map shit. Like, if you're in, though, people love that. If you're in, like, you're in, you know, people. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah, shit.
Starting point is 02:44:43 No, I super like I can see that it's it's it's just like with, you know, say, like, big love it. Well, just like a dysgaea, like, if you're down with the leveling up in the item world, like you're in your fucking in, they got you covered. Why did I even jump into this sort to begin with? I just picked up a better one. Let's level that shit up. Yeah, or at your energy origins collection.
Starting point is 02:45:14 OK, it does have auto map, though, right? So OK, you you you can turn that on and just destroy the the the core of that series and turn it into a charming little RPG. Um, first, Etrian, Odyssey, and then Strange Journey. No, that's not come on. Strange. Come on. No, no one's going to play Strange Journey ever again. That game is too hard.
Starting point is 02:45:52 That game is way too hard. That's what it like. That was one of the most punishing fucking starts to a DS game I ever fucking it's too hard. Well, I've got I've got a remedy for you then. Yeah, it's called Kirby's Return to Dreamland deluxe. That's too easy. It's great.
Starting point is 02:46:14 It's my just where is your just right? Yeah. So they have a Magalore's Epilogue. So, I mean, this is curious. So there's new content coming to that besides the return of Samurai Kirby. Magalore's Epilogue is I'm I'm real curious to know what that fucker gets up to post game. I wonder what they're going to do there because I have my suspicions,
Starting point is 02:46:41 but this feels like it's probably just an excuse to play through a bunch of levels with a different character and a different mechanic. Exactly what it is. Yeah, but that's what I figured. If there is like a beginning and an ending cutscene that kind of imply something cool that I'm going to fucking stare at that shit. I'm a I'm a squint one eye and Lewis Black that up and down. I know exactly what you mean.
Starting point is 02:47:11 I'm upset. Magalore, you son of a bitch. What are you up to? You are a total freak for this Kirby lore shit. You are a crazy man. Well, it's a crazy man. It's a lot of fun. What else is fun?
Starting point is 02:47:38 How about? Something fun. Here's to the kingdom. Oh, yeah, Zelda, huh? It's been a minute since like some Zelda. So I kind of thought when they announced Breath of the Wild 2 that it would have happened faster, surprisingly, taking it's taking it's taking it's taking a second. But it looks like it's more looks like you're going to get some arm powers.
Starting point is 02:48:13 I'm curious how the voice acting is going to play out at length. So. Did you did you read up any interviews on like why tears of the kingdom came around? No. So it was so we were watching it and Page was like, it looks like DLC. It's like that's because it is DLC. Oh, this is a silk song. It is a DLC that got way, way out of hand.
Starting point is 02:48:44 And then they're like, well, fuck it then. We'll just fucking make a whole fucking game. It's a silk song. OK, OK. Well, we'll make a whole fucking game. I I I I hope they fuck with the formula enough to. Well, I mean, we see some banjo interesting nuts and bolts shit. So yeah, we're going to be writing on the lawn more building cars and shit.
Starting point is 02:49:17 Sure. Oh, was Mario Galaxy 2 as well supposed to be some DLC? It was Mario Galaxy 2 was supposed to be like fucking what do you call it? Just a bunch of Yoshi Yoshi Yoshi levels. OK, interesting. I didn't know that I got way out of hand. Yeah, so then we got to see
Starting point is 02:49:45 some by 10 Kaito's one and two HD remastered coming out this year. Never, never, never touched them. But I always saw them as them card RPGs. Professor Layton is coming back. He's walking goodness. And then he turned around for us or Layton. There he is. He's got the hat in the face.
Starting point is 02:50:09 Look at him. He's got the hat in the face. You did it. You're right, Wally. He does have his hat and his own face. I got to say, though, it is interesting how like that era of like handheld of like DS early and mid generation kind of brought us.
Starting point is 02:50:35 Well, no, I guess starting with GBA, too, because I'm like he got like a bunch of different like handheld detectives, you know, you got Phoenix Wright and Ghost Trick and Layton, you know, and like there's a bunch of characters that kind of just like emerged from that era that like are specifically handheld detectives. Yeah. I know exactly what you mean. It's it's because like all of that dates back to the one Japanese study, which says doing simple arithmetic problems and crossword puzzles every day can
Starting point is 02:51:13 help stave off senility, which was later debunked. Oh, no. I did all that brain training for nothing. So brain training happened and then that exploded and then A's attorney got ported and that exploded this era of handheld detectives and puzzles. Well, I'm still doing my wordle. Don't you'll die anyway. Well, before I do, I can always sit and relive my summer memories.
Starting point is 02:51:49 My my my my Natsukashi Natsu, you know, by running around. Remember when you were a kid and you ran around and the cicadas were making loud noises? Remember when and then you got to go to the to the fireworks festival? I do. And you put on your Yukata and then like you sure did, man. And then you walked with your your crush. The boys wouldn't like me.
Starting point is 02:52:18 And then you got one of those little dangos and you fucking ate it. And then you got the wind chime spinning paper thing. I did all of those memories. You can get them again. And that back, you get them back in Natsumon, 20th century summer vacation. Just it's literally a game that's about like a kid on Japanese summer break having a summer break.
Starting point is 02:52:43 That's it. That's the game. Why not? I like that. You have one month of just fucking running around, catching frogs, kicking dirt, watching fireworks, eating candy. Yeah, absolutely did a video. But a new one just dropped as in apparently everyone's just screaming at me.
Starting point is 02:53:13 Tim Rogers. Oh, yeah, there you go. There you go. Cool. I don't see a Tim Rogers video that's new. I still got trolled just now like months ago. I got it. I got it. I got I got some out of I got somewhere into the Tokimeki Memorial, but I didn't finish it.
Starting point is 02:53:34 I got to got to continue that exact name of the summer vacation game you're talking about Natsumon Natsumon. Because Tim Rogers did do a video of Boku. No, Natsu, Natsu Yasumi. I don't know if that's the same game. It appears to have a child. No, that's last of us footage, Tim. It's a child on what appears to be Christmas vacation.
Starting point is 02:54:04 Sorry, summer vacation. I can only talk about what was on the Nintendo Direct announcements. Natsumon. It's this. No, not not by the same director. Same same director. Different game. Some people say same game. There is a confusion.
Starting point is 02:54:25 Did Tim Rogers know? Those who say it is the same fight those who say that it is not and whoever survives will be correct. All of you have arguments now. Anyways, summer memory game. Yay. And then yeah, yeah. And then just make it like fully VR and then just make it fully immersive and then
Starting point is 02:54:51 like have it so that you can just zone out of your current life and then just go back to childhood summer and then just completely give up. Oh, can I just die in this fucking chair going back to like one nice summer? One nice summer. That's it. Didn't have to give a fucking shit about fuck. I have bills to pay and shit. No, you know what you gave a shit about?
Starting point is 02:55:16 The tire on your fucking bike popped and you have to pull the tube out. Oh, dude. And then you have to learn how to flip the bike upside down and balance it on the seat and handlebars and then do the do the squeezy thing. I had I had the different problem where I had a like a tiny puncture in my bike wheel, but it wasn't enough to actually cause a problem, but it was definitely enough that I had to re pump it every time I had to go out. And I go out and it'd be fine and I come back and it'd still be fine.
Starting point is 02:55:44 Yep. But then the next time I went to go ride my bike. Oh, tire's flat a little bit again. I got so I had like one of those little bike pumps just strapped to the chassis. What you could do is like get some pull the tube out and tape up the part that really needed some good duct tape, you know, patch it up. I didn't know shit because I was a stupid child. And then you get really good at every time your chain comes off like re-chaining that
Starting point is 02:56:14 shit super quickly. Oh, yeah, I got super good at re got amazing at re-chaining. Just fucking popped back up what the fuck we were doing or a bike to the chains would just fly off every two seconds. Jumping off a stupid shit, jumping off a stupid shit. Of course, am I? Hey, hey, how long did you ride around on your bike with no hands? Oh my God.
Starting point is 02:56:36 I rode, I rode with no hands to football practice in my equipment. Nice. With my number, I spent like a summer going hike. Let's see if I can just do the whole town. Like just do all the stuff I want to do with no hands. Absolutely. Totally can absolutely 100, especially if your if your turn is tight, right? Because you can get it's easier if you're if your handlebars start to get loose,
Starting point is 02:57:02 then you fall and you can impale yourself and that sucks. But if your turn is tight and you're riding right past that cute girl's place, you best fucking ride no hands every time on the way to church. There you can go down the was that the move you go down. So there's the short way and then there's the midway and then there's the long way. But the long way goes past cute girls house. So you fucking bike the long way and you you bet your ass you're going no hands every time, you know, I'm thinking back every time there was one thing that I did
Starting point is 02:57:34 that I'm like, huh, that could have ended in tragic child death. There was like a really tall like, you know, there was a part of the neighborhood that I lived in had like one part that was like way higher. It was like, you know, it was one of those steep slopes all the way up top. And it was like a straight line for like a full kilometer and it was like a 30 degree incline like the whole way. And you go fucking fast as shit if you just fucking let it rock. But every single intersection and there were like six intersections were all
Starting point is 02:58:07 like four way stops that no one paid attention to. And so you just go up there and you'd be like, I wonder how fucking fast I can go if I fucking got it straight down this and you're going through like six signs. And you're so fast at the bottom that you're like barely able to slow down at all without crashing and it's like, man, all somebody would have had to do is like run one stop sign. Well, so that would have been the end. Every time you do it, you roll that red check and, you know,
Starting point is 02:58:42 I had mine where quite simply rounded a corner, flew off of it. And I got to enjoy the sensation of becoming a human tobogganon on the gravel. Yeah, that's my entire ribs just fucking pinked, pinked up, flesh right off. The bleeding coming out of like, yeah, just right down to the fucking meat. And oh, oh, to the meat, to the meat, to the meat, to the meat. Because when they it's not supposed to go out of the meat when they when they put the the the like gauze on it and we're covering it up because it was just it was so sensitive, it was like the fucking it was starting to like grow out with
Starting point is 02:59:28 like the pus and shit because it was like way too many layers gone. Yeah, yeah, yeah, man, all the way. Like I got a really bad fucking rip. And I was like, OK, don't do that. Don't try that shit. Don't round the corner at full speed. You know, it's rough, but I have to beat my cousin because he was fucking when technically I did not.
Starting point is 02:59:53 I suppose I lost the race. There you go. See, that's the problem, right? Yeah, but you know what? Fail to complete is not a win. But that didn't that I was nowhere near a cute girl's house when that happens. Yeah. So mission accomplished, she didn't see it. You know what?
Starting point is 03:00:08 I just I'm like, what's the only time I ever fell off my bike and like because I fell off my bike a bunch, but I never really got scuffed up. The only two times I can remember is I was waiting to cross like a red light intersection and a teenage girl pulled out of the fucking driving instructor's parking lot and knocked me over. Whoa, on on her driving test. At driving pull out speeds like bump just like slowly coming out of the parking lot, hit me on the side just enough to tip me over because I wasn't paying attention.
Starting point is 03:00:48 Oh, shit. OK. And I get up and she's screaming and the instructor is screaming. And and I'm I'm completely fine. Yeah, yeah, over. But I'm but I was like stationary on the sidewalk waiting to pass the light. And and I'm like I'm like their anxiety is so high that despite I'm being fine, I'm like, don't know what to do. Yeah. Oh, I'm fine.
Starting point is 03:01:16 I'm fine. And then I got on my bike and ran away because somehow I was like, I know I'm in trouble. Time for her to just that's when you get out of the car and just walk to the bus stop, just it just get out and hit the bus stop, pull out your pass. It's done. But the other one was I was kind of close to my house and like I took a I just turned, you know, on gravel, if you're biking on gravel, sometimes. Oh, yeah. Traction is nothing.
Starting point is 03:01:44 It just decides to tell you to go fuck yourself. You have no traction. Absolutely. So so I crash, right? And two bicycle cops roll over and go, hey, are you OK? And I'm fine. And then they look at my bike and go, hey, you don't have the sticker for your registration. Oh, God, damn it. They gave me a ticket.
Starting point is 03:02:07 I didn't even know you had to have these. And they're like, yeah, well, you do. Yeah. I'm like, Jesus Christ, that's that's just fucking that's just being a dick. That's just like, hey, fuck you, fuck this. My legs are like, yeah, yeah, yeah. Ow. Mm hmm. Like fuck off.
Starting point is 03:02:25 Folk, quote, quote, a cop's in the suburbs. Quota to fill like you're there's nothing for you to do. Well, they got there's one thing for them to do, evidently in assholes. I love the part where I remember we pay we had we did our registration and my brother's bike got fucking stolen anyway. Like it's just like, cool, thanks. If we ever happen across it, we'll let you know. But, you know, not like they're going to fucking spray and cover that shit up
Starting point is 03:02:53 anyways, you know, or you know what? Because the cops don't check the actual registration numbers. They would just look at the kid with the stolen bike and go, oh, cool. They got their sticker. That one's good. Yeah. Well, anyways, and that's why Natsumon is a great idea. Yeah.
Starting point is 03:03:16 For exactly these reasons. Yeah. Fantastic concept for a video game. Very good concept. Let's take some letters. Hey, do you want to send in a letter about whatever? Go ahead and send it to Castle Superbeast Mail at gmail.com. That's Castle Superbeast Mail at gmail.com.
Starting point is 03:03:37 All right. Let's take one over here. From Leighton, who says, hey, they're eternal combatants and esteemed watcher Leighton here. Just wanted to let you know about a few unhinged things my dad said over the years that were a manifestation of his most his most advanced technique racism. Oh, boy, dad. Oh, I bet there's some good shit in here.
Starting point is 03:04:08 Black people run faster because they've got the extra muscle in their legs. That was a like wildly believed. Oh, I'll get there. The same muscle makes black folks, folks worse at swimming. The reason being why their bodies are denser and more likely to sink. And white people actually are from another planet. That's an explanation. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, what?
Starting point is 03:04:36 That's an explanation that solves multiple racist or wild beliefs like aliens, i.e. white people building pyramids or white people being superior, more advanced, etc. OK, that escalated extremely, extremely quickly. Yeah, that's a bit of a jump. You've probably heard most of them, but I don't want to go into Discovery Channel, ancient aliens and shit. Yeah, OK. So have you seen advanced racism techniques?
Starting point is 03:05:05 First of all, the fucking you're talking about the Jimmy, the Greek, right? The classic Jimmy, the Greek, a sports announcer back in the day who talked about how the black athletes have the extra thigh muscle, it's high up in the calf, you see, and which fibers, man. And that's why they were and especially when the black buck was bred with the with the female slaves and they created the genetically superior athlete. It's all about that extra muscle.
Starting point is 03:05:40 And that was the end of Jimmy, the Greek's career, if I remember correctly, even back then, somehow, that just like extra even even million outwards, even back then. And yeah, that's a fucking gym teacher told me that. OK, OK, so here's the thing. And for anyone who's like, wait a minute, I thought I heard about and is like, yeah, or anyone that hits with the um, actually, right? There is a thing that's called ACT and three
Starting point is 03:06:14 that exists and in anyone who is a high performing athlete, a lot of people tend to that are like explosive sport athletes in particular have this thing and it's athletes are genetic freaks. That's a known quantity. Super athletes of all races have this and you can helps has some kind of muscle disease that makes him a superhuman. And you can measure that in in in all groups and see like who has it and in what amounts and whatnot.
Starting point is 03:06:46 And there's like a whole thing where they're like, oh, if you look at like super athletes, like 80 percent of like white super athletes have it and like 90 percent of black super athletes have it or something to that effect. But it's like literally across the fucking globe. That is a just a thing. So if anyone is pulling that gym teacher shit, you got that. But there are no extra thigh muscles running up the fucking the leg, allowing for hyperbionic jumps and shit.
Starting point is 03:07:17 Have an extra whole muscle is it next to your IT band or what? The Kenyan muscle. Yes. Oh, yeah. Clearly. Oh, Jesus Christ. You know, was your gym teacher Calvin Kandy was? Yeah. All right. Anyways. Um, I hope your dad is OK, but it doesn't sound like he is. OK, let's take one over here.
Starting point is 03:07:49 White people are from space. What? Where is that a Mormon thing? That is a Mormon thing. I mean, it is if it if you really need a distinguishing factor and you can't find any in the evidence you're looking at, you got to take some leaps and then just follow them up, right? Sometimes you just sometimes you you leap and then you look afterwards. Ready, fire, aim.
Starting point is 03:08:26 Here's one coming in from WBSB network. How you doing? Says. Dear Dread Head and Bald Head. I thought. Yeah, I thought this thought had sparked when Willie mentioned the high fire rush mission select in the last episode.
Starting point is 03:08:51 Pat mentioned they probably didn't include the feature. So players weren't wasting time to get the inaccessible locked doors that are there for replay. Reminding me of one of my biggest pet peeves is having the content that is there least to the player, but only accessible in New Game Plus. I had always been the kind of person that if I love what a game is doing and I decide I want to dedicate some time to exploring all of its corners, the game should allow me to do that.
Starting point is 03:09:18 When the game says, hey, there's probably some cool stuff back there, but you can't get it till after you beat the game. It annoys me to no end and sometimes leads me to actually not go back to it. Feels like a cheap move on the developer's part. And yeah, this kind of goes on, but summarizes it as artificial replay ability. Similar to how I feel when I see obnoxious achievements like kill 10,000 enemies when you get to the end of the game
Starting point is 03:09:39 and you see your end results and you've killed like 500 or less in one play through. Yeah, I'm not going to replay the game 10 times, plus just for that one lousy achievement. So, you know, agree or disagree. I have different that's that's the thoughts. The high five rush stuff is excellent. There's tons and tons and tons of new stuff. So replay. I think I think what for me.
Starting point is 03:10:05 It's it depends on what kind of content is behind the new game. Plus, if it's something that's as simple as like, like a, you know, an Alphime Challenger or something to that effect, you know, then it's like, well, that could be done in the middle of it. I don't I don't see why not. If it's something that is like implemented in a like in a substantial way that like adds value to like the progression.
Starting point is 03:10:34 So, for example, classic Yoko Taro new game pluses, you know, original near one of the fucking standout like examples of a fantastic new game plus, right, that is going above and beyond the expectations. And I absolutely adore that that style of extra content. Furthermore, if you go for it in a like intended full narrative context, you also go with the 999, you know, I believe the Uchikoshi style or whatever. So like the the the subsequent
Starting point is 03:11:08 playthroughs are more than just subsequent playthroughs, right? But those are the best possible versions of that. If it's stuff that is kind of more just sort of like loose and challenge, then I'd rather be able to experience it right away if the challenges are at the same time kind of meant to be like combine all your end game skills and put them to the test here. You know, then then I guess that's more of an expected like, OK,
Starting point is 03:11:39 you're coming back with a completely different kit or so on. But yeah, in general, I prefer as well the ability to, you know, well, that's how this conversation came out is like I prefer the ability to hit a level select at the end. Like Gated off content doesn't bug me as much in this context as not being able to just replay the level period. You know, so Dead Space is an excellent, excellent case study of the remake, specifically, of how to do extra New Game Plus content and challenge content
Starting point is 03:12:14 because there's Dead Space on New Game. Then there's Dead Space on New Game Plus, which I've been messing with, which adds a new a new tier of enemy, which is like five times more durable than everything else and also adds conditions for a secret ending. So it really generally like really amps up your new new Game Plus playthrough. It also has if you beat the game, you unlock impossible mode and impossible is you have to only have one save file.
Starting point is 03:12:49 And if you die, you just lose and it's even harder. But upon beating that, you get a foam finger super weapon and the burnished suit, which is like a red visor like silver suit. And impossible like the New Game Plus stuff is great just for replay because you just keep it rolling and impossible mode is there as the game's like ultimate challenge and kind of Iron Man mode. And the argument for unlocking the super weapon after doing the hardest thing in the game is, well, what do I even need that for?
Starting point is 03:13:24 Because I already beat the hardest thing in the game. And like the answer is nothing because you've already proved that you can beat the game on its hardest terms. There's nothing left for you other than a toy to play with. Real megabuster, a really fun to play with. Like hundreds, whatever, many stupid thousand zombies later, you get a real megabuster. Yeah, right.
Starting point is 03:13:51 Yeah, I think at the same time, I'm kind of reminded of like it depends on the genre. Like my expectations of replay are not going to be there for, you know, way more traditional linear sort of games. But when you do something cool, like, for example, bonfire, ascetic, right? That's awesome. Because I was like, I wouldn't expect an ability to go refight a boss
Starting point is 03:14:18 while rep while going through a souls game. But the fact that you can do it in a way that like increases the challenge and lets you get another item out of it. Like that stuff, that's a really cool item, right? Didn't have to exist. And I wouldn't feel like I was missing out on the ability to go refight that boss otherwise, but it's nice that it's there as, you know, or like the memories of the bosses in Sekiro, you know, and things like that.
Starting point is 03:14:45 It's like, oh, well, I appreciate that. That's a that's a dope little thing to just give the player a little bit more, you know, lateral experience on their on their run through the game. So yeah, I just I just don't see it as a downside to give the game the player more play, you know, I think I think the ultimate example of really fucking awful unlockables and new game plus shit is dead rising because the megabuster, like you can never get it in the normal span of play. Right.
Starting point is 03:15:16 And doing so makes the game ruinously awful. Like to get zombie genocide, you have to just mow them down for like hours and hours. Get it, get it, get a sucks, get a rubber band for your controller. Yeah, it's terrible and plug it in. Um, damn awful. Yeah. And then the other thing, of course, is like when you do see someone on New Game
Starting point is 03:15:41 Plus, not only do I want to see that awesome, like Yoko Tower style, good reasons to go back through the game, I want to see the wildest fucking weapons and cosmetic shit going on too, as well. You know, like it should be a wacky joy ride, for sure. Uh, OK, let's take one more over here. Um, right, no name given, but hey, banana and apple. When talking about Grand Blue Fantasy Relink, Pat asked the question,
Starting point is 03:16:14 who is Grand and who is blue? To which Willie informed Pat of who Grand was. But that reminded me of why Grand, the male protagonist, is named as such. But Djita, the female protagonist, isn't. To sum it up, her name is the last two syllables of the Japanese pronunciation of fantasy put backwards, fantasy. Did you touch the shit on Gita?
Starting point is 03:16:49 Grand Grand Blue Fantasy Gita fan. Fuck all your shit off. This is stupid. Fuck it. I hate it. I can't believe like this makes Altria sound like the sanest shit in the world. Oh, yeah, no.
Starting point is 03:17:12 Fucking worse. Oh, my God, man. Is that really why her name is Gita? That's insane. That's why. Sure, sure. Grand and Tassie. Oh, dear God.
Starting point is 03:17:40 Like, you know, if it was pronounced pronounced correctly, it would be, well, it would be Cita. Yeah, they have to be stopped. Fantasy Cita and pun shit. Fantasy. I hate it. Oh, god damn it, dude. Yeah, fantastic.
Starting point is 03:17:59 OK, well, why Grand is portrayed as a starter and Gita as an end game player? Oh, because she's at the end of the sentence. She's at the end of the sentence. Oh, wonderful. Boo urns, man. Yeah, in the who's Fanta? Yeah, in the meantime, high fire rush. So I saw it in the move, but I didn't realize apparently the name of the game
Starting point is 03:18:28 was Project Hibiki. Beforehand, because Hibiki is the best move in the game. And not just that, Kamen Rider Hibiki is the is the fucking guitar playing one. Well, yeah, because Hibiki means like rhythm or beat or something like that. That is so sick. That is such like I saw that and I was like, oh, they're doing they're doing it.
Starting point is 03:18:52 That's so good. So, yeah, fun on that when the names are hot, the names are hot. Otherwise, Gita and Altria. I didn't question Gita at all until now that I heard this, it's it's fucking ruined. Like, I was just like, oh, that's just a fantasy name. But it turns out it's way more of a fantasy name than you think. Yeah, it's just a fucking stupid awful thing.
Starting point is 03:19:21 It's a Fanta G name. All right. All right. OK. I resent Gita now, though she seems cool, but still. Oh, yeah. Yeah, time to in letters. It sure is.
Starting point is 03:19:36 Try a time to create a character named Stoby. And Stoby is, of course, the ending syllables of Kassuru Super Bisto. Fucking go to hell. Go to hell right now. Fair.
