You're listening to the Jeff Fisher Show.
Fear the Walking Dead episode 14 and 15 season premiere.
Or actually, it's not the premiere.
It's not the premiere. It's a season finale.
If it was the premiere, it wouldn't be as good as it really was, would it?
I mean, I know that.
It would have given us hope.
Yes.
Had this been the season premiere?
Oh, I'd be stoked.
It absolutely would have given us hope.
Instead, it gave us unhope.
Joining me on Fear of the Walking Dead podcast, Brad Staggs and Jason Butchrell,
and of course, since we don't have an actual Fear of the Walking Dead open,
and, you know, I mean, we're really here for the real show and not this one.
We might as well have some kind of music that starts the show.
It just makes me yearn for the good old days to come.
All right.
Go ahead on hope
Well I gotta say
First of all
Best Kill Ever
Oh man I was tweeting that
When you tweeted that I thought oh what could it be
And then as I was watching it this morning
Best
Best kill ever
I think in actually any other zombie movie that I can think of
This was more hardcore
What we're talking about of course is the Nick
You know poke of your eyes out
out.
His new nickname is Thumbs.
Right, too.
Thumbs to the face, man.
While he's doing that, I just...
And it drug out.
I mean, it took what?
It took at least 15 seconds for him to work his thumbs in there.
I think that's what made it even so cool, as it took a while.
I was like, oh, that's cool!
Goo was gushing out as he's pushing in the...
I think you forget some of the kills that Rick has had in the past.
Do you think...
Can you think of one that was as good as that?
Yeah, the neck...
The neck bite kill?
when Rick was tied up in the car with him and Daryl
and he bit the guy's neck off his throat off
Oh, with Carl
Yeah, the guy that, yes
So that was not a zombie kill though
No, that's true
This was the best zombie kill.
Now, okay, we're going to get technical
Well, you didn't say a zombie kill, did you?
You said best kill ever.
That's true, that's the best zombie kill ever.
Yeah, oh my gosh, that was just good.
Yeah.
I got gentlemen, I liked this, I liked both of these
I enjoyed them.
Lots of action going on.
Yeah, where were these episodes 10 episodes ago?
And first, I'm going to get back to this zombie kill too,
because Daryl has actually had an eye poke kill as well.
With his thumb?
Yeah.
What?
Yeah, in the city.
When they were, he was fighting the dead guys, the burned guys.
Wow, I do not remember that.
No, either.
Was it a dual thumb on both eyes, zombie kill?
I think this may just be a case where we were so down.
And it was like, oh, man, oh, look, he did it.
It got me going.
They finally put some action in.
My guy was the best ever.
That may have been what it was.
I was interested, though, when, so they, I thought it was strange that they, I thought
they were just going to have a two hour long single episode, but they split it up and even
name them different things.
I think that's for syndication.
Really?
Yep.
I bet you it is.
It has something to do for syndication.
You have to have so many episodes to syndicate, and that's why wait for the one.
Well, so the first one, Wrath, that was kind of obvious,
that some crazy crap was going to go on from all the different groups.
But then the second episode was labeled North, which I think is interesting because now,
I mean, it appears that they're going to just completely get them out of Mexico and go back to the United States.
It's cheaper to produce.
Yeah.
So watch.
They'll show up in, like, Louisiana or something like that, where they have this.
tax credits, that's where they'll end up guaranteed.
Or New Mexico.
Which is, yeah, or New Mexico.
Actually, if they put them in Louisiana, you're getting dangerously close to Rick and the
gang.
Yes, you are.
So I hope they don't do that.
Unless, of course.
Unless they link them.
Right.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Well, remember, our first thought was that they were going to link them through Chris,
and that's not going to happen now.
Nope.
Yeah, I never thought that because basically I just wanted Chris to die, which, yeah, we got.
He did.
Which I have to say, is that as far as they could have taken the character?
No.
Which is weird, I think, to me.
They killed him off, and they hadn't really done all they could do with him.
And it should tell them something that, especially on social media,
when What's Her Face was found by the guy in the desert at the wall,
social media was on fire thinking that that was going to be her dad, Daniel.
Other people were too?
I mean
I mean that should tell them that maybe
you shouldn't have gotten rid of the character
Yeah
Well
What do they expect? I mean there was mystery
surrounding the fact that when he died
Like you never actually saw him die
So like they wanted to prove a point with
Like I think they did that on purpose
They didn't show his death
Because they wanted the opportunity to bring him back
They actually showed Chris's death
Yeah they did
So I don't think there's any controversy there
I think he's dead
In my opinion
Well they show
his death through the narrative of the guys who
and they showed his death through the no they actually showed his death through
Travis's mental image of how he died right right so
maybe the guys were lying I don't know no he's dead I yeah I don't think so
because that they didn't get they wouldn't gain anything by no you're right
by saying that he did I mean they knew that they were about to call down the wrath
they knew it was coming yeah and Travis actually grew a set I was very
I got a lot of satisfaction off that beat down.
Yes, me too.
Except the only satisfaction you get from that, he takes it away quick.
He takes it back because he starts feeling bad for himself and getting back to Travis Land again.
Well, he did just beat two guys to death.
Three.
Well, yeah.
But he didn't know he beat the third one.
I was surprised.
He was kind of an accident.
I apologize.
Two and a half.
I was surprised when Madison and the gang were going to actually expel them from the compound.
See, as I was watching, I made a note, Travis should be kicked out by Madison.
Yeah.
By her rule, he should be gone.
Yeah.
Because you cannot have that.
And well, I think that she was actually, she was going to do that and then decided that she would just leave with him.
Yeah.
Because she knew that.
Yeah.
And later when she admitted to him that, you know, she had killed to protect Nick.
Yeah.
So what?
That's what they're doing.
I don't.
Dear fear
Dear fear
I don't know what else to say
That's all I'm saying is dear fear
Yeah
I'm really disappointed
Well it's a family of killers now
As they're driving around in the car
They're a family of killers
You got Madison
You got Travis
You've got
I want to call her Alicia
Is that her name?
Yeah
Yeah
But the actress is Alicia
Yeah
Yeah
And Ophelia
They really stepped out in the limb there
Ophelia
Was a badass at the beginning too
Yeah.
With the hammer.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
That's when the first episode opened with Ophelia.
Yeah.
Her driving up the wall.
Yeah.
I thought that was funny that she was having a hard time getting across,
air quotes, the wall.
Apparently it's hard to get past the wall.
Yeah.
So you find the hole in it.
And then she just breaks down the tears when she finally finds the hole in the wall.
And I first was like, why was it that hard to get over?
You know what I mean?
I don't think it's.
Where was the Border Patrol then?
They were busy taking care of Nick.
Yeah, that's true.
But I was so, like, she's getting shot at.
I was like, oh my God, this is Daniel.
Because we called it.
I remember last podcast.
We said that she was going to get intercepted on her way down there by my father.
And I was like, this is it.
So who was that, dude?
We don't really know, do we?
No, we don't.
He's a big actor, actually.
So the casting, the people do this casting, they always pull from the Sons of Anarchy.
And what was that other?
Oh, Deadwood cast?
Madison's character was off that, a couple of others,
and that character, he was on Sons of Anarchy.
I don't remember the actor's name.
Really?
Yeah, he's a famous actor.
I have to go back and look at that.
I didn't recognize him.
But to me, that means that he's in a lot of stuff.
So I think that he's going to be a major player going forward, which is interesting.
How so, I don't know.
Maybe he's part of this.
He's probably part of the group as a de facto water patrol for the group that ends up ambushing Nick later on.
at the border crossing?
Right.
Maybe.
So is that, okay, so those guys are crazy, they're just, all right, they are protecting the border now.
I guess.
That's kind of what I thought.
Or just getting people as they try to get across.
That's probably what they are.
I don't know if we're jumping ahead of ourselves there, but.
Maybe, maybe not.
I mean, they definitely need some stronger characters, right?
I mean, I read one review I read was without stronger characters, it's doomed.
Fear is doomed.
Yeah.
and they left dude back at the
yeah Victor left
stayed at the hotel
I mean I didn't quite understand that one either
well I did
I mean I understood why he did that
because like right to him
he's like he has no loyalty
why should he have loyalty to them
if they're going to do something stupid
he literally you have and again
we've said this before but they don't know
what they have with this hotel
this is gold Victor realizes that
why would he leave this treasure trove
of you know post-apocalyptic
survival and just take off into the wild unknown.
So do you think Rick, if Rick had been Madison,
or if Madison had been Rick,
you think he would have said,
screw my own rule, we're staying.
Travis was justified in killing him,
and we're staying.
If you guys don't like it, we're going to shoot in the head.
Oh, Rick would have taken control.
Yes, I will say that.
Rick would not have let the control be taken away from him.
Right.
Well, it was funny, is Travis has beaten these two guys to death.
He's in a room of winning.
windows and she yells go get the keys.
Yeah.
How about just get a rock and bust through the glass?
Which is what they eventually did.
Right.
But yeah.
But why, I mean, if you really want to stop him, you kick down the door, you break the glass,
you get in.
This is the end of Times Holocaust we're talking about.
You can't break glass.
Yeah, because you can't replace it, right?
Because you can't call.
Yeah, because how would they replace the door at that point?
Good point.
I hadn't thought about that.
You're right.
And then they, okay.
Here's another thing that I,
we're doing post-apocalyptic brain surgery with the craftsman drill.
Oh, I thought that was crazy.
Come on.
With a disposable, exacto knife.
Come on.
And a hole saw.
Yeah.
And it was turning the bone into mush.
It was, yeah.
And I thought, okay, first of all, those use a pilot tip.
So as soon as he drills in.
He's all the way in.
Yes.
So he effectively killed him.
I was curious on why they were even doing that.
I mean, or why they even showed it.
It was literally it was just for shock value.
It was just the core value.
Because it had no story revocations later.
His brain was swelling and they had to relieve the pressure.
But they didn't even have showed that.
They literally could have said, okay, you kill this guy.
That's when we're kicking you out.
That's it.
But instead, they have this whole operation scene just to take up time and for shock value.
That was it.
It was kind of cool.
It was cool.
It was cool.
I have to give them.
But the whole time I was thinking in my head, I was like, what am I missing from this?
What are they going to find out?
I thought that there was going to be something more involved with that procedure.
Like they were going to figure something out.
You thought that was the moment that there was going to be some brilliant?
Yeah.
But see, but that's what we would expect from Walking Dead.
You know, they'd figure something out.
That'd be a major plot driver.
No.
But nothing.
It was all for nothing.
Just like Chris dying.
Kind of all for nothing.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Yeah.
It was cool.
The bone coming out of his leg was cool.
Yeah, that was.
That was very, I mean, so there was a lot of shock and awe in this.
but not a lot of aha.
No aha.
I always thought that the whole Chris thing was just to kind of show that it just seems like the theme throughout all of the Walking Dead franchise is that throughout this like chaos, some people go full dark and some people do just enough dark to get by.
You know what I mean?
Like they haven't gone full dark but do just enough dark to get by.
Yes.
But they have.
But Chris went full dark.
They have reconciled.
The people that are going dark enough to survive
and not turning completely dark where human life still matters,
they have reconciled the fact that, look, I got to kill.
This is right now in this world, this is the way it is.
So they're not, they're done with, I'm over the Travis thing of,
You know, I'm being a badass and having to kill.
And that's twice now that he's come out of his, you know, Travis' badass shell.
But then he goes back deeper into his feeling sorry for himself.
And this isn't the way the world's supposed to be.
And I'm supposed to be this nice teacher teaching kids how to write ABCs.
Shut up.
Without knowing Spanish in L.A.'s high school.
Thank you.
Yeah.
Right.
I like that but I like that as a story vehicle in this in this overall franchise because like it's like the moment like look at when Rick in the gang when they go full dark bad things happen like remember last season when they I was shocked when they went after the saviors and they were just like killing people in their sleep you know like that whole special that was one of the most badass shows ever yes it was oh my god they were like actually looking like a special forces unit yes they were badass and I don't think I sat down that
entire episode. I was like up dancing around
in my living room watching that thing.
In your underpants? But in my underpants.
But then I was like... You can't dance around in your living room
without just as being in your underpants.
That's right. But then I was thinking,
oh crap, because they did it.
They did what you're not supposed to do in this world,
which is go full dark. Right. Bad
crap is about to start to happen. And it did.
And it did. And it did.
Because the writers wrote it that way.
How excited are you for round
three of fear?
I'm actually kind of looking forward to,
this kind of did it for me.
I will watch the first, if they renew it.
They haven't gotten to renewal yet, have they?
I thought they did with season three already.
Maybe they did.
Well, we're talking.
Look that up because I want to talk a little bit about
what do you think happened with Nick at the border
and the border crossing and the firefight that he got into.
Well, that whole plot line was...
Strange.
Yeah, and then just the fact that, I mean, so we found out, which I predicted on this podcast, that that was probably the boy that bit that dude, whatever his name was, Raphael or whatever his name was.
Yeah, we discussed that on the show, and we also discussed that the fact would be that he got bit from the boy before he turned, before he died of turn.
Right. Which ended up being true.
Correct.
So, yeah, so he ends up getting bit again right after the greatest zombie kill.
until ever.
You knew that, yeah, you knew that was happening.
Right before.
And then, and so, yeah, so that whole thing comes down and they realize they have to leave.
I figured something was odd when Nick saw in the distance when he was trying to leave that helicopter.
The helicopter.
Because there are no governments at this point.
So I assumed that that wasn't like a government force that that was probably something crazy.
Well, at this point, we're still pretty new into the event.
There's still maybe governments.
I'm just assuming there's not
Where are they getting the avgas
To fuel the helicopter
From the avgas store
Yeah
I'm right
You're dumb
Dopey me
Apparently so
By the way
Yeah
Pull your helicopter up and fill it up and go
Exactly
Maybe that's what the helicopter was doing
It was actually landing at the gas station to refill
Thumbs up on season three by the way
They renewed it back in April
Yeah that's what I thought
Yeah
So we will get to find out what happened
Yeah
I've got joy joy joy joy
down in my heart.
Yeah.
What was the song that they were playing
is Nick and is leading the whole gang
through the streets?
It was, um...
Oh, crap.
Yeah.
And you knew that was way too happy a song
that something was going to happen.
I don't remember.
I don't remember.
I don't remember.
I don't remember.
Catchy song.
So catchy, I can't remember.
Anyway.
But anyway, yeah, but as the namesake for this episode,
everyone is now moving north.
So we have, we had Nick
and the Colonia group moving north to the border.
We have Ophelia, who was actually crossed north, and she's caught.
And now we have Madison trying to track Nick down, so they're moving north.
But that, when they get, so they get ambushed, Luciana, which broke my heart when she got shot in the chest.
I think she's dead? I don't think so. I think she's probably fine.
Because they would have showed it otherwise, right?
Maybe.
I think so. I mean, I don't know. She's hot. Don't get rid of her.
Big ears.
Oh, gosh. You're in your ears thing.
Fear, stop it.
But, yeah, so they get ambushed, and yeah, they did not look like a government force to me.
They look like some kind of rag-tag, like mercenary groups, something like that.
And I'm not quite sure I understand what the whole deal is.
Probably Trump supporters.
Yes.
I'm just trying to figure out what they're trying to protect.
They're trying to make America again, obviously.
At the border of other places.
I mean, a crowd of people come up, and you pretty much, I mean, when they're, I don't know,
it just seemed like they, you know, they weren't the crowd of walkers.
No.
It took a moment to see that.
They didn't look very menacing.
I mean, she's carrying a baby.
Yeah.
And, you know, it didn't make much sense for them to jump out and start.
And Nick's got, you know, carrying the bag of oxies and we're good.
So they just wanted to steal their crap, basically.
Yeah.
So, I mean, they're not, I don't think they're government at all.
I think that they're like a, yeah, like a Negan style.
They're jerks.
And they're hella outfitted.
They have helicopters.
They had machine guns.
These guys look legit.
So why not just kill Nick and Luciano right there?
I just end it.
Why are they taking them?
Because they're still on the show.
Oh.
Right.
They're still on the payroll.
I mean, Nick all of a sudden is in charge of this place.
It was just strange how.
But we did find out the truth.
truth about Alejandro.
He was bit by, like you predicted it, he was bit by the kid.
The drug addles.
Have you been listening?
Not in the past five minutes.
I mean, we covered that already.
You guys are boring.
You know what? That's because it's the damn show.
