Season 11, episode 18, the second episode of the final eight, titled A New Deal.
That makes this talking walking dead.
Welcome to it.
Myself Jeff Fisher, Jason Buttrill and Maximus Fisher.
Episode description on IMDB Carroll makes a deal with Pamela to wipe the slate clean on behalf of her friends.
Aaron, Jerry, Lydia, and Elijah, get on the road to Oceanside.
to fill them in on a plan.
And the Commonwealth celebrates Founders Day.
So overall, I will say that I, you know, I enjoyed the episode, but we'll just leave,
that's my review.
I enjoyed the episode, but.
It's interesting.
It doesn't really, I did too.
I had fun watching it.
I, uh, it really wouldn't feel like the final eight episodes if they, because it just feels
like a normal episode to me where they're fighting another big group.
except for the fact where they do that thing at the very beginning,
where it's, I'm assuming maybe Judith,
kind of talking as if she's remembering the last things that happened before,
whatever, you know, before the end, I guess.
Yeah, the recap, that's actually an awesome little thing.
Yeah, and, you know, remembering their voices is how we keep them alive.
Okay.
Showing all the characters and stuff, it's really good.
Also, I know I'm about to jump ahead here, but I'm glad Sebastian's dead.
But that's what I was going to say is like they continue to deviate from the source material.
Yeah.
That was surprising.
That was.
In fact, Max and I were talking last night.
And, you know, I mean, that definitely deviates from the source material, right?
They've deviated in the past, but they still give you a character that's going to take the original source materials place.
And now what do they have?
Yeah, because in.
In Walking Dead, usually whenever there's a character that dies and they replace them with another death or whatever.
Usually the killer stays the same.
Dwight still got his arrow kill.
It just wasn't Abraham in the show.
It was the doctor.
And with Sasha, it wasn't one of the comic girls.
It was Sasha.
But the killer has always stayed the same with Dwight and Negan.
That was the same.
So if they'd try to do Rick's death with, say, my guess would be.
now would be Ezekiel
who would kill him because
it's definitely not going to be Sebastian
Unless it's like the CIA
guys, you know, from
what's his name? Yeah, Lance's
CIA guys, the
guy and the girl.
Yeah, and I did love the beginning and we can
we'll we can back up
in a little bit because I did like the very beginning as we
started from the end of last week where we had
Lance being held captive
by Daryl and our group.
And, you know, then Pamela shows up with Mercer and Carol.
And I love the, the, Daryl's like, what have you done?
What have you done?
What he sees Carol?
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I will say that again with when Daryl stabs him in the hand, which was awesome,
because he gives in to not kill him, but then stabs him in the hand and pulls it,
don't worry, he'll live.
Yeah.
The stabbing of the hand, again, we get the tease of our original Negan.
Yeah.
With the smile.
Just gives a smile.
Yeah.
With the Negan smirk of like, that's my boy.
That's what I'm talking about.
I couldn't tell when he said, don't worry, they'll live.
If he'll live, if they were just doing kind of like an Easter egg, the Terminator 2.
It just seemed like it was exactly the same situation.
Honestly, I wouldn't surprise me.
Right.
It was, which I'm perfectly fine with.
It was either that or they stole from it.
Either way, I don't care.
Because it was awesome.
But yeah, like the, it's funny.
Sometimes you can read the minds of some of these characters.
And when they flashed in Egan and he gave that smirk.
It was almost like he was thinking, see what I had to deal with, mother efforts.
Yeah.
I know.
He's like, right?
And then they ruin it again where he's sitting in with the, with the wife and the baby doctor.
I disagree with him.
He wants to be dad.
They want to wuss him out again.
Agreed.
No, I agree.
With them ruining it.
Oh, come on.
It was like they give us the,
this is Negan, and this is what you've been wanting.
And then I really wanted to be a dad.
Yeah.
I didn't understand what my dad meant when he talked about life changes.
Shut up.
Shut up.
Shut up.
We got it.
That's not you, bro.
Stop it.
Yeah, I agree.
It's like they were trying to, like, create this, like, conflict.
It wasn't just him.
It was like everyone, you know, with Judith, you know, like not taking the gun, wanted to go play with their friends, you know, like it was group wide, I guess.
Yeah, I guess that's true.
Where they all have and they all are struggling, right?
It makes sense.
Some want to stay at Commonwealth because they do kind of like the new world that's been laid out for them after all the fighting.
And, you know, the others are like, no, screw that.
We got to go back with our, you know, just be with our people.
So it's a clear tease that you're not going to have to live without this for long, right?
Like the goal is to fix the current situation in the Commonwealth,
so everyone can be happy there, I guess.
Right.
Yeah.
Right.
I did like the, and then we had, you know, the deal with Pamela and Lance and Lance begging
and saying, you know, you're not going to, you know, I'm still needed and I'm worth what you need.
You don't understand what I've built behind.
behind your back with you, you know, pretending to not know, but you knew what I was doing.
So then when Eugene and Stephanie, Stephanie is still trying to, Eugene's still trying to take
care of a little business.
You know, I want to leave, but I don't want to leave without taking care of a little business.
Her name's Max too, by the way.
Yeah, whatever.
Don't bog me down with facts. That's Stephanie.
And so then, but Lance tells,
uh, tells Eugene when they go to see him, you know,
uh, you know, he knows about the, he knows about the,
the girlfriend, you know, knows about her, right?
He knows that she's been working behind the scenes for that.
Uh, and he says, you know, the only way to do it is to just burn it all down,
which is what his has in the works already.
Which is, I thought was pretty interesting because he's got the, you know, his CIA people
killing the workers, no headshots.
You knew they were going to turn into walkers.
That's what they wanted.
Yeah, I thought that was interesting.
He doesn't seem nervous at all.
You know, his entire captivity.
You know, he wasn't advocating for them to move against what's her name.
It just seems, it shows like he's got a plan, whatever that plan is.
Like, you can tell they're the ones that like, they have multiple contingencies in place in case something happens.
So remember when he was in the first episode, he was like, I don't know, initiate something, something protocol or something like that, which means go after the kids.
Now it's like he's been jailed.
They instantly go into whatever protocol, you know, is out.
That is kind of cool.
Yeah.
I did.
And then I did enjoy the, you know, I know Pamela and Sebastian, you know, douche ended up in the office.
You were born to lead and, you know, feeling all that good.
and he, you know,
it was for the brother.
She really loved him more than me.
Yeah, that,
that's a bastion all right,
that little bastard.
Okay, can we all agree?
We all hated him.
Yeah,
but he was a good character to hate.
Right,
I was really surprised
that he was the one
we decided that we were gonna,
we were gonna knock off last night.
Yeah.
It's really,
I'm not quite sure I'm,
I'm okay with that, but I guess, I mean, well, I have to be because that's what they did.
But it's kind of strange that he was the one that they decided that he was the big one that was going to go down.
And they clearly want us guessing about what the ending is going to be.
What's going to happen?
Yeah, exactly.
Like, it's going to be something radically different than what the comics were, which I don't.
That could be good.
It could be.
Let's be honest.
It could be.
Well, I mean, it's got to be, right?
Because all the characters that were involved are just not there anymore.
So, I mean, they have to do something.
different. And I also found it was interesting. Another one was comments to circle back to,
what's his name? Uh, head of the CIA guys. What's his name? Lance. Uh, that he said you,
he was talking to the, to the chicken charge. And he was like, you need me for like multiple
reasons. And he seemed like he was hinting at relationships outside the Commonwealth. Right. He
absolutely was. So that's got to be. Well, you know about what.
One of them, remember, the medicinal, like, drug dealers that he had to deal with, remember?
Yeah, but this, but I, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that you're leaning toward, you know, the CIA to Rick.
It's got, to me, it's got to be, because it sounded existential.
Maybe I'm not sure.
Not just like random communities in the forest, you know, this sounded like a little bit more.
Right.
There's, if things start to go crazy, then we're going to need, you know, the, the, their military is coming in.
Right.
And that's where we get Rick, which would be awesome,
instead of just the flashbacks at the beginning.
So cool.
I can't wait until we get to the preview for the next show,
because that was ridiculously interesting to me.
Oh, yeah.
The variance?
Oh, yes.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And that shocks me that they're going in that direction.
It's cool, but it shocks me.
I know.
I know.
It seems, you know, you know, you heard,
I guess in the tease, right, Aaron says that he's heard about
Walker's opening doors and climbing on.
I think Jerry might have said that or Aaron either way,
but in the clip that they showed on the show that comes on after Vampire,
yeah, that Aaron said that he thought it was whispers,
which makes sense.
Yeah, that would have been my first thought if I were them,
that we were back to the whispers
because they just got done dealing with them
at least in the near past
before Commonwealth
so I mean those were the
those were the walkers that were
opening doors and climbing walls
but they're I mean
I don't know it almost seems like they're using
this they definitely are
well they want to wrap there's two reasons
for this final season
one is to wrap up the Walking Dead
it's had a great run and they need to end it
but the second is
to set up their expanded universe
shows. 100%.
So that thing clearly
points to whatever
Darrell is going to be doing
over in Paris.
Yes.
Right into world beyond.
And whatever
is being worked on with
CRM and Rick.
Right.
Those are, you know, test subjects left out or whatever
that maybe Lance knows about.
Which would be
good. Which the core audience,
the core audience has been there
since the beginning. That's what we're more interested
in. I mean, I'm interested in both,
but I'm more interested in getting
some closure or some update on
the main character. I mean,
the main character has just
been silent and gone
for multiple seasons, which is...
Mainly for Andrew Lincoln, let's be honest here.
Yeah, I'm not assigning blame anywhere.
It's just for plot reasons and for
payoff from the audience. You
got to pay this off.
Absolutely.
I agree.
I completely agree.
Oh, man.
The recap of looking back at the past is not enough.
Sorry.
No.
It's not enough.
And having them mention him when Darrell is struggling about raising Judith and, you know, the mention of him.
Okay, so what?
Okay.
A big deal.
We're still, we're mentioning him in the dialogue.
So it doesn't mean anything to the audience.
I mean, he's got, the payoff has to happen.
Yeah.
I think now that they've announced his show and Michone show, it's almost seems like a given now that he's going to make some kind of cameo.
He's got to.
And that's, and that goes back to Lance, you know, laying the groundwork with Pamela.
Yeah.
Different protocols are now in place because you've, you know, you're coming against me.
Yeah.
And I've got deals going on.
I did enjoy the, you know, the Commonwealth Founders Day party.
Yeah, the wrestling.
That was fun.
We have the fair going on and everybody's struggling with staying there.
And the king is going to stay and run his little petting zoo.
And, you know, what's his face?
The preacher man struggling because he likes to, he's back.
He's found God again and wants to stay in the.
church and he believes
that that's where you know that's where god is
directing him to be
you know they're all struggling with that
and I'm sorry go ahead
the wrestling match was
it was so surreal and watching it
I almost I was like am I watching the Walking Dead
right now point of the commonwealth
that is the whole point of the Commonwealth
that was like it was like that in the comics and it's like that here
the whole point of the Commonwealth is this the Walking Dead
they had wrestling matches
in the comics? Oh yeah, they had a wrestling match.
They said they have concerts.
They have, it's the whole thing.
Like, the whole thing is they have concerts.
They have, they have just normal things in the Commonwealth.
This is the idea of the annual Founders Day wrestling match.
I was like, who made this up?
Robert Kirkman.
That was so silly.
It did remind me, though, because they clearly had the guy that was supposed to be the champion
of the Commonwealth.
And it reminded me as a kid, I remember like when the first Gulf War came out and the WWF or whatever it was back then.
It was like Hulk Hogan at the time would always run into the ring with an American flag.
Absolutely, man.
And like I remember like that WrestleMania that year during the Gulf War was he was fighting against the guy that was the Saddam Hussein like kind of clone.
I can't remember his name.
But that's exactly what it reminded me of.
Yeah.
Don't be don't be smirching the WWF and the East.
Yes, I know you're a big wrestling fan.
Those were good times, man.
I did like, and also, you know, the, you know, some, what's her face?
Stephanie, you know, with the tape of Sebastian and that gets aired and people, you know, find out how he really feels.
And mom's handpicking the lottery winner.
You know, it was after the big wrestling match, right?
And Sebastian is trying to win everybody over.
and then no way that happens
and perfect timing
ah the walkers show up
and we start fighting
so I love and that's when
he chases after her
we did get a little bit
of
how we want Judith to be
right because she turned down
Rick's gun early and we're like
what are you doing actually I love that scene
because you know what
it reminded there was one person
the way she was acting it reminded me of Carl
let's be honest
she completely reminded me of Carl
during that argument with Darrell.
Yeah, no question.
Where Darrell was funny, just stop.
Just stop.
I don't want to hear it anymore.
What was funny to me about that conversation
was like, Judith was like, basically,
why are you leaving?
Like, this is what you guys do.
You go to a new group,
you infiltrate and take it over and save the community.
Like, this is kind of like the standard operating procedure at this point.
She's not wrong.
She's got a point.
This is what you do.
But I did love the,
you know, when the walker showed up and she takes the,
Darrell gives her the gun and just says,
all right, we do it together.
Let's go.
Yeah.
That was awesome.
Oh, yeah.
That felt good.
I'd like to see her wield the samurai sword a little bit more,
but I was very pleased with that.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
Had the Rick gun, we're good to go.
Let's go ahead and kill some walkers.
No problem.
I did, I feel like the, I feel like the walkers,
well, everybody was running.
It was interesting how the walkers were.
you know
not
I don't know
I just anyway
I guess it was okay
in the crowd
I just felt like
they would have not
got so far
into the crowd
because they would have stopped
and
eaten the first people
they came to
so it was kind of
strange that we were getting
you know
we got to Sebastian
with the Walker
I don't know
it was whatever
it's fine
it's fine
it's interesting
how they turn off
or turn down
or turn up
the lethality
of the walkers
like kind of at random
because usually they're just like
bumbling idiots that are no longer scary
right but then all of a sudden here
it could have been just that's how lazy
and complacent this group has become
I think that's what the point is
like if this happens in Alexandria or a hilltop
everyone looks at the walkers kind of shrugs
keeps eating a sandwich throws like a ninja star
and takes like four of them out at one throw
do not let them get over there
by my tomatoes okay
Yeah, like, a bit of a bit of a spoiler, and I'm betting that it's going to actually happen, at least in the ending.
So in the comics, there's a time skip where we see Carl walking around.
I get it.
It's probably going to be Judith this time walking around.
And Herschel, Maggie's son, is walking around with like a circus cart with walkers in it.
He's basically a carny man with walkers, and then Carl gets pissed.
Oh.
That's the whole point.
That would be fun because the king would be pissed at that too.
Right.
You got your petting zoo.
I've got mine.
How old were they?
That would be a fun character.
Herschel was a young adult by that point.
So over 18?
Yeah.
So the biggest question in my mind is how hot does Judith look if they do a time skip that far?
Right?
Yes.
Absolutely.
So, I mean, if we don't, if we, if we.
It's great if we get a Rick cameo,
but if we don't get a hot Judith in a time jump,
I'm going to be pissed.
I mean,
maybe ruins the entire series every,
every season.
I hadn't really thought about that until you said something right now,
but I'm with you 100%.
Okay, really?
100%.
Absolutely.
And in fact,
we should make do an episode on who should be Judith in the time jump.
Really?
Yes.
Yes.
Yeah, absolutely, man.
There's a few characters I can think of,
right now that I want to be Judith in the time.
I apologize, audience. I apologize.
So we have Sebastian Gitt Walker. Now, next week we know that they're on their run, right?
And the episode is called Variant. So we will, you know, learn a little bit more about the variant.
And we know that Eugene is, you know, off on the run. And Mercer, I guess, is going to go try to find him.
and Aaron is off with Jerry and they're killing walkers
and finding the different variants with the crowd
as they go to Oceanside
as they try to work out the new deal.
But now we've got serious discombobulation
in the Commonwealth as well, right?
I mean, it's all going to happen.
Oh, I love that scene when Mercer starts to leave the ring
and Pamela is just like, your job's to protect me
and goes, my job is to protect the Commonwealth,
ma'am yeah well that's his i mean that's his way of distancing himself from badness right
because that really is his job is to protect her but yeah they made it so you know the the soldiers
were there to protect the commonwealth so you know that's his fine line of distancing himself
from the bad stuff that pamela has ordered be done by the way i just say mercer is one of
the best characters in this show yeah like a
yeah I like him a lot
I don't know if I'd go as far as say one of the best characters in the show but
he's a good character
yeah I like him he's definitely going to be
you know he's he's a fan favorite he's gonna be on
he's gonna be with darrell
uh you know he and darrell he likes darrell
so darrell's you know darrell's good with mercer
no matter what because they've pretty much saved each other
and you know they'll be fine
did they in the preview for next seat for variant did they
did they show any dialogue from pamela
I feel like they did. I just don't remember.
No, I don't believe so.
Oh, wait, no, they did.
Some people need to be made an example of.
That's what she said.
Okay.
So she's not completely done, but she's on the verge of it.
Yeah, she's got to be trying to hang on, right?
I mean, someone let the walkers out, so we've got to investigate.
We've killed the walkers, obviously.
There was only, what, a dozen of them, maybe.
Hello, you've got to be able to finish those.
off easy enough.
And so, you know, he's sweeped that up, but you've still got, and we've got Aunt Sebastian's
dead, right?
So the people that they hated, she's able to say that was all BS, and it was all just a lie,
him trying to get back at me.
And so the Commonwealth should be fine still underneath me, get out of my office.
I kind of hope Lance doesn't, I mean, we've got to have total closure as far as the group
and what happens at Commonwealth.
but I kind of hope that Lance doesn't get offed
because he just seems like he'd be a good villain
to like move off into the other shows.
Absolutely.
And he's made, you know, he's made,
if he's, like we talked about,
he's made deals with surrounding communities
and surrounding, you know, hopefully CRM.
And so he's got to be the go-between, right?
He's the guy.
Yeah, that would be a perfect vehicle
to get us a camera, you know, a Rick appearance easily.
Absolutely.
And it would be great.
to have Rick show up and to deal with Lance because Lance is set up the deal.
And then all of a sudden, you know, there's Daryl looking at Rick and Rick looking at Daryl.
And that just, I mean, Lance could just go suck wind somewhere now.
That would make sense.
Also, it's just, it'd be interesting because then we'd be like, okay, Rick, what have you been doing this all time?
Because we know from World Beyond that, uh, Jay.
She was there. She talked about she gave Rick to them. But we also know that the civic republic, their main point of government, does not know what their military is completely up to. We know that.
So I'm curious what if we're going to ever figure out, like, will the republic, their lead government and their main society figure out what their military is up to?
Well, maybe that's, I mean, Lance is dealing with the military, right?
And Pamela is dealing with the government.
So, you know, that's where we'll get the two budding heads and where Rick comes in to be a common ground for both of them.
Because he now, he knows all of our people.
And he's part of the military that Lance has set up.
And Pamela has already screwed things up enough to where their government is going to say, well, we need something new.
It's cool, man.
It's exciting.
There's a lot of stuff to look forward to.
You know, I mean, we got a big closure with the main group.
We got possible rec sightings.
We got new variants of walkers setting up new shows.
There's a lot of stuff to look forward to it.
I can't say that in a while.
Six more episodes.
That hurts.
Crazy.
Six episodes left.
Before we end, Jason, did you watch any, did you watch Den the Water and the two episodes of
Tales?
Oh, God.
I watched tons of those things.
I watched all of all that.
All right, well, then we'll talk about it at another time.
We just asked you to watch three things.
All right, well, thank you for listening to Talking Walking Dead.
Jason Butro, Maximus Fisher.
We'll be here myself, Jeff Fisher.
We'll be back next week for episode three of the final eight on Talking Walking Dead.
