Season two, episode one, the Walking Dead universe.
Daryl, the Book of Carol.
Show description, Daryl's journey across a broken but resilient France
as he hopes to find a new way back home.
This episode titled La Gentilis Estrangers.
I mean, in real language, that means gentleness of strangers.
Episode description on IMDB, Carol maps a path toward Daryl,
Daryl, Isabel, and Laurent define their roles at the nest.
This is Talking Mocking Dead.
Welcome to it.
Myself, Jason Butchell, Maximus Fisher, the new season, season two of Daryl.
This, the book of Carol, has begun.
And, you know, the first, I don't know, 10, 15 minutes I'd already seen, they'd already released it.
We saw it at Comic Con.
We saw some of the releases.
So I was like, okay, let's get to it.
And then we had, you know, most of the episode, of course,
while we went to France.
Most of the episode was wrapped around, you know, Carol, figuring out where Darrell was
and how she's going to get to France.
Mr. Butrell, how in the world are you?
Great.
It has been a long time.
It has been a while.
It feels like forever since we've had a Walking Dead show to discuss.
And, you know, I enjoyed it.
I enjoyed it, I must say.
Yeah, I enjoyed it.
Even the, even the, yeah, even the, even the commercials were great.
You know, we got that preview for Dead City, which was looked really dang good.
Yeah, I know.
I know.
That's going to be exciting whenever season two, if Dead City comes out, summer next year?
Yeah, sometime in 2030.
Yeah, I don't know.
Yeah, I, um, so it was, it was enjoyable to be back in the Walking Dead universe.
Yeah.
I kept finding myself being, I don't know, so I guess this first episode had to, they had
have some kind of excuse for why Carol finds out he's in France, which I thought was really weak.
I mean, how many clues can she actually get that he's in France?
But I mean, it was just like, oh, okay, so I was in France.
I figured out to get there.
And then it was just, I knew this was going to happen to me on this show, is that I knew
they were going to have to do flashbacks because you can't just not show Daryl.
Correct.
It was just extremely annoying.
having to catch up with Carol
and then I'm wondering what's going on
with Daryl the entire time.
I know.
We spent all of season one.
We just loving what was happening in France.
Right.
We get just a bone of what's happening in France.
That's, yeah.
So, I mean, yeah, that was just annoying.
And they were, they were, like, teasing little plot hints
that I really wanted to have follow through on.
And then it would go back to Carol.
And I'm like, ah!
Yeah, that only, like, 10 or so minutes were in,
France with Daryl and the rest of it was probably with Carol?
Maybe 10 minutes.
Maybe 10 minutes in France.
And, you know, they were great, a great 10 minutes.
But, yeah, the flashbacks.
And again, we'd seen them, which, you know, I get it.
They released it early and it's still part of the show.
But I just wanted to move on because we've already seen it.
Yeah, yeah, you went to the camp.
You found out he's in France.
You know, we're good.
You figured out, then, you know, you went to the graveyard and these other planes fly over.
Yeah, yeah. Okay, now let's get to that. Let's move on.
Yeah. Her big idea with this airplane, that entire story, which is such a dumpster fire.
I was like, it was hilarious, too, is these people are smart.
There's multiple riders sitting around a table, like, how are we going to do this?
And Homeboy directed it. I mean, it was. I think this was a Nicotero episode.
Yes, it was. It was Nicotero.
Well, and you can see like elements of it.
Like there were some cool, you know, like imagery.
Like when there was one scene where they had like the walkers coming up over.
Yes.
That was a great shot with the voice.
Yes, it was awesome.
Classic Nicotero.
I mean, that was great.
But the story behind it was I was just, what are we doing here?
Like, what is going on?
Like to believe that this guy was, you know, secure all this time.
It's been all this time.
No one.
No one.
But you and your divine.
mystical way. I go back to Johnny Carson
and the fucking Wagnall's port since
noon today. No one has
found this guy. Okay.
And he's flying every day.
He's flying an airplane that no one ever sees.
No one ever sees except
that one day that Carol went to the graveyard.
Oh, hey, there is. And his generator
malfunctions every once in a while so
the door's open.
What? He's so successful.
He's lived this long,
but his door just flings
open every effing day.
What?
Ultimate times a day?
He's never figured out.
Maybe I should put a secondary latch on that gate.
You'd think he would have figured that one out already.
One would think he figured that one out already.
He said he had the balls to like come up to Carol and go, what'd you do?
I was like, what I'm talking about?
It was your front gate that flew open.
What did I do?
You got the crappy generator.
What am I doing here?
Because I walked into the greenhouse of the supposed secure air.
Are you?
Shut up.
Oh my God.
That was a pretty, I know we're skipping forward about it, but that was a pretty good scene
in the greenhouse, but like the scene.
Okay, because of Nicotero, we had some great walker scenes, right?
We had the walkers in the greenhouse and we had the walkers, you know, through the woods,
like you, as you mentioned, and we had the airplane walker scene, which was great.
And we heard an interview with Nicotero and he was talking about, you know, we really had
one of this vision and I said, how are we going to do it?
that and the stuntmen were like, well, we'll just, you know, have the walkers run into the plane and they'll fall over.
And I felt like, don't you know this already, Nicotero? What do we do? Well, they've never had
long enough. Figure it out. You've got to figure it out. It'll be fine. Because the plane wasn't
CGI. It was an actual driving plane. They actually drove like a prop plane. I know. Some of the
Ash scenes. And I like Ash. He's been in a couple, you know, TV shows that I was forced to watch from
my wife. And so, I mean, I like, I like him as an actor. He's okay. He did fine. I thought for sure he was
going to die and Carol was going to have to fly the plane yourself. But no. No, no, that does not happen.
I, okay, so it's interesting you say that because the whole scenario, I was like the only way
I'm going to be cool with this falling through is if he dies. Because she is such a bitch to this guy.
Oh, she's been, the thing, she's lying to him multiple times.
She lays the groundwork with the semi-real story into this lie, just to build it up.
It was just unbelievable.
And Sophia and all that, I'm like, and then halfway through, after, after she's just set it up, you can see like she's thinking, oh, I probably should tell him.
But she knows if she tells him it's over.
Yeah, well, because she didn't have to do it that way.
No, she didn't.
The entire time, I'm like, so Carol, the reason I love Carol,
is because she's a badass against the bad guys.
Right.
Yeah.
This guy's clearly not a bad guy.
And she knows this.
So it just seems so out of character.
Like there was times when she just looked like a stone face, like there was nothing behind her.
And I was like, that's probably because the actress is thinking this is not something Carol would do.
That's very possible.
Maybe.
Very possible.
I was really kind of.
I was disappointed.
Yeah, disappointed in that as well.
And, you know, again, I know we are bypassing a lot in the Walking Dead universe because we let a lot of things go because it's the Walking Dead universe and that's the way it is.
But I really was bugged the whole episode of Ash being out there this whole time.
And nothing has happened until Carol shows up.
Yeah.
I was like, okay.
I know I'm suspending a lot of belief.
get it, I get it.
But that's, you know, you're making me jump a long way.
Right.
At least with Dead City, when we were like, so Manhattan was basically untouched for a long
time, because they blew up the bridges.
Like, at least that makes sense.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
No question.
No question.
And then, you know, it's just so weird that, you know, that we have, this is the first
storm that's happened since the fall of the world.
The first storm.
I guess so.
I guess it's the first storm that had, you know, lightning and wind and rain.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
I just, I don't know.
I know.
It's fine.
But I was willing to let all of that go.
I mean, too.
But the only thing I could not let go was how they just completely change Carol's character.
And they would argue that, oh, no, she's always been like, you know, this conniving.
You never know what's going.
But not to someone like that.
She wouldn't do that thing.
Right.
Well, I mean, she's.
The first time, I would believe it, because she's trying to gauge the guy.
That makes the first time she lied to him.
Sure.
Yeah.
I agree.
Because I didn't know, like, I thought there's a slight chance that when she opens up that greenhouse door, he's got like a family handcuffed and he's torturing them.
Right.
Yeah.
She doesn't know what's going on.
He was busy looking at his watch, the time.
And, you know, you're wondering what the hell is going on in there.
Yeah, the first time makes sense.
That's completely in Carol's character.
The second time when she goes with the half-lie with Ed and Sophia and saying they're probably still alive in France.
When she knows that's like they share kind of a similar history.
Yeah, they do.
Like, what?
Yes.
And the reason that, you know, we brought up the whole kid thing is so that Nicotero could film his shot of Sophia coming out of the bar and walking up to Carolyn.
touching her and recreating that whole scene, you know, a little bit different than what
actually happened.
But, you know, that was the whole thing behind it.
And so we're just going to let that go.
She's not going to tell Ash that.
I mean, she had...
The thing is, we know it's...
We know the thing is we had the some...
I remember we had some similar issues with episode one of Daryl because we, of the original
episode one, because we just didn't know what the heck happened.
but we'll see what happens with the rest of the show
because we were pleasantly surprised with all of season one of Daryl
but the thing with that is when they get to France
we know that at some point he's going to find out
so we'll have to see how that happens
well does he get to France
you know they end up going to
I guess Greenland and amazingly someone is there
with another hundred gallons of gas
and we fill up the plane
and then we fly to France, and then I'm guessing that the plane crashes in France,
and he dies, but Carol is now in France.
I hope he don't live, man.
For continuity's sake, I hope he don't live.
She's going to have to kill him because they crashed in the plane,
and he's going to turn into a walker in the plane crash, so she has to kill him.
Now we have to move on.
We'll see.
And then it's a big surprise when she finally stumbles across Daryl.
I did like the...
I know.
It's like Jeffrey, guys, do you care if Carol finds Daryl at this point?
Do you care if she lives?
I don't.
I'm like, fuck her.
I mean, I do because of because of how much time we've spent with her through the years.
Yeah.
Like that's why.
I care because it's Carol.
Other than that.
See, I see where you're coming from, but I don't think no one is above.
Like, no one is just God, right?
She's not because we got to know her that she can't be unredeemable all of a sudden.
Like, eventually you can say, okay, that's just a bad person.
You know?
Right.
She was never just a bad person.
She was always a good person.
Now she's not?
And we're supposed to root for her?
I don't know.
I don't know.
Maybe.
Although the one scene where she's at the junkyard with all the mechanics, that was a really good scene.
That felt like classic Harold.
It did.
Yes, it did. Yes, it did. And it was, you know, it was cool for her to go into the, you know, the old time driving movie theater and see all the racks and see all the people from the past. And then amazingly, a plane flew over. And oh my gosh, it was a sign.
Carrie. Carol was the first person that thought, hey, there's a plane flying over. I'm going to try to track it and go where it land.
I am.
Carol's character was always so cool because she was the person that was taken advantage of, and she was underestimated.
Right?
So, like, people would underestimate her to try to take advantage of her, and she would take advantage of that, like, their perception of her.
Yes.
Well, this guy was not someone that was underestimating her, was trying to take advantage of her, and she took advantage of this guy.
Yeah, I mean, that would...
It's flipped.
She knew that because once she found her way in with the, you know, the trap and then, you know, that talked him into, you know, being kind of strangers, then she knew that this guy was not a bad guy.
She could have said there is one person that tethers me to my humanity.
One person in this entire world, and he is now lost in France.
it's the only thing I have left
and she could have gotten that same emotional
connection. You may have seen that ship
when you were flying every day
seeing that ship come to shore
and what they did is took prisoners
American prisoners back to France.
I've got to be there to find him.
Same emotional connection.
She didn't have to lie to him.
Yeah, that would have worked so much better.
Especially after, you know,
he sits down with the,
the flower
that's the same flower as Darrell gave her,
the whole thing.
Another opportunity right there.
There's some great moments.
Like, say what you will.
Nick Ataro knows what he's doing,
but...
Well, I mean, he did.
I mean, but he didn't write it, right?
No, he did not.
No.
So basically he's like,
oh, there's going to be...
So he has like a storyboard.
And he's like, all right, so
she's going to meet this, like, survivalist
who's going to have a plane.
and somehow she convinces him to fly her to France.
And then the writers get together because they're so smart.
And they're like, oh, we'll just completely change her character and ever say this.
Yeah, he doesn't have anything to do with that.
He's busy working around what he's given as far as the script goes.
And, you know, obviously creating scenes that we love.
I mean, classic Walking Dead scenes.
So, you know, that's what Nicotero does.
But you're right.
they are living on the writers
just making
complete
nonsense and not really nonsense
but just a complete reversal
of who the character is. We also have to wait to see how
this plays out as well because
it's just we don't know
we'll see how episode two
is. How many episodes of this show?
I think this is only six episodes.
Like last season? I think this season is only six
episodes. Wow. And we've got the
I mean the next five weeks and then
this season is done. I'm pretty sure.
sure that's what they said.
This show will be, they have a great first season to build off of.
They sure do.
They've got good bones.
It's the overall story I'm invested and interested in.
And the thing is, is that we all fell in love with Daryl and France.
Okay.
You sold us.
How he got there.
With Isabel and Moran.
All of it.
And we've still, we bought into the characters in France.
And now we had to spend this whole first.
episode back in America with Wacked Up Carol.
The thing is every, like the 10 minutes we had in France were great with Daryl
training Laurent and him trying to help the people in the nest and him like, you
we need to throw the first punch sometimes and then the ambush of trying to get
the prisoners back. I'm a pacifist, yeah, me too. That I can be.
Lou and I can be. Yeah, me too. Oh yeah, okay. I'm a pacifist. You know,
after I shoot an arrow in their head.
too. They're clearly
setting something up that it's
going to be interesting. Like I was like, are they thinking of
like sacrificing Laurent or something
like that? That's what it kind of sounds like. No way because
the Nest still, I mean, they believe he is the second coming
or the third coming or whatever. He's the guy.
There's no way. I mean, that's why they want
Daryl not to train him anymore because
the violence is too much. It's going to mean too much.
He's too important to have that in his brain.
Yeah. I don't know. I was thinking like, because the way he said that,
you know, like, are you prepared to do what you have to do?
And I was like, whoa.
I mean, they're kind of setting up Laurent like he's like the pseudo-Jesus upon.
They have forever.
Yeah.
So like a sacrificial lamb makes sense if that's what they're leading to.
Well, I think if you, I mean, they've already laid the groundwork for Laurent to be it, right?
He's too important to the movement and to the world.
So what, you know, I think.
The way I took that is that they're thinking that Daryl has to go and leave Laurent,
not be his, not be his guardian.
And I don't know that that's going to happen.
I don't think Daryl is going to say,
sure, go ahead, take them.
I'm coming this far.
I'm coming this far.
Yeah, no way Daryl does that.
Isn't that what he said, though?
Didn't he say the next ship I'm on?
Yeah, he did.
He did.
Yeah, he did.
He's been telling what's her face,
the new, you know,
pseudo love
that, you know, I love you bear, but
I'm out. Well, the thing is
he had a ride. He could have just
left Laurent there, but he didn't.
He had, like, on the beach.
He brought him back.
I mean, I get it, though,
because he was about to die. So I can see him
giving that up to save Laurent.
But, I mean, I don't know.
I don't know. He seems like
he's willing to leave.
I think one of the things that could keep him there,
either if Laurent is in danger of his life again,
because he's done that before.
But she will be.
Or some none business.
Right, which is, you know, I'm not opposed to.
Be clear.
I don't care of the nest we're at.
We're taking care of some done business.
All right.
That just happened.
But then we have, you know, with in France, you know,
where they were going to rescue their people, which they did,
you know, we ran into,
what's her face?
Jenna.
Yeah.
The leader of the France Army basically.
One of the leaders.
Yeah, we're the leader.
And, you know, she is now knows that it's Daryl.
Right?
She said, I should have known.
And so, I mean, that starts a whole new battle.
Like that, I love the line.
I'm paraphrasing it, but the line was basically like, oh, they always send their most vicious dog to do their dirty work.
Like, she immediately was like, oh, okay.
There's an important lesson in that scene.
So if you're ever in that situation
where it's like the ultimate of bad guys
and you have the chance to blow them away
or you're in the apocalypse or whatever,
but the situation calls for it.
Do not think about your slow-mo action.
And walking away looking like a badass.
You load that MFER fast
and you pull the trigger fast.
That's what you do.
You don't say something clever, you know, like I'll be Bach,
or whatever.
Be fair, Darylton say anything.
clever. Don't be thinking
about that. You just pull the trigger.
I love the one-handed
open of the shotgun
and the job of the shell. It was awesome.
He's dragging the moment out.
I'm like, no! This is the first rule.
And Daryl knows that.
That's because those
nesters are playing on his mind
a little bit with that hole.
I'm a pacifist.
Me too.
The only thing missing is like,
did I tell you I was a good trumpet player
because I'm about to blow you
away.
Come on, dude.
Pull the tricker.
That one's not, that one's not.
Daryl wouldn't say that whole.
Obviously, I was like,
are they going to shock us and actually kill her?
No, okay.
No. Of course, no.
She's got to be a lot because she's going to end up.
She's going to be the one with Carol, right?
And that's how they get,
that's how she's going to think they get Daryl
because she's got Carol.
They tease so many lady bosses at the end of this.
I had no, I thought she was the main lady boss,
but I guess there was like two other lady bosses that are also involved.
I didn't see any others.
I just saw, I just saw Janet and Carol.
I saw two other lady bosses in the preview that I have not seen yet.
And I was like, I don't know.
Yeah, I don't know.
Okay, plus, I mean, they've got the one guy still hunting Darrell.
He's still pissed, right?
he still wants
he wants Daryl's head
Yeah he just he just didn't agree
with how they were going to try to kill or take
Laurent so that's why he let Daryl go originally
but right
anyway
we'll see I mean I
from the very beginning
when we found out that this was good
these episodes were going to be the book of Carol
we were a little disheartened
because we were so bought into
Daryl in France
fighting his way to save Lerine
and get back to America
I mean the
The full object is him, you know, bringing Laurent and...
Isabel?
Back to America, right?
He's going to, they have to come to America and leave.
Then the hunt comes back to America because the Frenchies are going to have to come back to
America because they're going to be after Laurent.
I mean, I'm not writing the show.
They didn't ask me.
I mean, I'm not a professional writer like Jason Butrell.
I'm just saying what I see.
They can call me or email the show
Tooting the fat at the blaze.com
anytime I'm willing to help.
One thing I'm excited to see
I'm guessing
my guess is next episode
we're going to spend more time in France
but we're probably also going to
about half the episode's going to be in France
and about half the episode's going to be with
Carol and Ash trying to get there
which will be great because they're just flying
across the ocean. No, no no
the plan was they're going up the coast
to Greenland and then
That'll be sitting in their little plane cub.
Oh, yes, you do anything yet?
No, you still got, I'm almost out of gas.
I hope you can't do something.
Oh, no, I can't switch to the other tank.
The hose is broken.
What can we do?
Come on.
That sucks it up, I think.
Oh, no, these people are not friendly after all.
Oh, no.
Is that an island with birds on it?
We'll land there.
Okay.
But one thing.
I'm excited to see
is Carol telling
Darrell Rick came back.
Hopefully that's a good scene.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I hope that's a good scene.
Do we think that they're going to meet up
before the end of the season?
Oh, if they don't meet episode four,
that's my guess.
I mean, with six episodes
of where we're at now, there's going to be some fast-tracking
going on in some of these episodes.
One was only six or six or eight episodes.
It wasn't too long.
I know, but they were building, they were hooking us on the world of Daryl in France.
And now we've got Daryl in France and we've got to have Carol on the hunt.
And so there's got to be some fast tracking.
Because, okay, so she's going to, let's, let's pretend that everything is fine.
And by gosh, you know, amazingly, the plane glided halfway across the Atlantic Ocean and land.
and friends.
With a bit stop of Greenland.
Now what?
Hey, you see my friend Daryl?
I've been looking for my friend
Daryl.
And so, I mean, I...
While she's keeping up the lie.
He's got to die on the blood crash.
No, he's got to. I don't think he'll die.
Yeah, Ash has got to die.
Ash is going to be with...
Ash do that when he signed the contract
to be out of the show.
Oh, you mean I survived through a whole episode?
Okay, fine.
No, he's going to be throughout.
He's going to be in the whole season.
That's my prediction.
if he survives i think he's like leverage for carol to work with these people or whatever which
she's going to fall into their clutches immediately so do we think that ash that will come up that
he lands he gets injured uh but he does not dead but amazingly for years ash learned how to speak
frenchy french french he's he's her helper he's her interpreter maybe he found some french manuals
like the ones he found that helped him assemble an entire freaking line.
I used to sit at my son's grave for eight years.
I just taught myself Frenchy French.
No, he didn't assemble the plane.
No, you need to be more.
What he said.
No, he said he took a part, he found the plane, took it apart,
and then brought it back to put it back together.
That's what happened.
You do two manuals.
But he found some manuals, which are everywhere.
Like, I can't even get to work without tripping over airplane manuals.
This is cool crap.
He had a generator, though, so he was logging on the YouTube.
Don't fool you.
He had a generator that turned off about 45% of the time.
Which he waits to like five or six times a day.
The door just swings open.
All you have to do is push that reset button and fires right back up.
You're good.
Don't worry about.
He never heard of the phrase design flaw.
Like maybe there's an issue with how he designed that game.
He might need to get a new generator.
Well, he hadn't found the right manual for that, yeah.
That's an issue.
All right, so next episode, the next week,
title Moulin Rouge.
And so we'll see.
We'll see.
I am looking forward to it.
I'm happy that we're back in the Walking Dead universe again.
No question.
There's so many new shows happening,
and yet I feel, you know,
driven to come back to the Walking Dead universe.
I was happy for that.
Sure.
Yeah.
Same.
I'm just a little annoyed with how they're doing it.
I wish we could get a little less carol or just be enough already.
I'd be fine if they just teleported ahead, maybe three months and just put them together.
If that's the whole point, just to get them together.
If we're going to fast track it, yeah.
Fine.
Fine.
I don't care about the journey.
Well, then you're going to have, and if they do that, then you can have, if they're going to fast track it, because they're going to have to.
you know what that's not a bad idea let's fast track it to that and then we can be given a few
flashbacks how she got there sure yeah that doesn't sound like too bad that'd be fine but
i kind of like the idea of our beloved group with what they learned and how they learned to
survive injected into this foreign land yes how our boys and girls do yes fine with that and
carroll can bake you know muffins for the nest i wonder what her reactions will be to the
acid walkers, the ones that grab you and will just burn you.
Plus, we're going to have to have the runners.
I mean, it's going to be like she's going to go.
Yeah, we saw that, the trailer running.
How about we take this Jesus kid, get the hell out of here?
Jesus, kid.
I'm going to go.
I am super happy we're back in the world of the walking dead.
How long has it been since the ones who live?
It's been a while.
Like, but it's been quite a while.
Yeah, we've already moved down past.
It feels, it feels nice.
to be back in this universe that we have felt connected with for years.
I mean, walking dead, 11 seasons, fear, eight seasons.
It was good to have the flashback to season two with the kid.
Young Daryl.
You just reminded me of something else that pissed me off.
The last time we were in this world.
Wrapping it up.
Was when Judith didn't even care that her dad returned from the dead.
Oh, my God.
She hugged him.
She hugged.
She cared.
She didn't even care.
Oh, my God.
You're right.
You shouldn't have brought that up.
We got to go on.
Thanks for listening.
You're talking walking dead.
Jason Butchell, Maximus Fisher.
We'll be with you next week.
My gosh.
Now I'm angry all over again.
We'll see you next week.
