Starting point is 00:00:00 Season 5, episode 10 of Fear, the Walking Dead, titled 2010 words per minute. That makes this Talking Fear. Welcome to it. Talking Fear, it is with myself, Jeff Fisher, Jason Buttrill, and of course, Maximus Fisher's still missing in action. The IMDB description of this episode, Morgan and Grace Search and abandoned shopping mall for supplies and to fulfill a dying man's wish. there the mission quickly turns to a fight for survival. Meanwhile, Dwight's resolve. I'm about ready to give up on the show.
Starting point is 00:00:54 I'm about ready to give up on it. I think I know what your complaints and gripes are, because I think that the same as mine. I think we'll agree. But mine are the same as what they've always been, is that they have cool, like, setups. The situation is cool, but the story is just dumb. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:01:14 Like, it's, they've done, zombie movies have done the mall before. But it's cool. So I don't really care how many times they do the mall. Right. It's just a cool, like, if there's an apocalypse, you want to be in the mall. Of course. Get whatever you want.
Starting point is 00:01:25 It would be fun. And we spent this whole time in this mall and we don't think about staying there. Making that. Fused. Yeah. I mean, instead we're going to go to, you know, we passed a ranch a couple miles back. Yeah. It might need some clearance.
Starting point is 00:01:43 you know, and it's going to suck, but... We could just hang out there, because we don't want Logan and his crew to find the mall. Because nobody could find a mall. There was a bed store for crying out loud. You could be sleeping in all those beds. Head on down to the, what, the jamba juice, you know, and pick up some jamba juice. The mall to me was like the Walking Dead prison. It was a good place to be.
Starting point is 00:02:05 It was a good... The prison actually was better than the mall. But it would seem that you could clear most of that mall. and board up most of it and secure it to keep an eye on it so you could feel pretty safe. Shoot, you could like conduct, you could like build a little fence around it, you know? Yeah. Like the Alexandria, you know, couple did. You know, screw it.
Starting point is 00:02:27 You know, build a fence around that bad boy. Just, it was a surprising to me. And then, you know, we had, of course, you, from the very beginning, you knew you were going to get the Grace and Morgan set up for a love affair. Yeah. throughout the whole episode. And she had to, you know, the whole purpose of going into the mall other than, you know, finding goods and whatever else they needed was to, A, help some guy
Starting point is 00:02:55 we never met, talking to us over the Channel 4 that was dying. Yeah. And for all intents and purposes, they were just going there to kill him. Right. The only reason they were risking their lives was just to go kill a guy that was already dead. But listen, Jason, we're doing. we're not doing careful, we're doing right.
Starting point is 00:03:14 That's the line. That's the line. That's what's so agonized. So that's the issue I have, which I assume you as well. Like even that, so there was plots within the plot, like Shakespeare and play within the play of stupidity in this. The whole main plot was stupid. Go there, kill a dead guy.
Starting point is 00:03:32 That's dumb. I'm not risking my life to do that. And then the play within the play was she was trying to wade through all the walkers risking their lives. So she could do a sonogram to find out an answer to a problem she couldn't fix anyway. Or an x-ray. Or, you know, an x-ray or, you know,
Starting point is 00:03:49 whatever we could get to because we've got to get to, you know, turn on the generator to turn on all the power that just seems to go on forever. Yeah. No problem. This generators run forever. Probably they have unlimited gas. So I thought was going bad, but apparently it's not.
Starting point is 00:04:04 No, no, not this gas. That's a special gas. This gas is not going bad. Just like when Morgan and Grace gets stuck in the store. Like the GNC. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I kept to think it was an exercise store.
Starting point is 00:04:24 It's not an exercise store. Like a supplement store. That's close enough to exercise for me. I understand why you're having these problems because you just never heard of these terms before, like exercise and supplements. So the reason that they get stuck in the store is because they get the walkers away from them
Starting point is 00:04:42 so they could get into the urgent care facility. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Would this have been your nightmare scenario? Like you have jamba juice and pretzels plays. You get stuck in the athletic, you know, the nutrition store. You can't let that go. Because you're like, oh, now it shifts into a horror show. Okay, now I get it.
Starting point is 00:05:04 Freaking nutrition store. The answer to that is yes. So they get them away, and then Grace decides she's going to follow the herd to try to kill who she thinks is the red jacket guy. Yeah. Just agonizing. So then they get caught in the supplement store. They can't leave the supplement store out back because there's walkers there, except when the walkers are coming through the front door, the walkers at the back door have gone away. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:33 Don't understand. That's Walker psychology. Everyone knows this. I apologize. Yeah. I apologize. Now, so then that's just Morgan and Grace in the mall, right? Now, Dwight was there in the beginning, and then he left because he had to go bring,
Starting point is 00:05:53 he wanted to go get the convoy to the mall, which apparently no one knows where this mall is. I don't know if you know this, I mean, I've seen malls before. I mean, you can find them. It's pretty easy. There's big signs. It says mall. Right there.
Starting point is 00:06:08 and then he gets captured. I did kind of enjoy that. The Dwight capture scenes were, were okay. Yeah, he's got some weird conflict because it sounded like he was being very pragmatic. Well, he knows,
Starting point is 00:06:25 in talking to Morgan, he knows that to turn into what he was before, you have to let go of your heart and let go of your soul and let go of what you believe in and nothing matters, right? It doesn't matter. Screw you.
Starting point is 00:06:41 You turn into Negan, and that's what Negan did. You throw everything up. You forget all that stuff, all the good stuff. Right, you have to become that. He had a good line where he was like it's easy to lose what you had, your humanity. It's a lot harder to get it back or to find it or somebody. It was a good line. And so, you know, that struggle I kind of get, and it was nice to see him beat that out, I guess.
Starting point is 00:07:05 I don't know that. I mean, I think the world wanted him to kill that guy. Yes, but so what was the point? Was it, was it just cathartic for him? That's all that was for. Just to see if he really did regain his humanity. And to, you know, we'll run into that guy again and that guy will go, I made my choice. It's evil.
Starting point is 00:07:22 And Dwight will have to kill him. I mean, I can see that in another three episodes, right? Yeah. I made my choice. I'm evil. And then he'll have to die. Yeah. So at the hands of Dwight, because Dwight will have to feel sad about killing him and realizing
Starting point is 00:07:36 that not everybody can turn back. to good, which goes back to his line of it's easier to lose it than to find it, right? Or to gain it back after you lose it. And then we get back to the Grace and Morgan and the mall and they find the guy with the jacket who was supposed to stay in the room but didn't stay in the room and he wanted to get up on the roof and I hope it didn't confuse you too bad. No, of course not, baby. We know you're dying.
Starting point is 00:08:06 We're here for you. It's like the scene was not bad in my opinion. Like there was a lot of humanity to it. It was like the actors did a good job. It was just, I guess it was just kind of sweet. But it didn't work for a complete stranger. I could see that going down with a member of their group or something like that. Because I didn't care this guy was dying.
Starting point is 00:08:25 Didn't care. The whole reason for them being there was just stupid. Yeah. And I guess that's what blew it for me really is. They have no story. They're not telling a story. And at this point, they're not even trying to advance the story. At all.
Starting point is 00:08:41 At all. Is this two, three weeks in a row now where nothing really has happened? I mean, we start out like something is going to happen, and we're right back at the beginning again. Yeah. Right back at the beginning. Yeah, it's very circular. And I don't, I mean, that's the merry-go-round, right? I mean, it's a good analogy of the merry-go-round going around around in circles because that's what the show's doing.
Starting point is 00:09:02 Right. It's like, you know, go back to like Walking Dead, you know, like the, all out war, you know, plotline or whatever. Like every single, we may not have been totally satisfied after every episode, but at least I feel like they were advancing. Advancing, yes. Yeah, through the story. I do not feel like they're advancing through the story at all.
Starting point is 00:09:18 I was ready to give up. I was ready to give up. I'd tell you what, I would be the only thing that keeps me around is the brief, like, a small hope that they might show something else that would point towards the movies. That really is the only reason. That's the only thing. I'm like, well, maybe they'll bring back that group, you know, and we'll get a little bit more of a taste of,
Starting point is 00:09:39 because otherwise I don't really care to watch it. If I'm watching something else, I like, I just, I'm a nut over the zombie genre. So I pretty much, even bad movies, I'll watch them. Sure, they're fun. So this is now a bad show because the plot sucks. Yeah. But I still like the surviving in a mall.
Starting point is 00:09:58 We're investing. We've invested in this now. I mean, we're like, you know, the guy that, you know, spent all the money in the stock market. Not that I've ever done that and then watch the stock market go down to zero and don't have a dime to my name. But that's where I'm at with the show. Right.
Starting point is 00:10:12 So we're so vested in it. I'm like, okay, well, I got to make it through it. We've got to get to the end. Yeah. And so, you know, that's where I'm at. And then I was just, haven't we seen Morgan struggle with his death of his son and the death of his wife already? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:32 Like episode one? And we've seen we've been through. We do, you know, he can't be happy. I mean, I would be okay with Morgan having a little bit of love and still at least moving the episodes forward. Yeah. Instead of, you know, we're doing good and everything's doing good. Why?
Starting point is 00:10:59 What are you doing? What's it for? Dude, even the love story that they're hinting at with Morgan and grace. It's still like we use that circular description. Like at the very end, like he went back to being, I'm going to run off and do my own thing and hide type of thing.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Because I can't be, I can't be, I can't enjoy this the way it is. So then what was the point? Like literally, what was the point of the last 55 minutes? Right. It was like you were teasing us,
Starting point is 00:11:31 setting us up that, okay, he's moving on. Now he's got a smile back. She kept talking about. and then at the end he goes back to the beginning of the episode. I can't have my smile back. What? And okay, so let's hope that if we can't have our smile back,
Starting point is 00:11:44 that we're going to go back to at least the Morgan saying we're going to get out of here and we're going to go meet up with our group in Virginia that has a better place. Yeah. That doesn't really have a better place, but he thinks they do. What's so weird, Jeffie, is it? We complained a lot when fear first came out that they did. and have good character development. So we were like, that's why this show sucks
Starting point is 00:12:08 because they didn't develop the characters. And we kept comparing it to Walking Dead how they developed the characters. This now, we know everything about the characters. They're developed, and it still sucks. That's crazy. It doesn't. They fixed our, you know, bitching about it,
Starting point is 00:12:24 and it still sucks. We do have the character development for the characters that we like and don't like. We know who's who and what's what with those characters. you're 100% right. And yet now the storyline is just circular. It doesn't go anywhere. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:41 I mean, I think it's just because literally this, they're not advanced, like we said it, but they're not advancing the story. So it doesn't matter how developed the characters are. That's why I think that literally, I'll go back to an idea I had a few weeks ago
Starting point is 00:12:52 where I was like, look, you're spending too much in actors because you don't need those actors. Like literally you could make Fear the Walking Dead a show or it's just a random group every season and just rehire actors. higher actors. When the actors sign on, they sign on for that season and you know that's all you're getting. And they'll get a bunch of other no names because you don't, you don't need big stars on this
Starting point is 00:13:12 show. No, you don't. If you have a really in-depth story, you do. And you want to see those characters follow through. But I don't care right. Because you're not, like I said, you're not showing any growth. It's very, very circular. It doesn't matter. But if you just had a bunch of random Joe Schmo's having to survive in a mall, I'll watch that. I mean, I've actually, yeah, we talked about that before, you're right. And I think, I think I'd buy into that as well. I would watch. If you, you know, this year is, you know, Fear of the Walking Dead, New Jersey Mall. Right. Fear of the Walking Dead, you know, Houston Waterway. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I would definitely watch those shows. That, that I could actually get into. Those seasons would be great.
Starting point is 00:13:54 Then you could watch a show like, you know, some random, you know, group of zombies that are attacking this house, a woman wouldn't come out and they're being getting exploded on, you know, landmines or whatever. But as of now, I just don't care. You know, I really don't care. Like, if you're not going to develop the story, if you're not going to develop a story from characters that have, that are deeply developed,
Starting point is 00:14:15 that is why we're just not into the show anymore. Boom, right? Right there. That is the entire problem with this show. And that, my friends, is Fear of the Walking Dead. So next week is episode 11 of season five. for those of us that are still counting the episodes. And it's Alicia struggling on her own somewhere,
Starting point is 00:14:39 I guess with Strand or they're separate and they're both out wandering around. Instead of, you know, we may get a glimpse of the farm, maybe. The ranch. I'm sorry. I've called it a farm. I apologize. This Texas.
Starting point is 00:14:57 Is it? It's supposed to be. I don't know. Is it? because I don't know where we're at. It's a wormhole, Texas. Thank you. So, you know, we're not going to get any of the bad guy, right?
Starting point is 00:15:10 I mean, we're not. I don't know. They showed at the very end of the teaser. It looked like him. It sounded like him saying like, I'm here or something like that. And he was in like a warehouse, it seemed like. Okay. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:15:20 Oh, yeah, because they were still looking for the oil fields. Yeah. So apparently this group is blind. They can't find malls. They can't find oil well. In Texas, mind you. I don't know. I thought they turn around.
Starting point is 00:15:34 Oh, crap. Another oil field. I mean, it's just amazing to me. Maybe there's no oil fields in the mountainous region of Texas. You know in Texas with all those huge mountains. That we flew over. Yeah. Maybe that part of Texas.
Starting point is 00:15:48 To get away. I really, I just don't understand. But, you know, look, the guy that plays Logan is another guy that goes against what we were saying or goes for what we were saying kind of i mean he's a pretty well-known actor yeah you know at least a character actor i mean you know his face you know who he is right i mean when you see him you go oh yeah him doesn't necessarily mean you know his name he could be good he could i mean if there was a good enough story in writing for it he could be good but it's so hilarious this group i watched did you i watched the last like five minutes of last week's episode right before this one before it comes off
Starting point is 00:16:23 and it's supposed to be this scary moment they pull up in a freaking hunday You expect to see a mom come out with her kids for soccer practice or something like that. And it's this rag-tag group that isn't scary at all. I mean, like, what? Like, you want to laugh. And he's like, that one lady points the gun. He's like, well, I wouldn't do that if I were you. As if Dirty Harry is pointing a gun at him.
Starting point is 00:16:48 And it's this lady that is like four feet tall. I'm like, what is it? This group is that scary? Amazing. I mean, you would literally. have to, our entire convoy could drive over the one vehicle they have if they wanted to go find them.
Starting point is 00:17:03 They could roll over their Hyundai and get rid of this big threat once and for all for crying out loud. It's hilarious. It's amazing. And I just, you know, I would, I won't give up. I'm still vested. It's all good.
Starting point is 00:17:20 But, man, they better pick up the pace. Don't give, if you're discouraged by what we're saying, yeah, don't give up. because literally go through with the optics of how we just described it. Yes, these characters are very developed.
Starting point is 00:17:33 There is no story. That is the reason why we're getting disappointed because there is no story. So just look at it as I'm watching a, you know, how many episodes are there? There's 20 episodes or whatever. 16. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:17:47 I think there's like 16. 16. And just look at as a one-off type, you know, movie where you're not going to get any kind of development. They're not going to advance the storyline. And it's going to, to be a whole lot of nothing.
Starting point is 00:17:58 But the settings are going to be cool. It's going to be cool when they're in a, you know, you're going to be in a mall type situation. We have to survive or whatever. With the rad. Don't think, don't think of why they're there because then you'll get disappointed again
Starting point is 00:18:11 and not going to want to watch it. So don't give a crap about the overall plot. Right. Just have fun every time a walker gets poked in the face with a. And it's obviously got to be, it's obviously got to be, uh, some kind of,
Starting point is 00:18:24 uh, budget too, right? Because we're, I mean, the bigger characters, like we got Daniel this week at the end in the mall, so he gets paid for the full episode, right? But the others, they're not nowhere to be found. I mean, the other big stars are off wandering around somewhere.
Starting point is 00:18:41 That's true. That's a heck of a gig. If you're like that tier of an actor, which they probably command a larger salary. Yeah. And you don't have to do anything. You know, like if you're in this episode, you're literally going to, the big names are just going to be there for what? 10, 5, 10 minutes
Starting point is 00:18:56 of the actual screen time? Daniel walks up to the outside of the mall, sets down his cat. Okay, we got to go. Oh, no, then he went to the gas station, right? We saw him at the gas station, and then they have to keep moving, get out of there,
Starting point is 00:19:09 because it wasn't too long since the Hyundai left. And they end up at the mall. It's a scary, Hyundai, though. So scary. Look at this group. They're scary. Wow. That's it.
Starting point is 00:19:23 I don't know. This talking fear. Thank you so much for listening to Talking Fear. Don't forget to subscribe to Chewing the Fat with yours, truly Jeff Fisher.
