Season 5, episode 14 of Fear the Walking Dead, titled Today and Tomorrow.
Welcome to Talking Fear.
Yes, indeed. Welcome to it.
Myself, Jeff Fisher, along with Jason Butchrell here, Talking Fear, as the title tells you we do.
Episode description on IMDB, an encounter with the survivor sends Alan Morgan on a mission into a dangerous settlement there.
Al Chases a lead while Morgan has an epiphany.
Elsewhere, Grace and Daniel make a connection.
Ugh.
Okay, but I will say this.
I will say this.
I really kind of felt like this episode was,
it felt like a good episode while I was watching it.
Because it was like something actually happened and they were out.
I don't know, just kind of, I don't know.
Well, they kind of all feel like that.
That's been my deal.
Again, I think that that, my little I'm, my little I think so too, you know, mind control thing is helping.
Because literally, if you watch these and don't expect any plot development, you're perfectly fine with it.
You know what I mean?
Yeah.
I think it's funny, the title today and tomorrow, for some reason, reminds me of like Groundhog Day.
Maybe like tomorrow is just the same as today.
That's how these shows are.
You know what I mean?
Like you go in a big circle and that's about it.
And you don't feel like you really, do you feel like you really?
No, in fact, I take just with show notes as I'm watching the show, and I just write them down and post them on a sheet for us to look at so that we have a timeline of the show.
My last comment of this week's show notes is the show is still driving in circles.
Exactly.
Exactly right.
I mean, that's where I'm at with it.
Yeah.
But then they dress it up, you know, with a few cool scenes, you know, infiltrating the, you know, the cosplay cowboy actors.
into their little place,
which is stupid.
Just stop with that crap.
The Mounties, man.
I love the Mounties.
I love them.
I love them.
Why are you calling them Mounties?
I don't know.
I don't know.
Last night I just kept calling them the Mounties.
I don't know why.
The week before, I guess they were,
I had some other stupid name for them.
But when they were, when the opening scene
when Alan and
Morgan found the guy
which leads me back to
last week with the girl and the shooting
stuff we thought that she was going to be a girl
running away from them.
Well this week we meet the guy that was running away
from them, right? So we know something is
not all that's
made out to be with the Mounties
but when they were
in the, when they were hiding out in the car
and getting the gas cap
and the guys on the horses were looking
for them. I just did all it came to
My head was the Mounties riding around.
Yeah.
It was just, I don't know.
So that, I mean, and that kind of goes to your point is that, that was an interesting
scene, though.
Sure.
Like, yeah, that was like hiding from him.
You could fill a tent.
Yeah.
The actors did a good job.
They gave you the Jurassic Park horse blowing on the window, you know, so the guy could
look at himself.
Right.
Yes, that was good.
Yeah.
That was good.
Yeah.
And Morgan and Al didn't know anything about this group.
Right.
Well, Al said she did, though.
At one point, she told Morgan that she had, she knew.
about them. She had heard about them or she knew about them, but she didn't know anything more than
just a, you know, a periphery knowing of them. Because she thought they might be tied to her girlfriend
in the helicopter. Right. Right. For sure. But they don't know, as of this moment, correct me if I'm wrong,
but they don't know anything about the oil refinery yet. They don't know about the Mounties rolling up
to the oil refinery and basically taking it and shooting all the... They do at the end at the show. Yeah,
they found out at the end of this show. Morgan and Al found out that
they know. How did they find out?
I don't remember that. Because they were, the truck rolled into the, into the apartment complex,
the ridge place, whatever it was. Oh, that's right. That's right.
And that's why she said, I know you. I know you. Because she said the oil rinks and she said,
not anymore. It's ours. We made the deal. That's right. And she said, I know you from the,
you know, from the tapes and they are. They were all happy. Ha, ha, ha. We're going to let you go free.
and here's your newly
lathed stick, Morgan, we love you
and Al, here's your videotapes, you know, fully charged
with your machine and off you go.
So they knew about three quarters into the show,
but at the very beginning, they did not.
They didn't, yeah, they were just going off
doing another help mission, right, basically.
Yeah, because they were,
Al was all ready to go back
and Morgan's, we got help, we've still got boxes in the car,
we've still got boxes in the car,
we've got to help, we've got to help.
And Al's finally like, okay, okay.
Morgan, no problem.
Okay, I got you.
All right.
Don't worry about us running out of gas or anything.
We'll go drop off a box.
So this dude was that he said he was the president of the Homeowners Association or something
like that.
Yeah, he got it because nobody else, nobody else wanted it.
Right.
That's how, yeah, the guy that was running away from them.
He had a good line.
I like that when Morgan was all, you know, we just want to help, man.
And he was all, yeah, that's what they said.
That's what they said.
Yeah.
Interesting.
It's kind of meta in the fact that every time someone shows up saying we're here to help.
Yeah.
And these days, anew.
Right.
A Paradise Ridge.
That's what it was called.
It's a Paradise Ridge.
That was their complex.
So that was like, sorry, back out of that, it was funny.
That was like the famous Reagan quote.
He was like, you know, the biggest nightmare, you know, or.
Oh, yeah, when the government says they're here to help.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
That's not good.
And that's holding true more and more today, by the way.
But back to the show.
So then, and then so then we had, we had, those were the two that we had this week.
We had Morgan and Al and Daniel and Grace.
Nobody else in the show.
Except for, you know, the Mounties and the Mounties, that was it.
Right.
And three or four, maybe ten of the Mounties.
Right?
We had the leader of the Mounties and her helpful people.
and then they showed the four that were out searching for them
and then whatever ones were running at Paradise Ridge
but I mean not that many.
See, you can't do that because that's when you really start losing interest.
Like they should take a more like Star Wars approach to how they do these things.
You know, like everyone's split up,
but then the screen will go to black and it'll come back up
and you get an update on what's happening with, you know, Luke and Yoda.
Agreed.
You know what I mean?
Or whatever.
And I think that the Walking Dead did that in the beginning.
Like they would have people go off to different locations.
but they would take the Star Wars approach.
Yeah, they would.
And you'd get at least an update.
Even if they didn't get a lot of screen time,
you'd get an update of what was happening.
Right.
And they don't do that at all.
Like you'll get, what?
I don't know.
You'll get two episodes, at least sometimes more.
Oh, yeah.
Or you just don't hear about them.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, we've gone two or three episodes now
where they opened up with,
we talked about it last week or the week before
where they opened up with the great scene
of the caravan,
setting up, which I thought was great.
Yeah.
But that was it.
That's all we got out of the caravan, then we're done.
Yeah.
And we said before that, well, I could have watched an entire episode.
Yes.
Just breaking down and setting up.
Let's see it.
Let's see them working at it.
I know.
It's great.
So then we had Daniel and Grace out hawking things.
And, you know, Daniel carrying us the Skidmark cat around, which I find kind of funny.
And, you know, they're all coming to grips with who they are and what they're,
what they're doing in life
and how important it is
and what a deal is.
It's time for Daniel to snap.
I want something to happen to have him snap.
I want something to happen to have
Dwight snap. I want them all
to go back to this get over
in the Morgan. We've got to help and we're all
lovy-dovey. It's time.
It might happen.
Good. Something's got to happen though. I feel like
one of them. Something's got to happen
where, like he said
that Charlie was the one that made him
come back and want to live life again, right?
Oh, something's going to happen, Charlie.
Yes.
Yeah, so you're going.
Yeah.
I mean, something's got to happen to where he's going to snap, right?
It go back to being the Sandinista all over again.
Right, right.
The freedom fighter all over again.
You know how rare it is to have like a, yeah, like a South American insurgent
freedom fighter in your group?
Come on.
Leverage that crap.
You aren't lying.
I mean, even if you don't, I mean, I don't know that he's actually sat down and said,
You know, I used to fight these guys in the jungle.
This is nothing.
I don't believe he's told them that.
We just told him bull crap because every time he would start drinking,
you know that would come out.
Right.
No one keeps their worst.
But none of those people are around.
Right?
The only other person that would know that now is what's his face?
Ow.
You know.
A guy?
Yes.
The guy that one of the original.
Nick?
No.
Nick's gone.
Nick's dead.
he would know.
Oh,
you mean still around?
I don't know.
Alicia would know.
Oh, no,
no, no, no.
Yeah, yeah, Strand.
Strand.
Strand would know.
Yeah.
Which is why they,
which is why they still kind of,
they don't like each other,
but they like each other.
Because they've both got war stories.
Right.
That they've told.
So it's just like, okay.
They know who they were in the past,
what they've done to each other also.
But yeah,
I guess for,
I don't know,
to be fair.
birth learning to forget.
Yeah, yeah, they're trying.
Yeah, they're trying, right.
So, I mean, that's why they're still kind of okay, you know.
But you're right about, uh, so then Grace, of course, uh, wants to keep taking more
because she's on the Morgan plan of it's never enough.
And, and we break down and we've got to stay at a bar and we're going to sing.
Oh, that was painful.
That was painful.
I was like, I was watching that.
I was like, is this really happening right now?
They're not really going to do this, are they?
They're not going to do this.
Yes, they are.
Yes, they are.
He just breaks out of guitar.
I was like, oh, no.
I guess that would be real life, kind of?
Kind of?
Maybe.
Didn't we liken this show like a bad, like musical?
Yeah.
Like a few episodes ago?
Yeah, yeah.
Again.
There you go.
There you go.
That's exactly it.
And further proof that they're listening to this podcast.
I will say, and then we had to thank you.
And I will say that the, then we get back to Morgan and Al
sneaking around Paradise Ridge,
yapping on their walkie-talkies.
putting flashlights on and in the rooms and hunting around.
Nobody sees that.
Yeah.
Okay.
Okay.
Literally might as well just been yelling across the little apartment complex.
Hey, you are, okay.
Right.
Don't make too much noise over there.
And I'm to believe that these guys have taken over to Paradise Ridge and cleared it.
Yet there's still a walker in the apartment, the one apartment that Morgan goes in,
there's still a walker locked in a closet.
Yeah.
Well, but that was because that he,
the other guy they picked up said my sister that I guess that he's told them my sister is in this apartment
they didn't explain that too much no they did so I guess that was going on behind the scenes
she lives there I guess the only way she was able to escape was shooting one of the mounties
and that was one of the mounties so she just hid that mounty in the closet and then ran off all right
okay yeah that makes sense now it makes sense but you have to work you have to strain because
they didn't really explain that so I do I did like the the pool death
though when they fell in
when Alan
they fell in the pool
and then they all jumped in
they killed the walker in the pool
and especially the far away shot
when they give you the drone shot
of the blood in the pool
with the walker or the pool
that was a cool shot
that was good
yeah that was really good
I got no issues at all
with how they shoot this
none I mean the way they do it's great
did you see the promotional picture
for next week's episode
where it's like John Dory
facing one way and it's Morgan face
to the other.
Man, they did a good job with that.
Their cinematographer is on point.
But the unfortunate thing is he's not given much to work with.
I know.
The thing that we do have to look forward to is at least we got the great dead promo
coming up on 10th 6th.
Yeah.
Makes me can't wait.
Silence the whispers.
I know.
Makes me can't wait for the walking dead.
But I digress.
We're still on talking for you.
and so we have Al and Morgan and they end up, you know, talking to whatever stupid name is, the head of the Mounties.
Is it Virginia?
Yeah, it is.
It is Virginia.
Yeah.
And by the way, Al's entire premise for this is exactly like going to a mall and risking everything to try and get an R.I.
Yeah.
Or something like that.
Yes.
It's stupid.
Or, yeah, waiting through all these walkers.
to try and kill the one dead guy.
She's done multiple times, by the way.
Yeah.
And then she, yeah, and she's like, oh, I just want to, I want to infiltrate this place to
try and see if my girlfriend's there.
I was like, what?
What are you talking about?
I know, like, what?
I mean, first of all, it's obvious that that's not her.
Like, that's not her people.
You know, she's dressed in the black warmer, all the stuff.
Yeah, her girlfriend is not a Western house player.
The Mounties aren't yours.
Okay, they're different.
Yeah.
I mean, that should have been obvious.
But risking all of that, just,
I don't know.
It's just,
it's not believable.
It's like,
this is stupid.
I know.
I know.
So off they go.
You know,
they let them go because they,
you know,
they made the deal.
And I really,
Virginia said,
hey,
have some of our jam.
We've got your oil now.
And here's your stick
and here's your stuff
and get out of here.
Have a nice day.
You know,
what's interesting is,
okay.
The,
the,
the cosplayers didn't know anything
about the helicopter people.
you notice that?
Right.
Or they were playing dumb, but it didn't seem like they knew anything about it.
No, they didn't.
And they're supposed to be, you know, they've covered all this ground.
They're getting bigger all the time, right?
You saw the wall of growth that Al was filming with her giant spotlight that, of course, no one saw in the room.
But, you know, you saw the wall of growth.
So I've got to go back and look at that too.
Maybe I'll go back and look at.
That should tell us kind of where they're at.
That's right.
It was in the background, right?
Yeah, she was filming.
Yeah, she was filming.
We've got to see if that tells us where they're at
because in the beginning, Al says,
we've never been this far west before.
Wait, I thought we were going east.
I'm really confused where they're at.
It's makeup land.
Yes.
It is makeup land.
I'm pretty sure.
And now at the end, we have Grace and Daniel
still hanging out at the bar
with Morgan rushing to her rescue because she's sick.
Wasn't it diabetes or something she had?
it wasn't the illness of the thing.
I thought she had low blood sugar or something at the mall.
That's right.
It could have been that, but yeah, I took it as the radiation.
Yeah, that's what I think that's what they wanted us to take.
But I thought originally it was just, you know, here's a candy bar.
Shut up.
That's possible.
But yeah, I bet you that if it is the radiation, which it seems like that's what they're
going to have it be, so stupid.
Again, like Morgan has that big thing where he's all, I'm back.
I think.
figured it out, I'm good.
Death.
Yeah, he goes back and now she's going to die.
I'm like, what are you doing?
Death.
Who writes like that?
You can do that once.
You cannot do that 50 freaking times in one season.
Well, but I mean, that's what they're doing.
You say they can't do it, but they're doing it.
You can't do that and retain all your viewers.
Let me just put it that way.
I know.
I know.
We were just talking, I don't know, maybe we talked about it.
last week too. But I mean, the ratings are still, you know, okay. They were like, uh, they're not
number one, but they were, I think, fourth or fifth overall on cable shows. And that's going to be
strong enough to continue on for till the end of time as long as you're in the top five.
I think the, I literally, I think the majority of people are just, are fine, like you and I are
nuts over this series, like, or the subject matter, because we're so invested in the story. I don't
think the majority of people that are tuning in on Sundays at this point, especially fear,
are that are like us on that. I think that they're like, when we recognize like, hey, I watched
that and that was enjoyable. I like zombie flicks. I like zombie shows, whatever, and that was a
cool visual, you know, when the Walker got killed in the pool with the stick. I think most people
are, like, satisfied with that. I really do, because that's the only thing I can think of, like, they did,
their ratings went down because the story sucks. Yeah. But it's steady because there's no other show
like that.
Right.
Besides Walking Dead,
I mean.
Right.
You know,
there's nothing else like that.
So there's nothing else to watch if that's what you're into.
You know,
it's very,
it's very niche or whatever,
but it's,
you know,
even the very niche have a very strong and rabid,
you know, fan base.
Yeah,
and that'll carry them.
That'll carry them for a while,
I'm sure.
Oh my gosh,
yes.
And I still,
I still think,
I want to say that they're going to,
you know,
they're going to merge the shows.
And I was,
I was hell bent on them doing it at the end of,
maybe at the beginning of season 11 for Walking Dead, right?
So maybe sometime in season 11 of Walking Dead,
fear merges with Walking Dead.
So you're still going to have one more season of fear
trying to figure out who they are,
where they're going.
Because originally, right, Morgan was going to people
that were trying to get it together, right?
Isn't it odd how,
they completely did a 180 away from that.
I know.
It was like that was the direction,
but I wonder if they were told to take a step back
because they wanted to maybe gauge.
I bet, you know,
they probably didn't know how well
Walking Dead was going to do
after Rick Grimes was gone.
You know what I mean?
They were like,
we need to put this into motion
because if we get a rapid loss of viewers,
right, we've got to bring them up.
Well, yeah, we're going to have to,
and that probably,
I bet you they were expecting it
and pricing it in early.
That's okay.
Well, now you're going to have,
have this season.
They're making a big deal.
I mean,
Michelle's gone, right?
This is it for her.
I don't know if she makes it.
I don't know when she goes away yet.
Is she the only one?
I mean, you lost Rick and
what's her face?
And she'll be begging for a job soon.
She'll be back soon enough.
Can it easily bring her back.
Oh, yeah.
And she's already written into the storyline
for the comics and stuff.
And they didn't say she died.
She just went away.
Yeah, she went away.
Okay, thanks.
And I don't know if that's what they're going to do with Michone.
Maybe Shone walks off into the sunset with her walker slaves like she came on to the Walking Dead.
And, you know, that's the end of Mishon until she can't make any more money from Marvel and comes back to Walking Dead.
Yeah, they'd probably actually be smart to do that.
Yeah, have her walk off just like she walked on with her walker slaves and back to I just got to be alone.
Yeah.
I got to be alone because she's going to have a, she's going to have a, she's going to have a,
have a, so maybe we lose the king this season, right? Because she was going to, she was going to start
having an affair with the king. So Carol might just tell her to get the hell of, Carol, this is taught,
now we're onto Walking Dead theory. Yeah, I know. How do we do that? How do we do that? The merge.
The merge brought us to Walking Dead. It's so much more fun, though, theorizing about the next season.
It is because I really do think that they're going to merge. It's got to be one thing sooner or later.
So I think you get season 10 of dead.
You get season six of fear.
And then in season 11 of Walking Dead and fear and Walking Dead come together to one Walking Dead.
Yeah, I like that timeline.
I think I bet you it's purely ratings based.
So I think they have it in motion if they need to pull that trigger.
You know, it'll be a big gauge after.
after this next season of walking.
So we have,
next episode is called Channel 5.
So that's the channel that the videos on.
So we'll get to see much more videos.
That's great.
Can't wait for that.
But there's two more episodes of this season for fear.
Two episodes left.
Thank God.
So we'll see how that works out for us.
Right.
And then we have the Walking Dead season 10 premiere,
October 6.
So you can join us,
myself, Jason, and Maximus
