Starting point is 00:00:00 Season 5, episode 8, the mid-season finale of Fear the Walking Dead, titled Is Anybody Out There, That makes this talking fear. Welcome to it. The episode on IMDB calls for it up against the clock. Morgan Grace and Alicia worked to buy time as Dory and Dwight race against the elements. Meanwhile, Sarah and Wendell get held from an unexpected source. Okay. Welcome to Fear, the Walking.
Starting point is 00:00:46 dead with myself, Jeff Fisher and Jason Butchrell. Of course, Maximus Fisher off at the scouting world jamboree. Mr. Important, Mr. Big Shot. Anyway, welcome to Talking Fear. Tonight's episode, I think, or I should say last night's episode, should have been titled, Okay, then. I went through the list again and looked at, as we go down the list of the happenings in the episode. And I felt like, every time something happened, I was like, okay, then.
Starting point is 00:01:14 Okay, then. I think I had a similar thought process, but I just didn't put okay then to it. And I put the A-Team theme to it. Every time something started happening that was unexpected, but just the nick of time, I heard, dun, dun, dun, da, dun, I was like, why is this people popping into my head? I was just, it was just strange. I know, we did find, we see a new bad guy group, right, with the, at the warehouse. Ooh, they look scary.
Starting point is 00:01:41 They look scary, huh? It's so scary. Because there's every inch of this dump. Okay, thank you. Shut up. I hope they weren't trying to sell them as being scary. I know. Because I was like, what?
Starting point is 00:01:51 It seemed like it. They look like a cheaper version of the garbage pill kids or whatever your father-in-law. Was that your father-in-law that called them that at the Walking Dead? Yes. I was like, so Garbage pill kids part two. Part two. Yeah. We had Alicia, I thought for sure, when a nuke lady took her muffler away as her weapon,
Starting point is 00:02:12 and I thought for sure she was going to go for the propeller. We still haven't had that yet. She shouldn't have that the entire episode, huh? Yeah. So can we just talk about how this began, Jeffie? Absolutely. Like, wasn't it the opening scene? I guess, yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:28 I guess. Pretty close. I don't care how much you complain about this episode. Because when you begin the episode with naked Alicia taking a shower, you're pretty much guaranteeing that this is going to be on the pantheon of all-time great shows. It was the only thing I thought of during the whole thing. I mean, we didn't, but it's sad.
Starting point is 00:02:47 It's sad because I'm watching it going, okay, well, at least we're going to get a pan down to the back, you know, the lower back, something. They could have been further for sure. We're going to see, you know, at least a leg come around the truck, something. None of it. It caught your attention, though, huh? You were like, oh, I can't wait. Are they going to show lower back?
Starting point is 00:03:05 Are they going to show a little bit of a leg? They're going to show? They're going to stop watching. I will admit I watched. I was still waiting for that 45 minutes into the show. I was like, maybe they're going to flashback During the commercial, I just rewound to see if I missed anything.
Starting point is 00:03:21 That's how you start a show. They're like, man, we've done like a crazy walker shot, maybe a monologue. Screw it. Alicia, get naked and get the shower. We're going to prove that you made it out alive. You're taking a shower, get naked. You've got to give up everything.
Starting point is 00:03:35 I'm on board. Yeah. Wait, did you say this was the mid-season finale? I did. Did you see anything? at all. We talked about it last week. Remember that it probably was going to be the midseason finale because we were into episode
Starting point is 00:03:48 eight. We had to count the amount of episodes to find out, but I didn't see any branding at all. No. Are they even trying at this point? I don't know. It certainly doesn't feel like it. It really doesn't. I mean, we had the midseason finale of this show.
Starting point is 00:04:02 And, you know, this past week has been Comic Con in San Diego, which is the big one. And it's all been Walking Dead. Fear. I know I saw some promotion of fear there, but it's all been walking dead. Wow, man. That's like, that's like something the producers should have caught. Like, they shouldn't have to caught something like that. Like, do you do a full-on campaign for your mid-season finale? It's so weird that they didn't do any of it. It should have been like two weeks ago. They should have started. Right. You know, some kind of push, promotional pitch. And they're off for three weeks. So. Oh, that's not. Well, that's not bad. Yeah. Three weeks.
Starting point is 00:04:38 comes back, they come back. It's usually at least a month. Yeah. At least. Yeah. But, you know, they come back for three weeks. And another thing, as long as we're on this, that's the midseason finale point. I'm still, it's midseason finale.
Starting point is 00:04:50 And we've talked a lot about the show that follows, usually follows Walking Dead. I'll say it out loud this one time talking dead with Chris Hardwick. And again, he was, you know, that he wasn't doing any of those during the regular season during the past six or seven episodes. and he said he was going to, they were going to bring it back for the midseason finale, which they did only after the show, after the second show. It was Fear aired, and then the other new show aired, and then Talking Dead. And he didn't have any of the, I mean, I forget who was on, but it certainly wasn't the stars of the show. We've got the second grip here to tell us about lighting setups.
Starting point is 00:05:33 They did us. The location manager there in Texas. Ned Wendell and a couple other people. But, I mean, I didn't even stick around for it. I was really, it was like, okay. This is disappointed. So, ma'am, as a head of craft services, what goes into the, whether you picked tacos that day? I tried to bring in something special for Morgan.
Starting point is 00:05:53 He prefers. Alicia knew she had her shower scene coming up, so she ate light for a week. That I would have been interested in. Thank you. You can fine with that. So, and so here's, as I go down the list, just a quick rundown of my title of the show. Okay, then. John and Dwight, looking for an automobile that has gasoline.
Starting point is 00:06:20 And, of course, they come up with the last car with the candy wrappers and one auto with the full tank of gas. Okay. Dun, dun, dun, da, dun. Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. How very convenient. The nuke truck crash. Come on, man. Okay, then.
Starting point is 00:06:38 Well, yeah, and that's like, all you did was just rub the front of the, like, quarter panel there with the bumper. Like, couldn't you just? Is this the first time we've run into Walker? She's all shook up backing away from Walker and getting away from them. And even still abandon the truck? Just pull forward a little bit and then turn the wheel and then go. That's a, it's this big monster truck. She's been driving around forever.
Starting point is 00:07:00 I know. We just leave it? Okay, then. It goes to the manufacture crisis we've been talking about. John and Dwight. have 15 to 20 miles to go, their car breaks down. And, you know, of course, John and June, I know that everybody is all impressed with the John and June love affair,
Starting point is 00:07:15 but okay then. And then we have the tree message to find Dwight's love's car. Okay, so I'm still stumped on that. That's why I texted you last night. I was like, what did I miss? There must have been a detail I missed. I don't. Was there an arrow that said, go this way, Dwight, to find my car?
Starting point is 00:07:33 I saw the ladder on the tree. I saw, you were here. then you must be still after me or something. And then John was like, well, I wonder how far her car would be. I don't know. I don't know the other side of the state because she drove kept driving. I mean, I don't know. Why would he have any idea?
Starting point is 00:07:50 I don't know. Was it back at the house and they just missed it back at the house? I don't know. That's the weirdest thing. It's almost like they cut a scene out and they, then they forgot to explain it verbally. Just the idea? Yeah. Right.
Starting point is 00:08:03 I don't know. That must be what happened. I don't know. And then the nuke three, I'll call it the nuke three, Morgan and Alicia and what's your face, Grace, the nuclear plant lady, they lead the herd to the plane? Yeah. What? What? Yeah, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:08:26 Yeah, so the siren stopped because of the explosion and then every walker immediately just turned back around. To go to them. Right. Like they had some kind of weird pull to go in that direction. direction to turn around and go that direction? I guess. Yeah, I don't know. That was really, really weird.
Starting point is 00:08:42 But tell you what, that scene, though, was kind of cool, though. I did feel the tension when I saw the, maybe it's just a kid growing up in the 80s, you know, where nuclear war was like an actual thing you worried about. Like, seeing that thing blow up. Yeah. I was like, I felt that actually. I was like, holy crap, man. Right.
Starting point is 00:08:58 This is about to get really bad. And just with the sirens and it was just eerie. I liked it. And then, of course, as the plane is trying to. to, you know, they're trying to load the plane and the walkers are getting carried away. We have John Wayne to the rescue. John and, John, do you?
Starting point is 00:09:15 Okay. All right. Okay, then. Then the plane just takes off missing the new cloud. Okay, then. Dude, the John Wayne to the rescue, though, I was like, I was expecting more. I was expecting them just to plow right through them all.
Starting point is 00:09:31 You know what I mean? But since he went all, like, Western, you know, six-shooter and out, yeah, and nailing them. I thought that was kind of cool, but... I know. Like Rick and the gang would have just driven straight through them and just taking them all out. That would have been the shot of them.
Starting point is 00:09:48 Yeah. You seen them flying. Right, exactly. You don't need that car anymore. So if you're used to be worried about the car. And why waste the ammo? Yeah. Plow through them in the car.
Starting point is 00:09:57 See, there would have been no struggle then of fighting them off to get out to the shot of them looking out the back of the plane with the walkers flying. Yeah, that'd be great. That's right. That's right, yeah. That would have been awesome. So then, I did like the, what do we do now? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:10:14 We keep looking for people to help and continue to live. Okay, I mean, okay, good, good. When was that at the end? That was in the plane. You know, as they take off when they asked Morgan, when Alicia said, what do we do now? And Morgan was like, well, he didn't know, I don't know. We continued to live and we continue to look for people that need. help but do it while living or something like that was the quote yeah and i've learned some good
Starting point is 00:10:41 meditation techniques or whatever yeah yeah then you talked about oh oh my gosh well we'll get to that because i i would have thrown her off the plane when she broke his staff when she stepped on his staff oh yeah that would have been what what happened to grace i don't know she tripped and fell out of the plane done the luck we got a little extra more room just you can spread out a little bit one less person in here so did his like sensei or master or whatever you want to call him Teacher. Was he the one that cut off his pointy stick or whatever before or something? Or who did that?
Starting point is 00:11:13 Remember because he looked at it like he goes, this has happened before. Remember that? Yeah. No, I mean, she took it, right? She took it from him. She took it and snapped off. Then he took it back. Then he got it back and she said it would be okay.
Starting point is 00:11:29 And then on the plane she stands up out of the blue and breaks it. Okay. And she goes, did I do something wrong? And he goes, no, it's just that. Yeah. It's my freaking staff. Can you fly? Because I'm pushing you out of this plane right now.
Starting point is 00:11:40 Right. What do you think you're doing? But instead he had this Zen moment, you know, where he is reflecting and he goes, this has happened before. I was like, when did it happen before? Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. I'm not sure.
Starting point is 00:11:51 I'm not sure about that unless was the original one broken and this is a newer one, but I thought that was the original one, right? That's the one he's had all along. I think so. From the Sunside Jedi Master. Right, right. From Yoda. The guy that you don't like.
Starting point is 00:12:04 The show that you don't like, which was a great show. awful. And if they have a part two with him and Alicia doing the same damn thing. I know. Some of the previews showed him teaching Alicia. Yeah. Going into the Zen Masters. Stop! Watch. It'll be an entire episode, Jeffie.
Starting point is 00:12:19 An entire episode. Of them being Zen Masters? Yes. And getting her life right, getting her head straight. Yep. When it would be just as simple for her to take a propeller and drag it around. Which is what I want. I want the propeller.
Starting point is 00:12:30 I want Alicia carrying the freaking propeller. I want to see Alicia going through a building, dragging it on the ground, the sound, bringing in walkers and killing them all, it's what I want. I'm on board of that. I want that scene now. I'm on board. And then,
Starting point is 00:12:45 then we had the John and June, marry me with the candy wrapper ring. Okay, then. Okay. So, at such a beautiful moment, stop it. Yeah, whatever. And then,
Starting point is 00:12:59 Daniel, who truck driver lady, Dan the man, I'm over her little nicknames, too, the way. No. Mo-mo. Yeah, over that.
Starting point is 00:13:09 Okay. But everybody, you know, she, I guess she's, you know, the hip truck driver. But, uh, Daniel brings the Christmas lights for the runway. Yeah. Love that. Dan the man. So how did he get there? If he can drive there, why does everyone else have to take a plane?
Starting point is 00:13:25 Well, you know, Jason, that's a good question. Because as we, as we go down by notes, we'll get to the end when, uh, warehouse boy, power boy, power plant boy shows up. and he drove there as well and he got there not long after they landed so why did we need the plane I really don't I mean and you're right with Dan the man
Starting point is 00:13:53 Daniel literally came I heard you on the radio I heard you on the radio I came to help power plant boy knew where they were going and drives there and tries to talk them into joining him to find the magic map of where gasoline is. Okay. Then why did we go through all this struggle with the plane?
Starting point is 00:14:16 It's so confusing. So apparently, so where Daniel's warehouse is, where they were all linked up to, apparently the roads to that warehouse are fine. But then it's, I guess it's after that warehouse are the mountains. And that's what was knocked out from the hurricane. So then they couldn't go over the mountains without taking a plane. So Daniel can't go to, like where the nuclear site is, but he can drive back to. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:14:42 I guess. I don't know. It doesn't, it makes like zero sense to me where we're at as far as geography-wise. Because we, and we've talked about it before, I know it's a mystical land. I got it. Okay. I'll play along. But there also has to be some structure, right?
Starting point is 00:14:58 I mean, we had two vehicles show up to where they flew the plane to, and we flew the plane because we couldn't drive. I don't understand. It doesn't equal out. You ain't going to find an answer for me. I don't know. It just doesn't equal out. I really don't know.
Starting point is 00:15:15 That's the only thing that I can come up with is somehow they keep on talking about the hurricane knocking out the roads, which I'm assuming are at the mountains. There's very rarely hurricanes that cause that much damage once they get so far inland. My friend, look around. Do you have any? I'm like, how far did this hurricane get? into the mainland. I mean, if you want to talk hurricanes for a while, I'll be happy to talk hurricanes. Mountains break up hurricanes.
Starting point is 00:15:41 That's what happens. Yeah, right. That's why a lot of times when Cuba gets hit with hurricanes, Cuba has the mountainous area. And they're happy when the storms hit the mountainous area because it breaks them up and weakens them up a little bit. Yeah. But what do I know? But what would a hurricane do to mountain roads? It would make them wet.
Starting point is 00:15:57 Right. And then that's about it. So there you go. Okay, my friend, you know what damage water does? This season is so weak. It's just I don't understand. I really don't. I'm really confused on the whereabouts.
Starting point is 00:16:10 It just, I want to, I want to feel like it's like I'm part of it. And I liked a number of things that happened. You know, I joke around about the okay then. But of course you can do that with any of these dead shows. Sure. Because that's, we have to, you have to make believe a little bit. I understand. That's why I like it.
Starting point is 00:16:31 That's why you like it. That's why we all like it. but there's got to be some kind of, some kind of structure, right? Some kind of realization that we can't, we can't get there from here unless we have an airplane, but now two people show up to where the plane landed the way they all could have gone.
Starting point is 00:16:55 Yeah. It just doesn't make any sense. There's a fine line between your suspension of disbelief on some of these shows, which you have to have because it's a fiction show. and the nature of the stuff it's dealing with. But there's a, once you cross that fine line, then your audience thinks,
Starting point is 00:17:12 well, these showrunners think we're stupid. Like, you know, they think we're stupid. Because what the showrunners are just saying, oh, they're not going to worry about piece,
Starting point is 00:17:19 you know, explaining why that happened or, you know, explaining how they were led to this decision or why they have to do certain things. Right. They're too stupid. So don't worry about it.
Starting point is 00:17:31 Don't worry little heads about it. It's just watch the show. Just watch the show. And now we feel like you're treating us like kindergarteners because we're like, wait a minute, none of this makes sense. And that's what they're doing. I will say that I did find, I found it fascinating that, you know, again, as we started, this was the mid-season finale.
Starting point is 00:17:49 And, man, it was just, it wasn't talked about at all. It wasn't, hey, mid-season finale. It wasn't a great thing where, you know, you need to watch. It was just over. We'll be back in three weeks. Move on. They've never not promoted the midseason finale on either show.
Starting point is 00:18:08 Right. It's always heavily promoted at least two weeks in advance. I mean, maybe they were trying to figure out that it was, you know, they're trying to see how it went without promoting it. Maybe that was a plan,
Starting point is 00:18:22 you know, a back, you know, a boardroom plan of look, we're just not going to promote it. It's just going to be the midseason. We'll see how the ratings go. We'll see what happens. I don't know. I think it reflects just how, I think they probably have less
Starting point is 00:18:33 people working on it now. Their interest has died down. You know what I mean? They're like, oh my God, we have to create a whole different graphics package for a midseason finale. You know what I mean? Like, you, you work at a media organization with. We're busy. We're busy working on Walking Dead right now. We can't be bothered with fear. Right. And then also they're like, well, do we spend money on this? How much is it costs? We're going to have to hire that freelancer again? Oh my gosh. You got so much money. No, let's just cut it and just, they know, you know. They're not too stupid enough to know this is the mid-season finale, but they're too stupid to question anything that happens in the show. Yeah, this is a perfect example of just gauging their interest, I think, right now on it.
Starting point is 00:19:14 They don't really care, I don't think. So strange. So strange. Okay, so fear will be back in three weeks. And as I said, you know, they were all at the Comic-Con in San Diego this past week, week and a half, however long it was. And I know fear was there, but, man, it was all walking dead. It was all walking dead. We got the new Walking Dead trailer released for season 10.
Starting point is 00:19:36 We found out for sure it was Michone's last season, this coming season. Rick isn't going to direct any of the episodes. He was supposed to direct some. He's too busy. He's too busy just, you know, hanging out. And we're going to decide what the movies are like. I guess that's what we're probably focused on. That's where the money's going, right?
Starting point is 00:19:58 The money's got to go into dead and the movies. so fear gets shot. This is another example also of where the shows need to come together, right? After 10 and this season is done, then fear can join with Walking Dead. They can meet up. They're on the other side of the mountains. We can meet up and make it one show and we don't have to worry about, you know, then we just have one budget.
Starting point is 00:20:24 We don't have two or three budgets to worry about. You know what I would do, Jeffrey, if I was them. I was thinking about this last night. I was thinking about this when I was thinking that when Alicia was in the shower and I was like, oh, they're so going to kill off Alicia. That's not what I was thinking about. But go ahead. Anyway. So seriously, I was thinking, well, I was actually thinking about this before the shower scene.
Starting point is 00:20:45 Because I was thinking like, you know what? What if they kill off Alicia? That's another one of their main characters. The last of the old. It's just the last of the originals. Yeah. So I was like, you know what they should do so they can keep costs down? They should just hire no-name actors.
Starting point is 00:20:58 Up and coming, you know, they're good. still good actors, but then have each season independent of the others. So it doesn't follow the same timeline. You just know that the show, it's just in the Walking Dead world. And you can like concentrate on not how, because that's hard to link all these seasons together. Yeah. They would work better isolated. Each season would be just a new series.
Starting point is 00:21:21 Exactly. That's not a bad idea, actually. New cast. New cast. And, you know, they're fighting to survive. It's fear of the walking day. Right. And then you could, you could say, you could have.
Starting point is 00:21:29 have one in the city, which is what we originally started watching the show for. This season, this season, we're in Wisconsin, and next season we're in Florida. And this season we're here. We could take it anywhere. Yeah. And you hire so many damn British actors. We could have a season in freaking UK or something. Hire your own actors.
Starting point is 00:21:45 Well, they already signed the deal for China, right? Walking Dead in China. Okay. I mean, you know what else pisses me off, Jeffrey? The pandering to China on all this. crap because they have like 17 gazillion people. I know. They feel like they have to pander.
Starting point is 00:22:04 And they do. Did you see? The movie theaters all do too. This is on a especially. The film all does too. On that there was like, did you see the trailer for the new Top Gun? Talking of Maverick. I knew that's where you were going to go.
Starting point is 00:22:15 You knew it? I knew because the big, the coat was the jacket. Yeah. But that's so what they do. I know. I actually did see. I actually watched Tom on Conan when they were, because Conan spent the week at Comic Con.
Starting point is 00:22:28 and Cruz was on his show, which was, I mean, it's a good get for Conan. Well, Tom Cruise. And there's not a lot of us that can look that good over the years, Tom and that myself.
Starting point is 00:22:42 But anyway, you do have that one thing in common. That's weird. We have that one thing in common. Tom and I, same thing. I die. But he saw, you know, I saw the trailer,
Starting point is 00:22:53 and it was all fun. That's why I saw the trailer. The next day I read about the jacket. So go ahead. It was, well, it's like, before, like, his bomber or flight jacket had like a, there was like a, I don't know. It was like, it was like a patch, like a military patch. Yeah, his got his patches. One of them was Vietnam, right?
Starting point is 00:23:08 And one of them was a Taiwan flag. And so now the new one. The new one just took off the Taiwan flag or something like that. And it has a Chinese emblem on it. Something like that. I mean, I could open it up. The point was they took off like two things off of that thing that they thought were going to be offensive to China. And then they, the studio hasn't made an announcement.
Starting point is 00:23:27 on that, but that's so what they did. No, because the insiders all said that, oh, that's just the way it is. It's evolved. It's the way, the way that he's evolved. No way. No way. That's stupid. That's like, what was the same thing with like the new karate kid remake with like Will Smith's son?
Starting point is 00:23:43 And like they like were very, they had to be very careful on what that, like they took scenes out of the one that showed in China. Specifically like where the kids were being a bully to him. Right. They were like, oh, we were making it look like the Chinese kids are, you know, are mean, you know, to the American. So they cut a lot of those scenes. Oh, wow. I don't know what I remember that. Just to pander to China.
Starting point is 00:24:02 I'm sick of that crap, man. I'm so sick of it. I'm not going to watch no walking dead in China because it's going to be the same bull crap. It's going to have all these politics, all this stuff and they're mixed in watering. They already have a problem with a story not being great because they're away from the original content. Imagine with that with the restrictions of everything the Chinese government's going to put on.
Starting point is 00:24:21 Right. Yeah, they won't be able to, you know, we can't allow that to have. Screw that. Wow. Screw that. All right then. Yeah. This is talking fear.
Starting point is 00:24:32 We'll be back in three weeks as a fear. Fear comes back after their mid-season finale, which I'm, I don't, looking ahead, I don't know that I'm less excited. Well, yes, I mean, I am less excited than the beginning of the season. and I was reminded when I saw the season 10 trailer of Walking Dead, it looks really good. And someone quickly reminded me on Twitter that, yeah, that's what we thought about Fear Team. Yeah, for real. So thank you for keeping me grounded on that. I really appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:25:09 And thanks for listening to Fear the Walking Dead with myself and Jason Butchell. Make sure you subscribe and download Chewing the Fat, which is where this show gets uploaded to. And it's all for free, just for you. Chewing the Fat with Jeff Fisher. and talking fear. We'll be back in three weeks. See you, life.
