Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, Chicks in the Office listeners. You can find every episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or YouTube. Prime members can listen ad free on Amazon Music. This is state of emergency. What's up, everyone? It's Chicks in the Office with Ria and Fran, giving you that Friday energy on a Wednesday. How's everyone doing today? How's the week going?
Starting point is 00:00:31 How's everyone's vibe? Let me tell you something. I feel like I have talked to you to way too much already this week. I feel the same way. I feel like we've been together quite literally every second of the day. And quite frankly, I'm sick of the both of you. So I'm going to the death test tomorrow and I won't be in. Okay?
Starting point is 00:00:49 I will not be in. I will not be in this office tomorrow because I will be at the dentist. Are you nervous? Are you excited? I'm really excited. I was making you nervous earlier. Yeah. What exactly is happening?
Starting point is 00:01:02 They're going to clean my teeth first, which I'm very nervous. I'm more nervous about the cleaning. Yeah. Then the cavity filling. Yeah. Because I feel like my gums are going to bleed like a motherfucker. Like I feel like my mouth. No.
Starting point is 00:01:13 Because the most. Boy, no, you walked right into that one. No one's been walking himself into a lot of things out of the shows. I was just going to say the most annoying part is when they like have to clamp your mouth open and then your jaws was like. You know, no. No, what I'm worried about is that I've been having this like throat breathing problem lately. That it's just in my head. We're all falling.
Starting point is 00:01:42 part. It's literally in my head and it happened to be at the dentist last time I was there when they were doing something and I was like like I was like oh my god I can't breathe but I could breathe perfectly fine. No, I'm really nervous about the cleaning aspect because the the dentist, the guy was like you need to get, people hate when we talk about the dentist so I don't know why I'm still going on about this but I'll make it short. He said we need to clean your teeth before we put the cavities in because if we put the cavities in the cavity fillings in and you start bleeding they're white. It's going to be a problem. But I'm going to bleed like a bitch when. when they clean my teeth.
Starting point is 00:02:13 Yeah. Because my teeth bleed when I brush them. But they're used to that. Every night. Every day. Not every day. I think everybody's teeth bleeds when they're clean. I'm a hard brush though.
Starting point is 00:02:25 Yeah. Like I think that's just part of the course. Yeah. All right. I think I have a, I think I have an infected tear duct or something. An infected tear. You know what?
Starting point is 00:02:35 I don't know. I got, I got something going on. There is something going on. My outer. I know. I didn't put any eye makeup on today for that reason. Well, you're beautiful.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Thank you. My outer, the outer corner of my left eye, since I woke up this morning, it hurts. Like, it feels bruised. So there's not really visibly anything there. Not going to lie, there is a little something there. Like over here? In the corner, don't put your hand. Yeah, sorry, sorry.
Starting point is 00:03:00 I know. I shouldn't talk. Maybe you were sleeping on it. Give me your hand. You know, we were up late recording. Bad, bad. I think we were up late recording and I was rubbing. this eye a lot. It's a little red. So I think I might have, I think I may have irritated.
Starting point is 00:03:17 That's not pink eye. Pink eye, I wouldn't not have come into the office. And you would know. That's not pink eyes. This is like, I've never had this feeling before. You may have a stye. But like a stye, yes, but a stye you like can see. Stai. No. I've had styes that I couldn't see. Really? Yeah. What if you had an eyelash in your eye? Anytime I've gotten a stye before it was like a little bulb on like my eye. Sometimes it just in the inside, you can't even see it. Well, that could be it too. But I every time I blink it hurts well oh god
Starting point is 00:03:46 wishing for the best yeah no what's going on with you nothing really boring like like health wise no just in life anything anything anything anything anything nothing I really I have nothing going on I don't know what to tell you I don't know what to tell you I'm trying to think nothing damn kind of at that point in the summer I feel like it's like
Starting point is 00:04:07 summer's like I don't even want to talk about it summer's like basically over it's so depressing this summer went by So fast. And all my weekends are booked up. So fast. Which for the next until September. I know. And that makes it go by even faster. When you have set plans, you're like, fuck.
Starting point is 00:04:23 I know. I don't even have a time to just sit back. Like all of a sudden it's fucking Labor Day weekend. How are we got here? Yeah. What are you doing for Labor Day weekend? Blanked. I think I'm home.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Oh, nice. I think. I don't have any plans. Oh. You want to hang out? Maybe. We haven't hung out once this summer. We've been so busy.
Starting point is 00:04:42 We have, me and you have not hung out since February. That's been a lot. Maybe. Like, honestly, I don't think we've done anything together that hasn't been work-related. We're not even friends, everybody. And just in case you guys were wondering, we were really friends, we're not. We hate each other. The moment of truth.
Starting point is 00:04:58 We despise each other. Oh, my Lord. Just trying to drum something up. Just create something. Yeah. I pulled the trick. I hate you. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:07 On what? On John's Brothers Vegas tickets. Yeah. You didn't even ask me to go. Would you have wanted to go? I would want to go to Vegas. Vegas, baby. And to a Jones Brothers show?
Starting point is 00:05:20 You act like I hate the Jonas Brothers. I love that. But I feel like I've wanted you to go to a couple shows. Yeah, but it's not Vegas. Yeah, I guess that's fair. Well, I'm shit out of luck now. Yeah, but I had to get two tickets for me and Claire. And you didn't invite me.
Starting point is 00:05:35 And it was, it was, maybe we do hate each other. Yeah, I hate you. I do. You didn't even. ask me to go to Vegas. It's crazy. Are you going to invite me to your birthday this year? I don't even think I'm having a party. What? You have one every year. I know. I look forward to it every year. Believe me, I know. Why? I have a wedding every weekend. Are you kidding me? Every weekend I have anything for your birthday this year? Maybe like, maybe like a dinner or something during the week. I can't do like a bar thing,
Starting point is 00:06:03 which I always do, but I can't. Every year since I've known you, you've done a bar thing. I know. And every weekend is... Things are really changing. Every weekend in September. I I have a wedding. She's not telling you. Kind of feels that way. No, I swear to God. I have a wedding every weekend at September. I don't have time for a birthday party.
Starting point is 00:06:21 I'm sick. And there are weddings that I have to, like, travel to, so it's not like I can do it. Have you thought about a present? I've been thinking hard about a present. I'm not going to lie. I haven't. We're still, like, we're still a month. No, I've been thinking hard.
Starting point is 00:06:35 My birthday is until September. We're, yeah, we're approaching probably about almost exactly a month away this weekend. I hung up. Oh, you hung it up? Yeah, over my bed at home. I love that. Yeah, I'll send you a picture. I'm going to go home tonight.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Yeah, it looks great. My mom was like, thank God we could take down this thing that you've had it up in your room since high school. We could replace it with something nice. Everyone was happy about it. Good. But I have been thinking about your gift because you did such a great thing for my birthday that I'm like, fuck. I now have to live up to it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Maybe that was the whole reason. But I did get you a really good gift with that Jones Blas jacket. So it's like, it's not like I've never gotten you a little. really good gift. I do love that Drones Brothers jacket and I will be bringing that to Vegas. Right.
Starting point is 00:07:17 It's like it's not like I've never showed out for her birthday before. No, I will be bringing that. I have. I will be bringing that to Vegas. I do have a little like I don't know what's going on with them.
Starting point is 00:07:27 The boys. The brothers. I'm just, I'm confused on if there's no music coming out. No, it has nothing to do with me. Although maybe I would love those answers too. I'm confused about how they feel about you. I'm confused.
Starting point is 00:07:42 about how I feel about you. The music, there hasn't really been any new music in a long time. And then they just keep throwing these Vegas shows. Money grab. That just come out of nowhere. I'm like, hey, I'm going. I felt I had so much foam out for the last Vegas shows. There was no way I wasn't going to do this one.
Starting point is 00:08:03 Wait, where in Vegas are they playing? They're at the Dolby Live Theater in Vegas. I've never been to Vegas. I have no idea where that is. No, just wondering. So it's, but it's, but it's three days in November. And it's just like randomly on Monday they just posted, we're doing three more shows in November. And it's like, what's, is there a new album, a single?
Starting point is 00:08:25 Question. Anything? Bueller. Bueller. Yes. Why don't you make this a little birthday trip? I don't have to go to the show. A little birthday trip?
Starting point is 00:08:36 Yeah, why don't you make this little birthday trip? I don't have to go to the show, but like, can we party a little bit in Vegas? To celebrate my birthday in November? Yeah, it's only a month after. That's two months after. It's about a month and a half. It's pushing it. Okay.
Starting point is 00:08:48 It's pushing it. Fine. I have the worst fucking ideas ever. Shut up. No, no, no. I'm happy to go. I'm happy to go to Vegas for a silly reason. I'm clearly not wanted.
Starting point is 00:08:58 Fran doesn't want to go to concerts with you. We've already talked about this. But I'm saying I won't even go to the concert. I'll just go to Vegas to hang. You just want to gamble. Let's do that. It's very clear that she doesn't want me there. Let's do that.
Starting point is 00:09:09 Do you sense this? Oh my God. Absolutely not. Why don't... Sure, book your ticket. Yeah, go. Why don't we do... I've never been to Vegas. I don't know what to do.
Starting point is 00:09:19 You go to the casinos. You go to the gable, you go to the clubs. Honestly, the only time I've ever been to Vegas, I was in fifth grade. So, yeah. So we really have no actual adult Vegas experience. My parents have gone every year of their life. That's true. It's not hard to navigate.
Starting point is 00:09:34 It's a strip. Everything's there. Yeah. Have you been to Vegas? For my 21st birthday, yeah. You went to Vegas for your 24th. birthday. This guy.
Starting point is 00:09:42 This guy. I was in LA already, so we just drove up. Holy shit. He had the big, you're in Dixie DeMalio. Well, damn. Is that what she did? Yes, she did. Big birthday bash.
Starting point is 00:09:52 There was one of the headlines this weekend. Holy moly. Take a look inside of Dixie Jamilio's big. 21st birthday bash in Vegas. Holy moly, who'd have thought? Yeah. Not me. The hard rock.
Starting point is 00:10:01 That's sick. That's amazing. I haven't booked any accommodations or any travel. So if people have a favorite place in Vegas. Or if somebody wants to hook her up with free rooms or a big suite that I could stay in. That would actually be so fun. I still think about that Atlantic City weekend that we had.
Starting point is 00:10:19 It was so much fun. Yeah, it was. When we said that sweet, the Borgana. It was awesome. That was so much fun. And we stayed in that presidential suite. Yeah, we were like, what the fuck are we doing? We had no business being there.
Starting point is 00:10:30 That was my first cigarette. Yeah, you did smoke your first cigarette. Me and Kelly Kiggs. Got me hooked. Not something I should be proud of saying. That was a great time. Yeah. Yeah, maybe you would only be elevated.
Starting point is 00:10:41 The concert's on a Thursday night, so maybe we just stay through the weekend. Yeah, who knows, if I ever get in formal invite over text message. A written, would I get in form? This doesn't feel real to me. Okay. I'll craft an invite. Maybe I'll send you a paperless post. Don't do it tonight, though.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Okay. That feels fake. I'm just going to randomly send you a paperless post invitation, a formal invitation. Do not do it. To eventually invite you and then you're going to be, ah, I can't go. I feel like that happens every time I get lazy It's more just laziness
Starting point is 00:11:14 My mom's so mad at her Okay well we're not gonna go down this path We're not going down this path of the of the vineyard thing Or not Maybe we go in October Oh no, they'll be in Florida To Florida I'm gonna see your parents
Starting point is 00:11:27 To Florida with or without you You'll see them in Florida You don't gotta come but I'll be there You don't want you there I have People are going to think of being serious. I have five weddings in September and October. That's awful.
Starting point is 00:11:45 Yeah. Now, I'm going to shoot you straight. Yeah. That's awful. I have a week of literally every weekend in September after Labor Day and then two weekends in October. Friends voices on Monday are going to be non-existent between a wedding and then the games. Yeah. Oh.
Starting point is 00:12:03 We might have to hire a new home. most. I've been fired. I've been fired just on Mondays. Just solo shows. Just on Mondays. I don't even know what would come out of my mouth. I can't do a solo show. It would be really dangerous. All right. Um, like, imagine me and Noah doing a show together, the things we would say and it would cause a problem. You'd have no anchor. We wouldn't. Um, okay. Let's get into the. Let's, let's, let's do it. Let's get into this thing. We have a great interview today.
Starting point is 00:12:37 Yeah, we do. With Jeanette McCurdy talking about her new memoir. I'm glad my mom, dad. If you have not read it, read it. It's really, really good. I read it in a day. It was awesome. I said to Fran, I was like, this is the most interesting memoir we have ever been sent.
Starting point is 00:12:51 Wow. By far. A lot of people have come on the show with memoirs. And you know what? I have no problem saying that hers is by far the most interesting. And I just also think. Sorry, Matt James. It beats Matt James.
Starting point is 00:13:02 Like, everybody. By far. Everybody writes We talk about it with Jeanette But hers is stylistically really really cool It's super unique Unlike any other memoir I've read So
Starting point is 00:13:12 And super honest Unlike any other memoir So I would personally Like it was very very good He talked a lot about how he was I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry
Starting point is 00:13:29 Yeah he's like I gotta cut it Because there's no context to the joke now Do it for you guys All right Okay Sorry All right, let's get into the topics. We're going to be talking about Florence Pugh
Starting point is 00:13:40 discussing her breakup with Zach Braff and also the press around Don't Worry, Darling. Bama Rush, it's confirmed that there will be an HBO documentary about that. And we're just going to be talking about what MGK's been up to these past. Ria just wants to talk shit, really. I can't stand him. All right, and we also have a great interview with Jeanette McCurdy.
Starting point is 00:14:01 So let's get into it, starting off with Florence Pugh. Lots of talk about comments. Concerts coming up. Harry Stiles, a lot of shows at MSG, Jonas Brothers, you know, the whole thing. Everybody's got a concert. Everybody's got a show. Yep. You can either even head up a baseball game, which I'm going to do tonight. There are so many tickets that you can get to different events. And game time is the way to go. Game time is the ticketing app that makes it easier than ever to score last minute deals on tickets to sports, concerts, and shows. And they guarantee the lowest price, which is super important. They crack the code on how to get deals on last minute tickets. The best part is you get $20 off your first purchase right now. If you download the GameTime app, go to the account tab to create a login and redeem code chicks for $20 off your first purchase. For $20 off your first purchase terms do apply. Once again, download the GameTime app. Go to the account tab to create a login and redeem code chicks for $20 off your first purchase.
Starting point is 00:14:56 Download Game Time last minute tickets, lowest prices guaranteed. So it has been confirmed Florence Pugh and Zach Braff. They have split up. I think there, for some reason, has been conversation around this couple on whether or not they were still together or broken up. I don't know why, but a lot of people were talking about it. I think it also has to do with the fact that there were rumors about her hooking up with Harry Stiles and then being mad that Harris-Siles then went to Olivia Wilde. And all the press around, don't worry, darling. Therefore, conversations about their relationship.
Starting point is 00:15:27 But they're Donzo. Yeah, they're kaput. They have called to quits. Yeah. Florence she's um all the cover of Harper's Bazaar this month September and they did there's been rumors because it has been like are they together are they not together they have kept it's quiet for a long time it's we're all the way in August now and it's she did say that they had broken up earlier in the year I think maybe I don't know if she she might not have
Starting point is 00:15:57 actually said a time she said oh so you're just making things up yeah yeah yeah well I'm gonna read what you said we've been trying to do this seven separation without the world knowing because it's been a relationship that everybody has an opinion on. We just felt something like this would really do us the benefit of not having millions of people telling us how happy they are that we're not together. So we've done that. I automatically get a lumpy throat when I talk about it. That makes sense. That's it. She so clearly doesn't like this movie. Like I fully believe all the rumors now. Yeah, I'm kind of buying into the rumors as well. not skinny but not fat
Starting point is 00:16:32 posted about how in all her past times that she has promoted a film there's a very lengthy caption and discussion about the movie and then with Don't worry darling it was just like one little line and then it was just like the trailer for the movie
Starting point is 00:16:50 she also talked about how she doesn't like the conversation around the movie being all about hair style sex scenes and her I think that she takes she is an Actor. I think she takes... Artis. Yeah, I think she takes that very seriously. And I don't think she likes that this has now been knocked down to what probably she would qualify as, like, teeny bopper fans of Harry Styles, like, freaking out over the clips of...
Starting point is 00:17:19 You don't have to see that coming a little bit. Yeah, but I don't know if she, like, really understood the extent of it. And I also think this, because of the movie and because of Olivia and Harry's relationship now, it has put so much interest in the movie and interest in their own lives that I think she's pissed off. That it's like, it's becoming more about Harry and Olivia's relationship and those things than the actual movie. She said, she said like talking about paparazzi and privacy and things like that and relationships. she said we haven't signed up for a reality show. She clearly does not like the speculation and all those things
Starting point is 00:18:05 and having to share too much. And doing a movie like this where now these two are together, when she decided to do this movie, Harry and Olivia, while we're not together. So it's taken on a life of its own with them now being in a relationship
Starting point is 00:18:22 that she probably was like, I didn't sign up for this shit. Although maybe she hooked up with Harry at the beginning And maybe that's also like that theory That was more fun It's probably the one The first one Yeah
Starting point is 00:18:33 But the theory that her and Harry were hooking up And then he went to Olivia Wilder's just a little bit more fun Yeah no definitely is Definitely juicier Either way It's probably not Here's a thing though You think it's not that deep right
Starting point is 00:18:47 You probably that's probably not that deep But then you think about your own life And you're like You know like we talk so Like people talk so much shit about people. And like, it's just like you talk so in depth about other things and people and things happening in your own life and whatever. And you're like, she probably is talking about Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde being together. Right.
Starting point is 00:19:08 Like that is probably happening. And she's probably pissed about it a little bit. And she sees all the headlines. The movie comes out so soon. They're going to have to start doing press. Are they going to do press paired? Are they going to do it alone? Is Olivia going to do it with them?
Starting point is 00:19:19 Is Olivia going to stand in between them and her arms around them? If you were her and you see all these heads. deadlines coming up because that's like the whole what's being talked about you would if it wasn't true you would just be like this is ridiculous it's not true right right she hasn't said she's no but she doesn't really address that's like she doesn't but wouldn't she want to be like this isn't true no i don't hate that you well you what celebrity does that though when there's a story about them that's not true in the press not everybody just outright comes out and says it i guess but i feel like when do we ever you know we talk about rumors all the time a list
Starting point is 00:19:54 Celebrities don't Don't say Ah, that Us Weekly story was wrong. I guess, but I feel like this is taking away from the movie now. I don't think so. I honestly,
Starting point is 00:20:06 I actually don't think so. I don't think anything is making people more interested in seeing the movie, but that could also be, but I can see is not interested in that. The conversation is Florence Pugh is the star of the film, but she's not being treated like the star of the film right now. Yeah. Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles'
Starting point is 00:20:19 Sal's relationships being treated like star of the film. Yeah, she said, Florence Pugh is the star of the film. film. Yeah. Over Harry Stiles. This movie, she is the No, I know she's the lead, but like when you're in a movie with Harris Diles, like he's... No, no, but she is the lead. Let me tell you something right now. Doesn't matter about star power.
Starting point is 00:20:36 You are the trolls that she's addressing in this. I know, but we're not talking about who's the star in real life. We're talking about in the movie. Who is the lead in the movie? It's Florence Pugh. Yeah, her name is the top of course. She has more dialogue than Harry Seiles. I got to boil it down for you. I know. I don't think you do.
Starting point is 00:20:56 Yes, I do. I know what you're saying. But obviously, Harry Styles is going to be the talk of everything. And he's the star, like, he's the reason why most people are going to see this movie. No. Yes. I mean, a lot of people are going to see it because of him, but people would see this movie without Harry Styles in it. You put, what's his face?
Starting point is 00:21:12 Is Chris Pine is the other guy? Or no, it's Chris Pine? You put Chris Pine in the spot that Harry Styles is in. People are still seeing this movie. Not nearly as much. Do you put, like, Noah Centenio in Harry Styles' role? they're going to, people would go see it. It's an interesting movie.
Starting point is 00:21:25 You are right. There are very... More people will see it with Harry Styles. There are very young Harry Styles fans that probably will want to see this movie. I hope their parents don't let him. I'm pretty sure this is a rated R movie. Like, I think it's pretty sexual too.
Starting point is 00:21:37 Like, she said when it's reduced to your sex scenes or to watch the most famous man in the world go down on someone. It's not why we do it. It's not why I'm in this industry. Like, she feels like the... fans have reduced this movie to 10 second clips from trailers and things like that.
Starting point is 00:21:59 And she's like, that's not why I did this movie. That's not why I made this movie. It says, Florence acknowledged her Harper's Bazaar that she recognizes why people would gravitate or talking about the film's more risque moments when they involve, quote, the most famous pop star in the world. However, she added, that's not just what I'm going to be discussing because this movie is bigger and better than that and the people who made it are bigger and better than that. So it's like she would just like everyone to be, to acknowledge that it's not just, you don't
Starting point is 00:22:30 reduce the movie to this one, these sexual scenes and that's it. There's a bigger story being told in the movie. But it also happens like even in Top Gun. It just happened with Mouse. Like a lot of people are like, oh, the beach scene most. Like, it happens with every star in movie. Just the way it goes. But I just want Florence to know as a podcast.
Starting point is 00:22:50 we will be looking at the film as a whole. She takes her craft very seriously and therefore we shall take the movie very seriously. But are we following along to see what happens when they start to impress? Oh, yeah, I am. What's the date of this, the release? The movie comes out September.
Starting point is 00:23:07 Is it getting good reviews, by the way? September 23rd. 23rd. Well, perfect. You're not having a birthday party, so no, I'm not. I'll be able to go. I'll be at a wedding. Theater.
Starting point is 00:23:20 Friend Tennessee like three months later. Did you even watch Elvis yet? It's on HBO Max. No. Guys, I haven't had the time. It is a three hour film. Yeah, I just, I haven't had the time. It feels like 30 hours too.
Starting point is 00:23:33 Yeah. I, I, there's a lot of, I'm still, it's the same list movies I still haven't seen. Anyways. Anyway, the movie is out soon. finally so we will all be able to watch it but yeah I like I'm we need the press I'm just interested because it's coming out basically
Starting point is 00:23:55 right as Harry finishes all of his MSG shows so leading up to press like is he going to be doing a lot of press in New York doesn't he going to be doing it with Olivia you can be doing it with Olivia Olivia will probably be doing press on her own but it would be normal for Florence and Harry
Starting point is 00:24:12 to be doing press together if they don't usually the director does interviews with the Tuesday stars, I feel like. Sometimes, but not all the time. Not always. Can I say the most true thing Harry Styles has ever said? Yeah. And I quote, from his song Kiwi, Holland Tunnel for a nose is always backed up. The Holland Tunnel is always backed up. There is no truer statement than that. Yeah. He knows what's, he knows. I was waiting. What's up? No, no. The Holland Tunnel, I am in a lot these days. And my God,
Starting point is 00:24:48 that thing is quite literally always backed up. He is so right about that. He hit the nail on that. Oh, boy. I wonder, I'm very interested to see what his New York life is going to be like since he's going to be here for like a month. Hopefully he ain't traveling to Jersey because that Holland Tunnel
Starting point is 00:25:03 is not smooth at all. So, yeah, we're almost there. Very specific New York traffic decisions. It's in one of his songs. It is. Imagine if he came in here. He's right down the street.
Starting point is 00:25:20 Please, Harry. Just come in. We're nice. We can see him walking down the street. We would have a great interview with him. It would. You'd have a good time. Anyways.
Starting point is 00:25:31 Just the thought. Could you imagine if he was in this room? No. We wouldn't put him in here. We'd have to rent out of studio. No. I would actually... He'd hit his head on the light.
Starting point is 00:25:38 No, I would be so embarrassed. I'd actually have to do it in the coming stems set. No, that would be even worse. He'd be like... sweating, it would be like 100 degrees down there? Is that why? I didn't pick up on it. It's in a bed, Noah. Oh, oh, I didn't pick up on it.
Starting point is 00:25:54 And I'm not reducing him to his sex scenes. Anyways, moving on. Anyway, Florence and Zach broke up. They broke up. And I really don't care. I kind of felt like we must have known that. I just felt like that was assumed. And she just confirmed it. Wait, was that before, after she got, remember people thought
Starting point is 00:26:14 she was with that other guy from We are the Millers. Oh, wow. Polter. Oh, I don't know. She didn't really, she didn't give a timeline. She just said that they're no longer together. Interesting.

And now there's been a lot of rumors about this. Apparently, some girls are going into Rush Week miced up. Apparently, the sisters, I don't know what I'm talking about when I come to sororities, are going to find the girls that are miced up and kick them off campus.
Starting point is 00:28:04 There was a ton of rumors. They scare the ever-living shit out of me. I'm not going to lie. The TikTok scare me so much. They are all so intimidating. I'm so scared of all. of them. Like they are, it's the most intimidating world. I love watching them though. No, I watch them. Yeah. But I'm so intimidated by them. I'm like, oh my God, I'm so scared. And it did feel like, like you said, it was crazy. They
Starting point is 00:28:30 were like, oh, people were being spied on. Like, we got to know what's happening or people, some people on TikTok were commenting like, oh my God, are you, are you going to be on the show? Like, all these things. I feel like everybody's really been focused on, um, there's one girl. that I feel like I see everywhere. Kylan? Yes. I don't have to say her name. C-Y-L-A-N.
Starting point is 00:28:56 Or is it? I'm just thinking it's with a K. Oh, K. That's what I meant. K-Y-L-A-N. Kyle and Darnell. Yes. I don't know why I said Hall. The L's. Yes.
Starting point is 00:29:10 Her stuff has been popping up. Her TikTok has been all over my four. She gets millions millions. My God, this one is 7.3 million. I got to see what's in her rushback. This one was nothing. This one was absolutely nothing.
Starting point is 00:29:24 Is it about what was in her rushback? No, it's like they just have envelopes. Oh. Well, she could be getting her bids. Oh. Yeah, I mean, another one. The world of sororities. So there has been this rumor that they were doing it.
Starting point is 00:29:44 Now it is confirmed. Variety is. reporting that it is happening, that they, it will be a subject of a new documentary from Vice Studios. They're doing a deep dive. It's going to be directed by the introducing Selma Blair director, Rachel Fleet, Flight. It's in production in Tuscaloosa right now. Rush Week is happening where more than 2,500 students rush 19 sororities.
Starting point is 00:30:13 In a statement via Vice, she said, this film is a thoughtful and compassionate portrayal of young women in 2020. as they rush the sorority system at the University of Alabama. A representative for Vice Studios told the times that, quote, hidden microphones are not involved in the production, following rumors that surfaced on TikTok about sorority candidates that have been caught with concealed recording devices during recruitment. The university is aware of reports that outside parties have facilitated unauthorized recordings of our students involved in recruitment,
Starting point is 00:30:42 the assistant director communications at Alabama, University of Alabama, wrote, the university has not authorized. any third party entity to film record or document any recruitment activities and does not allow media inside occupy buildings such as residence halls and sorority houses. So I'm not, you know, I'm not quite sure how they're doing this, but they're doing it. The documentary has allegedly been in the works of Vice since Bama Rush first became popular on TikTok during the 2021 recruitment season. And one recent graduate told the times that she was approached last November via Instagram
Starting point is 00:31:15 by a person who claimed to be a Vice Studios producer about. being a part of a film set up at HMO Max, but she ultimately declined. I'm very interested. I will definitely be interested in this documentary. I'm confused on how they're going to actually get what they need to get. How are they getting the content or is it they're not, they're just like talking about rushing or people that have done it already. Yeah, like I want the juicy stuff. I don't know how anybody, I'm confused on how no one on TikTok has just fessed up to being on it, you know? Or set, but I guess they don't want to.
Starting point is 00:31:52 But this is a thing. It's going to be on. It's going to come out. And then what? Right. Then your whole, then your whole sorority hates you. And then everyone is, like, oh, you lied and you were part of this documentary the whole time. And then you're a snake.
Starting point is 00:32:05 Yeah. It's like a TV show that writes itself. Exactly. So I feel like the people that are doing it must be vocally saying that they're doing it. Scare the shit out of me. Why not just join a cheerleading team at that point? It's the same thing. Oh boy
Starting point is 00:32:19 That's not true Oh The The cheerleading in high school It's got vibes of a sorority Yeah Well Yelling chanting
Starting point is 00:32:30 The dancing is impeccable Some of these girls They really know how to move Recruitment dances The outfits everything is insane The pressure of being in a sorority Gives me anxiety And I am not even a part of one
Starting point is 00:32:42 And I will never be a part of one I'm way past the age now but the anxiety that it gives me thinking about joining a sorority. I would never go through what I hear. That's the thing. And I don't want to sound like I'm above it or whatever. I just would never do it because I know myself and I know I hate every aspect of like feeling like I need to like fit in with people. Yeah, but you guys know it's like it's not terrible at like every school.
Starting point is 00:33:07 No, I know that. I mean, I know that. At least with fraternities, I feel like a lot of schools are pretty bad. It's just the idea of it of like girls are so, so mean. My brother and sister, it was not bad. But girls can be so mean. They can't tell you what really happened. And like, just, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:33:21 It scares me. Like, they could be so mean. Well, that is definitely true. This is, it's such a major thing. So, Enews wrote that to date right now, the Bama Rush tag on TikTok has accumulated more than 1.2 billion views. Crazy. That's wild.
Starting point is 00:33:41 It's also like around that age range where people are like most, on TikTok too. So I guess this documentary is going to be is in production now. So it is happening. But it is going to be interesting to see like if anything we see on TikTok now is used for the documentary. You know what I'm trying to say? Like where are they intertwined? I could see this whole thing falling apart. You think? Yeah. I could see this documentary going right into the tubes. Back girl. I could. I just think that it like, Well, if nobody can... Clearly, they have people, clearly they have girls that have agreed to do this or else they wouldn't be in production, you know? But how far, how far are they going to go mic up before somebody starts doing mic checks?
Starting point is 00:34:28 Right, and how much can they share? Well, they definitely can't be miced up. I don't think they can be miced up, like, in the houses or anything like that. So they might, it might be like they have to go in and do what they do and then talk about it after. But, yeah, but then that's kind of boring. Yeah, yeah, that's a good point. So, that's a good point. I'm very intrigued by this. Me too. And I can see it just being cut. Yeah, I guess you have a point. But if they're, I also think that... Especially if it's going to be on HBO Max.
Starting point is 00:34:56 Geez. We know they have no issue cutting things. If they do... For them to report it in variety, though, I feel like it is their way of saying we're fucking doing this shit. We're doing it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:11 They also reported background variety. That is true. I'm just going to tee this one up for you, but, you know, Machine Gun Kelly's been doing some shows. He's cutting his face with bottles again. He's bleeding all over the place. I hate him. I do. I do not like Machine Gun Kelly.
Starting point is 00:35:32 Yeah. And I don't care. There's been a lot of discussion about their relationship status. Like so many rumors of if they're still together or not him and Megan. And people are like, oh, I saw on Dumas. It's like, no, I just saw her here. Like, he was just talking about her at this show. So it's like, just stop.
Starting point is 00:35:50 Just chill out, man. You don't need to break glass on your face and bleed everywhere all the time. You don't. Like, it's a part of his. It's a part of his thing. Yeah, like, oh my God, you're such a rock star, bro. It's a part of his thing. It seems like he's trying, trying hard.
Starting point is 00:36:03 That's why it just doesn't feel natural to me. Like, that's maybe my biggest issue with it. He has to prove himself. Yeah, like, are you a real rocker, bro? Because it doesn't feel like it. I don't know who I would say. But. I just, I don't like him.
Starting point is 00:36:16 I don't like him anymore. Not that I ever really liked him in the first place. I actually, I think I've been saying this for a while that I really haven't been on Machine Gun Kelly's side here. But lately, I'm just like, stop. Like, just shut up. Like, I just don't. Like, okay, you love blood and you love smashing things on your face and bleeding out everywhere. I'm wasting, like, thousands of dollars.
Starting point is 00:36:40 Yeah, wasting thousands of dollars and, like, putting yourself in serious homes. arm to zip line across the stadiums in Cleveland. Like, just fucking chill out, bro. Chill out. He did this show in Cleveland. You're not Motley Crew. Like, he thinks he's like, it's crazy. He apparently wanted to go back to the stadium at 5 a.m.
Starting point is 00:37:07 He tried to sleep in the middle of the field. Other footage from the concert showed fans cheering as he declared, I'm rich, bitch, before chugging. a glass of wine and smashing the glass. MGK also told the crowd that he would be fined $70,000 for each additional 10 minutes. The show goes on. And that's what he said.
Starting point is 00:37:26 You know what I say to that? I'm not stopping this show for shit. I'm rich, bitch. And then he ziplined the entire length of the stadium. There's like a whole crew. Let me tell you something. I will say ziplining the entire football stadium. Pretty cool.
Starting point is 00:37:39 I will say that's, I like, that's pretty cool. But it's just like nothing about him I find endearing. at all anymore. Like, I'm rich bitch. Only some people can say that and it's cool. But when he says it, it just sounds douchy. Yeah. I'm sorry.
Starting point is 00:37:55 I'm just not sold on him. I know. I don't, um, my feelings about him are just not as strong. I, it doesn't. I like it. I like his, I like the music. Maybe that's what I'm not like a big MGK like music listener. I enjoy the, I enjoy the music.
Starting point is 00:38:10 I went to his show, Pier 17 last year. You know what? Great time. I also. So, fun fact, have seen Machine Gun Kelly when he was a rapper with Wiz Khalifa. Yeah. He's very, his pop punk is a different side of him.
Starting point is 00:38:24 Have you seen that clip going viral on TikTok? It always goes viral, but he's on the breakfast club like 10 years ago. And he's, Charlemagne is just like, I don't respect you. Like, it's a rapper. And he's like, he does this whole freestyle. He's like, you can't tell me that you don't feel that. I don't know what to tell you, man. Listen, musically, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:38:41 Like, I know people love it. I'm not going to judge his music. I just not, I don't. There are songs I do like. Yeah, no. And I'm sure they're great. Not my, I mean, I do like pop punk music, but I don't know. He's, I just him.
Starting point is 00:38:55 He turns me off. He really does. I do feel like, uh, I'm becoming not love Megan Fowles. Well, I'm becoming more and more confident in, uh, in that relationship of falling apart in the near future. Yeah, he's an animal. It seems like there's some madness going on there. Their twin flames may have burned too bright.
Starting point is 00:39:21 I have no idea. I honestly don't even know what to say anymore, but it's just going to sound meaner and meaner if I keep talking. Like I just... That's fine. You said what you wanted to say. You don't fuck with it. That's it.
Starting point is 00:39:29 I don't. I'm just like, stop smashing glasses on your face. Like, I don't find it endearing at all. Like, it's not like... Well, I don't know if anybody finds it in dear. No, no, but some people love it. Like, I'm using the term in a way that's... I don't mean to, but...
Starting point is 00:39:42 I love a rock star. Yeah. Love a rock star. He ain't doing it for me. That is fine. What are your thoughts? I agree. I mean, I don't like, I'm not a fan of him.
Starting point is 00:39:55 I think it's kind of just seems like he's trying hard to be cool. Yeah, I don't really think anybody needs to be smashing glass in their face, but you're, it's a lot of people think that that is cool. Like, he filled an entire football stadium. Yeah. People like it. No, yeah. People fucking love him. Like, people love him.
Starting point is 00:40:17 I'm not one of those people. Yeah. So, and in the moment, he does it and you're probably like, fuck yeah. Maybe. Or not you guys, but the sun. People that are there. That's the thing, though, is somebody else did that that I, like, I'm not saying totally against. I'm trying to think of anyone.
Starting point is 00:40:32 I'd be like, let's go. Right. But I'm just like. I can't think of it. That doesn't do anything for me. Yeah, like, I'm, like, I just, he just doesn't scream rock star to me. He just doesn't. I think he's a fake rock star.
Starting point is 00:40:42 Ooh. Yeah. Yeah, come at me. I don't care. People are going to be pissed at that. You can say whatever you want to say. I know, and I can't keep seeing this man. Harry Stiles is more a rock star than him.
Starting point is 00:40:53 Yes, I genuinely think that. That's true. I will... This is what I'm saying. I hear you guys. Your opinions are valid. I don't mind him. I'm going to open up his Instagram right now.
Starting point is 00:41:07 I really don't. And I think that just comes down to, like, I do enjoy listening to his music. I think if I like his music... Do you listen to music? Like, regularly? Not regularly, but like if his song comes on, I'll turn it up, I'll listen to it. I think if I liked his music. And like I said, I went to his show last year.
Starting point is 00:41:21 I thought it was a good show. I think his acting is his best quality. You know what? Same. I actually really enjoy him as an actor. Yeah, like, everything he's in as an actor, I'm like... You know what? I love Colson, the actor.
Starting point is 00:41:32 I think he's a great actor. And thank you for bringing that up because I do think he's a really good actor. I hate his outfits. Like, I'm sorry. I just... Every outfit he wears makes me want to puke. Like, I hate... hate his outfits. I don't know why. Like, I just, they're so, like, I love the color of pink,
Starting point is 00:41:51 but he elicited such a strong emotion for you. It's just like, everything is just so, like, makes me, like, his outfits make me nauseous. They're bright. The bright pinks, I love pink, but it's just like, look at that. Yeah. Whatever. Tickets to my down. I don't hate his music, you know what I mean? Yeah. But great actor. Him as, he played a great Tommy Lee. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:24 In the dirt. Even like, what was that Pete Davidson movie that he was in? And that's like his friend. Oh, yeah, they were good. Big time. Big time adolescence? Yeah. Well, Sidney's in that?
Starting point is 00:42:34 Yeah. Yeah, that was good too. Yeah. He's good actor. That was a nice way to end with saying something nice. I think he's a great actor. Yeah. There we go.
Starting point is 00:42:42 I wouldn't say great. Let's just send it on that. We have an awesome interview with Jeanette McCurdy. Starting point is 00:44:10 We are here with a very special guest. We are joined by Jeanette McCurdy, her new memoir. I'm glad my mom died is out now. We have Reddit and we are so excited to talk all about it. Thank you for joining us, Jeanette. Thanks for having me. I'm excited to be talking with you guys.
Starting point is 00:44:25 I finished this in a day. I flew through it. I was so like, oh my God. It was great and it was eye-opening to so many things because I do think Ria and I are definitely in that age group of. you know massive we watched i carly like that's our you know we're 25 and i'm almost 28 so that's you know we're in that world and you think like oh i was 13 and watching these shows and i just thought that this girl was her character i just assumed that that's just who she was like in real
Starting point is 00:45:07 life yeah and i'm reading your book i'm like oh my god kids are so stupid right exactly and i think that, you know, obviously as we grew up, you start to hear rumblings about things, you know, the media, articles, whatever, things come out, right? And you're like, what do we believe? What do we not believe? But then you give us this and we're like, all right, now we're getting the facts and everything is just like laid out on the table. And obviously, the title, like when people first hear it, they're like, whoa. But I also thought it was fucking awesome. Like, I thought it was just, I thought it just was like, boom, just lets you know what this is going to be about. Were there any other working titles you guys had or did you know that this is what you wanted
Starting point is 00:45:51 to name your book? I knew that's what I wanted the title to be. There were never any other considerations. And I also, when I initially showed it to my lit agent, he was like, let's see what the publisher say. Like, here we go. And my editor at Simon & Schuster was the first person who read the proposal and he was so on board with it, which just was so validating because I was concerned that no one would.
Starting point is 00:46:11 want it and think like, oh, I'm not getting that a book with that title. But to have him be so supportive and totally get it and be drawn in because of it was very validating and fulfilling. I mean, that's how you wrote people in. Like if you really want people to know what's going on, that's how you rope them in. And so you've been talking a lot about this book. And I'm curious how the press has been for you because you're doing different podcast interviews. How has that been for you? because, you know, you did talk a lot about in this book about how stepping away a little bit. You were done with acting as a kid. You kind of just like didn't really want to be in front of the camera.
Starting point is 00:46:49 And you're doing all this press. So how are you feeling now doing all of this? Well, that's such a considerate question. I appreciate that so much. I was definitely nervous going into the press like before, you know, before hand, I kind of saw the schedule and I felt like, okay, I want to make sure that I had like a therapy session specifically for. how I can show up and be myself and not feel like I fall into reverting to who I used to be impressed, which felt very much I'd make myself smaller and I'd just kind of like giggle a lot and not really say anything and just kind of have a smile plastered on my face while I'm chucking whatever the
Starting point is 00:47:23 thing was that I was trying to be selling. But it's, it is refreshing to be talking about something that I care about, that I'm passionate about because I don't have any sort of, there's no like stock soundbite that's been filtered through network executives and eight rounds of people and had a million drafts before I just kind of like utter the sound bite. Now it feels very much more connected and and I feel like I'm able to be present, which is a relief. But I will say initially the press that started coming out was a lot of headlines and the headlines were very stressful. Like the headlining stuff, I felt like, oh God, I was crying in my bed one night just thinking like, God, I really tried to put my whole soul into this book and to feel like that wasn't really
Starting point is 00:48:04 being acknowledged and it was more just like the clickpady headline aspects were being acknowledged. It was disappointing. But then this amazing thing happened where it shifted and people started reading the book and connecting with it and it completely changed and it didn't, it stopped becoming about the headlines and it became more about people connecting with it. And that was was so, so so touching to me. And it was great to have that after having the low of like, oh, God, it's just going to be these headlines and the feeling of disqualification. disappointment, but it was definitely an emotional. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:48:38 I do think that that is a big part. You see that a lot with memoirs that you want to sell books. So the weeks leading up, excerpts are sent out. And a lot of times those excerpts are some of the juicier stuff and you don't have the full context because it's only a paragraph of the story. Right. And then, you know, those get turned into those headlines and nobody's even read the book yet. But then the book came out, and I saw the exact change that you saw because I did see all those headlines right before the book came out. And we knew you were coming on the show. And so I was obviously reading those articles. And then once the book came out, I saw a lot of TikToks coming up on my page that were talking about the title of your book and the things not just about Nickelodeon or whatever, but the things about your mom and the things you went through very personally that I saw so many people writing.
Starting point is 00:49:30 Like I am so happy that somebody is so openly talking about their relationship with their mom. Like I have a relationship with my mom like this. And people think you're nuts that you could feel this way towards your parent. But like sometimes that's just how you feel. And so I saw that conversation happening more, which I thought was exactly why you would, you know, write something like this as to not only is it a therapeutic experience for yourself, but also for other people to be like, wow, I went through the same thing. and I know I'm not alone.
Starting point is 00:49:59 And like, it's okay to feel a certain way towards your parent. Oh, my God. I've heard from so many people. First off, I love TikTok. TikTok, just the TikTok is, is just lovely. But a lot of people approach me and say, like, my mom's still alive. I can't say this about her. I've been waiting for somebody to say something like this.
Starting point is 00:50:18 And it means so much. And those people are the ones that I sort of squeeze the tightest. And pray not to catch COVID from. They're just so nice. And I do feel like. It's something that's kind of that needs to be talked about. And I'm glad that some conversations are happening around, you know, parental and narcissistic abuse. Right.
Starting point is 00:50:35 And I, and this is a question I have for you and considering all of that is like, like I mentioned some people saying, you know, I felt like I could never, like somebody saying to you, I feel like I can't say. My mom still alive and I feel like I can't say this about them. Did you think that while you were growing up, you were like, this is my mom. I can't feel this way about her. And then like, when did it shift to realize? like, oh no, this person is actually terrible to me. And you know what? She was my mom, but I need to just see it for what it is. Yeah. I, I, that's, that's sort of the arc of the book because now, looking at things in retrospect, I have such a different perspective on it. But when I was little,
Starting point is 00:51:15 I idolized my mom and put her on this pedestal and clung to the pedestal that I had her on because my identity was revolved around her and her being on that pedestal. But now I think when I first started to have like an inkling that, oh, this is. isn't this isn't healthier, this isn't normal, or this isn't right. I think I was probably 11, and it's when my mom taught me in eating, she taught me the calorie restriction, which very quickly led to anorexia. And now I think that was when I started having that, like, itch of that pool, that tug of, oh, something's off, something's wrong. But I wasn't able to put that into words, certainly. And I also wasn't even able to really face that thought myself. Anytime I had any
Starting point is 00:51:56 thought that was even slightly negative or that removed my mom from that pedestal at all. As a coping mechanism, I would just tamp it down. I would just shove it away. I'd just, you know, ignore it because it was too scary and threatening of a thought to confront. It's the way you tell this story is so interesting as well, just stylistically. And I'm curious of how you made that decision because most of the time you read a memoir and you're reading someone, telling their story from where they are right now. Like, this is what happened and I did this and here's how it went and so on and so forth. This almost reads like fiction because you're telling it as each age as you get older.
Starting point is 00:52:46 It's like now I'm now I'm 11 and my mom has taught me to do this. It feels very present. Why did you make that decision to tell it that way? I'm so I'm so I'm so I'm so I'm so I'm so I'm so much like I really appreciate it I feel like I feel like it's too easy to like wax poetic or get too grandiose yeah like philosophize about things if ever coming from now like back when I was six and my mother it's just like why do I start talking like in a British accent completely different than I actually um so I thought it would keep me I thought it would keep the writing grounded and I also think that naivete is really funny
Starting point is 00:53:21 like trauma if you're just if you're just if you're just if you're you're just like exploring trauma. If I were exploring trauma from my point of view now, it would read so different, but also I don't think that the funny would be captured because to me the funny comes from that naive, not knowing that you're in a traumatic surrounding where you're just like, oh, the boys are playing Nintendo 64
Starting point is 00:53:41 and mom's chasing dad with a knife. Like it's normal and the normalcy and the sense of, oh, this is just another Tuesday. I think there's a lot of humor there. So I was hoping that that would help with humor. And then also you mentioned that it kind of reads like fiction and that was also a big an important piece to me was that I wanted it to just read as a good book and not like this you know overindulgent memoir or it's just goes on and on I really wanted to
Starting point is 00:54:07 keep the pace good I wanted it to read entertaining and and and I and I hope that's what happened yeah I definitely did yeah I love that you have like such a great sense of humor and that you wanted it to be funny in a way you know because it is a lot of Objectively not a funny topic. Objectively not funny, but I do love when people are so honest and make these things about their lives funny. I think it makes other people who go through the same thing feel very comfortable to joke around and people use that as like a coping mechanism.
Starting point is 00:54:41 But I'm sure there was a part of your life where you're like, you know, this just isn't funny anymore. I was a very serious child. Like nothing, you know, I took everything so seriously and I was very rigid and very sort of like furrowed brow all the time and stiff. But I do think my sense of humor, like, honestly, was only birthed when my mom, my mom was ill for the first time when I was two, and then she got cancer again when I was 18. And that's when I started seeing things as funny in a way that I hadn't before, I think just because I needed to. I think otherwise I just would have been curled in a
Starting point is 00:55:15 ball crying. It just would have been too difficult to handle the circumstances around me. So I started, I think then was when I started kind of establishing a sense of humor and my brothers were all very funny and we were all able to laugh through a lot of the, a lot of the tragedy without making light of it, just the humor that was happening very vividly right in front of us. You write your story and you talk about your mom and your mom is no longer here, but you do include, like you said, your family, your siblings, your father, all these people. what was their reaction to you kind of letting it all, letting it all out there for the world to read?
Starting point is 00:55:57 My brothers are great. I actually just saw them yesterday. We all went to Disneyland. Amazing. Yeah, we were staying at the Disneyland. We just went around the parks and just to kind of celebrate. And they've been so supportive throughout the writing of it and the release of it.
Starting point is 00:56:11 And they've just always been a constant source of love and support. I've been really grateful for them. And also, they have a sense of humor about all these things as well. So there wasn't any element of like, ooh, you're saying what now? You know, they were laughing along. Yeah. Now, has it ever, have you ever thought about what your life would have been like if it never went down the path of acting or getting into entertainment?
Starting point is 00:56:44 Like, do you feel like your mom would have acted differently? or do you feel like all those things would have appeared in different ways? I think there was no not acting with my mom. I think she had her sight set on. If I have a daughter, I'm going to shove her in the showbiz and slap those white strips on her teeth and get her an agent and call it a day. And I think, I just think no matter what she would have found some way of sort of shoehorning that in.
Starting point is 00:57:11 But I do think about that sometimes. I do think about what life would have been like without, without any sort of acting. But there's been this cool switch that's happened. Honestly, I only think through the writing of the book, but where I've been able to look back on the past and say, hey, I'm really grateful because it put me here. And it led me here.
Starting point is 00:57:31 And it led me to the people that are in my life and the friendships that I've made and the career that I now have. And so it all kind of feels like, well, yeah, there were a lot of obstacles. But it all did put me on the track that I'm on. now and that's a track that I'm happy to be on. Yeah. And you know, you mentioned all the click baity headline stuff, which is obviously part of the book and what a lot of people keep talking about because it's something that I think people and like Fran had mentioned, we were kind of waiting
Starting point is 00:58:04 for as people who grew up watching Nickelodeon. Right. It's a fascinating element of the era where it's like we were such big fans, but it's we want to know, you want to know what was actually happening. There were always rumblings. Like I remember when YouTube started to become really popular, I remember being, I don't even know how old I was, but it was definitely around the same time that the shows were still airing and like YouTube was like becoming popular, that I was watching YouTube videos on this, you know, so-called creator and like other things where I'm like, okay, like, you know, like feeling very confused. Wait a second. You're taking the rose color glasses off a little bit. views like you know one second the TV's right next to me and Nickelodeon's on and I'm on the computer at the same time watching a YouTube video about what's happening behind the scenes and you're
Starting point is 00:58:51 like this you know this isn't coming from nothing right like this has been going on for as long as Amanda Bines and all that and all yeah that's been going on which was a long time ago um when you decided that you were going to include some of these things in this memoir um what was that feeling like because I'm assuming it had to be a little bit scary in some way. So everything, the emotional arc that was most important to me was my mom, of course, my relationship with my mom, and the books divided into before and after. It's of course before she died and after she died. And so everything that, I don't do a ton of outlining, but I like did the broad beats of what I wanted each vignette to be. It's divided into 90 something vignettes. And each vignette that ultimately
Starting point is 00:59:35 made it only service to the arc of my relationship with my mom and I and the, you, and the, what eventually becomes my sort of breaking free and my independence from her. I remember even, I think we cut, you know, probably a dozen vignettes from it just because they, I liked them. I thought they were entertaining, but they just didn't fit the, the thrust, the emotional thrust of the story. So anything that stayed only serviced that thrust. So I did feel like, okay, this is, this is the, this is the right approach because this is the most meaningful thing for me to explore and anything else. was just extra or somewhat irrelevant.
Starting point is 01:00:14 So what wound up on the page, I did feel like ready to be out there, you know? Right. You thought it was crucial to the story that you were telling me. Exactly. Yeah. Exactly. The I,
Starting point is 01:00:23 much cleaner, quicker way of saying what I said. I really liked reading about, um, also that connection with Miranda and how that all sort of started. because like I said, watching for me, you guys are, I'm watching TV. I'm like, you guys are my A-List celebrities, right? And like, these are, this is the, this is A-List celebs. And to hear you kind of be like, you know, she asked me for my AIM and it was something I didn't
Starting point is 01:00:56 even have. And like, you guys would message back and forth. I'm like, oh, my God, that's how I met my friends. Yeah. Like, it's, it was really cute. And I do feel like that kind of where she. jumps in and out of the story definitely fits, like, where you were going with it all as well. And it was just cool to see, like, that friendship evolve.
Starting point is 01:01:23 And, like, she didn't pop in as like, oh, my co-star Miranda was like, oh, my friend Miranda. Yeah, yeah, yeah, totally. How is your friendship with her evolved, you would say, now? So this thing happens in your 20s. I'm curious if you guys have experienced this. Absolutely. I can already assume what you're saying. You know what I'm going to say?
Starting point is 01:01:43 Where it's like your friendships that you think when you're 20 years old, you're like, these are my absolute, the friends that will be on my deathbed, we'll be playing bingo and clutching each other's hands and watching Jeopardy, that shifts. And sometimes you can't even really make sense of it. It's just like, oh, wow, I haven't talked to that person in months. Right. And then there's kind of complicated feelings around it, but I mean, I love her to pieces, but we just, we're not as close as we used to be,
Starting point is 01:02:10 but it was just totally a natural, I think, I guess, aging. Yeah. I mean, things get in the way. People's lives changed. People focus on different things. I feel like that happens all the time. And definitely there are people that I thought I was going to be friends with forever that it wouldn't be weird if I talk to them now,
Starting point is 01:02:25 but I just haven't talked to them in a little bit. Yeah, I actually just had that experience recently where I saw, I did like a little girl's trip and saw some friends that I have not seen in a long time. But we weren't like when we, when I do see them, time. It feels like. It's like a time machine. You feel like exactly no, it could have been years, but it feels like no time has passed. And I think that is how a lot of female friendships kind of change as you get older, but you can kind of fit back into that. Did you have any thoughts of maybe I could maybe do it when she approached you when they started to discuss a reboot? Or were you
Starting point is 01:03:05 always like, nope. No, no. So I say in the book sort of that it was a simple decision and it's, and it came from this place of what's, what's, what serves my mental and emotional health. Um, and that, that really is the first thing that I run my decisions through just because there were so many decisions that were not run through that filter and it really, I know what those consequences are. And so it just, it, it's sort of, it's simple in that way.
Starting point is 01:03:30 It just does it help that. And if it doesn't get past that first. line of defense, there's no, there's no chance. Yeah, it's just you taking control of your own life and making that decision like, you know what? No, I don't want to be on this show. And it makes sense. There was something that was brought up in this book and also in Josh Peck's memoir. And we had him on the show and we talked to a little bit. I love Josh. We love Josh. He's awesome. He came on the show. We talked about his memoir. And you learn a lot of interesting things. And something that was brought up was, you mentioned
Starting point is 01:04:01 like the pet like when we keep going back to like us watching you guys on TV and I think that's the best way to reference it is like you think that you guys are like billionaires right you're like oh my God yeah they are like they have it so made yeah like they are just they're set for life or whatever but you guys actually really didn't get paid as much as one would think for all the time that you are putting into this show as a young person No, absolutely. You know, there's also a lot of pay differences around what network a show is on, whether you, whether or not you get residuals has a lot to do with it. That was our most mind-blowing factor. Like, there's not, they don't get residuals. Yeah. These shows are on TV constantly. They're on Hulu. They're on Netflix now. I mean, how do you feel about people going back and watching, you know, I Carly and Sam and Kat now? Like, do you feel fine with it? are you kind of like, you know, that's just like not, it just wasn't me and you wish that it wasn't being brought up again all the time. No, I mean, of course people, I hope people watch whatever, whatever tickles their fancy. Yeah. Where is that saying? Yeah. Tiggles their fancy. You're right. I say that all the time. Great. What I say, the other day I said, until the cows come home. So but no, no, I hope people watch whatever, whatever suits them. But also, I will say,
Starting point is 01:05:31 say there's this tremendous feeling of relief and appreciation that I have now with the book. And the people who are approaching me now, it's completely about the book. And it does feel like a way different experience. People will share some of their story or say something that they connect with. You know, I mentioned the thing about people talking about my mom's alive. I can't say this. Thank you for saying this. Or people talking about their experience with eating disorders. And it just feels like there's such a different level of humanity there and emotional connection. and that's something that I crave and sort of have that with people now who approach me is a complete 180 from before and I'm I really appreciate it.
Starting point is 01:06:09 Do you wish some of the people you worked with would open up and speak out about some of the things that they saw an experience? Like, does that frustrate you at all? I, I just own my experience and I've tried. I feel like that's the best approach for me. I, you know, I can only, I can only know my experience fully and I can only speak to my experience fully and what everybody else does with theirs is they're right. But I am, I'm content with how I handle mine. What is coming next for you? Because I think you're such a fabulous writer. And I think
Starting point is 01:06:43 I look back to, you know, you tell on your mom, hey, mom, I wrote a screenplay and she's like, you're not going to be a writer. You're an actor. You're an actor. You're not a writer. But you were young and already thinking with that mindset, that writing mindset, is that something that you want to continue doing? Yes, I would love to. I've been working on a novel and a collection of essays, and that's been really creatively fun and explorative, and the novel especially is very, very fun because it's not about my life, and I've explored that pretty thoroughly.
Starting point is 01:07:14 So it's really cool to kind of get into another character's point of view and write through, because it's written through her point of view, and sort of right through her experience and to give voice to someone else, even fictional, you know, even a fictional someone else is really fun. Yeah. Do you want to focus more on books and that sort of writing or would you want to venture into like Fran said, like, you know, writing a screenplay or a TV show or anything like that? I love screenwriting. I would definitely want to venture out into that as well as directing. That's been a really fun experience for me. And I like working, I love working with actors. It's so, you know, I didn't have,
Starting point is 01:07:56 much fun doing acting myself. It was just very stressful. But I love communicating with them. I think they tend to be very sensitive, compassionate people and watching them sort of do what they do and observing how differently people do acting and their own approach. It's just so, so fun to watch. I would assume that you would be great working with actors and, you know, being behind the scenes because you know what it's like to be treated. Not the right way. And so you would know how to hand handle it. I think that does make a difference. I think being, I have the experience of being a kid on many different sets and just being, you know, half the size of everyone else looking up and just kind of wandering to a mark and not really knowing how anything works. So it's, especially, yeah, I definitely
Starting point is 01:08:42 have that child, I remember that child point of view. But even, even if it's not a kid that I'm working with, I just think it's a very vulnerable thing to be acting and putting yourself out there emotionally. And I think actors deserve a lot of respect. love that when you get towards the end of this book, it does feel like you are completing a story. You are so young. And it felt like there's so much life has been lived. What do you, how do you feel about your, you know, mental state now and how you feel present day? Hmm. I appreciate that also. I actually, a couple months ago, it's funny you mentioned. that I'm so young because a couple months ago I was freaking out about turning 30. I couldn't believe it.
Starting point is 01:09:30 I booked a therapy session specifically to talk about 20 and the anxieties and they're like, oh my God, what's happening? But it was a relief to be able to have a therapy session about something like turning 30 because I've had therapy sessions that were about life-threatening eating disorders and about grieving my mom and about all these really heavy intense things that I was sitting across from Aaron, well, zooming across from Aaron. And to be able, we were able to just laugh about how, how, you know, what a treat it is to be able to have anxiety about something as simple as turning 30.
Starting point is 01:10:02 So that's been a real pleasant turnaround, I guess, just the therapeutic experience. But mental health-wise, I feel good. I feel sturdy. I feel like I've been able to be really present throughout this, you know, whole experience. And I'm excited to be talking about the things I'm talking about with the people that I'm getting to talk with. about these things. And I'm excited about the connection that's happening. I think that my life has never felt so, like, in tune with sort of what I want and what
Starting point is 01:10:38 I hope. And so that's a really, really cool ceiling for lack of a less outcome. I think that there's a lot of great conversation happening around your book in, in all different ways. And did I see that it's, did it sell out? like on Amazon. Yeah. That's incredible.
Starting point is 01:11:00 I always thought that that was like impossible. Yeah, Amazon just like a plethora of books. Amazon just always had the book. I thought that Amazon just always had everything. Exactly. Endlessly. So that's really cool. So that's a testament to how many people love this book.
Starting point is 01:11:12 Really proud of yourself. You should feel really proud of yourself. And I hope that you're giving yourself time to relax as well while also enjoying all this press because like I mentioned the first thing I said to you was like, it's a lot to be constantly talking about the things. things that shaped you and were traumatic experiences over and over and over again. And people are asking you the same questions. And you're like, well, I just wrote a book on it. Now I'm reliving it in every interview I do. So I hope that you're also taking the time for yourself.
Starting point is 01:11:39 Thank you. That's what the Disneyland trip yesterday with the Naces was all about. We just had a we went on Space Mountain. We went on the smugglers run, the Star Wars ride. I love it. That's amazing. Well, Jeanette, thank you so much for joining us and talking to us. everyone can get, I'm glad my mom died. I don't know if you can get it on Amazon. It may be sold out. You got to go to Barnes & Noble. You got to drive there and get it.
Starting point is 01:12:02 I'm sure, you know, if you're a Kindle reader, you could do that. People can read like that way. Did you do audio for this? I did. Yeah. Amazing. Which I also think is a great way to read or listen to listen to memoirs is when the author gets to actually audibly tell their story to.
Starting point is 01:12:24 So that's another way you could consume it. But we absolutely recommend there's some beautiful, scary, dark, funny, awesome stories that are in here that I think everybody will love to read about. Thank you so much for talking to us. Thank you so much. I really hope to do this in person sometime. You guys are great and I really enjoyed this. Yeah, we really hope so too. Thank you so much.
Starting point is 01:12:46 Thank you. Thanks, guys. Bye. All right, that wraps up today's episode of Chicks in the Office. Make sure you subscribe everywhere. We hope you have a great rest of your week and we will talk to you on Friday.
