Starting point is 00:00:11 Hello, everybody. Welcome to another episode of Christ with coffee on ice. I am your host, Ali Yost, and I am so grateful to be back with you guys on another Friday. Happy Friday, everybody. Thank you for tuning in. Thank you for coming back for another episode. If you've been a regular listener or welcome, if you're brand new, that's even more exciting. I am so excited for this week's episode because this one is going to be slightly different than what we've done. before, but I have felt this so heavy on my heart from the Lord. It has to be from the Lord because it hasn't gone away. And I feel like whenever you have a word dropped onto you or like a thought or a thing that just like won't go away, typically and normally, if it's biblical, it's probably
Starting point is 00:00:57 from the Lord, you know? Like I literally have not been able to get rid of this thought for over a week. And I'm like, are we supposed to be doing this on the podcast? Like, I don't know. I've been going live on TikTok where I have simply just been sitting down live with my Bible open and just reading scripture. And it's crazy how much people are just loving that. And I've just been doing a lot more like going to events, certain like Christian events or conferences or anything like that, like extra kind of worship nights. And I went to a conference recently. It was called The Send. I don't know if you guys are familiar with that. It was in Nashville this year. So we went. It was a couple weeks ago. There was a speaker that it said something along the lines of like when as Christians
Starting point is 00:01:43 did we think or stray away from the idea of just like God's word being enough. You know, like he used an example. He was like my generation, as in like our parents' generation because he was a bit older. He was like, my generation really did a great job at screwing that up where it's like we would invite people to church and then we'd be like, and there's free coffee or and there's donuts, you know? And so it's like we always treated it like there was like this thing. Like that was the selling point or that was the thing that made it enough for people to want to attend. But when did we stop making like the word of God like more than enough? Does that make any sense? We have pastors and we have our favorite Christian, you know, speakers. And I don't know, I might fall into that category for
Starting point is 00:02:26 some of y'all too, where you really look forward to what Ali has to say. And I loved what he said. because he basically was like all the fluff, like all the stuff where it's like, we can't wait to hear a pastor's POV on this or we can't wait to hear somebody's interpretation of this. But when did it just stop being about the word? Like when did we start putting God's word in a box where that alone wasn't enough? Does that make sense? And I don't know why, but like that moment really stuck with me. And I felt like it made me immediately think about my podcast. Not that I feel like I've been guilty of this.
Starting point is 00:02:57 I think that I've been, you know, we haven't been doing this for very long before. for the short time that we've been doing this podcast, I've kept it priority that Jesus is at the center of this. And like, I don't want any words to come out of my mouth that is not of his. You know, I'm trying my best to do that at least. And I don't know. I just kind of like, I was like, maybe we don't need to have episodes that are just, you know, Ali preaching about a topic, which is great.
Starting point is 00:03:19 And I still want to do that. But maybe we could just sit down and just read the Bible. Like, maybe the word of God today is enough for us, you know? Like it should always be, but maybe this week, this Friday, today is the day that we just read the Bible. So can we do that together? Like, I don't even know how long we're going to go for. I know I want to start in the book of John because I think it's incredible. And I actually started reading the book of John when I was first saved.
Starting point is 00:03:49 That was the first book I ever read. And I've been reading it again. And it's completely like blown my mind the way that, I don't know. We think that we've read certain books in certain scripture. and you're like, yeah, yeah, I already know it. But if you go back and read some of the stuff that you've already read, it will blow your mind all over again. So even if you're already fairly, you know, familiar with the book of John or you've already read the book of John, I still encourage you to listen because I just think that's the beauty of what the word of God is, is that it is alive and it will
Starting point is 00:04:18 continue to speak to you. And there are things that maybe you've heard in one way and then it'll speak to you a completely different way today. And also, I thought the book of John would be really great, anybody who is new in this journey of like, you know, even touching the Bible or the Word of God at all, you know? So I invite you guys to do this with me, even if you're just going on a walk. Like, I think it's good to even just let the Word of God like, just go through your ears and just let it absorb into your being and just be in it and listening to it, you know? But if you are in a place where you could sit down and take your Bible out, I would encourage you to do that and follow along.
Starting point is 00:04:56 I think that would be really impactful so you can kind of highlight. and do whatever you want and just be in it at the same time as just reading it. But we're going to be reading the book of John. And I, just so everybody understands if my version sounds different than yours, I have the new international version, NIV. So that's what I'm going to be reading from. If you have ESV or any other version, it's going to sound a little bit different, but pretty much the same, you know.
Starting point is 00:05:16 But anyway, I think this is going to be great. I think this is going to be so fun. Obviously, you know, if there's any side tangent moments, we can kind of go off topic and even converse about this. but I think it'd be really special to just read the word of God and just give him a moment where it's like, you know what, this is more than enough is just the word, you know, and just listening to it and letting it come out of my mouth too. I really need this personally as well. I have not gotten in my Bible at all today and I tried to find a moment. I was like, you know what? What's the best excuse ever than to just do it right now?
Starting point is 00:05:47 Like we both mutually need this. You know what I mean? So this is good for you guys, but this is also really good for me. and I'm so grateful for this community, and I'm grateful that we're doing this together. I also just want to say a quick prayer too, guys. Can we pray really quick? And just pray for this time together and that, you know, the word that this really speaks to you guys, even though Ali isn't, like, preaching today. You know what I mean? So Lord Jesus, I just want to thank you so much for this opportunity, God. Thank you so much for being present. And thank you for your word. Like, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. and not only you just being present in this room with us right now, God, but thank you for the gift of this word. God, there's just so much magic in this book, Jesus, and we just thank you for that,
Starting point is 00:06:31 God. Thank you for the sacrifices that you've made. Thank you for walking in such an incredible example for all of us to follow in Jesus. And we just love you. We're so grateful, God. Thank you for bringing us together. Thank you for creating this community. And I'm just so grateful to be leading this moment in just reading your word and understanding who you are deeper God and learning more about who Jesus was and we're just unbelievably grateful this is such a privilege Lord we understand that there are not many people in the world and other parts of this world who actually do not even know what the word of God looks like or could sound like you know it's not translated in their language or maybe Christianity is just not practiced or it's illegal it's forbidden you know so god we also just recognize how much of a privilege
Starting point is 00:07:15 this is to even simply open up a Bible or just hear it through this podcast episode, God. It is a privilege. It's a blessing, Lord. And so we thank you for that in your mighty name. God. I also pray that this just speaks to people, you know, without me even saying a word, God. I just pray that you just breathe on this Lord and that you just speak directly through your children the way that they need to hear it. God. You know every single one of their hearts. You know every single one of their struggles. You know every single one of their insecurities. Anything that they're going through God, you know every single one of them listening, Lord. And I just thank you for that.
Starting point is 00:07:47 I thank you for your intentionality. I thank you for how just kind and caring you are, Lord, and how much you just love us, Jesus. So we pray that in your mighty name, God. Amen. Oh, also, we have our iced coffee with us. Our coffee on ice. I haven't said that in a while, have I?
Starting point is 00:08:05 It's always present in the room. You know what I've been drinking lately, y'all? This is by a brand called Alani Energy, I guess. It's originally an energy drink brand company, but they do all sorts of other stuff like pre-workout. I think they have like protein powders, but this is a coffee that they make. And it comes like pre-made and I just pour it on ice because I love it. So it's already made. It just comes in like a little plastic, you know.
Starting point is 00:08:31 And it's a protein coffee. It's got protein in it. Can you believe that? And it tastes really good. And it also does not make me like super crazy. I mean, like it doesn't make me feel like I'm literally on planet. Mars, you know, and some coffees, most coffees make me feel that way. And this one doesn't. So I love that. And this is what I've been drinking the last few weeks. They sent it to me in PR. I got like a couple
Starting point is 00:08:52 boxes of it. So I'm like loaded. I'm like so many of them in my fridge. All right. Let's get into the freaking word, y'all. Let's get into the book of John. So we are starting at the very beginning. So one, one. The word became flesh. So in the beginning was the word. And the word was with God. and the word was God. He was with God in the beginning, through him all things were made. Without him, nothing was made, that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light. He came,
Starting point is 00:09:39 only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, children born not of natural descent. nor of human decision or a husband's will but born of God.
Starting point is 00:10:15 The word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory the glory of the one and only son who came from the father full of grace and truth. John testifies concerning him. He cried out saying, This is the one I spoke about when I said, He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me. out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given for the law was given through moses grace and truth came through jesus christ no one has ever seen god but the one and only son
Starting point is 00:10:52 who is himself god and is the closest relationship with the father and has made him known y'all i don't know this might add to the vibe but there's a whole thunderstorm rolling through right now which i was not expecting and I mean it's like thunder and lightning outside so if you hear that in the background i don't know how much i can avoid that in the audio uh but hey maybe it'll add to the vibes the cozy vibes okay we're in john one 19 now now this was john's testimony when the jewish leaders in jerusalem sent priests and levites to ask him who he was he did not fail to confess but confessed freely i am not the messiah they asked him then who are you are you elijah he said i'm not Are you the prophet? He answered, no. Finally, they said, who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? John replied in the words of Isaiah, the prophet, I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, make straight the way for the Lord. Now the Pharisees, who had been sent, questioned him. Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet? Right, because John was the Baptist.
Starting point is 00:12:05 John the Baptist. And a lot of what John's role was was to let the world know about the Messiah who was coming. Even though he didn't know who the Messiah was or what he was going to look like, that was his role. He had told people the Messiah is coming, you know. John says, I baptized with water, John replied, but among you stands one, you do not know. He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan where John was baptized. The next day, John saw Jesus coming towards him and said, look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
Starting point is 00:12:49 This is the one I meant when I said, a man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me. I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel. Then John gave this testimony. I saw the spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, the man on whom you see the spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit. I have seen and I testify that this is God's chosen one. The next day, John was there again with two of his disciples.
Starting point is 00:13:33 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, look, the Lamb of God. When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, What do you want? They said, Rabbi, where are you staying? Come, he replied, and you will see. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent the day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
Starting point is 00:13:57 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, we have found the Messiah, that is, the Christ, and he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, you are Simon, son of God, but you will be called Peter. The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, follow me. Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida.
Starting point is 00:14:28 Philip found Nathaniel and told him, we have found the one Moses wrote about in the law, and about whom the prophets also wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. Nazareth, can anything good come from there? Nathaniel asked. Come and see, said Philip. I had to get myself a cough drop, y'all. I'm so sorry, side note.
Starting point is 00:14:48 I was just struggling so much. I'm kind of like still recovering from a weird cold right now, so I'm sorry if it sounds like I've got something in my mouth. I just, I need this cough drop to get through this episode. But I love this part where Nathaniel had said, Nazareth, can anything good come from there? Right? Because at this point, Nazareth was not looked at, like, the quality of the people there was very frowned upon and looked down on. And so I love how intentional the Lord was with just where Jesus came from, you know, like the literal savior of the world, the son of God, comes from Nazareth, which to the Lord. the world, they had said, can anything good come out of Nazareth? Are you kidding me? It's like actually
Starting point is 00:15:35 the most epic miracle of all time came out of Nazareth. So this was like a little sticky note moment that I put in my Bible right here, which I think is worth mentioning as I said, when the world says nothing good can happen there, God reveals the opposite. Jesus came from Nazareth, savior of the universe. God blesses the lowest places. Like he really does. And you see that even through the disciples. Like, as you read about, you know, the people who follow Jesus and his 12 disciples, bro, they were all like very average people who were messed up and had their faults, you know, and had their sins. Obviously, Jesus was a perfect man, but for him to come out of a place like Nazareth was also just such a cool thing that the Lord did that just shows you how powerful he is and that there is nothing impossible to God. Like, yeah, actually, when the world says that nothing good can happen there, God reveals the opposite. So that's just such a cool moment because I think that we can even relate to that in our own lives where if the world tells us that it's impossible or the world says one thing about maybe who you are or, I don't know, culture in general.
Starting point is 00:16:44 It's just so stupid because it's like all man made. It's like, what does man know? God is supernatural. He literally operates outside of time and space. So when the world says that nothing good can happen, the Lord says, watch me. plot twist. And that's kind of like what happened here with Jesus. Like literally the Messiah that we've all been waiting for, right? It was written in law. Everyone was expecting the Messiah. We just didn't know when. And so it's just cool how God did that. I hope you guys caught that because I think it's pretty
Starting point is 00:17:14 freaking incredible. Okay, Nazareth. Can anything good come from there? Nathaniel asked. Come and see, said Philip. When Jesus saw Nathaniel approaching, he said of him, here truly is an Israelite. in whom there is no deceit. How do you know me? Nathaniel asked. Jesus answered, I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you. Then Nathaniel declared, rabbi, you are the son of God, you are the king of Israel. So Nathaniel got to this point because it was just him in that fig tree. Like when Jesus is referring to, I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you, he's literally like, I saw, I knew what you were doing.
Starting point is 00:17:55 Like, you were alone, but I knew exactly where you were, and I saw it. And so Nathaniel's mind is literally blown. And that was Jesus's moment of kind of like being like, it's me, you know? So then that's when Nathaniel was like, oh my gosh, rabbi, you are the son of God. You are the king of Israel. Like, whoa. Wait, so you are, you know. Jesus said, you believe because I told you.
Starting point is 00:18:19 I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that. He then added, very truly I tell you. you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the son of man. On the third day, a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother, said to him, they have no more wine. Woman, why do you involve me? Jesus replied, my hour has not yet come.
Starting point is 00:18:52 Meaning, this is Jesus telling his mom, I'm not supposed to be doing. want any miracles yet like my time hasn't come yet like i'm not like she knows what he's capable of because she knows she knew from the start right we know mary if we don't when angel came down told her about how her life was about to change and that she was going to give birth to the son of god and so anyway she knows who jesus is like and who jesus was supposed to be from the very beginning so she knows that jesus can perform miracles but he's like mom it's not my time yet his mother said to the servants, do whatever he tells you. Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from 20 to 30 gallons. Jesus said to the servants,
Starting point is 00:19:39 fill the jars with water, so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet. They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, everyone brings out the choice wine first, and then the cheaper wine after the guests have too much to drink, but you have saved the best till now. I wrote a little side note there, y'all, and I said, Jesus is only capable of the best. Like, if Jesus is going to make a wine, it's going to be the best wine you've ever tasted, because that's all he's capable of is the best. What Jesus did here in Kana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which
Starting point is 00:20:26 he revealed his glory and his disciples believed in him. After this, he went down to Copernum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days. When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts, he found people selling cattle, sheep, and dubs, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip, of cords and drove all from the temple courts both sheep and cattle he scattered the coins of the money chargers and overturned their tables to those who sold dubs he said get these out of here stop turning my father's house into a market his disciples remembered that it is written zeal for your house will consume me the jews then responded to him what sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this
Starting point is 00:21:16 Jesus answered them, destroy the temple, and I will raise it again in three days. They replied, it has taken 46 years to build this temple and you are going to raise it in three days. But the temple he had spoke of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken. So this just means that at the time Jesus saying that, no one really understood what he was talking about. No one was like, like, people were like, what do you mean? Like, not even his own disciples understood it.
Starting point is 00:21:50 But here it says his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken. So they remember that he said this after he had died. They were like, wait a minute. Remember when Jesus said that though? Or he said that he was going to raise again in three days? Destroy this temple and I will raise it again in three days. So then it clicked for them.
Starting point is 00:22:13 And Jesus does a lot of that. He does a lot of like saying things and people are like, huh? And then only it makes sense until later. You know what I mean? And honestly, wait, that's a word. Like low key. That's kind of how it is with us too sometimes. We're like, I don't know if everyone can relate to this, but I know there are some
Starting point is 00:22:28 listeners that could relate to this. But like, do you ever get a word from the Lord and you're like, what? And it like doesn't really make sense in the moment and then it makes sense. Like he's been doing that since the beginning of time. Like that's literally what Jesus did, you know? Sometimes he'd say a word. And it's like, you do not know now what I'm doing, but eventually you will. You know, like later you will. Where is that in the book of Matthew when he's washing his disciples' feet?
Starting point is 00:22:49 But yeah, I mean, it's just, it's so true. Like sometimes they don't even click for us until like days, weeks, months later, you know. Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person. Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus, who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him. Jesus replied very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again. How could someone be born when they are old?
Starting point is 00:23:41 Nicodemus asked. surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother's womb to be born, right? So at this point, Nicodemus is like, what do you mean born again? Like, we're already here. We've already been birthed by our mother. We can't like go back into our mom's stomach and like be, right? So he's like trying to figure it out. He's like, what do you mean reborn Jesus? Right? Because up until this point, no one is really like, this is all new to people, right? Jesus answered very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the speech. God. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised
Starting point is 00:24:18 at my saying, you must be born again. And the wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the spirit. How can this be? Nicodemus asked. You are Israel's teacher, said Jesus. And do you not understand these things. Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe. How then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven, the son of man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the son of man must be lifted up. That everyone who believes,
Starting point is 00:25:09 may have eternal life in him. That means that none of us had a clear shot at all of going to heaven if it wasn't for Jesus coming. Because right here Jesus says, no one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven, the son of man. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only son. This is the verdict.
Starting point is 00:25:52 Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, but will not come into the light for the fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. Y'all, I think that this part is so important when it comes to like truly understanding like, I don't know, I just think about all the times where, you know, you let's say as a Christian, you're trying to explain to people who are living in sin and like living a lifestyle without God. And you're trying to explain to them
Starting point is 00:26:33 why living with Christ is actually so freeing. Like it's literal freedom, you know, rather than the chains of living in sin, even though when you're living in sin, it feels like you have freedom in that, but you really don't. Like the ultimate freedom is living with Christ, you know? So this verse like really makes me think of those types of people
Starting point is 00:26:53 where they just, they want nothing. Like it's the people who like want nothing to do with Jesus. Like they don't want to hear it. They don't want to see it and they hate it. And I think that the biggest thing, and I don't know, maybe this is just my theory. I know that I said I wasn't going to give my two cents, but here I go. I just apparently can't stop. I believe that the reason that people are so, like, anti, and they get so defensive and they get so
Starting point is 00:27:17 angry specifically is because they low-key know the truth. Like deep down, deep, deep, deep, deep, deep, down, down, down, down. They know the truth. And everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that they're deeds will be exposed. Like, it's that fear of exposure that everything that they've been doing in the lifestyle that they've been living is going to get exposed. And I think a lot of that comes from even pride and ego where they're like, well, I don't want
Starting point is 00:27:47 it, like, I don't want it to come to the light. I don't want to have to face it. I don't want to expose it. They just live in this place of denial where that's why they reject it so hard and they get so angry, you know? Because the thing is, it's like if they had peace, like actual peace in the way that they were living and their lifestyle of living a worldly life. I mean, I could even be speaking to a version of myself before, right?
Starting point is 00:28:13 But like, if they really had true peace in that lifestyle, why are we getting so defensive, you know? Like, that's where I really believe that it's like deep down, they know the truth. And the reason they're like duking up and they want to get angry and they want to get defensive is because I just feel like guilty person feels the need to do that. Like a guilty person gets angry and dukes up. I mean, think of any time that you've been caught in a lie or you've been caught in something, y'all. Like, we've all been there and you get real defensive and you're like, I would have never, I would never do that. I'd never say that. I'm no, like no. And you get so defensive. It's almost like a guilty person just gets defensive like that. You know what I mean? It's also a place of like,
Starting point is 00:28:57 they just don't want their deeds to be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God. After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them and baptized. John also was baptizing at Enan near Salim because there was plenty of water and people were coming and being baptized. This was before John was put in prison. An argument developed between some of John's disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing. They came to John and said to him, Rabbi, that man who is with you on the other side of the Jordan, the one you testified about, look, he's baptizing and everyone is going to him.
Starting point is 00:29:45 To this, John replied, a person can receive only what is given them from heaven. You yourselves can testify that I said, I am not the Messiah, but am sent ahead of him. The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him. and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. He must become greater, I must become less. I love that so much. I love that so much.
Starting point is 00:30:18 He must become greater, I must become less. And when John says the bride belongs to the bridegroom, y'all, we're the bride, and Jesus is the bridegroom, right? Like, we belong to Jesus. the friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine. Isn't that so sweet? I love that. The one who comes from above is above all.
Starting point is 00:30:44 The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. whoever has accepted it, has certified that God is truthful. For the one whom God has sent speaks the word of God, for God gives the spirit without limit. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on them.
Starting point is 00:31:22 Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John, although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee. Now he had gone through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar. Near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph, Jacob's well was there and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, will you give me a drink? His disciples had gone into the town to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, you are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink? For Jews do not associate with Samaritans. Jesus answered her, if you knew the gift of God and who it is
Starting point is 00:32:18 that asks you for a drink, you would have asked and he would have given you living water. Sir, the woman said, you have nothing to draw with. and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? And are you greater than our father, Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself? As did also his sons and his livestock? Jesus answered, everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life. The woman said to him, sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water. He told her, go call your husband and come back. I have no
Starting point is 00:33:06 husband, she replied. Jesus said to her, you are right when you say that you have no husband. The fact is you have had five husbands and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true. Sir, the woman said, I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem. Woman, Jesus replied, believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father, neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks. God is
Starting point is 00:33:59 spirit and His worshippers must worship in the spirit and in truth. The woman said, I know that Messiah, called Christ, is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us. Then Jesus declared, I, the one speaking to you. I am He. Just then, his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman, but no one asked, what do you want, or why are you talking with her? Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah? They came out of the town and made their way toward him. Meanwhile, his disciples urged him, Rabbi, eat something. But he said to them, I have food to eat that you know nothing about.
Starting point is 00:34:46 Then his disciples said to each other, could someone have brought him food? My food, Jesus said, is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. Don't you have a saying it's still four months until harvest? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields. They are ripe for harvest. Even now the one who reaps, draws a wage, and harvests a crop for eternal life. So that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. Thus the saying, one sows and another one reaps is true.
Starting point is 00:35:21 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work and you have reaped the benefits of their labor. Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony. He told me everything I ever did. So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them and he stayed two days. And because of his words, many more became believers. They said to the woman, we no longer believe just because of what you said. Now we have heard for ourselves.
Starting point is 00:35:52 And we know that this man really is the Savior of the world. I love that scripture, y'all, because I feel like that just shows such power. That's John 442, by the way. I love that because I feel like that just shows how the power of obviously our testimonies of our experience with Jesus and how he, you know, came into our lives or just just changed our lives, right? People will believe a testimony. You know, there's no arguing with that. Like, this woman was like, no, this was my experience. Like, he literally came to me and told me everything I ever did. And there's just no way on planet Earth. This guy was not the man of God.
Starting point is 00:36:30 Like, there's just no way he would know these things about me, right? Like, I don't even know who this Jewish man is. And he just told me everything I ever did, you know? And so that's a testimony. And that alone, like, convinced people where they were like, whoa, this guy is like, he must be the real deal. but I love that this says we no longer just believe because of what you said now we have heard for ourselves and we know that this man really is the savior of the world that's like somebody saying hey I saw your like I heard your testimony and I saw the way that the Lord was moving in your life and I wanted to see it for myself and now I actually like I really believe in the Lord because because of that mustard seed of faith right because of that curiosity because of that commitment like of hearing about someone else's testimony
Starting point is 00:37:12 and seeing the way that the Lord had changed their life, made them want to see it for themselves. And now they're like, oh, no, like, he is the real thing. Like, I saw what he did in your life. And now I'm seeing what he's doing in mind. And there is no doubt in this world that he, I mean, he really is the savior of the world, right? So that's like, I love that.
Starting point is 00:37:32 Because I feel like that sums up, like, why it's so important for us to share our testimonies, because it really would, like, if she didn't go into the village and tell everyone about that, I mean, there would be no curiosity for these other people, you know, of the Samaritans in this town where Jesus stayed for a couple more days to preach and, you know, and teach people. There wouldn't be as many believers if it wasn't for her running and telling everybody about the way that Jesus touched her. After the two days he left for Galilee, now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country. After the two days he left for Galilee, when he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover festival, for they also had been there.
Starting point is 00:38:16 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine, and there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Copernum. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death. Unless you people see signs and wonders, Jesus told him, you will never believe. The royal official said, sir, come down before my child dies. Go, Jesus replied, your son will live. The man took Jesus at his word and departed. While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. When he inquired, as to the time when his son got better, they said to him yesterday,
Starting point is 00:39:02 at one in the afternoon, the fever left him. Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus said to him, your son will live. So he and his whole household believed. This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee. Sometime later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the sheep gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethsaida and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here, a great number of disabled people used to lie, the blind, the lame, and the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for 38 years. When Jesus saw him laying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time,
Starting point is 00:39:52 he asked him, do you want to get well? Sir, the invalid replied, I have no one to help me into this pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me. Then Jesus said to him, get up, pick up your mat and walk. At once the man was cured, he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath. So the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, it is the Sabbath, the law forbids you to carry your mat. But he replied, the man who made me well said to me,
Starting point is 00:40:26 pick up your mat and walk. So they asked him, who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk? The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus has slipped away into the crowd that was there. In my Bible, y'all, I wrote this little side note here, and I said, Jesus comes before the law. He is more powerful than the law, and he heals, not the law. Like, he heals, not the law. So it's just like wild. Like, this is the part of the story of, like, you know, Jesus and the Jewish leaders.
Starting point is 00:40:59 they were so frustrated and like found so much offense in Jesus literally healing people on Sabbath because it went against the law like it went against religion and to them I feel like they would hide behind being like but this is the way that God wants it and Jesus is like okay I'm trying to tell you guys like I am God though so if I'm going to work a miracle on Sabbath it's all good because Jesus literally comes before law and he is more powerful than law. So if he's going to heal a man who was paralyzed on Sabbath, I think that's okay. Like, let him work miracles on any day. How about that? Later, Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, see, you are well again, stop sitting, or something worse may happen to you. The man went away and
Starting point is 00:41:46 told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well. So because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. In his defense, Jesus said to them, my father is always at work to this very day and I too am working. So that's like kind of what I just said, right? Is like, Jesus is like, no, we're going to keep making, like, we're going to keep working. I'm going to keep performing miracles no matter what the day is or time because my father is always at his work on this very day and I too am working, you know? For this reason, they tried all the more to kill him.
Starting point is 00:42:22 Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own father, making himself equal with God. Jesus gave them this answer. Very truly I tell you, the son can do nothing by himself. He can do only what he sees his father doing because whatever the father does, the son also does. For the father loves the son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these so that you will be amazed. For just as the father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. Moreover, the father judges no one but has entrusted all judgment to the son, that all may honor the son just as they honor the father.
Starting point is 00:43:10 Whoever does not honor the son does not honor the father who sent him. I wrote off on the side, I said rejecting Jesus is rejecting God. And that's like basically what Jesus was telling these Jewish leaders, is like as long as you reject me and you don't want to believe what I'm telling you that I am literally sent here by God, as long as you are rejecting me, you are rejecting God. Because me and God are one. He's like, me and God are one. We are the same. Very truly, I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged, but has crossed over from death to life.
Starting point is 00:43:46 Very truly, I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the death. dead will hear the voice of the son of God and those who hear will live. For as the father has life in himself, so he has granted the son also to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the son of man. This is God basically just explaining to everybody that Jesus and God are the same. Like Jesus was sent by God. God gave him all the same authority that God has.
Starting point is 00:44:19 so Jesus can do as God does. They're the same. Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out. Those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. By myself, I can do nothing. I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just. For I seek not to please myself, but him who has sent me.
Starting point is 00:44:49 me. All right, y'all, well, I guess that's where we can stop.
