It must seem like I drink a lot, but I really don't.
I come down here.
I don't drink during the day.
Okay?
I come down here.
It's my kids upstairs, wife upstairs.
And I swear to you, I swear to God right now, she's painting half the living room.
I can't keep on saying that, but that's all she does.
She paints.
Half-ass style.
Yeah, so.
So, I don't.
I'm just going to take it.
a sip. And yes, I like ice. I like ice in my drink. Why wouldn't you put ice in your drink?
My wine is warm. So you put ice in it, right? When you have a Coca-Cola, do you like to put
ice in your Coca-Cola? Right? I put ice in my beer, my wine. Apple juice. I put ice in my
apple juice. Why wouldn't you do that? This Tommy box here, it's called a Tommy box. Doesn't
stay open. Things are going great, eh?
I didn't like that light anyways.
I got to do a little tinkering, I think.
Why am I embarrassed?
I'm actually embarrassed right now.
I used to work with a guy his name was Dave,
and I'm not talking about Dave Pompeo.
Talking about...
Do you know how many Daves I worked with?
I worked with this guy named Dave.
He was a good guy.
I'm in Animo months ago.
Long time ago.
Well, not that long.
I'm at the dentist.
Dave and his wife.
for in the waiting room.
And it was good to see him.
I'm like, Dave, how's it going, man?
And he asked me what I'm doing now, and I said, I'm retired now.
He's like, really?
Really?
Really, you're retired?
Wow.
And I said, how about you?
He just goes, I'm still going at it.
I hate it when I make that sound.
So rude.
But he starts talking to me about police work.
And I hear his wife in the background.
I want him to retire too.
And Dave starts going off about some troubles and some things that he, some dislikes.
Something about a pursuit that his supervisor is on him about and after him because he didn't shut down lights and sirens quick enough or something.
Anyways, turns out he wasn't.
even pursuing. I told him that. I said, that's not a pursuit. But his supervisor
are not happy. You could see in his mind that he was done, that he was suffering. I could see it.
He was suffering in his head. He looked gray. He was like gray, a gray color like a, like a salmon.
And I didn't say the right things to him, and I wish I did. Doesn't even know I do this.
Maybe he's listening. I don't know. What I'm trying to say, but
you uh sometimes you just i looked at him and i thought to myself you're done you're done you're done
you're done sometimes we humans aren't meant to do the same thing your entire life sometimes you could
do a job for five years and you're like yeah isn't five years of doing the same job enough sometimes
for some people 10 years 20 years of doing the same job but then there's those people
people that will do it for 50 or 25 policing.
Because they love it. And that is awesome.
That is awesome.
I hate to bring up the same people I already brought up.
But Mike Succo and Brad Sautjok, they love the job.
Even though they might make as though sometimes they don't, deep down, they love it.
Dave Pompeo loves the job.
And he's going to be an awesome boss.
I know that perfect.
And that's great.
That's wonderful.
But then there's other people that, I don't regret being a police officer, of course not.
I did it for the majority of my life, my working life.
But some people, they're a fit.
They're a complete fit for the outfit.
But sometimes, sometimes 15, 20 years is too long.
25 years is too long.
And I can see it in his eyes.
and he says to me, and I'll never forget this,
because he's telling me that he's thinking about retirement.
And he says to me, he's upset that he chose this profession.
He's upset with himself.
He's looking at his life.
And he says, I wanted to be a helicopter pilot.
Yeah, well, I don't know if you guys can hear that,
but the wife has a friend over her,
they're actually painting together, half the living room, right?
I started seeking.
When I was still a policeman, I started, I started thinking about,
started thinking about doing something different.
Why not do something different?
Maybe it was time for me to do something different.
It's just so loud up there.
But it's good, right?
It's good they're hanging out, having fun.
This isn't an episode about,
get out of the police force,
because that's not what I'm saying.
I wouldn't even recommend that.
I wouldn't even recommend that.
all. If you're of mind, do it. Forever. Absolutely. Do it forever. I wish I could have. Kind of.
Past couple of years, I'd say the past three years, I started getting hooked on. This is,
this is embarrassing, guys. I started getting hooked on space. I know, planets and stars.
I don't know why, but I did. I started researching it. We have a bunch of
a bunch of planets in our solar system. I just hear me out here, okay, okay? Venus, Mars, Neptune,
Jupiter, Uranus, shit like that, right? We're all going around a star. It's our sun. We're in the
Milky Way. Our galaxy is called the Milky Way. It is, it has over a hundred billion stars in the
Milky Way. Some say 200 billion. But let's go with 100 billion. It has 100 billion stars in the
Milky Way. Each star, the majority of each star, has multiple planets going around it, just like in
our solar system, just like our planets going around our sun. A hundred billion stars. How many planets?
There are billions upon billions upon billions of planets in our Milky Way alone. There are more stars in
our Milky Way, then there are grains of sand on our planet Earth. Now think about that for a second.
Are we alone? Of course we're not. Obviously not. You'd be insane to think that you're alone.
We're not alone. It's not just us. Now here's the big Whopper. Big Whopper. Did I just say that?
Here's the Big Wopper. There's two. That's our galaxy alone. There's 200 billion galaxies. Think
about that for a second. There's probably more. There's probably way more. Think about how much
life is out there. I was watching a documentary and they showed the planet Earth. Okay. This is
so ridiculous. But they show, I want to tell you something. They showed it, they showed the planet
earth and a rocket or a satellite going out and it's passing, it's passing all the stars. It's
passing planets and it shoots out. It takes a picture.
from part of the Milky Way.
And it shows a little speck a little tiny, tiny something, and it was Earth.
So I'm watching this.
And as I'm watching it, all I could think is, and then you see the earth way in the
background, the tiny, and all I could think is, I'm nothing.
What am I?
I'm nothing.
So what am I doing?
is this the life I want?
I want to be a caught my entire life.
It wouldn't have mattered if I worked for Canada Safeway, which I did want.
I would still feel the same way, I think.
No, I wouldn't.
But it made me realize there's way more to life than, uh, I don't know,
listening to some things that I didn't like.
Like asking a dispatcher, if I can go eat, can I go eat now?
Shit like that, you know.
having a supervisor all upset over your shit show night and your overdue diary dates
and having a report to crown counsel bounce back on you over and over and over again it would
have been different if it was a loving a loving atmosphere i think that would have made a difference
for me maybe you work somewhere and you have a loving atmosphere
And that's awesome.
That's great.
But I started thinking, I'm going to die in 20 years.
So what are you going to do, man?
Like, what are you going to do?
You just, why not step out and do something that you want or do nothing?
How about that?
How about that?
Like when Dave asked me at the dentist, what do you do?
I'm like, nothing.
I don't.
What do I do?
Like, well, I'm getting my teeth fixed.
Yesterday I went down to the store and bought some paint.
That was a day.
That's what I did.
But it got me thinking.
Then I started thinking, what do I want to do?
Maybe I'll get a food truck.
Ridiculous, but I don't have a boss, right?
I'm the boss.
I'm going to sling some tacos.
I'm going to make pot-puffy tacos.
The whole town's going to love them.
Then I thought I'm going to buy a beer and wine store.
Then I almost bought a marina.
All these things are part.
for anybody who feels like they need a change.
Maybe you're at home thinking,
you know, should I?
Should I pull the pin and try something different?
I don't know, maybe.
You're going to get a code of conduct if you drive your brother home again.
What fuck is that?
How many times are you going to threaten a code of conduct?
I don't want to be negative.
I want to show you something that I learned.
that I thought it was pretty cool when I was watching Joe Rogan the other day,
and I'm going to show it to you, and I want you to see it, and I'm going to pass it along.
Sometimes I come down here and I blabber, and I don't even know if I'm making sense, but hear me out.
If you can do police work for 50 years, that's awesome, that's great.
That's great. Some people love it, especially the inspectors, right?
You hit Inspector?
Why would you leave?
You're doing nothing.
You're walking around with a cup of coffee.
How's it going, Susie?
You're getting those statements done?
I mean, everything's fun, right?
How you doing?
How's everybody doing today?
You're leading the detachment.
It's great. It's fun. It feels good.
Who can I focus on today with what member did what?
It's enjoyable for you.
You don't even wear a gun.
Half of them.
You don't even have a radio.
You can actually walk properly.
Instead of, every day's a good day.
That's how my wife always says to me.
Every time we get into an argument, this is how she ends at.
She says, you know what?
I was having a good day.
And I was having a good day.
And that's making fun of her.
And I shouldn't do that.
Because maybe she was having a good day.
She says it, it gets me every time.
I don't know what I bring this up,
but she gets me every time every time she brings that, like, says that.
I was having a good day.
It kind of makes me feel like when I'm a cop and I come back to the detachment after taking 10 files.
And I got a watch commander that has something that I can sink my teeth into.
Hey, client, I got something you can sink your teeth into as a child abuse file.
You don't have to get to it right away, though.
And I'd be like, oh, man, and I was having a good day.
Why did I bring that up?
I have no idea.
But if you could do police work at 50,000.
years, awesome. But maybe you're that person sitting around house with the wife or alone,
whatever. Alone's good. And maybe you're just sitting there thinking, do, should I retire?
Should I quit? Should I get out? Hard to leave the 80 grant or 86 grant. It's hard to leave
that right. And scary. What are you going to go do?
Let me tell you something.
You could do a lot.
You could figure it out.
But it's hard if you're, I don't know, maybe nobody's in that position.
And I hope you're not.
I hope you're, honest to God, hope you're not.
But maybe you are.
Sometimes I do this stuff and I don't know what my point is.
I know what my point is in my head, but I don't say it properly.
You're making 86 grand.
You want to leave.
You're making 86 grand.
You don't know if you want to leave, but maybe you want to do something different.
shit
what is it
maybe you're on RFT and you're making 55 grand
could you imagine that
Jesus
poor bastards
how goofy is that
is it 55 grand or is it 50 I don't even know
55 grand sounds right
and then I've seen this on Joe Rogan
and I want to share it with
I want you
I'm just going to show it
I'm just going to show it
and I thought it was neat
I thought it was neat
I thought it was a neat oh
let me set it up first
It's they have a psychologist on Joe Rogan.
It's one of the best things I've ever heard on Joe Rogan because I thought of myself.
Bad.
The other thing is trauma, just those trauma in life screws people up.
We all know that, right?
Trauma screws people up.
We all know that.
But listen to this.
I didn't know this.
It just doesn't seem to be very specific.
So you get a lot of young childhood traumas.
That can lead to this.
narcissism it can lead to other things as well it doesn't seem to be specific but it makes your
personality a little more rigid and maybe you know maybe a little more fragile um so it's not a good
thing but it's not really specific and what kind of bad thing is trauma also creates personality
in some people listen to that hey trauma this ain't there's more to it trauma creates personality
All his friends that he hangs out with are comedians and they all have trauma in their life.
And that's what made them successful and happy.
Being in a broken family can actually, and being having trauma as a kid, a lot of them are
comedians.
A lot of them are successful.
And those are the people he likes hanging out with Joe Rogan likes hanging out with people
that are messed up in the head and have had messed up lives.
He can relate to it, and it's just I find it interesting.
That trauma can go either way.
Most of the time, that guy that I seen at the dentist,
we went to a call one day and dunk it.
It was a noise complaint.
We show up the guy's house.
The father is holding a two-year-old kid.
He's a boy.
And to this day, I think about this boy and how screwed up his life.
But maybe he's a star.
You're either going to be really screwed up or you're going to be a star in life.
But this asshole, we were just telling him to turn down the music.
Something silly, right?
And he was so mad at the sight of police that he was shaken.
And he was saying really awful things to us.
And we're like, why are you doing that, man?
You're holding on to your son.
Why are you doing that and showing him what you're showing them?
Why you, it's make, it's, you're a scum bucket.
He gets, this guy is so angry over nothing, and I'll never forget it.
He sticks his finger up his nose and does a violent nose back.
And he's shaking.
He starts bleeding.
There's blood pouring out of his nostril.
I'll never forget that call.
And I'll never forget, like, what's that kid doing now?
What kind of chance does that kid have?
But what I learned off this episode was trauma sometimes can be a good thing.
Watch this.
Like some people, trauma shapes their personality, their recovery from trauma builds character.
And some of the most interesting people that I know had traumatic upbringings.
Yeah.
And there's this really interesting idea they talk about is post-traumatic growth.
Post-traumatic growth.
Have you ever heard of that?
I bet you haven't.
Well, maybe you have.
But I hadn't.
Post-traumatic growth.
I didn't know that was a thing.
Nobody ever told me this.
Is that not interesting?
What's post-traumatic growth?
What's weird about life is we can have like, when trauma happens,
it can lead to really negative things and really positive things, both simultaneously.
I never, ever thought in my head that trauma can be positive.
Negative and positive at the same time.
I thought it was just negative.
And some of those negative things would be.
you know PTSD or stressors or you know anxiety or whatever difficult relaxing kind of
being wound up all the time but the positive things are the trauma can give you a
motivation to grow and go seek new things seek new things hey did you know that did you
know that trauma you can it could seek new things like goofy shit like was it the outer space
documentaries that made me
do this goofy thing?
Get this table and this microphone and this camera?
Or was it trauma?
I don't know.
Interesting.
Maybe I'm the only one who thinks that, though.
Speak new things.
And kind of the classic book on this was
Somerset Moms, the Razors Edge.
Bill Murray made a movie of this.
It was a while ago.
But it's about a guy in World War I who was
traumatized in the war and then went out
ended up going to India and sort of seeking, seeking some religion.
But people who are traumatized, you're suffering and you need to seek a way out.
And sometimes that path to growth can lead you to a better place than you would have been
if you'd never suffered in the first place.
Right.
And that's what's powerful about trauma.
It's what's powerful about suffering.
What the fuck?
Did you hear that?
Is that?
I thought of myself.
That is amazing.
That trauma.
trauma can make you go down a path that makes you do something else.
I wrote it down, but it can make you go down a path that'll make you do something else.
And if you were never traumatized, you would have never done something else that you could have been better at, a better person, a greater person, more successful.
I wrote it down.
It can lead to a better place than you would have been.
if you never suffered in the first place.
Think about it.
That's, I love that.
I love that.
So if you're at home thinking, if you're at home seeking, they use the word seeking, something else to do, maybe, maybe you're traumatized.
But you can use that trauma.
Trauma can be a good thing.
It can be a good thing.
I never knew that.
Did you know that?
I didn't know that.
We all know it's a bad thing, but it can also be a good thing.
It can make you get off your ass and actually find a different path.
Something that you would have never done before because of the trauma?
I got this goofy fucking cop, this podcast here.
I wouldn't have done that if I didn't see trauma or experience trauma.
And I like it.
I like sitting down here and talking to myself.
And I feel bad.
I should have said to Dave.
I should have said,
man.
What do you mean you wanted to be a helicopter pilot? You can be a helicopter pilot.
Retire. Be a helicopter pilot. That's what I should have said to the guy. You know what I mean? That's what I should have said. I just wanted to share that with you. I thought, you know, I was like, bam, wow, trauma can be a good thing. That's pretty cool. Whoever thought of it that way. Maybe I'm doing this because of the trial.
I always thought it was because I seen the universe.
I seen the planet Earth from a billion miles away and realized that I was nothing and what am I doing in life?
Is that what you want to do?
You're going to die in 20 years?
What, like, I don't even know.
I don't even know what I'm thinking or saying.
I don't know.
I just, I guess I'm done talking.
I'm always worried about shutting this shit off and not saying everything that I wanted to say.
and I'm going to review this for like three days and see if I actually made sense.
The wife doesn't watch this stuff, so I can't show her, so I got nobody to like,
there was one video I sent to my parents.
And I said, what do you guys think?
Do you think I should post it?
And they said, yeah, and I'm like, damn it.
I wish I didn't.
But I did.
I know.
I got nobody to review that stuff.
I don't know, guys.
If you're at home thinking, maybe I should pull the plug.
maybe you should come and be my co-host I don't know let's talk cop shit do anything you can do anything
and for those cops that love it I'm jealous and I hope you never quit if you love it don't ever
quit just keep on doing it yeah okay I think I'm done subscribe
