Starting point is 00:00:04 Clinton Jaws, like and subscribe and yeah, just do that. And I actually mean that. I mean that. I mean those words. I got to ask the question, I don't care how long this is going to take me. I don't care how long it's going to take me. Usually I sit down, I feel like I got to do things fast. I got to talk fast.
Starting point is 00:00:24 I got to be speedy. But I had a fella message me. He messaged me. He somehow found my email, the right email. And he messaged me a nice message. He wanted me to email him about. But I thought, you know what? I thought I'd just talk about it on here.
Starting point is 00:00:41 He just finished Depot. Okay? And he's asking me, what should I expect, Clint? Can you tell me basically what's the first day going to be like? I know how he feels. Because our first day, the first day we got our badge, we went back to the quality in. I had the entire troop inside in my room. The entire troop wasn't, I had the suite at the Quality Inn.
Starting point is 00:01:06 I remember clearly sitting there saying hey guys what'd we learn would we learn at depot like really we didn't learn how to do the job I got a badge but
Starting point is 00:01:21 I don't know how to become a cop turns out I was right we didn't have a clue we knew about powers of arrest and had a handcuff you know nothing so it's pretty good question because you're going in there dumb okay the email
Starting point is 00:01:36 I'm going to read it to you. I'm only a couple of sentences, and don't worry to the author. I'm not going to say who you are. You said you don't want me to say it, and I won't. That's fine. By the way, guys, call the hotline number 604-3302512. Ask me a question. Let's talk about anything.
Starting point is 00:01:52 Okay, this is what he says. I've graduated. And he's going to, I don't want to read his words. He's going to a small place, okay? With not a whole lot of members there. He's looking for some tips or words of advice for a graduating new member. I noticed a lot of depot video tips, but how about some post-depo tips? And yeah, he's going to a small place.
Starting point is 00:02:18 You're going to hate your first year and a half. It's not much of a tip. You're going to be overworked. You're going to get home late, probably. I don't know. I don't know what kind of place that place is. Maybe it's not busy. I hated my first year and a half.
Starting point is 00:02:35 hated it. Couldn't stand. I was overworked. Maybe you won't be. Maybe, you know, everybody's situation is different. Man, I was carrying over 30 files for three years. My first year, first year and a half was gross. I'm like, what is this?
Starting point is 00:02:55 I don't want to do this. And you look at other members and you're like, how do they know all that? How can they be so smart? There's no way one day in two years I'm going to be, that smart ends up for most. That's exactly what happens. You're starting this job.
Starting point is 00:03:18 You don't have a clue. He wants me to talk about the first day that I arrived at the detachment. Do you introduce yourself? Don't worry about that. Demeanor with your coach officer, first call things not to do while on shift. I used to smoke. I remember my first day. I was...
Starting point is 00:03:38 Maybe I shouldn't say it. I'll say it later. Okay, dumb story. What not to do. Quit smoking. If you're a smoker, quit smoking, okay? I know you're not a smoker. Who smokes now? Nobody smokes now. But if you do, when... My first day, I had to have cigarettes. I was so nervous. And I wasn't driving the car. I could never get away from my trainer. She was all... She drove the car all day long. We're on the road all day long.
Starting point is 00:04:06 And I... Probably about three times I made her pull up to the gas. station I told her I had to go to the washroom, but I'd go on the washroom and I'd just destroy a cigarette and less than 20 seconds. And I knew. Like, I look back now and then I hop back in the passenger seat. I reek. Of course she knew. One time she used the washroom after me. And I was like, oh no. Yeah, anyways, dumb story. Don't do that. I get the feeling it's a lot less proper and more casual on the job. I didn't understand your sentence there. but it's way casual compared to depot. Depot's history, guys. Once you leave Depot,
Starting point is 00:04:46 you never look at a corporal like how you do when you're at Depot. Totally changes. Corporals are no longer gods, which really is too bad. No, you shouldn't stress about grading whatsoever. If they let you your first day, you should jump right in. I wish I would have jumped right in.
Starting point is 00:05:03 I wish I would have, when I went to the briefing room and did a morning briefing, and I had my radio, and in Duncan they'd go, I need a Duncan member for mischief. I wish I would have known to have this sense. I think it would have been gangster, kind of cool, if I just grabbed that radio and said Bravo 1 right away. Bravo 1, we'll take it.
Starting point is 00:05:21 The trainer would have been, actually, maybe the trainer would be annoyed, thinking the trainer's going to have an easy day because they got a cadet. But that's, I wish if I was to do it over, that's what I would do. And I tell my trainer, can I drive? I would jump in more than I did. But how would you, nobody would know that. Nobody knows unless you were in auxiliary. So one thing you do know, better than anybody there, you know how to arrest somebody, better than any other cop there.
Starting point is 00:05:46 Don't hesitate to arrest somebody. Jump right in and want to make your first arrest and get it over and done with. All these things will impress a trainer. I might have told this story already before, but I guess I'll tell it again. It was about three weeks in. I was only three weeks in. I don't even think I drove yet. and my trainer was sick.
Starting point is 00:06:08 And my watch, there was about four of them than me. I don't know. They were probably looking at me like, I was useless. I was useless. And I thought when I started, because I hadn't been on my own. And I remember Minot, good looking girl, lady. She said that I could take my own car tonight. Like, oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:06:30 But I didn't know that she meant I take files. It didn't even enter my head. There's no way. Because maybe part of me was just used to watching a lot, being a statue. And don't do that. Don't just watch. Don't be a watcher. Because then you're going to find yourself, your trainer's going to be getting their ass kicked on the ground. And this has happened.
Starting point is 00:06:52 And there you are just standing there watching. You know, you jump in. That's what I mean. It's so important to jump in, even on your first day. But I remember that night. And everybody's at the computer and their, typing up their files and I'm just kind of looking around, you know, wanting to talk to somebody. There's files coming in and they're leaving the office and da, da, da, they're going to get their file.
Starting point is 00:07:16 I'm not doing nothing. I'm not working. And then Minot says to me, and she goes, you know, you, you can take some files. I'm like, oh, okay. I got up and I walked out of the GD pit and I went into the car and I went, oh my God. Because the guy next to Minot, Darren Leggin, he went, like, he couldn't believe that she said it. And I caught that. And I'm like, I've been a useless tit to them this entire time. They want me to take, I'm not helping out. I once told somebody, I don't know if it was good advice or not.
Starting point is 00:08:00 But I said, you know what, it doesn't matter how good you are. It only matters how many files you take. Go out there and take files. that's what they wanted me to do. I probably shouldn't have said that quote. Sometimes you have a dog fucker, right? Somebody on your watch that shits the bed and only takes erratic drivers. If, you know, hopefully this person's going to take a file.
Starting point is 00:08:25 Oh, you're on strike tonight? We used to say to them, are you on strike tonight? And that's probably where I got the, they don't care how good you are. They only care about how many files you take. And part of that is kind of true because if you take a lot of files, every other cop is going to say that's a good cop you might be shit you might not be able to write up a file but all anybody wants you to do is help help them out don't just sit in the office don't go 10 6 getting gas when I went to Langley I look
Starting point is 00:09:04 and there's people they were making themselves 10 6 or they're getting gas don't avoid the radio now where was I where was I I don't know, man. They show up to your first day with a fake smile if you don't smile much and pretend to be enthusiastic and motivated. I don't know what your first day is going to be like. It could be totally different. I swear to God, I hate it when...
Starting point is 00:09:33 I was never a trainer, but when the cops were trainers and their training recruits, I used to hate it when they'd be like, just so you guys know this block. You know, I got a new guy. I got a cadet. I'm training. them so we're going to need a lot of time in the office we're not we're not probably not going to be taking any calls and if we do it's only going to be you know the little little stuff why is
Starting point is 00:09:57 that why is that we'll take the erratic drivers okay and the noise complaints but we're going to be useless to everybody i was lucky when i showed up an hour later was on the road we stayed on the road all day long i wasn't in the office you know calling the help desk and that's something that might happen on your first day? They might say, well, was it going to be an office day for you? You get to know everybody in all the sections. You get to see who the exhibit custodian is. Yeah, she sends out shit emails twice a week. That's all you need to know. Get to meet the court liaison officer. That's a big deal. Or how about the reader? He sends out an email every day. Nothing like meeting the reader. And if you do that, you're
Starting point is 00:10:58 first day it's a waste of time to me i think it is sit at your desk for two hours trying to get group wise going goofy no token is a token working he needs a token well you didn't get a token all that stuff should be set up before you even arrive but it isn't and gives a cop who's training you a well a free day he needs to set up his passwords can't do anything about it we can't take calls that's exactly what your first day might be like. Hopefully it isn't. Just have the mentality of, I'll do it. Want me to drive? I'll do it. Can I write the ticket? If you write tickets or really blow their minds. Can we take some calls? Can we take that call? When we get there, can I arrest them? Oh my God. That would blow their mind. And this isn't going to be popular. If you're a girl, okay, you can say no to side hair. You don't have to have
Starting point is 00:12:00 side hair. Just because they have side hair doesn't mean you have to also. You can choose bangs. And I'm not talking about these bangs. The ones worked with a girl, a good looking girl. And she had a mustache for two blocks straight. Not purposely. Anyway, I've said too much. I don't even know what I said. And maybe I'll start doing more of these. What was your question again? Talk about after depot. Yeah, maybe I'll do more of these. Thanks for emailing me. Give me a call, 604-33025.12. Thanks guys. Bye-bye. You don't have to rip your hair back towards the back of your neck.
Starting point is 00:12:36 I don't know. I'm just saying when you become a cop you're allowed to do yourself up. Okay, you're allowed to look pretty. And I don't know why I'm talking about hair. Because look at this thing, right? But that's just today. I can't use this. I'll lose some subscribers over.
