I hated college. I wanted to go to the league. My hope of mine said every day we try to get to the league. I just was crazy enough to think I was going to go right away, you know what I'm saying? I didn't even start my freshman year. Like, I came up the bench to, like, the, one. Once we went to the tournament, I started playing more and more. And then my sophomore year, we had a real good team.

We was number one in the country that year. So that's when the scouts started coming to practice and shit. I'm like, okay, I'm lit. But I had a good miss shit. My setup was Sweden College, though. I went trying to leave too fast. Yeah. I was trying to get drafted.

That was my main thing. Like, I thought I could work up the draft boards, but that shit don't work like that. No, like you said, I had a whip. Well, Klanz was there. Yeah, Ron Baker. Yeah. Ron Baker. Y'all had a whip.

I had pros on that team. Yeah, we got a good-ass team, bro. But I think I had a good coach, too, and I was just, because, like, we got a lot of young guys on our team now. Like, a lot of the kids that come to the NBA now, they don't know how to play. Damn. So, like, I was just happy that I had a good coach who taught me how to play.

So by the time I got to the league, I kind of, you know what I'm saying? Transition was easy. Yeah, I had a good foundation to go off. That helped me a lot. Yeah. You always talk about that even as a high school coach. He was like, I'm having to teach stuff that we should learn. in the elementary school now that kids,

they're not kids, but shit, they get into the NBA and having to learn how to pick and rob and shit. They learn their game backwards now. Shit, you do all the difficult shit first. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? And by the time you get, you know,

it's like a certain age. Like, if you can't shoot by the time you're 18, you probably cook. You know what? You know what? That's how it is. Unless you can't. Six eight ain't just so gifted

that you can't deny it. Damn. As a door, if you can't shoot right now, you kind of cook. And it's NBA. It's hard. It's hard to add it. Our nakes better get a job, boy.

You can't shoot by 18 and you got to be 6-8? I'm saying, because you got to have something got to jump off the screen. I used to scout. We used to say, what's his superpower? Yeah. So it's shooting the most important thing to get somebody into the NBA right now? Yeah, I think so. What they're paying for is? That's what everybody got to survive. But, I mean, shooting is the separator to me. Like, if you could shoot, the more better you can shoot, the better your chance is going to be. Because that's what they're paying for right now. Slacing and shooting, you know what I'm saying? And so if you don't have that, you just have more of a disadvantage.

So your other shit got to be off the rule. You never got to be a superior athlete, much better. Yeah. You got to have a competitive nature, too. Like, that's the one thing I always appreciate about your game. Like, even being a smaller guard, like, I wasn't a defender at all. But you was actually known for your defense. Right.

So when you came in the league, I was like, this motherfucker really be guard. I was, like, laughing at him like, ah, this thing is trying hard as fuck. You know, that I'm like, hold on, my fuck is just fucking with that. And then he started scoring. He always been a good shooter, but then he started adding more and more to his game, but he was known for defense. Like, when I watched you in the finals guard stuff,

That was like the two things that I changed. try to do. And then the offense came later. I was just about to ask you that. Like, we can transition from college to going to the NBA. What was that like, bro? Man, it was cool. It was hard because I was trying to make it. Like, I was trying to find some security, you know, from being undrafted. Yeah. Not having a guaranteed contract. I was just trying to get, like, some security, like, a year or two.

Then I could work on my game. So that first part was tough. And then once I realized, like, I wasn't playing, I was just enjoying it. You know what I'm saying? I'm in the league. I'm chilling. I'm eating skittles on the bench. Like, I'm just watching the show. You know, that's how I go. And then like when you don't have no chance of playing, you really just chilling, traveling, and you're outside. So I did that, but I worked on my game every day and I studied every day. You know what I'm saying? And I just stuck close to the vest that I had. And so that was like that first initial transition. And then Once I started playing, then I built it a little bit, you know, more from there.

But at first, I was just happy to be here. I'm still happy to be here, but I was just super happy to be in the league at that point. Yeah, yeah, obviously, a lot of respect how you got to the NBA in Cape Grine and, like, made your way in a situation very admirable. But it's funny now you went to the G League, made the most of it and got back in a league. Now you got people in the G League trying to go back to college. Like, that is phrasing. Like, yeah, I'm in the G League.

Fuck it. Let me go back to my school. Yeah. The Times is wicked, bro. So what's all thinking about that? because I don't know, I got a different couple opinions on that. I feel like...

I forgot the specific award. And they like, yeah, next year, DeMarre, he's going to be playing defense and he's going to take another step and we're going to come back. And then it was like a couple of days later, the trade came through. I'm like, damn, wow.

Crazy, isn't it crazy game, bro? Wow. So imagine, you know what I'm saying? Just knowing him and how he felt, he got his own, you know, story of how it went. But from my position, I was just like, damn. And then the flip side was, the first report was that Kauai didn't want to

come back. That made even worse. It was like we traded our men for somebody that don't even want to be here. This was the narrative at the time. But all that is shit. It worked out. Kauai is the O-G. It definitely did.

He's the OG to DPU. No, for sure. That's the reason why I made it up. And then at that point, I hadn't played against Kauai, I think, but one time, that was my first two years because he was hurt.
